Hammered bevels to create irregular edges, intense brushing to add an age-old effect and traces of saw and scuff marks; all give Les Iconics a unique charm and a feel of true history. Les Iconics lets you pick from Aged or Rustic finish in a range of tones, as well as Herringbone and Chevron laying patterns in a natural oiled oak: there are plenty of options for a beautiful parquet floor that tells a personal story.
“ The popularity of traditional parquet is undeniable, but it’s hard to find a new floor that feels that it has history and life – particularly from an off-the-shelf collection.” Julia Egeler, product manager parquet, says: “The popularity of traditional parquet is undeniable, but it’s hard to find a new floor that feels that it has history and life – particularly from an off-the-shelf collection. For Les Iconics, we’ve taken traditional hand-applied aging techniques and translated them into modern machine production. The result is a parquet floor that has all the character and charm of aged oak, and which can be produced on a large scale. With Les Iconics, this popular look is available to a bigger audience.”

Aged surface floors give the appearance of an old wood plank floor that’s been renovated by hand. Showcasing depth and warmth, the surface features slight traces of sawing and is hand-scraped for a crafted feel. Rustic’s deep brushed finish creates the distinct character of an old parquet floor. Alternative appeal Vibrant retail commitment page 62-63
Flecks appeal Since its launch, thanks to its ultra-soft fibres, the Love Story Collection has become exceptionally popular, so expanding this successful range would always be a tall order. The response from Abingdon Flooring was to cleverly adapt the ethos of comfort combined with ground-breaking irregular flecked detail, replicating the design of a traditional carpet. Wild Silk is a cut pile saxony carpet that’s created using 100% bleachcleanable polyester. While the manmade process ensures consistency, Abingdon Flooring adapted its manufacturing process to incorporate a unique fleck detail that doesn’t repeat. This perfectly recreates the natural variations found in Berber styles to provide a one-of-a-kind look. Each of the twelve colour options has been chosen to tie in with key colour trends, while the fleck detail is depicted in contrasting colour ways. This means homeowners can easily match Wild Silk to contemporary interior schemes, while benefitting from a carpet that helps to disguise spills and dirt. Its heavy-weight construction lends itself well to heavy domestic settings such as hallways and staircases. Charlotte Coop, head of marketing Abingdon Flooring, says: “We’re delighted to have been able to showcase the versatility and groundbreaking technology that we use to conceive, develop, and deliver market-leading solutions for modern homes. The Love Story collection has sealed its place in popularity, so the task of expanding this collection further was always going to provide a challenge. Wild Silk provides retailers with a collection that allows modern homeowners to select the luxurious comfort synonymous with The Love Story Collection while its flecked-design provides a practical solution for family living.”

FLOORINGNEWS Safer way to spray floorwise has announced the launch of its new F597 Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive. This new product eliminates dichloromethane from its formulation making it both safer to use and kinder to the environment. This means that floorwise F597 requires just one warning symbol on the can for flammability. Andrew Gill, group product manager, floorwise said: “Some years ago, we launched our F599 spray adhesive which has become a gold standard for the industry. Our objectives for developing F597 were to remove the health risk from dichloromethane and make it kinder to the environment without losing the fabled performance of F599. We’re really excited with the launch of F597 as it achieves all these objectives.” F597 removes the hazards associated with many spray adhesives of being potentially carcinogenic and harmful to the environment. The other significant benefit of F597 is that, unlike dichloromethane, the solvent used is lighter than air and so will disperse faster into the atmosphere, rather than remaining trapped at ground level. The layer of invisible, odourless gas left at ground level by dichloromethane has been proven to create a significant risk of asphyxiation for installers working on their knees in poorly ventilated spaces. Better still, these gains have not come at the expense of product performance as floorwise F597 still has the same high adhesive solids content of F599. The result is a spray adhesive with excellent bond strength and unrivalled coverage in every can delivering a strong, fast hold across a wide range of floor coverings and accessories. “We say that ‘Fantastic floors start with floorwise’. As such, we’re always looking for ways to improve on our existing products and the introduction of F597 with its dichloromethane-free formulation that poses no risks to health or the environment clearly demonstrates this commitment,” continues Andrew. “The introduction of floorwise F597 Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive represents a safer and healthier working future for installers without any compromises in usability or performance. We’re delighted to add it to our line-up of spray adhesives,” concludes Andrew Gill.

