Ring in the New Year with the new StainAway look It’s another new year for our long-standing bleach-cleanable StainAway brand. So in the spirit of Auld Lang Syne, we’re relaunching two of our favourite Scottish-inspired styles – Skye and Islay, part of the Island Weave collection. Comprising a natural-look loop and rib construction in 100% polypropylene, they have been recoloured to meet 2016 trends. Island Weave is a multi-width carpet with a 10-year stain and wear warranty. Gladiator is another tough brand that we’re turning into an even stronger proposition this

year. Also in hard-wearing bleach-cleanable 100% polypropylene, this now has a convenient 5m wide variant to meet customer demand. Gladiator has a waterproof gel backing, suitable for heavy domestic and medium contract use. Also recoloured for the new season, this is the perfect carpet for bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms. Island Weave and Gladiator are trusted friends that have been around for a long time. At competitive price points they should prove to stay popular with your customers through 2016.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot?

Associated Weavers Sales: 01422 431100 Email: salesuk@awe.be

StainAway has been a very successful brand for Associated Weavers across the years, but we never rest on our laurels. Our relaunch of StainAway this year will see the introduction of more contemporary and eye-catching designs to keep it in the forefront of your store and uppermost in customers’ minds. It’ll join forces with our other popular brands such as iSense and Invictus to make 2016 an unforgettable year.

Affordable and versatile StainAway

The new StainAway brand has some important features. As well as being tough, durable and easy to clean, the styles are available in multi-width variants and come with 10-year, 15-year or 20-year warranties for both stain and wear. This pedigree makes it a family-friendly carpet for which demand will be high. So, should auld acquaintance be forgot – just remember Associated Weavers in 2016. Ask your sales manager to give you a full update as soon as possible on our exciting new collections.

Ready for kick-off

It’s midway through the football season.

Thank heavens for StainAway in our house.

We are very much looking forward to meeting our customers there as we have some exciting new developments to show,” says Phil Hartley, MD Edel Telenzo. The popular Barbican collection – formerly consisting of six two-tones and two complementary stripes – will be extended to include four more stripes, making it an ideal family-home product which allows for beautiful interior combinations. Additional new developments include a revised 50/50 offer and of course, the new best-sellers Diversity and its sister-product, Liberty (pictured here) will be on display. “So a lot to see! We look forward to welcoming you to our stands,” concludes Hartley. At DOMOTEX, you will find Edel Telenzo in Hall 5, stand C16. During the January Furniture Show, Edel Telenzo are in Hall 2, stand FS 14.

Fabulous fibres Thanks to powerful in-house manufacturing capability F&X Carpets can provide retailers with a mix of different fibre types across a broad spectrum of great value carpets for the home. From the stain-resistant Suretex polypropylene to Aevita PET (100% recycled plastic) and Himalaya wool and wool-rich styles, the F&X name is fast becoming synonymous with the ideal combination of style, quality and value at every price point. “Homeowner wants and needs vary dramatically and so we believe it is far better not to restrict ourselves to a particular fibre type or carpet style instead offering a rounded collection of carpets. We can meet almost every need or want without forgetting the value that is at the cornerstone of every carpet bearing the F&X name,” comments Gordon Hugo, sales manager. Thanks to impressive manufacturing capabilities, F&X Carpets tufts all carpets in-house and will soon provide complete vertical integration through its polypropylene supply chain through its own extrusion facility. The manufacturer is already recycling and extruding plastic bottles into its Aevita yarn. T 07976 607657

