Flooring Factsheet Adhesives
Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED
WOVEN
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.
Level loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality. Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms. CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas. Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.
Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms. CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home. Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.
Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the
BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

Regular Maintenance Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur. Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers! Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet. Use only WOOLSAFE approved products WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.
The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.
Periodic Cleaning When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company. If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE approved products. Look for the WOOLSAFE Mark on the bottle or package. It is best to engage the services of a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning company. To get a really expert job done entrust the work to a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. These companies are fully trained, have been in business for a considerable length of time, are members of one or more recognised professional trade associations related to the cleaning industry and have a reputation for top quality service. And they use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents on your wool carpets and rugs!
If you have a problem with a carpet or rug that requires an independent inspector, a network of carpet complaint investigators, trained and registered by The WOOLSAFE Organisation is available throughout the UK and Ireland. WOOLSAFE Registered Inspectors have extensive experience in investigating the causes for carpet complaints based on their practical involvement with carpets and rugs over many years. They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers, retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can carry out or commission tests where required, and will provide comprehensive reports. Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
www.smg-group.co.uk Contact: Mike Symonds Tel: 0118 932 3832 info@smg-group.co.uk
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,
any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see
The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 8
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents
• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.floorwise.co.uk
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!
Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.
A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
SAMPLES
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.
SHEDDING
The original carpet tile
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
PULLED LOOPS
This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
• shedding • pulled loops
SPROUTING
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
SHADING
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
STATIC
Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.
FADING ON WOOL
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair.
Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.
A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
an informed choice.

PILE REVERSAL (SEE SHADING)
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.
The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet.
The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
FLATTENING
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
SOILING
Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or
any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave
sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust
- which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet
SAFE
Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
DURABLE EASYCARE
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
Comfort
COMFORT
Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.
Safety
The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet.
100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.
britishwool.org.uk campaignforwool.org THE STOCKLISTS November 2013
Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 17

‘Where did that 6 months go?’ - Phil Hartley I have been with Edel Telenzo now for six interesting and very busy months. As the new C.E. I am working hard with the existing team to make a good business better. During the past months I have focussed on several key operational areas, together with range and customer development. The reputation for service here was one of the things that attracted me to the job, but we are not complacent. We aim to continue to improve in all aspects of sales order process, customer service and after care, ensuring that a quality product comes with quality service at all times. On the in-store presentation side, we are working hard on updating and increasing our POS-materials and improving our ‘messaging’. In the New Year you will start seeing our new guarantees and ‘messaging’ on the samples and POS which will serve to remind the retailer and inform the consumer about the quality and key attributes of Edel Telenzo carpets. Part of this campaign is enshrined within our new warranty badges, some of which are shown, providing the consumer with clear information in a simple but effective image format. Finally, we are working hard on our new ranges for 2014. Developments include new textures and stripes which we are eager to show you … at Domotex 2014! In the next issue of Stocklists we hope to give you a sneak preview of what you can expect at Domotex so don’t miss it.

Spot the difference!
NEW As you may have noticed, we have slightly adjusted our Edel Telenzo logo. The logo is now more concise and the different elements more united. The adjustment is part of a larger exercise to update and create a more contemporary and coherent corporate identity, entailing e.g. labelling, stationary, advertising and photography. In the coming months we will introduce the new, additional elements… to be continued!

FlooringNews TV’s Ab Fabula
The style led and distinctive designs of Vorwerk carpet have provided “the icing on the restructured cake” for an impressive renovation project to be aired on national television this autumn. The carpets will feature on the hit TV series Grand Designs presented by Kevin McCloud, with an appearance in the official accompanying series magazine early next year. Documenting the progress of some of the most ambitious self build and renovation projects throughout the UK, fans of Grand Designs will discover how Vorwerk played an important part in the interior design of a completely remodelled house in Herne Hill, South London. Searching for something a little different for her unique project, property owner Rachel Hammond chose Vorwerk for her master bedroom, children’s rooms and office space. She explains, “It was the quality, difference in style and variety of colours that attracted us to Vorwerk, and the tester books were brilliant. I was pleased to subsequently discover the benefits offered by the manmade carpet fibres predominantly used by Vorwerk, including being easy to maintain and keep clean.” The opulent two-tone hues and appealing tousled texture of the Fabula shag carpet were selected for the children’s bedrooms, in a rich plum hue to add an invigorating splash of colour and a neutral biscuit shade both giving a layer of interest and detail to the children’s bedroom. “We loved that there was no other carpet like Fabula in terms of colour and style,” continues Rachel. “Fabula brought a colourful and fun look to the kids’ bedrooms, giving us a great looking yet practical carpet, which is also forgiving as it does not readily show marks or dirt.” T 020 7096 5090

With a choice of three linear colourways to choose from, Penrose offers homeowners the flexibility to mix and match and create a truly individual and contemporary look. The densely plush and soft texture of Penrose is also inviting to the touch, thanks to the Satin Soft comfort yarn construction and 62oz pile weight providing premium underfoot comfort and a truly luxurious experience that lasts. Standing up to even intensive usage and footfall, the carpet is rated suitable for heavy domestic use and carries an impressive 15-year wear warranty. As a 5-star Crown Floors graded product, the lovely aesthetics of Penrose carpet are also matched by excellent all-round performance, with simple maintenance being all that is required to sustain its elegant appearance. Appy installations
Polyflor has launched its first App! The Polyflor app for the iPad is free and can be downloaded via the Polyflor website or directly from the Apple Store. Samples can be added to the ‘sample basket’ as the user browses through the content and at the end of the session, address details are entered and the samples are dispatched free of charge. There is also a ‘My Gallery’ section which allows the user to collect images whilst browsing through installation shots, these images can then be viewed and emailed in a pdf format. Tom Rollo, Polyflor’s Marketing Manager comments: “The App is a great tool for the flooring contractor and specifier alike, allowing instant access to product information, imagery and sample requests and is a useful addition to Polyflor's on-line presence.” T 0161 767 1111 www.polyflor.com
Rolling out the rolls
Cormar Carpets has invested over half a million pounds in 10 new DAF vehicles as part of its rolling annual fleet replacement programme and to meet the increase in demand leading up to the Christmas period. Six of the trucks are 15 tonne rigid vehicles and the other five are drawbar units operating at 30 tonnes gross weight with trailers. The rigid trucks, the drawbar prime movers and the trailers are all designed to carry the same six-metre long demountable box, which allows total ‘interchangeability’ between both types of truck and the trailers. All vehicles are fitted with automatic gearboxes and Telematics as the company continues to drive improvements on fuel efficiency. “Over the last 12 months we have seen a growth in demand for Cormar’s fast reliable delivery service”, says Logistics Manager, Craig Marshall. “Those vehicles being replaced will not leave until January which optimises our fleet size for the peak seasonal demand and ensures we maintain our high level of customer service – the two hour delivery window and next day collection points for all retailers both in the UK and Ireland. With over 130,000 carpet deliveries per year, Cormar Carpets runs a highly intensive nationwide delivery operation from its base in Bury, Lancashire. It has become an important part of its offering to independent retailers, differentiating it from many of its competitors. T 01204 881234

