Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED
WOVEN
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.
Level loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.
CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.
Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.
Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.
Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours. Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the
BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves.

Regular Maintenance Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur. Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers! Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet. Use only WOOLSAFE approved products WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.
The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.
Periodic Cleaning When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company. If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE approved products. Look for the WOOLSAFE Mark on the bottle or package. It is best to engage the services of a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning company. To get a really expert job done entrust the work to a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. These companies are fully trained, have been in business for a considerable length of time, are members of one or more recognised professional trade associations related to the cleaning industry and have a reputation for top quality service. And they use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents on your wool carpets and rugs!
If you have a problem with a carpet or rug that requires an independent inspector, a network of carpet complaint investigators, trained and registered by The WOOLSAFE Organisation is available throughout the UK and Ireland. WOOLSAFE Registered Inspectors have extensive experience in investigating the causes for carpet complaints based on their practical involvement with carpets and rugs over many years. They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers, retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can carry out or commission tests where required, and will provide comprehensive reports. To contact an inspector in your area call 01943 462127, email: inspector@woolsafe.org, or visit: www.woolsafe.org / Private Householder / Registered Inspectors

Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member •
Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see what you would actually use

Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Increase sales
• ‘Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support
Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with point-of-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Access professional services

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.floorwise.co.uk
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre THE BEST CARPET WOOL Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home. THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years. Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
SAFE
DURABLE
Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer. Safety Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly. Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites. Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING
SPROUTING
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
SAMPLES The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.
SHEDDING The original carpet tile
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
PULLED LOOPS
This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.
12
• shedding • pulled loops
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
SHADING
STATIC Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.
FADING ON WOOL Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

PILE REVERSAL
FLATTENING
(SEE SHADING)
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
INDENTATIONS When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
SOILING Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or
any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave
sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
INSTALLATIONS Telephone National Institute of Carpet Fitters (NICF) for further information – 0115 958 3077.

RALPH’S TOP TIP! Dukes, Reds, Talk Of The South, Faces... There was a time when every Friday night would find me rubbing my fleece round the legs of some lovely ladies on a sweaty nightclub dancefloor. Yet suddenly I find myself at home on a Friday night, is it my advancing years or could it be the installation of ‘Stay at Home’ Saxony back in the barn that is keeping me there? The luxury is sublime... I just can’t seem to tear myself away from this level of comfort... I really must be getting old... hang on, is that The Bee Gees I hear... You Should be Dancing...? It is! Where’s my jacket, I’m off...!

FULL SPRINT AHEAD FOR HARROGATE ! We’re looking forward to welcoming customers old and new to our stand at the Harrogate Flooring Show. Added attractions – over and above exciting new product concepts you can be the first to see – include the chance to win one of this year’s must-have gadgets, the iPad. And why not join us on Sunday afternoon from 4-6pm: we’re having a little soirée, with drinks and nibbles plus some musical entertainment from our very own sales director Robert Mulder!
JOIN IN THE ACTION We’re feeling quite patriotic about our aptly named gold stars of 2012 – Hampton Court, Highbury and Islington (and of course we’ve also got Greenwich!). We can see them running on for some while yet, as they hit just the right balance between quality, style and value. See these outright winners alongside other recent introductions Amoré and Casablanca and, for contract applications the Gelbacs Taurus and Balmoral – plus a selection of brand new concepts which will be revealed at the show. (Perhaps we can persuade Head Office to name our next ranges Stratford, Eaton Dorney or Weymouth, if they’ve forgiven us for pipping Holland to the Gold in the show jumping by then!)

BT DIDN’T LET ET PHONE HOME! Our move to new premises at the end of July went pretty smoothly – except for our telephone system! According to BT, they were faced with a huge backlog of engineering work as a result of the well-publicised floods in West Yorkshire earlier in July. As a result, the installation of our new lines was ‘bumped’ from July 24th until mid August, so for almost a month we were struggling with just two analogue lines in and out. We can only apologise profusely to any customers who had trouble getting through to us during this time. Fingers (and toes!) crossed Olympus Chelsea Chelsea that by the time you are reading this, we will be back to normal.

Get a life Lifecycle costs are the biggest bugbear of any flooring installation project. There are an seemingly unlimited amount of associated costs with floor fitting, but the revolutionary and fast-working TacFast mechanical fix system can help to eliminate these, leading to more cost-effective installations - great for budget-conscious and time-sensitive projects. As Jonathan Stone, CCO, TacFast Systems International, explains, “The anticipated costs associated with a flooring installation project can seem endless. Factors such as subfloor preparation, materials, labour, and even future replacement costs all contribute to the overall budget and can increase project costs massively. But with TacFast, many of these issues are removed, allowing contractors, specifiers and end-users to save money without compromising on quality.” A simple, speedy and cost-friendly way of fitting floors, TacFast consists of a unique LocPlate interlocking disc and plate system that sits above the subfloor and a hook and loop fastening system that rapidly attaches the floorcovering. TacFast often eradicates the need for expensive and extensive subfloor preparation, acting as a leveller and a DPM in one. In fact, the polypropylene LocPlate plates work as a water barrier to prevent any moisture migrating through the subfloor, avoiding any future expensive maintenance costs potentially caused by damp. The TacFast system does not require the use of adhesives with lengthy-drying times or unpleasant fumes, so it is instantly ready to go once the LocPlate surface is fitted. T 01527 919891

