Multi-Level Loop

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

THE STOCKLISTS September 2014

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 5

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

www.flooringone.co.uk Contact: Glenn Harding Tel: 0121 683 1426 glenn.harding@flooringone.co.uk

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 8

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 10

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS September 2014

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 17

UK stockholding – huge service enhancement After a successful trial this summer, Edel Telenzo have now moved all stock to the UK. With this, delivery times are amongst the most competitive.

Per September 1st, Alliance (Kidderminster) are responsible for all aspects of stocking, cutting and logistics, for all ranges. Moving stock from the head office in the Netherlands to the UK is an important, strategic step, underlining the market’s importance to the company and allowing the company to be as competitive as anyone in the UK market place with regards to delivery. From September, Edel Telenzo will be able to deliver 2 days a week to all main conurbations; delivery to outlying regions will take between 3-5 days. Phil Hartley, CEO Edel Telenzo UK: “This is a very significant and positive strategic step for the company. It will allow us to be amongst the most competitive in terms of delivery in the UK, further enhancing the high service level that we already provide.”

It’s a Goal!

Europe’s largest carpet manufacturer is hitting hard with Goal from the Big Hit collection. A gorgeous chunky loop texture and five on-trend natural shades combine with better value for money and service levels, backed by one of the biggest names in the business, for a carpet that’s a real contender.

Dialling into the trend for rustic interior looks, Goal achieves the appearance of natural carpet with all the ease of living of Balta Broadloom’s StainSafe yarn, the perfect blend of style, quality and great value. “Chunky loop pile carpets give a really charming character to the floor, with the deep texture bringing a distinct appearance in any room,” explains Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Broadloom. “With Goal we’ve brought this look in a carpet that makes the most of the performance of modern generation stain resistant fibres and Balta Broadloom’s legendary value and service levels, some would say that this is the ideal combination.” As part of the Big Hit collection, Goal is not presented on a traditional tombola or wall display, but in a large folder that gives the range huge impact and makes its mark thanks to its graphic style. With Big Hit fully backed by Balta Broadloom’s renowned service levels, the collection promises to be a strong selection for retailers: “We are really confident that Big Hit provides a neatly packaged collection of textured and patterned carpet so felt that its point of sale could reflect this, remaining impressively flexible, portable and easy for retailers to pick up and sell from. It provides a really good talking point that allows people to get really close to the carpets and is sure to leave a great impression,” continues Geert. Available in a four-metre width and backed by a 10-year StainSafe warranty as well as a seven-year wear warranty, Goal features Balta Broadloom’s Texflor secondary felt backing for improved underfoot cushion and insulation, helping to create a quieter, warmer and more comfortable home. Give it what four

The low maintenance, comfort and durability of commercial sheet vinyl makes it a natural choice for a huge range of environments, but with a common width of two-metres, its use in large open plan spaces has been restricted by too many unsightly joints. However, with Itec Contract Floors’ four-metre wide option, there is now a way to reduce the number of seams and minimise their appearance in large spaces.

Whether decorative sheet, acoustic or safety flooring, all Itec floors are available in super-wide four-metre, meaning less ugly seams and a more realistic look for multidirectional and natural designs. Along with Invisiweld technology that makes the join between sheets virtually impossible to spot, this super-wide option brings improved aesthetics to commercial vinyl flooring. There are practical advantages too, as a reduction in the number of seams means minimising potential weak spots in the floor. “We are currently the only vinyl manufacturer to provide our portfolio in a four-metre wide option,” explains David Bigland, sales director, Itec Contract Floors. “Specifiers and designers can now confidently recommend the use of our vinyl floorcoverings in large open plan spaces knowing that they will look great and provide a durable floor finish while retaining sheet vinyl’s reputation for great value.” Available from leading distributors across the UK, Itec Contract Floors can provide tailored solutions in a range of environments, whether healthcare, education, corporate or public spaces. With natural designs and surface textures that are incredibly realistic along with contemporary decors that explore the scope of vinyl flooring as a modern design material, Itec Contract Floors can meet the requirements of most design briefs. Along with Hyperguard+ to facilitate easier maintenance and better resistance to scuffs and stains, Itec Contract Floors are designed to withstand use in the busiest of commercial environments. Palacial Packexe

Packexe has long been used in the renovating and decorating markets in homes and offices, but it’s not just for floors and windows recently it was used on a rather grander scale – at Exeter Cathedral. The Cathedral’s ‘West Wing of the Bishops Palace’ project cost £1.8m to bring together all the treasures of the Cathedral’s Library and Archives under one roof for the first time and to improve the facilities for the cathedral choirs and clergy.

Top marks at school

Forbo’s Back to the Floor take back scheme can collect waste flooring off-cuts from a wide range of refurbishment projects, including schools and hospitals, offering a convenient and cost-saving service for contractors.

