Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED
WOVEN
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.
Level loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.
CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.
Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.
Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.
Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours. Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the
BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves.

Regular Maintenance Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur. Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers! Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet. Use only WOOLSAFE approved products WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.
The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.
Periodic Cleaning When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company. If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE approved products. Look for the WOOLSAFE Mark on the bottle or package. It is best to engage the services of a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning company. To get a really expert job done entrust the work to a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. These companies are fully trained, have been in business for a considerable length of time, are members of one or more recognised professional trade associations related to the cleaning industry and have a reputation for top quality service. And they use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents on your wool carpets and rugs!
If you have a problem with a carpet or rug that requires an independent inspector, a network of carpet complaint investigators, trained and registered by The WOOLSAFE Organisation is available throughout the UK and Ireland. WOOLSAFE Registered Inspectors have extensive experience in investigating the causes for carpet complaints based on their practical involvement with carpets and rugs over many years. They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers, retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can carry out or commission tests where required, and will provide comprehensive reports. Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
www.flooringone.co.uk Contact: Glenn Harding Tel: 0121 683 1426 glenn.harding@flooringone.co.uk
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Increase sales
• ‘Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.floorwise.co.uk
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.
www.numa-online.co.uk
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
Poor or old underlay will...
• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING
SPROUTING
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
SAMPLES The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.
SHEDDING The original carpet tile
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
PULLED LOOPS
This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.
10
• shedding • pulled loops
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
SHADING
STATIC Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.
FADING ON WOOL Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
THE STOCKLISTS April 2012

PILE REVERSAL
FLATTENING
(SEE SHADING)
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
INDENTATIONS When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
SOILING Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave
sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

THE STOCKLISTS April 2012
Flooring factsheet Wool fibre THE BEST CARPET WOOL Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home. THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years. Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
SAFE
DURABLE
Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer. Safety Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly. Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites. Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

IT’S TIME TO SHOW OFF THE NYLONS! Most of you might think of us as a supplier of middle to high end loop pile carpets in wool and wool mixes, but since Edel and Telenzo came together as part of the Edel Group, we’ve also been producing some fabulous nylon qualities as well – so much so, we’ve just put together a special product and price list focussing specifically on our polyamide and Edelon ranges and we’re supplying on demand 45x 45cm wall samples (ask your agent for more details). All these qualities are now available in cut lengths as well as rolls. Some of these products are already doing really well – Wild Romance and Verdi, specifically. We’ve high hopes for the gorgeous Amore – which, says our own Lesley Inman “is like walking on silk!” – and also Gloss and the new Malta. Plus, we’ll be introducing another new nylon product in the summer, which promises to be “totally different”. With a pile weight of 2000gsm, Amore is a really luxuriantly thick deep cut pile quality but being made from high grade polyamide 6.6 yarn – the very best you can buy – it’s also fantastically resilient! Says Lesley, who has Amore in her living room: “When I moved an extremely heavy bookcase to vacuum after about six months, the carpet bounced back in place with just the touch of my hand – amazing!” It’s Scotchgarded, Action back, 4m wide only and available in six colours – Parchment, Seal, Ash, Expresso, Quicksilver and Ink.
Wild Romance
Gloss is a heavy duty 1/10th gauge level loop pile quality. Pile height is just 3.7mm but as the name suggests this is a beautiful, high lustre yarn, which looks so superb it’s available in 18 rich colours some samples are shown above.
Super soft Wild Romance is a slightly lighter weight option – at 1440 gsm pile weight – and consequently comes in both four and five metre widths and a broader colour bank of 15 shades. Verdi is a luscious, luxurious 3/8th gauge twist shine but also very hard wearing. It comes in 12 great colours – Alabaster, Ash, Chartreuse, Silver, Turquoise, Framboise, Hot Pepper, Otter, Graphite, Chocolate, Aubergine and Black.

with a 36mm pile height and a lustrous
COMING SOON Look out also for another new product, Malta, another cut pile option but with a very fine gauge, almost frisee construction. It has a beautiful colour bank of 11 shades.

retailers respond to industry issues
Ample samples? Is the industry getting it right in providing sampling to consumers? Sampling is a key part of the sales process - keeping customers interested and engaged by following through from their visit to your store. But the current situation is mixed with different approaches by different manufacturers including in-store sample swatches and next day postal services. But some retailers still take the scissors to their pattern books to send consumers home with a piece of the carpet or vinyl. It’s a major expense for the trade so we need to get it right. What can be done better? Do new ranges get sampled quickly enough? Do sample services direct to consumers help or hinder? Inform the industry and tell us what you think. Join the debate...

