Carpet&FlooringReview Home is your Castle
The classic eighth cut-pile of Warwick Castle is the latest style to become part of the Leonis collection by Balta Carpets, enduringly resilient and superbly soft carpets for the home.
Crafted from two-ply 100% Leonis PP for a carpet that’s not only stain-resistant, bleach cleanable and enduring but wonderfully soft too, Warwick Castle bolsters an already impressive line-up for the brand. With a luxurious 11mm pile, this is a heavyweight (2,550g/m2) carpet that’s perfect for homes looking for a luxurious underfoot feel from a carpet that has great value at its heart. “We developed our Leonis PP yarn nearly two years ago and since it has become a staple brand for retailers looking to offer their customers great value and performance in carpets that have really versatile, on-trend looks.” reveals Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Group. “The launch of Warwick Castle strengthens the brand further, upholding the collection’s luxury-edge, without forgetting the ever-growing demand for value.” Available in a palette of 10 timeless and trending colours including French Grey, Marble, Crystal Dust and Cold Sand, the carpet comes in both four and five-metre widths, adding practical flexibility to its impressive style. Backed with a 15-year wear and 20-year stain warranty, there is no doubting this Leonis addition has the bite to match its roar. Warwick Castle is rated for General Domestic use and so is suitable for living spaces, hallways, stairs and bedrooms. T +32 56 62 22 11 www.baltagroup.com
All loved up
Love Story, the original collection of super-soft polyester carpets from Abingdon Flooring, is showing its true colours with four grey looks added to Deep Feelings and Lasting Romance. Bringing further depth in the main-growth spectrum, the additions see both styles enjoy an improved, wider colour bank.
Strengthening colour options in-line with market demand, Abingdon Flooring now presents Deep Feelings and Lasting Romance in 20 exquisite tones; including timeless neutrals and modern hues of silver through charcoal. With sufficient weight towards the grey spectrum, both carpets are now fully ready for the years ahead. Martin Peace, sales director, Abingdon Flooring, explains more: “At our Centre of Development & Excellence, we closely monitor market trends and our own sales patterns, and the strength of grey has been impossible to ignore. The silk look of Love Story lends itself particularly well to modern style homes, where grey is undoubtedly the colour of the moment. We wanted to make sure that Deep Feelings and Lasting Romance had the perfect shade of grey for any scheme. Our new palette has achieved this, while retaining a broad array of natural tones for those homeowners looking for something a little more classic.” Made from 100% polyester and with Abingdon’s Soft Fleece Bac for a more appealing feel, easier installation and improved underfoot comfort; Deep Feelings and Lasting Romance benefit from total bleach cleanability and a lifetime stain guarantee. With a cut-pile saxony texture, the carpets capitalise on polyester’s super-soft feel in a velvet-look that’s incredibly luxurious and which has made the carpets hugely popular in homes around the country. They also benefit from a long 15-year wear warranty, underlining polyester as a fibre for modern living. “When purchasing a new carpet, homeowners want the confidence that they are buying something stylish and made to last. With Love Story they get exactly this. Polyester’s all-round performance, impressive softness and easy maintenance make it great for use throughout the home. The Love Story collection is a popular choice and we expect the new grey tones of Deep Feelings and Lasting Romance to build on this,” concludes Martin. Made in the UK in 2.5, 4 and 5m widths, the styles bring a great value carpet for any room size, keeping waste and seams to a bare minimum. Abingdon Flooring has already begun a roll-out programme of updating Love Story POS units with the new colours. T 01274 655 694 THE STOCKLISTS December 2018

Polyester appeal
Offering the twin benefits of comfort and durability, the new Gemini collection from The Cormar Carpet Company is set to take a starring role. Gemini is Cormar’s first range made from 100% Dura Polyester, developed to combine resilience, stain resistance and softness all in one fibre. The carpet is also manufactured using 10th gauge machinery to give a dense pile surface that’s ideal for all areas of the home. The soft, deep-pile range includes 13 on trend, plain shades, including a wide range of subtly different greys and neutrals, to appeal to current consumer tastes. Gemini, like all Cormar qualities, is British made at their mills in Lancashire and comes with a 10 year stain and wear guarantee. It is expected to retail around £25 per sq m. Said David Cormack, marketing director at Cormar: “Market led and in tune with today’s consumers, Gemini has been developed to satisfy the current trend for softer, more luxurious feeling, premium carpet. And as polyester has become more accessibly priced, we have a new range using the Dura fibre that combines resilience and durability with practicality and stain resistance.” The Cormar Carpet Company produces all its carpet ranges from two production sites near Bury, in Lancashire. Its new regional distribution centre is in Hemel Hempstead, with a network of out-bases throughout the UK. It also owns its own fleet of over 60 vehicles to ensure a fast delivery service to customers, as well as servicing its retail customers through a team of 29 sales representatives throughout Britain and Ireland. Happy Christmas after a heady old year!
2018 has been an especially happy year for The Stocklists magazine – one of our busiest ever, producing more pages all about flooring that any previous year. It was the year of our first 100-page issue (for the Flooring Show in September) and the year we launched the Flooring Innovation Awards that turned into a huge success. “In a year of tough trading conditions, we’ve been really encouraged by the appetite of our readers and advertisers to be involved with the magazine and we hope we have helped inform and entertain the industry in 2019,” says director Diane Martin. “We wish everyone a happy Christmas – and a well-earned rest over the holiday period.” www.thestocklists.com

