Flooring Factsheet Adhesives
Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED
WOVEN
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.
Level loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality. Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms. CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas. Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.
Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms. CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home. Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.
Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the
BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves.

Regular Maintenance Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur. Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers! Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet. Use only WOOLSAFE approved products WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.
The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.
Periodic Cleaning When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company. If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE approved products. Look for the WOOLSAFE Mark on the bottle or package. It is best to engage the services of a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning company. To get a really expert job done entrust the work to a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. These companies are fully trained, have been in business for a considerable length of time, are members of one or more recognised professional trade associations related to the cleaning industry and have a reputation for top quality service. And they use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents on your wool carpets and rugs!
If you have a problem with a carpet or rug that requires an independent inspector, a network of carpet complaint investigators, trained and registered by The WOOLSAFE Organisation is available throughout the UK and Ireland. WOOLSAFE Registered Inspectors have extensive experience in investigating the causes for carpet complaints based on their practical involvement with carpets and rugs over many years. They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers, retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can carry out or commission tests where required, and will provide comprehensive reports. Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
www.flooringone.co.uk Contact: Glenn Harding Tel: 0121 683 1426 glenn.harding@flooringone.co.uk
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,
any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see
The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 8
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents
• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.floorwise.co.uk
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!
Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter
• shedding • pulled loops
Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 10
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

Flattening
Shedding
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Shading
Indentations
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet
SAFE
Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
DURABLE EASYCARE
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
Comfort
COMFORT
Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.
Safety
The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet.
100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.
britishwool.org.uk campaignforwool.org THE STOCKLISTS March 2014
Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 17

Looking back at Domotex With some 45,000 visitors from over 80 countries, Domotex 2014 proved to be a successful edition of the world’s largest trade show for flooring. For Edel Telenzo it was no different. CEO Phil Hartley: “It was like being in a Ceneva®: the world’s first SBR-free backing ‘time warp’. The days flew by so quickly as we literally bounced from one interested customer to another, with a great mix of existing and potentially new customers.” As always, Edel Telenzo introduced the new ranges for the coming year at Domotex. Our new wool products included additions to the popular Tube Collection and Bloomsbury & Harrow (please see below). Next to the new products we also introduced the world’s first 100% SBR-free carpet backing, Ceneva®. Reduced flammability, an odourless carpet, lower emissions of VOCs and a more flexible carpet are all advantages of Ceneva®. Further, omitting SBR make Edel Telenzo carpets the environmentally friendly option.
Bloomsbury & Harrow are the latest additions to our wool collection
Introducing: Bloomsbury & Harrow Bloomsbury and Harrow are two of the new products that were introduced during Domotex 2014. Staying loyal to quality and design, Bloomsbury and Harrow are the latest examples of innovative products with which Edel Telenzo continues to lead the structured loop market. A 3-ply yarn from 100% New Zealand wool is used to create an elegant structured loop design and a tip sheared coordinate for a more velvet look. Six earthy tones make up the contemporary colour palette. Bloomsbury & Harrow will be available by the end of May.

After two years focusing on polypropylene range launches, Cormar Carpets has switched emphasis, with the re-launch of its popular wool twist Home Counties Plains range and the addition of a twin complementary collection, Home Counties Heathers. Made from 80% pure new wool, 10% tuftbond and 10% polypropylene, Home Counties Plains and Heathers are premier quality tenth gauge carpets in two pile weights (42oz and 50oz), making them ideal for high traffic areas such as stairways and hallways. Cormar’s Home Counties Plains hits the right note with its 18 strong palette including 12 new plain colours, branded under the Wools of New Zealand banner. And while contemporary neutrals remain at the heart of the collection, those who want to opt for a splash of colour can choose from shades such as Cardinal Red and deep Espresso Brown. Home Counties Heathers offers a selection of 14 classic heather hues such as Rutland Elm and Kirkstone, in British Wool, providing the perfect canvas to work alongside any interior décor schemes. Available in both 4m and 5m widths to avoid joins, both ranges will retail from £29 per sq m. Cormar’s marketing director, David Cormack said: “Wool twist has always been big business for Cormar and UK retailers in general, and with the economy appearing to have turned a corner, we feel that now is the right time to re-launch Home Counties.
Luxury with uncommon Sensit With the renowned softness and dense texture of innovative Sensit fibres, plush Sensit Glenmore Wilton is the latest quality developed exclusively by Balta Broadloom and impressed visitors at its recent Domotex 2014 launch.
“Both the Plains and the Heathers are top quality wool twist that we believe will stand out from the rest of the market. More recently new colour trends have started to emerge and the two new Home Counties collections capture the essence of this new trend perfectly, he said” T 01204 881234