Lano Carpets has introduced a stunning new display unit for Ultimo as it revamps the high-end lifestyle collection for modern audiences. Keeping the familiar black colour of the previous stand, the new stand pushes forward with brand new lifestyle imagery that sets the Ultimo collection as a stylish and exclusive take on carpet for the home. GoodWeave UK has officially launched its annual design competition where design students from all over the UK and Ireland are invited to create a hand-knotted rug with distinct commercial appeal. The competition, cosponsored by Jacaranda Carpets and WovenGround, aims to encourage young designers to think seriously about ethical manufacture, right from the start of their careers and to highlight GoodWeave’s work to end exploitative child labour in the rug industry. This year’s brief is called Retro Funk and draws on illustrations, textiles and ceramics from one of the most iconic design eras of all – the 1960’s and 70’s. Entrants are asked to take inspiration from patterns created by illustrious names such as Charley Harper, Lucienne Day, Marian Mahler and Marimekko to design an original retro style of their own. The winner receives a design fee and will see their design made into a high quality rug, hand-knotted in silk and wool to be retailed by Jacaranda and WovenGround. With more and more people demanding ethically produced goods, GoodWeave’s charitable work is more important than ever. Samantha Towle, Executive Director of GoodWeave UK says the design world has an important part to play: “It is vital that design students are not only trained to create innovative products but are also made aware that as a designer their responsibilities extend beyond the visual and include supply chain ethics. This competition introduces students to the reality of the exploitation of children in the rug industry and will hopefully plant the seed that they can make a positive difference if they source and purchase responsibly and ethically throughout their careers. “ The competition closes Friday 18 May. The winner and up to six runners up will be announced by GoodWeave UK at the end of May, followed by the unveiling of the winning rug at Decorex International in September. Flower on Flooring News News Made to measure While all retailers know the benefit of having a diverse selection of stock to appeal to all customers and budgets, the ability to provide bespoke carpet can allow them to move into new areas and provide customers with truly unique product.
Brontë’s specialised embossed plus corner
Technology is playing its part in this, with Axminister Carpets’ online Carpet Design facility illustrating the point, aimed at small hospitality and business owners seeking to create their own flooring. Richard Lawrence, Axminster Group Head of Marketing, says: “The facility guides you through the design process, from selecting the pattern, creating your own colourway from a palette of 32 colours and then visualising how your carpet would look in a variety of 3D roomsets. From just 100m2, business owners, or even home owners, can create a beautiful semi-bespoke axminster woven carpet that perfectly matches to their interior, or that sets the scene for future refurbishment.
Managing Director Andrew Broughton said: "We have specialised in producing made to measure carpets for 30 years now and at the better end of the market there is still strong demand for quality carpets with no joins. We can manufacture carpets to the size and shape of the room, in one piece, with no joins and very little waste. We are proud to be one of the very few genuine custom made manufacturers left in the UK." Axminster’s online Carpet Design facility is a key innovation
“Whether classical, contemporary, floral or geometric designs, businesses can find an ideal pattern and recolour it so that the effect can either be subtle or bold.” Mr Lawrence states that while semi-bespoke is becoming more popular, the process can be time consuming. “We appreciated that many small business owners had neither the time nor inclination during the day and so we made the process more accessible by turning it into an online tool that can be used easily, anytime and with great results,” he says. Experience is obviously essential in this area and Brontë Carpets refers to its 30 years of producing high quality, custom carpet in plain 100% wool and plain 80/20 wool/nylon, also specialising in hand crafted inlaid and carved borders. Every order is custom made to the colour and size of the room and any colour can be specified via Bronte's special dye service, with carpets supplied to any width, from a stair runner up to 12m wide with no joins. It also offers a made to plan service, including ‘L’ and ‘T’ shapes to further reduce wastage.

Victoria Carpets offers both residential and contract sectors a choice of either tufted or wilton bespoke carpets and plans to introduce a dedicated contract sales team. One difficulty to overcome is that retailers and contractors believe that they need to order large quantities for a custom carpet, which is not the case, the company states. For example, in a tufted graphics design, produced in up to 10 colours and up to 4m wide, it only needs orders of 300 sq m. For its Jacquard Brussels Wilton, the company offers a wide choice of widths and styles and orders of as little as 50 sq m. Richard Meager, Jacaranda Carpets Managing Director, says company growth is due to the flexibility, advice and support provided. "On the carpet side we can colour match Jacaranda's Heavy Velvet broadloom, but it is on our bespoke rug business that growth is greatest. We have loyal retail and interior design customers who regularly use Jacaranda's Himalayan hand-knotting service to make rugs to their own unique designs, others who alter or re-colour Jacaranda designs to suit particular projects.” Hand-woven rugs in natural tones and textures are offered, with customers also choosing broadloom textures for use in rugs, which can be hand-finished in India, or cut to size and bordered in Britain.

