New Vivendi

Any room. Any life. At Associated Weavers we’re kicking off 2017 in the

way we mean to go on, by launching a brand new name in luxury carpets this Spring. And, because it’s

so special, it’s supported by the appeal of a completely new yarn, iVivo. Developed exclusively for the Vivendi product, iVivo is a new solution-dyed nylon fibre representing years of industry-leading

work by our designers and technicians. They have combined their talents to ensure a product that meets every requirement of today’s daily life –

primarily, the need for versatility coupled with superior stain resistance.

Our demand for ultimate comfort all around the

home now means that yarns have to be created

that are both supple and pleasant for bare feet, yet tough and durable enough to withstand outdoor

footwear in the most heavily used rooms – and that means the ability to keep its pristine appearance without staining damage. Welcome new Vivendi into your home now and it’ll become a friend for life.

Exclusive iVivo yarn, developed for today ’s living

New Vivendi. Cleverly designed with your home in mind. Vivendi was created to meet the increasing

consumer demand for products that perform

faultlessly in every room in the home. That’s why we call it stressfree carpet.

Vivendi features our FusionBac backing which

means that, as well as being extra-warm underfoot, it’s easy and economical to lay. It’s also

bleach-cleanable for improved durability. Two ranges will be launched: Vibes, a 1695gm twist in

14 subtle colourways like Baby Powder and

Sandy Taupe; and Soul, a 2205gm Saxony in 14 equally fashionable hues ranging from Blanched Almond to Windsor Tan.

New Vivendi. The sensible choice for a hard life of wear and tear ahead. So confident are we that Vivendi will meet – and exceed – your expectations, we have given it our best-ever double warranty assurance of 25 years for stain and wear issues. Its practicality is also

assured because widths include 2, 2.5, 3, 4 and 5m variants to make laying as economical as possible. Our unique iVivo yarn has been formulated to resist stains in heavy wear domestic situations,

so it is also ideally suited to contract use. The nature of the yarn, coupled with its FusionBac

backing, makes it the ideal choice for installation with underfloor heating. For tough, versatile

carpets, Associated Weavers keeps on going from strength to strength.

the popular primo plus easy-clean range from leading uk manufacturer, cormar carpets, now comes in eight brand new plain colours – making a total offer of 18 fashionable home furnishing shades.

One of the most successful easy-clean twist carpets of recent years, Primo Plus is stain resistant and bleach cleanable and comes in four and five metre widths. going to any lengths

f. ball’s Styccobond f49 hybrid pS vinyl adhesive, has been used to install luxury vinyl tiles in a swimming pool viewing gallery at the littledown centre in bournemouth. the area is subject to temperature change and excess humidity due to having large areas of glazing and being adjacent to the heated swimming pool. extreme temperature fluctuations can cause vinyl floorcoverings to expand and contract over time, leading to tenting and gapping. The innovative formulation of Styccobond F49 limits any movement and holds the floorcovering firmly in place. The adhesive also delivers the instant grab and extended open time associated with pressure sensitive adhesives, which, until now, hasn’t been available for temperature tolerant adhesives. Status Flooring of Poole were contracted to install the 170m2 luxury vinyl tiles in the leisure centre, to replace the previous, worn, carpet flooring. Firstly, the carpet floor tiles were removed and Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayment was applied, to create a smooth subfloor. To fit the luxury vinyl tiles, Status Flooring used Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS vinyl adhesive. As well as offering instant initial grab and high bond strength, the water-based adhesive has been specifically developed for use in conditions, which are subject to extreme temperature fluctuations as low as -20°c and up to +60°c, such as conservatories or heavily glazed areas and is suitable for use over normal underfloor heating systems. The pressure sensitive nature of the adhesive allows it to continue to build up strength following initial application. In addition, it provides an extremely strong water resistant bond, allowing it to be used in areas subject to water and high humidity, including wet rooms. T 01538 361 633

carpet meets landfill challenge

more carpet waste in the uk was diverted from landfill in 2016 with 142,000 tonnes that were reused, recycled or recovered for energy, according to latest carpet recycling uk figures. This 14% increase on 2015 (125,000 tonnes) represents a diversion rate of 35% - up from just 2% in 9 years. Around 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arise each year in the UK. Energy recovery increased by 35% compared to 2015 as the use of carpets as a renewable fuel source in cement kilns continues to replace fossil fuels in this growing sector. A 50% increase in capacity for municipal energy-from-waste facilities over the past two years has also contributed to greater use of carpet waste in renewable electricity and energy generation. Commenting on their latest achievements, CRUK Director Laurance Bird acknowledged ‘outstanding support’ from core funders and members who want to ‘make their businesses more sustainable’. CRUK’s core funders are Cormar Carpets, Lifestyle Floors/Headlam, Desso, ege, Milliken, Balsan and Marlings. Laurance commented: “These core funders lead the industry in demonstrating extended producer responsibility for carpet throughout its lifecycle. Thanks to their commitment and support, we are continuing to advance sustainability within this sector and drive growth in recycling capacity.” Interest in recycling carpets is strong, he revealed, with more than 500 enquiries handled by the CRUK team in 2016; reflecting greater awareness generally that carpet can avoid being landfilled. CRUK’s membership has also reached a record high with 97 members from across the carpet recycling supply chain, including manufacturers, raw material suppliers, recyclers, retailers and machine manufacturers. Taking Inspiration to the Floor

integral to the event are the inspirational installations that show the latest trends in flooring.

a new spin on the more tailored patterns emerging in flooring with our tailoring installation is supported by Savile row. pinstripes, herringbones and houndstooth in shades of grey and blue reflecting men’s suiting, these mix beautifully with plain colours. for the more dapper, a flash of paisley or a vibrant stripe will allude to a patterned lining, vibrant choice of tie or colourful silk square for the top pocket. our second theme is ‘geometry’ - the trend for bold patterns in strong colours reflects the mood for geometrics in interiors. the designs are often inspired by traditional tiled floors and suit contemporary or more classic design schemes in either barely there shades or statement colours.

“our aim is to provide visual content for our visitors that will assist them in their day-to-day business and make a dynamic contribution to their visit to our show. this event is all about wool carpet, its quality, performance and creative style, we hope to enthuse those people that promote it every day,” bridgette added. As we have all seen in the last few years greige is the new beige.

Beauty, breadth Brintons

Cormar will also showcase its range of in-store display options, trade portal and point of sale material.