The scheme can either collect directly from these types of projects or, if preferred, the contractor can take the material back to their premises to await collection. Marmoleum can also be dropped off free at Headlam Scotland and J De Bruyn depots. Back to the Floor Scheme Co-ordinator, Michelle Brewer said: “During the school summer holidays, it can be a busy time for contractors working on flooring refurbishment projects when educational buildings are empty. “We’re expecting our collections of Forbo installation off-cuts from school, university or college sites will prove popular with flooring companies, saving them time and money while also enabling them to prove their green credentials by recycling responsibly.” Marmoleum off-cuts from a current installation at New South Glasgow Hospital are being collected and sent for recycling into new Marmoleum flooring at Forbo’s plant in Kirkcaldy. The amount of Marmoleum collected for recycling in the first six months of 2014 has more than doubled since last year. A new lower collection threshold of just one bulk bag provides greater flexibility on collections of Forbo’s flooring off-cuts, especially for participants working on smaller projects. Around 70m² of Forbo flooring off-cuts is enough to fill each bag. This is equivalent to the fitting waste from a 700m² installation project. Each bag costs £15 when collected directly from site or £7.50 if collected from the flooring contractor’s premises. It’s a considerable cost-saving compared to sending the material to landfill. The original plan was to move the library contents to protect them from dust from building works, but Packexe stepped in with an offer to use their protection films to avoid the need to move the priceless works. Packexe’s trusted film solutions meant that the project continued whilst the books remained in place, completely protected from dirt and dust. Commenting on Packexe’s support of the Library works, Canon Librarian Ann Barwood, who managed this project said: “Many of these books are priceless. Some are treasures of national and international significance such as the 10th Century Exeter Book of Anglo Saxon Poetry and the Exon Domesday Survey of 1086. Moving them presented significant challenges in both risk of damage and cost. We were delighted to be able to leave them undisturbed which not only kept them safe but saved tens of thousands of pounds which we were able to invest back into the project”. Packexe were able to supply an easy and cost effective solution. Using their hard floor and carpet protection films as appropriate, Packexe was able to mask over doors, flooring and fixed furniture to create a safe and effective barrier for the library against dust and other foreign matter. The Library books did not need to be moved and the original architectural features were left undisturbed. This meant that once the project was completed, all that was left to be done was to peel away the Packexe films and dispose of them, with very little cleaning required. Focus on the floor

Market leading products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used in the refurbishment of the CooperVision contact lens manufacturing warehouse in Southampton. High performance Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane was used to cover the 2000m2 factory floor. Contractors from KC Carpets and Flooring then primed the area with Stopgap P131 and applied Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayment to prepare the subfloor to receive a new vinyl floorcovering.

Four days were allotted to complete the flooring installation to lay vinyl flooring over the original concrete subfloor, in order to make better use of the warehouse space - meaning that KC Carpets and Flooring had to work to tight deadlines. Moisture measurement tests detected the presence of moisture within the subfloor, necessitating the use of a waterproof surface membrane to protect the lifespan of the new flooring installation. Stopgap F77, F. Ball's ultimate single-coat epoxy resin moisture protection system, which is effective up to relative humidity levels as high as 98%, was applied to the concrete subfloor, creating a barrier against moisture. Pigmented metallic black to aid coverage uniformity, Stopgap F77 has a working time of 30 minutes and cured at the CooperVision site in approximately three hours. Stopgap P131 general purpose primer was used over the waterproof surface membrane to prepare the area before application of Stopgap 1200 Pro, the minimum preparation, maximum performance smoothing underlayment. Chosen for its time-saving qualities, Stopgap 1200 Pro has a working time of 20 minutes, a walk-on time of 60 minutes, and was ready to receive new floorcoverings at the CooperVision site after four hours. Gary Collins, Director of KC Carpets and Flooring, said: “One of the reasons that I use F. Ball products so regularly is the support that the company offers. They give great backup, particularly when it comes to moisture testing, which makes it much easier for us to do the work quickly and efficiently.” T 01538 361 633 36 September 2014

Alive with textural detail and featuring in the impressive Louis de Poortere suitcase,Willow stands out from the crowd. Mimicking the over and under style of handcrafted willow baskets from which it draws inspiration, this woven wilton gives a stunning silken take on loop pile carpet, undoubtedly appealing to those with a keen eye for detail and individuality. Once, manmade fibres could only achieve the silk-like look of Willow, but thanks to innovation in yarns Louis de Poortere has achieved the same effect in wool and mercerised cotton for a natural carpet that is also eminently affordable. Mercerised cotton has a high lustre, strength and affinity to dye and gives Willow a sheen and softness, while remaining durable and easy to maintain. Combined with pure new wool, the result is beautifully soft, inviting and with unmistakable quality. Willow is available in three colours that take subtle inspiration from the popularity of grey and respect the pureness of its natural fibre construction. “We are exceptionally proud of Willow,” explains Alan Russell, sales manager, Louis de Poortere. “We believe it captures the essence and detail of well-designed carpet. A striking weave-like texture, innovative fibre mix and gorgeous subtle on-trend shades make this a truly beautiful carpet. It is also readily accessible, sensibly priced and comes in a practical four-metre width.” Just one of 15 beautiful broadloom carpets found within the Louis de Poortere suitcase, including the famed velour of Richelieu and 100% biodegradable Eco Dream Duluxe, Willow demonstrates the capability and Louis de Poortere’s attention to detail. Flanders floral tribute

IVC Group is honoured to be supporting the Flanders Field 1914-2014 Memorial Garden, part of the events marking the Centenary of World War One.