Getting into the spirit Products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd., including the company’s Styccobond F48 PLUS fibre-reinforced high temperature grade vinyl adhesive, have helped transform a disused agricultural building into a new state-of-the-art distillery and visitor centre at Treggudick Manor, Cornwall. In a selection of classic wood stone and tile effects giving a modern makeover with on-trend colours, Leoline’s Rapport cushion vinyl range Contractors from First For Floors, based in Saint Austell, installed a variety of floorcoverings, including vinyl sheet and tiles, wood and carpet tiles, throughout the 620m2 space at the English Spirit Distillery, which features a 2,500 litre copper still as a centerpiece. F. Ball’s Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane was applied to create a barrier to prevent excess subfloor moisture and following this, contractors primed the surface using F. Ball’s Stopgap P141 primer, which is designed especially for use over non-absorbent surfaces, including waterproof surface membranes.
“ Considering the scale of the project, everything was straightforward and went without any hitches. We’ve been fans of Styccobond F48 PLUS since it launch” Once dry, F. Ball’s Stopgap 300 HD levelling compound was applied in the kitchen that serves the café – the product’s heavy-duty properties will enable floors to withstand being subject to heavy wheeled equipment. Elsewhere, the company’s Stopgap 1200 Pro high performance levelling compound was used to create a perfectly smooth base for floorcoverings. F. Ball’s Styccobond F48 PLUS was chosen to install Altro Ensemble wood-effect Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVTs) in the restaurant and shop, each comprising an area of approximately 100m2. The temperature tolerant adhesive holds floorcoverings in place when subject to high temperatures, which are expected in the building as a result of its large glass front. In the kitchen, Altro Stronghold ‘Dolphin’ grey vinyl safety flooring was adhered with F. Ball’s Styccobond F73 PLUS one-part, moisture-curing heavy-duty adhesive. The adhesive, while being easier to apply and faster curing than traditional options, provides the high bond strength required to withstand high foot traffic and heavy loads and is resistant to surface water, which will result from wet cleaning techniques in the kitchen.

FLOORINGNEWS Cruising to perfection Delivering ‘the perfect flooring installation’ for luxury Crystal cruise ship, the Crystal Endeavour, has been achieved by flooring contractor Venue Marine, installation partners of specialist IMO products supplier Kerry Johns Marine, under the project management of global turnkey cruise ship interiors specialist, Merima. To guarantee the highest levels of aesthetics and durability, Venue Marine used Styccobond flooring adhesives and Stopgap 1200 Pro levelling compound from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. The project demanded the highest level of workmanship and materials to install luxurious carpeting throughout public areas of the ship, including the Palm Court and Crystal Cove entertainment areas, Waterside Restaurant and the Sea Casino. In addition luxury vinyl tiles (LVTs) were used to create high-end, hardwearing floor finishes in the ship’s gym, crew offices and ‘back of house’ areas. To install carpets, contractors opted for a dual bond system comprising F. Ball’s Styccobond F40 and F3 adhesives. This combination creates a permanent bond, using F3, between the carpet and luxury underlay and a peelable bond, with F40, between the underlay and the deck of the ship. As such, the carpet will remain firmly fixed in place and looking its best throughout its lifetime, while enabling quick and easy removal when it eventually needs replacing. Styccobond F1 rubber latex adhesive was used to seal carpet edges to reduce the risk of fraying and fibre loss, maximising the longevity of the installation. Luxury vinyl tiles were installed using F. Ball’s Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive adhesive, which provides instant grab to prevent tiles and
Copyright of Merima planks from sliding as adjacent tiles/planks are laid into the adhesive. The adhesive also delivers a strong bond, which increases over time as the floor is trafficked. To eradicate the risk of trowel serrations ‘shadowing’ through the vinyl, the adhesive can be flattened to a smooth finish using a paint roller (pre-coated with adhesive) after it has been trowel-applied to the subfloor. Prior to installing the LVT, Venue Marine used F. Ball Stopgap 1200 Pro levelling compound to create a perfectly smooth and level subfloor surface, free from indentations, ridges or undulations, ensuring the optimum finish was achieved. Stopgap 1200 Pro was also used in the Palm Court and Crystal Cove entertainment areas to build up the floor levels around the natural wood dance floors to ensure that the installed carpet finished flush with the dance floor sections. Conference focus on circularity Carpet Recycling UK’s conference will offer its members and wider network dissemination and networking opportunities for UK, EU and international decision makers from across the supply chain. Returning as keynote speaker and CRUK Awards presenter will be Bob Peoples, Executive Director of the US-based Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) and Edmund Vankann, Managing Director of the European Carpet and Rug Association, who will deliver updates on policy developments, technological advances, challenges and progress at a US and European level. Results will be shared from a 2020 comprehensive landfill diversion survey being done in conjunction with analysts Oakdene Hollins demonstrating the various outlets compared against the volume of textile flooring placed on the market that year. Oakdene Hollins will also present the two new research projects commissioned by CRUK on Circular Design and existing and future Recycling Technologies for textiles. Returning member Aquafil will outline their international and UK plans to capture and recycle carpet polymers for new textile flooring, and Tarkett will talk about their established UK ReStart programme for the take back of commercial flooring in the circular economy. The benefits of CRUK membership in winning new work will be covered by David Heafey of Saint Flooring. Adnan Zeb-Khan, CRUK Scheme Manager comments: “Our packed two-day conference programme highlights the sector’s clear change in attitudes and commitment towards sustainable solutions and progress towards creating more circular opportunities within the sector. This is reflected in a growth of enquiries from companies concerned about the impact of their business activities, waste being produced and the desire to reduce this for environmental and reduced disposal costs reasons.” CRUK’s core funders are Balsan, Betap, Brintons, Cormar, ege Carpets, Headlam Group, Milliken, Shaw and Tarkett, along with new members in 2022 – Gradus and Furlong Flooring. The core funders are showing leadership within the sector on developing for the circular economy, helping their customers with increased sustainable ranges and through CRUK to reduce their waste. Latest CRUK figures revealed that pre-Covid, the industry was diverting approximately 65% of textile flooring waste from landfill. Around 430,000 tonnes of carpet and textile flooring waste arises annually in the UK. T 0161 440 8325 www.carpetrecyclinguk.com