Very fit for purpose Commercial and residential vinyl flooring manufacturer Polyflor has announced that its products have recently been specified by Pure Gym Group Ltd. With over 30 operational sites here in the UK, the group have chosen to install Polysafe Vogue Ultra PUR in all of their gym changing room facilities. Simon Rouski, Group Facilities Manager at Pure Gym Group Ltd says, “We chose to specify Polyflor products at all of our gyms because of their hard wearing durability and their ease of cleaning. As a 24 hour operation, we need to feel safe in the knowledge that our floors will stand up to a lot of traffic’. Polyflor’s cutting edge PUR technology facilitates life cycle maintenance cost savings of up to 60% over a 15 year period when compared to untreated safety flooring using a micro mop maintenance regime. As with all Polysafe products, Vogue Ultra PUR fully complies with HSE and UK Slip Group Guidelines to give sustainable slip resistance throughout its guaranteed life, achieving 36+ on the Pendulum wet test (Slider 96/Four S rubber) with a surface roughness of 20 microns and above. Vogue Ultra PUR achieves the highest possible BRE Global Environmental A+ Rating in major use areas such as education and healthcare (Certificate No: ENP 336). Simon James, Marketing Manager at Polyflor adds, “We’re delighted to have been chosen by Pure Gym Group Ltd. We have a history of working in the sports and fitness industry and are delighted to see this trend continue with such a dynamic organisation”. T 0161 767 1111 www.polyflor.com
Ahead by a nose The safety of products is often an important factor of choice for brand preferences by architects, retailers and craftsmen. Due to this reason the German flooring profile developer and manufacturer Küberit adds to their internal quality management a further external control including certificates from a renowned institution. The TÜV Nord has recently certified many stair nosing profiles from Küberit. After the certification by the TÜV of the profiles 706 A, 706 C, 707 A and 707 C in the past, it was now the safety stair nosing profile type 708 N that received the TÜV certificate. Furthermore the Kombi stair nosing profiles (type 701, 702, 703, 704, 705 and 709) as well as the Reno stair nosing profiles (type 711 and 712) were approved by the TÜV. These high quality profiles were installed in retirement homes, rehab centers or other public places where safety aspects are a priority. The aluminium profiles are available in the standard lengths 5.0 and 2.5m and in 6 metallic colours (silver, gold, bronze, sand, stainless steel and aluminium polished). The Kombi and the safety stair nosings are countersunk drilled and are designed for exchangeable PVC inserts or even for 2 PVC inserts which can be purchased in 11 different colours. Energy boost Innovation in waste prevention, recycling and extracting energy from carpet waste were key subjects explored by international experts at Carpet Recycling UK’s fourth Annual Conference in July. New topics that generated a buzz among the 100 delegates in Birmingham included the conversion of synthetic carpet waste to oil and electricity, plus the creation of clean energy and power through gasification and pyrolysis techniques. The event attracted representatives from across the supply chain, including carpet manufacturers, recycling companies and organisations seeking outlets for their carpet waste. This year’s packed programme again provided information and inspiration for all sectors of the carpet waste supply chain with presentations covering new developments from leading carpet recyclers in Austria, Italy, Germany and America as well as the UK. Notably, the event also demonstrated an increase in higher grade and higher value re-use and recycling options. Three parallel ‘breakout’ sessions proved popular, including a talk from Dr Laszlo Kondor, Managing Director of Austria-based Kemia Handels und Projektierungs GmbH (pictured below). He highlighted two Hungarian plants that use a thermocatalytic conversion process to produce up to 6,500 tonnes of heavy oil annually from mixed plastic and rubber wastes. Generating electricity from carpet waste was another interesting outlet development introduced by WREL (Worldwide Recycling Equipment Ltd). T 0161 440 8325