NEWS Watch out for Wineo Watch this space for Wineo Purline as something important looks like it’s about to happen to the UK LVT market. Wineo is part of giant German flooring company Windmöller and Purline is their organic resilient flooring product – organic meaning that it’s made from rapeseed or castor oil rather than petrochemicals and comes free from chlorine, solvents and platicisers. It can be disposed off in conventional landfill. Glenn Watts (picured below) is distributing Wineo Purline in the UK and commented: “This is the resilient flooring product for the modern market. We have had great success with this in Europe and now we want the UK to take it to heart. This is the friendliest resilient flooring on the planet.” The UK range starts with 26 timber plank options alongside 14 stone, tile and marble decors and a warehouse in Sheffield will be stocking up to meet demand. Faster access for recycling Recofloor’s re-designed website offers significantly-improved functionality and new features, providing all the information that flooring companies need to recycle their waste vinyl flooring. Easier to navigate and more user-friendly, the comprehensive site www.recofloor.org has direct links to the websites of Altro and Polyflor, founders of the UK’s national vinyl flooring recycling scheme. Familiar features remain, such as the map showing all the 64 Recofloor drop-off sites across the UK and Ireland and a cost calculator to work out how much money you can save by using the Take Back scheme. Key new additions include dedicated pages for contractors and distributors where they can access useful data such as online forms to request collections and bags, leaflets, case studies and an easy step-bystep guide on how to use the scheme. Information on waste carriers licences and waste exemptions has also been added. Look out too for the live Twitter feed. Collectors can download leaflets and case studies, plus a training presentation for staff, from a new resource area. An Events page will keep members updated on future Bacon Butty events and trade shows attended by Recofloor, plus of course, the annual Recofloor Awards. Members can enter the Recofloor Awards 2016 for free via the website. Taking a football theme, the Awards ceremony will be held on March 3 at Old Trafford, the Home of Manchester United. Deadline for entries is January 13 2016. Latest announcements will be posted on the Home Page ‘slider’ section, highlighting topics such as upcoming events, seasonal collections or member news. NEWS Playtime for Polyflor Polyflor’s recently relaunched Polysafe Wood fx PUR vinyl safety flooring was chosen to help create a safe, child-friendly environment at the Paper Moon Day Nursery in Woodbeck, Nottinghamshire. The grey toned Silver Oak design from the Polysafe Wood fx PUR collection of sheet vinyl flooring was installed by Clinton Carpets flooring contractors of Retford in the playroom areas of the new nursery. The popular Polysafe Wood fx range now features six new on-trend designs, giving a more contemporary feel to the collection.

Caring in Croydon Polyflor’s wood effect Forest fx PUR vinyl flooring was chosen by Croydon Health Services NHS Trust to create a welcoming dementia-friendly care zone in two reconfigured wards at Croydon University Hospital. Designed by IBI Group, the refurbishment of Croydon University Hospital’s wards involved creating a new environment specifically suited to patients who are admitted to hospital and living with dementia. Installed within a new dementia hub, the subtlety and high clarity replication of timber in the American Oak design helped to create a relaxed ambience. The mid-tone wood flooring design from the Forest fx collection was chosen to contrast appropriately with furniture and wall surfaces, creating a refreshed look that could contribute to less stress and agitation for patients on the ward. The flooring was also installed within ward and circulation areas, activity zones, a quiet room and a sensory zone.

Alison Hill from Paper Moon Day Nursery commented, “We chose Polysafe Wood fx as we needed a practical, hard wearing and slip resistant floorcovering that also looked attractive to help us create a safe environment that the children will enjoy playing and learning in. The fact that it is easy to clean is also a massive bonus for us in terms of the everyday running of the nursery. This flooring has also been installed in a number of our other Paper Moon nurseries across Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.” Polysafe Wood fx is a decorative safety floorcovering available in twelve authentic wood effect designs with in-built sustainable wet slip resistance to reduce the risk of slipping in commercial or residential areas. The vinyl includes virtually invisible aggregates through the performance layer which provide traction and ensure underfoot safety without compromising the high clarity look of the floor. T 0161 767 1111 www.polyflor.com