FLOORINGNEWS Lion roars ahead of plywood Lion Floor is the high-grade engineered and sustainable alternative to BS 8203 compliant plywood that’s just as easy to install. Made in Finland by Finnish Fibreboard using locally sourced and highly sustainable wood by-products and with a construction that eliminates the core gaps and overlaps of plywood, there’s no doubting that Lion Floor is a high-quality and reliable alternative to BS 8203 plywood, but it is also cost-effective and just as easy to install. Because Lion Floor is pre-conditioned and doesn’t need wetting before installation, it’s just as easy to install as plywood. In fact, as it can be cut cleanly and quickly with a knife or saw, it’s arguably even easier to achieve a highquality flooring installation with LION Floor at your side. Fixed with screws or ring shank nails and suitable for screeds and feather compounds, there’s no longer a reason to choose BS 8203 compliant plywood. Peter Jones, Finnish Fibreboard says, “We’ve made Lion Floor as the ultimate alternative to quality plywood and it really does deliver for installers looking to provide highquality, uncompromised and low risk flooring installations. More cost-effective and sustainable than BS compliant plywood and more reliable and sustainable than cheaper plywood that might not meet BS 8203 requirements, Lion Floor is just as easy to install, so there are very few reasons not to choose it. We’d invite any installer to give it a try and you won’t be disappointed.”

FLOORINGBUSINESSNEWS Retail sales recovery slows amid cost concerns
Demand strong, inflation managed - says Victoria
The steady growth in retail sales that marked the start of the year is slowing with increasing concerns about consumer confidence - but there are indicators that furnishing is still holding up under the pressure.
Europe’s largest carpet manufacturer, Victoria plc, is reporting robust demand across retail flooring and a resurgence in contract sectors which will lift its financial performance beyond market expectations.
The British Retail Consortium said total sales rose by 3.1% in March compared with the same month a year earlier, significantly down on the 6.7% increase in February and 12-month average growth rate of 10.3%.
The Kidderminster-based quoted company issued a full year trading update to shareholders today saying it expected sales to be in excess of £970 million for the year ended 2 April 2022, compared to £662.3m last year. EBITDA profits will be over £155 million (2021: £127.4m).
Helen Dickinson, the chief executive of the BRC, said the rise reflected the surge in prices rather than a rush by consumers back to the shops after the easing of pandemic restrictions. “The rising cost of living and the ongoing war in Ukraine has shaken consumer confidence, with expectations of people’s personal finances over the next 12 months reaching depths not seen since the 2008 financial crisis,” she said. “Ultimately, consumers face an enormous challenge this year, and this is likely to be reflected in retail spend in the future.” But the latest data from Barclaycard showed furniture stores continue to enjoy strong growth of nearly 20%, month-on-month, compared to the average rise in non-essential sales of 17.5%. José Carvalho, Head of Consumer Products at Barclaycard, said: “Many sectors saw strong growth in March compared to the same period in 2019. However, rising fuel prices and household bills are clearly starting to influence consumer behaviour.” But Barclaycard said that despite this challenging backdrop, UK consumers’ confidence in their own household finances remains steady at 62 per cent.
Likewise continues to build its base The fast-growing UK flooring distribution business Likewise has added another operation to its network with the £3m acquisition of Delta Carpets, based in Leeds. Delta is a distributor of carpets, residential vinyl, laminate, luxury vinyl tile and flooring accessories to independent flooring retailers in the North of England, Midlands and South Wales and In the financial year ended 31 December 2021, it turned over £6.5m and profit before tax of £400,000. Tony Brewer, chief executive of Birmingham-based Likewise, said: “The acquisition of Delta further develops the geographical presence and customer base of Likewise. The increased capacity created by the new Distribution Hub in Birmingham releases capacity in Leeds to enable the logistics capability to integrate Delta and provide an enhanced service to customers.”
“Heading into the new financial year, demand for the Group’s products remains robust across our markets, with consistent demand from consumers driving our retailer channels. Furthermore, the Group is also witnessing a strong resurgence in commercial demand (hospitality, offices, leisure, home construction),” the company said. “As with all industries, inflation is self-evidently an important feature of the current operating environment, but Victoria continues to have the ability to increase selling prices quickly (and is doing so) to mitigate the impact of inflationary pressures on profits. The Group remains competitively very well placed in its markets to defend its position or capitalise on opportunities where gaps appear,” it said. Victoria also commented that it had invested heavily in raw materials and continuity of operations last year to ensure production schedules and normal product availability were maintained, despite the global supply chain disruptions. “This established Victoria as a reliable partner to our customers, when many alternative suppliers had extended delivery periods (or even no delivery at all),” it said. Victoria has operations in carpet, vinyl and ceramic flooring in the UK, Spain, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Turkey, the United States and Australia and employs approximately 4,500 people across 30 sites.
Belgium stalls on carpet import growth Latest data for carpet imports shows a suprise fall in products coming into the country from Belgium, the UK’s largest trading partner for carpets. The value of Belgium imports fell by 0.7% for the latest period analysed in February - a marked contrast to the performance in January when the figures bounced up a full third on last year’s figures. Overall £75.6m of carpet came into the UK in February according to a report compiled by The Furnishing Report based on HMRC customs data, a rise of 17% compared to the growth of 31% for January.
The Likewise group, headed by Tony Brewer as chief executive, has acquired and grown several brands as it expands across the UK and includes businesses such as A&A, Factory Flooring, H&V, William Armes (Dandy), Bruce Starke and Lewis Abbott.
That growth was driven mainly by the Netherlands which enjoyed a 43% boost in their exports to Britain while Turkish imports were up 21% and India up 9%. Chinese imports fell 16.3 percent to £4.2 million, a trend that has been seen across the furnishing sector.
In January this year, Likewise completed the £30m purchase of Valley Wholesale Carpets – its biggest acquisition to date with its annual sales of around £50m – giving it a substantial presence in the South East and the Midlands.

