n behalf of the Science Teachers Association of Texas (STAT) Executive Board and Staff, welcome to the 2022 Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching (CAST), presented by STAT. While CAST attendees represent the wide spectrum of the varied disciplines of science, it’s our passion for inspiring students to discover the world through science that unites us. STAT is a passionate community dedicated to science teaching and learning, and at no place is that more evident than at CAST— where we can connect, focus, and grow together.
2022–2023 President

The CAST22 planning team, led by Chair Kara Swindell, Lubbock ISD, has worked hard to design an amazing conference where you’ll learn new concepts and strategies that you can immediately bring back to your classroom. We are grateful to the many volunteer presenters who contributed their ideas and efforts to make CAST22 meaningful and memorable. We’re also excited about our keynote speaker, Dr. Temple Grandin, professor of animal sciences and autism advocate, as well as innovative and inspiring programming, including tracks focused on teaching students with exceptionalities and implementing the revised Science TEKS, an exciting film screening event, and more. This conference guide is designed to provide a framework for all the varied CAST programming. For an in-depth look at sessions and the most up-to-date information, we encourage you to rely on the STATCAST mobile app, where you’ll find detailed, timely information about the workshops, extended sessions, and other important happenings. The app will help you navigate the conference and allow you to personalize your experience! As we look together to the immediate and long-term future, there are so many bright days ahead. Whether it’s reuniting the Texas science education community in Dallas this week or providing resources to guide your implementation of the revised Science TEKS, STAT is your go-to resource for all things science. STAT leadership is implementing strategic priorities to meet current and future challenges and opportunities related to CAST, the TEKS implementation, diversity and equity, and other programs and activities that will be valuable to you. You are STAT. Your voice matters and we value your input. Thank you for your contributions to build our science community and for choosing STAT as your partner in your journey as a science educator.

We hope you’ll take the next few days to connect with one another and new ideas, focus on valuable learning and incredible experiences, and grow as science educators and as a community.
Are you ready for the new Texas science standards (TEKS)? We are.
We’ve done the legwork. We built Carolina Kits 3D® labs from the ground up to support NGSS and TEKS instruction, so you can manage three-dimensional learning in your high school classroom with confidence.

STAT Face of the Future Celebration Presented by STEMscopes
Thursday Highlights KEYNOTE SESSION Dr. Temple Grandin | Professor of Animal Sciences
Science Needs Collaboration Between Different Kinds of Minds 9:30 a.m.–10:45 a.m. | Chantilly Ballroom Some people are visual thinkers who think in pictures. Others think in mathematical patterns or words. Dr. Grandin, professor of animal science at Colorado State University, will discuss how visual thinking assisted her research with animals and developing hypothesis for experiments. Today, the emphasis in STEM is lots of math. Math is very important in science, but science needs visual thinkers like her who are poor at abstract math. There are problems with replication in biomedical science because methods are not completely described. Mathematical thinkers use calculations to solve problems. Visual thinkers can visualize small differences in the methods used to do an experiment that can sometimes change results. Science needs both visual and mathematical thinkers.