Polyflor Forest fx is a highly sophisticated and realistic wood effect sheet vinyl flooring which has been specifically developed for use in heavy commercial environments such as hospitals and other specialist care facilities. Available in 14 authentic shades, Forest fx also features a cross-linked and UV cured polyurethane reinforcement (PUR) to provide a low cost, polish-free maintenance regime for the lifetime of the flooring. Quick and easy to install, Polyflor’s vinyl flooring can also be welded at the seams to provide a hygienic surface, offering no sanctuary to dirt and bacteria. Polyflor’s Forest fx flooring contains recycled material and is 100% recyclable via the Recofloor scheme, thereby ensuring the product meets key environmental and sustainability credentials. As a manufacturer of dementiafriendly flooring, Polyflor is a member of local Dementia Action Alliances who are committed to transforming the lives of the 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK. Polyflor is also a longstanding partner of the International Dementia Design Network at the University of Salford. T 0161 767 1111 www.polyflor.com

A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!

This is a true first for the wool carpet industry. You will not find this quantity or quality of wool companies exhibiting in one location at other international shows.

Wool Floor Show London is a sell out!

British Wool Carpet of the Month

The first Wool Floor Show London is a complete sell out! The show (23rd and 24th March) dedicated to the wool flooring sector intends to promote the superior benefits of quality wool for the floor and has the support of all major leading wool brands.

Whitestone Weavers have developed ten stunning tartans for their new Tartanesque quality using 80% British wool and 20% polyamide and also 100% undyed pure new wool. The range has been developed to enhance the new contemporary styles that can now be seen in a lot of interiors here in the U.K, in Europe and also in the U.S.A. Over the last 6 years the growth in tartans and plaids for Whitestone Weavers has been quite considerable and they now stock over 50 stock tartans with Tartanesque being their newest addition. They also manufacture bespoke tartan orders for many of their clients using their Fast Track system in various different qualities and pile heights. Samples of Tartanesque have only recently been put on show but so far sales are extremely encouraging so the beautiful blend of British wool and 100% pure new wool seems to be the way forward.

More than twenty wool carpet manufacturers will exhibit including Brintons, Axminster and Ulster Carpets on the woven side. Tufted manufacturers - Kingsmead, Mr Tomkinson, Cormar, Brockway, Manx and Westex are also on the list as are Crucial Trading, Bronte Carpets, Roger Oates and Jacaranda - just a snapshot of those exhibiting. Chelsea Football Club’s Stamford Bridge is the central London venue and whilst better known for football, it also hosts many top trade events. Its Great Hall has the advantage of having its own entrance and some car parking is available just outside! A key feature will be inspirational wool show case installations - similar to the one displayed at The Flooring Show in Harrogate where the Campaign for Wool has hosted Wool Trends for the last two years. It is the growing interest in the way that this more stylish approach has appealed to retailers and designers that instigated this event. It is intended to create a really vibrant and stylish showcase that empowers the story of wool for the floor. This is a true first for the wool carpet industry, as in one space, the visitor to this event will find the very best offer of wool flooring available - not just in the UK but internationally. You will not find this quantity or quality of wool companies exhibiting in one location at other international shows. The visitor to Wool Floor Show London can really focus their attention on what they need from the wool sector without having to walk around a vast trade event that will not have the level of choice available here. Additional benefits to the visitor - are a seminar programme with the modern carpet business in mind. A designer programme will interest those working with the design community and the launch of the new WoolRetailer.com website which will introduce a fundamental strategy of support for quality retailers and connect those stores with consumers. Wool Floor Show London is undoubtedly a new approach to marketing wool carpet - mirroring the way buyers in fashion like the more intimate approach of dealing with smaller, seasonal shows/collections. This is a trend that is growing in the USA within the flooring sector and it is our belief that this approach will appeal to those retailers and designers focused on quality and good service. Visit woolfloorshowlondon.co.uk for more information and to pre-register.

and why we like it... What a grand name - Tartanesque - it emits something quite fashionista or maybe it sounds like a new emotional mood and as its the fall-out period of Christmas and New Year - we could all feel a tad ‘Tartanesque‘! But joking aside,Whitestone Weavers have created a modern range that tones down or tones up the powerful style of tartan plaid in carpet almost like a volume control. The customer can go bespoke or select from a stunning selection that will fit the contemporary space and undoubtedly be the star attraction. Whitestone Weavers has instigated a new era for tartan - Well done!

