Flooring Factsheet Adhesives
Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED
WOVEN
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.
Level loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality. Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms. CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas. Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.
Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms. CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home. Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.
Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the
BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

Regular Maintenance Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur. Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers! Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet. Use only WOOLSAFE approved products WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.
The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.
Periodic Cleaning When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company. If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE approved products. Look for the WOOLSAFE Mark on the bottle or package. It is best to engage the services of a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning company. To get a really expert job done entrust the work to a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. These companies are fully trained, have been in business for a considerable length of time, are members of one or more recognised professional trade associations related to the cleaning industry and have a reputation for top quality service. And they use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents on your wool carpets and rugs!
If you have a problem with a carpet or rug that requires an independent inspector, a network of carpet complaint investigators, trained and registered by The WOOLSAFE Organisation is available throughout the UK and Ireland. WOOLSAFE Registered Inspectors have extensive experience in investigating the causes for carpet complaints based on their practical involvement with carpets and rugs over many years. They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers, retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can carry out or commission tests where required, and will provide comprehensive reports. Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
www.flooringone.co.uk Contact: Glenn Harding Tel: 0121 683 1426 glenn.harding@flooringone.co.uk
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,
any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see
The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 8
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents
• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.floorwise.co.uk
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!
Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.
A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
SAMPLES
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.
SHEDDING
The original carpet tile
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
PULLED LOOPS
This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
• shedding • pulled loops
SPROUTING
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
SHADING
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
STATIC
Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.
FADING ON WOOL
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair.
Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.
A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
an informed choice.

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
INDENTATIONS
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.
The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet.
The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
FLATTENING
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
SOILING
Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or
any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave
sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust
- which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet
SAFE
Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
DURABLE EASYCARE
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
Comfort
COMFORT
Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.
Safety
The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet.
100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.
britishwool.org.uk campaignforwool.org THE STOCKLISTS February 2014
Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 17

DOMOTEX 2014: exciting innovations
“We can look back at an exciting and interesting show,” says Phil Hartley, Chief Executive at Edel Telenzo. For many people in the trade, Domotex is a key trade show, as shown by the increased attendance figures this year. For Edel Telenzo, Domotex 2014 was an important edition as parent company Edel Group had some ground-breaking innovations to show and, in addition, we were very keen to present a number of new products, of course. Our immensely popular Tube Collection will soon be extended: new colours have been added to the colour palette of our plain Centre Point and with these colours a multi-coloured and fine stripe have been created. Following the colours as seen at design shows in Milan and Paris, the new colours include Mustard (a yellow), Willow (a green) and Sky (a baby blue). The additions will be available from April. Our contract range will be extended with two new collections. Firstly the Baltic Collection, consisting of a multi-coloured and two striped carpets based on our Helsinki, a solution dyed 100% PA6, suitable for heavy contract usage. Secondly the Danish Collection, which consists of high-low boucle’s in sparkling reds, blues and greens to add some colour in commercial locations. Finally, our evergreen Fleur has been recoloured and the new colours will also be available towards the summer.

Main Image: New colours will soon be added to the popular Tube Collection. Above: Once again, it was a busy Domotex!
Watch your back At Domotex 2014, Edel Group launched the world’s first carpet backing containing no styrenebutadiene. Instead, Ceneva® uses a compound based completely on vinyl acetate ethylene (VAE). Ceneva® is the world’s first 100% SBR-free carpet backing and is the solution for those who are environmentally conscious. The use of VAE in carpet backing also has several advantages including the absence of odour, reduced flammability and lower emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). From 2014, Ceneva® backing is the standard for all Edel Telenzo carpets.

RAG for reliability
F. Ball and Co. Ltd has released a new version of its Recommended Adhesives Guide (RAG) for 2014, featuring over 5,500 up-to-date adhesive recommendations for floorcoverings, endorsed by over 200 leading international manufacturers.
Flooring contractors who gamble by using the wrong adhesives are opening themselves up to potentially costly mistakes. The RAG gives clear advice on how to get adhesive selection right first time, and is the industry’s most trusted guide to adhesives and floorcovering compatibility. Commenting on the newest version of the RAG, F. Ball’s Marketing Manager, Richard Harris, said: “Contractors should always consult an up-to-date RAG before selecting an adhesive, because the materials used in floorcoverings, skirtings and covings change according to advances in manufacturing techniques. The RAG really does take the gamble out of adhesive selection." The RAG is available as a free printed A5 book, an interactive, searchable version on the F. Ball website www.f-ball.co.uk/rag.asp and as a free app available for smartphone and tablet devices via the Apple and Google app stores. The printed edition is released once every year and the digital editions are regularly updated, to ensure that contractors have access to the latest guidance about which adhesives are compatible with which floorcoverings. All RAG adhesive recommendations are endorsed by the respective floorcovering manufacturers and F. Ball works with manufacturers constantly to keep information within the RAG updated. T 01583 361 633

With an underlay suitable for use throughout the home, Floorwise Aware is a great opportunity for retailers to discover the powerful positive promotion of working with charitable causes.
Supporting the work of Breast Cancer Care, Floorwise Aware has been introduced to give flooring retailers a unique way to engage with new customers as well as raise profile within the local community. Using the distinct and instantly recognisable colour pink for marketing and promotional materials and benefitting from the wide national reach of Breast Cancer Care, Floorwise Aware is geared to encourage communication and discussion. Contributing to Breast Cancer Care with every roll sold, Floorwise Aware will undoubtedly help in the fight against breast cancer, but as Richard Bailey, managing director, Floorwise explains, this is just one compelling reason to become a floorwise aware stockist: “Floorwise Aware represents a new step for the flooring retail sector, supporting retailers outside the normal boundaries of product point-of-sale. Working with Breast Cancer Care helps us to raise the profile of Floorwise Aware in national press and social media, while providing local support to retailers for fundraising events and sponsorship.” Through positive contributions to Breast Cancer Care, whether through sales of Floorwise Aware or fundraising activities, retailers can really and truly become part of a campaign that is far bigger than any the flooring industry has seen. “If you are considering becoming a Floorwise Aware retailer ask your customers how many flooring brands they know off the top of their head, then ask them if they’ve ever heard of Breast Cancer Care and the famed pink ribbon? We all know what their answer will be!” continues Richard. Each Floorwise Aware retailer will receive a comprehensive marketing pack, including window stickers, posters, leaflets and more. Further to this, they will be listed on the dedicated Floorwise Aware website at www.comfortthatcares.com and on social media channels. Help will be given on any fundraising events too. World class room
An Ofsted 'Outstanding' Academy in Norfolk has chosen Supacord carpet with inlaid bespoke logo mats from Heckmondwike FB to create a distinctive new identity and to help achieve its vision of becoming a 'World Class' learning establishment.
The new Ormiston Venture Academy, which replaced the former Oriel High School in 2010, required over 2,600m2 of Supacord fibre bonded carpet and three bespoke logo mats installed as part of a £8m refurbishment and new build extension.