Quick steps forward Next month the Quick-Step Academy for Excellence in Flooring will welcome 16 young apprentices through its doors, marking the beginning of the academy’s commitment to providing the flooring industry with fresh new talent. The state-of-the-art flooring academy has teamed up with Skills To Group Limited, (formerly PSC Training & Development Ltd.), an Ofsted Outstanding training provider, to ensure that Quick-Step apprentices undergo rigorous training, development and assessment processes in the academy’s impressive 6,880ft2 space. The apprenticeship scheme is Government-approved and supported by the National Apprenticeship Service. Assigned a designated training coordinator, apprentices will receive first class benefits and unrivalled support from Quick-Step as they work towards achieving a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Floorcovering Occupations and a Level 2 Technical Certificate in Floor Covering. Training will fit flexibly around employment and learning modules include subfloor preparation and set up, health and safety and building customer relationships. There are a wealth of benefits for businesses that decide to take on Quick-Step apprentices. With training costs of 16-18 year olds supported by the Skills Funding Agency, Quick-Step will do all the hard work, including advertising for, interviewing and recruiting motivated trainees. There is even a 2-week trial period to ensure both parties are completely happy. As Darren Robinson, the academy’s training and development manager said: “There are so many bright, young and motivated school leavers looking to kick-start their careers, this is a fantastic opportunity for retailers, installers and contractors to snap up an apprentice and grow their business.” T 0845 073 8485

UK first for Carpenter Carpenter has launched a UK first – an underlay recycling scheme, as part of the company’s increasing commitment to the environment. The scheme works by providing Carpenter wholesale recycling volunteers with wheelie bins, specifically for PU off-cuts and uplifts. The wholesaler is then encouraged to provide fitters with recycling bags, also provided by Carpenter, to fill with Carpenter product which can then be returned to the wheelie bin, where it is collected to be re-used. At the company’s USA division between 50,000 and 100,000 tonnes of uplifted polyurethane underlay is annually recycled, with the UK division hoping to following suit. Helen Rowberry, national sales manager for underlay at Carpenter, (pictured right) said: “This recycling scheme is a UK underlay first. This is a no-hassle alternative to costly skips and escalating landfill charges. “We want to encourage as many Carpenter wholesalers as possible to get involved and show their commitment to the environment. All the off-cuts and uplift collected is used to produce new underlay, which can be continuously recycled.” The underlay recycling scheme is just one of the environmentally friendly initiatives Carpenter operates. All its underlay is produced using recycled material and is backed with high-performance polyethylene, which aids recycling more effectively than paper backing. As well as this, the company’s Fireseal division collects used Fireseal mattresses from public prisons, which are then converted into underlay. This scheme is expected to save the prison service more than £5 million over five years in disposal costs. T 01457 861141 www.carpenter.ltd.uk 42 September 2012

HarrogateGuide The fresh, new flooring show! More highlights “Being ‘off the shop floor’ enables me to have discussions without distraction about building relationships and how we can move forward.” Steve Pearson, Astra Carpets
The Flooring Show, Harrogate, takes a fresh new look at the sector as it opens its doors to the industry with more than 120 leading companies from 10 countries on show alongside an innovative event schedule. A host of ideas from the new management team, backed by fresh investment and strong exhibitor commitment, are reinvigorating this year’s event. Beyond the new launches that are a feature of exhibitors at the show, the organisers have built a programme around the event that is focused on creating opportunities for visitors to improve their business For the retail sector, an expanded seminar programme will focus on assisting flooring retailers to build their businesses in difficult times - including a new feature on store displays. For the commercial sector, a dedicated one day conference programme based on leading case studies will meet the CPD requirements of facilities managers, specifiers and installers. Wendy Adams, Flooring Show Director, said: “We have designed the event to be essential and unmissable - we have made sure that visitors can enjoy opportunities to gain a real advantage for their business.” As the only UK event exclusively dedicated to the flooring industry, it’s the one place and time when the whole sector gets together, making it the ideal opportunity for visitors to see their current suppliers, meet new ones, network, and learn about new products and launches.
Creative store displays in Hall C will feature three specially commissioned creative sales displays and the props used can then be reproduced by retailers. Designed by Laura Casey and co-ordinated by Joanna Ramsden of Wools of New Zealand, these displays will provide some amazing ideas for creative but simple shop window and interior displays that can help inspire consumers and highlight the important role flooring has in the selection of other domestic features such as wall coverings, curtains and furnishings. The seminar / conference programme for the retail / domestic sector has the theme: Increasing the profitability of your business in tough times and the keynote address will be by ‘retail champion’ Clare Rayner with the theme: Enhancing your retail presence. The UK’s first conference dedicated to commercial floor coverings will be hosted at the show with the theme Best practice, shared knowledge aimed at facilities managers, architects and specifiers, specialist installers. In a coup for the organisers, the creators of the Olympic Stadium floorcovering for the London 2012 Opening Ceremony - the Le Mark Group - will give a case study presentation on the project.