Voice of the trade Martin West formerly of Balta and Kingsmead Martin has stepped down from his senior role at Balta Group after a 33-year career in flooring which has seen him develop initiatives and drive sales at major UK carpet companies. Not sure whether this is a sabbatical or early retirement, we asked Martin to look back (and forward) on the business.
Q What’s been the biggest change you have seen over your career? A I t has to be technology. When I started on the road, my pockets were full of change for the phone box. The only thing that interrupted your thoughts as you were driving was a good tune coming on the radio. Orders were placed by phone or fax and people accepted you would probably not get a message to return a call until you got home.
T oday we have real time delivery information, ordering stock that we know is there live over an app. We can send images anywhere in the world instantly, our cars will soon drive themselves and carpet tufting machines can be loaded by robots.
QW hat’s the best thing about the flooring trade? A I am sure the most popular answer to this question is always “The
People.” It is still, and has been for the length of my career, a friendly trade, an unpretentious one where the representatives of most companies supply chain and retail know one another and are happy to socialise together. This is what has always made Harrogate so successful as a trade show.
Q What’s the worst thing about the flooring trade? A I ts attitude towards sustainability. Despite the laudable efforts of
CRUK to divert waste carpet from landfill, the broadloom carpet manufacturers have no cohesive plan to deal with the disposal of their product at end of life. C arpets now represent the biggest contributor to landfill and yet still there is no identification on a product to say what it it made from. This will impact on new recycling technologies that are currently being developed. I f we actually had a trade association of manufacturers, at least there would be a body that could enter into worthwhile dialogue with the waste disposal industry. Somehow there needs to be some self regulation because if we rely on a government department to regulate, we may not like what we end up with.
QW hat is the product/decision you are most proud off and/or which has made the biggest difference?
A I found an old press clipping the other day, dating back to the
late 1990’s when I was Sales Director of a small independent manufacturer called Planet Carpets. It showed a much younger and leaner me at The BBC Good Homes Exhibition alongside Anna Ryder Richardson the interior designer. The products that we were promoting were different, brightly coloured and interesting to discuss W e won an innovation award from British Wool for one range, Tribal Dance, which made us very proud at the time. I loved that period before beige, and then grey became the turn to neutrals and the fun left carpet colouration. It was great to take the product to the consumers and get a reaction alongside the “influencers” of the day.
40
Q If you had to pick one thing, what do retailers need to do better? A R epeatedly through my career I have appealed to my retail partners
to embrace a “less is more” philosophy. Due to the free availability of sampling and oversupply in the marketplace retail outlets can at times become a bewildering maize of me too products with little differentiation. More space and a reasoned layout could considerably improve the customer experience in a large number of independent retailers.
Q What do manufacturers need to do better generally? A A manufacturer is looking to supply the right product, on time, to
the specified quality first time. I believe that the majority of those servicing the UK market, particularly those based in the UK get that right more often than not. he biggest challenge now, I believe, is understanding how to market T to the next generation. A generation who have grown up being “influenced” on social media and who are drawn to recognisable consumer brands. As an industry we are still behind the times with our consumer marketing and if you look at the flooring industry as a whole then it has to be said , hard flooring does it better than carpet.
Q How do you see 2022 playing out with all the current challenges? A I t’s looking like it could be a tough year ahead. Disposable income has been reduced by tax rises and inflation at a time where the nation has filled its boots for the past couple of years with home improvements. I think there will be uncompleted projects still to come through and benefit flooring as we are always the last job, but after that has worked its way through, I certainly see a fall in the volume end of the market. Those who have money will still have money but for the majority of average homeowners I fear the hatches are due to be battened down for a while.
QW hat advice would you give to a young person thinking of a career in flooring?
A R egardless of the industry, my advice to all young people setting out on a career is that “knowledge is power”. Learn as much as you can from the people around you.
Q What are you most looking forward to doing in the future? A I am currently taking a break, maybe it will stop being called a break
and be renamed retirement, the jury is still out! With time on my hands I have recognised what I think is a worthwhile cause and I am actively supporting an awareness campaign for the Furniture Makers Company. FMC is a Livery Company but it is also a charity and supports anyone who works or has worked in the furnishings industry, which very much includes carpet and flooring. As well as offering welfare support for people who may fall into hard times for whatever reason, The Company also offers a great opportunity to network with people who do the same job as you in allied trades.