Axion Consulting’s Jane Gardner has been presented with the 2013 Ben Heath Certificate for Outstanding Presentations from the Chartered Institute of Waste Management.
Jane received her accolade for a presentation on ‘Plastic Carpet and Vinyl Flooring Recycling’, covering innovation and progress in flooring recycling and re-use initiatives, which was delivered at a CIWM East Anglia Centre. She collected her certificate from TV presenter Michaela Strachan at a ceremony held at the London Marriott, Grosvenor Square hotel. This award recognises the importance of preparing clear, informative and interesting presentations, not necessarily involving the preparation of a formal written paper. Presentations made to CIWM events, either nationally or regionally, are judged against a number of different criteria. Jane, a principal consultant at the resource recovery specialist, said: “As this is a professionally peer-recognised award, I am delighted to have been honoured in this way and that it impressed the CIWM members enough to put me forward.” Axion Consulting is part of the Axion Group that develops and operates innovative resource recovery and processing solutions for recycling waste materials. The Group works with a wide range of clients, from Government agencies and local authorities to companies in diverse commercial sectors, on the practical development of new processing and collection methods to recover value from waste resources. A brand new 'entrance plaza' provides the focal point for the new academy. Heckmondwike FB was called upon to reinforce the school's brand identity in this key area by producing a bespoke flooring design which incorporates the schools logo and colours. The robust properties of fibre bonded carpet, which will not ravel or fray, meant that contractors B & K Systems were able to cut the Supacord carpet on site to create a complementary flooring design. Supacord in Steel Grey was used extensively in the school throughout corridor areas and in some of the classrooms. These colours from the Supacord range create a neutral base for bright vibrant furniture to be added to create a stunning effect. Widely specified in secondary schools, these colours are recognised for their positive effect on pupils' mood and concentration. T 01924 413637

The British Wool column Chromatone introduce new collection
The design industry is based on colour and matching shades from original designs to manufacturing is critical to the finished product. The wool industry has long used a system of colour referencing Chromatone - which is equivalent to Pantone but specifically for wool.
The seasonal shade showcases introduced by this West Yorkshire company at Domotex 2014 will be used by designers as an essential tool of the trade - allowing a designer in one country to manage colour integrity across international borders. It is mainly used in rug design and contract markets where colour is essential in design.

Boosting British business with UKTI
British Wool attended Domotex as part of the UK Trade and Investment’s (UKTI) promotion of British manufacturers.
“We like to offer a base for visiting industry at Domotex to host their meetings and assist them with a meeting point and this worked very well. We provided hospitality throughout the event and this service was very well received,” Tim Booth Marketing Manager at BWMB said.
The stand, which flew the British flag with a bold Union Jack design, also promoted the benefits that can be gained by British manufacturers through the UKTI.
“UKTI is an organisation which can help manufacturers wanting to expand their business by exporting. We encourage British manufacturers thinking about exporting to access their expertise and support,” he added.
Brintons win award for rug design
British Wool is delighted to hear that Brintons have won a prestigious award in The Wallpaper Design Awards 2014 - deemed one of the the world’s premier design awards.
‘Contemporary Style’, the new introduction is described as being inspired by ‘nature’s alluring elements’ and is a striking collection of sixty new Chromatone shades. It reflects the colours found in botanic gardens, fruit orchards, rocky outcrops and in the countryside.
“There is a more muted tone to this collection with blush shades and mauve hues. We have dedicated it to our former colleague, Jon Snowden who worked with us at Chromatone for many years and sadly died this year after a short illness. Jon was a lovely man and very good at his job and we wanted to honour him with this collection,” said Ian Robertson, Managing Director.
The new collection is housed in the standard format of a pom box which ensures complete compatability with the other seven existing intermediate Chromatone Collections.
They have won the Best Pixelation Award for their Cristian Zuzunaga ‘Deep Grid’ rug, woven on their high definition weave technology that allows Brintons to weave up to 32 colours.
Cristian Zuzunaga originally partnered with Brintons for a dramatic runner produced for the Campaign for Wool’s Wool House showcase in March 2013 and produced a stunning pixelated runner - Infinity - which was over 100 feet long. The design definition provided by the weave technology helped to make Zuzunaga’s unique design a stunning feature for the exhibition and was one of the most photographed exhibits.
Cristian Zuzunaga ‘Deep Grid’ rug 42 February 2014
“Twenty-five colours can be found within this contemporary pixel based design, highlighting our state of the art weaving technology and Zuzunaga’s innovative design style. We are delighted that this collaboration between one of the interiors freshest design houses and Brintons, which is one of the world’s oldest carpet and rug weavers has resulted in this prestigious award,” said Don Coates, Managing Director of Brintons.