Immediately distinctive thanks to its appealing soft and silky texture, walking across Sensit Glenmore is a truly luxurious experience. Constructed from high performance polypropylene Sensit fibres containing 300 filaments per yarn, Sensit Glenmore shows off the shimmering appearance, silky softness and resilient properties making it a hit in the carpet world. In a high quality Wilton weave, the dense construction of the carpet features an impressive pile weight of 2.710 grams per square metre and deep pile height of no less than 17mm - giving abundant underfoot comfort. Sensit Glenmore is available in a choice of two designs; Cumulus showing a softly mottled salt and pepper appearance and Abstract giving a subtle hint of linear pattern and colour. Both designs come in a contemporary colour palette of cool neutrals, ranging from the lighter tones of Magnolia and Beige through to Walnut and deep Smoky Black. The carpet is not only luxurious but also highly practical, with great resistance to crushing making it suitable for heavy domestic use, even in high traffic areas of the home. Sensit Glenmore also comes with inherent StainSafe protection and is fully bleach cleanable in case of occasional spills. The range is covered by 15-year wear and 20-year stain warranties. “Sensit Glenmore was launched at Domotex and chosen to carpet our large stand at this busy show,” comments Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Broadloom. “Plenty of visitors noticed and commented on the comfort and lush appearance the carpet has to offer, and despite heavy footfall and intensive usage the carpet retained its brand new look. It was a neat demonstration that qualities made from Sensit fibres really do offer the best of both worlds.” See page 50 for Balta’s Domotex report. T +32 56 62 22 11 from The Stocklists

Care campaign is in the pink
Retailers across the country are beginning to receive their Floorwise Aware marketing packs as interest in the pink underlay in support of Breast Cancer Care continues to grow.
“We are enjoying excellent sign-up to the campaign from retailers keen to become part of this charitable incentive,” says Richard Bailey, managing director, Floorwise. “Working with a charity such as Breast Cancer Care, with recognition across the country, is an excellent opportunity for flooring retailers to align themselves with a good cause and to benefit from the positive feeling that fundraising has.” The Floorwise Aware campaign sees a charitable donation for every roll of pink underlay sold, but it is also a chance for retailers to raise profile and draw footfall to store on a local level, without resorting to advertising or other forms of paid-for exposure, as Richard explains: “Advertising is often met with a degree of cynicism, but flooring retailers are left with little other marketing ammunition, or the budget necessary, to find other ways to generate interest in the local community. Floorwise Aware is our attempt to address this.” Breast Cancer Care has several low-cost fundraising activities, such as its Strawberry Tea, sponsored walks and cycles, Pink Fridays and more, details of which can be found on the website at http://www.breastcancercare.org.uk. Retailers can use these activities to raise engagement with the local community and to gather exposure in local media and on social platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. The positive feeling can be felt in-store too, with many consumers appreciating the effort made by the retailer to donate to charity. The in-store marketing pack includes posters, balloons and window stickers helping to communicate the benefits and charitable donation of Floorwise Aware. T 01509 673974

Champions kick off for recycling
Recofloor will be honouring its vinyl flooring recycling champions at its 2014 annual awards event at Aston Villa Football Club in Birmingham on March 12th. This third event will be hosted by BBC Sport’s football pundit Mark Lawrenson, a defender in the Liverpool and Ireland football teams of the 1980s.
Founded in 2009 by leading flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor, Recofloor is the UK’s award-winning national vinyl flooring recycling scheme that works with the entire supply chain to divert vinyl flooring waste from landfill. Competition for the awards is intense, but recipients recognise the benefits as previous Gold Award winner Sean Dawson, Hull Flooring’s MD can testify: “Demonstrating our commitment to Green issues certainly acts as a ‘selling tool’ for our business. As margins get tighter, this helps to differentiate our business and attract new customers through being able to offer that little bit extra.” Carla Eslava, Recofloor’s Project Officer said:“The Recofloor Awards is a much-anticipated event by our members, offering excellent networking opportunities to share expert knowledge and learn more about how the scheme can work for your business.” Material collected by Recofloor’s 510-plus membership is recycled back into products, such as new flooring, which benefits the environment and reduces collectors’ waste disposal costs. Since its 2009 inception, Recofloor has collected 1,644 tonnes of smooth offcuts, smooth uplifted vinyl and safety offcuts for recycling back into products, such as new flooring – enough to cover 76 football pitches. I wish the company every success for the future.” James Igoe, F. Ball Managing Director (pictured right), commented: “It was good to be able to welcome Lord Livingston to F. Ball on what was his first company visit as a minister and great to see him getting out to the regions and showing his support for UK manufacturing. We’re also pleased to have had the opportunity to show him the work we’re doing to develop overseas markets, based on the solid foundation we’ve built in the UK over 127 years of trading.” F. Feature: Wool Owners Warranty
