Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED
WOVEN
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.
Level loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.
CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.
Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.
Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.
Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.
BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.
Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the

Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves.

Regular Maintenance Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur. Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers! Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet. Use only WOOLSAFE approved products WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.
The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.
Periodic Cleaning When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company. If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE approved products. Look for the WOOLSAFE Mark on the bottle or package. It is best to engage the services of a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning company. To get a really expert job done entrust the work to a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. These companies are fully trained, have been in business for a considerable length of time, are members of one or more recognised professional trade associations related to the cleaning industry and have a reputation for top quality service. And they use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents on your wool carpets and rugs!
If you have a problem with a carpet or rug that requires an independent inspector, a network of carpet complaint investigators, trained and registered by The WOOLSAFE Organisation is available throughout the UK and Ireland. WOOLSAFE Registered Inspectors have extensive experience in investigating the causes for carpet complaints based on their practical involvement with carpets and rugs over many years. They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers, retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can carry out or commission tests where required, and will provide comprehensive reports. Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member •
Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see what you would actually use

Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Increase sales
• ‘Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support
Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with point-of-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Access professional services

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.floorwise.co.uk
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.
www.numa-online.co.uk
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
Poor or old underlay will...
• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre THE BEST CARPET WOOL Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home. THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years. Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
SAFE
DURABLE
Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer. Safety Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly. Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites. Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING
SPROUTING
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
SAMPLES The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.
SHEDDING The original carpet tile
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
PULLED LOOPS
This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.
12
• shedding • pulled loops
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
SHADING
STATIC Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.
FADING ON WOOL Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

PILE REVERSAL
FLATTENING
(SEE SHADING)
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
INDENTATIONS When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
SOILING Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or
any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave
sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

THANKS AGAIN!
And thanks to all of our customers for your patience, following our new computer system switch over, which finally took place in the middle of last month. Glitches with such events are inevitable, however hard we try to prevent them. And those of you with long memories will recall we had originally thought this would happen at the end of last year, but head office understandably preferred to wait until they were happy it was all systems go!

Best-selling products at every price point As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality – a partnership that retailers can rely on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will respond to. Furlong’s wholly-owned manufacturing company, Regency Carpets, is one of the UK’s top three tufters with a modern plant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland. A long-term programme of substantial investment has created a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully on line. As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors – stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and many others. Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing also means they can manage stock more closely and respond to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready for dispatch.
Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across three depots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicated fleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usually within 24 hours. Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio of products matched to the diverse needs of different customer groups, rooms styles and performance requirements. Regency’s stain-resistant ranges use their own ‘Carefree’ fibre which is bleach cleanable and offered with a warranty for absolute confidence. New ranges are introduced several times a year to keep the offering fresh and interesting and respond to consumer trends and colour shifts.
the aim is simply to offer customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality Furlong have paid particular attention to the presentation of their product range to consumers with market-leading point-of-sale systems incorporating the latest video technology. Furlong believes in working in partnership with their customers to provide products and services that ticks all the boxes.

FlooringNews Plains and simple stripes Cormar is re-launching its popular Avebury wool loop pile collection with an updated colour choice and selection of complementary stripes. Originally launched in 2009, this Woolmark branded range has enjoyed considerable success with interior design-led retailers. Now Cormar intends to widen the appeal by offering five co-ordinating neutral based stripes to the collection. Made from 100% pure new wool in a quality 3 ply yarn with a level loop pile surface, the new Avebury Stripe range offers five striped designs and 12 stylish plains in 4 and 5 metre widths that can be teamed together to accommodate the trend for a streamlined look in the home. “In the same way that beiges and neutrals have dominated the residential cut pile carpet market over the last ten years, we believe that the Avebury Collection now offers consumers a new and different look that is still within the confines of an ‘easy to decorate with’ colour palette,” says David Cormack at Cormar Carpets. All Cormar’s loop pile, wool twist and easy clean ranges are produced on site at its Lancashire mills and distributed in the UK and Eire via its own delivery fleet. Floral for all Capturing subtle tone-on-tone and high contrast floral designs, Sandringham Wilton is the latest quality carpet collection from Balta. A total of six traditional designs, available in five colourways, make up the collection that will replace the existing Wellington range. Conceived by the in-house design team in cooperation with UK-based designer Ian Wallace, Sandringham Wilton has extra depth to its designs thanks to its six frame weave that allows the introduction of an additional colour over conventional five frame wilton carpets. Manufactured from 100% Stainsafe polypropylene and rated for Heavy Domestic Use, the four-metre wide Sandringham Wilton is ideal for use in all areas of the home, providing a low maintenance and hardwearing carpet that can be cleaned with diluted bleach. With a 1320g/m2 pile weight, the carpet has a substantial quality feel and this makes it ideal for consumers looking for luxurious patterned carpet that also provides exceptional value. “Sandringham Wilton brings traditional style and enduring quality at a price point that opens up new areas of opportunity for retailers. This new range provides an excellent chance to capitalise on the consumer’s thirst for great value carpets that don’t compromise on style,” comments Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Broadloom. Sandringham Wilton is now available through quality UK retailers and wholesale and is supported by quality 22x22" sample books. T +32 56 62 22 11