Feature: Wool brand campaign
Wool is safe with WOW!
Woolsafe have added their weight to the WOW promotion for the cleanability of wool carpets and explain more details of the scheme which was announced in The Stocklists last month. In an industry first, eight of the UK’s leading wool carpet manufacturers have announced a brand new aftercare scheme for wool carpet consumers in exclusive partnership with leading experts of carpet care, WoolSafe Approved Service Providers. Named the Wool Owners Warranty or WOW! for short, the new scheme targets over 338,000 customers who purchase over 7 million square metres of wool rich carpet on an annual basis. The unique scheme has been devised to offer new carpet owners a premium aftercare service in line with their wool and wool rich carpet purchases. Rolling out across eight well-known carpet manufacturers in 2014 including Manx Carpets, Gaskell Wool Rich, Mr Tomkinson and Crucial Trading, WOW! provides a year’s free aftercare at the point of sale, completely free of charge. As expected, the scheme looks to the best in the industry and WoolSafe Approved Service Providers are automatically eligible to become exclusive carpet care advisors for WOW!. By signing up to be part of WOW!, Registered Carpet Cleaners are automatically sent the details of new carpet owners who have signed up for the free twelvemonth warranty. With a number of benefits coming for free, WOW! is a powerful incentive for new carpet owners in the interest of helping to protect their new carpet. If just 25% of new wool carpet customers register for their free warranty, this equates to some 84,500 customers allocated to Approved Service Providers each year.
For each tailor made, personal introduction, the scheme costs the WOW Registered Cleaner just £1.50 administration fee per customer, and £1.00 administration fee when renewing WOW! for another year. “One of the things I find so attractive about the scheme is that the £1.50 fee is for a customer and not someone who is merely curious and gathering quotations,” comments Ken Wainwright, WoolSafe Approved Service Provider. He continues; “ I have never been one for direct sales and marketing as it takes me out of my comfort zone, but this is the first time I have ever been enthusiastic about this area of my business life. Why? Because it’s all been done for me and I know I will have a new customer before I pick up the phone.” WOW! is already available on carpet purchases, so WoolSafe Approved Service Providers are encouraged to sign up at www.wowwarranty.com as soon as possible. For those interested in becoming WoolSafe Approved Service providers, the WoolSafe Academy will be running WoolSafe Fibre Care Specialist training courses throughout 2014, as well as many others including the new Advanced Spot and Stain Removal for Wool Carpet & Rugs. All training is delivered by leading industry experts and course dates are available from www.woolsafeacademy.org. T 01943 850 817
www.woolsafe.org
Genuine interest in aftercare advice Under the benefits of WOW!, the assigned Registered Carpet Cleaner will visit the new carpet owner to deliver spot removal technique advice and a free gift of WoolSafe Approved spot remover, supplied by the manufacturer. The point of the visit is to build a mutually beneficial relationship between consumers and service providers. Registered Carpet Cleaners benefit from instant introductions to high-end clients with a genuine interest in aftercare advice, at the best time when the carpet is new, as well as that all-important opportunity to build a lasting rapport through face-to-face interaction and upsell other services. After the initial visit, the carpet owner is invited to keep in contact and use their Registered Carpet Cleaner as the first port of call for advice and assistance with spot removal at home. If a spillage cannot be successfully removed by the carpet owner following the advice they have been given, the Registered Cleaner will visit the premises to attempt a free of charge professional removal. At the end of the warranty, carpet owners are offered the chance to renew WOW! for another year, on the condition that they have the carpet professionally cleaned by their Registered Carpet Cleaner. The Warranty can be extended each year for the life of the carpet.

DOMOTEX 2014 January11-14 , Hannover •
Happy Hannover heralds upturn “Buoyant mood” reported for an improvement in market conditions “People are less worried about the future and they are less price sensitive with more consumers prepared to invest in better quality products for their home”
Hannover laid on a Happy New Year celebration for visitors to Domotex – the world’s biggest flooring fair. “There is a considerably more buoyant mood in the industry,” stated Dr. Jochen Köckler of the show’s organisers. “The mood in the exhibition halls made it clear that the sentiment in the industry had taken a considerable turn for the better, with exhibitors speaking of greatly improved business prospects and an anticipated upturn in sales,” he said. His reason to be cheerful was underpinned by an increase in visitor numbers to 45,000 and the positive energy was reflected by the manufacturers serving the UK, many of whom reported strong trading in November and December. “People are less worried about the future and they are less price sensitive with more consumers prepared to invest in better quality products for their home,” said Steve Elliott of Associated Weavers. “The mood is improving and the market is more optimistic,” agreed Puck den Hoedt of Condor Carpets. Charles Annable of Brockway was a little more cautious and reflected the view of many manufacturers. “The market is definitely getting stronger and starting to grow. But we expected it to happen more quickly than it has. 2014 should start to see more substantial growth.” The atmosphere of pure enthusiasm at Domotex is the flooring industry’s antidote to the winter blues and is a superb showcase of the best and brightest. The 4-day trade fair attracts 1,350 exhibitors - if you were to spend just 10 or 15 minutes on every stand at Domotex, it would take you every day for more than a month to go round the show! Fortunately for readers of The Stocklists, we’ve done the whistle-stop tour of the halls for you! - and several pages this month and next will give you insight into who’s going to be making the running in 2014. This year’s theme for Domotex was “innovation” and new ideas were in abundance – with investment in product development and new manufacturing capability reflecting the industry’s renewed intent in a better market. Here are our innovation highlights from the show… Associated Weavers have unveiled super-soft yarn technology branded as iSense while Cavalier has been experimenting with space dyed nylon to creative uniquely distinctive designs. Renewed confidence in wool saw Wools of New Zealand displaying state-of-the-art wool printing technology while Crucial Trading has developed a superb multi-level zig-zag weave. Edel Telenzo made a major announcement, converting all their carpet backing to their new Ceneva latex - an odourless, less flammable and more healthy material while Foxi & Graph has launched an innovative floor-fixing matting for more environmentally friendly installations without glue. Laminate technology continues to evolve with leaders Balterio continuing their investment in the latest systems including a digital printing capability that comes on-stream this year while Earthwerks has taken LVT to new places with new highly coloured decors. And we can report that grass keeps growing! – at least, the demand for it does in the UK and the artificial products continue to improve with the latest Oryzon and Feelgrass from Orotex raising the bar on standards. Next month we’ll report on the latest style and colour trends from Domotex 46 February 2014