‘50 Shades of Beige’ After the saucy success of the best-selling novel Fifty Shades of Grey books, Regency have come up with an unashamedly cheeky promotion of their latest (pattern) book, ‘50 Shades of Beige’ – another best-seller! The UK manufacturer is making a serious point as well – the Regency collection distributed by Furlong Flooring has been successfully developed in recent months with the most contemporary range of beige shades which remain the UK’s most popular choice, of course, for carpet - so the best beige wins the biggest business. On show at Harrogate will be the new colour options for the Regency brand leader Satisfaction range together with the smart new illuminated lectern that presents the collection to best effect. Stairrods in top trim Stairrods preview their New Premier solid brass trims which includes a Double-Z naplock, a single naplock, and a 38mm cover plate in 9 finishes. John Raine was particularly proud of the 'Double Z' design which allows the fitter to 'dress down' the carpet, which until now has been impossible with current solid brass profiles on the market. The 'Double-Z' also reduces the need to stock both a Double and a Z trim, as a groove in the base allows the fitter to peal off one side when fitting carpet to laminate. Stairrods have used their extensive knowledge of finishing brass stair rods and put this to good use. The new Premier Trims will be available in chrome, satin chrome, pewter, brass, antique brass, satin brass, antique bronze, satin nickel and polished nickel. Production estimated November. Green and clean For retailers looking for high-performance and resilient carpet that also offers exceptional environmental benefits the extensive range of SmartStrand carpets from Mohawk is a smart choice. Offering exceptional environmental benefits, SmartStrand carpet fibre is in part derived from corn. The manufacturing process also offers a reduced level of environmental impact when compared to an equivalent amount of nylon, so carpets made with this fibre are an ideal choice for retailers looking to attract ecologically conscious consumers. SmartStrand fibre delivers unique performance properties that will have farreaching appeal. Suiting the busiest of homes, SmartStrand carpets offer lifetime stain resistance so are great for areas prone to stains and spills. In fact, SmartStrand is the only carpet with built-in stain and soil resistance that will never wash off, and it is easy to clean with just water. SmartStrand carpet is exceptionally soft, too, with twist pile textures that feel luxurious underfoot. Available in a seemingly unlimited range of colours and styles, homeowners can choose from warm deep tones to soft pastel hues. With a variety of POS displays that explain the unique SmartStrand manufacturing process, retailers can be sure that this carpet will catch the attention of consumers. Rhys Davies Carpet Logistics Covering the Nation The UK’s largest independent carpet and flooring delivery specialist Rhys Davies Carpet Logistics (RDCL) will be exhibiting for the fourth year in succession at The Flooring Show Harrogate on 2-4 September.
Experience
Cost Effective and Flexible Solutions
Rhys Davies’ involvement in the carpet industry began in 2004 when it stepped in to help Belgium-based Associated Weavers following the demise of its UK distribution company. RDCL assumed responsibility for distribution within six weeks of being selected, with no previous experience of carpet distribution.
Recent expansion of the specialist fleet with new vehicles and overnight trunking trailers, and increases in the delivery frequency have seen RDCL become the ‘go-to’ network for all flooring delivery requirements including rolls, cuts, rugs, pallets, point of sale, samples and accessories. The application of variable pricing versus more traditional ‘fixed cost’ fleet options has proven immensely attractive to RDCL customers who have all achieved a significant return on outsourcing.
Eight years on, RDCL is firmly established as the UK’s leading carpet and flooring distribution network, handling nationwide deliveries for nearly twenty of Britain and Europe’s top manufacturers and distributors.
National Coverage Utilising the RDCL depot network, with nine locations in Andover, Barnsley, Birmingham, Cardiff, Haydock, London, Newton Aycliffe, Rainham and Whitburn - Scotland, carpets and flooring are collected from the UK and mainland Europe, and then received into the nearest depots. The carpets are then checked, sorted, and loaded for delivery or overnight trunking to another RDCL depot as appropriate. Once at the delivery depot, the rolls and cuts are loaded onto the specialist dedicated carpet delivery vehicles. Deliveries are made on a nominated delivery day to the entire mainland of the UK, without reliance on sub-contractors. Each postcode region receives deliveries on the same named days each week.
Frequent Deliveries Successful growth has meant that delivery frequency has continued to increase, to the point where most UK postcodes are serviced twice or three times per week. Typically upto fifty percent of consignments are now delivered next day, with over ninety five percent of consignments delivered within three days. Although a large proportion of deliveries are to independent retailers, RDCL also deliver to contractors, out of hour’s contractors and residential addresses.
RDCL continues to invest in IT systems to improve service levels. Orders are usually received via EDI, and this information is then used, along with product barcodes, to track the life cycle of the carpet from point of collection right through to point of delivery.
Export and Import The network has also seen growth in the export and import of flooring products globally by road, air and sea. Recent examples include exports to Afghanistan, Canada and Australia and imports from the USA, China and India. All these are handled by the carpet team using Rhys Davies’ Freight Forwarding division, providing confidence and accountability at all stages of the process.
Expansion 2013 will continue to see more developments and improvements in the breadth of services offered. Experienced and skilled staff supported by a nationwide logistics network and robust IT systems means that your carpets and flooring are in good hands. Why not join RDCL for a no obligation chat at Stand M6 at Harrogate to discuss your logistical requirements. Hall M Stand 6