In its Wool Rich product, grey/ beige is still Victoria’s most popular colour with grey hot on its heels in terms of sales by colour. While in its synthetics products this is the reverse with grey being on top. Victoria’s stand at the show will be reflecting these colour trends and showing the spread of colours over the product offer. Victoria is also seeing from its sales of colour that customers are becoming bolder and confident with the use of colours and addressing this trend is the launch of New Tudor Twist. “What could be more Distinctly Victoria than our flagship 80/20 Wool rich twist collection in 42 tones from subtle beiges to bold statement colours with 6 smart and striking loop stripes, in coordinated colour combinations,” says Victoria. Also featured will be the impressive Wilton Raschel collection in three exclusive designs with a coordinating plain in 4 colourways made from 100% New Zealand Wool. All in all, well worth visiting Victoria’s stand to see the display of trend colours and other product on offer.

Brintons Bell Twist range has been refreshed for 2017 with New Neutrals, in stunning soft muted shades that complement the current trend for elegant and refined interiors. The additional colours were created to be a soothing and calming influence in the home, providing the perfect backdrop for creative interiors. Also don’t miss the chance to see the complete QuickWeave series - targeted at the contract market this woven axminster range offers a short turnaround time of just 6 weeks, ideal for installers and hospitality clients who are working on assignments with tight deadlines. Hundreds of designs are available in 5 colourways each with a choice of quality specifications from 7 to 11 row.

January 22-25. NEC, Birmingham

Get the season started Flooring boosts the flagship furniture show with initiatives, innovation and awards The January Flooring Show at Birmingham’s NEC strengthened its position as the seasonal opener for the UK flooring industry with a host of new launches in carpets, vinyl and LVT. The Flooring Showcase in Hall 2 featured leading UK manufacturers including Abingdon, Associated Weavers, Axminster, Balta, Brockway, Cavalier, Cloud 9, Crown, Edel Telenzo, Flair Rugs, Furlong, Interfloor, SMG, Westex and Victoria as part of this major event comprising more than 500 exhibitors across interiors, furniture, beds, lighting and décor. The Furniture Show has gained strength in recent years and has re-established it’s position as a trend setter for the sector. In 2016, the organisers worked with the SMG buying group team to establish a dedicated space for the flooring industry. “The show is looking better and better now,” says event director Stephen Richards. “You can see a lot more confidence across all the interiors sectors and flooring has made a great contribution to the development of the event.” And flooring provided some showbiz buzz in Birmingham with the attendance of footballer and actor Vinnie Jones as part of the promotion on the Crown Floors stand (see below). Other key events for the industry at the NEC was the UK debut of Associated Weaver’s Vivendi solution-dyed nylon product range (page 41), Abingdon’s new super-soft polyester Lasting Romance, the latest in their Love Story collection (page 43) and Furlong’s full roll-out of the enthusiastically received Solitaire soft-touch (page 42). In wool, Axminster introduced their new designery Hazy Days range offering 30 different patterns across eight colourways (page 45). And Flair Rugs won a prestigious first place award in the show’s ‘Décor’ category for their New Jersey Print collection (page 44).

A tough act to follow! Crown Floors

The official trade launch of the new Deacon Jones by Crown Floors collection was at the JFS. The legendary football and movie hard man Vinnie Jones met visitors, signed autographs and revealed the reasons behind his decision to join forces with friend, Danny Deacon, and Crown Floors, for this exciting new carpet concept. As Vinnie explained to guests, he has always had an interest in interiors thanks to his father’s business, and when lifelong friend Danny approached him about a potential collaboration with Crown Floors, he could not say no, especially as the final carpet collection could share the same characteristics that had marked out his successful career. Vinnie Jones is pictured (centre) with Danny Deacon (left) and Geert Vanden Bossche of Crown.

Geert Vanden Bossche, Marketing Director, Crown Floors, recounts: “When Danny approached us about the potential tie-up with Vinnie Jones we jumped at the chance. We spent many months working with Danny and Vinnie to come up with the final choice of eight collections, with each carefully chosen with Vinnie’s characteristics in mind. Therefore, by choosing four X-Tron extra-strong polypropylene fibre ranges to mirror his tough image, and four super-soft fibres spanning polypropylene and polyamide to reflect his softer side, we knew we had the perfect portfolio to support our route to market. Feedback before, during and since the show has been overwhelming and high street consumers can look forward to seeing a lot more of Vinnie in the coming months!” T 0800 077 33 01 www.crownfloors.co.uk

Review 2017 Vivendi sets the pace for 2017 Associated Weavers

Associated Weavers became the innovative market leaders for the soft sector and have now made another major move that will set the pace in the market with the launch of Vivendi – a go-anywhere solution-dyed nylon collection. There is some recognition that the success of soft has inevitably been concentrated upstairs in the home. “Vivendi moves the latest carpet innovation downstairs and indeed everywhere in the home to give retailers more opportunity to make better sales,” says AW’s Steve Elliott. Vivendi is based on a AW’s new tenth-gauge solution-dyed nylon fibre called iVivo which comes with a Fusionbac backing and impeccable performance credentials - colour fast, bleach cleanable, 25 year stain warranty and with a wear guarantee of 25 years. Vivendi has two ranges - 50oz Vibes and 65oz Soul, both are available in 2m, 2.5m, 4m and 5m. The collection is aimed squarely at people who used to look for a good quality 80/20. “We feel that we have made the perfect carpet product with Vivendi,” says Steve. “There’s nothing out there quite like it and it has really hit the spot with the first retailers who have seen it.” Soft is still going from strength to strength with AW. Also making their debut at the NEC was Magnificus, a flagship range in the Invictus collection. A dense, tenth-gauge heavyweight, this carpet is “as good as it gets for soft, high performance polypropylene” says the company. T 01422 431100 www.associatedweavers.net

Doing it with distinction Distinctive Flooring

For people who struggle to differentiate the suppliers in a crowded LVT market, one company has certainly written it’s proposition into its name – Distinctive Flooring. “Well, we do aim to be a little more distinctive so it keeps coming up in conversation,” says National Sales Manager Jay Taylor. “A lot of companies say they want to do things a little differently. For us, we want to do it distinctively!” Those who saw the company’s amazing floor display at Harrogate can’t fail to agree and while the installation on a smaller stand at the NEC was less dramatic it was no less fashionable or thoughtful. The “half-bonded” oak floor you can see in the foreground of our photo is a very classy but simple effect created from a 9” x 3” plank from Dinstinctive’s popular Vintage Parquet collection which is available in six colours cross-aligned with a oak plank from the Signature collection cut in half. “Exciting flooring is partly about the interest within the original product and partly about what you do with it on the floor,” says Jay. “And we’re always happy to swap ideas with retailers, designers and installers who want to do something Distinctive!” T 01274 655694