Adding WOW to carpet purchases Following the launch of the WOW initiative for wool brands, the Woolsafe Organisation answers queries on the scheme: Q: What is the Wool Owners Warranty (WOW)? WOW is a completely new and unique carpet aftercare programme, offering customers a free twelve month stain removal warranty on wool and wool-rich purchases from several leading carpet manufacturers. It is designed to keep wool carpet spotless and looking great throughout its lifetime. Q: How does WOW work? When a purchase of a wool carpet from any of the participating manufacturers is made, customers are automatically eligible to register for the warranty for free. They will then be contacted by their allocated personal carpet care adviser, who will arrange to visit them at a convenient time to deliver a free bottle of spot remover and give some simple but important advice on removing stains. If during the year after installation the carpet owner has a spill they can’t get out, their WOW Registered Carpet Cleaner will attempt a professional stain removal free of charge. Q: How long is WOW valid? The initial warranty is for 12 months. However, WOW can be extended every year, and for the lifetime of the carpet, on condition that the carpet is professionally cleaned by a WOW Registered Carpet Cleaner. Q: Who are the WOW cleaners? All WOW Registered Carpet Cleaners are WoolSafe Approved Service Providers who have undergone Fibre Care Specialist training, have a minimum of five years experience and only use WoolSafe Approved Products when cleaning wool or wool-rich carpet. Q: How is WOW different from any other warranty? No other warranty or ‘stain proof guarantee’ offers a free visit by a professional carpet care advisor, free bottle of spot remover, a free spot removal service, free emergency contact in the event of a spillage and a free online account where carpet owners can keep track of their carpets under warranty and access carpet care advice, videos and mobile Apps.
Q: How does WOW benefit me, the retailer? WOW aims to remove a major obstacle to consumers buying wool carpet– the perceived difficulty of cleaning. Consumers can buy wool with confidence allowing you to benefit from the increased revenue associated with the sale of wool carpet. Correct after-care will improve the lifetime performance of wool carpet increasing customer satisfaction and generating repeat and new sales through recommendations. It is free for retailers to participate.
Q: How do I offer my customers WOW? You can simply inform your customer about Wool Owners Warranty and leave them to register themselves or you can highlight your after-care service by registering them in store in three easy steps: 1. Visit www.wowwarranty.com, click on the retailer Login and register your company. (In future you will login through the same portal.) 2. Input your customer’s details and the information of the carpet purchased. 3. Either select a local WOW Registered Cleaner or leave it on automatic allocation; agree to the T&Cs and click Register. The process is simple and takes just two minutes. Q: What if the service provider is called out but cannot remove the stain from the carpet? WOW Warranty is not a ‘stain proof carpet’ guarantee, it is an after care advice and spot removal warranty. On any fibre some stains are permanent so no guarantees are given to remove them. However, the vast majority of stains can be removed by the experienced and highly trained WOW Registered Carpet Cleaners.
Q. Should a wool carpet be cleaned every year? Yes, wool carpet is very good at hiding soil and trapping allergens and pollutants. It acts like a giant filter regulating indoor air quality and humidity. However, for it to be effective this ‘filter’ needs to be cleaned regularly. Correct and frequent maintenance will extend the useful life of the carpet by removing grit and dirt that abrade the fibres and cause loss of pile density and flattening to occur. Only WoolSafe Approved cleaning products are used when carrying out warranty work. Approved products have been scientifically tested and found safe and effective for use on all fibres including wool, and are proven not to cause rapid re-soiling after cleaning. The Wool Owners Warranty initiative has the full backing of The British Wool Marketing Board and Wools of New Zealand.
“WOW is a completely new and unique carpet aftercare programme”
T 01943 850 817 www.woolsafe.org
Q: I already have a carpet cleaning company that I work alongside. Can I choose to use them? As long as they are a WOW Registered Carpet Cleaner and thus approved by WoolSafe, this is not a problem as the portal will give you the option to nominate the company of preference at your discretion. 40 March 2014