NEWS Hue go, they follow! Trend setting Adam Carpets have achieved endorsement for their fashion statement colours with the announcement of the ‘Colours of 2016’ by international experts at the Pantone Color Institute.

‘Wonder of nature’ Fresh from their success at Harrogate, the Wool Carpet Focus Group is busy banging the drum for their campaign with a new POS leaflet and website. Promoting the key theme of “bouncebackability” and “cleanability”, the wool people have produced 10,000 copies of the “It’s cool to buy wool #naturally” leaflet for distribution to consumers via retailers. As well as selling benefits, the leaflet and the website are keen to set out the science that underpins the unique properties of natural fibre for carpet making and describes how wool is “a complex wonder of nature.”

The colour gurus picked pale pink and baby blue as their top choices – or as they put it “a warmer, embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue” and noted a “nod to gender equality” in the choice. All this reflects well on the eye-catching launch of the new colours in Adam’s Fine Worcester Twist range last year which the company characterised with their Hugo and Ella personalities that reflected the two different tonal approaches to colour. “It was fantastic to see colour experts and trend predictors 'Pantone' launching their new colours for 2016 with just a hint of Hugo and Ella about them, “ says Eamonn Prescott of Adam Carpets. “This is the first time that Pantone has announced two colours of the year, once again reflecting the 'his and hers' that we demonstrated with Hugo and Ella.” T 01562 829966 www.adamcarpets.co.uk

Open for business Demand for Ulster Carpets' Open Spaces Collection continues to grow with consumers responding enthusiastically to its contemporary look and the inherent warmth and durability of a 100% wool carpet. The Collection now comprises eight stunning ranges, each with their own unique colour bank and style. The Dubai range has been updated for 2016 with the addition of six new colours including cool urban greys and artic neutral tones, which boast a versatility indicative of this loop pile range. These liveable colours of 'Echo', 'Glaze', 'Polar', 'Cane', 'Alpine' and 'Tor', provide effortless sophistication and sit perfectly within any interior space. T 02838 334433 www.ulsterscarpets.com

The Wool Carpet Focus Group (WFCG) was founded last Summer by the Curtis Wool Direct Company with key manufacturers including Kingsmead and Whitestone Weavers and now works will all the major wool houses in the UK and with the British Wool Marketing Board. “The show at Harrogate was a major success for us and we have had a great reaction to the campaign,” says Martin Curtis of the WCFG. “The science of wool leaflet has gone down very well and we have found that a simple, clear and unambiguous message hits home with salespeople and the consumer.” At the core of the campaign is that wool is as cleanable as polypropylene in many cases and out-performs in key areas such as comfort, sustainability, inflammability and appearance retention. The Group is meeting with its sponsors to plan the campaign for 2016 so stand by for more sheep wearing shades! www.woolcarpetsnaturally.org