A credit to them, twice
One of the leading suppliers to the UK new build sector, Designer Contracts is celebrating after receiving two additional accreditations. The company has received a Constructionline and Exor accreditation, which demonstrates the company’s impeccable health and safety and reliability respectively. The Constructionline Accreditation is a UK Government certification service providing an up-to-date register of prequalified local and national suppliers to the construction industry and means that all of the company’s health and safety information can be viewed at one source, making it more convenient for the constructor. Exor accreditation demonstrates the company’s ability to meet the rigorous pre-qualification requirements within the private and public sectors, signifying strong financial stability, compliance with legal requirements and competency. Said Peter Kelsey, md at Designer Contracts: “The accreditations are highly useful tools, increasing efficiency and encouraging high standards throughout the industry. “We take health and safety extremely seriously and have an on-going IOSH training programme for senior staff to ensure health and safety is at the centre of everything that we do. “We are delighted that the company’s standards have been recognised and further enhanced with the two additional accreditations.” The awards are in addition to a number of other qualifications and accreditations that the business already boasts, including: a CSCS Platinum Award, which all fitters and visiting staff carry with them; Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS); National House Building Council Health and Safety Competence Assessment Scheme (NHBC). Impressing the brass
Stairrods UK, producers of industry leading stair rods and carpet accessories, are proud to announce the success of their latest solid brass Premier Trims. Shown at The Harrogate Flooring Show, the new trims have already garnered industry praise for their quality manufacturing and finish. A new estimator's box and in-store display accompanies the range showing all finishes and profiles. The Premier Trims are available to order now in eight different finishes, all of which compliment the existing range of Premier Stairrods. Four different profiles are available Double Z, Square, Single and Cover, as well as two different lengths 90cm and 270cm. Available in standard and specialised finishes; brass, antique, satin brass, chrome, brushed chrome, satin nickel and pewter, the Double Z bar is two products in one. It is a Double Z bar and a Z bar. To achieve this all you need to do is peel off one side with a pair of pliers. Therefore wholesalers only need to stock one profile instead of two. Director John Raine stated, "We are delighted with our new product”. “We have recently taken on additional staff to help accommodate the demand for the Premier Trims and we have invested in a 2.7m chroming tank enabling us to carry out our own chroming and another flat bed polisher to achieve quicker lead times and the best possible finish." The new Premier Trim boxes are hexagonally shaped with individual compartments allowing wholesalers to mix and match what trims they require in each box. The shape also gives the boxes added strength. Stairrods offer free carriage for all orders of three trims or more. The units are 2.30m x 0.75m x 0.50m.

The zero heroes
Carpet Recycling UK has added another accolade to its award-winning sustainable achievements by winning a Gold Zero Waste Award in the Partnership category of the Zero Waste Awards 2013.
It’s the second time this year that the industry scheme has gained recognition for its work in developing and progressing carpet reuse and recycling activities. In May 2013, CRUK won a Resource Revolution Award for its Landfill Diversion Strategy. Commenting on the Zero Waste Award, organised by Letsrecycle.com, CRUK Director Laurance Bird said: “We are thrilled to receive this award that honours the sustained efforts across the entire flooring supply chain in capturing and diverting increasing tonnages of waste carpet from landfill. “Innovation and input from manufacturers, flooring contractors, distributors and retailers continues to drive our success with landfill diversion rising from 2% to 21.4% in four years,” continued Laurance, who also paid tribute to the support of CRUK’s 13 core funders and their commitment to achieving zero production waste to landfill. “By working in partnership with the private, public and community sectors, CRUK is firmly committed to the principles of the Waste Hierarchy and embracing circular economy opportunities, which are transforming attitudes to unwanted carpet,” he added. As a Gold Zero Waste Award recipient, CRUK is automatically entered into the Zero Waste Platinum Award category for the 2014 Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management. CRUK impressed judges with its commitment to applying the waste hierarchy on a difficult waste stream. Carpet Recycling UK was formed in 2008 to tackle the 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arising annually in the UK. Its target is 25% landfill diversion by 2015. T 0161 440 8325 www.carpetrecyclinguk.com

Qualification innovation at F Ball
F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s state-of-the-art Training Centre has been named a designated assessment centre for the NVQ Diploma in Floorcovering Occupations. Registered NVQ assessor, Steve Gibson, Technical Demonstrator and Trainer at F. Ball, will lead the diploma course, which consists of a two-day theory and practical assessment, held at the company’s head quarters in Staffordshire. The NVQ Diploma in Floor Covering Occupations (Impervious) is available through the Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPA) programme, and is ideal for flooring contractors who have already built up extensive knowledge and practical experience from their time working within the profession. It offers a faster route to the NVQ qualification, as it takes into account the knowledge and experience that the contractor already has. Assessment for the NVQ Diploma is made up of a recorded professional discussion with an assessor, including a question and answer session, and a practical assessment consisting of a flooring installation set up within the training centre to assess the candidate’s level of skill and practical competency. Steve Gibson comments: “We are delighted that the F. Ball Training Centre is now a designated assessment centre for this NVQ Diploma, as it further strengthens the level of support and advice we can offer flooring contractors. “A lack of knowledge about flooring products and installation techniques can lead to floor failures and costly remedial work, which is why F. Ball believes it is essential that all flooring contractors receive the appropriate level of training and accreditation.” T 01538 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk

Out of the woods
‘Can do’ apprentice contractors
Kährs new Harmony Collection reflects the key trend for rustic natural surfaces with subtle design features. The cost effective range includes fourteen designs, each crafted in Sweden from sustainable European oak and ash. Hand-brushing removes pulpy softwood to expose natural graining and annual rings, which reinforce the natural look. Some designs are bevelled and smoked to add further distinction - and each floor benefits from a durable, easy-care matt lacquer or oil prefinish.
Career Academies UK is urging flooring contractors to take advantage of those bright A level students who lack the financial means, but not the aptitude, to go to university. Latest research has found that 38% of students are concerned that they may be unable to afford to pay the fees and 26% are deterred from going to university by the fear of a lack of jobs on graduation.
All floors have a three-strip design, which complements all interior styles. Pale toned colour options include Oak Frost and Oak Dew - which have a strong Scandinavian feel, on-trend grey toned Oak Limestone and the lightest floor, white Ash Alabaster, which also has a micro-bevel along all four sides. Mid-toned options include Oak Citrus, Granite, Stone and Ember, in shell pink, camel brown and golden tones. The darkest floors – Oak Smoke, Kernel, Bean, Soil, Moss and Lava – have a distinct rich tone, in earthy and nut brown shades, through to ebony. Each design from the Collection features Kährs ethical, high performance construction. Based on Kährs original design, patented in 1941, it uses sustainable hardwood down to the floor’s joint, with fast-growing spruce, pine and poplar below. This method, alongside Kährs Woodloc 5S joint, provides greater stability, promotes fast installation and eliminates gapping throughout the lifetime of the floor. All designs can be laid on most dry, level surfaces – and over underfloor heating systems. T 023 9245 3045 ww.kahrs.co.uk
The research among students expecting their A and AS Levels comes from Career Academies UK, a business-led charity that helps young people bridge the gap between school and work by giving them access to real experience of the working world. Similar research conducted in January by Career Academies UK showed only 13% thought university was worth £9,000 per year. Whatever path they plan to take, an overwhelming 83% of 17–19 year olds that have been through a work experience programme say they are optimistic about their futures, underlining the confidence they derive from active support, enhanced careers guidance and paid internships. Over 95% aspire to attend university, go into a full-time job or take up work-based learning such as apprenticeships. Says David Walker, policy director at Career Academies UK: "Flooring specialists have a real opportunity here. Instead of seeing a 19 year old job applicant as unwilling or unqualified to go to university, flooring contractors looking to recruit should see them as enthusiastic, ‘can do’ prospects, blessed with aptitude, enthusiasm and the ‘can do’ attitude that helps build businesses”. The Cooper School in Bicester, Oxfordshire has won Heckmondwike FB’s popular ‘Carpet for Schools’ competition. The competition received an overwhelming response this year, with over 350 entries, with the Cooper School selected at random to win Heckmondwike FB’s Supacord carpet, plus fitting, to a value of £1,000. Mr Ben Baxter, Headteacher at The Cooper School, said: “It was a great surprise to win the competition and fantastic to have Heckmondwike FB supporting us in upgrading our school, especially when budgets are tight. We have used Supacord before in our classrooms and it stands up to the rigors of school life really well,” The Cooper School, which is a comprehensive with over 1,300 pupils, has chosen to upgrade the foyer/entrance lobby to its Sports and Performance Halls. The School chose Pebble from the Supacord range for the outside edges of the area, which was inset with purple panels, to reflect the school and post-16 centre’s corporate colours. Heckmondwike FB Abby Chandler, Marketing Manager, explains: “We had an overwhelming response to our Carpet for Schools competition, with over twice as many entries as last year. We have enjoyed a strong working relationship with schools over the past 40 years and we congratulate the winners on their success and hope they enjoy their prizes!” Supacord is a very popular flooring choice in the education sector as its tough, fibre bonded construction means it is strong enough to withstand heavy footfall, whilst retaining its appearance. OneWool goes global
The Campaign for Wool has launched a special interiors promotion to encourage manufacturers, retailers, designers, editors and consumers to nominate their OneWool product of choice to celebrate Wool Week in the UK. OneWool - the new promotion for interiors - harnesses the skills, design talent and energy of all those that work with the fibre to create fabrics, art, furnishings and flooring and celebrate the beauty, diversity and practicality of real wool in home décor.
This new promotion follows on from the success of Wool House – the major interiors and lifestyle showcase that was held in March 2013 at Somerset House – where the Campaign for Wool saw a huge wealth of amazing products from wool interior businesses across the world brought together in one place at the same time. The Campaign is now keen to see how they can bring even more wool products together by launching a social media and showroom promotion. “Wool House was a truly stunning showcase and a revelation to many people as to the sheer quantity and quality of wool interior products but it was merely a snapshot of the huge range of wool features for the home,” said Bridgette Kelly of the Campaign for Wool. “OneWool is a much bigger concept as it will also be launched in the USA and as it is open to everyone it is a more inclusive celebration of our fabulous global fibre. We want to encourage all to participate so that we can put wool and its creative edge at the top of the agenda for design and the home,” said Bridgette, adding that the aim was to curate a OneWool gallery from the nominations. Nominations of OneWool products can be made by sending an image and a few words (50-100) explaining the product details and why it has been selected to OneWool@campaignforwool.org and will be used in social media and PR. Businesses are also encouraged to feature their nomination in store displays and e-mail them to their business networks to show how they are participating in the October Wool Week and the longer running OneWool promotion. www.campaignforwool.org onewool@campaignforwool.org 48 November 2013

The competition aims to inspire an interest among the new generation of designers in the art of knotted carpets and is intended to show that the manufacturing process imposes no limits on the creative input of designers. www.domotex.de

Boom! Best business for flooring since 1996 Carpet is on a post-recession roll! Latest retail data says that flooring and furniture sales are growing at their fastest rate for 17 years – the apparent release of all that pent-up demand we’ve been hoping has been stored up since the uncertainties of 2008. The CBI cited the furnishing recovery in the housing market as a primary motivator for strong growth in September that has been carried through into October. It was the first time since 1996 that every one of the retailers questioned by the CBI said sales were higher in September than a year earlier. Barry Williams, chairman of the CBI distributive trades survey panel, said: "It's encouraging to see the high street on the road to recovery, with particularly strong growth from furniture and carpet retailers, department stores and recreational goods retailers. "But the retail sector is not out of the woods yet with consumer confidence still fragile despite the rise in spending." David Tinsley, economist at BNP Paribas, said: "The most obvious caveat to reading too much into this survey is that the relatively good result in August was not reflected in the official retail sales data for that month, which fell 1%. Still, the broad momentum of sales appears firm and upwards. And the CBI survey suggests this remains the case." Carpetright continues to have a torrid time however and its founder Lord Harris has returned to the helm of business after a surprise announcement in October that chief executive Darren Shapland wouldn’t commit to a future contract at the firm. But Phil Harris believes the flooring business has finally hit the bottom and the only way is up – albeit slowly. “The last four years were very tough. But it’s a better market now than three years ago. We’ve reached the bottom,” he said. Carpetright is “absolutely” following the right strategy, he says, which includes the modernisation of its store estate, growing its beds and digital business, improving service and extending ranges.
Interiors inspires
Interiors UK welcomes an impressive line-up of industry experts to the new Design Makers feature at the event which opens at the NEC in Birmingham in January. The programme will include British craftsmen and designers adept at making contemporary and bespoke furniture, ideal for buyers looking to select new products at the show. This new, edited area is home to some of the best in British design, well-versed in making bespoke furniture designs ready for market. Key exhibitors include Base Elements, Jason Muteham, Derrick Ibbott Furniture, Angus Ross, B:Bespoke, Mono Furniture by Design and John Barnard Furniture to name a few. Award-winner, Jason Muteham will launch a new product range at the show that incorporates textiles into wooden furniture in collaboration with upholstery specialist Abbey Chic. Jason comments: “It’s great to see recognition from the industry that one size doesn’t always fit all. Design is all about evolving trends and we’re overjoyed to be part of this pioneering concept, nurturing emerging talent and innovation.” The flooring companies that are set to take part include Furlong Flooring, Mastercraft Rugs, Oriental Weavers, Unnatural Flooring Company and Oriental Carpets & Rugs. Over 500 cutting-edge interior brands are set to take over the NEC from the 19-22 January 2014. INTERIORS UK will be filled with an abundance of new products and interesting seminars offering insightful and valuable industry content. This year also sees the introduction of a dedicated new seminar theatre for lighting, designed to meet visitor demand and ever growing popularity for this part of the show. Also new for 2014 is the ‘Editors Choice’, curated from thousands of items it will showcase the most original new products ideally suited for visitors looking for the fresh designs in the market. www.interiorsuk.com