Designed by internationally acclaimed Belgian landscape architect Piet Blanckaert, the Flanders Field Memorial Garden, has been carefully considered so that it will become a special memorial to all those who fought on the battlefields of Flanders. The garden is located at Wellington Barracks alongside the Guards Chapel, adjacent to Buckingham Palace, and is to thank the British people for their sacrifice in liberating Belgium. A ceremonial handover of 70 bags of soil taken from the battlefields took place on 30th November 2013, where it was laid into the circular bed of the newly constructed garden. The ceremony involved Belgian and English dignitaries, soldiers of the Household Division and schoolchildren from both countries. Due to open on Thursday 6th November 2014 during a very special ceremony that will be attended by members of both countries’ Royal Families, the garden will provide a place of contemplation and remembrance for all those that visit. “We are both honoured and delighted to be supporting this poignant and beautiful garden,” says Francis Debrabandere, commercial director, IVC Group. “It is thanks to our status as a leading Belgian manufacturer that we are able to contribute to a very worthwhile project that will continue to serve as a mark of respect to all the British soldiers that gallantly and bravely took part in World War One and the liberation of Belgium.” The Flemish Government, the House of Lords, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the British Army, the City of Westminster, English Heritage and the Belgian-Luxemborg Chamber of Commerce support the memorial garden. Recofloor members celebrated their considerable vinyl flooring recycling achievements at the scheme’s third annual 2014 Awards event. Flooring companies, contractors and distributors, who have collected nearly 1,700 tonnes of vinyl flooring since the UK take-back scheme’s inception in 2009, received their trophies and certificates from guest host and BBC Sport’s football pundit Mark Lawrenson. Held at Aston Villa Football Club in Birmingham, the event rewards members' commitment and is highly valued by the flooring supply chain. 2014 saw competition more intense than ever before! Recofloor is the UK’s award-winning national vinyl flooring recycling scheme, founded by leading flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor, to divert vinyl flooring waste from landfill. Material is collected, irrespective of who manufactured it, which benefits the environment and significantly reduces collectors’ waste disposal costs. Smooth and safety flooring off-cuts are recycled back into new products, such as flooring, with smooth uplifted flooring being recycled back into traffic calming products such as cones and sign bases. Both directors, John Patsavellas of Altro and John Whitesmith of Polyflor, praised the continued efforts of the scheme’s 525-plus collectors, saying: “The quality of the nominees was outstanding and testament to the success of the scheme. Everyone can be proud of what they have achieved.” Based mainly on last year’s achievements, the Recofloor Awards also recognise those collectors who have made significant contributions to the scheme in various ways. Hull Flooring took Construction Project of the Year for integrating Recofloor into its working practices at a number of retail projects. Distributor of the Year and a Gold Award went to Cardiff-based 3D Flooring Supplies for strongly promoting the scheme to local contractors and ensuring returned material meets the Recofloor specification. Progressive Floors of Camberley took the Drop-off Site User of the Year award for frequently using its local C&F drop-off point with material collected mainly from Health sector projects. Carpet & Flooring, Manchester scooped the Greatest Improver prize, which celebrates the biggest year-on-year increase weighted by the size of the company concerned. It also won a Gold Award. North West-based Lee Floorstok Ltd collected the Outstanding Achievement award which recognised their efforts in putting sustainable practices at the heart of their operations. Birch Distribution clinched the Long-Standing Service Award for its ‘vital support to both the industry and Recofloor’s outstanding success’.

Going for growth in Harrogate

The biggest Harrogate show for years is going for growth with presentations and activities that are designed to boost business for retailers and maximise the opportunity of an economic upturn. “We hope that the strong growth we have seen in support for this year’s show is a mark of better business confidence in the sector,” says organiser Paul Stott. “The objective of the event is to pass that effect on to retailers so that they can secure opportunities to grow their own businesses and increase profits. “We have three days of intense activities - seminars, demonstrations, exhibitor presentations and networking that are all focussed on making a real difference to your bottom line.” The organisers commitment to building a better, smarter show over the last three years have been rewarded in 2014 with the return of most of the big brands to Harrogate. Over 140 companies are exhibiting - most noticeably, nearly all the flagship carpet manufacturers are back at the event. The leading line up in carpet now includes: Abingdon, Adam, Axminster, Beaulieu, Brintons, Brockway, Bronte, Cavalier, Condor, Cormar, Crown, Edel Telenzo, F&X, Furlong, H&V, Kingsmead, Lano, Manx, Ulster, Victoria and Westex. See the full exhibitor list on page 46. The activities in the four halls of Harrogate are all completely free of charge to trade participants. Free parking at the venue’s underground car park is open to all visitors for all three days on a first come first served basis, and there will be free internet access throughout. HarrogateGuide 2014 Adam Carpets back with a bang

Adam Carpets are returning to the Flooring Show with a bang this year as they will be launching two new ranges and exciting new colours for their iconic Fine Worcester Twist range. These new colours are expected to be the talk of the show after it was announced earlier in the year that they would be shown for the first time at Harrogate. Expectation is high amongst retailers as they look forward to seeing what trends Adam Carpets will be developing. Two new ranges will also be previewed including ‘Close Companions’, a ‘fabric to floor’ design initiative. Two stunning patterns in ‘Houndstooth’ and ‘Herringbone’ will offer a real interior design feel to any room. ‘Revelation’ will also be on show, Adam Carpets latest trailblazer. This coordinating range of plains, heathers, stripes and tonals has already been hailed as a success. Find out why at the Adam Carpets stand. Hall C Stand 39 • T 01562 822247 www.adamcarpets.com