Contemporary contract Cavalier Carpets

Cavalier Carpets has many strings to its bow and alongside the highly reputed residential ranges, the company has a strong position in the contract market – accounting for half of all its sales. Confetti Trends and Space Style are established 80/20 favourites in the commercial sector, but as always, constant innovation is at the core of its business activity so Cavalier came to the NEC with a selection of new introductions and a couple of prototypes. The latest launches are Classic Herringbone and Classic Pinstripe, smart, well-defined 80/20 cut pile patterns which are very contemporary. The prototypes on show in the same series are a Houndstooth pattern and the geometric Pinnacle and Cavalier is taking soundings on these before a possible market introduction later this year. But outside these stock ranges, Cavalier points out that the majority of its contract work is custom across contemporary and tradition styles – if you have a few minutes, check out the gallery of Bespoke designs on Cavalier’s Commercial website and prepare to be inspired! Fashionable for family life Furlong Flooring

Furlong are flying high with Solitaire – the super-soft star of their new Essenzo collection which was launched at the end of 2016 to great acclaim for its superb appearance and high performance credentials. “This is one of the fastest take-ups we have ever had to a new launch – there has been a marvellous reaction,” says Neil Valentine of Furlong. “It has a beautifully soft touch and smart appearance.” Available in 12 colours and 4 and 5m, the new range is rolling out its second wave of sampling to selected independent retailers this month. Solitaire is the start of the company’s new Essenzo collection of soft-touch polypropylene carpets “with the performance for family life” and new ranges will be added during the year to build on it’s success. Furlong has also launched a fashion update across the colours of its Sahara & Oasis range to extend the sales appeal of what is already one of its best-selling ranges. Lovin’ it Abingdon The love affair is never over at Abingdon – it’s still going strong…. and soft! The launch of their polyester super-soft Lasting Romance and it’s heavier partner Deep Feelings was a major market event. “It was one of the best launches we have ever had and interest has snowballed from there,” said Abingdon’s Midlands sales manager Gary Sheard. Next up in Abingdon’s Love Story collection is Loving Touch which, as it’s name implies, is a little lighter and also has a subtle heathered effect. The range was premiered at the NEC event in six colours and it will be launched during March. More colours will be added later in the season. The company isn’t just loved-up, new launches at the show included a heavier ‘Deluxe’ weight in 11 colours to add to the popularity of Rustique, launched to great acclaim in 2015. Smart roll ranges are something of an Abingdon speciality and they have just upgraded Rhapsody with two extra colours in the grey zone and with a cut-length service in 4 and 5m on secondary backing in addition to the felt-backed 4m roll. Its sister product Tempo is the heavier weight and also gains the new options on colours and cut lengths. T 01274 655662 www.abingdonflooring.co.uk

Pedigree products Victoria Carpets

Victoria is fizzing with fashionable new products that it has been introducing into the market over the last few months to make a real impact on retailers looking for something special. Lining up at the NEC event was Lasting Luxury 9503, the new tenth gauge solution-dyed nylon product that has created a real buzz around the promise of good-looking luxury with robust performance. Lecterns for this 4m range are rolling out right now. In the wool department, Victoria’s flagship 80/20 product Tudor Twist is showing off its brand new range of 42 colours. “This is a pedigree product which really stands out,” says national sales manager Joe King. “The visual impact is just fantastic.” Still in the posh product department, Victoria still enjoys a strong following in the designer market for its wilton ranges which have a beautifully fine finish. Three designs in four colours are launched in the Victoria Wilton range together with the latest Rochelle collection. And if you can’t decide between wool and synthetic, perhaps the most interesting 50/50 in the market is the new Herringbone in the Rustic Jewels collection (pictured here with Joe King) which is absolutely on trend for design and texture. Box clever Edel Telenzo The successful launch of Edel Telenzo’s Rugs & Runners, and accompanying point-of-sale, in 2016 was recognised by the Furniture Awards judging panel, who commended the collection for its stylish flexibility in the highly competitive ‘Décor’ category. Custom flooring on a new level, homeowners can pick from an entire broadloom stable and turn any design into a rug or runner of their own shape and size. Edging choice can also be specified, with no fewer than 88 options on offer, with materials that include linen, felt, cotton and real leather, in a 1cm or 5cm width. This caps what is a truly bespoke experience from Edel Telenzo, and one that drew a significant audience at JFS. “We knew that the January Furniture Show audience would be very keen to explore the Rugs & Runners concept, and its convenient point-of-sale viewing box,” explains Mark Rooney, UK Sales Director. “We’re always thinking of new ways to make the customer experience more friendly, and we’re delighted that our efforts were recognised by the Furniture Awards judges as well as interested retailers.” Also on show for those visiting the Edel Telenzo stand were updates made to the brand’s wool and wool-blend carpet portfolio. Plains, linear stripes and clever patterns were all presented, demonstrating Edel Telenzo’s commitment to providing not only exceptional performance, but also wideranging choice in wall-to-wall design. Winning by design Flair Rugs Birmingham’s NEC played host to a very successful January Furniture Show for Flair, the Derbyshire-based rug specialists walking away with a win in the esteemed Furniture Awards. Taking first place in the ‘Décor’ category was the New Jersey Print collection, an award that proves Flair’s desire to produce trend-leading design is wholly worthwhile. This committed approach has taken the brand to an exciting new level, with New Jersey Print the epitome of Flair’s output across the last 12 months. It was the collection’s vivid Birds design that took the headlines, with the judging panel deeming them “well priced, on-trend and promising mainstream appeal”. The judges comprised a host of respected names from the worlds of furniture retail and design, so this was no mean feat. They also described New Jersey Print as “offering fashion at an affordable price”, and appealing to many with its “highly sellable” nature. Gareth Davies, Sales & Marketing Director, (pictured right) comments: “It’s been a fantastic January Furniture Show for Flair Rugs, and once again the exhibition has proved the perfect place to commence our 2017 activities. This has obviously been capped by the award for New Jersey Print, especially when you consider the strong competition we were up against in the ‘Décor’ category. Our in-house design team deserve all the credit coming their way, and this award demonstrates the part they play in keeping us at the tip of the trend curve.” T 01457 850660 www.flairrugs.com