NEWS Installation on track
Products by F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used to install vinyl safety flooring at the Great Western Railway train depot in Penzance. A combination of Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane, Stopgap F78 waterproof surface membrane, Stopgap 1200 Pro levelling compound and Styccobond F46 vinyl adhesive were used to create an aesthetically pleasing floor finish. Contractors from Contract Flooring in Cornwall were subcontracted to install 400m2 of flooring in the newly built depot, which is being used to house sleeper trains, which will run from Penzance to London. A moisture test on the flooring found levels to be higher than 75% relative humidity, and therefore, the application of a Waterproof Surface Membrane (WSM) was required. Contractors used a combination of Stopgap F77 and Stopgap F78 WSMs, in areas of varying moisture levels. Stopgap 1200 Pro levelling compound was then applied over the area. Stopgap 1200 Pro is a fast-setting, minimal preparation two component levelling compound, designed for use over a wide range of subfloor types. In as little as four hours, Stopgap 1200 Pro is ready to receive floorcoverings, so contractors were able to return a short time later to install the new flooring in the depot. Using Styccobond F46, a solvent-free pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive, contractors installed Altro Reliance 25 safety flooring. John Hudson, Managing Director of Contract Flooring, commented: “We always use F. Ball products and often work very closely with our local F. Ball representative. We’re very pleased to say that, as expected, the range of F. Ball products that we used at the Great Western Railway depot enabled us to create an aesthetically pleasing, durable floor finish of vinyl safety flooring.” T 01538 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk
Finer finish
Osmo UK, the eco-friendly wood and finishes expert, has expanded its Spray-Wax range with the introduction of a new 3010 Natural option. Developed with professional users in mind, Spray-Wax provides a durable, low maintenance and hardwearing surface for all interior wood, including those in wet rooms.
Osmo UK Spray-Wax is based on the original Polyx-Oil finish. Producing a resistance to water and dirt, the product is hardwearing and smoothens the chosen surface. In comparison to conventional finishes, the natural vegetable oils and waxes allow for an even colouring and a harmonic, smooth surface result. The finish does not crack, flake, peel or blister guaranteeing an overall pleasing finish. Application is made easy with a cup spray gun, airless/air mix or HVLP. Simply spray the product on to the wood surface to achieve deep, longlasting penetration. Spray-Wax accentuates the wood's natural character with a slight white colour tone to emphasise the grain. The finish can be applied to surfaces, including stairs, furniture, table tops, kitchen worktops, toys, parquet and flooring. It is especially well suited for use in wet rooms, such as bathrooms and kitchens. The range incudes seven finishes, featuring matt, satin, transparent, gloss and opaque options in Clear, White and Natural tones. The tins are available in two sizes – 2.5L and 10L tins. Osmo is renowned for its wood treatments that combine product performance and natural, environmentally friendly ingredients. The company operates a policy of supplying only products that are ecofriendly during production as well as in application. Spray-Wax is no exception, as it meets the requirements of both EN 71.3 and DIN 53160, by being safe for humans, animals and even on children’s toys. Slip resistance class R9 is achieved by applying two coats, creating a safe secure surface for all. Spray-Wax combines purified, natural plant oils and waxes and contains no biocides or preservatives. Founded in 1990, Osmo UK has gone from strength to strength and today exclusively handles the sales, service, support and distribution of Osmo’s premium quality wood finishes and flooring solutions to the UK’s flooring retailer, contractor and contract flooring markets. Clever Concept
Launched back in early 2018, Concept Woods from Itec Contract Floors is already proving the go-to collection for contractors and specifiers looking for a stylish commercial vinyl ideal for use in high-wear areas.
Made by IVC in Belgium, the recently updated Concept Woods collection boasts a Class 34 Very Heavy Commercial rating, and is the first to feature the new T-emboss technology which brings a wealth of benefits, including easier maintenance, better stain-resistance, improved aesthetics – through reduced light-reflectance - and better slip-resistance. With Hyperguard+ PUR technology, Concept Woods retains aesthetic integrity with minimal maintenance and is available in two and four-metre widths, fully-compatible with Invisiweld. In a finish such as Groutless Wood, the combination of a four-metre width and Invisiweld is crucial in maintaining the visual ethos of the floor, reducing the number of seams and making any almost impossible to spot. Groutless Wood is a variation on the ‘endless’ wood look, a unique take on the aesthetic that underlines vinyl flooring’s capacity to imagine natural materials in a new perspective. Available in a whitewashed and greywashed oak, it’s a striking design that mixes the popularity of seamless finishes with the warmth and familiarity of wood. In Chevron Oak, commercial interiors have access to a classic parquet look without the fuss. Creating a vintage feel, the design is available in dark grey and light grey colourways, as well as a light-natural oak. It joins the collection to give 15 wood effect vinyl floors, all with the enduring performance that comes with all Itec Contract Floors decorative floors. T 0800 032 3970 www.itecfloors.co.uk

