Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED
WOVEN
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.
Level loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.
CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.
Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.
Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.
Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours. Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the
BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves.

Regular Maintenance Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur. Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers! Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet. Use only WOOLSAFE approved products WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.
The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.
Periodic Cleaning When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company. If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE approved products. Look for the WOOLSAFE Mark on the bottle or package. It is best to engage the services of a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning company. To get a really expert job done entrust the work to a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. These companies are fully trained, have been in business for a considerable length of time, are members of one or more recognised professional trade associations related to the cleaning industry and have a reputation for top quality service. And they use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents on your wool carpets and rugs!
If you have a problem with a carpet or rug that requires an independent inspector, a network of carpet complaint investigators, trained and registered by The WOOLSAFE Organisation is available throughout the UK and Ireland. WOOLSAFE Registered Inspectors have extensive experience in investigating the causes for carpet complaints based on their practical involvement with carpets and rugs over many years. They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers, retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can carry out or commission tests where required, and will provide comprehensive reports. To contact an inspector in your area call 01943 462127, email: inspector@woolsafe.org, or visit: www.woolsafe.org / Private Householder / Registered Inspectors

Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Increase sales
• ‘Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support
Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with point-of-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Access professional services

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.floorwise.co.uk
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre THE BEST CARPET WOOL Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home. THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years. Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
SAFE
DURABLE
Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer. Safety Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly. Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites. Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING
SPROUTING
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
SAMPLES The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.
SHEDDING The original carpet tile
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
PULLED LOOPS
This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.
12
• shedding • pulled loops
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
SHADING
STATIC Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.
FADING ON WOOL Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

PILE REVERSAL
FLATTENING
(SEE SHADING)
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
INDENTATIONS When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
SOILING Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or
any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave
sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

RUMINATIONS FROM RALPH... The old boys at Rackhams who’ve been around forever keep harking back to some distant ‘glory years’ when life was free and easy and pattern books were plentiful, and in the same sentence the name Rackcord always comes up. It seems there was this mystical cord, that sold and sold, never gave any trouble, and the punters just kept coming back for more! Well, with tears in their eyes, they tell me it’s back! Unlike most of us, who get thicker with age, this one is thinner than the original, but the price is pure 70’s and the colours are great! There’s even a snow white for the wedding dance floor they tell me! And all for under £2 a square metre! Shocking!!!

WE’RE IN OUR NEW HOME! As many of you will now know, we have just moved into our new premises, which is very exciting. After 26 years we’ve left our cosy but increasingly cramped four storey facilities in a Victorian former bank in the middle of Elland, for much more modern, spacious, purpose-built premises on the outskirts of town. Our new home gives us a full 50% more space than before - now across just two floors - plus (and the staff are particularly excited about this!) plenty of parking. On the ground floor we’ll have a proper sampling department; upstairs will be the offices and a brand new showroom (which will be fully operational later in the year). Naturally, the carpeting will be a real showcase for our talents! Look out for photos and more details in the next issue.
PULLING OUT THE STOPS AT HARROGATE We will be in our usual ‘spot’ in Hall C at Harrogate, with a brand new stand reflecting the company’s new corporate identity. As always there will be plenty of new concepts to share and get your feedback on, as well as a proper chance to see this year’s successful introductions, including the 50-50 wool/polypropylene trio, striped Highbury, Hampton Court and Islington, the silky smooth 6.6 polyamide Amoré and the contract collections Gloss and Balmoral. Why not join us for a drink and a little musical entertainment from our sales director Robert Mulder (who plays in a blues band in his spare time!) from 4-6pm on the Sunday afternoon. Plus enter our free prize draw to win an i-Pad.

