THE STOCKLISTS December 2012

Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED

WOVEN

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.

Level loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours. Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

Regular Maintenance Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur. Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers! Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet. Use only WOOLSAFE approved products WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.

The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.

Periodic Cleaning When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company. If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE approved products. Look for the WOOLSAFE Mark on the bottle or package. It is best to engage the services of a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning company. To get a really expert job done entrust the work to a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. These companies are fully trained, have been in business for a considerable length of time, are members of one or more recognised professional trade associations related to the cleaning industry and have a reputation for top quality service. And they use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents on your wool carpets and rugs!

If you have a problem with a carpet or rug that requires an independent inspector, a network of carpet complaint investigators, trained and registered by The WOOLSAFE Organisation is available throughout the UK and Ireland. WOOLSAFE Registered Inspectors have extensive experience in investigating the causes for carpet complaints based on their practical involvement with carpets and rugs over many years. They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers, retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can carry out or commission tests where required, and will provide comprehensive reports. Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Why join? Metro Group www.carpet1st.co.uk Contact: Jill Coward Tel: 01204 393539 jillcoward@carpet1st.co.uk

Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

www.smg-group.co.uk Contact: David Lewis Tel: 0118 932 3832 info@smg-group.co.uk

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Pick the right one • Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see what you would actually use

Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Increase sales

• ‘Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support

Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with point-of-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Access professional services

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

www.numa-online.co.uk

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will...

• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING

SPROUTING

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLES The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

SHEDDING The original carpet tile

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPS

This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.

10

• shedding • pulled loops

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

SHADING

STATIC Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOL Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

THE STOCKLISTS December 2012

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

PILE REVERSAL

FLATTENING

(SEE SHADING)

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONS When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

SOILING Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or

any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave

sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

THE STOCKLISTS December 2012

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre THE BEST CARPET WOOL Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home. THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years. Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

SAFE

DURABLE

Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer. Safety Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly. Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites. Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

SEASONS GREETINGS We’d like to wish all of our customers, colleagues – indeed, anyone that knows us – our sincerest best wishes for Christmas and the New Year. As we have done in previous years we are making a donation to our local hospice, Overgate, rather than sending out greetings cards.

PREPARING FOR DOMOTEX For us the New Year always starts off with a bang – otherwise known as Domotex, the big one for European carpet manufacturers. As usual the stand will be packed full of samples of both current ranges; new ones you might have seen prototypes of at Harrogate that have been further developed and are about to go into production; and even more prototypes of exciting new ideas. Just for starters, we’re particularly looking forward to the launch of Hammersmith – the bold new multi-stripe being added to the hugely successful 100% 3-ply wool Tube Collection; and, for the contract market, to Lima Stripe, a really eye-catching jazzy stripe Gelbac in our own 100% Edelon polypropylene. But there’s going to be lots more stylish, fabulous value new qualities to whet your appetites. If you’re coming to Hannover, don’t forget to drop in for a drink, Lesley and Robert would be delighted to see you: 12-15 January – Hall 5, stand C18.

Xpress revisited – isn’t it gorgeous!

Xpress in choc ice wide stripe

Move over!

This photo of Xpress in its wide-striped guise in what we aptly call Choc Ice colourway was taken in an apartment in Italy and we think it shows off the product so well we wanted to share it with you. Where else can you get a carpet that looks this good, is this hard wearing and yet so keenly priced. It’s a superb 100% wool 3 ply, twocoloured striped bouclé tufted carpet which comes in six contrasting two-tone stripe variations mixing dark and mid brown tones with cream – there are two broad stripes; three ‘thick and thin’ stripes; and one narrow stripe.

We are still getting post which has been sent to our old address – but we have now stopped the forwarding service so if you haven’t amended your records, we can’t guarantee we’ll get your missive or that you’ll get an answer from us. Think about the inconvenience of orders or even payments going missing! Please make sure you’ve told ALL your business departments about our new address.