Coming together in Germany will mean that we can offer an even wider product portfolio and choices to our customers, incorporating higher design flooring and hygienic walling systems. With increased levels of support and wider availability of local stock, we believe this will provide an enhanced customer experience,” he said. NEWS Keeping faith with contractors A range of high performance floor preparation products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used to create a stunning new floor at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Pyrford, Surrey. Contractors initially used Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane to impede the passage of rising moisture from the ground, before applying Stopgap 600 Base and Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayments to raise and level the surface. New linoleum tiles were then installed using Styccobond F54 emulsion adhesive. Contractors from Progressive Flooring were first called to the Church of the Good Shepherd as the existing asphalt flooring, which ran throughout the church’s ground floor, was beginning to crumble through years of wear and tear. After taking up the existing floorcoverings and removing the asphalt subfloor, the contractors conducted relative humidity tests and found that a waterproof surface membrane was required to protect the new installation from moisture damage. They applied a single coat of F. Ball’s Stopgap F77 high performance waterproof surface membrane, effectively guarding against moisture damage up to relative humidity values of 98%. The substrate was then primed using F. Ball’s Stopgap P131 general purpose primer, ensuring a good bond with the subsequent application of a smoothing underlayment. In order to raise the floor levels, contractors applied 15mm of Stopgap 600 Base. This specialist deep section compound from F. Ball has been specifically designed for when floor levels need to be raised quickly and economically in light to heavy-duty applications. It can be installed in thicknesses from 5-50mm in a single application, and can be ready to receive floor smoothing compounds from just 90 minutes. In order to create a perfectly smooth surface for the new floorcoverings, Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayment was then applied directly onto the newly raised subfloor. Stopgap 1200 Pro is a high performance, rapid setting, protein-free smoothing underlayment designed for use over a wide range of subfloor types. It can be applied in thicknesses from 2-10mm, and is ready to receive new floorcoverings from as little as four hours. Finally, contractors used F. Balls Styccobond F54 linoleum adhesive to install the new modular linoleum tiles which, when completed, formed an image of the cross on the floor of the church. F54 is a solvent-free emulsion adhesive designed to provide a high initial grab. It is protected against biodegradation, and can be used for securing a wide range of linoleum floorcoverings. NEWS India calls on WoolSafe The WoolSafe Organisation has been entrusted by The Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT) to develop and deliver a comprehensive training course in wool carpet maintenance. IICT, based in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, right in the heart of India’s carpet belt, provides graduate courses in carpet manufacture, fibre and carpet technology, and testing. Realising the importance of correct maintenance, the Institute wanted to provide its students with the best available knowledge on the subject, and hence called in the services of The WoolSafe Academy to provide just that. The education and training branch of the internationally respected WoolSafe Organisation, The WoolSafe Academy, has been proud to promote high quality wool carpet cleaning practice across the UK for some time; and with courses being extended to foreign shores such as the United States, Europe, Australia and now India. IICT was impressed with the WoolSafe Academy’s online offering, and having secured funding from the Indian Ministry for Handicraft, a seven-day comprehensive training course was offered to their 25 best students as well as local businessmen, carpet manufacturers and suppliers. The course itself was a huge success, delivered by Dr Agnes Zsednai, WoolSafe MD, and Adam Jankowski, WoolSafe Certified Tutor; it covered all aspects of carpet maintenance from basic planning and soiling prevention through the principles of cleaning to spot removal and to different cleaning methods. F Ball’s biggest book F. Ball releases the biggest ever version of its comprehensive Recommended Adhesives Guide (RAG) this month featuring over 6,000 up-to-date adhesive recommendations for floorcoverings, and endorsed by over 200 leading international manufacturers - the RAG is the flooring industry’s most trusted guide to adhesives and floorcovering compatibility. F. Ball Loyalty Card holders will receive a complimentary copy of the RAG and contractors who do not have the Card can request a free copy of the A5 book via phone, email, or social media. The RAG is also available as an interactive, searchable version on the F. Ball website, and as a free app via the Apple and Google app stores, enabling contractors to search the RAG even when out on site. Commenting on the new RAG, F. Ball’s Marketing Manager, Richard Harris, said: “Time is money for modern flooring contractors. Using the wrong flooring adhesive can often result in costly and time consuming remedial work. In worst-case scenarios, using an adhesive that is not compatible with a floorcovering type could result in total floor failure. The RAG allows contractors to specify the best adhesive for each setting and floorcovering from the outset.” T 01538 361633 www.f-ball.co.uk 38 January 2016