by Dennis Flower Cavalier focuses on quality and attention to detail
"We have just opened a new showroom in The Design Centre Chelsea Harbour, to satisfy customer demand for a destination where they can view and receive advice on the bespoke opportunities offered by Jacaranda Carpets," says Mr Meager. Long experience is also utilised by Cavalier Carpets, with custom carpet production supplied to clients around the world, from private houses to cruise liners. Service, quality and timescales are all paramount and all the ‘i’s have to be dotted and ‘t’s crossed before embarking on custom projects. “Any small issue at the outset can become a huge problem further down the line. There is no quick fix for anything in contract. One order won, is just that! At Cavalier we focus on the long term, wanting the customer of that one order to become a returning customer in the future,” says Hans Lowe, Cavalier Sales Director. “The key to a custom production department is a long term strategy. Contract work will always bring peaks and troughs to production, the skill is to smooth them out as much as possible. The 'four corners of the globe', need to be smoothed round as much as possible,” he says.
Heckmondwike’s impressive installation at Malcom Arnold Academy
Abby Chandler, Heckmondwike Marketing Manager, says: “In today’s competitive marketplace, specifiers are constantly looking for ways to differentiate their projects and custom flooring is an eye-catching and effective way of creating an individual ‘stamp’. End users too are increasingly asking for bespoke carpet designs – whether that’s to create a bright and creative learning environment in a school, for example, or to maintain a strong sense of brand identity for a corporate client. “Fibre bonded carpet presents an ideal opportunity for custom installations, as the robust construction enables a wide variety of colours to be cut and laid together to create intricate designs, with no danger of fraying. This is also a popular choice for entrance areas and a growing number of organisations are choosing to incorporate a logo or other bespoke design into their entrance flooring, to really emphasise branding messages from the moment a visitor sets foot in the building,” Ms Chandler concludes. Signature Carpets, currently celebrating 30 years in the supply of bespoke, hand-tufted rugs and carpets, has seen increased demand for individuality and says subtlety does not have to be sacrificed. “Careful use of colour and design to reflect interior design statements is one emerging alternative to high impact statements of personality,” says Stephen Garrod, Managing Director. “Drama in deep colours is now more likely to be reserved to simple lines or solid expanses where they add warmth to an overall relaxed landscape.” Textural pattern is now common to provide an unobtusive background to a room’s décor, he states. With its design and manufacture based in the UK, the company works with interior designers and flooring retailers who appreciate that expert personnel, in tune with their needs and close at hand, will deliver the client’s dream carpet with no compromises or complications, says Mr Garrod.

The British Wool column British Wool at the Ideal Home Show Carpets, cloth and contemporary furniture… British Wool takes the wool story direct to the consumer by attending one of the UK’s longest running – 103 years - and most popular home interest events – The ideal Home Show. Always considered the premier event of the home design calendar, it is packed with all the latest looks and improvements for your home and garden. Opened this year by HRH The Prince of Wales, Patron of the Campaign for Wool, it is only fitting that the British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB) should be there too. The BWMB stand shows a broad and innovative selection of wool products – to show the diversity of wool and also to get the people interested. There is of course, a large selection of British Wool carpets provided by John Lewis, and to show the beauty of creative tufting – the stand features textile designer Emily Twomlow’s stunning Inspired Rugs. “I wanted to show how wool is a very flexible fibre and can be used in many different ways. These rugs by Emily Twomlow are a completely unique offering, perfect for by the Aga and show how the same wool used in a plain tufted Wool Twist, can be used to create the most artistic floor features,” said Richard Poole of the BWMB. Needless to say, even the underlay is Swaledale and Herdwick wool by Fairbank Textiles. The carpet on the floor was kindly provided by Axminster Carpets. Elsewhere on the stand there is contemporary furniture by Assembly Room featuring cloth by Camira and a selection of superb upholstery and menswear cloths by Ardlanish Weavers. Lastly, Second Nature UK showcases Thermafleece natural wool insulation.
“There is a huge amount of interest in all types of wool product at the moment, so I felt a combination stand at this show would be a perfect opportunity to promote the skills and superior standards of our British Wool industry. You find when you spend time talking to people on trade stands, that the wool carpet consumer is the person who will also be interested in the cloths and the furnishings too,” said Richard. The Ideal Home Show is open now until 1st April at Earls Court in London.
Best of British – Velvets by Brintons British Wool ranges offer immense style options and the fabulous luxury of underfoot comfort that makes the home so welcoming after a day on hard floors! Different looks on the floor are accomplished by the ways in which manufacturers produce carpet. Velvet – the luxurious finish – is one that adds a sumptuous quality to the home and adds that plush feeling. A good velvet carpet which offers smooth sheen to the floor is a true classic. We have asked Kelly Butler, Design Manager of Brintons, to tell us about the changes to their velvet ranges and why it really is a ‘Best of British’. “Brintons' velvets have had a complete makeover this spring - 18 new colours are added across the collections, meaning that there is immense choice for the perfect carpet in the perfect colour. Each velvet collection has its own unique finish and appeal, all woven in England by Brintons. “Majestic, our most luxurious velvet, is sumptuous to touch and encapsulates timeless, iridescent glamour. Sophisticated and indulgent, new colours include Polished Silver, Frosted Diamond and Gentle Chenille. “True Velvet incorporates all of Brintons quality and delivers it with a fresh individual style. New shades include Almost Green and Trenchcoat, these sophisticated chameleon colours allow ageless style and freedom to decorate. Finally, Finepoint, bridges Brintons velvet and twist collections. Here subtle texture and the inclusion of heathers make Finepoint incredibly adaptable. Here too we have new colours, Seurat Marble and Constable Millstone echoing natural elements.