Enter the industry Oscars now! “Despite all the challenges of the past two years - or maybe because of them – the flooring industry is in overdrive with new ideas and product launches to stay ahead in a highly competitive industry,” said Flooring Innovation Awards organiser Bridgette Kelly. The National Flooring Innovation Awards sets out to identify products and services that are genuinely new and exceptional in the sector. Award categories cover not only flooring products, but also recognise achievements in service, technology and marketing. Last year there were more than 100 submissions to the award scheme despite the challenges of Covid-19 and 34 shortlisted entries received the coveted Innovation Star. The judges then went on to select the Innovation Gold in each of 10 categories to receive the ultimate award.

There will also be a chance to look at the exquisite woolrich quality of the highly flexible Richelieu Family programme of broadloom carpets and stair runners and exploring the clever approach to POS that lets a lectern with a small footprint show off all 144 colour options. “While the flexibility of Richelieu is great for homeowners, displaying over 100 colours and so many options in width, design and texture is not without difficulty, so we’ve thought hard about how people engage with carpet when purchasing. It’s important that, in addition to visual impact, they use the sense of touch to explore Richelieu and we’ve created a display that achieves this.”

FLOORING FOCUS
Stylish stone favours the fashionistas While wood is the natural leader in the growing LVT sector, there’s a fashionable focus on LVT styles in stone right now as the more homeconscious consumers look for options to create individual room settings with distinctives styles in different areas of the home.
If you are looking to make a strong statement in style, the Invictus Maximus collection has plenty to offer and none more striking than the exceptional Victorian Treasure – a classy concept with a vintage cement aesthetic. Victorian Treasure is available in two colourways, smoke and charcoal, and to complete the luxury feel there are optional matching borders to finish off the floor perfectly.
And we say “areas” deliberately as home designers look to mix surfaces in open plan spaces to seek attention with the latest terrazzo designs, concretes and slates as well as chill-out limestones and marble. “We have seen a rise in demand for stylish stones of late and we expect this to continue with home decorators looking to luxury vinyl flooring for its elegant and intricate details, durability and ease of maintenance,”
“We have seen a rise in demand for stylish stones of late and we expect this to continue with home decorators looking to luxury vinyl flooring...” explains Stella Coyle, retail sales manager of Karndean Designflooring. She said: “Our new Knight Tile collection brings together the very best features of natural stone in a practical LVT with new concrete, slate and marble designs being introduced from May 2022.
Karndean Designflooring’s Olten Stone
“Although marble has been around for a while now, Calacatta and Carrara Marble are currently a dominant style in stone and interior finishes. With the natural veining you would expect from real marble, our Frosted and Glacial Marble offer a light look, whereas Midnight Marble offers a darker alternative for added drama,” she says. For a timeless and contemporary classic, Karndean’s new Basel, Olten and Lucerne Stone bring a subtle terrazzo feel within a concrete style. With concrete still being a popular choice in urban and industrial spaces, the new Dove Grey and Smoked Concrete offer a light and mid-grey option.
Karndean Designflooring’s Glacial Marble 66
These new designs allow home decorators to get the modern look of slate with minimal effort or upkeep required. Our Honed Charcoal introduces cooler charcoal tones for a softer look and Honed Pebble Slate offers a mid-grey with visible slate fractures.