READERS’ SURVEY

Retailers are going for growth in 2016

86%

The ‘feel-good’ factor returns with increased trade

83%

Retailers reported a strong performance at the end of 2015 and most are looking forward to a happy new year in our annual survey of business prospects. A reassuring 86% of respondents said 2015 outperformed the previous year with 29% adding that it was much better. Asked if their last quarter’s trading had met expectations, about a third said it had but a further 41% said it had exceeded their budgets for the busy pre-Christmas trading period. Looking for that happy new year, a healthy 83% are reckoning on sales increases with nearly a third saying they are hoping for growth in excess of 10%. Breaking down the details for the 2015 end-of-year report, only 11% said they thought consumer confidence was still fragile. 52% described the mood as cautious optimism and a further 37% were seeing a more positive feeling. “There is much more of a feel-good factor,” said a North East retailer. “We saw this at Harrogate and it transferred immediately to the marketplace.” An interesting feature of the survey results was that while more than half of retailers said they had not increased prices in 2015, an encouraging 62% said that they have enjoyed more opportunities to trade up customers to better products. Wool seems to have been the beneficiary of the improving picture with 52% of retailers reporting the fibre as their biggest growing sector. Wood and laminate sales appeared to have been relatively flat while good growth was reported in the LVT sector. We asked about trends generally that people said were strong and among the predictable demand for grey colours and wool loop, an interesting increase in the issue of recycling was also apparent. We all know that there is no easy business out there. More than 40% of our sample said they were under growing pressure to discount. “Customers are still expecting us to do un-do-able deals. They read in the media a few years ago that retailers were desperate for their custom, and still think we will jump through hoops to get any business,” said a London reader. “Customers want to pay internet prices but demand a retail service,” said a Hampshire retailer. An increase in the “compensation culture” with an increasing number of frivolous claims was also noted by several respondents. But given the optimism for 2016, 38% of our retailers said they’d be putting up prices this year a little and a further 11% plan to increase prices by more than 5%. However, their expectation is that manufacturers will help them – 81% expected no major increases from suppliers in 2016. In the comments left by our respondents though, retailers are looking for greater support from manufacturers. “Suppliers are opening more and more accounts on the same high street with no consideration for retailers who have supported them over the years,” said one. “Suppliers it seems don't have to invest time and effort in traders anymore and give accounts to anybody,” said another and a Derbyshire retailer condemned suppliers who sold to “Facebook fitters.” Finally, a word of advice from a retailer on the South Coast: “If competitors want to learn more about the industry they claim to be specialists in, they just need to talk to my know-all customers who spend five minutes on the net and become instant experts.” Ouch!

Positive on UK prospects Geert Vanden Bossche, Marketing Director of Balta Group, is an expert commentator on the UK market from his vantage point in Europe: “We enter 2016 with a real sense of optimism as the outlook for the global economy appears to be increasingly positive. The UK consumer continues to display all the hallmarks of growing confidence, and with an improving housing market, all the key signs are there for a successful 2016. “Next year will be an exciting time for Balta Broadloom as the recently introduced Satino Collection makes its mark on the High Street. Towards the second half of 2015 we saw a shift in consumer demand for soft and shiny products, and with it a revival in soft nylon carpets. “This improved confidence can also be seen across other collections. For example, we have noticed an increase in demand for better quality products from our Stainsafe bleach cleanable polypropylene collections. We can therefore conclude that homeowners, while still looking for great value, appear to be more willing to spend a little more for that improvement in quality which can only be good news for coming 12 months.”

Matt will kick off proceedings with anecdotes from his sporting career before introducing key speakers from the flooring industry. Delegates will hear how the scheme, founded in 2009 by leading flooring manufacturers Polyflor and Altro, works with the supply chain to divert vinyl flooring waste from landfill – more than 2,700 tonnes to date. Material collected by Recofloor’s 650-plus membership is recycled back into products, including new flooring, which benefits the environment and can reduce collectors’ waste disposal costs by up to 70%. Matt will present trophies and certificates to Recofloor members who have excelled across eight award categories and contributed to increasing volumes of vinyl flooring waste being diverted from landfill. Members can enter any of the following categories; Contractor of the Year, Distributor of the Year, Construction Project of the Year, Recofloor Champion and Drop-Off Site User of the Year. The deadline for entries is Wednesday January 13th 2016. T 0161 355 7618 www.recofloor.org 52 January 2016