Brand leadership New survey shows Tredaire and Duralay are at least four times more popular than competitor brands. A new market survey has shown that Interfloor’s leading underlay brands, Tredaire and Duralay, are still the most popular with consumers – and by a long way. The survey was carried out by an independent marketing services company (dR) in November 2011. The internet survey asked 1,051 consumers whether they had bought a new underlay with their carpet and which brands, of all the leading players in the market, they recognised. Steve Woodhead, marketing director at Interfloor, commented on the results. “Periodically we like to check on the consumer’s perception of underlay brands, including ours. It’s important that the consumer recognises and trusts leading brands and that, in turn, helps the retailer sell branded products with confidence. We’re encouraged that Tredaire and Duralay are maintaining their popularity with consumers but we still have work to do to raise interest in the category so that more people choose to buy a branded underlay with their new carpet.” In terms of brand awareness Duralay came first with 31%, Tredaire was second with 27%, followed by Cloud 9 at 7%, Carpenter at 5% and Hyper at 3%. The survey also found that 49% of consumers had bought a new underlay with their carpet. “The results are similar to the previous survey. I was quite surprised to find that 49% of consumers said that they had bought an underlay with their carpet. This is exactly the same as a survey we did before the recession and it suggests that retailers have been very effective at retaining underlay volumes despite very challenging market conditions,” says Woodhead.
The survey also indicated that the consumers who were most likely to buy underlay were those aged over 50. This suggests that manufacturers may need to adopt different strategies to communicate the message to younger consumers. “We’re always looking for better ways to communicate the underlay benefits in store but we’re also thinking about how this should be done in the digital age when a significant number of consumers use the internet to gather information about potential purchases.”
“Periodically we like to check on the consumer’s perception of underlay brands, including ours.”
The proportion of consumers purchasing underlay has remained at 49% and therefore there is a significant opportunity for some retailers to improve their profits by getting a few more of their customers to buy a new underlay with their carpet. Steve Woodhead says, “If a retail store has 49% of their carpet customers buying underlay then persuading just 5 of the 51 in a 100 who don’t buy underlay, will increase sales and profits by 10%. We are very keen to work with our retail customers and help them to be more successful in doing this. Challenging market conditions are likely to be with us for a while yet so anything like this that helps to improve sales and profits is worth taking very seriously”
“We need to ensure that interest in the leading underlay brands, like Tredaire and Duralay, is nurtured. They increase customer satisfaction and re-purchase through the retailer, and this improves retailer margins. To support this we will improve and extend our range of branded point of sale to assist the retailer in selling our brands. Our sales team work with our customers to find the best product solutions and we have seen an encouraging increase in the sales of branded underlays such as Tredaire Softwalk and Dreamwalk, and Duralay Treadmore and Timbermate Excel.”