Sex in the city of Hannover Seduction is not just a range name, it looks like a whole new sales strategy for Associated Weavers! Behind the curtains of a matt black box in the corner of their stand at Domotex, AW were showing possibly the sexiest video ever seen in the flooring sector. The sultry star of the show was iSense®, a new polyamide yarn and the reason for all the passion is that this fibre “outperforms any other yarn when it comes to comfort.”
“iSense outperforms any other yarn when it comes to comfort.”
The great thing about all this hype is that it’s true! After watching the video, you are allowed to see, and of course touch, three new ranges which will arrive in the UK as Serenity, Splendour and Seduction and it is a genuine shock just how soft these surfaces are. And the polyamide base takes up beautifully a range of superb colours. “We’re one of the few companies that can print on polyamide and the development of this range is a real success for AW,” says UK MD Steve Elliott (pictured right). The iSense name will be seen across a collection of super soft ranges during 2014. AW’s talent for intelligent product development also sees their StainAway brand being increased by 12 new polypropylene ranges to the UK this year. New StainAway Tweed is a good example of the AW blend of technology and creativity. “We knew we were missing a strong tweed product but often you see a finish that looks too ‘manufactured’, “said Steve. “We wanted a natural look so we commissioned a tufting machine especially to create the right appearance and finish.” There are three different colours in each of the 12 colourways and this versatile, semi-contract carpet will be a strong seller in 2014. Similar attention to detail has been paid to Inspire which is coming from the same new tufting machine but this time three yarns are fed through one needle to create a fashionable peppered look in 10 colours that’s just a bit different. It will be in the UK by April.
AW likes to offer “good, better, best” options across its mainstream ranges so the best-selling Everest Twist and its plusher sister range Santorini have now been joined by Distinction at the top end which is more than twice the weight of Everest. They share the same new colour bank which has been updated with more silver and soft greys and less darker brown shades.
Entry level Home Twist introduces nine new colours to sustain it’s appeal to budget conscious customers while at the other end of the scale, AW reports that the newly launched Sophistication range had a strong season before Christmas and is set to become the number one seller for many retailers this year. Finally, increasing optimism about new housing starts has prompted the launch of Imperial Twist, a reasonable priced polypropylene twist in 12 smart colours that is targeted at retailers and developers. www.associatedweavers.net

Brockway brimming with ideas Brockway brought lots of new ideas to Domotex which demonstrates the company’s flair. Their stand was carpeted in Cavendish, an established popular carpet in 100% New Zealand wool which has just been substantially developed with contemporary new colours and stripes - and striking new options for a smart structured texture – the rib is shown on the stand here – all of which will be fully ready for the Summer. The company’s success with the rugged Lakeland Herdwick collection is encouraging them to look at more options in undyed British wool. “We are getting a lot of interest in this area,” says Brockway’s Charles Annable. “We need new stories about wool and the bigger retailers are really getting behind this concept.” Also pictured here are Brockway’s latest POS units which are rolling out to retailers now featuring a new themed approach for heathers, textures/designs and colours, mixing ranges across each drum to provide maximum accessibility and interest for consumer browsers.

Space, style – and new frontiers for Cavalier Cavalier has built a solid reputation for bespoke contract flooring with a commitment to technical innovation as well as the attention to colour and style from their in-house design department. The company came to Domotex to boost their export business and were looking for new agents across Europe to focus internationally on custom tufted work for commercial contracts. Cavalier had carpeted their booth with a new range, Space Style, a sister product to Confetti, which demonstrates their versatility. It is a smart and clever 80/20 which uses space dyed nylon as the synthetic component to create a randomized non-linear stripe effect. Available in 12 colours, Space Style is suitable for both residential and contract use. More innovation is planned for 2014 and the company expects to launch a remarkable new twist/velvet combination which has been sampled at both last year’s Harrogate and now Domotex to great acclaim – watch this space!…

Vintage performance from Balterio Old is the new new. Or in the case of Balterio,Vintage is in vogue. Europe’s leading laminates company has picked up the trend for aged appearance and turned it into a superb range for its Quattro collection that takes authenticity to a new level. Quattro Vintage radiates warmth from softly toned decors which have random knots and imperfections to give them aged appeal. The appeal of those features is reinforced by Balterio’s ‘True to nature” technology that gives the realistic touch using the most accurate registered embossing. “People are looking for the most authentic decors and Balterio have always been on top of the development and design for the latest in laminates,” says marketing director, Franky Terrijn. Quattro Vintage is an 8mm plank in 11 decors and builds on the established success of its sister product Tradition Quattro, a 9mm plank, which is being extended from eight to 14 decors in 2014 including a striking light ‘Coral white oak’ and a warm, authentic ‘Colosseum oak’. Both ranges feature the 4-sided v-groove which is popular in the UK. Quattro Vintage comes with the fold-down system PressXpress for easy installation. Balterio arrived at Domotex with 150 new decors – more than 80 of which will come to the UK – and that’s a sign of the company’s new confidence since its acquisition by the IVC Group in May last year, Europe’s biggest LVT producer. The corporate change is boosting investment in product development and, for example, Balterio will benefit from a €20m digital printing plant that is being commissioned this year. With all the options, it’s difficult for consumers to make that one choice that will just suit their home – so don’t – just order all the ones you like!

That’s the experience of Katrin and Dennis whose house has five different Balterio laminate floors in six rooms. They are one of the featured families on Balterio’s smart website which gives an insight into the choices real people make when buying floors. “I need variety so that’s why there’s a bit of a mix of modern and the more traditional,” says Katrin. “It’s varied and it reflects us.” www.balterio.com