Pick a pepper With a beautiful tri-coloured yarn, Supreme Elegance and Fairfield Supreme from Lano Carpets, have a delicious salt and pepper effect that separates them from other stain resistant ranges. Since its launch in March 2010, the 1/10th gauge Fairfield Supreme has become the most popular high-end polypropylene carpet within the Easy Care collection, with its luxurious heatset yarn providing a carpet that is not only practical, but beautiful and soft to touch. Available in 14 fashionable multi-coloured shades, Supreme Elegance is Lano’s top stain resistant shaggy and as part of the Easy Care collection the carpet benefits from a 10-year stain resistant warranty and is bleach cleanable, action backed and in a four-metre width, “Both Supreme Elegance and Fairfield Supreme benefit from a beautiful tri-tone yarn that provides extra visual texture and gives them a unique position in-store,” says Birger Karlsson, UK and Ireland sales manager. Flash and funky Balta, reports that wall-to-wall carpets with stripes are “totally hot” and says their popularity is still growing. Stripes are funky and fashionable, especially when they are co-ordinated with plain carpet. Balta striped carpets are available in several different styles and formats: Funky Stripes is a new affordable Balta collection that is easy to maintain. These carpets come in eight young flashy colours and cute stripe combinations which give the children’s bedroom an inspiring refreshment. The carpets are Stainsafe and even bleach cleanable. The Nobility collection is a more tonal and rural colour range. The stripes in beautiful shades of white, beige, brown and black are a perfect fit for the modern furniture in a stylish living room. The Nobility carpets open up a room because of their wider stripes, which also makes it ideal to use in halls and on staircases. The flat woven ‘Pure’ collection has two striped patterns: ‘Trend’ and ‘Retro’. Both patterns are Weathersafe and therefore fit any indoor and outdoor space. During a sunny spring or summer day you can enhance the garden, terrace or balcony with it, and it’s also safe next to the swimming pool. The Balta ‘Pubs & Clubs’ collection ‘Stainsafe Super Wiltax’ for commercial use consists of beautiful broadloom carpets with fine lines which are the perfect example how stripes also can look impressive in commercial use such as hotel corridors, lobbies, bedrooms and bars. Up and under Independent carpet producer Whitestone Weavers offers consumers a double whammy with the re-launch of a flagship Best-of-British range and the introduction of its first ever collection of underlays. The re-coloured Durham Twist collection will appeal to consumers who want to ‘Buy British’ while those looking for a natural, environmentally sound underlay will find it with the brand new MacFelt range. The company’s hugely successful Durham Twist range – sold under the Hugh Mackay badge and available in 40oz, 50oz and 60oz weights – has been re-coloured and now boasts a 40-strong colour palette, double the previous offer. As well as a strong bank of neutrals, the new-look collection provides a strong colour offer with contemporary shades of amethyst, duck egg blue, vivid greens and rich morello. Said Phil Hartley, sales director for Whitestone Weavers:, “Durham Twist is among Whitestone’s flagship collections thanks to its strong British provenance. Made in Yorkshire, using British wool, it is a proven quality at a competitive price point.” Durham Twist is available in 4m and 5m widths and made from 80% British wool and 20% nylon blend. Brand new to the Whitestone portfolio but offering a traditional favourite to the consumer is the company’s new MacFelt brand of underlay. Made using recycled material from carpet manufacturers, the MacFelt offer comprises MacFelt 33, MacFelt 42 and MacFelt Combi, the latter with a crumb rubber backing made from old car tyres. Said Phil Hartley: “Our new underlay range has excellent environmental credentials. As well as being made from recycled materials, the felt itself is a very traditional, needled fibre product made from natural wool, cotton, jute and hair. “This type of more natural underlay is coming back in to favour, not only with traditionalists but among consumers looking for a product that offers the re-use of resources and a natural content. It also works especially well with wool and jute-backed products.” T 01429 892540

Interfloor Grows Interfloor have just reported an increase in sales this year, based on an expansion of both underlay and flooring accessories. Gary Cowley, Interfloor’s sales director, commented, “We’ve seen a sustained and dramatic improvement in our PU sales since the introduction of our new production line. Retail, wholesale and contract customers have been responding very favourably and they seem to value the quality and performance of our new PU products. We’re also delighted at the growth in sales of our premium sponge rubber and crumb rubber underlays. On top of that we’ve seen a continued improvement in both gripper and metal profiles.” This news came shortly after Interfloor announced three new ultra high density (145 kg/m3) PU underlays into their growing range. Tredaire Contract 7 is a 7mm thick underlay with orange facing film and Tredaire Contract 9 is a 9mm thick underlay with violet facing film. Both have been designed for double stick applications but can also be stretch fitted. Tredaire Sensation is an 11mm thick underlay with green facing film and has been developed for the residential market where superior durability is required. All three products come with high performance, printed, Textron backings. This brings the stable of Tredaire PU underlays to eight but Interfloor manufactures over 25 PU underlays for the UK market. Gary Cowley, Interfloor’s sales director, says “These new products will give extra momentum to our sales growth and we’re well on our way to becoming the UK market leader in PU underlay. Our Tredaire Seventh Heaven PU range has consistently broken both sales and production records as customers have switched from competitor brands. It’s not unusual to see 50% plus growth Gary Cowley, Sales Director. rates on our higher specification sponge and crumb rubber underlays. It appears that many retailers are now adopting a portfolio approach to their underlay purchases by combining sponge, crumb and PU.” Interfloor have seen rubber underlay growth in four product segments: luxury sponge underlays (such as Tredaire Colours Red); hard wearing crumb underlays (such as Duralay System 10 and Treadmore); specialist underlays (like Duralay Heatflow for underfloor heating and Timbermate Excel for wood and laminate floors); and, contract quality crumb underlays such as the Duralay Durafit range. “In each of these segments we have market leading products which offer performance benefits that competitor products can’t match. Customers value that.”
So why would this trend emerge now? Cowley explains, “I think we’ve learned an important lesson about communication. We’ve increased our trade marketing activity significantly in the last 12 months, including advertising, direct mail, sales tools and sales promotions. In particular we’ve worked hard at developing a proposition that helps retailers to sell. This applies to all product segments but for rubber underlay it’s about leveraging its innate advantages. Consumers prefer rubber underlay, the best products outperform everything else and it’s easier to up-sell them. The results speak for themselves. We now have more customers buying rubber underlay and we’re getting outstanding sales growth from the best rubber products.” In the future Interfloor expects more customers to adopt a portfolio approach combining sponge, crumb and PU underlay.
“we have market leading products… that competitor products can’t match.” “Our policy is to provide whatever type of underlay our customers need. I think we’re in a unique position because we can offer each of the three main types. Our sales team are trained to understand the customers’ needs and then recommend the best product solution….whatever it’s made of. Some suppliers can’t do this and there can be a tendency to recommend what the supplier wants you to buy rather than what’s best for the customer.” Interfloor are also experiencing growth in flooring accessories too. Sales of their Gripperrods branded carpet gripper and Stikatak metal profiles are up over 15%. As Gary Cowley says, “This is where our one stop shop concept really adds value. The market continues to be tight so we’re finding an increasing number of customers who prefer to consolidate their business into the suppliers they can rely upon.” T 01706 213 131