Curtis Wool multi talented fibre

Many customers asked Curtis why there was so little being done to promote wool. These customers came from all sectors of the wool industry and it was always difficult to give a proper answer. Since the International Wool Secretariat disintegrated there hasn’t been a single body responsible for promoting wool as a generic fibre. That has now changed and with the priceless support of His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, who created the Campaign for Wool (CfW) we are starting to see results. HRH galvanised wool interests in the major wool growing countries of the world. These include the United Kingdom, Australia, Norway, New Zealand, South Africa, the USA and the Shetland Islands among others. The aim was to raise the awareness of wool as a valuable raw material and a “multi talented fibre”. Many of us were brought up with a knowledge of wool that went into making a whole range of products, especially carpets and rugs. In modern times we saw the influx of cheap synthetics, wool became the forgotten fibre and its value dropped considerably. The CfW set about changing all that and it has done a brilliant job. Nevertheless, at a meeting held at Highgrove, HRH made it clear that he also expected us all to do our bit! So, the people at Curtis Wool Direct and Haworth Scouring have decided to do just that. They are simply going to show people why wool is such a great fibre and why it makes a better carpet. Curtis experts will not be discussing room sets or interior design but they probably know more about which wool makes the best carpets than anyone else in the world! HarrogateGuide 2014 Quick-Step Academy making a name

The Quick-Step Academy for Excellence in Flooring will be using the Flooring Show to lift the lid on a brand new identity, as it changes its name to the Academy for Excellence in Flooring Powered by Quick-Step and Pergo. The new look is more than just a change of name and logo, with major developments behind the scenes too as it looks to cater for the needs of professionals working in both the contract and retail sectors. From now on, courses for the contract sector will be under the guise of Pergo, while those for the domestic installations will run under the household Quick-Step brand. Under this structure the academy will provide tailored content for installers, with the ultimate goal of becoming either a Pergo Master Pro Installer with the specialist skills required for the contract market, or a QuickStep Master Installer best skilled to deliver outstanding quality in residential environments. With the Quick-Step Master Installer scheme remaining unchanged, The Pergo Master Pro Installer course focuses on training experienced installers with a minimum two-years’ experience who have good technical knowledge. The Academy will use this experience as a foundation, while sharpening the unique skills and knowledge required to carry out wood and laminate flooring installation in pressured commercial environments. Topics include product knowledge and site conditions, as well as interpretation of plans, evaluation of environmental restrictions, standards and legislations, custom installations and replacement of damaged panels. In short, everything an experienced flooring installer may encounter in a contract environment. Hall B Stand 44

CRUK recycling in circles

Latest information on how retailers can benefit from recycling carpets and carpet off-cuts will be a key focus in a Carpet Recycling UK seminar on Monday September 22 at the Harrogate Flooring Show.

Taking the theme of ‘Carpets – resources for the Circular Economy’, the seminar from 10.45 to 11.30am aims to build awareness of the opportunities for flooring suppliers to recycle carpet waste and how this sustainable approach can enhance their businesses. CRUK will provide an overview of the latest developments in carpet recycling, including the growth of Take Back programmes across the country. This will be followed by a presentation from Designer Contracts, a leading contractor and CRUK member, on their experience and success with recycling carpet off-cuts. CRUK Director Laurance Bird commented: “We have made terrific progress since 2008 in reusing and recycling all types of carpet; yet there is still much that can and has to be done. Having set a new target of diverting 60% carpet waste from landfill by 2020, it is vital that we engage with and encourage as many flooring suppliers as possible to come on board.” CRUK, the industry’s association for recycling and reusing carpet, will be exhibiting at stand M35 during the three-day show, and welcomes enquiries from all types of organisations interested in recycling waste carpet. Kenburn green gains

Are you still spending a fortune sending your waste carpet to landfill? Over the past seven years, landfill tax has risen by £8 per tonne per year. This continual rise has of course had a knock on effect with skip costs which have risen by a staggering 200% since 2007! In the majority of cases it now costs less to recycle new and post-consumer carpet than it does to send it to landfill. Kenburn has recently become a member of Carpet Recycling UK and will make their debut at the Harrogate Flooring Show in September promoting the financial and environmental benefits of recycling waste carpet. Kenburn also visit contactors and retailers of all sizes throughout the UK offering free impartial advice on how best to reduce a cost that only ever seems to go one way. Visit their stand M12 or alternatively contact them to arrange a free of charge waste survey to determine what savings you can make by “going green”. Stairrods UK chocks away! Stairrods UK will preview their new Easy Chocks and Easy Wedges at the Harrogate show this year. John Raine Director of Stairrods has yet again invented a simple yet effective product that overcomes problems when fitting Singles and DoubleZ that come across thicker underlays. At the moment there is an unavailability of raised base for thicker underlays (accept in aluminium and brass) for Singles and DoubleZ which is a problem…… Chocks and Wedges can raise the base by 3mm or double up to 6mm for those 11m underlays. All you need is a bucket of raised base! The Chocks and Wedges will be free when ordering our Premier Trims for a limited period only. Thereafter they will be available by the bucket for pennies. Ultimately eliminating the need to stock raised base profiles. “As our trims are solid brass you won’t require as many Wedges or Chocks as you would need for inferior aluminium products, they require double the quantity!” says John. The British Wool column Wool promotions at The Flooring Show! British Wool at the Hub of Education The benefits of wool and its remarkable performance attributes are at the centre of the British Wool Marketing Board’s activities within Wool Trends at The Flooring Show this year. The unique wool industry organisation, which is owned by approximately 50,000 UK sheep farmers, will introduce two new brochures - ‘WOOL: Sheep to Store’ and ‘WOOL: Store to Floor’ as part of their ongoing campaign to build better understanding of wool and its multiple assets in carpet and the home. Sheep to Store will look at wool on the sheep through early processing to manufacturing and in to different types of flooring product. In Store to Floor - wool and its many benefits will be highlighted with a useful focus on care and cleaning advice for consumers. The brochures will have a strong consumer style but the Sheep to Store brochure is a perfect tool for the retailer as it will look at the way wool is taken through different stages to create carpet. Both will be very user-friendly, offering a useful and informative snapshot rather than too much heavy detail. Tips and advice on how wool can be cared for and used to best advantage in the home will be really beneficial to the consumer too and a great tool for the retail store. “I hope retailers will call by our stand in Hall C and register for the brochures and new POS materials,” Tim Booth of the BWMB said.