NEWS Rolling out the brand
Award winning manufacturer Cormar Carpet Company is all set to drive forward into 2019 with new additions to its delivery fleet – the first to feature the new look branding.
The 12 new trucks bring the total number of vehicles to 77 just in time for the busiest period of the year. It is the largest manufacturer owned carpet fleet in the industry – and will showcase Cormar’s new livery, as well as providing significant changes to the configuration of the trucks. Said Gary Mitchell, Cormar’s distribution manager: “The extra 12 vehicles represent an investment of over £1.5m as part of the rolling annual fleet replacement programme. This is on top of the major multi-million-pound investment in the southern regional distribution centre at Hemel Hempstead and the redevelopment of our brand look and identity. “Further customised adaptations to the cabs include extra driver safety features – improved lighting, non-slip flooring plus adapted ladders and handles for safer and more efficient handling. “The new vehicles will optimise the fleet, meeting the increase in demand in the peak period up to Christmas, and ensure we maintain our high standards of service for our retail customers. With over 170,000 deliveries per year, the fleet needs constant investment to ensure that Cormar is number one in the carpet trade for service and reliability.” It was over five decades ago that Cormar decided to make door-to-door delivery to retailers part of its service. Now from its base in Bury, Lancashire and its newly built southern distribution centre in Hemel Hempstead, Cormar delivers right across the UK direct to retailers and also through 27 strategically located collection centres, offering a 48 hour nationwide turnaround service to customers. Glad tidings
Opening just off the A6 in Preston, The Flower Bowl, is a large, single storey building with a grass roof which undulates to give a natural appearance. It is a new mixed leisure destination at Barton Grange that features a premium cinema, curling rink, ten pin bowling alley, crazy golf and several new restaurants. Part of the build was the addition of the Ocean Fish and Chips Restaurant featuring a maritime inspired décor. Designed by Nigel Phillips Design, six designs from the Palettone PUR range were selected to create the bespoke floor in the dining area of the restaurant. Caramel Kick, Buttered Corn and Hay Grain featured to create a sand effect and the blues of Weekend Sky, Superior Sky and Sapphire Star were used in a waved pattern to create the Sea. To achieve this look Nigel worked with Polyflor’s in house design service to build the custom floor design. As it looks towards increasing production capacity and boosting efficiency, Abingdon Flooring has invested in several new 1/10th gauge high-speed CAM tufting machines. Enabling the manufacturer to significantly increase annual production while maintaining a high-quality end product, the new tufting machines are already in operation. Representing a sizeable first step in a programme of investment and improvements at the company’s Welsh factory, which has also included the launch of a Centre of Development & Excellence, the new machines enable Abingdon Flooring to produce fine-gauge carpet at a higher rate. This is an important factor in the manufacturer’s future success. Steve Byrne, managing director, Abingdon Flooring, explains:: “We have a history for excellent quality product, but we are also acutely aware that the market is continuing to demand better value without a compromise on end product and so we must ensure we are fit to respond to this.
“This considerable investment not only gives the tufting expansion more physical capacity, importantly, it allows us to produce carpets of equivalent quality at a lower cost price. This effect is already being felt in the Abingdon Flooring line-up. The new machines are just one part of a wide-ranging programme of improvements at our Wales production site as we strive to become fit for the challenges of the market well into the future,” he said. Alongside the new machines and a state-of-the-art Centre of Development and Excellence, Abingdon Flooring is also in the last phase of commissioning a brand-new backing line. Alongside the tufting machines, the new line will allow the manufacturer to boost efficiency again, while maintaining its reputation for carpets of excellent quality. The line is expected to be fully operational by the beginning of 2019. T 01274 655 694 www.abingdonflooring.co.uk