Signature styling Milliken & Company has unveiled the metamorphosis of its corporate identity, positioning itself to bring leadership to innovation around the globe and building on its successful 150-year company history. As part of this new identity, a fresh new logo based on the signature of the company’s 70-year leader and former chairman, the late Mr Roger Milliken, has been revealed uniting each division of the global speciality chemicals, floorcovering and performance materials manufacturer. The new logo is simple, playful and bold, and signals a continuing commitment to excellence, leadership, ethics and creativity. It also reinforces the message of the common vision that runs throughout all of the company’s divisions, including floorcoverings.
Crowning glory With the most regal name in the UK carpet industry, it comes as little surprise that Crown Floors says it is providing retailers with ‘majestic’ levels of point of sale and marketing support, helping to reinforce the brand’s unique selling points and strong identity. With 10 ranges specifically developed for independent UK carpet retailers, the heart of in-store presence for Crown Floors is a striking display unit that can accommodate back-to-back, wall and island layouts. The display has been designed to be visually striking, practical, easy to use and compact, helping retailers to maximise the potential of any floor space given to the brand. Each range features on an individual unit, with selected colours and styles shown in ordered feeler samples, and all colours featuring on hangers below. Each unit features fresh home lifestyle imagery with symbols depicting each carpet’s key attributes. Retailers can also opt for an additional information panel that explains the concept behind the brand created by Alexander Thorpe and features point-of-sale leaflets. These leaflets consist of maintenance advice and explanatory guidance on the symbols used and helps to reinforce the Crown Floors brand to consumers. Other point-of-sale include mats, posters and ‘appointed dealer’ window stickers. Designed to improve consumer recognition of the brand, these additional materials will benefit the retailer with a strong sense of identity for the collections. “Being successful in-store is a combination of great products and a great brand with a story behind it,” says James Caldwell, Crown Floors sales coordinator. “With Crown Floors we are not only providing great carpets, but also the support expected of a premium brand all while delivering excellent value in each and every range. Not only will Crown Floors stand out from the competition for value focused carpets that deliver style in abundance, but also a strong brand that will strike a chord with homeowners time after time.” T 0800 0773301

Wherever it appears the signature serves as a mark of commitment to the values that the late Roger Milliken believed in, it represents a clear indication of the highest levels of quality, environmental excellence and another step towards Milliken’s vision of the future. The new corporate identity supports the overall goal to serve as a true design partner to the architectural and design community. Over the past 18 months, Milliken has created a variety of activities that support this vision including the launch of the designer-centric www.inspiredinspiring.com website, a state-ofthe-art design centre at its US headquarters in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and continued new product launches that bring meaningful experiences to interior environments. “We consider what our clients need and what they want, which goes far beyond creating exceptional products,” explains Alison Kitchingman, Marketing Communications Director of Milliken. “This philosophy allows us to provide inspiration for projects, insights on trends and access to patented technologies – all the tools that help designers and architects to be more successful. We aim to inspire as well as be inspired by what is around us.” With a commitment to innovation and a renewed focus on a fresh approach to problem solving, the new identity represents part of an on-going evolution for Milliken and is the result of more than two years research and planning. Red, white and blue - and black Packexe has re-designed POS and product literature with increased focus on uses and benefits. Packexe self-adhesive protection films are high-performance, transparent films that grip securely to the protected surface but peel away after use without leaving a sticky residue. All films in the Packexe range have colour-coded branding to help you select the right product to match the surface. Existing protection methods, from dust-sheets to plastic or paper sheeting all have severe limitations in both effectiveness and safety. Packexe films address these problems head-on, providing a quickly installed, leak-proof and slip-resistant protection system. In addition to these benefits all films are fully recyclable with a European Fire Safety Standard of EN 13501-1. Packexe films are ideal for, but not exclusive to: flooring installations; interior designers; office and retail renovations; conference and hospitality organisers; and painters and decorators. The ultimate temporary protection for floors and surfaces, retailers select the roll colour to match the surface to be protected: red for carpet, black for hardfloor. Also available in the Packexe film range is blue for glass and glazing, and grey for multi-surface. T 01392 438191 www.packexe.co.uk

Where there has been recent development in colour and entry-level synthetics. The launch of the Spectrum range is a bid to brighten up the business. “We all know beige sells but I am very keen to get more colour into the market,” says Glenn. The move towards synthetics reflects prevailing market trends. “I am concerned about the wool prices and the effect they are having on the popularity of some established products ,” says Glenn. “We have to face the new realities and be pragmatic. We have introduced a 50/50 wool twist and five new ranges in polypropylene twists and saxonies and had a very good reaction to them from members.” The own label 50/50 wool blend is Shetland Heathers Elite which retails below £20, compared to the nearest 80/20 at £23.99. The synthetic ranges include Sensuous – a synthetic 50oz shaggy – and Tetbury – a semi-shaggy in multi-width and two qualities with an exciting colourbank including a striking new raspberry shade. Desire is an entry-level saxony in 4 and 5 metres which allows a choice of backing including felt. On the merchandising side, two tombolas have been updated to work harder for retailers – the ‘invincible’ tombola which presents ranges from Abingdon including new patterned wilton and carved ranges – and the Ulster tombola which has been very successful with over 100 samples including the latest launches as well as established best-sellers.