Recycling success Recofloor, the UK’s vinyl flooring take-back scheme, will be recognising its vinyl flooring recycling champions at a sustainability seminar and awards event at The Building Research Establishment Innovation Park (BRE) at Watford on April 18th. Entitled ‘Recofloor – Closing the Loop’, the day will feature key speakers from the flooring industry and explain how the scheme, founded by leading flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor, works with the supply chain to divert vinyl flooring waste from landfill. Material is recycled back into products, including new flooring, which benefits the environment and significantly reduces collectors’ waste disposal costs.
Record waste performance Recofloor continues to break waste vinyl flooring recycling records with 447 tonnes collected in 2011. This figure is evenly split between smooth offcuts (34%), safety offcuts (33%) and smooth uplifted vinyl (33%) and is well over double the 189 tonnes recovered in 2010. Ease of use and increased awareness, along with regulatory and legislative drivers are all factors that have contributed to Recofloor’s tremendous success, according to Jane Gardner, of resource recovery specialists Axion Consulting, which manages the scheme.
Spearheading the morning seminar session is Dr Jason Leadbitter, Sustainability & Compliance Manager at INEOS ChlorVinyls who will be exploring key sustainability credentials of PVC for use in the construction sector. Other guest speakers include Richard Catt, Chief Executive Officer at the Contract Flooring Association, Stuart Blofeld, developer of the BRE’s Smartwaste Scheme, along with WRAP and Recofloor representatives. “As well as celebrating our achievements, it will be an excellent opportunity to share expert knowledge, learn more about how Recofloor can work for your business and meet fellow industry professionals,” explains Jane Gardner, of resource recovery specialists Axion Consulting, which manages the scheme.
“Recofloor’s straightforward, cost-effective and efficient collection system has diverted a total of 700 tonnes of waste vinyl flooring from landfill since it was launched in 2009,” says Jane. “This benefits the environment, reduces members’ waste disposal costs and recycles material back into products, such as new flooring.” Calculations by Axion show by capturing and recycling 700 tonnes of smooth and safety flooring vinyl – in preference to using virgin material in new products Recofloor has produced a net reduction of 0.56 million kilos of CO2 emissions. This equates to driving an average family petrol car 1.6 million miles (nearly 67 times round the equator) or taking 138 cars off the road for a year. Recofloor’s website ‘cost calculator’ is a popular feature with members who can calculate their cost-savings by recycling vinyl flooring waste, as opposed to landfilling it. Collectors also gain green credentials which helps them win more business.
Recofloor, which became a Limited Company in 2011, has grown to 437 members across the supply chain, from waste transfer stations to flooring contractors and distributors. Jane hopes the event will boost membership even further, saying: “Increased awareness of the scheme’s benefits helped to attract 192 new flooring contractors and nine further drop-off sites last year.” Recofloor will also host its second awards ceremony, which recognises the commitment and achievements of Recofloor collectors throughout the UK. Zero to landfill Leading UK manufacturer, Cormar Carpets, has achieved its goal to have ‘zero waste to landfill’ at its Brookhouse Mill and Holme Mill manufacturing sites. Nationally 400,000 tonnes of carpet waste is buried in UK landfill every year and with the German and Dutch governments recently banning carpet waste from landfill altogether, it’s likely that the UK government will follow in their footsteps. To counter the threat, Cormar Carpets has been working with Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK) to reduce post-consumer waste to landfill nationally, as well as eliminating manufacturing waste going to landfill locally, at its own two mills in Lancashire. Over the last three years Cormar has worked to ensure: a 50% overall reduction in production waste at both sites, including edge trims and joins. The company has also acheived a 90% reduction in carpet fault waste produced during manufacturing and 100% re-use or recycling of cardboard, plastic and metal tubes. The most recently completed project was a baling press installed at Cormar’s Brookhouse Mill site. It compacts the backing plant waste carpet ‘edge trim’ and ‘sewings’ ready for collection by a third party. To date CRUK has reduced the amount of carpet going to landfill by 10% in just two years. It has also helped divert 137,020 tonnes of carpet waste from landfill to recycling or energy recovery (equivalent to 8472 football pitches). And it has expanded its affiliated carpet re-use, recycling and energy recovery outlets from six to 24. CRUK has also provided a lead role on carpets within the Flooring Resource Efficiency Plan funded by WRAP and BRE Trust. Following implementation of Cormar’s 3Rs initiative (Reduce, Re-use and Recycle) two years ago, Cormar has now turned its aims into reality. “We don’t plan to stop here. We have several ongoing projects with further capital investment in new technology planned. The aim is to enable Cormar to stay well ahead of the fast changing landscape of environmental responsibilities for UK companies.,” said finance director Robert Barker. T 01204 881234 48 April 2012