Finance director Neil Page is looking forward: “There’s a lack of footfall because people’s budgets are still tight. The headline news of green shoots is ahead of where the consumer is but there are encouraging signs. Mortgages approvals are up but only in the last few months. It won’t be until January that we see the benefit.”
Brintons launches new range for the healthcare sector Brintons Carpets has announces the launch of a new range of carpets aimed at the healthcare market. The new range is Brintons’ first designed specifically for the Healthcare sector and marks a further diversification of the business to supplement its other key sectors, including the casino industry, cruise liners, hotels and luxury real estate. Historically, the healthcare market has often compromised creative design and style in favour of functionality and clinical environments. However, Brintons’ new Healthcare range combines bold and bespoke axminster designs with practicality, safety and comfort. The new carpets fulfil all the requirements and needs of healthcare by producing a product that is protective, using anti-microbial technology, has an impervious back to help with spillages, is easy to clean and is durable. The carpets also help trap airborne fibres, which help reduce the risk for asthma and some other allergy sufferers. The high-end Healthcare market is moving away from clinical environments to spaces similar to 5 star hotels and more homely settings, particularly for those in residential homes and retirement communities. It is this emerging global trend that Brintons is seeking to take advantage of. The new market is likely to include retirement villages, private healthcare practices, and clinics. Using its proprietary technology, including High Definition Weave, Brintons is providing the technical solutions to the demands of this evolving market. Commenting on the announcement, Don Coates, Managing Director said: “Brintons is all about innovation and today’s announcement is a significant development for the business, demonstrating our ability to move into new markets and grow our business further.” T 0800 505055 www.brintons.net

The Flooring Show Business Enrichment Seminars The Flooring Show in Harrogate hosted a large programme of ‘business enrichment’ seminars which were highly acclaimed by visitors. This month we’ve picked up on one of the most popular topics and reproduced notes from the seminar by Phil Pond of Scarlet Opus below….
Selling to women: Men like stop lights and women prefer roundabouts! We happen to be in the Interiors industry where it is said that women make more than 85% of the buying decisions. Personally, I have concluded that a woman somewhere makes the larger portion of decisions in all walks of life – they just don’t shout about it so much because they are used to not getting the credit publicly and can live with that happily. So take a look at your retail outlet and products and see if they reflect the fact that most of your sales and potential business will come from a decision made by a woman; and do the processes that you have in place reflect and accommodate the way a woman thinks and behaves?”
“A woman will lead you to the sales you seek without the ‘combat zone’ that as men we believe is an essential part of the process.” In general men, and oddly in particular salesmen, are not very good at one key skill even though they think that they are. Women however, seem to have a natural flair and ability for it even when they are talking! What is it I hear you ask is this skill – it is LISTENING. So if you want to be good at selling to women then you have to get on board double quick with the idea that you have 2 ears and 1 mouth and at the very least should use them in that proportion. continued overleaf...
Soundings from the Show Postive post-show reviews keep coming in from visitors and exhibitors... “I just wanted to contact you to say how impressed I was with the Show this year. The Trends Hub really seemed to bring the event to life, a great addition,” said Natalie Murray-Hurst of Murray Hurst Interiors. David Cormack, Marketing Director of Cormar Carpets said: “at Cormar we enjoyed another great exhibition, seeing plenty of quality customers and receiving a terrific reaction to the latest member of the Sensation family - Sensation Twist.” Carl Anderson of Canadia said: “We placed so many orders during the show that our team back in Ireland had to e-mail all the Irish Reps and advise them that all orders would be delayed due to the huge volume of orders received from the UK!.” “Fantastic - what more do I need to say,” was the comment from Neil Valentine of Furlong Flooring. Richard Harris, Marketing Manager at F Ball noted: "We were really pleased to see so many flooring contractors and distributors at Harrogate this year. With many new products on show we felt it was a great platform for us. We have already booked for next year!" Richard Catt, CEO of the Contract Flooring Association commented: “Whilst to many, Harrogate has historically always been a retail carpet show, the commercial content in 2013 was very evident and of high quality, with well attended seminars on relevant subjects presenting real business opportunities for flooring contractors and others within the supply chain.”