Forward thinking SMG The SMG buying group can take credit for bringing the flooring industry into the January Flooring Show following a successful collaboration with the organisers three years ago and this forward thinking approach is at the core of the business. “We are a very marketing-led organisation,” says chairman Chris Moffat. “We have worked hard to build a really comprehensive package to support retailers and help them do better business in competitive times. As a result I think we are very positive for the future and there is increasing interest among retailers in our approach.” Apart from creating a top quality product portfolio from its preferred suppliers, SMG covers a lot of bases for its members including preferential marketing, insurance, finance, vehicles and a host of other benefits. Chris has announced that SMG board member Mike Reed will step into the role as Head of Group Operations while Director of Marketing Ben Young (pictured here at the NEC) will be leaving for pasture new. Instant appreciation Interfloor Never mind all the marketing, Interfloor wants consumers to put their best foot forward and see for themselves how good a good underlay can be. A ‘silent salesman’ is selling the top Tredaire underlays in the form of a modern point-of-sale sample which lets customers try out the product. “If people can feel the difference it can transform their perceptions – it’s instant appreciation,” says Interfloor’s Anthony Dawson. “In most stores there’s a tombola that just doesn’t earn its keep. For the same space you can have a unit that creates opportunities for extra sales,” says Anthony. “If you can increase your conversion rate on underlay by just a few percent – and encourage trading up to a top quality product – that can add up to a lot of money.” The unit ships with the flagship Tredaire Colours Red as its sample underfoot but also presents six key ranges plus a handy room guide for the correct underlay selection. Natural Style Axminster Carpets Axminster Carpets latest inspirational collection, Hazy Days dominated their display at the NEC. Woven in Axminster, Devon, using the finest wool this carpet not only offers customers a wide choice of designs but also a naturally high performing carpet. “These carpets respond to our customers requesting something that is luxurious and stylish and is also good for the environment,” says Sales Director Jonathan Young, “Customers love Hazy Days as it offers beautiful patterns that can transform an interior into a vibrant space.” He’s right – 30 different designs, available in a selection of muted greys and pinks, the collection includes the most fashionable small designs and geometrics plus some more traditional, subtle florals which means that Hazy Days has something to offer everyone. And it’s made to order in just four weeks – all the cachet of a custom carpet, without the wait. T 01297 32244

Premier league products Associated Carpet Group

The Associated Carpet Group has established its reputation as one of the most progressive buying groups in the sector, and this may account for the fact that it has the fastest growing membership. ACG is a non-profit making group which prides itself on the family values and independence of its members but it’s highly commercial in the marketplace. “We are very product focused,” says ACG’s Richard Moore. “We aim to select products that are ahead of the trend and offer retailers extra opportunities to get the best quality sales – the premier league of products. “We are working closely with suppliers and we’re pleased to see that they are being more ambitious about adding real value to their ranges,” says Richard. The benefits are seen not only in their portfolio of ranges from preferred suppliers but in ACG’s sophisticated own-label offer which looks increasingly coherent and attractively presented. ultra-fine innovation

arguably one of flair rugs’ most innovative rugs concepts to date, Skyline gel, a 100% polypropylene ultra-fine weave is proving a major hit among retailers and consumers alike.thanks not only to timeless looks, this impressive collection is packed with a host of practical qualities resulting in a portfolio of styles ready-made for today’s busy lifestyle.

Skyline Gel makes perfect use of hardwearing fibre and a Super Micro gel non-slip backing, making it suited to all areas of the home including kitchens, hallways, conservatories, utility rooms and porches. Skyline Gel allows homeowners to safely enhance their interior’s style, these rugs and runners sticking in place even when heavy residential footfall passes through the space in question. “Skyline Gel is a really exciting collection for us,” explains Gareth Davies, Sales & Marketing Director. “We’re always striving to ensure our rug portfolio covers all bases for all people, and in combining timeless looks with a practical construction that includes a thoroughly tested non-slip backing, we’re certainly doing this. What’s more, unlike other non-stick backings, when lifted, Skyline rugs do not leave a sticky residue meaning homeowners can conveniently move the rug from room to room without worry.” The Skyline Gel collection is available in six natural tones, from alluring browns to cool greys, and is produced in two alternative weaves: the diamond Petronas, or the perpendicular forms of Pinnacle. Joining the six colours are six sizing options, including two runners at 57cm x 230cm and 67cm x 300cm, meaning Skyline Gel can be seamlessly added to rooms of varying shapes and sizes. These underfoot choices are also safe to lay on underfloor heating and machine-washable for the owner’s convenience, but above all else are soft, warm and comfortable, even when graced with bare feet. Skyline Gel is typical of the Flair Rugs brand: a collection that not only makes for a stylish and practical addition, but one that also plays a key role in creating a welcoming home. DOMOTEX Hannover 2017 Review •

All change, apart from beige Carpet gets cooler, planks and tiles get bigger, patterns get zaggier!

TRENDS REPORT 2017 after taking the trend temperature at Domotex, the world’s biggest flooring show, we have to report the shocking news that ‘beige is back!’ Many will observe that it never went away, of course, but shades of greys have challenged the blur of beige that has dominated UK flooring for decades, and also pastel hues and some stronger colours have been doing well here recently. But greys came in from Europe initially and the continental drift back towards beige is a strong indicator of things to come. Annemarie Hadders of Edel Telenzo was one of the commentators in Hannover noticing this trend: “We’re starting to see Northern Europe going back towards beige and away from the greys now, and this trend may well be reflected in the UK, maybe not this year but next. And we see that natural colours are getting lighter.“ On one level, there’s nothing wrong with beige if that’s what consumers want – but an underlying issue is the risk that beige is ‘canvas carpet’ which is left down while other furnishings get changed around it. Much better if consumers change their flooring frequently in response to interiors fashions, of course. But there is plenty else going on in fashionable flooring. We reported last month on innovations at Domotex, so this month we’re taking a snapshot at design trends.

“We’re starting to see Northern Europe going back towards beige and away from the greys now, and this trend may well be reflected in the UK, maybe not this year but next. And we see that natural colours are getting lighter.” “UK consumers are looking for brighter, cleaner colours on the floor even though those colours will tend to be lighter shades,” says Steve Elliott at Associated Weavers. To coin a political phrase, there’s something of a ‘squeezed middle’ in current colour preferences. Mid-range colours seems to be less popular at present while the pastels and naturals are getting paler while dark shades and black do well in textile and hard flooring – though apparently consumers are less keen to pay a premium at this end of the spectrum. This colour trend is especially apparent in wood and LVT, as well as carpets.