Flower on Flooring by Dennis Flower

Clean bill of health for flooring With the recent extreme weather conditions in Scotland and Northern England and ongoing clean-up operation likely to continue for some time, flooring retailers have been reminded of the assistance they can provide in times of need. While flood-damaged flooring can only be thrown away, providing retailers with the opportunity to offer their main service in the supply of suitable replacements, every flooring option needs to be kept clean to keep it looking its best and allows the retail sector to assist, while benefiting from valuable add-on sales. Bearing this in mind, Sebo has launched its E range of five cylinder vacuum cleaners, available in a selection of colours, which it describes as "exceptionally quiet", due to extremely smooth internal air ways, with "excellent suction power". Features include a retractable cable that winds in at the touch of a button, an airbelt bumper to protect walls and furniture, plus an intelligent motor that senses overheating and turns the motor down accordingly. All models have easy-glide castors and a selection of on-board tools, while S-Class filtration keeps dust and particles locked inside. With a generous 3.5ltr bag and 10.8m cleaning range, the E series also includes a model for lifting pet hair more efficiently. Prices start from £199.95 for the entry-level model. Intec describes its carpet and fabric protector as a topical application to prevent carpets and furnishing fabrics from staining, while making them easier to clean. It is a water-based, environmentally friendly product that dries in 30 minutes. It needs to be applied just once and its proven efficiency remains even after repeated cleaning of the carpet, the company states. "Suitable for all carpet types, particularly natural floorings, Intec is the perfect add on sale,

“The most important issue for carpet owners is how the carpet will respond to what modern living will throw at it. Will it keep looking good, or will its appearance deteriorate?” once the customer has decided to purchase a new carpet," the statement continues. Customers can protect their investment with a product that will prolong the enjoyment of the item. "The wholesaler or retailer has little extra work to apply or have Intec applied. A short sales interaction with the existent client will give him a very interesting profit margin for this easy add on sale," the company concludes. Woolsafe discusses whether wool or synthetic carpet is easier to clean, a continuing long-running debate. Marketing manager Steve Bakker says polypropylene and nylon with polypropylene are most favoured for use in domestic installations. Explaining the difference between maintenance and spot removal, comparing these with natural wool, he also considers different carpet fibres appearance retention over its lifecycle. "The most important issue for carpet owners is how the carpet will respond to what modern living will throw at it. Will it keep looking good, or will its appearance deteriorate?" he asks. While polypropylene is almost impossible to stain with water-based staining materials, because it does not absorb water, it does not resist oily or greasy stains very well. Polypropylene also lacks the resilience of wool and the carpet tends to flatten relatively quickly, Mr Bakker continues, and the shiny lustre of synthetic carpet soon dulls due to the abrading and scratching of the fibre when exposed to regular wear and tear. "Wool carpets are well-known for their long-lasting good appearance, based on their excellent 'bouncebackability', great response to cleaning – both dry and wet – and resistance to soiling and therefore retention of colour," he continues. While staining can be an issue when stains are left to soak in, spills attended to promptly – and expertly – seldom lead to problems. "Wool carpets just have that great reputation for longevity that other fibres seem to lack," says Mr Bakker. Synthetic fibres, while initially responding well to cleaning, over time seem to clean less easily. The reason is that as the fibres get damaged the little cracks and fissures that develop can trap dirt and spillages which then become "almost impossible" to get out. Brit shipper shuts down The closure of carpet operations at key UK carpet shipper Brit European Transport was bad tidings for pre-Christmas trading and the company blamed manufacturers for “pushing too hard” on prices as a factor which forced the company’s decision.