Show Report 2013 The Flooring Show seminars: Selling to women ...continued from previous page In dealing with the modern woman in business you have to have a high degree of confidence, excellent knowledge of your subject, a good memory and flexibility.
Confidence In general women spot weaknesses readily and seem to then place them to one side without feeling the need to exploit them. Men also spot weaknesses, but we are a little blunt, quick and basic in our attempts to then highlight the weakness as we see it as a competition. Guess what this induces in our opponent – the same weakening of the weakness that a women can induce? Nope! An aggressive gladiatorial defence mechanism – well done guys, way to go! So develop quiet and reassuring confidence about yourself, your business and your role before engaging with a woman.
Excellent Knowledge Men like to be sold to, or to believe that they have made a buying decision - you see to us it is all a competition no matter who we are dealing with. It is a challenge, a game however the process is described we see it as something to win. A woman simply doesn’t. She wants a fair and equitable deal where she feels comfortable that the process was beneficial to both parties. In fact, in general, women are prepared to come out of the ‘deal’ slightly worse off than those she engages with as long as it feels good for all and she in essence achieves her goal. How dangerous is that? What this all means is that to conduct business successfully with a woman, you must simply provide information of a high quality in a truthful way and then wait and listen for the questions. A woman will lead you to the sales you seek without the ‘combat zone’ that as men we believe is an essential part of the process. Remember 2 key facts: Women will inherently distrust a man until he demonstrates he is trustworthy. Men generally give men the benefit of the doubt and so we are not expecting the reverse and so may not take the right opening shots. Women will inherently not believe marketing messages but will look for confirmation. Men? Well how many of us challenge a Ferrari advert before we have decided that we just want to drive it?
Good Memory In a group women discuss things but not with any particular structure or in any particular order. Men like order, straight lines, agenda’s and time blocks. Women don’t need these things I have found. If you let their conversation flow and listen very carefully, they cover enormous ground and everything they need to and in the end spit out a conclusion that is as good as any group of guys. So don’t stop this seemingly disjointed methodology, let it flow and listen well and develop the ability to remember key points. They will.
Flexibility This is the best saved until the last…all men in business need to know this one. It will save so much time and provide so much more enjoyment and success. It links everything said above and is the point of my title. Men love straight lines, turning left and turning right, having a destination and getting there, knowing when to stop and when to start and enjoy having the rules. Men sit revving their engines for the unspoken competition, guidance and structure that stop lights at road junctions the world over provide. Women meander, dream, flow, don’t need rigid structure and rules to avoid crashes and fights, get to their destination after they have had time to drink in things that they see en route. Women prefer roundabouts where a general set of rules apply with courtesy, forgiveness and if you make a mistake no matter just go round again you’ll get to the intended route again in the end. This article is reproduced with the kind permission of Phil Pond of leading interior trends forecaster Scarlet Opus. Visit them at scarletopus.com
So develop a thorough knowledge of your subject in order to be able to supply any information requested about it – if you do not know never try to ‘flannel’ a woman – they have built in radar for that, thanks to our actions over 100’s of years!

App happens at Harrogate Woolsafe
The WoolSafe Organisation enjoyed success at the Flooring Show where the newly launched Carpet Stain Cleaning Guide App gained praise and recognition amongst retailers and manufacturers alike as one of the most innovative and useful new resources for expert carpet care advice. Steve Bakker explains: “We have been working hard to develop and launch the WoodSafe Carpet Stain Cleaning Guide app so naturally we are very pleased with the positive reception it has received. We wanted the app to be useful in day-to-day scenarios and hope that it will go a long way in showing that the maintenance of natural fibres can be just as straightforward and easy as manmade fibre carpets.” The Woolsafe Carpet Stain Cleaning Guide app is currently available from the App Store to download for free to Apple iPhones or iPads. You can’t make this up! Cybergold
“Weird, but great product!” “This stuff is amazing” “I can’t believe how good it is!” You couldn’t make up product endorsements as good as this and fortunately the people at Cybergold have discovered they don’t have to. These are extracts from the first three reviews of their anti-slip product for rugs on the Amazon web site. “The feedback we have been getting is amazing,” says Nick Burger. “Amazon and eBay have helped us find out exactly what people are thinking about the product all the time. It has been a good year for us.” Wholesalers and retailers have been reporting similarly positive reactions to the Rug Control products which come in a spray with two strengths for use on either carpets or hard floors and also in a fabric underlay – with no sticky residues. Cybergold sells about 50/50 of the spray compared to the fabric and the products make an excellent add-on sale to rug purchasers. T 01494 761814 www.cybergolduk.com
Vintage gets older Louis de Poortere
Threadbare is the new ‘used’ says Louis de Poortere, though they use the phrase ‘super-used’ to describe the worn-through look of the latest rug ranges. The shabby chic concept has been a real winner for the company and the launch of their Vintage collection two years ago was a runaway success. “Vintage had a used look that proved really popular so if we wanted to go one better it had to be a ‘super-used’ style,” says Alan Russell of LDP. “We have had a very strong reaction to this range, especially in the UK market.” These top-end rugs come in two quite different designs, the “Fading World” collection which uses 15 of some of the loud colours that were so popular in Vintage and then “Cameo” which is pale and interesting in 4 colourways. Postively practical FITA and NICF
The Flooring Show has a superb Demo Zone for showing the latest in installation techniques and the experts at FITA and the NICF put it to good use during the event. Steve Ramsden and Tim Nicholas for FITA and Ian James of the NICF were on hand to show how it should be done and answer questions. Three days of practical demonstrations covered floor preparation and repair and installation for carpet, LVT and laminates. “The demonstrations were well attended and there was genuine interest so it was very worthwhile,” said Steve Ramsden. “Overall the atmosphere seemed very upbeat and positive at the show.” The Demo Zone is supported with material from leading flooring companies such as Ardex, Balterio, Bostik, John Butler, Carpenter, F Ball, Forbo, Gerflor, Hanson, Interfloor, Itec, Junckers, Karndean, Personna, Polyflor, Spotnails, Unifloor, Uzin and Victoria Carpets. www.fita.co.uk www.nicfltd.org.uk
All things bright and beautiful Kersaint Cobb
You can’t miss Kersaint Cobb in the splendid new and vibrant livery of pink and green. “It’s all about colour,” says Mike Richardson. “Buyers start with a colour in mind so let’s make it easy for them and arrange our products that way.” The result is an exceptional set of point of sale units which the company was prototyping at Harrogate in colour-led groupings for the wool ranges called “Nature’s Classic Tones”, for the more neutrals, and “Be a Shade Braver” for a collection of bright colours and stripes. Then there’s the “Naturally Different” display for Kersaint Cobbs signature sisals, coirs, jutes and seagrass. Kersaint Cobb has similarly clear vision about selling wood with a new stand called the Natural Oak Collection with 23 products arranged in a simple, browsable format. “Firstly it’s all about oak,” says Mike, “because that’s what the market wants. And then we want to make it very accessible for the buyer, as easy as browsing through a range of clothing. Wood needs to be more friendly.” T 01675 430 430 www.kersaintcobb.co.uk
A cut above the rest Merryfield Group
Merryfield Engineering have established themselves as a market leader in cutting machines for the carpet trade with their range of robust equipment manufactured to the highest standards in Halifax. Now they are looking at more industrial systems with the launch of their new Firefly machine for 4 and 5m rolls. “We’ve got the retailer market well covered with a range of flexible machines so we’ve focused recently on the high volume, roll distribution business,” says Syd Merryfield. “This is a hard working machine that can do up to 300 plus cuts per shift and we can customize it for the specific needs of each distributor.” The company launched a new brochure at Harrogate which covers their full range of systems from the 2m Gnat for contract flooring and matting to the mainstream Eco+Wasp machines for 4 and 5m carpet, vinyl and artificial grass – and some of their specialist units for sample cutting, carpet tiles and rolling laminate sheets for packing. Change for the better Oriental Weavers
Oriental Weavers came to Harrogate having overhauled 60% of the ranges for the Autumn selling season. “We have eleven new collections here, our biggest ever new selection,” says OW’s Pascal Petit. “The market has been tough for everyone so our job is to find better products all the time to help retailers sell as effectively and profitably as possible.” The new collections include bold florals and strong designs in brighter colours such as oranges, purple and shades of teal. Shaggy rugs and carved textures continue to perform well for Oriental Weavers. The company has its own design studio in Leeds headed by Lesley-Ann Donnell. “We have introduced a lot of colour into the collections this year and the positive response we have had from retailers tells us we’ve done the right thing for the current trends.” T 0113 380 5330 www.orientalweavers.com
Beat the bugs, add value Stainshield
Stainshield has built a strong reputation for the reliability of its core stain protection product for wool carpets which has always included Actigard, an active ingredient for ‘Total Hygiene” that has proved effective against bacteria, mould, mites and other allergens. Now Actigard goes it alone as a product in it’s own right with an eye on the popularity of polypropylene carpets which are stain-resistant but no less susceptible to harbouring bugs than their natural competitors. “There is a strong opportunity here for retailers to add value to the sales of wool and now synthetic carpets with a treatment that responds to consumer interest in allergy-free environments,” says James Parker of Stainshield. This is not a consumer application, the carpet can be pre-treated by the retailer in the warehouse or on-site at a customer’s home for less than 30p per metre. Solid success Stairrods
Stairrods UK are delighted with the success of their latest solid brass Premier Trims shown at Harrogate which were praised for their quality manufacturing and finish. The Premier Trims are available to order now in eight different finishes - brass, antique, satin brass, chrome, brushed chrome, satin nickel and pewter. Four different profiles are available Double Z, Square, Single and Cover, as well as two different lengths 90cm and 270cm. A new estimator's box and in-store display accompanies the range showing all finishes and profiles. The Double Z bar is two products in one. It is a Double Z bar and a Z bar - to achieve this all you need to do is peel off one side with a pair of pliers. Therefore wholesalers only need to stock one profile instead of two. Director John Raine stated, "We are delighted with our new product. We have recently taken on additional staff to help accommodate the demand for the Premier Trims and we have invested in a 2.7m chroming tank enabling us to carry out our own chroming and another flat bed polisher to achieve quicker lead times and the best possible finish." Raising the game FloorSkills
Floorskills came to Harrogate fresh from the opening of their new facilities in Solihull – Europe’s largest independent training centre for the flooring industry – and they are gaining increasing recognition for the quality of their service. “This is a top quality operation and nobody can touch us for the standard of what we do and the value for money it offers,” said Sid Bourne. “The flooring industry has seen the level of professionalism we deliver and has given us a lot of support.” FloorSkills offers a range of courses in carpet fitting, LVT and the installation of laminate and engineered woods with recognized qualifications and they also have a fully-funded apprenticeship scheme. The organisation is not resting on its laurels. Expansion is already underway with a mezzanine floor at the Solihull centre adding another 1,500 of floor space for additional training. T 01564 703900