Associated Weavers Associated Weavers have commissioned a new machine that “makes polypropylene more interesting”, says MD Steve Elliott. By feeding three yarns to the needle, AW can now make a unique, textured-look carpet that feels denser but without the added cost – and bring some clever colour combinations to the cloth. This technology’s debut is New Mood, a super soft shaggy for every room in the house and the company aims to add to the range of products using this new structure during the year. AW also showed Cashmere Textures in two designs, Lorne and Moray, and six colours in 100% wool with 15% cashmere for softness which goes out this month and Staingard Saxony, a very dense PP carpet with an adventurous colour bank including a striking white. Adam Adam Carpets is one of the industry’s best kept secrets but plans to make a little more noise now that Eamonn Prescott (pictured above right with MD Chris Adam) has joined the Kidderminster business as sales and marketing director from Bond Worth. Colour is a strong feature and Eamonn says that out of its top ten selling items, only two are beige. Adam makes all their products in Kidderminster and is the only UK manufacturer to make carpet using over tufting machines where the pattern is punched through a plain background. Two fine examples of the art were launched at Solihull in the Catherine and Boulevard ranges where the finest 80/20 two-ply yarns are used to create a tufted carpet than feels woven with an almost textured pattern effect. Mohawk Mohawk is making the running with its new SmartStrand ‘natural’ synthetic fibre part made from corn sugar and Ricko the Rhino is adding weight to their argument. Mohawk’s amazing video of a zoo’s rhino enclosure carpeted in SmartStrand and then successfully cleaned up has become legendary on the internet and featured on a CD in The Stocklists last month. Now Rico has made it onto video lecterns which will be rolling out to retailers in substantial numbers this Summer – featuring 5 current SmartStrand ranges. “Everything is going at a hell of a pace,” says Mohawk’s Howard Lindsay. “In the US, this is killing all other fibre. Mohawk is an exciting place to be right now,” he says. T 01480 479830 www.themohawkgroup.com
Abingdon Abingdon celebrated a right royal spring with the launch of their compact Crown Jewels lectern stand with the collection’s five ranges – from entry level Prince to the posher Royale and Majesty. “There are good price points all the way along,” says Abingdon’s Jim Taylor, “and you can deliver a lot of carpet in a very small footprint.” Also on show to many for the first time, is Abingdon’s impressive new wall units. “We have had a very positive reaction to it,” says Jim. “It’s very flexible and you can see all the colours straight away and it is not just a sea of beige.” The units carry the branding for Abingdon’s new Stainfree for Life warranty which the company says has ‘lifted sales dramatically.” T 01274 655694 www.abingdonflooring.co.uk

Furlong Flooring Furlong enjoyed brisk business at Solihull around their flagship Carefree range from Regency Carpets. “I want to thank everyone who came to see us on the stand,” says Neil Valentine. “We have had a fantastic show and it’s our retailer support that makes it such a success.” Star of the show was the dramatic new wall units which incorporate waterfall lecterns to maximise the usability of the display. “We believe wall units need to work harder and the built-in lecterns look good and are more accessible for consumers. Sales of the new displays has been exceptional,” said Neil. Furlong is known for its pro-activity and innovation as the company is hinting at more marketing initiatives to come. “The interest in Carefree has been phenomenal,” says Neil, “but we are not known for standing still and we will also have something totally different to show people at Harrogate. Wools of New Zealand LaneveTM has arrived! The prestigious pedigree of the finest traceable wool from New Zealand’s top growers was launched as a concept in 2010 and manufacturers have been developing ranges worthy of Laneve’s uncompromising approach to quality. Solihull was the debut of the first three to come to market: Solar from Contemporary Life, Akaroa from Brockway and Open Spaces from Ulster. “Laneve goes beyond excellence,” says Steven Parsons of Wools of New Zealand. “Not all wool is created equally and this really is the cream of the cream.” WNZ have started signing up Premier Partner retailers to carry the LaneveTM message and are already well over half way to their target of 250 in the UK.
Carpet Recycling UK are focussing in on retailers’ collections schemes to reduce carpet waste as part of their mission to divert as much old carpet from landfill sites as possible – currently carpet makes up 10% of all residual waste in local authority sites – a staggering 420,000 tonnes. Laurance Bird is driving the campaign with pilot schemes to determine the best logistics for collecting carpet waste in retail and contract carpet sectors. The 2011 target is to divert 50,000 tonnes of waste into recycling, 11% of the total, and the organisation has set its objective at 25% by 2015. T 0161 440 8325 www.carpetrecyclinguk.com