DOMOTEX 2014 McThree – Making a Royal Living The latest Royal Living collection from McThree is likely to be a big seller with 60 designs that went into manufacture in Belgium in December. “We are trying to cover as many bases as possible with this range,” says Robert Witherington (pictured right). “We’re making a strong colour statement in a highly affordable rug that feels soft but has good bulk – you get a lot of rug for your money.” The company’s Wellness collection is one of the market’s favourites and McThree have kept this fresh with the introduction of new designs in on-trend, more subtle shades which include pinks and lilacs and some really appealing ‘stone-washed’ denim designs. Elsewhere on the stand, McThree was showcasing their new Turkish manufacturing operation Sofiteks, an opportunity for the company to increase affordability, but they’re aware that this is a highly competitive sector and so have sought to make a distinction in the designs they are bringing to the UK market which are clean and smart. Soft sell from Condor There is something soft about Condor that is getting a great reaction from British buyers. The company has created a collection of super-soft products in the latest trending colours including: Las Vegas in 11 colours; Crystal Twist with a dazzling display of 17 colours; Da Vinci which has the increasing popular peppered effect; and Empire Saxony, a plush dense 2-ply pile, pictured here with Condor marketeer Puck den Hoedt. “We wanted to create a family of carpets that people really want to touch,” she says,” and we have worked hard to develop the colours that really work in the UK.” But it’s not all soft – there’s a performance edge too to this range which is underwritten by a 10-year warranty. Increasingly international Interfloor Interfloor were waving the British flag at Domotex to increase further the strong international presence of their top underlay brands - Tredaire and Duralay. Interfloor sells to customers in over 70 countries and noted a significant upturn in activity at Domotex. “We were very busy at Domotex this year and there has been a marked improvement in the number and quality of the enquiries,” says Interfloor’s marketing director Steve Woodhead. “We were also very encouraged by growing interest in our Gripperrods carpet gripper, tools and tapes and our Stikatak edgings and flooring adhesives. Yaking on at F&X If the people at F&X seem to yak on a lot about just how smart their floors are, they have more reason than most. The company’s stand at Domotex was carpeted with yak hair from the Himalayas and that sets the scene for a new challenger in mid to high quality end of the British market.
“We’re about to get serious about serving the UK,” says Wang Yulin (pictured bottom right) who runs one of China’s most successful flooring operations and has now built a substantial distribution centre and showrooms near Antwerp in Belgium. “We have exceptional quality products with added interest and value. The UK looks like the right place to deliver these benefits.” The robust yak hair carpets which are blended 50% with regular wool in three colours are just the tip of a brand iceberg from F&X. A wide range of woven wiltons in British and New Zealand wool will be at the centre of the Himalaya brand. “The wiltons were launched last summer in the US very successfully and we’re now getting a great reaction from UK buyers, especially in the London area,” says Gordon Hugo, the marketing specialist for F&X. “There is not enough well priced quality wilton in the world but these products are right up there with smart, sophisticated designs,” he added. Also under the Himalaya label are a collection of 80/20 wool twists where the 20% comes from polyester PET recycled from drinks bottles. There will be two weights in 12 on-trend colours. The Belgium operation of F&X will also be delivering a high end collection of mostly wool loop pile carpets across 10 ranges as core business for the UK. On the synthetic side, the Beauty range uses 100% of the recycled PET fibre to produce a colourful range in three weights at 4 and 5m. Over the past 10 years, F&X has invested heavily with an integrated operation including 24 woolen carding machines, 25 tufting machines, three 4 and 5m backing plants and recycling and yarn extrusion on the synthetic side. In May, Wang invested $6m in 24 cabling machines and 10 heat-setters to producr 20m square metres of PP and PET carpets annually. All this is part of a new $30m factory at Xining in the heart of the Himalayas region of China. T 07976 607657 www.fxcarpet.com

DOMOTEX 2014 Edel is backing innovation As always Edel Telenzo has a smart suite of new designs on display at Domotex but this year that was only part of the story. But not only couldn’t you see their latest innovation, you couldn’t smell it either! The Edel Group unveiled Ceneva®, a world first carpet backing that has been rolled out – or rather under – their entire range. This is an odourless, environmentally friendlier carpet backing which is likely to have a major impact in the market. Ceneva uses a compound based on vinyl acetate ethylene (VAE), replacing the conventional latex containing styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) which not only has an unpleasant odour but has also been linked to health issues in recent years. Lower VOC emissions and reduced flammability complete the benefits making it likely that VAE will become a required specification for contract installation in certain territories. “It has taken two years to develop this product but now that we are able to introduce it to the market we have seen a really positive reaction,” said Edel’s Annemarie Hadders.

The Crucial art of the almost impossible Chances are that if it looks super impressive, feels highly unusual and is almost impossible to make, it could be a carpet from Crucial Trading! After 18 months in the making, the new zig zag design from Crucial was one of the most impressive products at the show and lived up to the Domotox 2014 theme of ‘innovation’. “This has been a real challenge,” says Crucial’s Michael Turner, with a certain amount of relish. “It’s certainly unique and very challenging to get made.” Crucial was looking for something spectacularly different following it’s success in stripes and the new design represents an exciting new departure in the sector. The innovation does not stop at the pattern... these stripes not only zig zag, they are part of a stunning three-dimensional structure. The new range is made is 100% Laneve wool from New Zealand and will be available in a large and small zig-zag design and four colourways when it is launched in early Spring.

Great British Wool In a bid to boost exports, British Wool were flying the flag at Domotex alongside the Government’s UK Trade and Investment organisation under the slogan “Business is Great Britain”. “We are selling strength and durability. British Wool is all about performance on the floor and where it matters most. A carpet takes a lot of punishment and it needs to look good every day and we want buyers to recognise that British Wool is an excellent fibre choice.” Tim Booth, marketing manager at the British Wool Marketing Board said. The Board, which markets the wool of over sixty different breeds of sheep from 40,000 UK sheep farmers, attributes the wool strength to the temperate weather conditions which over centuries has created sheep breeds that grow a more robust and springy fleece. This provides instant ‘bounce-back’ despite constant compression and which then offers less flattening in carpets and longer appearance retention. British Wool is also particularly reliable in the manufacturing process, having a long staple and is less likely to break during the spinning, tufting or woven process.