Succeeding with sub-floors Fitters and contractors can avoid the time-consuming and expensive problems posed by poor-quality subfloors with the revolutionary TacFast mechanical fix system that provides a quick and cost-effective solution for fitting floors. “Floor preparation issues often crop up, especially if the subfloor is in poor condition, and the associated costs with restoring it to a workable level can often spiral out of control, especially for budget-conscious projects, explains Jonathan Stone, CCO, TacFast Systems International. “And of course subfloor preparation can be an extremely lengthy process too, wasting time that could be spent better elsewhere. But TacFast eradicates the need for extensive preparation, saving both time and money without compromising on crucial quality.” Indeed, the TacFast system, which consists of a unique LocPlate interlocking disc and plate structure that is placed above the subfloor, and a hook and loop fastener that rapidly attaches the floorcovering, acts as a DPM and leveller. Acting as a water barrier to prevent moisture migration, the LocPlate layer can easily go over any cracks or gap and expansion joints to allow fitters to complete floor installations quickly and accurately, and with no possibility of damp later on. Requiring no adhesives, TacFast eradicates any lengthy drying times or unpleasant fumes, and critically it works with almost all types of floorcoverings, including wood and laminate planks, carpet tiles, ceramics, natural stone and LVT. “The TacFast system really is a one-stop solution when it comes to fitting floors,” continues Jonathan Stone. “Delivering real savings in terms of both time and cost, TacFast is quickly becoming the go-to installation method for a whole variety of flooring types. It’s incredibly easy to use and promises fast, highquality results.” T 01527 919891 www.tacfast.com

Select, the best Specialist flooring and interiors PR and Marketing agency Select First is celebrating in style after its clients scooped both top awards in the Best Flooring category at the House Beautiful awards 2012. With a reputation for gaining great exposure for clients in both business-to-business and business-to-consumer media, Select First pulled out all the stops to secure both gold and silver in one category at the awards ceremony held in London’s Science Museum. The annual event, organised by leading consumer magazine House Beautiful, recognises excellence and innovation in design. Comprising 26 hotly contested categories, the awards draw huge interest from leading brands in the interiors and home industry, all eager to have their newest launches acknowledged as the best in class.

Fighting off stiff competition from some of the industry’s biggest names, Quick-Step won gold for its elegant new range of extra wide laminate planks, with Avenue Floors coming in a close second to claim the silver for its colourful Bubblegum & Liquorice collection of cushion flooring.

“Having two of our clients win both possible awards in the flooring category is testament to our commitment to the flooring and wider interiors industries,” comments Myles Hazebroek, managing director, Select First. “It’s a great way for us to celebrate as 2012 draws to a close, and we have our eyes set firmly on more prizes at next year’s ceremony.” T 08450 943349

Sweet success for Avenue Victoria ‘annus horribilis’ The end of a turbulent year for Victoria Carpets has been marked with the departure of long-standing MD Alan Bullock and a downbeat forecast from the new board of directors. Mr Bullock elected to retire with immediate effect in November after 40 years at the head of the Kidderminster-based business - a move that will not have surprised many following his ousting from the firm’s board in September after a year of acrimony and replacements among the company’s directors. A statement from Victoria thanked Mr Bullock for “his loyal and dedicated service over the last 40 years. During his tenure, Alan has been a key player securing the company's long-standing relationships with key brands including John Lewis, Hilton International and the UK's Independent Retail Buying Groups.” Mr Bullock, who joined the business in 1972 and became MD in 1995, said: "I am retiring from a company that has a brand that I admire - the team I help recruited over the years have the skills and knowledge to continue to keep Victoria as a leading brand name within an industry which over the years has seen many changes.” The last year has seen some of the most dramatic changes as a ‘rebel’ consortium headed by Alexander Anton wrenched control of the business away from its former directors following a roller-coaster of shareholder votes and angry statements on all sides. Now, in the first trading update released by the new board, the company said a full review of prospects was underway and commented: “It is already apparent the company is likely to break even at best for the full year ending April 4, 2013. Current trading, in both Australia and the UK, remains weak and significantly behind budget. The directors wish to assure shareholders they are doing all they can to remedy the situation.”