Cranmore Park Show 2011 Edel Telenzo
Cormar Carpets Cormar came to Solihull with two new wool ranges. The new Avebury range, their new 100% wool loop pile, offers 17 colours with 5 stripes matching up with the sophisticated, clean colourbank of natural plains. “There is a growing demand for stripes and this range offers a smart way to work with modern natural colours,” says Cormar’s Northern sales manager Simon Tucker. The company, who won Flooring One’s Carpet Supplier of the Year at the event, also launched their 50/50 wool/lanelle twist pile heather Forest Hills with a great feel and a competitive price point. Two weights at 32oz and 42oz are available in both 4&5m widths.
Edel Telenzo have a reputation for introducing intelligent new initiatives to the market on a regular basis with an uncompromising approach to quality. Three examples at Solihull demonstrate the point. Gloss is sexy, heavyweight carpet bling with a high lustre six-fibre polyamide yarn and 15 lively colours. “This launch has been so well received we’re even struggling to keep up with the enquiries,” says Lesley Inman. Wild Romance, a luxury tenth-gauge polyamide with 15 rich colours is performing strongly since its launch at the end of last year and newcomer Chelsea is a winner in the 100% wool collection – a Brussels-look carpet with 3-ply Scotchgarded yarn and a specially developed colour bank. Ulster Carpets Ulster unveiled Grange Wilton at Solihull – a luxurious and attractive new high-density woven wilton range.
Axminster Carpets
Woven in 80% wool and 20% nylon Grange Wilton utilises high twist plain and heather yarns, creating the ultimate wilton floorcovering.
Axminster’s overhaul of their brand is complete and the company presents a sharp, modern look to the marketplace that has moved their product range forward. Wool prices have tended to make the main manufacturers more cautious about range launches at this time so Axminster is concentrating on updating their colours.
“We are very excited about Grange Wilton – it is a beautiful collection,” explains Dalreen Buchanan, Retail Commercial Manager at Ulster Carpets. “Colours selected for the range include on-trend earthy warm mineral tones, soft muted greys through to slate, beiges, green and reds all inspired by a ‘heritage’ palette”.
Best selling 80/20 tufted Devonia Plains adds three new on-trend colours while sister range Devonia Heathers adds five new colours. “These ranges already have extensive colour options,” says Axminster’s Stewart Martin, “but we are always looking for the latest trends to keep the ranges fresh and interesting.”
Colour has also been key to further Ulster range developments on show with Beaumont, a plaid range within the Country House Collection, increasing from four to eight colourways and with the addition of three new colourways to the Anatolia range – each available in medallion, scroll and co-ordinating runner designs.

Cavalier Carpets Cavalier are out to impress with their strikingly different display presentation. The sharp, slim-line wall units made in metal were launched last year to great acclaim for their white, clean, modern appearance. Now there is a sleek new matching lectern which matches up beautifully. It arrives in a flat pack and is easy to assemble. A novel feature is the absence of a back-board of graphics which gives the whole unit a low level look and, says Cavalier, helps make the retailer’s showroom look bigger, with less clutter. Brockway Carpets Brockway have high hopes of their new Jubilee collection which is set to be a company flagship range. An 80/20 with 10% nylon and 10% meltbond, Jubilee boasts three weights, two colours and 40 colours. “It’s a big range and a statement carpet,” said Brockway’s Steve Glover. “Over half those colours are colours – i.e. not beige – and we have great POS to show them all off.” Another company to recognise retail pressure on prices, Brockway came to Solihull with a new 50/50 range called Radnor Classic which is a 40oz tenth-gauge product which will be available in 12 colours and neutral heathers when it is launched next month. Ryalux Ryalux are talking about a full set of new colours for their flagship ranges in the V&A Collection, Period Velvet and Ryasilk and were using the Solihull show to canvas opinion. The new on-trend colourbank will be launched later this year.
Victoria Carpets Victoria’s launch into polypropylene with their ‘family-friendly’ EasiCare range has been a great success says Sean Lewis. “It’s going very well, beating our initial targets, and we have been encouraged to grow our polypropylene share of the market,” he says. EasiCare has had a phased launch with a Twist, Tweed and Saxony in the market so far and three new products in development for later. The ranges come with a 10-year stain and wear warranty in 4 and 5 metre widths – and each has a well thought-out colour range with 12 options.
The Ultimate Collection also had pride of place at the event following the increasingly successful response to the wall stand that shows off this sumptious collection of high-end twists, saxonies and shag piles. Ryalux are continuing to develop the Collection and the latest idea is a new pom box for sampling the shag pile options.

The Carpet Foundation Carpenter Underlay Carpenter came to Solihull with a little bit of black Magic to offer an entry-level product to the hard-pressed flooring industry. Magic is a 9mm 85kg/m2 PU foam underlay with a distinctive double-sided black laminate and it is fully recyclable. “We have a product that is aggressive on price to suit the prevailing market conditions,” said Carpenter’s Helen Rowberry.
The Carpet Foundation is the only industry-wide organisation promoting carpet and has announced a major £130k campaign of consumer advertising starting in September to deliver the message. The Foundation continues to work closely with editors and writers in the home interest press and has a fine record of feature coverage of carpet.
Magic has achieved a rating for General Domestic use so can be used throughout the installation including stairs.
CF’s Rupert Anton is also keen to involve retailers in the organisation’s important web work. “Retailers have an easy opportunity to benefit from our work here,” he says. “100,000 people visited the website in the last year and of those, a third were looking to find a retailer. This is generating real business.” Retailers can have a page for their own business on the site free of charge and so far about half the Foundation’s 1000-strong retailer membership have taken up the offer.

Louis De Poortere Louis De Poortere is aiming to increase its presence in the marketplace with a family of sharp, sophisticated point-ofsale systems in metal, black wood and acrylic. The latest addition is this 2-tier lectern that can be used very flexibly – available singly or to use backto-back to make a more imposing display. “We have had a very good reaction to these units,” says LDP’s Alan Russell. “It has been a while since we offered anything into stores and now it’s time to be more visibile out there,” he said. A debut for LDP in Solihull was a stunning new rug collection called Vintage using a ‘mash-up’ approach of hand-sewn panels in cotton chenille for multicolour and multi-texture effects. IFDA adds to waste network Recofloor has welcomed 20 new members from The Independent Floorcovering Distributors Association (IFDA) – a move that brings major benefits for both organisations. Recofloor is the UK’s award-winning vinyl flooring recycling scheme managed by Axion Consulting and founded and funded by leading flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor. The 20 distributors add another 32 drop-off sites to the nationwide network – making a total of 65 drop-off sites where flooring companies can deposit smooth uplifted vinyl, smooth vinyl offcuts and safety flooring offcuts for recycling. More sites are planned for 2011. Of the 32 branches, 12 were already Recofloor members, including distributors Kent Flooring and STS Flooring (Orpington) which both received Silver Certificates in last year’s Awards for recycling the most waste vinyl flooring in 2010. IFDA President Paul Carvall worked with Recofloor on developing a national scheme that enables their members to offer a UK-wide recycling service to their customers. This fits in with their localised IFDA-Link service where branches ‘inter-trade’ with each other across the UK to order goods. Paul says: “Joining Recofloor provides a perfect fit with our existing network across the UK and full membership builds on our commitment to reducing waste to landfill, bringing environmental and economic benefits for all.” Recofloor Project Manager, Jane Gardner says: “IFDA’s membership is a very positive step forward for Recofloor as the addition of 20 more drop-off sites will help to increase the volumes of waste flooring collected for recycling.” T 0161 355 7618