ONEWOOL - launch of the world’s biggest wool gallery The website ONEWOOL.com - the exciting next stage of a nomination-led promotion that started last year, will see its trade launch at The Flooring Show, Harrogate. An inspirational on-line Gallery format, ONEWOOL - will display interior items made using wool including carpet, rugs, fabric, furnishings and art. Carpet from British Wool manufacturers in the UK and across the world will be displayed on individual brand pages that will link directly to their own websites making it easy for people to contact wool manufacturers. In celebration, wool carpet products from wool carpet manufacturers at The Flooring Show will be displayed on easels all over the event to highlight the wool industry’s major initiative to create a global store window for wool. “ONEWOOL is a very strong move forward for wool interiors promotions as it offers a one-stop shop for wool using a central platform. With easy registration through an account mechanism, partners can sign up, update and manage their gallery page themselves,” Bridgette Kelly of the Campaign for Wool said.

A wool welcome to you! Wool will welcome you to The Flooring Show this year - which is shaping up to be a truly fabulous event! A smart enclosure of Dalesbred and Roughfell sheep will be situated by the Harrogate based event’s front entrance on Sunday and Monday to clearly show how the wool grows! This special feature brought by British Wool Marketing Board and the National Sheep Association highlights the natural sustainability of home grown British wool as a perfect fibre for flooring. There are over sixty different pure breeds of British sheep in the UK - and the wool is largely classified as strong wool and perfect for carpets and rugs due to its inherent ability to withstand continuous footfall. British wool has always excelled in woven and tufted carpet - it is robust and resilient, strong enough to take the long manufacturing process and the wear and tear of family life. “Nothing really beats good quality real wool for carpet - great appearance retention lies in the quality of the wool used and as our sheep will show you - the wool grown in the UK is some of the best in the world!” Tim Booth of the BWMB said.

Homes & Gardens celebrates wool carpet British Wool and The Campaign for Wool are delighted that wool carpet will be promoted in a special supplement in the October issue of Homes & Gardens magazine on sale in September. Free to every visitor at The Flooring Show! Also we are thrilled to welcome Giles Kime - Editor-in-Chief - to our Wool Seminar programme on Monday. Come along and learn about the latest Wool Trends from the style bible itself!

Feature: Furlong Flooring

Furlong moves ahead New capacity makes more room for growth Furlong’s move into major new warehousing near the M5 this month puts down a new marker to those who have watched the company’s relentless rise to prominence in the flooring trade. The extra capacity at Stonehouse near Stroud adds more than a third to Furlong’s existing storage capacity and gives an indicator of their ambitions for growth. Combined with the increasing investment in sophisticated technology, this also shows how serious they are about service. Advanced computer systems are also being rolled out across the Furlong network, developing a real-time ‘knowledge base’ for the business to plan sales and service more accurately. Online ordering will be available for retailers who want it and delivery tracking will be introduced soon.

The Stonehouse distribution centre adds 165,000 sq ft of capacity for 19,000 rolls of carpet to the existing depots at Preston and Dartford – increasing overall capacity by about a third.

It is clear that the business has graduated from its emergent status of maybe 10 years or so ago to elite ranking towards the top of the leading players in today’s flooring industry. Hard evidence of this progress towards premier position comes from the recent award of Best UK Flooring Manufacturer by Interiors Monthly to the Furlong Group.

Winning ways

“We are pushing forward on all fronts and have been steadily climbing the ladder,” says group managing director Malcolm Gibson. “Now we are competing at the top of the table and winning.” “All fronts” has been evident across the business. Not only has Furlong been meticulous in covering all the price points across the carpet range, including a move into more 5m widths and upper-mid range polypropylenes, it has just stepped up its non-textile offer. Earlier this year, the quality hardwood range under the Natural Solutions brand was extended from the South into a national offering and a whole new business in smooths, the Design Elements cushionfloor collection, is being launched this month. All this needs space to hold sufficient stock for a fast delivery service. But carpet remains king at the company under their Regency brand and Furlong’s 22 tufting machines in Northern Ireland make it a leading UK manufacturer. An additional two new tufting machines will be installed early in 2015 to provide additional manufacturing capacity. continued overleaf ...

September 2014 55

Feature: Furlong continued from the previous page... “Our business is about getting the balance right between flexible, efficient manufacturing resources and well-organised stockholding and distribution,” says Malcolm. Sales director Neil Valentine added: “It helps to be selling products that people really like and that retailers can sell and our strategy has never changed – we aim to tick all the boxes so that everyone gets what they want, when they want it.”

Furlong Flooring have gone full ahead to tick all the boxes across the widest range of product ranges, adding cushionfloor and a national wood offer to their established strength in carpets.