Greendale - 50 years young And going strong! The only true "Buying Group" in the industry is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, but Greendale's origins began in furniture. On the 10th May 1961, a small number of quality high-street furnishers, all of whom were members of “The Good Furnishing Group,” met to discuss what was minuted as a “Swedish Furniture Buying Project.” Discussions with manufacturers went well and a few months later in the early months of 1962 a dedicated company was established to handle the administration of the bought in products. The company, called Sworda, quickly branched out into carpet and fabric buying, and the eleven initial members became affectionately known as the “Green Group” because of the green paper used to distinguish documents from others being handled by Findlater Smith, one of the founding eleven whose staff administered group business.. In latter years, the three parts split into separate entities as the business and membership grew with the furnishings side becoming Minerva, fabrics disappearing and floor coverings continuing as the Green Group with its own membership, board and operation. From these beginnings, the Green Group - now known as Greendale Carpets & Floorings - has grown to a multi-million pound 120 member co-operative, with its own warehouse and operational centre in Hereford. Greendale employs 14 staff covering sales ordering, accounts, customer service, merchandising and warehousing, and stocks over 2,000 rolls of carpet from all the main British and Continental manufacturers.
points and the latter more expensive specialist areas. The range covers all main product types with Tufted Twists, Velvets, Saxonies and Loops, as well as Woven ranges in wool and manmade fibres. The group also sources its own exclusive range of UK manufactured Wool Twists which offer members outstanding value and enhanced margin opportunities. Members are given their own areas to enable them to promote and exploit the brand and feature the ranges on a wide range of bespoke Greendale branded instore units. All supported by Greendale’s merchandising team and twice yearly visits from agents. An annual show and dinner for members and suppliers takes place with over 250 people at last year’s event and this year’s likely to be even larger.
From Hereford, carpets are cut and shipped to members all over the UK; from the Orkney’s in the north to the Channel Islands in the south, and Northern Ireland in the west to Cromer in the east. The members own the group which is run on a “not for profit basis” meaning that all savings negotiated are passed onto members. Obviously by purchasing rolls these are substantial. The group supplies over 100 ranges of carpets all renamed to colour level and marketed to members under the Greendale and Elizabeth Grieves labels with the former covering the main mass market price
66 September 2012
Greendale has a website with details of the group and its philosophy together with consumer information on flooring types, care and maintenance, however, ranges and pricing are not shown allowing members to retail them with confidence. A wide package of other benefits include membership of BIRA (the British Independent Retail Association) which offers a range of support services for independent retailers. The group also provides members with a package of other support which is shown on the member area of the website. With the growth of the internet, the group’s policy on membership and product rebadging is becoming even more relevant to today’s independent retailers and as the group enters its second 50 years, the future is looking bright for Greendale. The Group welcomes interest from retailers who share its ethos. Tel 01432 852000

Flower on Flooring News News Happy with the heavies Despite the difficult economic conditions that have continued this year, heavyweight carpet continues to prove popular, providing retailers with healthy margins and their customers with a product that gives satisfaction for appearance and performance. Martin Peace, sales and marketing director of Abingdon Flooring, says that whilst the economy is suffering and market conditions are challenging, the obvious conclusion would be that prices are being driven down and carpet demand is therefore at the budget end of the scale. The company finds, however, that there is a growing demand for quality, luxury carpets as long as they deliver value for money. Abingdon’s Indulgence lives up to its name
The choice of 50, 60, 70 and 80oz products in heathers, plains and textures are continuing to turn into best sellers. “People are voting with their feet and they are usually bare feet at that,” says Mr Peace. Geert Vanden Bossche, Balta Group marketing director, says: “Now more than ever, homeowners are demanding carpets that Balta’s Exclusive Shaggy offers offer supreme quality long lasting quality and style, and top-end ranges are becoming even more popular as consumers look for long-lasting quality over cheap fixes. “Our Shaggy Exclusive design allows retailers to cater to this demand, supplying customers with opulent carpet that has that all-important timeless appeal. With the current popularity of shaggy styles too, Shaggy Exclusive is set to captivate homeowners with its ultimate underfoot comfort and on-trend look.” Shaggy Exclusive has a pile weight of 3.2kg/m2 and is available in nine shades, with a lavish pile height of 3cm. Crafted from 100% highquality two-ply StainSafe polypropylene yarn, it is also bleach cleanable, says Mr Vanden Bossche. “With impressive seven-year wear and 10-year stain safe warranties too, retailers can be sure that this is a carpet set to have widespread appeal,” he concludes.
It states that a good quality two ply polypropylene saxony with plenty of twist in the yarn both handles well and has the practicality of being ‘stainfree’, the perfect combination when combined with fresh colourways and a reasonable price tag. Furthermore, a growing number of retailers are selling more of this product type and receiving good customer feedback, providing the confidence to sell more heavyweights and continue the upward trend. An ‘unmistakable touch of class’ in Axminster’s Botanica
Richard Lawrence, Axminster Carpets group head of marketing, says: “We are famous for our quality and many of our retailers benefit from this reputation, with consumers attracted to the natural appeal of wool and the craftsmanship and pride. Whether tufted creations such as the Devonia collection, or our beautiful woven Axminster styles, each carpet is made to the highest possible standard and will endure years of use.” The company controls every aspect of production, from sourcing 90% of its wool from British sheep, to processing its own yarn for its Devon factory. It is this attention to detail that gives Axminster Carpets an unmistakable touch of class, says Mr Lawrence. “Our patterned woven Axminster carpets offer homeowners a stunning array of styles,” he continues. Traditional patterns, delicate florals and Arts and Crafts inspired carpets combine with contemporary pindots, staccato stripe and oversized plaids, complemented by Axminster Carpets’ in-store presence, quality, style and diversity,” says Mr Lawrence. Charles Annable, Brockway Carpets managing director identifies an important, cash rich segment of the market that is interested in premium end of the market heavyweight carpets, despite the economic difficulties. “We’re catering for this demand with new product launches including our latest Solar range,” he says. “Expertly designed for heavy domestic/commercial use, this premium range of wool rich carpets features 64 vibrant plain colours and seven contemporary coordinating stripes. It will make its debut at The Flooring Show.” With consumers looking for comfort and luxury within their long term investment, Brockway is seeing an increase in demand for ranges such as Akaroa, Florian and Orion, with significant sales growth for its Cadogan superior two-ply yarn range, says Mr Annable.