The Maximus Dryback collection has a 0.55 wear layer with the Invictus ultra-strong Scatchmaster coating – a highly efficient top layer that offers out-performing wear protection that is perfect for a busy family home with kids and pets. “Enjoying something of a rebirth, terrazzo flooring is a big trend in commercial interiors and is being embraced everywhere from shops and restaurants to offices and hotels,” say the design team at BerryAlloc. “Like many commercial interior trends, terrazzo has been popularised by appearances at design shows like Milan Design Week and as the hottest trends from these events also find their way into homes, we’re expecting to see more consumers look towards the floor’s classic look that has a touch of Italian style.”
“Terrazzo flooring is a big trend in commercial interiors and is being embraced in everywhere...” THE STOCKLISTS May 2022
Original terrazzo is a costly option, and this puts its unique look out of reach for many consumers, so BerryAlloc has used its Pure Tiles collection to introduce a realistic terrazzo effect in three contemporary grey tones. By increasing the affordability of its vinyl planks, this is making the look of terrazzo flooring accessible, and homes can also enjoy BerryAlloc’s Terrazzo in Light Grey fantastic durability and easy maintenance. “With Pure Tile’s DreamClick locking system, 100% recyclable rigid composite board construction and a foamed top layer that reduces noise; we’re also making it easier to install and live with, so that more homes can enjoy this striking on-trend look,” says BerryAlloc. Polyflor’s impressive Camaro collection features four fashionable stone designs including comtemporary options in cement and terrazzo. The collection is a Stone Polymer Composite (SPC) product with a rigid core construction that offers excellent dimensional stability as well as helping to conceal subfloor imperfections with its built-in underlay. The press-fit 5GI click technology means quick adhesive free installation.
The Impression XXL Collection is the most lifelike collection in their vinyl portfolio, with a realistic surface texture enhanced by registered embossing: Rigid Click LVT tiles in an extra-large 457 x 914 mm format show off the timeless, modern elegance of natural granite and stone. The impressive large-format formats make smaller rooms feel larger and give any space a majestic, elegant look. Kährs recommend you book a visit to their London Clerkenwell Design Studio, where you can see samples of the Impression XXL collection and other wood and LVT collections. FLOORING FOCUS
Adhesives for LVTs by F. Ball & Co Ltd When installing Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVTs), it is useful to have the advantages of pressure sensitive adhesives, which afford high initial tack and a long open time. However, LVT installations sometimes demand other properties. Tim Green, head of training at the F. Ball Centre of Excellence, provides a guide to high-performance formulations with a range of additional features. A long-lasting, visually attractive flooring finish when installing vinyl tiles or planks involves following basic Pressure sensitive adhesives are ideal for the installation of LVTs because they form an instant grab upon contact, so, once positioned, tiles or planks won’t move about as contractors work. They also offer an extended open time, reducing the risk of late placement and making them ideal for installations where more complex designs or patterns are being created. Such products are typically allowed to dry to a permanent tack before placing floorcoverings and are designed to produce a high bond strength, which increases as the floor is trafficked. Hybrid solutions Advancements in hybrid polymer adhesives have also enabled the development of high performance vinyl adhesives with revolutionary combinations of properties, including temperature tolerance and pressure sensitive characteristics. For example, F. Ball’s Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS is a water-based, pressure sensitive vinyl adhesive that develops the extremely high bond strength and dimensional stability required to hold vinyl floorcoverings firmly in place in areas exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations (from -20°C to +60°C). Whilst providing high initial tack, the adhesive allows contractors to lift and reposition floorcoverings in the initial stages of drying, making it a great choice for installing tiles and planks, intricate patterns and bespoke designs that need precise alignment.
F. Ball’s Styccobond F48 PLUS provides high initial grab and limits the movement of floorcoverings when subject to high temperatures.
The pressure sensitive nature of Styccobond F49 and excellent resistance to plasticiser migration also make it suitable for installing vertical PVC flooring accessories, such as skirting, capping and coving. Unlike contact adhesives, the hybrid adhesive only needs to be applied to one surface, and the same properties that make it ideal for creating intricate designs allow for vertical flooring accessories to be repositioned during the early stages of drying. Styccobond F49 is also resistant to water, meaning it is suitable for use in areas subject to water and high humidity, including kitchens and bathrooms.
Temperature tolerant requirements There are instances where it will be more important to have the advantages of other solutions. For example, when installing floorcoverings in areas subject to extreme temperatures and temperature fluctuations, it is advisable to use a temperature tolerant adhesive. High temperatures or extreme temperature fluctuations can cause floorcoverings to expand and contract significantly, which may lead to unsightly tenting in floorcoverings and gapping at the edges of LVTs over time. This can be the case in conservatories or rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, which are subject to ‘solar gain’. Temperature tolerant adhesives develop the high bond strength required to hold floorcoverings securely in place in such environments, ensuring a long-lasting flooring finish. The formulation of F. Ball’s fibre-reinforced high temperature grade vinyl adhesive, Styccobond F48 PLUS, provides high initial grab to limit lateral movement of floorcoverings when placed into the adhesive, making it easier to work with. However, contractors requiring this type of adhesive have traditionally had to forgo pressure sensitive benefits. 68
Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS combines temperature tolerance and pressure sensitive and moisture resistant properties. THE STOCKLISTS May 2022
The fast-drying formulation of Styccobond F58 PLUS enables LVT tiles and planks to be secured from just five minutes. Fast-track formulations Another way that innovations in pressure sensitive adhesives are helping flooring contractors reach new levels of professional standards is by shortening the time it takes to install floorcoverings, allowing them to meet challenges surrounding pressures to complete projects to ever more exacting time constraints.
The sexiest underlay you will never see
F. Ball has recently launched a fast-track, pressure sensitive adhesive for LVTs, Styccobond F58 PLUS. Developed as a ‘transitional’ adhesive, Styccobond F58 PLUS transitions from a wet-lay adhesive when initially applied to a subfloor to become fully pressure sensitive. While not suitable for use in high temperature locations, the fastdrying formulation of Styccobond F58 PLUS enables LVT tiles and planks to be secured from just five minutes, while fibres in the adhesive provide resistance to lateral movement, preventing vinyl tiles and planks from moving around when working. As well as helping to reduce movement during installation, the adhesive’s high bond strength and strong initial tack prevents excess adhesive oozing between joints, facilitating easier application. When used as a pressure-sensitive adhesive, it has an extended open time of around three hours (depending on ambient conditions), allowing large areas of adhesive to be applied in one application without risking late placement of the floorcovering. Checking floorcovering compatibility As well as selecting adhesives suited to the requirements of a particular project, I would always advise checking the compatibility of particular floorcoverings and adhesives. For these purposes, F. Ball produces its industry-leading Recommended Adhesives Guide (RAG). It’s available on the F. Ball website and as a free app, as well as a printed booklet. Alternatively, F. Ball’s technical service department are on hand Monday to Friday, 8.30am – 5.00pm, to answer your questions about F. Ball products and how to use them via phone and email. Contractors can also consult floorcovering manufacturers for advice. I also host training courses on achieving optimum results when installing LVTs, which are free to attend, at the F. Ball Centre of Excellence. You can find details of upcoming courses and book a place for yourself or colleagues on the F. Ball website.