Follow the trends in our Domotex reports 2017

This month: Trends report, launches and reviews - pages 50 to 57. Last month’s reviews are still online in our February edition at www.thestocklists.com

from the Stocklists

In the pattern portfolio, rumours of the death of the stripe would be greatly exaggerated as this is still a popular option for many consumers, but strong stripes are much less in evidence in the exhibition halls and interiors magazines. Subtle stripes are more common but it is zig-zag patterns that are increasingly popular, dove-tailing nicely into the trend in both textile and resilient flooring for herringbone styles. Wool carpets are looking really sharp in the design department at the moment with small format patterns, geometrics and textured patterns making the sector look very fresh and modern, and appealing to a younger affluent audience than is traditional for natural fibre. In wood and tile decors it’s size that matters. Planks are longer and wider, tiles are bigger – Beaulieu’s XXL programme across cushion floor, LVT and laminate is indicative of the trend as are Quick-Step’s Majestic laminate and Massimo wood. The promotion of innovative installation to make more custom floor patterns in the sector using a range of different products is making the sector increasingly interesting. March 2017 49

Feline fashions Balta

balta were celebrating their ‘roaring’ success of leonis at Domotex – the high-profile launch of a super soft set of carpet ranges which has been taken up enthusiastically by uk retailers. The distinctive branding with a lot of lions has been the ‘pride’ of Balta. Geert Vanden Bossche, Marketing Director, said: ‘We were confident of its credentials but even so the reaction to Leonis has exceeded all expectations.”

The first two ranges Sarabi and Sarafina were selling strongly in the pre-Christmas period with the flagship Sarabi offering a 20-year stain and 15-year wear guarantee and carefully considered colours in both ranges including the all-important greys and silvers. Following this strong start, Balta announced at Domotex that they will add two new ranges to the collection during 2017 – Simba and Kesari. Innovative product development is core to Balta’s strategy. Preceding the arrival of Balta’s polypropylene Leonis was the launch of Satino, the silky smooth luxury collection of polyamide broadloom and new additions to the collections were also showcased in Hannover including the lavish luxury of new Satino Valentino which looks as good as it sounds!

“We were confident of its credentials but even so the reaction to Leonis has exceeded all expectations.” Geert Vanden Bossche, Marketing Director Balta (Crown Floors)

“This will be a challenging market this year and our answer to the uncertainty is to increase our investment in both product development and marketing,” said Geert. “We’re optimistic that we will be putting retailers in the best possible position to make a success of 2017.” Soft is still going strong says Balta but there are also innovating innovations elsewhere with developments in residential carpet tiles (see page 38) and the showbiz launch for Crown Floors of a robust range of designer carpets under the Deacon Jones brand with footballer and film star Vinnie Jones lending his hard man persona to the tough performance of these products (see page 40). Away from broadloom, the energy and inspiration of Balta Rugs was much in evidence with no less than 1,200 options on offer at Domotex! Many new ideas were on show including the new Base flatweave collection, a significant extension of the washable polyamide New Generation collection and lots more in multi-colour loops and new constructions in the ever popular soft, plush Shaggy rugs. Overall, Balta’s got it beautifully covered! T +32 5662 2211 www.baltagroup.com T 0800 077 33 01 www.crownfloors.co.uk

Export excellence Interfloor interfloor is a genuine british manufacturing success story centred on its flagship brands Duralay, tredaire and gripperrods, but the full portfolio covers over 1,000 flooring products and c.20% of the company’s business goes to export. Interfloor supplies more than 400 customers in over 70 countries from its factories in England and Scotland and at last year’s Export Excellence Awards, it was winner of ‘Innovation in Exporting’ and ‘Exporting Excellence in MENA’. Most of the world’s best known hotels as well as numerous mosques, cinemas, casinos and airports use the company’s underlay along with tens of thousands of homeowners. So Domotex was an ideal occasion for Joffrey Godwin (pictured) who joined the company days before the show opened as Interfloor’s Head of International Sales. “We are delighted to welcome Joffrey to our team, “ says CEO John Cooper. “His insightful knowledge of international markets and the construction sector in particular will help us to further strengthen our award-winning support for international customers.” Duralay and Tredaire made their appearance at Hannover in their smart new livery and also boasted a range of technical improvements to boost performance. Duralay has been established as the contractor’s brand of choice and for use in more technical residential applications such as under wood flooring – the Duralay Timbermate range - and with underfloor heating – Duralay Heatflow. The Timbermate range actually outperforms many ‘acoustic’ underlays in the market, offering an in-room noise reduction of up to 30%. Interfloor has improved its world-leading Duralay Durafit System so that it gives greater dimensional stability due to its exclusive Bacloc backing and the latest high bond double-stick adhesives. “Durafit is considered by many carpet manufacturers and installers as the leading contract underlay system,” says John. “It has been fully proven with sales to date of over 24 million square metres. We have improved its already superior performance, made it even easier to install and given the brand a refresh to reflect it’s world class reputation.” Meanwhile increasing demand for flame retardant underlay for commercial installations such as public buildings, hotels and ships have led Interfloor to further build on its expertise in this area with products including Tredaire FR7 and the IMO (Maritime)-certified Tredaire Flamecheck and Duralay Counterflame. DOMOTEX 2017 review The ‘homeowners carpet’ Cormar Carpets cormar’s product development team have been busy responding to the performance challenges of a highly competitive market in synthetic fibres and showed visitors to Domotex two new ranges that are likely to have a major impact in 2017. Launched this month is Highland Saxony, a quality deep pile, heavy weight polypropylene heather, with a sturdy, rustic feel to it, available in 13 colour options. “Soft and silky, lustrous carpets are really popular at the moment, with the Sensation ranges and the new Soft Focus range selling well for Cormar. Yet notwithstanding that, we feel that Highland Saxony offers something to another audience – one that is looking for a more matt, non shiny look, still with a deep, soft handle.” says David Cormack of Cormar. “Highland Saxony has a rustic, tonal look, achieved by using a new 3-colour yarn to get the contrast – that combined with an extra heavy pile weight makes it a real ‘homeowners carpet’.” Also on show for the first time was ‘Soft Focus’, the silky Saxony launched at the beginning of the year which is manufactured from Cormar’s Finesse polypropylene which uses a two-fold yarn with extra filaments to get the luxurious effect. Brand values Condor