‘Cosy carpet’ scoop! ‘Top of the pile’ was the headline over an image of Brockway’s Beachcomber making front page news in the Home section of the Sunday Times in a remarkable coup for the carpet industry just before Christmas. “Draughty wooden floors are losing ground to cosy carpets,” said journalist Katrina Burroughs. “If you have moved house in the past 20 years, you have probably been living with horrible acoustics, draughty ankles and dust. “Natural wood has been the aspirational floor covering of choice for a generation but an increasing number of homeowners are saying enough is enough – and carpet is gaining much of the territory previously assigned to timber,” she said. To illustrate the point, roomsets were showcased from suppliers including Brockway, Alternative Flooring, Cormar, Crucial Trading, Brintons, Flock and Ulster Carpets. The report said “carpet love has skipped a generation” and suggested newcomers to home design should check out the Carpet Foundation website for information and recommended Foundation retailers as the people to buy carpet from. Rupert Anton of the Foundation, said: “The article was quite a result for us and for carpet. Such high profile and ‘on message’ editorial exposure for carpet in a national newspaper is unprecedented. It was the perfect way to sign off for 2015.” The journalist told readers that carpet could be laid in almost any room in the house and suggested they waited until after the hectic Christmas sales season to get the best deal from carpet stores in the new year. So stand by for a rush of Sunday Times readers!

Brit European’s carpet distribution division delivered to around half the independent flooring retailers and wholesalers across the UK, as well as major groups including Carpetright. Its 8,000m² warehouse in Zeebrugge had capacity for up to 5000 rolls of carpet and 1500 pallets. The company pulled out of carpets in November at the height of the busiest sales season citing “unsustainable” delivery rates, high employment costs, foreign exchange pressures and European red tape. Brit European Transport took over carpet distribution from its struggling Belgian sister company, Brit European Transport NV, in 2014. Managing Director Graham Lackey told Motor transport magazine that the company had struggled for four years, adding that market pressures including falling volumes, low delivery rates, high employment costs in Belgium, the cost of cabbotage and a weak euro had “led to crunch customer discussions as costs continued to increase against static market rate”. Mr Lackey added: “It is a disappointing and sad outcome but one which highlights the challenges of operating across borders with differing interpretation of what is in theory common European legislation. It also highlights the dangers of manufacturers pushing rates for specialist transport providers too hard.” The company warned in its recent annual results for 2014 that although it was trying to turn the business around, it was struggling to reduce overheads in staff and management because European employment law made it “a very slow and costly process.” Crewe-based Brit European Transport’s mainstream business is in automotive, construction equipment, bulk chemicals and fuels and these activities are unaffected by the closure of the Belgium business.

Crushing costs Dave Hudspeth Carpets based in Leyburn North Yorkshire are one of the latest flooring companies to take delivery of a Kenburn “carpet crusher” for recycling their carpet and underlay waste. For over forty years Dave Hudspeth Carpets has been renowned for providing exceptional personal service to both their retail and commercial customers. Dave Hudspeth’s director Emma Hudspeth comments, “due to the large volumes of flooring we install it’s inevitable that our fitters will uplift hundreds of square metres of post-consumer carpet and underlay waste every week.”

carpet underlay

“Reducing our waste management costs by recycling old carpet and underlay waste was of course a bonus but our decision to install a “carpet crusher” was primarily to enable us to have a zero waste to landfill policy and diverting hundreds of tonnes a year of recyclable carpet and underlay waste from landfill makes environmental sense. It’s also an interesting topic of discussion with our customers explaining how we now recycle their old carpet and underlay using it as a fuel for “waste to energy” and with recycling waste carpet costing considerably less than landfill it makes financial sense as well.”

When what you really really want is a strong selling good all-round domestic underlay which delivers a healthy margin Graphite is the way to go!. Graphite is a fine, robust, utility underlay representing superb value for money and which is already a firm favourite with many Retailers and Distributors throughout UK and Ireland.

Flooring Factsheet Adhesives

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

britishwool.org.uk

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

www.flooringone.co.uk Contact: Glenn Harding Tel: 0121 683 1426 glenn.harding@flooringone.co.uk

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 60

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.interfloor.com

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

www.interfloor.com

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

62

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.