Star signing for Harrogate
The campaign to bring top quality manufacturers back to Harrogate is powering ahead say organisers, with Adam Carpets as the most recent high profile signatory to the September show.
Event organiser Paul Stott said: “Some long overdue economic optimism and the support of an important group of exhibitors makes us confident we now have a great platform to rebuild the Harrogate exhibition to a size and stature appropriate to this important industry. Our team is very excited about the show’s prospects.” Wendy Adams, event director, said bookings were well ahead of the position this time last year. New dates for the event were announced - moving it back in the Autumn to September 21st - 23rd - after consultation with leading manufacturers and suppliers and the change has been well received across the trade. The event team are also working on a range of new initiatives to add to the Trends Hub and the enhanced desmonstrations and seminars that were such a success in 2013. T 01423 779967

Staying with its promise to provide retailers with a range of flexible and appealing point of sale tools as well as a continually developing and innovative product selection, Crown Floors has announced several updates to both its wall units and lecterns for 2014.
For retailers wanting a large, statement display, exciting new five-star ranges Penrose (pictured above) and Roseland are elegantly displayed on the Crown Floors wall unit for the first time. In a contemporary range of soft neutrals from dove grey to creams and caramels, Penrose introduces both plain and striped qualities in a dense and plush texture, showcasing a range of 13 neutral colours, coordinated by three linear designs to give homeowners a unique and contemporary look to their home. Both superbly soft and plush thanks to a 15mm pile height, the carpet offers durability, practicality and peace of mind covered by impressive 15-year stain and wear warranties. Capitalising on the flexibility and manoeuvrability of lectern-style displays, retailers will now also be able to choose from a selection of six qualities for display on the Crown Floors lectern, including Penrose and Roseland, and brand new ranges that are soon to be rolled out in Parkland, Wilton House and Sheringham. Established favourite Alderley Edge, updated in a five-metre width, can also be selected. The lecterns are now available with two, four or six ranges, and are an ideal way for retailers to add an appealing and neatly compact point of sale that has proved to be highly popular amongst buyers browsing for carpet. The British Wool column New stand design at Surfaces, Las Vegas
WOW...it’s great news for Wool
Education and branding shine bright for wool at Surfaces The Campaign for Wool launched a major push for wool at the leading trade show for flooring in Las Vegas with a new logo - ‘the green sheep - live naturally choose wool’ - made available to all wool retailers and manufacturers.
A striking new stand design gave a bold image to the Campaign, which is gathering a lot of interest from the American manufacturer.
The Campaign launched an industry standard education programme putting the key attributes of wool and its superior benefits and its long lasting appearance at the core of the promotional campaign. This will focus on the fibre and processing stages and wool in different types of carpets and rugs.
The aim is to support the many manufacturers and organisations promoting wool by helping with industry valued tools and accessible information. The Continual Education Unit which will become part of a major roll out of the Campaign in the USA this year.
British Wool has become a partner in an initiative introduced by several leading wool brands - Kingsmead Carpets, Gaskell Wool Rich, Crucial Trading, Manx Carpets, Georgian Carpets, Clarendon Carpets and Mr Tomkinson. These leading carpet manufacturers have all put their strength behind a free consumer warranty offer on wool carpets within their ranges. WOW - which stands for Wool Owner’s Warranty - is a special after-care service for consumers that provides an initial warranty of 12 months from the date of purchase and this warranty can be extended indefinitely by having the carpet professionally cleaned by a WOW registered carpet cleaner once a year. This will automatically renew the warranty on the carpet giving added value to the consumer. Confidence in buying wool carpets is at the heart of this significant consumer promotion and these brands have made a concerted move to give wool - with all its many benefits - the edge against the bleach clean sector. The registration of the new carpet under this warranty will see every new wool owner receive a WoolSafe spot remover. WoolSafe is a global organisation dedicated to the care of wool carpet and rugs. In reality Wool has many unique assets that help protect it naturally, including an ability to resist spills initially, so that they can be blotted up . Also, as the wool fibre will retain natural oils over its entire lifetime, the carpet can and does resist clinging dirt better than manmade fibres. “This is a really substantial promotion with excellent credentials bringing together leading wool organisations, major brand names and using the industry approved organisation WoolSafe to roll it out,” said Tim Booth, Marketing Manager at the BWMB. “We think this has tremendous value for the retailer and the consumer, offers tangible benefits and we are delighted to be part of it.”
The launch also saw the ONEWOOL platform given its first American viewing as part of the Campaign’s international agenda to achieve one nomination from wool interiors manufacturers. An online ONEWOOL Gallery will be launched this year.
“We want to use some of these elements in the UK as well and we intend to bring the core aspect of the education materials to the UK market so that these can be used to promote better wool knowledge and boost sales,” said Bridgette Kelly of Campaign for Wool.

Wool winners show stylish decor in Homes & Gardens feature
The winning designs of an interior design competition launched during Wool Week with Homes & Gardens will be featured in its April issue - on the shelf in March. Fabulously bold designs from three talented designers give wool a distinct edge over a seven page spread in the glossy interiors magazine. A professional interior designer, a student and a design enthusiast have all won the opportunity to see their moodboard and creative ideas with wool turned in to a room scene that was professionally styled and photographed. 44 March 2014
“Continuing an inspirational agenda for wool in the home is key to our Campaign activity and in doing so, working with these leading consumer interiors publications such as Homes & Gardens to support and influence the consumer is vital,” said Bridgette Kelly of the Campaign for Wool. “The results of this creativity that the entrants demonstrated is particularly exciting as it helps to show how wool can be used by our consumers.” Look out for Homes & Gardens on sale in March.

DOMOTEX 2014 January11-14 , Hannover •
Designers lighten up to lift the mood More colour, more confidence, more co-ordination Flooring design has caught the mood of the market and is a little lighter, a little more colourful and a little more confident. Domotex is a superb barometer of trends and taste in design and colour for the year ahead as over 1,000 suppliers show off their latest look. Just as the flooring industry has gone soft on texture with ever more touchy-feely fibres, the colours across the range have followed suit with the dominance of softer, warmer shades. The industry is still in bondage to shades of grey, so to speak, with many ranges throwing out the slower sellers to make way for the ‘greiges’ and increasingly softer, dove and blue greys. The colour casualties have been the darker browns and reds whose homely warmth seems to have worn thin with consumers. Another key theme that has developed over the last year is denim blue which has been strong in rugs for a couple of years – in varying states of fadedness – but is finding favour with wall-to-wall buyers too. In keeping with the denim trend, pastels are popular with lavender and lilacs, peaches and pinks – ‘shellfish’ colours - more in evidence for the year ahead. Our guide around the textiles colours was carpet design guru Joanna Ramsden of Wools of New Zealand who also pointed out some of the colour accent themes that will complement the more subtle shades. “There is more coordination of colours across interiors now that the flooring industry can react more quickly to trends in the market,” she says.
“As well as the softer shades, we are seeing some more vibrant colours come through – after the depression of the hard economic times, people do like colours that lift the mood,” said Joanna, citing yellows, brighter greens and jewel-like colours such as emerald, sapphire and topaz. That comment was echoed by Franky Terrijn of Balterio who noted that the darker wood decors were less popular. “People like lighter colours in darker times,” he says and the laminate company is leading 2014 with paler and bleached oaks to lighten the mood. Strangely enough, just as the jubilee and the Olympics promoted an outbreak of patriotism in red, white and blue, the upcoming world cup in Brazil (and then the Olympics) is expected to create some appetite for strong colours as consumers see the vibrant fiesta images on their TV screens, says Joanna. This kind of colourful fun is no longer reserved for the textile trade. Earthwerks made an impact at Domotex as we reported last month with their bright cocktail of ColorWerks in LVT wood effect planks – “Our competitors do brown, we do different,” said Ton Van de Ven of Earthwerks. Any passion for pattern in broadloom still belongs largely to the stripe and manufacturers have by no means run out of ideas to prolong the fashion with several new ranges at the Hannover event including asymmetrical stripes and the zig-zag version we’ve seen from Crucial Trading. But the emphasis now is on the promotion of coordinated plains with stripe to keep consumers loyal to a single supplier across various rooms of the home. Yarn is, of course, where much of the innovation is being driven in broadloom carpets and it’s not all about softness (though mostly it is!). Clever yarn combinations are delivering multi-textured effects as well interesting finishes such as variations on the salt-and-pepper ‘pattern’ that has seen an increase in popularity as an alternative to heather. The use of some shiny strands in finishes is now well established and is being used with more subtlety across the ranges. So flooring fashion has found reasons to be cheerful! Read our reviews of the latest launches at Domotex 2014 from pages 47 to 52.