Brintons Bell Twist is a classy woven wilton suitable for extra heavy domestic use
Brintons states it appreciates that during an economic downturn consumers are tempted to reduce the quality of what they are buying, so feel it is even more important to demonstrate the benefit in investing in a wool-rich, woven carpet. There is no doubt this will retain its looks for longer and buying cheaper alternatives is a false economy that will require carpet to be replaced sooner, the company advises. Brintons offers a sample and technical advice service directly to consumers, encouraging them to buy the best their budget will allow. Retailers also understand the importance of quality, it says, and play an important role in the purchase decision, offering invaluable advice and recommending the best carpets. When it comes to an infrequent purchase such as carpet, it is vital that the consumer understands that it pays dividends to spend more for higher quality carpets, Brintons concludes.
QA Products states that it is taking an innovative approach to the world of underlay by streamlining its extensive range into two brands, engineered to meet the challenges facing the carpet retailer. These are: how to include underlay with every carpet sale; and how to make a healthy profit. While the company offers its QA Essentials brands for budgetconscious customers, with Designer PU underlay the leading product, the company has developed its QA Performax range for the higher end of the market. Performax includes high performance underlays for luxury installations, tailored for customers with demanding requirements prepared to pay more for their flooring. There is considerable potential for the retailer to boost profits, the company states, through products such as its Mayfair luxury PU carpet underlay.
Bronte Carpets says although it has felt the effects of the economic downturn, producing at the higher end of the quality scale has protected it from feeling the full weight of the recession. It has found that the heavier qualities in its range have held up well.
Steve Byrne, Whitestone Weavers and Hugh Mackay managing director, says: “I can confirm that the top end of the market has definitely held its own. We are continuing to see healthy growth in the 60oz sales of Durham Twist. It far out performs the 40oz and 50oz.”
It is possible that the increase in wool prices may have contributed to this, as consumers look to a higher end product if they require wool carpet. It may also be that consumers are looking for a product that will last longer and are therefore spending a little more on a better quality carpet. Bronte states its latest additions possibly reflect this trend, as they are the two chunky shag pile qualities and the new embossed designs in its border range.
With the better retailers understanding the benefits of selling higher quality carpet, he states his company has positioned itself to supply those looking for superior products at a more cost-effective price. Its 95oz per sq yd Hassle Free Saxony is the company’s latest example. “Again it’s much more for your money that seems to work best,” says Mr Byrne.
Martin West, Kingsmead general manager, says: “I have been involved with selling heavy weight saxony carpets for nearly 25 years and have seen many peaks and troughs in their popularity.” Strong colours such as greys, pinks and jade greens dominated in the 1990s in nylon and polyester, before beige began its dominance 10 years ago. Since then the cost of nylon and polyester has increased significantly, leaving a void to be filled by the modern day two-ply BCF polypropylene. “The market is overrun currently with ‘salt'n'pepper’ deep saxonies with more arriving on a regular basis. At Harrogate, however, Kingsmead will launch its first 100oz saxony in 11 plain shades of Everlon polypropylene 4m and 5m wide,” says Mr West.
He believes the industry should move away from focusing on cost and start promoting the benefits of good quality carpeting. While his company supplies a blend of options to meet market demand, Mr Byrne firmly believes it is best to create fine products by using the best types of materials to create outstanding products to meet customers’ expectations of quality products. continued overleaf... Hugh Mackay’s 60oz Durham Twist out-sells the 40 and 50oz options
Clare Jenkinson, Ulster Carpet residential designer, says: “Customers who can afford top end products are sometimes less affected by the downturn and are less likely to compromise with a lower quality product. There has also been a move away from seeing houses as investments to be sold on regularly, and a reinforcement of the idea of 'home' as people move house less and appreciate the importance of home in unsettled times. In design terms there has been a move towards luxurious texture in all areas of home furnishings.” The company states its products are renowned for their quality and timeless appeal, with its Country House Collection and Ulster Velvet ranges depicting flooring at its finest, presented in sophisticated and elegant colour palettes.