Got the T shirt? Ball & Young
Ball & Young have always attracted attention for their glamorous Cloud 9 girls who embellish the product’s advertising and the company is capitalizing on that success with a smart new sports shirt available as a limited edition, but only if you find a winning voucher in your next roll of Cloud 9. And you may have noticed that good looking guys have started to feature in some promotions, by popular demand from female sales and services desks around the country! Every little helps and Ball & Young are offering an extra millimetre with the re-launch of their Cloud 9 Radiance underlay, especially suitable for underfloor heating. Real contract competitiveness Beaulieu Flooring Solutions
In addition to the smart retail ranges under the Ideal brand (featured last month), Beaulieu has a market-leading business in the needle felt contract and tradeshow (or expo&events, depending on how you want to call it) sector with its brands REAL and OROTEX and has been increasing the appeal of its offer. For contract applications, “It’s all about competitive pricing and excellent service,” says marketing manager Bart de Bruycker. “We have invested in a system that is tailored to the needs of our customers to get them what they want, when they want it – at the best price.” At Harrogate, the latest developments in Real’s popular and well established Primavera velour and Bedford ribbed carpets were on display, including the format in carpet tiles. Furthermore Beaulieu showed it’s focus on competitiveness in needle felt with the launch of two new entry level contract ranges under the Real brand – Canterbury, a wider rib, and York, a soft velour. Harrogate Review 2013
Making a Lifetile choice Distinctive Flooring
Distinctive has remodeled its product range to make sure it’s as retailer friendly as possible and are getting a great response from the market. “We wanted to keep it simple but without any compromise,” says Mark Bevan. “It’s not enough to have an LVT offer. You’ve got to have a great LVT offer that gives retailers the confidence that they’ll make a good margin on a hassle-free product at the right price and performance level.” As a result, Distinctive offers a package of advice, information and training as well as excellent sales support and presentation.
Sucking up extra sales Sebo
Sebo aren’t what you’d call regulars at the Harrogate show, they were last there 15 years ago! But they’re back with a vengeance with the launch of a compelling offer to make it easier for retailers to add some extra sales of top quality vacuum cleaners with minimum risk.
The core collection is Lifetile, a direct stick LVT in 30 planks and eight tiles with new designs being added all the time. There are four price points from the elegant Italian label set which is registered embossed to add authenticity and a 20-year domestic wear warranty to add confidence down to the entry level Autograph label, a smart grain embossed option.
The quality of the company is maybe best known in the commercial cleaning sector but they have 21 domestic models and the new scheme gives retailers a demonstration machine, attractive point-of-sale and some training. Cleaners are then sold on commission and the sales are then fulfilled by Sebo themselves either through the retailer or direct to the customer’s door.
With so many options, careful thought has been given to Lifetile’s compact display stand which is complemented by a neat sample box set that retailers can easily keep on their counter.
“We’ve had a remarkably strong response from retailers, many of whom have had a ‘lightbulb moment’ when they see the chance this offers for an extra revenue stream,” said Kevin Hockney. “Consumers trust retailers as specialists on flooring and retailers trust the Sebo brand as a market leader. It’s a low risk opportunity with minimum outlay.”