Tapibel tiles take on the market Tapibel is about to make a name for itself in tiles – a sector the company believes is going to benefit from substantial growth and in which they have been investing heavily over the last year. The specific name they are about to make is ‘Incati’, a new brand name with the strapline “innovative carpet tiles” which says it all. “We have not been known for tiles but this is a major change in our business and we plan to make a big splash,” says Mike Packwood of Tapibel. “We have developed some impressive products and the reaction at Domotex has been very positive indeed to what we are doing. “This is a slow-burn market to develop, but this will be our focus going forward and the quality of the products is building our recognition with architects and specifiers,” said Mike. The floor of the stand at Domotex demonstrated their commitment. The range ‘Shades’ uses a demanding manufacturing process with a two-ply, high/low yarn to create a graduated shaded effect in any of the 14 colours available – it is one of the most interesting and distinctive commercial carpet tile designs we have seen.
“We have not been known for tiles but this is a major change in our business and we plan to make a big splash”
There are 11 tiles in the current collection, primarily using solution dyed nylon to create sharp, clean colours. The ranges that are marketed in the UK have additional warmer, softer shades to complement the more corporate blues and greys of the European market. DOMOTEX 2014 City speak from Beaulieu’s Ideal Beaulieu’s re-designed the Ideal brand for the UK residential market last year and continue to develop its appeal with intelligent product development. The launch of Metropole was a key event at Domotex , a trendy collection of solution-dyed nylon carpets for the urban fashionistas. Metropole is based on a city nightlife concept and comes with a ‘city guide’ that shows you around the four ‘districts’ of different designs: Luna, Mercury, Twilight and Saturn. Moods, a fashionable combination of pinstripes and plain co-ordinates in both bold and more subtle designs and colours, will be launched this Spring under the ‘Ideal for Landings’ banner. A 2-ply loop pile in wool-look offering a wide range of combinations, suitable throughout the house. Beaulieu is also building on its established best-sellers with a colour overhaul in 16 shades for the popular Dublin Twist range.

Cunning plan from Foxi Foxi is best known for its popular anti-slip matting for rugs but the business is about to be boosted following two years of development for a new product that can transform flooring installations. Foxifix is a 2.5mm adhesive fixing felt that brings benefits of fast, glue-free fitting together with underfoot comfort and impressive sound insulation. “This is the best product for the UK market,” says Etienne Franck of Foxi & Graph. “It saves time and works well across all flooring surfaces, even grass.” The felt, available in 1 and 2m widths, has particular benefits for installations where protection of, and access to, the sub-floor is important and where floorcoverings may need to be removed. It is also perfect for temporary installations for events and high quality exhibition flooring.

Upper class underlay Some people just want the best – and Ball & Young just want to make it better! After the heady success of the smart Connoiseur range from Cloud 9 launched in 2012, the company has now added more density to create a ‘post-recession’ premium range. It’s been named unashamedly “Cavier & Champagne” and is available in a 9mm 15m2 roll and 11mm in 10m2 – it’s getting a little heavy at this density for 15m2 in the 11mm! “It sounds a little extravagant but retailers will know that some consumers will come in and just ask for your best underlay,” says Ann Shaw of Ball & Young. “Now you can trade them up a little further.” The underlay is launched this month and Ann reported that the first people who saw the product in Hannover, bought it in quantity. “There is a growing buzz about the UK market,” she said.

More details on these products will be reported in The Stocklists later in the year and visitors to The Flooring Show Harrogate in September, when the new products will be launched to the flooring industry.