Anything could happen A four day challenge. A 3,000 mile journey across Europe. A vehicle costing less than £500. A £10,000 fundraising target. Welcome to the Scumrun www.scumrun.com Tackling the infamous ‘banger’ rally on 3 May will be no easy feat for Landale Carpet’s finance manager Susie Little, especially as she will spend the duration dressed as Thunderbirds’ Lady Penelope. But accompanied by her very own ‘Parker’ (friend Sean O’Malley) and travelling in a custom-modified version of FAB 1 – a now bright pink Mercedes E-class estate – Susie is taking this task very seriously. Because whilst the event is set to be a huge adventure for the 100 cars taking part, the reason behind the mammoth Scumrun journey is to raise much-needed funds for children’s charity Sparks www.sparks.org.uk. Sharing her thoughts about what she feels is a wonderful organisation, Susie explains: “Sparks champions vital research which helps reduce the health risks of premature birth, increase the life expectancies of newborn babies, and further the treatment of serious and life-limiting illnesses in children. They’ve ploughed £20 million into this crucial work so far, but there is more to be done.” Susie experienced tragic loss in her close family last year when her beautiful niece Matilda died from a heart attack when she was only 28 hours old. Voice of the Trade Chris Moffat Executive Chairman, SMG
“
How different are the various buying groups from one another? The overall aim of the various Buying Groups is the same in my view... to help the independent retailer to be competitive throughout the purchasing process. The main difference is centred on how each group presents its product offering, whether it be primarily the promotion of ‘own brand’ or the manufacturers brand. Individual group philosophy also has to be taken into consideration depending on whether a British or a Global sourced product portfolio preference has been selected and adopted. Are retailers right to worry about losing their independence? No, because it is not in the interest of any Buying Group to diminish or take away the retailers biggest asset... their independence. Are you surprised how many retailers are not members of groups? Yes, but I think that this has a lot to do with the perception that they may lose their independence. To help alleviate their fears, I would suggest that any retailer considering membership should check out the Buying Group ‘Factsheet’ page that is published in every issue of The Stocklists. Overall, what proportion of the retail trade do you think should be members? Simple!... All forward thinking, professional, image conscious, credit worthy independents who are preferably Carpet Foundation retail members employing Flooring Guild trained staff, trading from bona fide retail premises, having adopted the OFT recognised Code of Practice and equally possessing a passion for supporting the British manufacturing sector, should be members of SMG... but I have always been an idealist albeit, realistic and a little biased towards the organisation I represent! Are there any types of flooring retailer that are not suitable for membership (e.g. too specialist, too small)? I have always considered that size does not come into the equation and as long as they are credit worthy, operate from bone fide retail premises and have the appropriate professional attitude, they are welcome. Sole online traders, individuals trading from home and vans, multiples, wholesale distributors and fitters do not qualify. Is there a lack of understanding of how buying groups work generally in the flooring industry? Buying Groups have been in existence for almost half a century, so I think that there is generally a very good understanding of how we operate as a sector. The Groups do differ in how they operate and it is up to the individual retailer to decide which Group suits their requirements.
52 April 2012
“Buying Groups have been in existence for almost half a century, so I think that there is generally a very good understanding of how we operate as a sector.” Apart from the price discounts/margin advantages, what do you think retailers value most about buying groups. There are two things mainly in my view... a) Retail members enjoy the benefit of receiving regular information about new products, trends, industry initiatives and activities that may not otherwise be readily available to them outside the Group network system, and b) They are part of a collective network of likeminded professional retailers with whom they can seek advice or share experiences. Do manufacturers regard buying groups as a force for good or a necessary evil? I like to think that most manufacturers view us favourably as long as they continue to reap the benefit of achieving additional sales backed up with constant promotional and PR support. Can groups get in the way of long-established supplier relationships? There is no reason why they should because most Buying Groups maintain a policy of allowing and encouraging their retailers to build closer working relationships with their ‘approved’ suppliers, which inevitably leads to growth for both parties.
“
What’s the biggest single advantage of being in a buying group? The obvious answer to this question is the discounts, rebates and preferential prices that Buying Group members enjoy. However, the real advantage becomes evident when you consider that these benefits are ‘permanent’ and not only available to retailers when economic times become challenging for suppliers.
Is buying group membership growing quickly enough? We are in no hurry at SMG... we just want good professional independent retailers to seriously consider what we have on offer and the additional benefits that we are confident they will enjoy through membership. We prefer ‘quality’ of retailer rather than play the quantity game and I am sure all Buying Groups and their Suppliers share this view. Has the recession had an influence on membership? We at SMG, feel fortunate that we have not seen any significant decline in membership during the current recession and membership enquiries are still forthcoming on a daily basis. Unfortunately, proprietor retirements and lease renewals have led to some store closures during the current economic climate and this is one of the main reasons why we need to maintain constant recruitment activity. Furthermore, the recession has influenced some retailers into adopting a culture of ‘trading down’ in a desperate attempt to secure orders from a diminished level of foot-fall which has inevitably, and sadly, put pressure on the quality end of the manufacturing sector.

Stand and deliver Manufacturers compete for a piece of your sales floor There’s an “arms race’ in point-of-sale and manufacturers are wheeling out their big guns to win the battle of the high street to get the attention of retailers and consumers. Competition for floor space in retail stores has never been more intense and that’s good news for retailers. “There is a tremendous opportunity for retailers now to have great looking stores,” says Andrew Fry, head of leading POS manufacturers T&E Display Group. “Competition for retail space is intense and manufacturers are increasingly aggressive in securing their place in your store. “It’s something of an arms race and that’s good because the quality is improving rapidly, not just the quantity of POS. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to look good in store,” says Andrew.
“There is a much stronger appetite for change than there used to be but they want units that not only help them sell, but help them sell better.”
Manufacturers are increasingly aware that independent retailers are the gatekeeper to sales growth and POS can make a major impact in the commitment to a brand or new range. But the costs to manufacturers are substantial so they can’t afford to get it wrong.
Larger and better quality graphics have become more dominant – again, manufacturers are spending hard-earned money on expensive room-set photography to inspire consumers and make ranges more distinctive amongst a wall full of sample racks.
“Retailers are getting more discerning and are very choosy about what’s on offer,” says Andrew Fry. “There is a much stronger appetite for change than there used to be but they want units that not only help them sell, but help them sell better – looking for those opportunities to trade up.”
In terms of materials, wood remains a popular choice – seen as implying a solid quality to the flooring samples – but there is a strong trend towards clean, sharp lines in white metal and some strong colours.
Manufacturers have invested heavily – units are not only expensive to make but they have high delivery costs across the UK. As this investment is being made in a tight market, manufacturers are increasingly savvy in monitoring the performance of POS so that they know which stores are worth the spend.
Sound, lights, action Key trends in modern POS centre around a modular approach – smaller, more flexible units which can be easily configured to dress any shape of store – and carry different types of ranges. Stores within stores and mini roomsets are popular – ‘retail theatre’ as it is called – but they need space.
POS technology has seen the growing use of video technology embedded into wall displays and lecterns but the systems get mixed responses from retailers who sometimes see them as a distraction. However, when there is an interesting story to tell such as Furlong’s Carefree video or Mohawk’s famous rhino, then screens have been well received. Electronic lighting is becoming more common with LEDs giving a strong, white light that is cheap to run and stays cool so avoiding any consumer safety issues. The feature is this month’s The Stocklists aims to show some of what’s on offer. The time is now to improve your store.