The British Wool column Wool is ‘cool’ at Grand Designs The sheer size of it was a show-stopper in itself. Add to that, the fact that over the course of nine days the new ‘Choose Wool’ exhibit was photographed by thousands of visitors, and the most frequent comment was ‘cool’ or ‘wow’ – after that, you really felt that wool had found its moment. Choose Wool was the simple message that the exhibit clearly professed and the statement feature became the most talked about at the show making the front page of the Grand Designs website on day 2 and staying there throughout. Even Kevin McLeod – the Channel 4 barometer of good taste stopped by to talk about it and his comments gave – as you would expect - a deeper perspective: “The brand is now about the story – the narrative behind the product is increasingly important. Most people have no idea where things come from but they want to know more now and it has to change. The story is part of the product, but wool has that story and it is perfect.”
Kevin McLeod at the Choose Wool stand at Grand Designs
Of course at British Wool, we would like to think that Kevin has the inside story on the design trends of the future but we know that it will take a lot of effort from many different parts of the wool flooring business to make that happen and more importantly, keep up the momentum.
However, the fact that the editor of Grand Designs Magazine also independently gave the ‘Choose Wool’ feature an award, is another strong indicator that wool is on the up. “We briefed our designers to create a Stop and Stare exhibit with a touch and feel response. We did not want a typical trade show stand look because we felt that wool and the Campaign for Wool needed to build a stronger and more innovative display that had a broader reach and longer impact. It was about getting people to interact with wool and remember it, so that we can build on those responses,” Bridgette Kelly of British Wool said.
The Wool Showcase – offered advice and guidance to consumers
A showcase for wool carpet There was also a Wool Showcase at the Grand Designs stand with a small selection of product from Ulster, Brintons, Axminster, Brockway, Cormar and a number of others. Queries from the public showed how little people understand about wool carpet and how much guidance is needed in-store. Tim Booth of the BWMB said: “We must be conscious of the fact that people do not make this purchase regularly and so their knowledge is based on their previous purchase which may have been ten years ago. The aim of our showcase was simply to profile wool carpet – which was not available anywhere else at the event. “There was definitely an opportunity to make a few decent sales. Most people wanted a serious discussion about their flooring needs – they were looking for carpet for the whole house or they may have wanted to do the hall, stairs and landing. Many of them wanted good advice to help them make the right decisions – quite a few wanted to know about using wool in specific situations – with under floor heating, or with a wood flooring surround. Some wanted buying tips, to ensure that they knew how to choose a good product for a particular location. There were so many questions – so it was very worthwhile.” The wool showcase did not sell carpets – it was purely a place to discuss flooring requirements and help point people in the right direction. But, as Mr Booth points out: “There were several hard flooring companies there providing extensive design and advice assistance – wool carpet needs to be there too.”
“It was brilliant to see that it had multi-generational appeal, from the very small to the young consumer to the older more sophisticated and thoughtful buyer. It also won plaudits from the interior designers that attended, many of which felt that wool had desperately needed a bolder, more memorable image.”
WOOL WEEK – MARK YOUR DIARY Wool Week will commence on 5th September – coinciding perfectly with the industry’s own celebration of flooring at Harrogate. Please take a look at the Campaign for Wool website – ww.campaignforwool.org and get involved in this year’s programme. There is so much that can be gained from supporting it and if you require any Campaign for Wool or British Wool POS materials – please contact marketing@britishwool.org.uk.

Survey
Colour full?
Bright ideas 87% say new colours keep carpet fresh
Retailers support colour makeovers Re-colouring carpet ranges has become something of a frenetic focus in the last year for manufacturers as they seek to differentiate their products in a beige market where sales are increasingly difficult to secure.
65% say manufacturers get colour right
The colour make-over is also less expensive than launching a new range but sampling costs are still a major financial cross to bear for a hard pressed industry. Are they wasting their money and your time when consumers are so resistant to budge from beige?
55% detect no consumer shift from beige
In May’s Flooring Forum survey of our readership, colour got a strong vote of support – 87% said new colours kept carpet fresh and fashionable and 85% said they drive sales even if the consumer ultimately buys beige. Only 12% thought manufacturers were wasting their money.
63% intervene on consumer colour choice
The recession does not appear to have played a major part in attitudes. Only 30% of retailers said it had encouraged consumers to choose safer, more neutral colours.
65% say stripes will sell more
On balance, 65% said manufacturers were getting it about right and giving them the colours they need to make the sale though one South West retailer commented: “Customers are always looking for something different, colour, pattern or design. Manufacturers need to be more creative.”
The Stocklists polled 422 retailers throughout the UK during March 2011. Replies and comments are recorded anonymously. Many thanks to all those who took part.
But beige will remain big business. Over half of our retailers said beige was 80% or more of their sales and 55% said that they had seen no real shift away from neutral colours. 48% said the new, more subtle beiges, such as ‘greiges’ had helped their sales. We were interested to know to what extent retailers tried to influence their customers on colour choice during the sale process and were surprised that 63% said they often intervene in the decision with about a third saying they stayed out of the discussion. We thought the flurry of new stain-resistant warranties in the synthetic sector may be helping to sell paler carpets but only half of our respondents agreed with this idea. Finally we asked our survey respondents to do some crystal ball gazing about the colours, patterns and textures that they thought was on the way up and down in the next year… Grey, green and taupe were seen as the upcoming colours with black and blues expected to decline in popularity. Red and brown were expected to hold steady.
On patterns, there was strong support for stripes – 65% expect the market to grow – but they were beaten by fleck which won 70% support. But a salutary comment from one Scottish retailer: “We had a run on stripes before Christmas, and stocked up with stripes in January and February. I don't think we've sold one this year!” Classic axminster designs and pindot were the least favoured. A North East retailer commented: “I am by no means a snob, but it breaks my heart to lift a relatively new axminster to replace it with a cheap feltback in this year’s happening colour.” On carpet types, it was no surprise that twist pile and saxonies remain the strongest contenders. Only carved carpet was singled out for decline. “A well priced dark Saxony sells itself – there is a definite move towards darker more practical shades,” said one respondent.
“It breaks my heart to lift an axminster for this year’s happening colour.”