Beaulieu brands deliver breadth The Beaulieu group used Domotex to demonstrate the full breadth of their offering in needle felt and tufted products and they showed just how sophisticated their operation has become to meet the precise needs of their customers. Under the Orotex and Real brands, the goup has a presence in six major product segments: Home, for residential needle felt carpets and runners; Commercial, for contract products in rolls, tiles and matting; Events, for the short stay exhibition and conference industry; Automotive; Doormats and Grass (see panel). One of the best examples of the innovation of Orotex is their latest synthetic grass range under the Oryzon® Deluxe brand. “We have invested in extensive product development to produce a synthetic grass that is unique both in its softness and performance,” says Orotex-Real marketing manager, Bart De Bruycker (pictured above with his colleague Sylvie Stouten). The product has 50% more grass blades per square metre but the real secret is the research that has delivered different shaped grass blades, one optimized for performance, the other for softness. Softer still is FeelGrass®,the very latest Oryzon product which will be patented for its use of an innovative 2-layer contruction with a grass fibre surface on a needle felt ‘soil’ base layer. The result is a remarkably realistic material that is best described as turf rather than just grass!
Colour works for Earthwerks Earthwerks served up a cocktail of colourful LVT to get the party started in Hannover. “We wanted to do something different and innovative,” said Ton Van de Ven. “All our competitors do brown. We wanted something that sparkled – but which will also sell well!” The company commissioned a leading international designer to create a vibrant range in on-trend colours. The decors are printed from hand–painted originals to give an exciting fashion effect which is going to appeal to the more adventurous consumers and especially to architects and interior designers who can combine colours to make unique eye-catching floors.

DOMOTEX 2014 F Ball bags extra business Smoothing underlayment Stopgap 1200 takes pride of place on the F Ball stand at Domotex because it is quite simply the most successful product the company has launched for 25 years! “This is the best product we’ve introduced in modern history - it’s a real problem solver that the installers have taken to very quickly,” said Interfloor marketing manager Richard Harris. Stopgap 1200 arrived last May to great acclaim because of its versatility. It’s a low odour, fast drying, two component smoothing underlayment for preparing poor subfloors, even over old adhesive residues. Elsewhere, F Ball is beating the market black and blue for moisture control with two offers that control damp in sub-floors. The black product is Stopgap F77, a one-coat moisture barrier that dries in just three hours for same-day installations. F78 is a blue coloured product which is solvent-free and based on a two-pack expoxy resin system. Both are suitable for underfloor heating. F Ball already has a very high share of the UK adhesives market but has been busy building its market share in floor preparation products and in export markets.

A highlight was the new Midas 12 underlay which follows on from the success of Midas 8 and 10 and has been designed to meet the demands of the luxury domestic market. It was accepted extremely well by visitors – as a result gaining the support of a number of stockists.
Installers stick with Instalay Domotex is all about innovation this year and Instafloor had one of the busiest stands for their demonstrations of the new generation of fast fit, self-adhesive underlays under their InstaLay brand. The self-adhesive system backs a recycled rubber crumb underlay which provides a durable anti fatigue solution with excellent acoustic properties. Suitable for single and double-stick installations, the product range comes in two thicknesses - a 3mm product for LVTs, carpet tiles, carpet, wood flooring and laminates and a 5mm product for improved acoustic and cushioning performance with a variety of floor finishes. The adhesive system comes in high grab and low grab for permanent and removable installations and provides significant time savings on installation as well as solving problems such as protecting legacy floors and forgiving minor sub-floor imperfections. It’s suitable for underfloor heating too. “We launched only three years ago and now the market has come to trust the product and understand what it can do. Once installers have used InstaLay, they want to use it again,” says Instafloor’s Shaun Smith.

New Zealand Wool Centre of creativity Wools of New Zealand’s spectacular Wool Centre was a triumph. A beautiful, light, decorative stand showcased both the beauty and versatility of the fibre but also all the creative skills that Wools of New Zealand have to offer the industry, be it colour trends or product innovation. They also succeeded in having 9 ‘partner’ stands around the periphery of the main stand, all of which were designed by Joanna Ramsden of Wools of New Zealand to complement the look, feel and tone of the Wool Centre. Modern technology working with traditional skills was a sub theme of the stand. The stunning main stand carpets, for example, combined the modernity and technological challenges of a wool print with a traditional Wilton. The print, inspired by the tiled floors of Italy’s palazzos and villas, was made by Halbmond. It came in 16 different pieces which had to be knitted together over the course of 36 hours. The inlay was a 100% loop pile mosaic Wilton manufactured by New Franco Belge. ‘Innovation’ was the flagship initiative of the Show’s organisers as it sought to ‘push the boundaries’ with flooring. Not surprisingly, Wools of New Zealand had 3 product innovations that were winners. Mirage was inspired by the latest handbag collections and combined wool with silk to produce a visually interesting carpet. Bond Street was a Saville row inspired twill in which four neutral colours combine to form a striking design that had both feminine and masculine appeal. Highland Tweed combined a chenille yarn made of wool and bamboo with gold lamay to produce an elegant and rustic look. While Wools of New Zealand were enjoying success, so were their partners. Westex, Brockway, Cormar, Flock, Crucial Trading and Cavalier, all expressed their pleasure at the way the Show had gone and at the help received from Wools of New Zealand. Simon Thomas at Westex said: “We’ve seen customers from America, China, Scandanavia and Russia. One customer is taking samples in 150 stores of our new Exquisite collection and the reaction to our whole range has been extremely positive. This really is the best platform for us.”

Sensational success for Cormar Cormar came to the Continent to tell it’s global customers about it’s recent successes with the Sensation family of products. Sensation Original is a super soft, luxurious, deep pile carpet made from the silky Luxelle PP fibre and it’s progress in 2013 was, well, ‘sensational’. Cormar added a Heathers version last Summer and followed that up with Sensation Twist in time for Christmas. “The market has really taken Sensation to its heart,” said Cormar’s David Cormack. “We worked hard on the colourbank with both contemporary neutral and more colourful shades and I think we’ve got it absolutely right!” Cormar were at Domotex as part of the Wools of New Zealand stand and celebrated that partnership with a smart new colour update for the popular Home Counties range which will now be the first Cormar product that is branded as New Zealand wool. The carpet is an elegant 80/20 twist in two weights and the quality of the wool shines through in the clean colour choice of 18 shades. A twin range Home Counties Heathers will also be launched at the same time in 14 colours. Domotex was a great opportunity for Cormar’s new export manager to get up to speed – Robert Mulder joined the company in June.