Try it First Metro Group
“Try before you buy” is a novel proposition from a top buying group but Metro is keen that retailers get a real feel for the benefits of joining before they commit so they are offering a free trial membership of up to 12 months. “We are looking for good quality retailers but we know that some of those people worry about how buying groups might somehow take over their business,” says Metro’s Steve Depport. “We have a different style at Metro and we know that independents want to remain independent. This scheme lets them see how we can tailor their membership to meet their needs and how valuable it can be to the bottom line.” Metro is a non-profit making organisation fully focused on making more money for the retailers themselves. The group has a highly professional buying team working with all the leading suppliers and a top quality marketing department to drive the group’s successful Carpet 1st brand and its website which channels new sales opportunities to members. Review 2013
Voice of the trade Wendy Adams – National Flooring Show Director What’s the top reason why retailers mustn’t miss the show? It gives retailers a fantastic opportunity to meet up with their core suppliers to see what new products they are launching and give them direct feedback – there is nothing like talking to somebody face to face! Retailers also have the opportunity to see a huge variety of different products under one roof – it gives them a chance to see what is new in the industry and take advantage of special at show deals. We have also focused on providing useful and informative seminars for retailers – amongst others we had financial and business growth talks and web advice from Google – all these sessions are free to attend and give invaluable advice on how to make the most of your business. Harrogate also provides a focal event for the whole industry every year – it’s a fantastic opportunity to socialize with friends and colleagues and see how everyone in the industry is fairing.
What’s the top reason why exhibitors must be there? It gives companies an unrivalled opportunity to meet with their existing stockists but also gain new ones – there isn’t another event which provides access to as many retailers and commercial contacts under one roof at one time. Companies may have reps out on the road visiting and seeing their existing retailers but they won’t have another opportunity to meet as many new contacts in one place and show off their existing and new products. It’s a great place to make a good first impression.
Has it been more difficult than you thought building momentum for the show? In a word yes! We are very lucky to have a fantastic group of core exhibitors who continue to support the show and embrace the improvements and changes we are making. In these tough times it has been difficult to convince some large companies that the show is a good return on their investment – the main comment we have from this group is that we do not get enough visitors - but we continue to attract over 1200 flooring retailers and distributors to the show as well as hundreds of contract visitors. A frequent comment we get from visitors and prospective visitors is that they want to see more companies there – so we’re doing out upmost to break out of this chicken and egg cycle we are in!

Can the flooring industry afford a ‘proper’, top quality trade show? Yes!! If you look at similar interior shows in the UK we are by far the cheapest for both space only and shell scheme stands! We are focused on making sure we provide an affordable option for everyone, especially those who have taken the cost of an exhibition out of their budgets!
What are you doing to encourage more manufacturers next year? We’re trying to make appointments to see as many companies as possible as soon as possible before their budgets are signed off! I’ve even told Suzy our Sales Manager we may have to camp in Kidderminster until people will see us! Seriously though, we are committed to keeping the prices of the show as low as possible to make it a cost effective option. Apart from that we’re hoping they’ll be encouraged by our marketing campaign which will be just as extensive as it was this year – it would be great to have a few more of them to promote within it!
Which of the new innovations to the show were you particularly pleased with? All of them!! We have really worked hard to try and make the show look better which I do think we have achieved. The retail seminars also seemed to be a big hit this year, especially the ones on finance and internet. We were also delighted with the Trends Hub – I really think it added another dimension to the show and also made the whole industry – visitors and exhibitors think about how design and trends need to be incorporated into their new products. And we will be introducing further innovations for 2014 – watch this space! Which part of organizing the event do you like best? Coming up with new ideas to improve the show and seeing them built and coming to life during the exhibitions!
Which is the worst part of organizing the event? The late nights before the show and the very long hours on show during build up!!!
What’s the strangest request/comment you’ve ever had? We always like to oblige – but someone once asked us if they could have a pole dancer on their stand! We had to decline we didn’t want to offend anyone and anyway had no idea how we would have attached a pole to the stand!!
There must be easier ways to earn a living! What would you be doing if you weren’t doing this? Hopefully I’d just be a Euro Millions winner so I could lie on the beach with a bottle of wine and a book all day!

Readers’ Survey
What would it take to get you to the show next year? Is a decent trade show an unaffordable indulgence, or an essential forum for the industry to raise its game? Would you go if the industry could organise a perfect show. So what’s missing?.. Harrogate Flooring Show organisers are buzzing with ideas and committed to making a go of the show. But what’s missing is enough visitors and enough exhibitors! Last month we reported on that chickenand-egg dilemma - some manufacturers are reluctant to support an event that less visitors attend because not enough manufacturers support it! How do we break out of this cycle? Is the flooring industry too small or too poor to support a decent show? Are retailers trapped in their stores for fear of losing a sale in tough times? Is it good enough to rely on the reps to keep you informed on the latest trends and ranges? Most sectors still regard ‘face-time’ at industry events as a cost effective way to promote their business and find new opportunites that miles on the motorway can’t cover. What about the flooring industry?... Inform the industry. Let us know what you think...

Flower on Flooring
by Dennis Flower
Environmentally friendly comfort With environmental benefits emerging as a key trend within underlays, flooring retailers have another reason to encourage consumers to consider adding these to flooring purchases.
Added comfort has been a recognised factor for persuading consumers to include underlay in their new flooring purchase for some time. More recently, energy saving properties have been added to the mix, with acoustic reduction also included following the rise of apartment living and the need to reduce noise in dwellings. The last few years have seen further developments, with many suppliers continuing to bring new product to the marketplace. A notable trend within these has been a concentration on environmental benefits. The relaunch of Axminster Carpets’ premium combination underlay product Axfelt provides an ideal example of this, being made from a variety of recycled materials. The company states its new image and superior specification is designed to offer customers a “best in market” product, which is the result of extensive and rigorous trials. The resulting benefits have been identified as promoting longevity of carpet, protection for flooring and delivering a superior experience in touch and texture. Axminster’s Axfelt comprises a top layer made from 100 per cent wool waste, a middle layer produced from waste wool, nylon carpet and edge trimmings, then a base layer manufactured using rubber granules from recycled lorry and car tyres. The company states that the thickness of the relaunched product has remained exactly the same, with the roll shortened to make it easier to manoeuvre. Interfloor has also increased the environmental benefits of its underlays. Since 2008, it has increased its proportion of recycled content from 16% to more than 70%. For example, the company explains that its Tredaire brand uses recycled foam from sofas, beds and car seats in its PU underlays such as Dreamwalk and Softwalk. With demand for these premium 110kg products remaining high, Interfloor has developed higher density options of 145kg within the Tredaire range, including Sensation and FR7, its first flame retardant underlay. Further examples of the company's commitment to reducing its environmental impact include recycling underlay trim from its factory, combined with more than £3.5 million invested in technology to reduce factory emissions by over 90%. Recognition of its efforts was provided last year, when it won the Environmental prize within the Lancashire Telegraph awards. Tredaire’s Dreamwalk uses recycled foam