NEWS Making connections
Internationally acclaimed architects and designers address the keynote theme Create’N’Connect.
“Create’N’Connect” – the keynote theme of Domotex, which takes place in Hannover from 11–14 January 2019 – puts the focus on the mega trend of connectivity. The “Talks” program element in Hall 9, staged between the various “Framing” display modules, will feature internationally renowned professionals such as designer Sebastian Herkner and the architect Ester Bruzkus speaking about the connections between architecture, interior design and product design. On each of the four days of the trade fair top-name architects, planners and designers, along with some interesting new talents, will contribute to the “Talks” program and present innovative projects and fresh new ideas that illustrate the key role of flooring in interior design. After their presentations these experts will exchange their views and ideas with the audience in chaired “Meet & Greet” discussions. On the Friday of the event one of the best-known German product designers, Sebastian Herkner, will speak on the topic of connectivity in relation to design and in particular how it facilitates new innovative possibilities in flooring design. Herkner's product designs and furniture have created a buzz at trade fairs around the world and his work is celebrated for the way in which he marries various cultural references with new techniques and traditional crafts and manufacture. Lyrical room compositions and unusual combinations of colour and materials characterize the style of architect and interior designer Ester Bruzkus. The Berlin-based trend-setter will be speaking on Saturday about the role of design in creating an architectonic whole. A total of nine speakers will contribute to the trend-oriented Talks.

Four international premium carpet traders explain why they are Domotex regulars and what the creative connectivity of Create’N’Connect means for them Michael Pourvakil is the President and owner of Weavers Art Inc., a Toronto-based company that trades in innovative hand-knotted rugs made from exquisite natural materials and crafted in a range of modern and traditional designs. “For my company, Domotex is the most important trade show for carpets and floor coverings – an event I simply cannot afford to miss.” says Pourvakil. He is noticing a current trend towards new designs, textures and colors. For a number of years, his buyers have been carefully seeking out rugs in a diverse range of silver and gray tones. “They are still looking for these sorts of color tones, but with added accents in gold and purple.” Hadi Maktabi is the CEO and owner of a high-end firm that started out as a traditional family business in Beirut and is now very much an exquisitely curated art gallery for oriental carpets, both antique and contemporary. For Maktabi, Domotex is the leading trade show for carpets and floor coverings and hence an absolute must for suppliers and producers from all quarters of the globe. It is also an opportunity “to see the latest developments in rug design” and “meet producers from countries that we typically don’t travel to.” Dr. Ali R. Ipektchi is the owner of IPEK, a Hamburg-based wholesaler of Persian carpets. “At Domotex, I can catch up with all my key customers in person and showcase my products and innovations to them, all within the space of just four days. “I can find answers to questions like: What are the latest trends? What’s on offer internationally, and what are people buying internationally? What are others doing? What is the retail side of the market looking like? Altogether, that is a big help when it comes to preparing for the year ahead – an incredible benefit.” James A. Ffrench is a director at New York’s Beauvais Carpets. “I attend Domotex because it gives me a complete overview of current trends and developments in contemporary carpet design,” Ffrench says. He uses the show to research his own purchasing decisions, and every year he heads to Hannover fully expecting to make one or two exciting new discoveries. www.domotex.de