Avenue Floors’ exciting, design-led range of cushion flooring scooped the silver award in the Best Flooring category at the esteemed House Beautiful awards 2012 in London on the 8th November. Winning the second to top prize for its eyecatching Bubblegum & Liquorice collection, Avenue was highly commended by the House Beautiful award judges for offering something different than other, more staid, cushion flooring ranges.

“Receiving the silver award is a great compliment to us and our team of designers,” confirms Francis Debrabandere, commercial director, IVC Group. “Bubblegum & Licquorice consists of a whole variety of fun, bright flooring styles that have been designed to inject vibrancy into interior spaces, and it’s brilliant that House Beautiful recognise our collection as one of the very best in the flooring industry today.” Judged by a panel of industry insiders and design experts, including Tommy Walsh and Mary Berry, the Best Flooring category included some of the biggest names in the floorcoverings trade, and Avenue beat off some very stiff competition to win a place on the podium. Consisting of bold stripes, contemporary dots, nature-inspired pebbles and striking swirls, the Bubblegum & Liquorice collection has something to suit every taste. Offering great style as well as superb durability, the range is practical and very easy to maintain, making it a great choice for busy households. Priced competitively too, this range proves that on-trend flooring need not cost the earth. Held at London’s prestigious Science Museum, the House Beautiful awards evening was certainly a night to remember for Avenue Floors. T 00 32 5665 3211

Survey

Show biz

40% said Harrogate was better than last year

Go or no-go - are trade events helping you do better business?

55% want more manufacturers exhibiting

Retailers rate trade shows, says our survey, but reluctance to leave the store in tough trading times is holding back the role of events in the flooring sector. Harrogate triumphed against the odds to maintain its audience levels in 2012 and a key response from our readers was how upbeat the occasion was. But organisers had to re-double their efforts to innovate and inspire in order to encourage both exhibitors and visitors to make the investment. We asked our retail panel why they go - and why they stay away from the flooring market’s only dedicated event. The biggest reason not to attend - cited by more than 30% of respondents - was that they could not afford time away from the store. A regular attendee who stayed away this year said: “Until there is a general improvement in trade retailers fighting to survive will not leave their stores for 2 or 3 days to go to a trade show.” A supplier in the sector commented: “At the bottom of each business cycle businesses tend to rationalise and cut back on all non essential costs so their business models are as lean as they can be. This is where I think we are, things should move forward in 2013 and should get better.” Geography plays an important part in retailers decision to attend and 28% said Harrogate was too far away from them and Southern people said the Midlands would be a better bet. “Harrogate. It is too far. I am happy to go to Birmingham as I can do the show in a day and one day away won't harm my business,” said a West Country retailer. 88% of respondents said they would probably or definitely attend a show if it was nearer to them. But a North East flooring person summed up the sentiment of many: “Maybe I'm a sad individual, but Harrogate is one of the highlights of my year. A chance to see what's new and meet some old friends. Some associates from Tyneside and Teesside say it's not worth the journey; I beg to differ.” Seeing new products came top of the list of motivations to visit with 37% support followed by 32% who felt that meeting suppliers direct was all important. Strangely, attendees put the social side bottom of this list while among those who did not attend, the largest proportion (32%) said the camaraderie was the thing they missed the most. The creative retail displays and Clare Rayner’s seminar on retailer presentation was commented on as highlights. The non-attendees were asked what else might tempt them to visit and a large majority, 55%, said more manufacturers exhibiting was the most important issue.

64% claimed there was not much new 30% can’t leave their store for the show 88% would attend a show if it was nearer to them The Stocklists polled 1047 retailers throughout the UK during November 2012 . Replies and comments are recorded anonymously. Many thanks to all those who took part.