An innovative flooring solution featuring two coordinating carpet tile combinations, Mountain Plains and Trail Blazer, GO2 delivers a stylish look for specifiers, contractors and fitters. Cutting contract costs Budget is often the biggest limiting factor for contractors and specifiers working on commercial projects, but with the revolutionary TacFast flooring installation system, cost concerns can be a thing of the past. A revolutionary mechanical fix system that sits above the subfloor, TacFast is a simple, speedy and cost-friendly way of fitting floors. Featuring a unique interlocking disc and plate system that sits above the subfloor and a hook and loop fastening system that rapidly attaches the floorcovering, TacFast acts as a leveller and often eliminates the need for expensive and extensive subfloor preparation. What’s more, this innovative system does not require adhesives with lengthy drying times, saving both time and money. The TacFast system also acts as a DPM, eradicating any expensive maintenance costs potentially caused by damp. The essential ingredient of TacFast, the polypropylene LocPlate plates work as a water barrier to prevent any moisture migrating through the subfloor from affecting the floorcovering. In fact, any moisture will condense between the concrete surface of the subfloor and the LocPlate layer. Suitable for a whole host of floorcoverings, including wood and laminate planks, carpet tiles, ceramics, natural stone and LVT, the TacFast system is ideal for largescale projects that require multi-floor installation. Another major cost-saving benefit of TacFast is that flooring can be easily and quickly removed or replaced – great for refurbishments or even multi-location businesses. “It is clear that the TacFast system does not just offer a quick and easy flooring installation solution, but it delivers exceptional cost-cutting benefits too,’ explains Jonathan Stone, CCO, TacFast Systems International. “TacFast really is an all-inone method, removing the need for costly subfloor preparation, DPMs, levellers and adhesives. Furthermore, the speed with which the system works can also contribute to reducing labour costs. Perfect for time-sensitive and budget-driven projects, TacFast is the obvious floor fitting choice.” T 01527 919891

The British Wool column British Wool at the Harrogate Floor Show – ask the experts Now in its 50th year, the Flooring Show at Harrogate (2nd to 4th September) remains a popular meeting place for our UK carpet industry. Hotly disputed in terms of it centrality for Southern retailers over recent years, there are many leading manufacturers and retailers too that like the ambience of Harrogate with its Spa town elegance and upmarket social venues. The British Wool Marketing Board is of course a Yorkshire based organisation with its largest wool depot based only twenty miles away and so will be there to support the industry once again. The BWMB team’s expertise in wool and wool carpets will be available to all that visit the stand and all retailers are invited to stop and chat to our resident wool experts Richard Poole and Tim Booth. Between them they have over 50 years of experience in the wool industry – a nice number for the Harrogate Show this year - and have extensive knowledge on wool from raw fibre through processing in to finished product. Having worked together for many years – even before their life at the BWMB - they can discuss everything from raw fibre to the difference in over 60 different British breeds of sheep to highly technical questions on how and why certain wools will work in different products and the look of it when spun and manufactured in different ways.
New ‘wool’ point of sale on display The BWMB will also show some new point of sale material on behalf of the Campaign for Wool and the Carpet Foundation which is available to all retailers. “The Campaign for Wool continues to go from strength to strength with continued support from the Board and HRH The Prince of Wales,” says Ian Hartley, CEO of the Board and Executive Director of the Campaign for Wool. “The eye-catching point of sale material will attract attention and create a talking point in-store for consumers.”
On a carpet level, they have worked with the UK carpet sector continuously and can advise on all aspects of the product. Unsurprisingly, they have an address book that is like the ‘Who’s Who of the Wool Industry’ – an interesting publication – someone may one day write!!
“The Flooring Show is a great opportunity to meet a wide range of manufacturers and retailers,” says new head of marketing Tony Oakland-Smith, “Even in these tough economic times there is still a great deal of interest in producing British wool products.”
So please do call by and chat to our talented team – we look forward to seeing you there!
British Wool will be exhibiting on the British Pavilion stand B22a.
Royalty, textiles and charity – a perfect trio again!

The Queen’s Jubilee has raised the profile of the Fashion and Textile Children’s Trust (FTCT) – the amazing charity for our very own industry. The FTCT is fortunate to have the Queen as Patron as it brought them to the attention of Natuzzi – a high-end furniture manufacturer who has forged a partnership with knitwear designer Melanie Porter to create a stunning bespoke Union Jack designer sofa set – two seater sofa and two chairs – all in wool. Natuzzi wanted to celebrate the Jubilee in a charitable way and the FTCT has all the right credentials. Established in 1853, FTCT is a unique children’s charity which offers financial support to the children of those working in all aspect of the UK fashion and textile industry, including interior textiles and soft furnishings. Anna Pangbourne, Director, FTCT said: ‘FTCT is a charity which is at the heart of this industry, and it is the fact that we are able to provide financial support to children of those working in any aspect of the UK fashion and textiles which makes us unique.” “It is wonderful to see how industry can create wonderful opportunities that work for the business and a charity – particularly one that benefits our own industry,” Bridgette Kelly of the Campaign for Wool commented.