Readers’ Survey – Annual review and prospects for 2019
Certain uncertainty! Retailer resilience battles Brexit Flooring retailers showed their resilience amid the buffeting of Brexit with an upbeat assessment of 2018 – and while “uncertainty” was the overriding response about prospects for 2019, just over half of our readers are expecting sales to grow next year.
39% said sales in 2018 were better than the previous year with 26% saying they were worse. 29% said the last quarter of 2018 was meeting expectations but an encouraging 40% said sales were exceeding their forecasts.
A substantial majority of our respondents, 61%, said they felt that Brexit had affected consumer behaviour in the run-up to Christmas and while 33% expected confidence to be better this time next year, 24% predicted no improvement and 18% reckon it is going to get worse.
But retailers have felt sufficiently confident in 2018 to raise prices with 71% saying they have done so – however, only 44% said that their margins had improved over the year. In 2019, a similar proportion (70%) say they plan to increase prices again with 23% saying that increase will be in excess of 5%.
While there may be less buyers about, there are some signs of better business quality. For example, a North-East retailer explained: “We have seen significant rise in the value of the average sale, although we feel that we have had a quieter year, with reduced footfall, our turnover has remained constant.
“Speaking to other businesses, this is mirroring their trades too. There are less ‘timewasters’ and ‘bargain hunters’ about, and we have been able to spend our time more enjoyably, and more profitably, with customers who have a genuine desire to invest in new flooring,” they said. Higher value LVT sales were accelerating this trend said many respondents.
Asked what had annoyed them most in 2018, a Yorkshire retailer commented: “The usual Industry self-annihilation of fighting to secure sales at even lower margins with even lower cost products to secure turnover.”
And another comment was: “At a time when we are enjoying healthier margins, it amazes us that a shop not a mile away, is trying to compete with internet prices - for Pete’s sake, the public has money to spend; it's our duty to take it from them!”
The appetite for polypropylene continues with 43% of our sample saying it was the fibre that has seen their best growth in 2018 but the popularity of LVT generated one of the biggest results with 77% saying interest in vinyl had grown.
Asked if manufacturers were doing enough to create new products to encourage sales, 59% said there was not enough but was really different in the market with about a third of our sample thanking suppliers for good product development.
“We have seen significant rise in the value of the average sale.”

61% say Brexit has
affected buying behaviour
71% have raised prices in 2018

53% expect sales growth in 2019
The Stocklists polled 2,600 retailers throughout the UK during November 2018. Replies and comments are recorded anonymously. Many thanks to all those who took part.
One reader in the South-East said the carpet manufacturers were lagging behind vinyl in marketing: “Near enough all manufacturers still have no idea how to sell the flooring dream. Raise the game and make flooring an aspirational commodity. Something highly desirable. All resilient manufacturers get it and continue to pinch market share.”
And the behaviour of manufacturers and distributors in supplying “indiscriminately” to “white van man” came in, as usual, for substantial criticism by retailers who feel their loyal promotion of flooring brands should be better rewarded.
So, looking ahead to 2019, retailers are still reasonably optimistic about the future even though 53% said they were “uncertain”, 31% felt positive compared to 16% who were negative. Breaking that down, 28% expect their sales to grow by more than 10% with another 25% expecting more than 3% sales growth. Another 28% are anticipating no improvement in prospects for the year ahead while 18% predict a decline in their performance.

BUSINESS NEWS Flooring leads Autumn retail decline Floorcovering sales suffered a serious setback in October according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) with a decline of 22% compared to the same month last year. The month’s sales figures dropped to £134m, compared to £174m for this time last year whereas the furniture sector as a whole was about level year-on-year. Overall, UK retail sales came in worse than expected by analysts and showed a marked reversal on a reasonable performance in August and September. The October figures saw furniture and lighting sales decline by 20% compared to September while floorcovering sales plummeted 29.3% to £134.6m from £190.4m the previous month.

Analyst Samuel Tombs of Pantheon said the figures were “the first real sign that consumers are tightening their purse strings due to uncertainty about Brexit. Unless the government miraculously manages to force the current withdrawal agreement through parliament soon, growth in consumers’ spending will weaken markedly in Q4.” Richard Roberts, partner and head of retail at independent legal practice Brabners, added: “We’d expect to see a dip in sales before consumers start loosening the purse strings in the run-up to Christmas” but said this would benefit food and gift purchasing rather than household goods as the festive season gets closer.
Carpetright ‘on track’ for recovery
Carpetright says that its restructuring is "firmly on track" in a positive trading statement this month. No trading figures will be published until the company reports in mid-December, but Carpetright says the numbers will be “heavily impacted by the disruption caused by the group's restructuring announcements.” The Carpetright rescue plan started in earnest in the second quarter of 2018, since when 67 underperforming stores have been closed with a further six shops to cease trading by the end of the year. “While as expected, like-for-like performance remained negative in this second part of the period, there was an improvement in the trend, as the restructuring activity began to take effect,” said a company statement to the City in November. Wilf Walsh, chief executive, added: “This is a transitional year for Carpetright as we work through our restructuring plan. I am pleased to report that this activity is firmly on track and has started to yield benefits as we create a right-sized and well-located portfolio of stores on sustainable rents.”
Belgiums bear brunt of UK import slump
The Belgians are suffering the brunt of the decline in carpet imports into the UK with the country recording a 25% reduction in cross-channel trade in September, the latest month for which figures are available. Some of this loss was at the expense of their European neighbours the Netherlands who increased their exports to the UK by 14%, but overall international carpet exports into Britain were down over 4%.
Victoria rolls back on restructuring
Victoria plc has had to roll back on a €450m bond launch restructuring plan following a month of volatile trading on the stock market which saw the value of its stock drop by a quarter in one day at the end of October following comments about reduced trading margins. The Group blamed itself for poor shareholder communications which caused confusion in the market. “By failing to communicate clearly in the run-up to the bond launch, the Company needlessly left shareholders feeling uncertain about the future,” said Victoria chairman, Geoff Wilding. “Critically, this also left an open goal for those with less than pure motives to spread outrageous untruths. This has damaged the value of the shares, although, of course, there has been no impact on the underlying business.”