Readers’ Survey
Am I still your favourite?!?
Wool is back!... but will it boost your business in 2014? Wool brands are expecting a bounce-back in sales after difficult years for natural fibre that has seen polypropylene gain market share.
Several years of price uncertainty put manufacturers on the back foot with wool, an issue that coincided with a period of intense innovation and product development for synthetics - including brisk business in wool look-alikes - or rather ‘feel-alikes’. Cormar has re-launched 80/20 Home Counties. “Wool twist has always been big business for Cormar and UK retailers in general, and with the economy appearing to have turned a corner, we feel that now is the right time to re-launch Home Counties,” says marketing director, David Cormack. Meanwhile, leading wool brands including Kingsmead, Manx, Gaskell Woolrich have trumpeted the WOW initiative, the Wool Owners’ Warranty to reinforce and underwrite the cleanability of wool.
But has wool lost too much market share already? Dramatic improvements in polypropylene and polyamide yarn has moved it from poor man’s flooring to the carpet of choice after intensive marketing and the easy care promise of the bleach bottle that consumers are quick to understand. The Stocklists readers survey this month asks: • Is wool business better for margins? • Is 80/20 still the safest sell to UK consumers? • Has PP knocked wool off its quality perch? • Is the natural/synthetic price gap too narrow now? • Are consumers confused about what’s on offer? Inform the industry. Let us know what you think and we’ll publish the results next month. Visit www.thestocklists.com and click the survey banner - it only takes 3 minutes!
And, of course, Prince Charles has added to the momentum with the Campaign For Wool.
Flooring forecasts accelerated market growth
The flooring market is forecast to achieve growth of 8.7% between 2014 and 2018 according to Carpets & Floorcoverings, a new Market Update from business intelligence specialist Key Note. While the wooden/laminate flooring sector is likely to continue to observe strengthening growth over the next few years, Key Note estimates that the total carpet and floorcoverings market has struggled somewhat in recent years, with a depressed property market and the sluggish economic growth following the recession continuing to put a downwards pressure on sales. As such, Key Note estimates the market to have grown by just 4.1% between 2009 and 2013; with consumers increasingly opting for low-cost, value alternatives due to squeezed household budgets. However, 2013 has seen both the economy and the property market begin to strengthen once again, aided by the introduction of the new Government-backed home-buying scheme, Help to Buy, which is already thought to have stimulated growth within the property market and the construction sector. Such factors are likely to lead to increased demand for carpets and floorcoverings over the next few years, with the total market forecast to achieve growth of 8.7% between 2014 and 2018. Growing consumer preferences for continental styles of flooring, such as wood/laminates and tiles, is continuing to gain market share within the wider carpets and floorcoverings market; while traditional types of flooring, such as carpets, are fast falling out of favour. Wooden flooring has become increasingly on-trend in recent years. The wood/laminates and tiled flooring sectors are both expected to continue to observe accelerated growth over the next 5 years, with flooring made using sustainable and recycled materials likely to represent particular areas of opportunities for manufacturers and retailers, driven by an increasingly environmentally conscientious consumer base in the UK. www.keynote.co.uk

Show biz is brisk in Birmingham
Flooring exhibitors reported brisk business at the Interiors UK show – the last to be held at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre – and visitor numbers were up 15% to over 21,000 on 2013 figures. For flooring suppliers, the event gives access to new audiences in the interior design and specifying sectors. Several leading rug companies such as Mastercraft, Asiatic, Oriental and Rama showed new ranges and designs for 2014 and Furlong Flooring used the event to launch their latest best-selling range, Sahara and Oasis. Next year, Interiors will be re-named as The Furniture Show by its organisers UBM and held in London’s Excel Centre in May. This is not to be confused, of course, with ‘The NEC Furniture Show’, a rival event recently announced by the Birmingham venue after they lost the UBM’s business – this show will remain in the January Interiors slot at the NEC. How the furnishing and flooring industry will make up its mind which or both of these shows to attend is not yet clear – though the London venue may be interesting to higher end suppliers who have long complained about the lack of a quality Southern event to exhibit at.
Asiatic goes soft on shaggies If you need to know which way the rug market is growing, look at the latest brand names by specialist Asiatic Carpets – Plush, Diva and Satin. Yes, it’s all about super soft, deep and luxurious shaggies that consumers can curl up with. Plush was launched last year in 12 colours and six sizes, including a circle. “It has been one of our best sellers,” says UK sales manager Steve Crooks. “It seems everyone wants soft and deep.” So Asiatic has been building on this success with complementary products among their latest launches, pictured here with business owners Freddy and Sharon Kelaty and Steve (right). Diva is going to be well received – it’s a lower pile polyester shaggy in 14 colours which has been engineered at a lower, entry-level price but with a weight and density that suggests a lot of carpet for the money. The Satin range is a sleek new addition to the collection in three colours with an ultra-soft touch and Asiatic have also introduced Tula, a polyester plain in 12 colours. T 020 8800 2000