retailers respond to industry issues
Underlay under-valued? Underlay can be the un-sung hero of your bottom line as one of the few opportunities for retailers to grow business when carpet sales are flat. How resistant are consumers to paying more to replace their underlay? Is underlay over-priced or have the recent budget ranges made it more saleable? But do you have the products you need to appeal to consumers? Are all the extra products from underlay helping you to sell more – or is it just confusing the market? How important are point-ofsale systems to demonstrate the benefits of underlay underfoot? And where do you stand on PU versus rubber – does your preference match the consumer’s choice? Some like it hot! Cormar Carpets’ fresh approach to staying ahead “We bake them fresh every day,” jokes Cormar Carpets’ Marketing Director, David Cormack as another fine tufted carpet emerges hot from the curing oven of the backing plant. The modern manufacturing operation at the company’s mills near Manchester is indeed more akin to state-of-the-art food technology - it’s fast, it’s fresh, it’s consistent - and they’re focused on service and distribution. “We can’t afford not to,” says David. “We don’t compete on price. We have a very strong value offer but our competitive advantage is service. Our customers know we’ll deliver and we don’t let them down.” The real secret to the affordability of this success is that the same investment and innovation that has created class-leading service has also reduced costs. “This is fundamental to why it works,” says David. “We have driven out costs and we have developed a real partnership with our people across the operation to improve efficiency and integration. Now we have a great team who understand the business, know what our customers need and they can make a real difference to our performance.” Putting their money where their mouth is, last year, employees at both the company’s two mills in Bury were enrolled on a scheme to gain NVQ credits in Business Improvement Techniques. Cormar is one of a very small handful of carpet companies who can fly the flag knowing their products are 100% British-made It also puts bread on the table! Today’s £80m annual turnover is almost twice that of ten years ago. Set up in 1956 by Neville Cormack, Cormar is a robust, profitable business which is managing the recession well but the recipe for that success has been honed to perfection – the principal ingredients are innovation and commitment. Cormar is well known for winning almost every award from buying groups and retailers for exemplary service to their customers over the past decade. But being the best doesn’t come cheap and as the economy tanked in 2008, some in the industry wondered if Cormar could afford to maintain their uncompromising commitment to service.
Investment is a long-term play and Cormar has stayed at the top of its game since replacing all it’s tufting machinery 15 years ago, with modern ‘super speed’ tufting machines – a programme that lasted more than 10 years and accounts for 23 tufters, which operate day and night. Most recently, the company has been concentrating on its delivery network. “Increasingly we see ourselves just as much as a distribution business and are focusing on this more than ever before,” says David. “We don’t just benchmark our performance against the carpet industry but also measure ourselves up against leading service providers in other industries, who know all about meeting customer expectations.” So when Cormar concentrates on something, things happen fast. Major recent investments include an advanced logistics systems, another five new vehicles for its truck fleet of 49 vehicles this