Flower on Flooring News News Out of sight . . . . . . but not out of mind, where underlay is concerned, with new product launches ensuring ongoing industry attention. It's time for our annual focus on the subject of underlay and once again there is plenty to report on, as manufacturers maintain momentum in providing cost effective and high performance options. Axfelt has more wool than many carpets!
Floorwise has made every effort to address retailer concerns in selling PU underlays with its Hyper collection, says managing director Richard Bailey. "Rather than just a non-descript range with minimal marketing and POS support, Hyper really does provide retailers with the best chance of securing sales in PU underlay and is heavily geared towards focusing consumer attention on the importance of a good underlay. "Introducing terms such as ‘bouncebackability’ and ‘boing factor’ to the underlay scene, Hyper aims to make technical Floorwise POS aims ro help retailers sell underlay options performance statistics easily understandable," he says. This includes using language that has relevance to the consumer’s perception of how underlay should perform, with each aspect of Hyper marketing designed to make the retailer’s job easier. “With the expansive Hyper underlay collection retailers benefit not only from value focused PU underlays with excellent performance, but also a range that makes sense from an in-store perspective, promoting benefits in a way that is clear and, most importantly, in a way that stands out and catches the eye," says Bailey.
Axminster Carpets reports continued satisfaction for its Axfelt underlay, says Richard Lawrence, group head of marketing. "Using waste from the yarn and carpet manufacturing processes, the underlay offers an unsurpassable blend of comfort, performance and durability – an important factor in the consumers’ perception and hence their willingness to buy," he says. It consists of a top layer of 95% wool (yarn waste), a middle layer of 50% wool and other carpet fibres and a supporting layer of 100% rubber crumb, repurposed from old lorry tyres. This combination of recycled content makes Axfelt the ideal combination underlay, says Lawrence, who further states that waste from other manufacturers is now being purchased to keep up with demand.
Interfloor's Tredaire Contract 7
"Localised production and the diversion from landfill into consumer goods means that Axfelt has one of the lowest carbon footprints of any domestic carpet underlay. We’ve also introduced recycled biodegradable packaging for Axfelt as we look at every opportunity to reduce the environmental impact of the underlay," he concludes. Tredaire Contract 9 & Tredaire Sensation.
“We need to promote clear benefits in a way that makes sense from an in-store perspective”

Interfloor reports it has added three new ultra high density (145 kg/m3) PU underlays into its expanding range. Tredaire Contract 7 is a 7mm gauge underlay with orange facing film and Tredaire Contract 9 is a 9mm gauge underlay with violet facing film. Both have been designed for double stick applications but can also be stretch fitted. Tredaire Sensation is an 11mm gauge underlay with green facing film, developed for the residential market where superior durability is required. All three products come with high performance, printed, Textron backings.

“e underlay market is incredibly competitive and it is all about product differentiation across the range.” This brings the stable of Tredaire PU underlays to eight but Interfloor manufactures over 25 PU underlays for the UK market. Gary Cowley, Interfloor sales director, says: “Customer response to our PU range has been extremely positive. These new products will give extra momentum to our sales growth and we’re well on our way to becoming the UK market leader in PU underlay.” Novostrat manufactures high performance, high value, underlays for wood, laminate and carpet, designed to provide options for all room types, applications and budgets. The company's claim is being further supported through yet more introductions to its range, encompassing such underlays as Sonic Classic for use with underfloor heating systems, Sonic Gold Excel for up to 22dB noise penetration resistance, Graphite for a high value carpet underlay and now, Combat and Combat Plus, for high performance and versatility at entry level pricing. The company states its products are environmentally friendly, contain no harmful HCFCs, are Class 0 fire rated and fully recyclable, either as off-cuts or at the end of their working life. Ratcliffe's Underlays provides another example of a specialist supplier to the flooring trade. The company makes three grades of combination underlays, the most popular of which is Monarch Underlay. Made entirely from recycled materials, the upper surface comprises reused carpet fibres, bonded by latex, while the lower surface of rubber crumb is comprised of recycled tyre granules. Ratcliffe's is also the sole UK distributor for Foxi - The Rug Tamer. This is available in four widths and there is a new roll length of 30m. The product can be used to stop rugs moving on both carpets and smooth floors. Alternatives to Foxi include StopRug, the company states, which is lighter in weight and can be supplied up to a maximum width of 240cm. Carpenter is one of the world’s largest producers of PU underlay and finds its Greenstep range is proving most popular. National sales manager Helen Rowberry, said: “The underlay market is incredibly competitive yet the Greenstep range is a winning choice. Unlike most entry level products which are rated as light domestic and therefore unsuitable for use on stairs, Greenstep is rated as general domestic, which means it is suitable for staircases making it exceptional value-for-money. In addition, and again it is all about differentiating it from competitor products, Greenstep, along with all Carpenter underlays, is fully recyclable at the end of its life.”