But the efforts and new ideas of organisers this year were not wasted on their audience. While 39% said the event was as good as last year, 40% said it was better and only a small contingent of around 20% were less satisfied. Those are good results for the event against a backdrop where 64% of our sample said there was ‘not much new’ from suppliers. 58% said they were certainly reckoning to attend again next year and many more were likely. The positive attitude at Harrogate was remarked upon by many. “Reports of the flooring trade’s demise have been somewhat exaggerated,” said one retailer. “I was impressed how upbeat everyone was,” said another. Another was: “It seemed to be a more positive event. With the efforts leading up to it and the extra marketing, the organisers did their level best, but the flooring sector is too pre-occupied with beating each other up on price and reducing margins at the moment!” The jury remains out on trade shows to some extent - many remain supportive, others called Harrogate a ‘relic’ and ‘old and over’ and some suggested that virtual trade shows on screen made more sense in the modern market. The phrase that came up many times in reader responses was “use it or lose it” - the future, especially the economic future, will decide which!

The British Wool column Biggest exhibition for wool – Wool House

Somerset House is the venue hosting Wool House in March 2013. The wool industry is set to see the biggest ever celebration of wool held in one place as the Campaign for Wool launches Wool House in March 2013. The Campaign, whose Patron is HRH The Prince of Wales, is funded by the British Wool Marketing Board and other wool organisations across the world including those in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, South America, Norway and the USA. Wool House will be hosted in the West Wing of Somerset House which is situated in central London next to the Thames and will feature a showcase of interiors, fashion and the world of artisan and craft making along with a hi-tech educational suite. “It is the most expansive venture the Campaign has seen to date as it looks at all key global uses of wool and shows the amazing versatility of the fibre and its potential to be both stunningly beautiful in use and yet incredibly practical too,” said Bridgette Kelly, the Campaign for Wool’s project director. The Campaign has appointed Arabella McNie as the curator; she has over twenty years’ experience of working as a stylist and designer in the world of interiors and also has strong links in men’s tailoring too. “I am determined to show the wool as a modern fibre and consumers will see far more than traditional checks. There are some amazing fabrics and flooring and visitors will see some stunning room sets which will really show the difference that wool can make,” said Arabella said.

Adam Carpets Adam Carpets are well known for their high quality British Wool ranges and the 80/20 range ‘Castlemead Twist’, with over 60 shades available is a perfect example. It is a truly excellent range for colour choice and is renowned in the trade for its long lasting durability.

‘Marquette Plaid’ in British Wool – a true statement carpet. However, there is far more than standard Twist available from this well established Kidderminster manufacturer, they are introducing new product that challenges the boring beige inertia that continues to grip the carpet world. There are some striking stripes, and very modern patterns emerging from them and it is very good to see a little bit of innovation going on. At this time of year, it would be nice to see the bold seasonal plaids they offer – ‘Marquette Plaid’ is a fabulous statement carpet. The graphic is on the diagonal, which gives it a very modern edge. But for something more mellow; the subtle, classy design of ‘Catherine’ really stands out and is truly a beautiful carpet. “Catherine is an exquisite overtuft, that allows consumers 'woven quality, tufted price'. The quality of yarn going into this range is the equal of any going into woven products. Our ability to 'overtuft' a pattern on top of a plain carpet has been a growth area for us this year,” Eamonn Prescott of Adam Carpets comments.

The exhibition has invited six leading interior designers to offer their vision for a room and wool will see how the design community use the fibre extensively within their work. A series of wool-led designer talks and interactive workshops will also be held, Wool House – world-wide-wool - will be open to the public from Wednesday 13 March to Sunday 24 March 2013 and entry is free.

Christmas Good Wishes As yet another year bids its goodbye; the reality of another tough trading annum is a sobering thought. Most of us in the carpet and flooring industry are aware that the coming months will continue to see the impact of our economic downturn on business. There are mixed views always on this front but as the New Year approaches, the BWMB team sincerely hope that the outlook for all is one of improvement and wish you peace at Christmas and good health and prosperity in 2013.