Flower on Flooring continued from previous page Cormar’s new and superb Sensation
Cormar Carpets’ Sensation is made from 100% Luxelle PP, a heavyweight polypropylene that has been engineered to feel softer and more luxurious but with the qualities of a standard polypropylene, including a 10 year stain warranty. Made on 1/8th gauge using a two-fold specialised fine yarn to create a lustrous handle, Sensation is available in 10 contemporary plain neutrals including Monterey Sand and Siberian Mink. It comes in four and five metre widths and will retail around £25 per sq m. David Cormack, Cormar Carpets marketing director, says: “Since the price of wool has escalated, better quality polypropylenes like our Primo Ultra and Primo Delight have done exceptionally well. “Sensation was developed to be a much softer, more tactile carpet collection reflecting the current trend for lustre and handle. It is a heavy weight carpet to give it that deep pile, hardwearing quality. It is a range that sits within our Easy Clean range as a flag ship product.” All Cormar’s wool twist, wool loop and easy clean polypropylene ranges are produced on site at its Lancashire mills and distributed in the UK and Eire via its own delivery fleet.

Hot and cold comfort Itec is pioneering the use of cold welding for its entire range of commercial-rated resilient flooring with the Itec Invisiweld system. Negating the need for power tools and easier to carry out than conventional hot welding, Invisiweld leaves an almost imperceptible join making for a finish that is clean and retains the original aesthetic of wood, tile, stone and cement style decors. The Invisiweld system utilises a chemical bond to achieve its almost invisible join and it is not only easier, but also quicker and more cost-effective than traditional seaming methods. With Itec’s Invisiweld Pro Starter Kit containing everything installers need to begin adopting the method, Invisiweld looks set to transform resilient flooring: “Cold welding is already widely used in continental Europe and we are keen to bring all its benefits to the UK,” comments Jason Barrett, National Sales Manager, Itec Contract Floors. “We feel the method will very often supersede hot welding as it requires less equipment, is faster, less expensive, more forgiving to slight errors and provides a far better aesthetic.” Included within the Invisiweld Pro Starter Kit are Type A (close cut and tightly butted welds) and Type C (0.3 – 4mm gaps) tubes, a contract quality knife, blades, rollers and tape; Itec Contract Floors also supplies Invisiweld Type A and Type C tubes separately. The same tubes can be used regardless of colourway or décor, making Invisiweld suitable for use on absolutely any design combination and easy to take from project to project. “Invisiweld also removes the problem of a hot works licence, making it a preferred choice in many refurbishment projects and in operational buildings, as well as on certain new build works,” continues Jason. “While all Itec floors can be either hot or cold-welded we view the Invisiweld concept as the way to work smarter and faster and its introduction marks the future of resilient floor installation in the UK.” T 08000 323 970

The British Wool column Countess of Wessex opens British Wool offices
Visiting Bradford for a tour of the wool industry, the Countess of Wessex was invited for a tour of Wool House and the industry. The impressive new building is now situated nearer the centre of Bradford – historic home of the textile industry - and has amalgamated the wool grading side of the business with the administration. Welcomed by the BWMB’s chairman – a Northumberland sheep farmer - the Countess was given a tour of the early stage of the wool industry where British Wool is still graded by hand and eye. The grading depot, which serves the North of England area grades up to 5 million kilos of wool every year – the majority of this is strong wool that will be used in the manufacture of carpets. This was followed by a look at the way wool is auctioned – the BWMB will sell wool every fortnight throughout the year and it is all done via an electronic computerised system - although the wool merchants still attend personally as has been the long standing tradition in the wool industry. There was then a presentation on the Campaign for Wool which has been a key focus for the wider wool industry in the last three years and which now hosts many international promotions as well as a Wool Week in the UK. Members of the British Wool staff also met her and she received a posy from an employee’s daughter before unveiling a plaque.
Countess of Wessex at the opening
“It was a tremendous day for all concerned and a great boost to raising the valuable role that wool plays not just in the local community but across the world.” The Countess then went on to see wool scouring and carpet manufacturing to give her a fuller picture of the wool industry.
Gold medals and red carpets Olympic fever, literally took over our country and there is something magnificent about the way that we rallied around our nation’s big event and gave it our wholehearted support. The carpet industry hosts an award ceremony of its own – set up and run by the Carpet Foundation – it celebrates the promotion of carpet in the consumer press. It is a brilliant concept to make the monthly glossies feel appreciated for the work they do and the space they give to making carpet look good – which of course helps the retailer. Magazines like Period Living, which has a superb splash on carpet in their September issue – has done an excellent job for all of us in the industry. It is also interesting that colour is big on the pages of these publications. Less beige and more brave shades are creeping in to the style trends Maybe we need a gold medal for selling more carpet colour – it has got to be a great incentive – if it works for our young athletes – surely we can introduce it! Wool which takes dye very well and in all shades looks beautiful in rich colours. As the season changes – let’s give our wool carpet industry a boost by picking up the trends that these magazines push and turning them in to a boost for business.
Ulster Velvet in Imperial Red
Wool Week is back The UK’s biggest celebration of wool is just around the corner as October will see the return of Wool Week and from 15th to 21st – the country will be promoting wool in all variety of ways. The new and quite stunning sheep POS funded by the Campaign is designed to give stronger profile for wool in store and so is a perfect way to get involved in a very easy way. “There is no restriction on what you can do – it can be just about promoting carpet or it can be something totally fun and just a social occasion,” said Bridgette Kelly of the Campaign.