Meanwhile US investor group Invesco has been building a substantial stake in Kidderminster-based flooring group Victoria plc which now stands at nearly 24% of the stock – a year ago it was under 5%. The latest trading update at Victoria for the six months ended 29 September 2018 reported sales growth of 3% over the previous year. 36 December 2018

Marketing insights Technology making the flooring business easier Whether it’s an engaging website, an innovative app allowing consumers to visualise their flooring choice at home, or online ordering and estimating tools for retailers, technology has transformed how flooring is bought today. Evening Oak Bathroom from Karndean Designflooring
Crucial Trading designs, manufactures and distributes the finest and most innovative floor coverings. Just as they lead the way in creative design, they’re also equally ahead with their marketing. Crucial Trading’s website has been redesigned to simplify the process of choosing from over 80 different natural floor covering ranges in Sisal, Wool, Sisool, Seagrass, Coir, and Jute. All of the designs can be custom made as rugs using the relaunched online Rug Builder and AR App which is available to download from the app store. Customers are taken through the process step by step: From choosing the floorcovering to selecting the style and material for the border and finally the dimensions. The rugs can be finished with a single or double border, in cotton, linen, leather or suede, and with or without piping. Using augmented reality, the new Rug Builder shows a 3D image of the finished rug which can be manipulated to provide a clear vision of how the design will look from every angle. Once you have designed your rug, using your phone in camera mode, the design can be ‘placed’ on the floor of your chosen room to see how the rug may look once it’s in place.
Karndean Designflooring’s interactive floor designer tool, Floorstyle, has been designed to help customers select the perfect Karndean floor for their home. “With an extensive range of flooring design options available, it’s more important than ever to support customers when it comes to narrowing down their choices and visualising the floor in their space,” explains Stella Coyle, national retail sales manager at Karndean Designflooring. “In a highly user-friendly format, our online floor designer tool, Floorstyle, offers a wide choice of room scenes in which to explore designs. “Customers can select from 34 different room settings and then add flooring choices from our catalogue of wood and stone effect designs. Up to four wood or stone designs can be blended within each room layout, along with a choice of design strips to create a grouting effect. A variety of styling options, including different laying angles and patterns, allow the customer to experiment with imaginative flooring designs.
“With an extensive range of flooring design options available, it’s more important than ever to support customers when it comes to narrowing down their choices and visualising the floor in their space.”
The Cormar Carpet Company have developed their new brand identity, placing the consumer at the forefront of the redesign of their website; key to this has been rebuilding the site as an important consumer resource for getting the right advice and inspiration.

David Cormack, marketing director at Cormar Carpet Company explains, “Homeowners are increasingly searching online for design ideas, inspiration and advice to help them choose the right type of carpet including using social media platforms to get this information. Online sites such as Pinterest and Instagram are playing a part and are becoming an important tool to help drive traffic to our website, and we expect that it’s likely to continue to grow over the next few years. It means that consumers now go into retailers better equipped and with a more specific idea of what they want.

“Homeowners are increasingly searching online for design ideas, inspiration and advice to help them choose the right type of carpet including using social media platforms to get this information.” “The online experience needs to be seamless for consumers. The reality is they don’t want (or have the time) to sift through lots of pages, text or use complicated tools and apps. So, on our new website we’ve included larger, more realistic swatch sample pictures and we use lots of high quality room set images to grab attention and inspire them. We’ve made it easier and quicker to order in fewer clicks and we’ve also done a lot to help give consumers the right advice in helping them choose the right carpet to meet their needs. “And since we introduced our new consumer website, we’ve seen a significant increase in visitor numbers, which in turn has increased demand for more cutting samples. We’ve invested heavily in improving the consumer experience from initial search to registering their guarantee online. Users can now select samples based on type, colour, room and price. We give them all the right information they need to decide which carpet suits them best, along with a list of their nearest Cormar retail stockists based on their postcode. “From a trade perspective, we’re already market leaders in the flooring sector with online ordering and have invested heavily in developing our trade portal so it works on all devices including mobile phones. We now have over 40% of our retail customers using our online trade portal and we expect this to grow as retailers become more aware of the benefits of being able to order, track and check stock and manage their accounts 24/7.” Inspiring consumers and generating an enquiry is just the beginning of the sales process. Wouldn’t it be nice if the shop sales person, the estimator and the fitter could all work off the same piece of paper and read each other’s writing? A quote is produced in store, within the mobile app, based on a rough costing using information provided by the customer and their own local knowledge. The customer signs the quote and pays a deposit. This quote is then allocated to an estimator.
The estimator will immediately have access to the quote via his mobile device and will visit the customer to measure and plan. The plan is created and the revised figures from the plan automatically update the quote. The customer signs the quote and may make a balance payment to the estimator (or arrange to go to the store). The store retains full visibility of the plans and once payment has been received, emails the worksheet pdf to the fitter.