Flower on Flooring News News Keeping IT focused Technological advancements are providing increasing opportunity for flooring retailers and professionals to raise service and sales levels. The development of both hardware and software continues to surge forward, providing those with the aptitude to embrace these with the means to offer more options to customers in the areas of sales and customer service. David Cormack, Cormar Carpets marketing director, explains the benefits of his company’s trade website: “It offers carpet retailers and contractors the opportunity to trade with us online and bring accurate, real time information to their finger-tips.” The portal has generated more than 15,000 orders and over £7.5m of business from retailers since it went live in September 2011, he states. The trade website offers a range of interactive services including stock check, delivery days, online ordering, price checks, online statements and proof of delivery, order tracking and order history - all through a secure personal log-in. And for buying group customers who use their ‘own branding’ they can now order cuts and rolls online using their own branded names.

Cormar’s trade website has generated 15,000 orders

Masterpiece is a sales aid as well as a technical tool

“What retailers like is the efficiency of it. They receive a delivery date upon order, an email to confirm the order and a confirmation the day before despatch – all of which brings peace of mind and makes it easier to plan fitting days,” says Mr Cormack. Further options within the IT realm are offered by the MasterPiece measuring and planning system, designed for use in the store and/or during the visit to the customer’s home using a tablet. For retailers who want more, a start to finish system is available with all jobs held on a database, the company states. Additional add-on options include: automated costing, saved estimates and invoices tailored to the individual business; automated fitting sheets; accurate tile planning with products sets including Amtico and Karndean; and archiving for rapid access to a customer and measurements database. “As well as being a powerful technical tool, MasterPiece is a great sales tool,” says Charles Pearson. “It shows professionalism in the home, supports discounts/promotions and allows options to be run rapidly to bring the customer to the point of acceptance.” Retailers also have a number of options where software is concerned, one of which is Measure by RFMS. The company was founded in 1984 by a flooring retailer and reports it has automated over 3,000 dealers operating in over 7,000 locations. Early adopters of the software currently are some of the most successful flooring dealers in the United States, Canada and Australasia, the company states.

The estimating and bidding software program is designed to allow flooring businesses to eliminate the paper process and improve customer service. It provides a 3D rending with photo-realistic images of a customer’s room and can also assist in taking accurate measurements, calculating seam placements and managing roll cuts.

While aiming to provide complete control and reduce any short ends and unusable pieces, Reflex says its system assists in spotting sales trends and helping users to work with the best suppliers. The company states it currently works with retailers including United Carpets, Carpet Barn (Dorset) and Roger Harrod Karpet Kingdom.

“What has been a ‘slow-to-change’ industry is starting to embrace and implement modern technologies and RFMS ensures they have what they need,” the company states.

Tim Brennan, UK Flooring Direct managing director, says: “There is no doubt that buying online is now a daily part of life for many consumers, but flooring is something of a tricky proposition. Of course, as our success has proven, there are plenty of people willing to buy online but the very nature of flooring means thought needs to be given to the shopping environment you provide.”

Further support is offered by NedGraphics, the wholly owned subsidiary of NedSense enterprises NV, which is listed on the NYSE Euronext Amsterdam. “The corporate philosophy and professional approach of NedGraphics ensures a close working relationship with the finest designers and manufacturers by offering them solutions which are of the highest level of functionality,” says José van Rosmalen, sales director. “NedGraphics enables its clients to improve their sales through minimizing “time to market,” optimizing product development flow and reducing sampling costs. Each software solution is offered in a fully integrated modular system to guarantee the current and future operational performance,” he states. Stock management is another important aspect of any flooring business. The Caftex system from Reflex has been designed to manage stock in a retail flooring business at the piece level, with bar-codes and piece/remnant labels. Where there is more than one store all the stock can be viewed and managed from a head office location, the company reports. ‘Measure’ by RFMS eliminates paper from the process

Referring to off-the-shelf software packages, these may need fine tuning to suit individual needs, he continues, with the “sheer bulk of flooring” the biggest obstacle to tackle. “We have a free sample service to overcome this, but many software packages you can buy will not give this option,” says Mr Brennan. “As we have proven, it is possible to build a successful model for selling floors online, but the effort required to do so means that it is not something to be entered into lightly.” Further software options are utilised by rug-maker.com, described by Richard Mathias: “The designing and presentation software we use has helped us change our business over the last couple of years, from a retail showroom selling to the local community, to now 50% trade, with 15% being exported.” Establishing itself at the top end of the market for those seeking unique design, the business has also manufactured for other companies, converting difficult projects and bringing new collections into the industry. “Without the software we would not have been able to convert the Queen’s head into a stamp rug and get approval,” says Mr Mathias.