THE STOCKLISTS May 2022
Flooring factsheet Vinyl Flooring Vinyl is a fast growing sector of the flooring market due to its durability at relatively low cost and huge range of designs available. Sheet vinyl and cushion floor by the roll are popular but the sector is dominated by LVT. In reality, most of the products sold today are “LVP”, Luxury Vinyl Planks, as wood decors are more popular than ceramics and stone but the term LVT is still used to cover the whole non-sheet market.
Benefits
• Huge choice in terms of decors across wood, ceramic, stone and geometric designs
• I mpressive realism – not just in the design but infinishing
techniques that allow for wood knots you can feel, tiles you can grout, etc. See appearance options.
• Excellent performance in durability for high traffic areas, scratch resistance and cleanability. Vinyl also tends to be much more nonslip than natural materials. Some products are water resistant for bathrooms and kitchens.
www.bramptonchase.co.uk
Product options
• Dry back – a sheet or tile that needs to be fixed to the sub-floor using an adhesive.
• Self-adhesive – tiles with a peel-off backing paper to stick to the
sub-floor. Some tiles have adhesive overlaps to stick to each other rather than the sub-floor.
• Loose lay vinyl – tiles that simply drop onto the floor and rely on
www.invictus.co.uk
a high friction backing to keep them in place – they demand a very sound, level sub-floor but are the easiset type of tile to lay or replace.
Click – tiles that have a mechanical jointing system to attach to • Warm and soft to touch compared to ceramic and stone floors - and • one another (like a locked tongue and groove system) and ‘float’ on a good heat insulator anyhow, and suitable for use with underfloor heating systems.
• Sound reduction – vinyl has neglible impact sound compared
to the tap/click of laminate and transmits less sound and vibration compared to solid floor.
• Considerably cheaper than the ‘real’ thing – both to buy and to fit – and tile/plank approach minimises wastage.
Installation
Installation preparation Vinyl requires a dry, sound, level subfloor as the relative thinness of vinyl and its light reflection performance will quickly reveal imperfections after installation as well as cause potential wear issues. Exisitng wooden/MDF floors may need a plywood underlay up to 6mm thick and then the joints will need to be skimmed or taped. Non-wood sub-floors will need a self-levelling screed to be laid to ensure a suitable base for the floor. A damp-proof membrane may be required depending on sub-floor moisture levels. However, new rigid core products are less flexible and can be laid more easily over existing floors – see Construction.
Top Coating Wear Layer Decor Layer
the sub-floor without being glued down. There are many proprietary versions of the click system which offer fast, clean installation and stability.
www.karndean.com
Appearance options Vinyl tiles and planks cover a hugh variety of sizes and shapes and can be mix-and-matched to achieve an infinite number of designs. Current fashions include extra wide and long planks for wood through to very small planks for wood. Border effects can be easy to achieve in LVT. Other notable options include:
• Embossed – this is where the top clear layer of the tile has been
www.krausflooring.co.uk
embossed to create a realistic texture that matches the style of the stone of wood decor. Registered embossed is the most authentic – the texture matches the design so that, for example, a wood knot or hand-scraped element in the wood design can be felt on the surface of the flooring.
• Grouting and grooving – vinyl tiles can be laid with grouting inlay strips or beads of vinyl for addewd realism – and there are acrylic grouts that can be applied. In wood decors, planks are available with v-grooves or bevelled edges between planks for added realism.
www.myvictoria.co.uk
LVT construction
Top coating – A polyurethane or aluminium oxide coating provides protection against scratches and stains and gives enhances anti-slip. Wear layer – This is a key layer - determining the performance and resilience of the product. A 0.3mm (12 mil) wear layer is a good for heavy wear areas. Commercial installations need 0.5mm wear layers or above with 0.7mm at the top end. The wear warranties and guarantees carried by products will be based on this thickness. Decor layer – This is the decor itself - in essence it is a paper- or filmbased photographic inkjet print. (A few LVT floors have the image printed directly to the surface of the floor but this implies less image definition and different wear characteristics.)
PVC Middle Layer(s) Fibre Glass Layer(s) PVC Base Layer
THE STOCKLISTS May 2022
PVC and fibre glass layers – The construction ‘sandwich’ can vary between products but a combination of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) layers for strength and flexibility and fibre glass layers for structural stability may be used. Any click-system profile will be incorporated into these layers. Products often use a combination of recycled vinyl which is cheaper and virgin PVC which lasts longer and is more stable. Rigid core LVT has a solid, less flexible PVC layer with maximum stability which means it can be laid over exisiting, less even flooring without showing imperfections and therefore avoiding wear problems. Base (or backing) layer – The final high density PVC layer varies according to the installation requirement and is designed for taking adhesive or as an ‘underlay’ for loose-lay and click installations. 71