condor has seen the success that branding has generated for key carpet ranges elsewhere in the market and provided a polished presentation of its new soft carpet collection under the brand name intenZa. “Strong branding and smart marketing is more and more important for us and for retailers,” says Paul Harris. “IntenZa has had a great response from the market and we will be building on this excellent start later in the year.” Launches at Domotex in this collection included Ultimate, a clean polypropylene twist in 20 colours; Serano in 14 colours at a Classic weight of 1,250 gsm and a heavier Elite weight of 1,920 gsm; and Sakura, a fine pinpoint yarn in 14 colours. A name with a much older pedigree is Stainmaster, America’s most trusted carpet brand for more than 20 years, which Condor will now be producing for the European market at its factory in The Netherlands. These luxurious cut-pile carpets for high-end residential consumers are made from 100% Invista solution-dyed nylon to deliver a highly resilient, easy-to-clean fibre with a soft, luxurious feel. Amongst this grandeur, a striking statement piece using new Ultimate Expressions from Avenue Floors greeted visitors to the cushion vinyl area of the stand, with the new on-trend Audrey décor a fitting example of the exciting new additions for 2017, as Victoria Hemelaer, Brand Manager, elaborates: “Domotex 2017 was a special one for the IVC Group. It marked 20 years since we formed and we wanted it to be a celebration not only of our anniversary, but also of design. As Brand Manager of Leoline and Avenue, I was especially proud that our new Audrey décor took pride of place as a high-impact display on the stand. I am extremely excited about the launch of this new style, along with the other new additions to the Avenue and Leoline collections, and now look forward to seeing them in stores across the UK.” Among the exhibit were the 10 new styles that comprise Ultimate Expressions, along with the reveal of six new decors that bring ofthe-moment looks to the existing Titanium XT collection; both are now being rolled out across the UK.

Luxury goes large Quickstep

Quick-Step’s latest laminate goes large with the majestic collecion which meets the growing demand in the market for longer wider planks with impressive autheticity and peformance. The company were leading this market with the iconic Largo range but Majestic goes further with water resistance, ‘true-to-nature’ decors and a new bevel technology. The range is now available in ten contemporary decors – from vintage and reclaimed to rustic and smooth – with matching textures and is the most luxurious laminate flooring ever from Quick-Step with a planks size of 2.05m x 24cm. The commitment to innovation, quality and service is underpinned by Quick-Step’s parent Unilin’s investment in a new €10 million production facility in Belgium. Through the introduction of new manufacturing technologies, Unilin’s laminate production process increasingly focuses on automation and data exchange to build a ‘smart factory’. “Ultimately, our goal is to deliver the right product, to the rhythm of our clients. Only by doing that, will we remain at the forefront of the flooring market.” says Ruben Desmet, General Manager Laminate at Unilin. “Creating innovative, qualitative products and offering impeccable services is a continuous process.” The trend towards extra large has led Quick-Step to follow suit in its hardwood collections with the launch of Massimo, the company’s longest and widest floorboards which are characterised by large knots and subtle cracks. “It’s no secret that we’ve always been obsessed with wood: its elegance and appearance, the warmth it exudes, its feeling to the touch, and the typical scent”, says Quick-Step Design Director Oke Nollet. “With our vinyl and laminate collections, we went out of our way to perfect the natural look. But with these Massimo floorboards, we took our passion to new extremes – from the size of the boards to the superior authenticity and craftsmanship in every single detail.”

DOMOTEX 2017 review Style statement Edel Telenzo

leading carpet and rug manufacturer, edel telenzo, made a real statement in style at this year’s edition of Domotex, showcasing not only new additions to its broadloom portfolio, but also unveiling its rugs & runners concept to a european audience. Rugs & Runners allows homeowners to choose any broadloom design from the Edel Telenzo stable, and turn it into a custom piece of their own shape and sizing. From here, the customer is invited to select from 88 unique edging options - spanning leather, felt, cotton and linen - in a 5cm or fine 1cm width. This represents bespoke flooring at its best, and with this in mind it’s little surprise the Edel Telenzo stand was one of the busiest at 2017’s exhibition.

Annemarie Hadders, Marketing Manager, explains: “Domotex has always been great to Edel Telenzo, and it’s fair to say 2017 has been no different. This has been a chance for us to network with existing customers, as well as to interact with many new faces, with visitors principally drawn to our fabulous Rugs & Runners concept. On the back of this, we fully expect the high interest levels enjoyed in the UK at the end of 2016 to be mirrored across Europe in the months to come!” Rugs & Runners was not the only collection on show, as Edel Telenzo took centre stage in Hall 5 of the Hannover exhibition venue. Also presented were updated 100% wool carpets set for an international customer base, with the chunky loop look a particular hit among those gracing the stand. Adding exceptional performance to trending colourways and patterns, including the classic linear stripe, Edel Telenzo continues to cover all bases in the realm of soft floor coverings. Luxury lustre Louis de Poortere

Star of the show for louis de poortere was undoubtedly haute couture broadloom, a collection that has already gained big traction among uk retailers throughout last year. for 2017, this is set to continue with haute couture offering designs in three stunning fibre blends. First, Haute Couture’s underfoot offering - taking inspiration from Morocco, Scandinavia and beyond - was presented in 100% wool for an unbeatable lustre and high quality performance in both residential and commercial locations. For those seeking other fibre blends in their wall-to-wall choice, CP (cotton/polyamide) and CW (cotton/wool) were also placed in the limelight, displayed in an innovative POS box that helps to lower in-store footprint without compromising on impact.