“As a result, we have a sales team that is genuinely excited about what we’re doing and fired up in a way you don’t see too much elsewhere in the industry - and right across the business, our people have a real passion about what we’re doing,” he says. But competitors will not take comfort from Malcolm’s final comments: “We don’t expect to fill the new warehouse right away even though we have seen excellent growth in market share and are surfing along the top of the wave right now. To launch the next ten ranges we need capacity. So we’re planning to be busy. You ain’t seen nothing yet!” T 01772 696787 www.furlongflooring.co.uk

Feature: Brockway

Let’s twist and shout, it’s Brockway’s 50th It was the year when Beatlemania went into overdrive, the average house price was £3,360 and The Carpetbaggers was one of the biggest movies.

Many say 1964 was greatest time of the last century for music, and equally it was when Brockway’s golden story began as the company celebrates its 50th anniversary this month.

Brockway - the early days of Harrogate

Fifty years ago, Roy Annable and Skene Walley took over A G Brockway, a small Axminster and Wilton carpet manufacturer in Kidderminster which had been going since the 1930s. They were exciting and challenging times for the innovative duo, who established the foundations of Brockway’s success. Defining moments were many, the first came in 1975 with the purchase of a tufting machine in what proved to be a rapidly expanding market. Then they bought a finishing line, and introduced a 5m facility. It was another enterprising move, as the only manufacturer capable of producing a 5m product for a major retailer. The milestones continued in 1990, with the major acquisition of a sales, warehouse and distribution unit on Spennells Valley Road, on the other side of the viaduct from its Hoobrook factory. What followed was a major industry first. Brockway pioneered an innovative, environmentally beneficial carpet-backing technique called Envirobac. It’s a lighter weight backing with numerous advantages, being very flexible, super-strong and stable. The way it’s made is energy-efficient, effluent and emission-free and it can be recycled at the end of its useful life. Indeed, innovation, quality, integrity and customer service are all core values which remain right at the heart of Brockway’s business ethos today. The progressive, family run business is now headed up by managing director Charles Annable – Roy’s son who joined the business in 1994. His vision has helped the firm evolve from the production of traditional woven carpets to high quality cutting-edge contemporary floor coverings for domestic and commercial markets. He said: “We believe strongly in British craftsmanship and are proud to manufacture beautiful, high quality products in our own factory in the traditional market town of Kidderminster.

anniversary “We actively support the work of traditional sheep farmers and our Lakeland Herdwick range of contemporary carpets has not only contributed to the survival of a rare and protected British breed, but has also helped Herdwick farmers in a candidate World Heritage site to achieve a more sustainable future.” Equally, Brockway uses Laneve wool from Wools of New Zealand – which is fully traceable back to identifiable farmers who meet environmental, social responsibility and animal welfare standards. Known for its innovation, Brockway has introduced its custom colour matching service to specific ranges. Charles added: “This is a major development for Brockway. We are able to match to virtually any colour reference provided by the customer for minimum orders of just 25 sq m. This means we can cater for most rooms, whether it’s a living room or whole house.

Brockway at Harrogate 1978

“We are positioning ourselves as the UK’s premier manufacturer of high quality wool-rich carpets, and this comes through in the quality of fine materials we use and in our custom colour offer. “We’ve built up a great wealth of expertise in the development of innovative tufted carpet and our highly skilled local workforce gives us a huge advantage over some of our overseas competitors. “All our staff take an immense pride in the role they play in creating a Brockway carpet, which is hand finished once it leaves the machine.” Brockway continues to expand its portfolio of high quality tufted and loop carpet, working with the best yarn suppliers and leading designers to develop exciting new products, principally in the 100 per cent wool and wool-rich arena. Charles continued: “Our award-winning wool-rich carpets offer great value for money and we pride ourselves on catering for everyone – whatever their budget or taste.

“Consumers buying a Brockway carpet can rest assured that it’s been made with the finest raw materials and with great care and attention by skilled craftsmen and women in the company’s Kidderminster factory.”

“We believe strongly in British craftsmanship and are proud to manufacture beautiful, high quality products in the traditional market town of Kidderminster”

Today, the company employs around 100 people, and over 60 per cent of the staff have been with the firm for more than 20 years. Embedded in the workforce is the experience of generations of carpet makers, many of whom are sons and daughters of previous staff whose knowledge and skills have passed down through the years.

“Like any responsible business, sustainability is vitally important to us and we’re lucky to work with wool, one of the world’s most sustainable resources.

As well as designing and manufacturing 20 different ranges, Brockway’s carpets come in hundreds of different colour choices across plain, heather and berber flecked styles.

“We’re committed to reducing our overall environmental impact and we continuously assess our manufacturing techniques to ensure we’re working not only smarter, but greener.

Today, Brockway carpets are sold throughout the UK and overseas, through an extensive network of major international retailers and the best independents.

Major developments for Brockway include the launch of environmentallyfriendly, fully traceable 100 per cent wool carpets, and a custom colour match service.