“We don’t just benchmark our performance against the carpet industry but also measure ourselves up against leading service providers” direct if they prefer to – especially when our offices are closed in the evenings and at weekends.” Since the trade portal went live in October, 2011, Cormar has received over 10,000 orders via the web portal and some £5.5m of business has been traded through the system.
This high-tech £350k investment in 5m cutting capability has just been commissioned to improve service Autumn and £350,000 spend on a high-tech 5-metre cutting machine earlier this year. Orders taken up to 4.00pm on a weekday start loading at 5.30pm and, typically, some 1,500 daily consignments are sent out overnight to nationwide distribution hubs. Local networks then aim to deliver within 48 hours of the first order and retailers can request a no-cost next-day collection service for urgent jobs directly from a local collection point. Linked to this investment is the new trade sales portal, a web-based system launched last year which gives retailers direct access to the Cormar process. They can check online what is in stock, place orders, view their account statements, check prices and proof of delivery signatures as well as being able to look at the full product spec’s. And later in the summer an option for buying group members to view ranges under their own brand names, will be launched. “Customers can see what is going on and it makes every aspect of our operation more visible,” says David. “The system means our people can talk to retailers with authority and confidence or our customers can go in
Fresh new products just keep rolling out. The newly launched luxury heavyweight Sensation is sure to live up to its name with consumers And behind all this, Cormar continues to create great new carpets that the market wants. One of the very few UK manufacturers who can legitimately fly the British flag on all their products, the company is very responsive to retailers’ needs. Once a 80/20 and all wool player, Cormar has recently added three competitive 50/50 twists to its collection – Glendale, Forest Hills and Living Naturals - and its launch into polypropylene with Primo Easy Clean has been followed up by entry-level Apollo and this year’s launch of the luxurious heavyweight Sensation. Another new product is planned to launch at Harrogate which the company expects to get a great reaction. It’s tough at the top. Market leadership creates intense pressure to out-perform on a daily, now even hourly, basis but Cormar has positioned itself to handle the pressure and produce the goods – delivered fresh every day to your door! Harrogate show preview
The flooring show powers ahead! “Step outside your business and see what is out there. The importance of networking and keeping abreast of change cannot be under-estimated.” David Cormack of Cormar
Flooring’s biggest event is all set for September as more than 110 leading companies from 10 countries get ready for The Flooring Show, Harrogate, with a programme that is brimming with new ideas. A new management team, backed by fresh investment and strong exhibitor commitment, are reinvigorating this year’s event. For the retail sector, an expanded seminar programme will focus on assisting flooring retailers to build their businesses in difficult times. For the commercial sector, a dedicated one day conference programme based on leading case studies will meet the CPD requirements of facilities managers, specifiers and installers.
Highlights The British Manufacturers’ Pavilion in Hall B will contain key industry names such as Brockway, Bronte, Cavalier and the British Wool Marketing Board, and the pavilion structure will allow visitors to compare what these players have to offer with ease. The seminar / conference programme for the retail / domestic sector has the theme: Increasing the profitability of your business in tough times and will directly address what actions small and medium-sized businesses can do to build business. The keynote address will be by ‘retail champion’ Clare Rayner with the theme: Enhancing your retail presence. Other seminars will cover buying groups, store presentation, business finance, the internet and apprenticeships.
Wendy Adams, Flooring Show Director, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that our core group of exhibitors has remained steadfastly loyal to the show and more than 90% of the available space is now firmly contracted. We’re also seeing a healthy level of firsttime exhibitors to the show, which is very encouraging.” As the only UK event exclusively dedicated to the flooring industry, it’s the one place and time when the whole sector gets together, making it the ideal opportunity for visitors to see their current suppliers, meet new ones, network, and learn about new products and launches The show’s organisers have considerably increased investment in the visitor promotional campaign including social media and as a result, pre-registration visitors are already well ahead of the numbers at the same stage last year.
Practical demonstrations will benefit installers. The UK’s first conference dedicated to commercial floor coverings will be hosted at the show with the theme Best practice, shared knowledge aimed at facilities managers, architects and specifiers, specialist installers. The programme will cover key market segments including healthcare; fitness & leisure; commercial office; retail & shopping; education; and hotel & restaurant.
A full programme of events and highlights will be published in our September issue due out in mid August.

“See what’s out there!” “Harrogate is all about the independent retail carpet trade,” says David Cormack of Cormar. “And whatever you say about business generally over recent years the independent sector still dominates the retail flooring trade. “But at Cormar we believe that retailers need to keep up to date to stay ahead. So it is important to step outside your business and see what is out there. There are opportunities to see new ranges first, find new suppliers or diversify into other flooring activities to boost store sales. Whether you are too busy or too quiet, the importance of networking and keeping abreast of change cannot be underestimated.” “As an exhibitor, we have no doubts about the benefits of being at Harrogate. We have exhibited there since the first exhibition in 1962. And over our 50 year history at the event, we believe the return on investment from the show is without question. Throughout those years we have been building a brand and, above all, building trust in our business and we think that face-toface, at the heart of the flooring industry in Harrogate is the place to do it.”
50th anniversary

“2012 marks the show’s 50th anniversary since its launch in 1962 as the Northern Floor Coverings Fair,” said Paul Stott, the event’s Marketing Director. “But what is most significant is the emphasis this year’s show will place on the way floor coverings influence other interior design decisions in the retail sector, and the increasingly specialist nature of floor coverings in the commercial sector. Our aim is to make this a ‘not to be missed’ event for both the retail and the commercial flooring industry.”