Furlong’s focus on success The reasons for Furlong’s growing success in the market is ably demonstrated by the launch of their latest best-selling range under the Regency Carpets brand – Sahara & Oasis. This is an entry level product but Furlong’s attention to detail ensures it ticks all the boxes in terms of product performance and presentation. It’s a PP with the EasyCare credentials in 4 and 5m and a choice of felt or action back, available as cut lengths or rolls. Sahara has a small square design while Oasis is honeycombed. “It’s a nice sell for the retailer,” says Furlong’s Neil Valentine. “We introduced this in December and sold out before we could even advertise it. Now we have re-stocked and are expecting it to be one of the season’s most successful products.” Furlong’s focus on saleability is carried through into the imaginative POS which has a stepped sample display with each range shown in opposing colours for maximum effect, and a new hanging, eye-catching bleach bottle with the cleanability message. Mastery of modern rug trends Mastercraft live up to their name in the business of selecting the rug products that are going to succeed in this competitive market sector. Their mastery of touch and texture is demonstrated in the key launch at Interiors UK of the Mammoth range of luxurious, chunky deep pile shaggies in ultra soft polyester. The range runs in five sizes and eight colours, some of which are plain and others two tone – our favourite of which is the pastel ‘Marshmallow’ colourway. “We focus on serving the independent retailer with rugs we know they can sell,” says Robert Dickson. “We are pleased to see some steady growth coming through in UK retail at the moment – and the higher quality ranges are doing better business in recent months.” Also on show were the latest colours in the hugely popular Twilight range and the newly launched shiny shaggy Evermore with microfibre polyester yarn technology for extra softness which is run through with a shiny thread for extra depth and interest. For traditionalists, Mastercraft were showing their very new Farahan range of heatset polypropylene wool-look wiltons – a rug with an authentic touch of natural fibre and an expensive appearance that isn’t reflected in the competitive pricing - pictured here with Robert Dickson, one of the family who owns the business. Oriental originality Oriental Weavers used the Interiors event for the debut of Kelim, an original, craft-oriented rug range with a mix of chenille and cotton with rich designs and a set of coordinating cushions which are not only an effective sales add-on but give retailers an extra option for in-store display. Also on show was Imperial, a range of beautiful hand-tufted rugs in 100% wool from India which are available in five colours and in a range of seven sizes including a halfmoon and circle shape. Oriental’s designer Lesley-Ann Donnell (pictured left)who works at the company’s base in Leeds said demand was strong for the traditional designs with fresher, paler colours coming through in flooring fashions for 2014. Cameo role stars for LDP The Louis de Poortere stand was a hive of activity throughout Interiors UK, as visitors caught a glimpse of the newest releases and existing ranges of elegant rugs and broadloom products from the well-known manufacturer. Both new rug collections were met with much enthusiasm as the charisma of the vintage rug ranges worked their magic. As an easy way to achieve a comfortably worn in and antique look straight from the shelf, the uniquely distressed ‘Old-Old’ texture of the new Cameo and Fading World collections proved extremely popular. Many visitors were charmed with the gentle appeal of the Cameo range of rugs in delicate pastel hues, and just as many were seduced by the darker, mystical designs of the new Fading World range, Medallion and Old Kilim. Coming in eight standard sizes and with a non-slip backing as standard, both collections signify an extension to the amount of colourways now available. With hues ranging from gentle Pistachio and Cream Tea Yellow, to Imperial Jade and Atlantic Deep, Louis de Poortere rugs offer both subtle and bold ends of the colour spectrum. Also attracting much attention were rugs such as Pink Flash, with a cloudy, shabby texture set alight with vivid colour threads for a contemporary twist on a beloved vintage classic. In broadloom, an exciting and elegant new suitcase presenter displayed the rich colourways and superbly soft, dense construction of Louis de Poortere collections with a dedicated page for each range. Numerous additions have boosted the array of shades and textures already available, meaning Louis de Poortere now offers an even stronger assortment of sophisticated carpets for residential and commercial applications. Released early last year and previewed at September 2013’s Flooring Show, six exclusive new Louis de Poortere styles Urbanite, Catkin, Willow, Superbirds Velvet, Superbirds Comfort and Super Hermes also garnered plenty of interest from visitors. “It was great to see such a positive response to the new Louis de Poortere ranges from a broad range of customers,” comments Alan Russell, Louis de Poortere. “Some newcomers to the brand commented that our portfolio is distinctive in offering a diverse range of colours, showing both excellent quality and high style, which is exactly what we aim to achieve.” T 01505 615663 60 March 2014

Spring in step for Brighton show
“It is clear that retailers across the southern counties and beyond, would welcome the return of the spring show in Brighton,” says Stewart Crofts of Norcro after the announcement of the re-launch on the event. Under the event’s strapline of “What The World Walks On Tomorrow,” the organisers propose that exhibitors use the show 3rd – 5th of March next year to present their new designs and ranges to both the domestic and contract markets.
Stewart comments: “Spring is the traditional time that the housing market picks up and generally consumers decide to either re-decorate or refurbish their homes,” he says. “The timing allows manufactures to get samples and stock of their new products to their customers by April. This gives retailers a new sales opportunity and something new to show the consumer.” Following discussions with some of the Industry key players, Norcro took the decision not to allow exhibitors to book large stands - meaning that all exhibitors have a more level playing field. This strategy will allow exhibitors the opportunity of supporting their customers in the South, whilst keeping costs under control, resulting in a more profitable, valuable and altogether worthwhile sales and marketing exercise. The other equally important advantage of this strategy the organisers hope is that an affordable Brighton will attract more exhibitors and therefore more visitors, so the Industry as a whole will benefit. As far back as the seventies, the floorcoverings industry supported Brighton in the spring and Harrogate in the autumn. Buyers and retailers have always liked the more intimate friendly atmosphere that these trade shows offer, rather than the NEC or London. An important element of the show will be the contract market. and with Brighton being only an hour away by train from central London, it is easy for busy contractors, facility managers, interior designers and specifiers based in the capital to visit in a day. “With an improving UK economy, unemployment falling and consumer confidence returning, Norcro believe that the timing of Brighton is right!” says Stewart. Carpetright’s new warning
Carpetright has warned that profits this year will fail to meet City forecasts because of an expected loss at its business in the Netherlands. But like-for-like sales in the UK increased 1.9% in the three months to 25 January but they fell 6.3% in the rest of Europe, including the Netherlands, taking currency movements into account. Issuing the second City profit warning in four months, Lord Harris, executive chairman of Carpetright, said: "Trading in our rest-of-Europe business continues to be dominated by the extremely difficult economic conditions in the Netherlands.” Harris said trading in Britain was also difficult, although UK profit should be in line with the group's expectations and more than last year. The weak UK trading comes despite a revival in the housing market and mortgage approvals, which usually signal an upturn for Carpetright's business.
Mr Tee sponsors golf! Mr Tomkinson will sponsor the 2014 Kidderminster Carpet Manufacturers National Golf Tournament in aid of the Furnishing Industry Trust (FIT) and Macmillan Cancer Support. The iconic industry brand takes over from sister company Georgian Carpets who had been the sponsor since 2004. This year is the 58th year of this extraordinary event that has stood the test of time with the undiminished support of the UK carpet industry. It has raised over £1.2 million since its inception and it remains one of the biggest individual contributing events to FIT and is greatly appreciated by Macmillan. This year’s event takes place on Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st May at Kidderminster Golf Club. Day One is a four ball team event while Day Two is a 2 ball team event. Commenting on his hopes for the event, Tournament Chairman Shaun Lewis of Victoria Carpets said: “We are indebted to Mr Tomkinson for stepping in to support this wonderful event. Even when the industry was on its knees, it has continued to muster up support for those less advantaged and it speaks volumes for our industry and its generosity.” Mike Dobson of new sponsors Mr Tomkinson said: “We are delighted to take on the sponsorship of this popular event that is pivotal to the welfare of our industry charity. I hope now that things are beginning to pick up on the business front that we can welcome back some old friends, as well as welcome new ones, in May. It is such a worthy cause.” For tickets and further information, please contact Shaun Lewis on 01562 749 300 or email him at shaun.lewis@victoriacarpets.com