Ten tips for top-selling stores 1. Ensure a large mix of standard and niche products to reassure consumers they have plenty to choose from – even if they ultimately go for something safe.
6. Create different areas for different product types so that consumers are not confused by too much on offer in the same place.
2. Mix more expensive items with cheaper products so that the opportunity to trade up is always there – don’t place the high end products on their own or in an increasing price layout where they can be disregarded by customers.
7. Avoid an ‘industrial’ environment – too many stores are sheds with industrial roofs, lighting and ventilation on show. Use suspended ceilings, black paint and screens to hide the worst parts – the buying environment should be as domestic as possible.
3. Use your window – too often this is a neglected area but a good display reassures consumers that you’re a smart retailer. 4. Use your floor! Have the most popular of your higher margin products laid in sections of your floor. Consumers like to buy what they can see in a larger sample. 5. Keep literature racks full – empty displays look tired and complacent and consumers like to have material to take away – and you can clip your business card to it.
Wools of New Zealand Modern and flexible, the Laneve stand is exclusive to WNZ Premier Partners. An attractive stand alone island unit or a wall unit, the stand befits a range of carpets from Ulster, Brockway and Ryalux that are the cutting edge in sustainability, with every carpet traced back to the original farm.
8. Use soft furnishing, furniture items and flowers around the flooring displays to create a homely environment. 9. Avoid empty racks, dead bulbs and dark video screens. 10. Be careful about locating roll stock – very often it has a prominent position and lures consumers past the higher margin material. Consumers not only know it’s cheaper but the large area helps them visualise it in their own home which is more challenging with small samples.

The ever popular Kidderminster Carpet Manufacturers National Golf Tournament, sponsored by Georgian Carpets, in aid of FIT and Macmillan Cancer Support, takes place this year at Kidderminster Golf Club on May 22nd and 23rd. The event, which last year raised £17,000 for the two charities, is the second largest fundraising event for FIT. Day One is a four ball team event while Day Two is a two ball team event. There is also a dinner at the Granary Hotel in Kidderminster in the evening of Tuesday 22nd May. Cost is £80 for both days or £50 for Tuesday and £35 for the Wednesday. The dinner is £30 per head.
Pictured from left to right are Rodney MacMahon, chairman, FIT, Peter Kimmins, general manager, Georgian Carpets, John Rayner of Macmillan, Rupert Anton and Trish Davies of Barclays Bank.
Shaun Lewis, Victoria Carpets Sales & Marketing Director has taken over from Rupert Anton as Chairman and he commented: “We are tremendously grateful to Georgian Carpets for their continued sponsorship and also to Adam, Victoria, Brintons and Brockway Carpets who are the backbone of the event. I know that both FIT and Macmillan are continually amazed at how much we raise for them, year after year. While the soft market conditions prevail, so does the generosity of our industry. It is quite staggering – and I hope it continues this year! The Furnishing Industry Trust is the only charity exclusively dedicated to helping those who are, or who have been, involved with the furnishing, carpet and allied industries, and who through no fault of their own find themselves facing unexpected or financial hardship. It is our industry charity. While we have our loyal supporters I would encourage, indeed urge, newcomers to join us. It is fun – and it is for a good cause.” For details on how to play in this year’s tournament, please contact Shaun Lewis on 01562 749 300 or shaun.lewis@victoriacarpets.com

Rebel victory at Victoria
Headlam on a high
The boardroom battle at Victoria Carpets ended with a ‘rebel’ victory at the company’s shareholder meeting on March 6 and chairman Nikki Beckett and fellow director Peter Jensen have resigned.
Headlam, one of Europe’s top flooring distributors, has recorded its highest level of sales last year with a like-for-like growth of 7.7% and profits up over 10% to £27.6m in the year ended 31 December 2011.
In their place, former director and founding family member Alexander Anton is back on the board along with two other new directors and Sir Bryan Nicolson takes over as chairman.
The company is credited with gaining market share from rivals as consumers switch to cost-conscious independent retailers - a move reflected in the multiple profit warnings from key competitor Carpetright.
The consortium that sort regime change at the top of Victoria secured 67% of the shareholders who voted after an acrimonious battle that has seen both sides engage in a war of words that centred on the recent performance of the company. The consortium said in a statement to shareholders before the vote: “The proposed new directors would like fresh impetus and thinking injected into the company and have provided a positive, straightforward and achievable strategy for the benefit of all shareholders.” During the skirmish, Victoria Carpets was even put up for sale by the previous board to give shareholders another option apart from the consortium’s proposal and the sale received “good offers” but this process was suspended shortly before the shareholder vote. Now Victoria will be keen to get back to business as usual – or better after a major distraction. Group MD Alan Bullock said: “Now we have to unite. The board has to focus on the business, work together and support the great brand of Victoria. “The key thing is to support the staff who continue to do a great job. We wait to hear what the new members of the board bring to the table,” he said.