Waste not With more than 35 outlets in the UK accepting all types of waste carpet for re-use or recycling, retailers can make useful savings in disposal costs by diverting their fitting waste and uplifted old carpets from landfill, says Carpet Recycling UK. In Yorkshire and Lancashire, retailers have the opportunity to recycle their post-installation off-cuts. Returning to the Harrogate Flooring Show on Stand M32, the industry-backed association for recycling and reusing waste carpet will be raising awareness with retailers about the growing opportunities for recycling and the tangible benefits for their businesses. Extensive pilot trials involving sorting and collection of post-installation wastes are being evaluated by Carpet Recycling UK members to optimise the logistics cost and effectiveness of various methods. Visitors to the CRUK stand can find out more about waste carpet recycling trials in their area. CRUK will also be hosting a one-hour seminar at 2pm on Sunday September 2 with guest speakers sharing their waste carpet recycling experiences and highlighting innovative end uses for the material. “Landfill taxes are going only one way – and that’s up. Add on transport and tipping charges and the cost of sending waste carpet to landfill averages around £100 per tonne in the UK,” explains Laurance Bird, CRUK Director. “There is growing demand for clean post-installation off-cuts that can be recycled into higher value end uses, such as mattress pads, carpet underlay and insulation products. Recycling waste carpet is not only the right thing to do and something that consumers want to see happen, it makes sound financial sense too.” Hall M Stand 32 • T 0161 440 8325 www.carpetrecyclinguk.com.