FLOORING FACTSHEET
ADHESIVES SELECTION CHECKLIST
The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide. Open Time:
Subfloor:
The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked.
What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard.
Odour:
While there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces.
Low odour, solvent-free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.
Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.
The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation.
Special Performance: Application Method: Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.
Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments.
Strength:
Air Quality and the Environment:
Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured.
The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.
Underfloor Heating: A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but this criteria must be checked where appropriate.
ADHESIVE TYPES Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticised PVC and most modern flooring. Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics. Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations. Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors. Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels. Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive. Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.
NO TIME TO WAIT? USE F58 PLUS.
FIBREREINFORCED, PRESSURE SENSITIVE ADHESIVE FOR THE INSTALLATION OF LVT STYCCOBOND F58 PLUS is a fast-drying, pressure sensitive adhesive that is ideally suited for the installation of LVT floorcoverings. Fibre-reinforced for quicker installation, -meaning you can get to work faster. Trust the yellow bucket.

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. Fading on Wool
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling
Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Colour matching
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.
A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.
It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Static
Sprouting
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
74
Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment. THE STOCKLISTS May 2022
• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling
Flattening
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
Shading
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
Pile Reversal
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Pulling Loops
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder. THE STOCKLISTS May 2022
Shedding
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Indentations
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Stocklists: Flooring Fact Sheet from Interfloor
Flooring factsheet Eco-friendly underlay Sustainable underlay
Interfloor ‘Says NO to Waste’
renu® is a game changer. Interfloor’s new underlay meets the concerns of our modern world in reducing waste and being environmentally sustainable.
renu® is a sustainable, recycled carpet underlay and is without question the most sustainable underlay in Interfloor’s long history.
It’s made by bringing together raw materials that we save from going to landfill with some that have a positive effect on the environment.
We have used post-consumer waste, car tyres and plastic bottles in the manufacture of our underlay for many years. But with renu® we have gone even further responding to the aspiration for a fully sustainable product. It’s made from 98% recycled materials, using ethically sourced and genuinely recycled materials, which means keeping waste from going to landfill and is 100% recyclable itself! The main body of the underlay is made of foam reclaimed from recycled soft furnishings, this foam is them mixed with a binding agent and subjected to high temperature steam under high pressure. The backing is made from 100% recycled and unbleached paper and we use vegetable-based inks for printing. The facing film is made from an ethically produced, carbonnegative bio-based film made from sugar cane. The sugar cane actively captures CO2 from the atmosphere whilst at the same time releasing oxygen – making this material not just green, but proactively green. Let’s not forget, the point of underlay is that it feels great and prolongs the life of a new carpet and renu®, being made from highdensity foam and with a thickness of 9mm, is suitable for all areas of the home.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.
www.interfloor.com
Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
PU (polyurethane) foam • This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.
Poor or old underlay will...
• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Crumb
Sponge rubber • A more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.
PU foam
www.unifloor.nl
Laminate underlay • There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination • A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.
www.underlay.com
Underfloor heating underlay • Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. www.wilsons-carpet-underlays.co.uk
Pre-tackified underlay • A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired. Underlayment for LVT • This provides a smooth surface on which you can glue down immediately. If there is a time or acoustic issue or a problematic underfloor, a stable, smooth dual underlay system will provide the best solution.

CLASSIC
Crumb rubber • Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).
Felt • This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets.