The fitter has a full worksheet sent to him along with the products required, the cut-plan, the seamplan and any photographs deemed appropriate to the install. The store has a copy of all the emails, ensuring they are always up-to-date with the latest situation.
MasterPiece estimators and sales personnel continue to benefit from being able to operate on any platform: Android, iPad, Windows or Mac. MasterPiece delights its many users largely because it works the way they like to work.
For measuring, planning and automated fitting sheet the auto-planner only option is still the most popular; however auto-plans can now be adjusted if manual planning by drag and drop is added in, a flexibility appreciated by experienced estimators. The optional module for costing up jobs is highly valued, especially the ability to email estimates and invoices. There is also an advanced version which automates the costing according to your business rules. This is prized by retailers who want rapid and reliable costing in front of the customer, either in the home or in the store, with consistency among all involved. The advanced version also supports the selling process: for instance, the customer can be asked to sign on screen to confirm they understand what will be done to each room and who has responsibility for each task. Salient points of the T&Cs can be shown to the customer on screen. A library of materials is now available which the retailer can populate with best-selling ranges. And a schedule for the visits due today can be shown to help plan your day and keep to plan. Tile planning, for Amtico, Karndean and other products sets continues to be taken forward on Windows; forthcoming improvements include better support for retro tile designs where the centre field needs to consist of whole tiles. The take-off from imported PDF floor plans has also been speeded up via quick draw of rectangles and drag-adjust. With so much ongoing, it’s no surprise MasterPiece was a Flooring Innovation Awards gold winner 2018.

Flower on Flooring
by Dennis Flower
Attributes of laminate highlighted in latest introductions Continuing to extend laminate flooring collections can be seen to have had a positive impact for two of the industry’s suppliers.
This is also allowing them to promote laminate as an option that has considerable adaptability and providing retailers with the opportunity to recommend it as a viable solution that can realistically be used in any area of the home or working environment.
Tritty Silent CT by Haro
Further reminders of laminate flooring’s adaptability are provided by Woodpecker Flooring, which states: “Laminate flooring is truly versatile.
“It’s a great way to achieve an elegant wood look for a more affordable price tag. And today’s designs are almost limitless, with the latest technologies enabling realistic timber character to be captured in modern, traditional and extra rustic designs.”
Laminate boards are durable and highly scratch resistant making them suitable for high trafficked spaces and homes with children or pets, the company continues. And with natural materials becoming ever more popular in home design, laminate will continue to provide a valid flooring option. Woodpecker further explains that its new Brecon collection brings moisture resistance to contemporary laminate designs. Made of a natural composite core with a tough wear layer, the 12 new floors are designed to capture the naturally inspired look and feel of wood in a highly practical surface.
There will be the usual requirement for customers within this, of course, of listening to the advice of their retailer, to ensure that the best choice is made to meet all their aspirations and provide a final outcome that will be attractive and fit for purpose.
“It’s a great way to achieve an elegant wood look for a more affordable price tag. And today’s designs are almost limitless, with the latest technologies enabling realistic timber character to be captured in modern, traditional and extra rustic designs.”
Haro reminds us that laminate floors boast features such as excellent suitability for everyday use, robustness, ease of care and practical experience over many years. One perceived disadvantage of laminate floors compared to design floors is that they reflect walking noise more intensely than design floors.
However, the Haro Tritty Silent CT (ComforTec) laminate floor proves that this does not necessarily have to be the case, says the company.
The laminate floor solution is supplied with adhesive strips applied to the back of the individual floorboards at the factory, which allows the floor to be fixed easily and durably to the subfloor later on, during installation. This ComforTec technology, which is offered exclusively by Haro, provides the best possible connection between the screed and the laminate floor, creating room acoustics that come deceptively close to those of a fully glued down floor, the company states.
“Haro reminds us that laminate floors boast features such as excellent suitability for everyday use, robustness, ease of care and practical experience over many years.”
As the adhesive strips are produced on a synthetic rubber basis, the system is also completely solvent free. With an indoor sound reduction of more than 60% compared with conventional laminate floors measured in independent tests at the Wood Technology Institute in Dresden, Germany, this innovation is therefore promoted as the quietest laminate floor around.
The Haro Tritty laminate floor with Silent CT technology is available in options within the Tritty series. The eye-catching display with demo samples for the PoS states: rarely before could a product advantage be demonstrated so easily and clearly to the end consumer as with the quiet Haro Tritty Silent CT laminate floor. “This means real sales opportunities for the retail trade,” the company concludes.