Anglo Recycling business development manager Lee Bridge says his company’s 150-year-old factory is at the forefront of underlay technology, transforming fitters’ trimmings and manufacturing edge trims into high performing underlay: “Off cuts, which the industry sees as waste, are now being seen as a raw material for underlay. Last year we recycled over 600 tonnes of brand new carpet, which was going to landfill.” Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK) estimates 400,000 tonnes of carpet goes to landfill sites each year, the equivalent weight of 156.5 male African elephants per day. Recowool and Crumbwool are helping to address this issue, as well as keeping British floors warm, says Mr Bridge. “Furthermore, our felt manufacturing process is dry and doesn't require any nasty chemicals to hold the fibres together,” he concludes. Texfelt reports that its needle felt underlay is currently experiencing a resurgence in popularity, as customers discover that the Envirolay range of five felt underlays is made entirely from sustainably sourced recycled fibres, with a low carbon footprint of just 345g per kilogram of CO2. “Envirolay felt underlay also has excellent sound absorption qualities and also allows the carpet to breathe, eliminating damp build up,” the company states. Further good news is that the popular TV home improvement show 60 Minute Makeover has chosen Envirolay 42oz underlay for projects featuring carpets in its new series. The first episode is due to be screened on ITV in mid November, hosted by Peter Andre. Uneven subfloors are another issue frequently encountered and QA Products recommends its Finefloor Fibreboard floor levelling panels to ensure wood or laminate flooring can be easily installed. Designed to eliminate unevenness, Finefloor is manufactured from natural wood fibre which is environmentally sustainable and FSC certified, the company states. Further benefits include high thermal insulation to save energy use and high sound reduction performance. The company also explains that the diffusion qualities of the natural fibre contribute towards a healthier indoor climate and and the product can also be disposed of without harm to the environment. Carpet under the spotlight - OneWool nominations
In London, a John Lewis window was literally knitted together over the course of a week! While workshops in knitting were held on the fashion floors over six days. Wool School fashion students had their winning entries in windows across the country and a flock of sheep made a fitting finale at the grand Royal Academy on Piccadilly in London. OneWool - the new interactive promotion for interiors was launched during Wool Week to encourage the interiors industry to nominate their one wool product of choice from fabric and furnishings to carpet and rugs.
“There has been a really great response with textile companies, artists and individuals nominating and then using social media to spread the message for wool,” said Bridgette Kelly, Interiors Director, Campaign for Wool.
ADAM CARPETS - LA DOLCE VITA Adam Carpets has put forward its fantastic La Dolce Vita range which is 80/20 wool/nylon with the elegance of the classical scroll design. It is made using an overtuft process that sees the velvet ground colour made first and the design is then added afterwards, which gives it a stunning textured dimension. ALTERNATIVE FLOORING - WOOL KNOT Alternative Flooring’s Wool Knot is 100% natural wool and its colour bank is totally inspired by nature and uses soft, undyed wools - a very eco-friendly and feel-good flooring. ROGER OATES - CHEVIOT COLLECTION Roger Oates - has nominated their new Cheviot range using British Wool. Through experimentation and development in collaboration with wool merchants and spinners, a Cheviot wool blend yarn was created especially for the range. Roger Oates comment on the durable spring and the way the yarn allows the colour to sing through with tones of blue, orange, green and grey. The updated classic border and herringbone designs from the archives make it a young and timeless range. You can see more nominations at campaignforwool.org and others will be featured on this page next month.

Homes & Gardens - wool room designer competition
Homes & Gardens, the interior lifestyle magazine that features some of the most stunning interiors has joined up with the Campaign for Wool to promote wool in a ‘Design a Wool Living Room’ competition. The competition which is sponsored by Brintons, the KLC School of Interior Design and the British Institute of Interior Designers features in the November issue of Homes & Gardens. The aim is to encourage greater use of wool in the home and there are three different entry levels - Professional, Student and Amateur. Winners will receive a Brintons wool rug and a hamper of luxury wool products and the winning entries will be created, styled and photographed for the March issue of the magazine.
“We are thrilled to be working with The Campaign For Wool on this exciting project; having been wowed by the stunning room schemes created by interior designers at The Wool House last March, opening up the opportunity up to our readers seems like the next logical step. I can't wait to see the inspired ideas they come up with,” said Deborah Barker, Editor-on-Chief, Homes & Gardens.

Social Media: The “How To” Guide Helen Kitchen PR is a freelance PR and social media consultant with clients in the flooring, plumbing, giftware, technology and construction sectors. At this year’s Flooring Show, Helen was part of the team providing seminars in the Business Theatre next door to the Trends Hub. For those of you who missed it, here’s a brief summary of her guide to using social media for business…
SOCIAL MEDIA ROUTE FINDER
At the start of any journey, it’s essential to decide where you are heading if you want to get where you’re going to! Social media is no different. There’s no point joining Twitter or Facebook unless you know what you want to get in return for your investment. How else will you judge your success? So the first thing you must do is decide on your goals: more sales, better customer service, greater brand awareness, or feedback and insights into what your customers want. Travel companions
I find long journeys can be boring – and there’s nothing better than amusing companions to help the time fly! Decide who you want to bring with you on your journey, and that will help you decide which social media channels are best for your route to success. Twitter is great for listening to people talking about a diverse range of topics. It gives us Superman’s powers of tuning in to conversations between people we might not know, but whose problems we can help to solve.
Once you’ve set up a Twitter account – for free! - look for people to follow: people you already know “offline”, the local media, networking groups, mums clubs, interior designers, local business neighbours, your competitors. You can use # hashtags to search for people tweeting about your business area eg #YorkshireHour, #flooring, #Warrington.
Then start joining their conversations, and sharing your knowledge and expertise as well as information about your products, services and special offers.
There are millions of people using Facebook now – to stay in touch with friends, or find special offers from their favourite brands. Using a Facebook Company Page – which is also free – gives businesses the chance to promote their products, services and special offers on a platform where there is a potentially huge audience. It’s a bit like bus stop advertising – if you can make your offer eye-catching, people will notice it! So make sure you have some nice photos and lots of information about what your business offers on your page. Running contests and “live” chats are just two ways to attract fans to your page, and to give people something they want in return for their attention.
The most important thing to remember about your social media journey is you must have a plan about where you are going or what you want to achieve. If you set yourself a goal, it will help you keep “on track”. So once you’ve decided on your plan, set up your accounts and then start making connections. And above all, have a good trip!