Feature: Balta

50 years of building Balta

Balta’s Sint-Baafs-Vijve production site is one of 10 across the world

Balta turns 50 this year and as the largest carpet manufacturer in Europe celebrates this milestone, it takes a look back at its history, chronicling how it has grown from a small family-owned carpet producer into one of the leading brands in Europe. Balta NV was Founded on 29th April 1964 and started with just five employees as Paul Balcaen looked to the new possibilities of the textile market after the family flax business suffered in the collapse of the sector. However, its history dates back to 1959 when, with his training as a textile engineer, Paul Balcaen realised that the future was in a higher-value textile product, specifically area rugs aimed at professionals such as doctors and lawyers, rather than the family’s initial venture into flatweave textiles. Buying three second-hand looms, Paul used his expertise to focus on the weaving face-toface woven carpets and took the decision to form the public limited company Balta NV with the vision to move to ‘home’ weavers and piece workers, because of a lack of sufficient capital to provide a fully-fledged response to rapidly growing market demand. Balta provided the raw materials and assignment and the ‘home’ weaver with the investment in its own loom, was paid for every square metre produced. By 1971, Balta was already employing eight home weavers, with the peak reaching 25 in the 1980s. Thanks to making use of these home weaver partners, Balta was able to achieve rapid growth without the need to invest in larger machinery and permanent staff to completely keep up with demand. It could count on highly motivated and highly experienced home weavers to achieve added value. Through the use of external production capacity, Balta was better able to plan for the peaks and troughs of the market, simply continuing in-house production in the background. Without utilising home weavers in this way, Balta would simply not have been able to achieve such growth in the early years. With the introduction of a new generation of modern looms in the late 1980s, it was no longer cost effective to work with a small number of looms, so like any successful company, Balta adapted its model and in 1988 it set about creating and expanding Balta Weaving. 64 September 2014

CEO Hendrik Deruyck is a formidable force in the flooring industry, having established IVC and returning to re-focus Balta’s strategy at the end of 2012

Production capacity has expanded greatly since the company’s found ation in 1964

Balta introduced polypropylene extrusion in 1980 and has become a world leader in PP carpets

With 24 electronic looms at is disposal at a much-increased 30hectare site – the largest in the world - yield was dramatically increased and with it the phasing out of the home weaver and piece working model that had led to the company’s success was realised. However, this was only made possible as Balta had been strategically investing in production, creating a tufting division (ITC) in 1973, a latex backing plant in 1975 and a berber spinning mill in 1976. By 1985 Balta had 600 employees and a turnover of €100million. Yet through this impressive business growth, Paul Balcaen remained a technical innovator at heart and realised the shortcomings of pricecompetitive cotton and jute pile yarns, which quickly flattened and suffered from not being colourfast. So in 1973, Balta began the world’s first production of polypropylene yarns. Paul Balcaen first came into the properties of bulk continuous filament polypropylene some years earlier, though its producer, the Italian Neofil company, had not yet realised its potential in area rugs. Agreeing a 10-year exclusivity for the use of Merkalon, the trading name for the yarn, Balta began production. Selling these products under the Samira brand, Balta became the largest producer in the world and to this day, there is still no brand that has sold more polypropylene carpet than Samira.

Balta has returned to what it’s best at. Since 2013 the manufacturer has been solely involved in textile floorcoverings.

After the handover from Paul to his son Filip Balcaen in 1990, dominance continued with the first major event occurring in 1992, when the carpet division of Balta was divided into two parts. Cheaper polypropylene carpets were produced in two existing sites at Waregem and Sint-BaafsVijve, while a new factory was built in Avelgem for the production of wool and heatset carpets, with the later being the higher value end of the polypropylene carpet sector. Continuing the now well-established path of product innovation, in 1998, as it looked to capitalise on the popularity of sisal-look carpets, Balta developed a three-colour PP tone in a single thread, introducing a similar look without the manufacturing difficulties of sisal, selling these carpets under the Natura brand. Then in 2003, it produced the first carpets with a soft tufted loop pile and tufted cut pile. More recently, 2005 saw the development of heatset polypropylene yarns for shaggy rugs and long pile carpets and most recently, the Kelim innovation has been able to create the look of hand-knotted carpets using modern manufacturing and PP fibres. from The Stocklists

Tufting began in 1973

Completely integrated in all aspects of carpet production since 1969 and throughout all this technical innovation in textile flooring, Balta has gone through several business iterations with wallpaper, laminate flooring and vinyl flooring divisions all playing a hand in its growth. However, after this diversification, the sale of these divisions has released valuable capital gains and Balta has returned to what its best at. Since 2013 the manufacturer has been solely involved in textile floorcoverings. Surprisingly, for such a large manufacturer, the Balta name has never really been associated with consumer brands, with the company instead using brands such as StainSafe, Imprel and most recently Crown Floors to deliver its innovation to homes across Europe. Its strength has not been in brands, but in innovation and people, affectionately known as ‘Batezers’. Now in its 50th year, with a turnover of €600million, Balta has the venture capital fund Doughty Hanson as its majority shareholder and the Balcaen family remaining very much at its heart with a 20% stake. Under the watch of the highly experienced Hendrik Deruyck, Balta is truly a world force in carpet production. The group has 10 manufacturing plants worldwide, is a world-leader in machine woven rugs and broadloom carpets, is one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of tufted polyamide carpet, offers bespoke broadloom solutions for commercial environments and is quickly establishing the modulyss carpet tile brand as one of the most innovative in the sector. There is no doubt that Balta is a true great in the carpet sector and one of the industry’s biggest success stories. Here’s to another 50 years! New feel for fibre The diversity of the flooring sector is further emphasised by The Stocklists’ latest feature, which explores the increasing opportunities provided by non-wool carpet.