Visitors were not left wanting for choice in underfoot design, as Louis de Poortere also introduced them to new lines in rugs. These included the contemporary Atlantic Ocean and Atlantic Surf, still comprising the typical engineering quality of Louis de Poortere, but also a new-found contemporary aesthetic. For those preferring classic design, much akin to the Belgian manufacturer’s roots, new collections Fading World Generation and Fading World Agra Sur were on show with their recognisable medallions and motifs. LVT innovation awarded Earthwerks earthwerks received a coveted innovation award at Domotex – and much praise from visitors – for the new wood classic 9500 Series lVt collection which must rank as one of the most realistic in the market. The company was a pioneer of registered-embossed techniques (or “design-synchronous embossing”) back in 2002 and this latest collection takes the technology to a new level. “This exceptional décor exhibits a distinctive grain and colour nuance that can only be found in nature,” says Carine Czohara of Earthwerks. “The design-synchronous embossing is precisely coordinated with the wood grain to emphasise the unique textural look and feel of a real wood floor – we would defy you to notice the difference.” Wood Classic 9500 is a glue-down LVT available in eight matt colours. Fashion focus Asiatic Carpets

asiatic carpets has built an enviable reputation for the creativity and quality of its rug ranges but the “fashion focus” the company trades on has never been better expressed than through the launch of its own designer brand under the name katherine carnaby. “This has become a really strong interiors brand which has brought us a whole new set of customers in the interior design sector,” says Jeremy Nichols of Asiatic (pictured below). “We can be more creative and innovative and we have got a lot of recognition for leading the trends in rug design.” Asiatic has brought in five new ranges to the seven already in the collection, adding more texture, some new geometric designs and the very latest “serene” colours.

But as always, Asiatic have many more new ideas on show such as the handknotted range Langham and Onslow, a sophisticated woven shaggy with a subtle linear effect but our favourite was Mantra, a Mongolian lambswool natural hide which has to be the world’s softest and most luxurious sheepskin. fitters think big

the academy for excellence in flooring has updated master installer course content to accommodate Quick-Step’s latest extra-wide and extra-long wood and laminate floors.

Introducing Majestic laminate and Massimo engineered wood, the Master Installer course has been refreshed to include these new formats, so that fitters can experience the floors first hand before encountering them on-site. With large planks a key trend in interiors for 2017, Quick-Step is already experiencing strong sales for these new collections and so it was natural for the over-size planks to be included in course content. Lee Thompson, technical manager, said: “It’s important that Master Installers leave the Academy versed in the latest Quick-Step innovations and so we’ve updated the course to include the unique fitting requirements of Massimo and Majestic. With the right techniques, fitting large format planks can be up to 30% faster than more conventional formats, but it does require adjusting conventional thinking. Installing Massimo and Majestic requires no tapping blocks or pull bars and trying to fit this way is slow, aggressive and you risk damaging the planks.” Adapting course content to new product developments also helps Quick-Step to endorse all Master Installers through a two-year workmanship warranty no matter what the product, an important benefit that’s exclusive to qualified fitters. Along with a listing on the quick-step.co.uk website, this helps Master Installers to secure high-value work on a regular basis. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk 58 March 2017

Flower on Flooring

by Dennis Flower

Recycling boosts environmental credentials There is increasing focus on the recycling of products in the flooring industry, resulting in a reduction of waste sent to landfill - generating significant savings for many - while also adding to the environmental credentials of the companies involved.

the kenburn carpet crusher

arighi bianchi’s recycling award

in addition to avoiding landfill, the waste can also be used as a fuel for “waste to energy” says kenburn. landfill costs have increased by a staggering 250% over the past ten years to an average of £125 per tonne, the company advises. Solutions such as the Kenburn carpet crusher can help to dramatically raise recycling rates by compacting both old and new carpet and underlay waste, with additional services such as logistics advice on recycling the waste also available.

there is further good news for Scottish flooring retailers/ contractors in that 100% grant funding is available from resource efficient Scotland for this type of machinery.

proof of the effectiveness of this recycling solution m25 also received award recognition has been provided in the cruk annual award scheme where, in the past two years, both arighi bianchi and m25 have received awards for their recycling initiatives using kenburn’s products and services. Carpet Recycling UK says more retailers are recognising the business benefits of recycling uplifted waste carpet and offcuts. around 80% of members save significantly on waste disposal costs, including the 48 retailer members that diverted 4,000 tonnes from landfill in 2016.

this sustainable approach also helps to differentiate their businesses and appeals to eco-conscious consumers. for example, cullingford carpets & interiors now recycles its annual 100 tonnes of carpet and underlay waste and promotes its green credentials to customers, while aiming to recoup its carpet crusher investment in less than three years. from the Stocklists

around 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arises in the uk each year. core funders - cormar carpets, lifestyle floors/headlam, Desso, ege, milliken, balsan and marlings – support cruk’s drive to increase reuse and recycling. in 2016, the landfill diversion rate was 35%. Altro sustainability manager lampros litos says the flooring industry has been on the forefront of state-of-the-art recycling practices for the past 20 years, including the reprocessing of endof-life vinyl flooring into new flooring or other products. this altro service has been fuelling customer loyalty and at the same time safe-guarding our natural environment, he says.

"what may not be obvious is the effort that has been put into the design of recycling solutions that integrate efficiently with altro’s manufacturing system. this ecosystem is a unique feature of altro’s recycling practices," says mr litos.

altro’s granulator machine

his company’s recycling schemes operate continuously across the uk and europe to offer recycling and take-back services to customers, taking advantage of altro’s in-house capabilities and supply-chain operations to make sure that vinyl flooring does not end up in landfill, maintaining clean and tidy construction sites. Recofloor says it can assist flooring companies to reduce waste disposal costs by up to 75% by recycling waste vinyl flooring. the award-winning waste vinyl flooring recycling scheme was founded by polyflor and altro in 2009 to divert smooth and safety off-cuts and smooth uplifted flooring from landfill. there are now 700-plus recofloor collectors throughout the uk and ireland and more than 60 drop-off sites accepting waste vinyl flooring. material is recycled back into new products, including flooring. to date, the scheme has recycled well over 3,000 tonnes and volumes are growing.

the system is designed for all levels of the flooring supply chain, from individuals to the largest contractors, with participation also helping companies to differentiate their business.

middlesex flooring managing director craig gargan says: “recofloor membership maintains our presence on our clients’ tender lists as we can prove that we recycle our waste vinyl flooring.” For more information:

flooring defies retail gloom

furniture and flooring defied depressing reports of a slowdown in uk retail sales following publication by the british retail consortium/kpmg of statistics for January and Q4 of 2016.

Total non-food retail sales in January were virtually stagnant at just 0.2% growth compared to a 3.3% increase this time last year. BRC boss Helen Dickinson said: “After a strong end to the Christmas trading, year on year sales growth ground to a halt, compensated only by stronger furniture sales.” Paul Martin, UK head of retail, KPMG, added: “As is historically the case in January, furniture sales experienced strong performance, with the new year perhaps prompting shoppers to consider new look décor.” During the next few months analysts will be tracking the anticipated rise in inflation, exacerbated by the weakness of the pound driving up import costs. “With the signs pointing to upward pressures on shop prices given rising import costs, all eyes will be on the impact of inflation on consumer spending,” said Ms Dickinson.