Birmingham vs. London. Stealing the show?...
The flagship furniture show Interiors UK has announced a move to London next year - but the current venue, Birmingham’s NEC, has fought back with a rival bid to launch it’s own event to challenge the change.
The prospect of two competing events is likely to confuse the sector, including several flooring companies who exhibit at the event. Just for good measure the new dates for the London event clash with the Buying Group’s National Flooring Show, a major industry event in Solihull scheduled for the same week in May. Interiors UK organisers UBM announced the pull out from the NEC just days before their 2014 show was about to open (the 2014 event did go ahead as usual in Birmgham however!) The Interiors UK show in 2015 will be at the Excel Centre in London and change its dates to May 17-19 to run alongside the popular “May Design Series” event. Andrew Vaughan of UBM commented: “It's a tough decision but it's the right one. We've carried out 18 months of research and exhibitors have seen the logic of moving. Exhibitions we've previously moved from the NEC to Excel have seen growth.” UBM says the move will increase the number of visitors, create a major international event and allow retailers to make better buying decisions as they will have seen the spring's main product launches. NEC BIRMINGHAM 19-22 JANUARY 2014
NEXT MONTH we’ll be reporting on the flooring people at the Interiors UK event event including the successful launch of Furlong’s Sahara & Oasis ranges, pictured above.
Within hours of the UBM announcement, the NEC hit back with the launch of a new event called the ‘Furniture Show’ which will run in the established January slot. “"Naturally we are disappointed that UBM have decided to relocate Interiors to ExCeL from 2015,” says the NEC’s Stephen Richards. “We have to recognise that the decline in the Interiors show over the last few years has not just been a function of the difficult high street, and we would obviously prefer to be working with them to revive the offer for the UK and International trade here in Birmingham. “From my experience, a London event will satisfy a relatively small niche of suppliers and buyers who might well feel more comfortable in a designer/interiors kind of environment – it will not, however, satisfy the vast majority in the industry who need to reach all retailers from throughout the UK.”
Visitation innovation from Foundation The Carpet Foundation is launching a new digital initiative that it says will demonstrably prove what members get for their membership. While the TSI backed Code of Practice is seen as a ‘deal clincher’, it is hoped that this will be the ‘deal opener’ – and also lead to new retailers coming on board. Representatives from the Carpet Foundation manufacturers received briefings in January and are set to roll it out from February. The ‘Be Seen. Be Found. Be Visited.’ initiative is all about promoting retailers’ shops, in their own town, to their customers by unlocking the power of the internet. It is not promoting, or encouraging, selling online but it is designed to ensure that retailers’ websites are a potent adjunct to their business and add benefit. As over 3 million consumers search for carpet online every month, and 180,000 look for a carpet shop, the Foundation argues that not having an effective online presence is like shutting one’s shop for a day. The idea was piloted on 2 retailers at the back end of 2013 with very encouraging results. Before the intervention of the Foundation, when it came to Google and online searches, both retailers were losing out to the competition on their area. Today, the story is very different – and it has led to new business for both retailers. A 3 minute film has been produced showcasing the offer and its benefits. Andrew Stanbridge, Carpet Foundation Chief Executive said: “The biggest criticism the Foundation has always faced is ‘what am I getting for my money’? This will prove conclusively what we are delivering, right to their shop, in their town. What is more, they will almost certainly be new customers. The internet is where we as consumers do our due diligence for most purchases. A lot of retailers complain about the ‘man in a van’ taking business from them – well the internet is where he gets his customers. By working with us, as impartial and ‘honest brokers’, our retail members will get increased footfall at no extra expense.” T 01562 747 359 www.carpetfoundation.com

Flower on Flooring Stripes make star performers The popularity of stripes and coordinates was seen to increase by many last year, leading to expectations remaining high for additional activity this year.
Gala & Stripes by Balta
The importance of keeping pace with market trends was emphasised in 2013, with a number of companies reporting encouraging response to their ranges designed to match fashionable trends. Among those experiencing growing demand is Brockway, whose managing director Charles Annable says: “There continues to be a renaissance in carpet design, with co-ordinating plains and stripes making a popular comeback. Carpet is now becoming a focal point of fashion in interior designs, with the use of stripes to make a dramatic statement, especially in hallways and on stairs, being very much on trend.” Vogue Serenity by Brockway
harmony in the home. Alternative Flooring's mix and match stripes and complementary plains create a flow between upstairs and downstairs. Rock 'n' Roll Tutti Frutti stripe on the stairs partnered by Wool Romance 'Always' in the hall results in a scheme which connects these spaces smoothly and is dynamic without being distracting.” Further options of stripes and coordinates are provided by Balta Broadloom. Its 100% Stainsafe Gala & Stripes collection takes four stripe colourways and harmonises them with a range of plain styles, including the reassurance of 15 year wear and stain warrantees while creating a completely coordinated look. This creates the striped staircase look with a 19.5cm repeat, while bringing underfoot comfort in larger rooms with its plain styles. Gala & Stripes is available in either Ultratex Quick felt or a synthetic backing.
“Going all Rock 'n' Roll on the stairs and classical in the hall needn't mean a lack of harmony in the home” Demand for the company¹s premium Designer Collection Vogue range and Classic Collection Solar range has never been stronger, he states. Cool or black hue stripes are especially popular and Brockway¹s Jubilee range became one of its top three best sellers.
“With Gala & Stripes we¹ve introduced the benefits of bleach cleanable Stainsafe fibre in a coordinated collection that ensures a perfect match,” says Balta Group marketing director Geert Vanden Bossche. “The collection was updated in 2013 and is a firm favourite with retailers looking to respond to the latest in home trends at a price point that is obtainable for more homeowners.”
“The nine striped designs pick up on the colours in Jubilee¹s plain carpets, which range from deep, lush black, chocolate and burgundy to fresh, delicate pinks, lilac and greys. Each striped carpet features five of the Jubilee palette of colours and so can co-ordinate with several of the plain carpets,” says Mr Annable.
Ulster Carpets found stripes were big news in 2013 and states its Wellington Stripe has been a bestseller as part of its Open Spaces Laneve Collection. Made with 100% New Zealand Laneve wool, Wellington Stripe offers a contemporary feel, practicality and durability alongside the luxury and softness of a pure wool carpet, the company states.