from Interfloor
Interfloor’s underlay recognised at first National Flooring Innovation Awards
Interfloor was proud to have its products recognised in the inaugural National Flooring Innovation Awards, demonstrating its commitment to delivering new and exciting creations into an increasingly competitive marketplace.
The awards scheme is designed to celebrate the ideas, imagination and innovation driving the UK flooring industry to new heights. There were over 100 submissions in categories ranging from carpets to underlay to point-of-sale.
Winner Underlay: Tredaire Palladium
In the underlay category, one of Interfloor’s new class of Premium High Density (PHD) products Tredaire Palladium was named a winner. Interfloor’s Sales Director Gary Cowley said: “We are absolutely delighted to have received this accolade and recognition for our commitment to innovation. It really strengthens Interfloor’s reputation as an inventor of quality flooring products.” Interfloor introduced its highest density PU underlay range in response to market demand for firmer and more luxurious products suitable for use in all areas of the home. One of the three products in the PHD range, Tredaire Palladium 10mm was recently relaunched in response to customer feedback. Tredaire Palladium has high performance Textron backing to give it more dimensional stability and cleaner cutting during installation as well as exceptional ‘shock absorber’ properties to help give it a longer life. It has superior heat insulation properties and high acoustic ratings to reduce noise. It has a nominal density of 180kg/m3 and offers superior protection for carpets that is longer lasting and better performing. Palladium is also made from 100 per cent recycled foam, giving it excellent “green” credentials. The National Flooring Innovation Awards were sponsored by industry magazine The Stocklists and designed to be different from the usual ranked prize schemes, setting out to identify products and services that are genuinely new and exceptional. For further information, please visit www.interfloor.com
Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world. 54

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.
www.interfloor.com
Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.
www.interfloor.com
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Crumb
Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.
PU foam
Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. www.underlay.com
Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
THE STOCKLISTS December 2018
www.carpenterunderlay.co.uk
Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).
Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.
Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 58
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

Flattening
Shedding
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Shading
Indentations
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
Associated Carpet Group www.acgcarpets.com Contact: Richard Moore Tel: 01942 825520 richard@acgcarpets.com
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,
any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see
The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. THE STOCKLISTS December 2018
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents
• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Special Feature
The heritage at the heart of carpets The power and the glory of Kidderminster’s illustrious past The importance of the heritage of craftsmanship, creativity and ingenuity that drives the UK carpet manufacturing industry is brought to life at Kidderminster’s superb carpet museum which is celebrating six years since its opening and seeking support from the industry to maintain the high standards of its presentation.
Set in the historic Stour Vale Mill, the museum tells the 300-year-old history of carpet-making in a friendly, modern environment staffed by volunteers, many of whom are ex-weavers and experts in the textile trade. There are some 20,000 items housed at the museum including rare samples, photographs and documents but the beating heart of the place is the hall with two remarkable power looms which are lovingly coaxed into action on a regular basis – a Jacquard Wilton loom, manufactured in Halifax in the 1800s and a spool Axminster loom from the 1950s. There are also demonstrations on hand looms of the type that were commonplace in the attics of weavers houses in Kidderminster 100 years
ago, before the amazing growth of factory-based manufacturing which hit its heyday in the 1950s and 60s when some 15,000 people were employed by more than 20 companies. Today, there are still leading manufacturers like Adam, Brockway, Grosvenor Wilton and MasterWeavers working in the town along with the UK offices of Brintons. Top ratings on Trip Advisor bear out the appeal of the place. “Our visit there was fascinating, made so by the volunteers who were full of information and stories about their time in the industry,” said one reviewer this year. “A fantastic museum, we had to put extra money on the car parking as we were enjoying it so very much!” commented another. Anyone involved in the flooring industry should take the time to tour Stour Mill and the trustees are also encouraging companies to become sponsors of the museum and to use its modern facilities for meetings and presentations.