by Dennis Flower Nostalgic charm with urban sophistication from Tarkett
Tarkett is another prominent supplier of vinyl flooring designs and states that its Echiquier Black White, from the company’s Homestyle collection, has proven to be one of its most popular designs. The collection has been designed with the typical Edwardian black and white floors in mind, Tarkett explains, and Echiquier Black White mixes nostalgic charm with an urban sophistication. The Echiquier Black White vinyl is priced from £15 per sq m, the company concludes. Moduleo is another supplier that states its non-wood effects, such as stone, slate and ceramic, are continuing to grow in popularity. Attention to detail and rugged durability provides the authenticity of natural stone flooring without the drawbacks, it says. Hardwearing qualities means that these can be installed in kitchens and bathrooms, as its luxury vinyl tile (LVT) collections also provide warmth and durability. The company further explains that its wipe-clean Protectonite PU top layer provides a natural look and effect. The textured layer follows the pattern of the tile underneath, providing an authentic finish. Karndean Designflooring has noticed that in addition to wood, stone and ceramic vinyl designs are proving popular. While the real thing can be costly, it states that luxury design vinyl flooring is swift to install and easy to maintain, which ticks all the boxes for most commercial jobs. The company states that this is further endorsed through qualities such as versatility, durability and resilience. It offers a variety of tones, finishes and plank or tile size so that every specification need is met and every conceivable interior scheme can be achieved, says Karndean Designflooring.
throughout, makes Mipolam Symbioz lighter and more flexible than standard product, says Gerflor. Colours range from blue night to black diamond and linen to sandstone. Containing over 75% sustainable raw materials, such as wheat or corn, all waste is recycled into new product and Mipolam Symbioz is 100% recyclable, Gerflor states. Polyflor, the UK’s largest manufacturer of commercial and residential vinyl flooring, offers a wide range of solutions, from homogenous and heterogeneous to safety and acoustic floorcoverings. The company’s Camaro Flooring Collection is proving popular, it states, featuring 30 authentic, creative and practical wood and stone effect surfaces, these luxury vinyl tiles are able to transform any space in the home.
Stone and fantasy designs have been introduced by Windmöller Flooring into its collections of LVT. The Laguna collection now includes six stones designs with a top layer of 0.3mm, designed for domestic use. Further to this, the Bacana collection, with a top layer of 0.55 mm and suitable for commercial use, now includes 10 stone and fantasy designs in tiles of 914 x 473mm format. From trendy white designs, such as Antartica and Iceland, to metallic options including Heavy Metal, Silver Fiber and Manhattan Design, the company is increasing its alternatives to wood. Moduleo combines rugged durability and attention to detail
Polyflor recently launched the Colonia Flooring Collection, an affordable and design-led luxury vinyl tile range designed for the housing sector. The range reflects the undoubted natural beauty of wood and stone with a creative range of authentic products, the company states. Cutting edge technology is at the forefront of its manufacturing and design, says Polyflor, describing the recentlylaunched Polysafe Modena PUR range as revolutionary in its design, incorporating minute aluminium oxide particles so the floor retains its safety features whilst remaining aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Loss and leaders Half of all companies in the UK Floor Coverings industry is making a loss as economic conditions continue to take their toll according to an industry study. The report from the Plimsoll research group reveals how many of these 461 loss making companies have simply had an isolated bad year and how many are burying their heads in the sand. David Pattison, author of a new market report into company performance in the market says, “More and more companies are making a loss for the first time in their history. Many can rightly claim to be victims of difficult trading conditions. A quick refocus on profitability would ensure this an isolated occurrence” However, overall conditions are no excuse for a band of serial loss makers in the market. Pattison explains, “282 companies are making a loss for the second, even third year running and are simply selling at prices their business cannot sustain. They have put off making the painful decision that more prudent companies made a while ago. No one wants to trim costs, lay off staff, cancel dividend payments and the like but carrying on regardless is now unviable. They can no longer bury their heads in the sand”. “I congratulate management teams that have made the often difficult and unpopular decisions. They have cut their cloth according to the market conditions and are more stable for it. Those failing to do so are running out of time and cash. Without a big increase in demand they cannot support their pricing strategy much longer. Watch out for a number of failures among the companies we have identified”. The new Plimsoll Analysis – Floor Coverings provides an intimate assessment of 1000 companies in the market. It will tell you instantly which companies are pursuing a reckless strategy and who is getting it right. Victoria predicts growth
Refreshing Heckmondwike
Victoria Carpets has unveiled an increase in UK sales during the last financial year while profits have been under pressure but the company predicts future growth,
Heckmondwike has launched a new brochure and series of sample cards to showcase its extensive range of contract carpets and tiles.
The Kidderminster-based company said the 15.4 per cent rise for the year ended March 31, 2012, was buoyed by strong growth in sales to the John Lewis Partnership and a new programme of carpet ranges introduced last year. Company bosses also announced Group revenue had risen by 9.4 per cent to £77.13 million and operating profit by 6.8 per cent to £2.58 million during the “demanding” period. Pre-tax profit, however, slid 19.6 per cent to £1.55 million and the Group’s Australia sales increased by only 1.5 per cent Victoria said the figure was impacted by “weakening market and consumer sentiment”. In a reference partly to the bitter boardroom battle that engulfed Victoria during the period, group managing director, Alan Bullock, said: “The past year has been a demanding time for our business and I have been proud of the adaptability and energy shown by the employees.” He warned, however, Victoria expected the consumer environment to “remain challenging” but added, “we have already demonstrated we can achieve good progress in these conditions.” Chairman Katherine Innes Ker said: “As this year progresses, the benefits of investment in new products, together with the improvements in working capital and cost reductions should result in stronger sales and profit growth.”