“Secondly, one of our USPs is that we do things that others can’t. Through this, we want to encourage our members to shout about themselves so that they can ‘stand out from the crowd’. So, for example, the press ads we have developed are not your ‘run of the mill’ carpet ads. Rather they focus on the retailer and what makes them so different to their competition,” he said. The Carpet Foundation consumer website, which regularly gets over 3,500 individual visitors every month, has been refreshed with a new look and feel. Its primary aim remains to drive consumers to their local Carpet Foundation retailer. Content has been tweaked and new imagery uploaded. www.carpetfoundation.com

The post-recession, pre-Brexit boom?

BUSINESS

Is this a post-recession, pre-Brexit boom time for the flooring industry? The quick answer is no – sales are relatively flat for many sectors (though it’s a little early in the year still to comment) but the good news is that value appears to be on the up with stronger profits in many areas. Better products are commanding better prices and consumers seem more prepared to pay. Joe King at Victoria comments: “Price is less of an issue for the consumer at the moment. They want the right carpet first, and want to know the price second.” Victoria’s new Lasting Luxury range along with Associated Weaver’s launch of their Vivendi collection are cases in point. Both are solution-dyed nylon – high performance synthetic products selling at prices comparable to a good quality 80/20 – so substantially above the mainstream polypropylene ranges – and both being taken up enthusiastically by consumers. “There is less price sensitivity provided that the product has a strong story to tell,” says Steve Elliott of Associated Weavers. “Our job is to give retailers the tools to do better business and when the product benefits are clear, they can make a lot of progress with consumers.” David Cormack at Cormar agrees: “There is no future in making carpet as cheap as possible. Making it as good as possible is better business.” Richard Moore of buying group ACG says: “In some parts of the country where solid floors have become popular, even expensive carpet seems cheap. And we’re seeing suppliers putting more quality into their products and not just chasing price.” Anthony Dawson at Interfloor reports a similar trend. “After the recession, the industry was keen to introduce entry-level products to try to maintain sales in a tight market but now manufacturers have more interesting products that help retailers to trade up and get more profit from their sales.

“Consumers are not as price resistant as people think they are when better quality costs a little more.” H&V Carpets is typical of many suppliers who have been adding more technology and more fibre into their mainstream ranges. Johny Peeters said: “Retailers don’t want the comeback from entry-level polypropylene products and the good news is that consumers are not as price resistant as people think they are when better quality costs a little more.” The success of soft in the carpet market is a key demonstration of this effect. Carpets that are deeper and softer also need more help to perform satisfactorily. The extra effort in manufacturing and yarn development has cost manufacturers more – but there has been little resistance to passing on these costs through to consumers. Wool is having a good run in export markets and manufacturers are being emboldened to be increasingly creative with modern designs that appeal to an affluent younger audience. The economic factors are playing well for the flooring industry at the moment. The fact that the sky didn’t fall in after the referendum vote, contrary to a raft of ‘expert’ predictions, has given consumers more confidence. The weakness of the pound is helping UK manufacturers compete at home and boosting the appeal of exports and even the price rises that came through in 2016, though some were seen as opportunistic, achieved some measure of beneficial re-balancing in the pricing structure of the flooring market. The likelihood of inflation driving up everyday costs for UK consumers has the short-term effect of making them more accepting of price increases in general. The start of the 2017 season has good potential for flooring. Manufacturers are rising to the challenge and there is an expectation retailers can be more courageous with prices. So make hay while the sun shines! The blow-by-blow accounts of EU negotiations and jitters about a hard Brexit may erode sentiment once it all starts - and inflation may reduce consumer buying power.

Is flooring too cheap? Are we our own worst enemy in under-valuing flooring, driving the price lower to secure a sale? Is this sentiment on the turn with more expensive, better quality synthetic carpets, designer wool and higher performance resilient flooring? There has been increasing discussion in the industry that retailers are more price sensitive than consumers at the moment and that the post-recession era of entry level pricing is over and that consumers are willing to pay more. Of course, this optimistic window of opportunity may be short-lived. Will inflation fears encourage consumers to buy sooner - or just reduce their buying power? And do Brexit negotiations mean than 2018 may not be as positive as this year? Tell us what you think and inform the industry. Flooring factsheet from Interfloor Specialist underlays – wood & laminate flooring interfloor’s british manufactured specialist underlays for wood and laminate flooring offer some of the best noise reducing performance in the industry. the Duralay timbermate range includes the best-selling sponge rubber brands timbermate excel and Silentfloor gold, a premium underlay with an impressive 53 Sone rating, plus the hardwearing Duratex.

tests show in-room acoustics can worsen if inferior or lightweight underlays are used with hard flooring; putting a lightweight, air filled, cellular product under wood or laminate creates an echo chamber and more noise, whether it’s generated by scraping furniture, heavy footsteps or reverberation. While many products on the market claim to be acoustic underlays, their impact test results just don’t compare to the low noise levels of Timbermate underlays which reduce in-room noise by up to 30 per cent. Independent tests prove the Timbermate products, with their superior weight and density, significantly reduce acoustic noise levels and all have achieved low SONE ratings. Timbermate Excel is a 3.60mm gauge high density resilient rubber underlay; while the top end Silentfloor Gold is a 4.20mm gauge high density resilient rubber underlay. Both underlays feature Interfloor’s VapourStop membrane, which helps prevent moisture, and branded backing to help differentiate them from inferior copycat products. For installations where moisture is not an issue, Duratex is a heavy-duty 3.60mm gauge high density resilient rubber underlay that offers great performance and excellent value. Manufactured at Interfloor’s Haslingden site, the three products in the Timbermate range are rated highly in the LEED programme. The underlays are fully recyclable at the end of their life; contain not less than three percent pre-consumer recycled material and 5 LEED points are available if used within 500 miles from the point of production. They also meet or exceed the industry standard for indoor air quality as established by the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Green Label programme. And for the perfect finishing touch, Interfloor’s accessories include Stikatak edgings to suit all types of floor, including the 9mm Zig Zag which gives a neat transition between laminate/hard flooring and adjacent stretch carpet installation. Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world. 64

Flooring factsheet Underlay in a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. www.interfloor.com

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor.

www.carpenterunderlay.co.uk

Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. the degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 66

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS March 2017

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

of the committee

Why join? buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 68

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.