On their metal Bronze, silver and gold hues dominate the stone, wood and mosaic designs in the Precious Metals cushion floor collection by Avenue. Each design features the Natural Look & Feel surface to lift the décor to a new level of realism, while the shimmering colours, beginning with soft silver tones, through gold to weathered bronze shades, add an air of quiet sophistication making Precious Metals a collection of rare beauty. Precious Metals have a 15-year guarantee. “The collection stands out from the crowd and typifies our approach to providing consumers with collections that place style just as high as practicality,” says Caroline Wille, Product Manager.

Covering some 13,500 square metres, the plant will see IVC Group employ 110 operatives in the first stage, rising to 150 members when fully operational and running in a five shift pattern. “The plant represents our commitment to entering the luxury vinyl market with the Moduleo Design Floors collection,” says Filiep Vermeulen, marketing director. “As with our cushion floor brands, we wanted to make sure that Moduleo Design Floors delivers quality, style and value without compromise. The new plant will help us to meet our expectations, providing strict quality control, reducing transportation impact and helping us to respond to changing market dynamics quickly and efficiently.” With construction already well underway the plant is expected to be running at full capacity by the end of 2011. Check out Tesco ‘Every little helps’ to deepen the gloom of UK independent retailers as the mighty Tesco joins the fight for precious consumer purchases on carpet with a new online store. The grocery giant, the world’s third largest retailer, has launched an online carpet store at tescocarpets.com with a limited supply of three collections of four twists, four loops and one velvet range. Price points start at £13.99/m2 for a 4 metre felt-backed 80/20 twist and £14.99 for a stain resistant 2-ply polypropylene twist in 4 and 5 metres. Most expensive is the Hinton Twist at £24.99. All loop piles, including berbers, are 100% wool and retail at £15.99 while the Napton Velvet range is an 80/20 in 4 metres at £19.99. Underlay, doorbars and gripper can also be added to the carpet order – a 7.5m2 roll of rubber underlay is £44.95 and a 15m2 roll of 8mm ‘luxury’ PU is £74.85. There is a £40 delivery charge for UK mainland addresses. Tesco’s has partnered with Victoria Carpets and the National Institute of Carpet & Floorlayers (NICF) to supply and fit carpets for their customers. The site has been set up separately under a new company name Carpets@Home Limited and is distinct from the main Tesco websites – in fact the option to buy carpet appears strangely absent from the Tesco Direct website where furniture is sold. Carpet is not available through the large Tesco Extra superstores. The site includes helpful guides to measure rooms before ordering but consumers have to sort out the fitting arrangements themselves through the ‘find-a-fitter’ system on the website which will give them contact details for NICF members in their area. Consumers can request up to three samples free which will be delivered in 2 to 3 days. Carpet will be delivered “to a room of your choice” within 10 days. And, of course, purchases attract Tesco Clubcard points. Initial reactions to the Tesco initiative have been predictably hostile from independent retailers who see any erosion of market share in the current climate as a setback. The nature of carpet selection and difficulties of price comparison means that the carpet industry has been spared the major impact of online retailing that has had such an impact on other interiors sectors such as white goods, blinds and lighting. Sean Lewis of Victoria Carpets told The Stocklists: “We are very pleased to have been selected by Tesco to work with them on the creation of the website, adding broadloom carpet to their range. Our aim is to continue to work for the independent retailer.” T 00 32 5665 3211 www.tescocarpets.com
‘Only 7 years of landfill left’ Carpet Recycling UK is calling on more councils to introduce dedicated containers for accepting waste carpet from householders at civic amenity sites in a bid to divert more of this recyclable material from landfill. Waste carpet comprises 11% of residual waste at CA sites, yet it can be used in new products by a rising number of specialist carpet recyclers in the UK. End uses include equestrian surface mixtures, wool carpets for contained growing media and energy recovery applications. Landfill diversion of carpet wastes has grown from 1.5% to more than 9% over the past three years since Carpet Recycling UK was established by the carpet industry. The industry goal is 25% by 2015. Key to its successful recycling is keeping it dry and separate from other waste, says the industry-backed association for recycling and reusing waste carpet, which is managed by Axion Consulting. “With only seven years of landfill space left in the UK, local authorities can make a huge difference by making the right facilities available to boost waste carpet recycling,” says CRUK co-ordinator Jane Gardner of Axion Consulting, which manages CRUK. “There are 19 specialist carpet recyclers in the UK, so it should be possible for councils to find an alternative to landfill. Given the severe pressure on UK landfill availability and the public’s willingness to recycle more, making this provision represents an excellent opportunity to both protect the environment and increase resource for recyclers,” she says. Known to many as the entrepreneur that first introduced the natural all wool berber to the marketplace. After attending Ermysteds Grammar School in Skipton and Art and Design College, Bruce joined the family business in 1961. The family owned mill produced woollen yarns and rug kits. After coming across a natural berber product from North Africa (no dyes or colourings) he decided that if he could make a wall to wall carpet which picked up the natural warmth and look of the product, then it would be a winner and so it proved to be. He worked with yarn suppliers, carding engineers and tufting machine manufacturers until he came up with his first range Rusticana. It proved to be a smash hit with both the retail and contract sectors both in the UK and Europe .He followed Rusticana with a succession of top quality loop pile all wool products and soon was struggling to meet the demands. Combining forces with the Gaskell Group gave him an even greater demand for his products and this success carried right through to his retirement in 1990. Other business interests included a period as a non executive director of the Skipton Building Society and a Tax Commissioner. Bruce did not only excel in the workplace but also as a equestrian horseman, a avid skier and for the last 30 years of his life a very capable helicopter pilot. His Augusta Bell, Jet Ranger flying machine was a frequent sight above the skies in North Yorkshire. Many a charity organiser was grateful for the pleasure trips he used to give to lucky winners of countless raffles. He will be sadly missed by his wife Jan and his close friends.