Quick step to reward Fitters who have completed the comprehensive courses offered by the Quick-Step Academy are reaping the rewards of being registered with one of the premier flooring companies in the world at a time when homeowners are demanding only the best tradesmen. Places on the Academy’s courses are filling up fast, as more and more fitters are recognising the benefits of becoming a Quick-Step approved tradesperson. As Darren Robinson, training manager, Quick-Step Academy explains, “Nowadays consumers expect extremely high standards of workmanship and the intense nature of our courses will ensure that all successful fitters will be able to offer superior levels of expertise.” For example, all floor fitters who have completed the prestigious Master Installer course, designed for those with around two years’ experience, have their contact details listed on a dedicated section of www.quick-step.co.uk, which has received an average of 200 consumer views a month since June 2012. Master Installers are also able to offer homeowners a free two-year installation warranty to provide complete peace of mind. In fact, registered Master Installers have reported that on average, they are receiving 4-5 calls a week due to their listing on the Quick-Step website, with several planning to open their own showrooms on the back of their Master Installer success. As Neil Read, of Reads Flooring, who has completed the Master Installer course explains: “Since completing the Master Installer course, I have been busier than ever because of my inclusion on the Quick-Step website. Homeowners are targeting my services because they want the reassurance that comes with a Master installation – the two-year warranty that is backed up by Quick-Step, and the guarantee that Master Installers will utilise their advanced skills to ensure that floor installations are completed to the highest possible standard. I even have plans to kit out 50% of my new showroom, opening in November, with Quick-Step products because of the increased traffic my business has experienced through my Master Installer accreditation.” T 0845 0738485 42 December 2012

Wool, wise up on the web

Acquiring growth

Retailers and flooring professionals who want to further their carpet care knowledge without sacrificing precious time on the shop floor or on site are encouraged to enroll with the brand new online training centre from the WoolSafe Organisation. Launched in October, the cutting-edge WoolSafe Academy provides comprehensive training courses that offer the ultimate in flexibility.

Plimsoll’s latest acquisition analysis has looked into the acquisition attractiveness of the UK’s largest 1000 floor coverings companies. The study has identified 149 firms as classic acquisitions – underperforming businesses that predators would usually look for.