Headlam chief executive Tony Brewer described it as “a very satisfactory achievement given the current trading environment” and added: “The first ten weeks of 2012 have continued a positive trend.” Turnover rose 6.4%, from £535.7m to £569.8 and the company reported that the number of active accounts had risen by 3%.
InterfaceFlor falters Carpet tile specialist InterfaceFlor is set to end manufacturing at its Yorkshire site with the potential loss of more than 100 jobs as production switches to the Netherlands and Northern Ireland. InterfaceFlor, which has owned the plant at Shelf, West Yorkshire, since the late 1970s, said the move was due to falling demand in the UK and aims to save about £4 million a year after the closure. The company’s HQ will survive on the site along with sales and marketing, design and development, and a sample making unit. Lindsey Parnell, European president and chief executive, said: “It is with regret that I must announce that InterfaceFlor is entering into consultation over ceasing manufacturing at Shelf. Our recent investment in state-ofthe-art production technology has considerably increased our capacity but unfortunately the market has not grown to the same degree."

Its purpose is to support and benefit flooring contractors, installers and retailers by adding value through the advancement of floor preparation, installation, finishing and maintenance skills Marking a significant investment, the 6,800ft2 comprehensive dedicated training and professional development facility is situated in Manchester, chosen for its central location to both the UK and Ireland and is the first of its kind among laminate and wood manufacturers. With 10 individual 12m2 training bays, the Quick-Step Academy presents a unique opportunity for floorlayers to experience the full range of daily challenges that are presented when installing wood and laminate flooring - including straight and winding stairs, fireplaces, corners, radiators, architraves and toilets to mention a few. Each training bay will walk attendees through every aspect of installation, from correct subfloor preparation through to installation, finishing and maintenance. There is also a specialist 20m2 sanding area to provide refinishing training for engineered and solid wood flooring. There are three courses available - Sanding and Finishing, Foundation level and Master Installer level. Darren Robinson, Quick-Step Academy training, learning and development manager, comments: “The Quick-Step Academy has been conceived to help grow businesses through the added benefits of becoming a Quick-Step Master Installer as well as helping to improve and enhance training within the floorcoverings sector. This really will provide installers with a state-ofthe-art and world-class facility to improve and refine their wood and laminate fitting skills. A cord for academy Heckmondwike’s Supacord carpet tiles have been used to create a series of attractive and highly practical floorcoverings for a newly refurbished academy in Northampton. Malcolm Arnold Academy features a number of large open-plan spaces, and a wide range of Supacord colours were used to define different sections of these spaces according to their intended purpose. “The brief for this project called for a carpet that was durable enough to withstand high volumes of foot traffic and survive in a demanding environment, but without losing its appearance,” comments Heckmondwike Area Manager, David Stephens. “The Supacord range was the perfect solution to this requirement.” As the experts in carpets for education, Heckmondwike has supplied its Supacord carpet to many hundreds of school and college projects over recent years. “Supacord’s tough, fibre bonded construction has been proven to deliver thoroughly reliable performance and people know that they can specify it with complete confidence, especially for this type of project,” adds David. This rugged construction also enables Supacord carpet to be cut on site, so that individual flooring designs can be created without any risk of the carpet fraying or unravelling. Together with the recently expanded range of Supacord colours this brought some particular advantages to Malcolm Arnold Academy. “The range provided plenty of scope to create different looks for different parts of the academy,” says Contracts Manager Carl Harper who managed the project. “Various colours and designs were also used to separate adjacent spaces from a visual point of view, such as a seating area next to a high-traffic walkway. This helped to define the purpose of the various spaces within the school and create a variety of interior environments.” With choices of 2m and 4m wide carpets, as well as a carpet tile option, Heckmondwike’s Supacord range is equally well suited to other types of application, including retail, office and accommodation projects. A new Supacord sample card has recently been produced to help architects, designers and contractors in the specification process. T 01924 406161 www.heckmondwike-fb.co.uk
South East success Designer Contracts – one of Britain’s largest floorcovering contractors to the new build industry – has added a new regional warehouse and office facility to its national network. The rapidly expanding company, which now has 11 regional offices throughout the UK, has signed a 10year lease on a 5,866 sq ft (545 sq m) unit at 953 Yeovil Road on Slough Trading Estate. Designer Contracts, which already has a regional base in Brentwood, Essex signalled its intention to expand further into the South East of England just months ago, and is still also pressing ahead with plans to add an additional facility in the Thames Medway area in the coming months. Said Designer Contracts’ managing director Peter Kelsey: “We are expanding our presence in the South East in response to a significant increase in demand in the area, and in particular on our established facility in Brentwood, Essex. “Our new location enables us to provide an even more dedicated level of service to our existing clients while increasing our market share in a major geographical area.” Slough Trading Estate is located right on the door step of the national motorway network to London and the South East, the South West, the Midlands and beyond. Designer Contracts employs over 140 people. In addition to floorcoverings, the company also offers furniture, lighting, curtain and blind packages to new homes developers.