Bamboo Luxe from the Ultimo Collection by Lano Carpets

Balta marketing director Geert Vanden Bossche, says UK homeowners have always loved wool carpets, but a new generation of purchasers now realise that other carpet fibres can offer a serious alternative and are often easier to live with, while bringing a new aesthetic quality to their home. “Our Sensit carpets typify the style that these homeowners are looking for: soft to the touch, long-lasting and easy to look after with a feel of quality that is comparable to that of wool, but a look that is silken and indulgent,” says Geert. A feeling of value is the main aim of the range for those who appreciate quality and style, but do not want to pay excessively for this. With two-ply yarn and with 200% more filaments than other stain resist fibres, Sensit carpets are soft, inviting and durable, states Balta, while remaining competitively priced against wool-rich carpets.

director Tom Matthys says the Bamboo collection uses this rapidly renewable natural resource to give the carpet a silk-like quality and soft touch, while its inherent properties enhance the home.

Cormar Carpets marketing director David Cormack agrees that consumers increasingly look for hardwearing, well priced and lower maintenance carpets, resulting in polypropylene carpets becoming more popular due to their bleach cleanable, stain resistant properties.

“Bamboo is a natural humidity regulator, air filter and has natural anti-bacterial properties. With such great positive benefits, bamboo is winning favour among homeowners that want a fresh, modern and luxurious look to carpet, but who also still want to use natural products,” he says.

“One of the leading ranges in Cormar’s Easy Clean polypropylene collection is Sensation. It has been hugely successful due to its soft lustre and handle,” he says.

Bamboo is a prime example of natural materials that are impossible to replicate, he continues. “In the Bamboo collection, we¹ve combined the very best of bamboo with the qualities of polyamide and it is recyclable, easy to look after, resilient and comfortable underfoot.”

Made from a 100% Luxelle PP, it has been engineered to feel softer and more luxurious but with the practical qualities of polypropylene, including a 10 year stain warranty. “In light of its popularity, we have developed a Sensation family of ranges, including a lower weight version of Sensation called New Feeling, as well as a Sensation Heathers and Sensation Twist option,” says Mr Cormar. The company has also updated its Sensation Original and New Feeling ranges with six new shades including Atlantic Seal, Icing Sugar, Moccasin, Rydal Stone, Tuscan Clay and Ventura Opal. With the Eccelena yarn now featuring in the Fascination collection, a key launch for 2014, Lano Carpets has pioneered the use of bamboo in non-wool carpets. UK and Ireland sales Balta’s Sensit Twist

Mayfield Carpets tells Stocklists readers that its premium Alchemy Collection consists of seven distinctive ranges, carefully formulated to offer an extensive choice of styles and colours. These range from the company¹s 40oz Bronze, a versatile twist pile carpet, up to its sumptuous 100oz Mercury Saxony. Other ranges in the Mayfield collection include Titanium and Platinum, luxurious heavy weight saxonies available in 4m width, Pewter and Gold mid weight saxonies, which are available in 4m and 5m width. Further choice is offered by Silver, the company¹s attractive premium twist, which is available in widths of 4m and 5m. All are manufactured to the highest standard using top quality easy maintenance polypropylene yarns, and are a stylish addition to any home, offering an affordable touch of luxury, the company states. Kingsmead has developed a strong non-wool offering in recent years under its Clean Easy Branding. Three launches at The Flooring Show will display how far these have come, the company explains. Distinction is the first range in the new Wolltec Gen2 fibre, following on from the success of its original Wolltec three years ago. The fibre has been designed to look like wool but has a lifetime stain warranty. Grandeur is the first three ply polypropylene product in the company’s range and blends three mono colours together in a contrasting effect. Dignity recognises the move in the market towards soft fibres and is made using the new Everlon Super Soft fibre. Brilliant,Virtue and Inspiration make up the rest of Kingsmead¹s latest non-wool launches. continued overleaf...

Innovative expansion

Representing a £900,000 investment, Cormar Carpets has expanded its Ramsbottom-based Holme Mill site in a move to further improve stock availability and service to customers.

A small opening ceremony was held on the 11th July attended by Cormar’s Holme Mill staff and the construction team. A ribbon was cut by Mrs Cormack after which the first roll was loaded into a decker.

The new warehousing space which was commenced earlier this year, was opened by Cormar’s chairman Betty Cormack, increasing the storage area for un-backed carpet. The new warehouse features cutting edge construction technology with state-of-the-art electrics and fittings and gives 41,744 sq ft of new floor space with racking for up to 791 unbacked rolls (or 300,000 sq m of carpet). There is also the option to double stockholding capacity in the future. Said Paul Murphy, Cormar Carpet’s production manager: “The extension is another significant step in future proofing our operations, ensuring we continue to efficiently handle the high volume growth levels we’ve enjoyed in the last few years. It puts us in a better position to drive improvements in service to our customers.” All Cormar ranges are manufactured in the UK on site at its Lancashire mills and distributed throughout Britain and Ireland via its own delivery fleet. Furniture is star of summer retail sales

Furniture and flooring were described as having a ‘stellar’ performance on the high street this summer.

Latest reports from the British Retail Consortium said total retail spending was 1.3 percent higher in July compared with the same month a year ago as growth picked up from June's comparatively weak rate of 0.6 percent. The increase was driven by an upturn in furniture spending and other non-food purchases said the BRC. Furniture sales rose at the fastest pace since January, excluding distortions from the Easter holidays. Sales were up 3.4 per cent in the quarter to the end of July and in line with the average for the year of 3.8 per cent for the year. Spending on food declined again, marking its deepest three-month average fall since records started in December 2008. “Non-food retailers had a stellar month, surpassing even last year's record sales performance, but the grocers saw sales tumble in value as their competitive pricing continued," said David McCorquodale, head of retail at KPMG, which sponsors the survey.