As Steve Bakker, marketing manager of the WoolSafe Organisation explains, “At WoolSafe we recognise that retailers and installers are incredibly busy, with limited time to spend on full-day training courses. This is where the Academy steps in. The online courses have been specifically developed to allow trainees to dip in and out of modules to fit around their working day, splitting them down into more manageable blocks of learning that can be completed on the move, in the office or in the comfort of home.” Ideal for retailers and flooring professionals, one of the first courses available online from the Academy is the Carpet Complaint Investigation course. A comprehensive programme focused on identifying the causes of over 40 common and unusual carpet complaints, and featuring modules centered on correct test procedures, accurate report writing and how to conduct an in situ investigation. Those who choose to complete this course could even be eligible to become WoolSafe Registered Carpet Inspectors and join the Registered Inspector network, opening up the chance for additional business and exciting new opportunities. “Having our courses online means that we can condense them into smaller chunks that can be accessed separately, without compromising on the quality of information,” continues Steve Bakker. “Each bite-size module is assessed by a specialist quiz that is marked immediately for instant feedback. The WoolSafe Academy allows enrollees to manage their professional development and see with their own eyes just how much they are progressing.” The Carpet Complaint Investigation course, along with all courses offered by the Academy, is tested by a final exam and successful students will receive a certificate of achievement from WoolSafe. Other services available from the WoolSafe Academy include downloadable research papers and publications to aid professional development and an online store containing books, carpet inspector kits and technical equipment to purchase. However, the research company suggests that it is time buyers should be looking to broaden their horizons away from these classic acquisitions and should instead take a look at the 35 companies identified as high value acquisitions. David Pattison, chief analyst, said: “There are plenty of companies that need capital and would welcome investment. Distress sales have dominated the market in recent years as strong companies have looked to take over weaker companies and exploit ailing businesses. “But it is now time for a change in strategy. There are 35 firms in the floor coverings industry that buyers should be looking at. “These companies are privately owned, have increased in sales over the previous year, are debt free and are showing excellent profits.” And it is these qualities, Pattison argues, that make these businesses attractive acquisitions. He added: “Taking over a weak company takes time, is diverting and is a high risk. But these high value acquisitions would immediately add value to your bottom line as well as give you instant power in the market. “Indeed, buying one of these companies would give you quick access into a fast growing market and would instantly give you power – essentially forcing many of your already-weakened competitors out of the game. “Of course some of these high value acquisitions would command a high price premium, but this new analysis tells you why some companies are worth more than others and enables you to seek out growth. “Most successful businesses work with Plimsoll. For over 25 years we have worked with many of the leaders in this sector and recognise the challenges. A few minutes with a Plimsoll report can change perceptions and open minds to much greater profitability.” The new Plimsoll report – Acquisitions – provides an in-depth market and industry analysis of the 1000 leading companies in that industry. Plimsoll’s user-friendly analysis tells you which businesses could be worth investment. T 01642 626 419

Class carpet from Heckmondwike Heckmondwike Supacord carpets have been used for a refurbishment project at a primary school in Wiltshire. Aloeric Primary School, Melksham, saw three of its classrooms refitted for free, after the school won Heckmondwike nationwide Carpets for Schools competition. The project, which took place in August during the school summer break, saw over 100m2 of Heckmondwike Supacord in Blue installed across three classrooms as part of a four-day project to replace the school current tiles, which had been in place for as long as ten years in some parts of the school. “With limited budgets available we were wondering how to fund the new flooring we needed,” says Matthew Nightingale, Head Teacher at Aloeric Primary School. “Winning Heckmondwike Carpet for Schools competition came just at the right time. The Supacord range was the perfect solution and were delighted with the end result!” As the experts in carpets for education, Heckmondwike has supplied its Supacord carpet to many hundreds of school and college projects over recent years. “Supacord tough, fibre bonded construction has been proven to deliver thoroughly reliable performance, and people know that they can specify it with complete confidence, especially for this type of project,” adds Heckmondwike Marketing Manager, Abby Chandler.

Interiors sets the style The Interiors UK show have announced that Nina Campbell, one of the world's most respected and influential interior designers, will design the show entrances for the event in January at Birminham’s NEC. Taking inspiration from a magical and mysterious English Winter, Nina will create an entrance to Interiors UK that will entice and enchant! In a style coup for this year’s show, each of the individual halls at Interiors UK will also be defined by one of Nina’s loves; colour. Expect a marriage of traditional, well loved and opulent designs with a new, fresh and contemporary colour palette. Visitors will also be treated to an exclusive look at Nina Campbell’s latest products and designs in two show feature areas, Nina's House and Nina's Shop, in Hall 3. Nina Campbell’s list of clients and design expertise is unparalleled, and her beautiful designs sit well in both contemporary and traditional interiors - the perfect way to welcome visitors to the show! A selection of leading flooring manufacturers will be in Hall 2 at the NEC including Furlong Flooring, Oriental Weavers UK, V4 Woodflooring, Unnatural Flooring and Rama Carpets. www.interiorsuk.com

This rugged construction also enables Supacord carpet to be cut on site, so that individual flooring designs can be created without any risk of the carpet fraying or ravelling. This perhaps goes some way to explaining the popularity of the competition, which saw more than 160 schools, colleges and academies across the UK request samples of the new Supacord sample card.