AFS forced to close Long-established South East AFS have called in the receiver after mounting debts force the company to cease trading last month. AFS had expanded their presence in the marketplace and were major stockists for Cormar ranges and Interfloor products.
The move follows a redesign of the company’s website and is part of a wider refresh of Heckmondwike’s communication channels. Combining sleek new visuals with contemporary design, Heckmondwike’s updated print and online presence underlines the company’s position as the UK’s established specialist fibre bonded carpet manufacturer. “We wanted to make it easier for our customers and specifiers to find the information they require – whether that is specific product details or project inspiration,” commented Abby Chandler, Marketing Manager at Heckmondwike. “The new brochure has been designed as a handy reference guide, while the new sample cards provide the perfect tactile showcase for our products.” Presented in a concise and visually appealing format, the brochure features all of Heckmondwike’s main products, including the bestselling Supacord and Broadrib fibre bonded carpets, which are widely specified throughout the education and commercial sectors. Having recently been updated with several new colourways, both of these ranges deliver high quality and cost-effective performance, as well as contemporary good looks. The brochure also highlights Heckmondwike’s Creative Range, which feature striking patterns that work extremely well when installed in large spaces, and offer a wide variety of design possibilities. Taking centre stage is Array, the latest carpet tile to be added to this collection, which features a smart new take on the popular linear design trend. Also covered in the brochure is Heckmondwike’s range of entrance area carpets, perfect for the most heavily used flooring zones, as well as the company’s bespoke design service, which offers the opportunity to personalise the flooring with unique logos or motifs. Boasting larger sized samples than the previous versions, the new sample cards are the ideal hands-on specification tool for architects, designers, contractors and end-users, as they clearly demonstrate the high-quality and robust construction of the Heckmondwike product ranges, as well as the wide variety of patterns and colourways available. 1,000 tonne up Recofloor has won a prestigious Business Commitment to Environment Award for its innovative and sustainable approach to the collection and recycling of waste vinyl flooring. The award win coincides with the scheme having recycled its 1,000th tonne – an important milestone in its three-year history. Jane Gardner, Recofloor’s Project Manager, collected the Process Premier Award trophy from Sir John Armitt, chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority, at the 2012 BCE Environmental Leadership Awards in London. Founded by Sir Peter Parker in 1975, the BCE Awards scheme is one of the world’s longest- running environmental competitions. Recofloor is the UK’s first joint industry-led vinyl flooring recycling scheme, which was founded in 2009 by UK flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor. This unique example of two major competitors working collaboratively to promote sustainability of their products is a major achievement – and an important step for the flooring sector as a whole. Commenting on the win, Jane, of Axion Consulting which manages the scheme, said: “Recofloor’s success has been very much a team effort involving Axion, Altro, Polyflor and indeed the entire flooring sector supply chain. “We are absolutely delighted to win this award, which recognises our tremendous achievements in diverting ever-increasing quantities of flooring waste from landfill and puts this material to good new uses. To date, we have recycled some 1,000 tonnes – of which 190 tonnes are in this year alone, and this figure is rising by one tonne per day.” Vinyl flooring waste can be recycled back into new flooring products as well as traffic management equipment, such as cones and sign bases. Ode to old times To any that have been involved in carpet manufacturing, this picture of ‘F Mill at Dean Clough’ - the home of Crossley Carpet Works, Halifax brings stark recognition of our heritage entwined in the hills and valleys of Pennine England writes Syd Merryfield, of Merryfield Carpet Cutting Machines. When you realise that the picture is only half of F Mill which was once surrounded by A to H Mills, Axminster, Gripper and Elizabeth Sheds, the magnitude of the largest carpet mill in Great Britain emerges from our dark and smoky industrial northern heritage.
“Standing dank no more, the mills of wool”
Many historians have written about the phenomena of the place we called ‘cluff ’ that housed looms and people for generations, bringing wealth to the Halifax area. Little is left of this manufacturing giant and what is can be summed up in four verses of tribute to this fallen giant.
Standing dank no more the mills of wool With shuttle weave and warp No smoke now bellows in the skies Manufacturing lessons we were taught World’s finest carpets did emit From looms that never stopped Processed pure from sheep to floor A quality that no one topped So now the mills take others ways Cleaned and spruced pristine No recognition of their past Not a single warp is seen Theatres, hotels and office space Reborn on oil soaked floors No noise of looms, driven belted wheels Behind those long closed doors T 01422 373799 www.carpetcuttingmachines.co.uk

Obituary: Jim Young Jim Young was very influential during the 70s and 80s in the development of carpet accessories, writes Bob Lawton, formerly of Ball & Young. I first became involved with Jim at Gripperrods in 1973 where he was MD and I was a young representative. Jim was an accountant by profession, but, he had an eye for sales and customer service and under his influence Gripperrods became Europe's biggest and most successful carpet accessory company of that time. In 1983 he founded Ball & Young in Corby. I was lucky enough to join Jim and Martin Ball as Sales Manager. Over the next few years we grew the sales team to become one of the largest rubber underlay manufacturers. Jim kept his hand on the tiller and the company always remained successful and profitable. !n 1989 British Vita bought Ball & Young and Jim stayed on for two years as a consultant. Although he wasn't involved in the development of polyurethane underlays, he was one of the few who considered it the future of UK underlay. A few years after he finally retired Cloud 9 was launched, and the rest is history. He still had an eye for success! In the last few years of his life Jim moved into an apartment at Walton Heath Golf Club where he was able to indulge two of his hobbies, playing golf and tasting red wine. Jim was 86 and he leaves behind a daughter, two sons and a lot of friends.