Heckmondwike FB marketing manager Abby Chandler, says carpet is increasingly used for demarcation in offices and educational environments. "Here, you will often find designers using 'zoning techniques' where accent colours in carpet are used to create specific zones, whether that be to identify walkways or areas for seating or relaxation," she says. Visual interest is also created by carpet designs with a neutral base that complement current trends in furniture and seating, resulting in her company's plans to introduce six colours to its Array range this Spring to provide even more design opportunities. "Array is widely specified in conjunction with our broadrib carpet in accent colours to create attractive 'zoned' areas within a building, where the purpose is clearly demonstrated through the carpet," says Ms Chandler. The trend of specifiers combining clever techniques with the bespoke capabilities of carpet manufacturers to create stunning designs is expected to continue, she concludes. Whitestone Weavers UK sales director Vince Holden says: “The stripe is here to stay. It¹s a staple flooring option that has worked its way into design conscious homes and hospitality venues, offering a welcome contrast to the neutral plains that have dominated floorcoverings for so long.”

Recycling ahead
Latest figures released by Carpet Recycling UK reveal a record-breaking 107,000 tonnes of waste carpet were reused, recycled and recovered in the UK during 2013 – up 21% (22,000 tonnes) on the previous year. This landfill diversion rate of 27% means that CRUK has exceeded its original target of 25% by 2015 two years early. This target was set in 2008 when the industry’s award-winning not-for-profit organisation was launched to tackle the 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arising annually in the UK.
Increased volumes have been helped by a three-fold rise – from 15 to 45 - in the number of local authorities providing dedicated carpet collection facilities, as well as the creation of new outlets and innovative end uses for recycled carpet waste encouraged by CRUK. With the support of key UK manufacturers and distributors keen to demonstrate producer responsibility for their products, CRUK has been instrumental in changing the perception of carpet waste for the better; from uplifted materials to post-production and installation off-cuts. Reuse and recycling of waste carpet increased 19% or by 7,000 tonnes and energy recovery rose 31% or by 15,000 tonnes in 2013 compared to 2012. CRUK’s new ambitious landfill diversion target is 60% by 2020. CRUK Director Laurance Bird said: “We are confident that this can be reached given the progress rate over the past five years as the demand for carpets as a material stream has increased steadily. Carpet is now regarded as a beneficial resource from which valuable raw materials can be extracted for reuse in a second life.” T 0161 440 8325 60 February 2014

Clean up on complaints
Loss of the ‘magic man’
Appropriate cleaning regimes help enhance the longevity and performance of all floorcoverings and must embrace the frequency of cleaning as well as the method used. For flooring manufacturers, putting these messages across, and providing sound guidance to their clients, should be an integral part of good customer service and will help build their reputation in the marketplace.
John was recruited by Lewis Mercado in the late sixties after a successful career at Wilkies where he headed up sales. Lewis was expanding Mercado, moving to the new premises in Cross Green and was smart enough to know he needed the best salesman in the trade if he was to take the business forward.
Frustratingly, complaints about flooring often stem from a poor cleaning regime rather than any inherent problem with the flooring product. One problem is that advice is not communicated from the manufacturer’s client, who may be the architect or building owner, to those responsible for organising and undertaking the cleaning. There is also the issue of those charged with cleaning not acting upon or understanding the advice, says Justin Binks, Director of SEBO UK. To maintain the appearance and longevity of carpets it is vital that appropriate vacuum cleaners and maintenance routines are used. One of the main causes of damage to a carpet is the fine grit and abrasive particles that sink into the pile. Foot traffic across the surface then crushes the pile against these particles, causing the fibres to be cut and excessive wear to occur. If the pile of a carpet becomes compressed it tends to hamper the removal of grit and dirt so suction on its own is not always effective. For this reason, cylinder vacuum cleaners are relatively inefficient and, where they are used, the appearance and longevity of the carpet is likely to suffer. This is why carpet manufacturers tend to recommend upright vacuum cleaners. These have rotating brushes that are good at opening up the pile so trapped dirt is released and sucked out, along with hair and fibre that may have become enmeshed in the pile. In addition, upright cleaners help avoid pile compression that causes a carpet to look dirty and worn. Ideally, manufacturers should help by providing a cleaning and maintenance routine that is handed to the end user on completion of the flooring installation. This needs to include information on the type of vacuum cleaner and other cleaning equipment to be used, the frequency of cleaning and the most appropriate methods to use. T 01494 465 5335

The flooring industry is mourning the loss of John Wharton, writes Keith Yates of Alvin Morris.
Along with Lewis & Roger Ellis, he took Mercado through a golden period of expansion on the back of John’s ebullient sales drive. Themed “Mercardorama” trade shows, they were legendary in the trade as was the “Magic Man”. “Magic Bonds” points promotions and monthly newsletters were all products of John’s fertile imagination, ahead of their time, and fuelled the rapid growth of Mercado. Whilst the trade saw the driven business man, those close to him saw a different John, staunch family man, compassionate, loyal and generous. John was also a determined and forceful charity worker, in particular his work for the variety club organising charity golf days. He never failed to attract generous sponsorship and a plethora of sporting and TV stars to make a “magic” day for all involved which always climaxed by the presentation of a new mini-bus with all the kids on board, John smiling behind the wheel! Times moved on and in the mid-eighties Lewis sold the business to Combined English Stores with John promoted to Joint MD, although I am not sure John ever saw himself as anything other than the main man! CES was bought by Next and the consensus of opinion was that High Street “guru” George Davies would have little time for a distribution business but after just one meeting with John, he agreed to let Mercado use the Next name in their private collections. It was unheard of then or since for Next to allow their name to be used in this way, and perhaps George Davies realised he had met his match in the man with the big cigar! Next hit troubled times in the early nineties and Mercado was sold to venture capitalists with John and Roger at the helm. The housing market crashed badly affecting all the flooring trade. John threw everything he knew at it to keep the business alive, working all hours, out of his comfort zone, dealing with bankers and finance people rather than “carpet people” . This culminated in a near fatal heart condition, a major operation to save his life and ultimately his wellearned retirement where he spent 20 happy years looking after his family, playing his beloved golf and even turning his hand to making furniture. This remarkable man touched and influenced the lives of all who met him - one brief meeting was enough to etch in your memory the image of this diminutive, determined, kind and generous man with a big cigar and a bigger personality. Rest in Peace, “Magic Man”.