Flower on Flooring Wood working wonders The appeal of wood grain in various areas of interior design shows no sign of diminishing and this is further emphasised by the introduction of new designs within the UK flooring market.
Flooring Direct’s oaks are firm favourites
A reliable sign that manufacturers are confident of increased activity within any given sector is investment in new designs. The popularity of wood grain flooring can therefore be identified through the various new products described below, allowing retailers to offer their customers the most up-to-date options to match the latest trends. One of the latest introductions to the UK market is the Empire collection by BerryAlloc of oak laminate AC5 class 33 wood flooring. Its main features include four-sided bevel design and extra thick planks of 11mm, including Best Loc X-Treme joining system. Designed for use in bedrooms, living rooms, entrances and kitchens, Empire includes a choice of eight colours of Dessert, Elegant Light, Rainforest, Millenium White and Naturel, Frosted, Saffran and Venice oak finishes. The collection also benefits from a lifetime guarantee for residential installations. The Empire collection from BerryAlloc
“As a parting note, engineered wood now seems to be taking a real stranglehold, chiefly because the advent of click-systems are turning wood from a professionally fitted product into the realms of DIY.” Green Tree Distribution managing director Kevin Lapthorne says his company stocks a wide range of Krono Original wood flooring from Kronospan. “A new collection called Vintage Classic has quickly established itself as one of the fastest moving stock products we have ever had since being launched into the UK in the autumn of 2013.”
UK Flooring Direct commercial director Josh Ashby says: “Thanks to our coverage of the UK, we are always in line with the latest trends and there is no doubt that oak is still the firm favourite among homeowners, though we are witnessing a more adventurous spirit in the finishes and grades that are being chosen.” He states that best selling designs include refined mid-tones, with rustic grades that highlight the patina of oak combining with darker, caramel shades also gaining favour. “Vanilla and polar whites are the antithesis to this, offering a lighter look that looks just right in more contemporary and minimalist settings,” Mr Ashby continues. 64 March 2014

Saw White, which combine light and dark options from a pale beige-white hue to a rich conker tone. “Wide boards in long length formats, with designer surface treatments, are key trends going forward into 2014. Grey tones and whitewashed floors are very popular, as are tactile, hand-distressed boards,” Mr Booth concludes. Further innovation can also be seen from leading UK wood flooring manufacturer and distributor Anbo International, which has recently announced a UK supply agreement with Meister of Germany for its Lindura, described as surpassing ‘all known engineered wood floors’. Anbo states that Lindura provides the ultimate in engineered flooring by using the latest technology, including an 11mm wood composite base with a 0.6mm real wood top layer, bonded with Meiser’s patented dry powder process for unrivaled durability and stability, even for boards of 2.4m length by 270mm wide. Providing ‘unbelievable impact resistance and durability’ means Lindura is ideal for high traffic and commercial applications. The Masterclic Plus system also makes installation quick and easy, with the finished result ready for immediate use. Furthermore, the brushed and oiled wood veneer can be cleaned, oiled and maintained in the usual manner.
Kährs on trend with Oak Saw White
The collection consists of four handscraped decors, he continues, which have the authentic look of a handscraped plank and creating the impression of being sculpted by hand. The chestnut has striking knots and small imperfections, giving the laminate an aged, vintage look. The 10mm panels are suitable for heavy domestic and medium commercial use, have a 30-year guarantee and are supplied with an anti-bacterial coating. “It’s a top quality product and available from Green Tree Distribution, along with an extensive range of other Krono products,” says Mr Lapthorne. Kährs (UK) country manager Harvey Booth describes the trend for artisan distressed and coloured finishes as a “huge move away from the mainstay flooring of the last decade.” Advances in finishes have steered the change, he says, transforming wood floors to become a key interior design element. His company has introduce three wood flooring designs to its Artisan Collection, reflecting these trends, made in Sweden from sustainable European oak and featuring its eco-construction method. The latest introductions include Kährs Oak Concrete, with a grey-tinged natural oil finish, along with Oak Saw Brown and Oak