Survey
The underlay opportunity Call for national campaign to promote sales When footfall falls off and a real buyer is a rare and precious commodity, adding underlay sales to a carpet purchase can make a valuable difference to the bottom line but retailers may be missing the opportunity, says our survey. Our latest flooring forum generated some conflicting responses with 73% of retailers saying that customers could be persuaded to add underlay to their purchase – a quarter said it was ‘easy’ to persuade them. But half of our respondents admitted that more than 80% of their carpet sales went without underlay and an additional third said more than 60% of their sales fell in this category. Surprisingly, perhaps, 45% did not regard underlay as a ‘key opportunity to grow the business’. We had some interesting comments from retailers in our survey ‘soapbox’ this month. “Underlay is one area where we can put one over on Carpetright because they inflate the price. We can offer our customers a superior product at a lower price than they charge for a basic underlay,” said a North East store manager. A retailer from South Yorkshire added: “It’s a good earner. Generally for every 10 rolls you'll make an extra one! But it makes me mad when you lose a job because your competitor is using crap £2m2 underlay.” “Too many retailers undervalue underlay by offering free poor quality underlay or using non branded underlays,” said a respondent from Yorkshire. Overall, underlay sales were broadly flat compared to five years ago said our survey and respondents said the recession had made little difference to the motivation of consumers to buy. A London retailer suggested a campaign to increase the profile: “Let’s start a national sales drive paid for by all interested parties to sell more new underlay, maybe use the Carpet Foundation.” Suppliers generally got a thumbs-up from retailers with more than 80% saying they were charging a fair price and 78% were happy with the service and sampling they received. But manufacturers selling to internet was a loud and common complaint. An Essex retailer, for example, commented: “I supply and lay a roll of quality branded underlay for around £120.00. If my customer checks on line they can get it for £40. I find that difficult to mitigate but it is a grim reminder that the carpet trade cannot continue trading in its current fashion.” The recent explosion of products offered in the market as suppliers chase niche sales and introduce entry-level ranges has been less well received by the market with 63% of retailers
66% say most of their carpet sells without underlay 45% don’t see underlay as a key opportunity 80% say manufacturers charge a fair price 68% sell just 3 or 4 types of underlay 66% of retailers prefer PU, 89% of fitters prefer PU 63% say there are too many product options The Stocklists polled 1047 retailers throughout the UK during August 2012 . Replies and comments are recorded anonymously. Many thanks to all those who took part.
believing there were now too many options available. Most of our retailers – some 68% - offer just three or four options and only 18% offered 6 or more products. PU confirmed its popularity among our sample with 66% of retailers saying it was the preferred choice of their customers and 89% the preferred choice of their fitters. 54% of our survey said they used in-store product demos and sampling to discuss underlay choice with consumers. But retailers have to take the initiative with one Bristol business commenting he’d only been asked twice in 8 years about underlay. A Hampshire retailer called for a national standard: “I'd like to see an industry standard ratings system on underlay. Most consumers seem to think thicker is better, we all know that's not the case. Some of us will try and educate the customer while others are quite happy to sell a dodgy 12mm for a 600% mark up!” Asked how long underlay should last, the vast majority of our panel said 10 years with only 7% suggesting longer. A common answer was that underlay should last as long as the carpet – no more, no less.
It’s a good earner - for every 10 rolls you'll make Let’s start a national sales an extra one!
It’s relatively easy to upgrade almost drive to sell more underlay every job Underlay is one area Too many retailers where we can put one undervalue underlay over on Carpetright 72 September 2012
