Show-offs

We admit it. We are showing off. We’re flaunting our enviable collection of carpet styles to their very best advantage and we want you to show them off too. Our star attraction is this magnificent wall display, designed to create the biggest impact your store has ever had. The system comprises eight linked wall panels, each comprising high-impact graphics sitting above attractive feeler swatches, topped by stylish integral lighting. Each unit measures 2.2m high by 76cm wide, adding up to a total width of 5.94m to create a comprehensive picture of the Associated Weavers offering. Because it’s modular, you can choose the precise number of panels you need (with a minimum of three), to make the most of your wall space. Then you can add to the effect with some beautifully constructed free-standing lectern and furniture display units. And if you want to make a bigger splash with your StainAway display, you could add some extra height with a branded totem.

A show-stopping display for your showroom

At Associated Weavers we have gone to great lengths to relaunch our best-selling ranges over the last few years. We’re always increasing and improving all our brands to give you the best in polyamide, polypropylene and wool yarn technology. This new merchandising programme gives an at-a-glance impression of our iSense, Invictus, StainAway and Natural Wool ranges. iSense is constructed from the softest, most resilient fibres to produce unique bounce-back qualities – no more dent marks from legs when you re-position furniture. Surprise, Suspense and Serenity are the big sellers of the moment. The latest range to be launched in the iSense collection is iSense Colours, Seduction Royale. Ask your area manager to view this product.

Sign up for the stars of the show Here are just of the few selected retailers that have purchased the exciting new merchandising system from Associated Weavers. We want more of you to take advantage of the dramatic increases they’ve seen in sales of our ranges. To get your show on the road, contact your area manager now or alternatively contact the marketing department on 01422 431103 or email displays@associatedweavers.co.uk for samples and unit prices.

presenting... Orion Twist, Shades of Autumn This contemporary wool rich carpet represents affordable comfort and warmth combined with resilience and durability in a subtly varied palette. Brockway Orion Twist is perfect for brightening the home with a subtle fleck floor covering that is destined to endure heavy traffic. It’s available in two qualities, Orion Twist 42 and Orion Twist Major 60. And it comes in a fashion palette of 12 warm natural shades. This modern classic range is made from 80 per cent pure new wool in a heat-set twist. So it’s luxurious yet hard-wearing, and ideal for the busy family home. Shaun Lewis, Brockway’s sales director, said: “Brockway’s twist pile ranges are consistently good sellers. Orion Twist is a contemporary berber style carpet offered in two pile weights. “And because this range is made from New Zealand and British wools, it means carpets looks great for longer.”

Carpet&FlooringReview Rolling with robots

Wilton Carpets has announced the commissioning of a state-of-the-art Van De Wiele axminster carpet loom, the first of its kind in the UK, at a cost of some £1.5million.

Increasing capacity by five-times over the traditional axminster looms it replaced, the high-speed Van De Wiele produces miles of premium woven axminster carpet per week, helping Wilton Carpets to meet the growing demand for its stock and bespoke qualities. Fed by Smart Creel technology, the axminster loom can seamlessly switch between colours and designs, allowing uninterrupted production of woven carpets for the hospitality industry. This world-first innovation sees robots fill each yarn feeder tube and determine the exact length required for any given carpet design, splicing automatically as one pattern switches to another. With minimal downtime, the machine dramatically improves manufacturing flexibility. “The investment in this new loom enhances the growing stature of one of the UK’s foremost commercial carpet manufacturers and has been commissioned to ensure that Wilton Carpets can continue to service its growing customer base with the efficiency and quality for which the company is known,” says James Sprint, CEO, Wilton Carpets Commercial. “The first of its kind in the UK and bristling with the latest in production technology, the loom is already having a hugely positive impact on manufacturing operations, boosting capacity while giving unparalleled quality and efficiency.” This comes as only good news for the manufacturer’s client base that reaches hospitality, leisure, public and commercial locations of all sizes right across the globe, with 1000s of locations enjoying the high-quality nature of carpet made right here in the UK. Over the course of the next 12 months, the Van De Wiele axminster loom will use enough yarn to wrap around the equator six-times. Wilton Carpets has plans to introduce another two of these highly efficient Belgian-made machines at its Wiltshire production site. T 01722 746000 www.wiltoncarpets.com

Luxury, longer

Karndean Designflooring is introducing its 1.5 metre plank design for extra impact in open-plan and large residential and commercial spaces, with the introduction of its new LooseLay Longboard collection.

LooseLay Longboard features 12 contemporary wood designs, each inspired by authentic European, American and Australian woods including pine, walnut and spotted gum, to name but a few. Enhancing its already established Karndean LooseLay range, LooseLay Longboard introduces one of the UK¹s longest loose lay vinyl plank designs to date in a 1500mm x 250mm format with a 0.55mm wear layer and 4.5mm thickness. “With demand increasing for our Karndean LooseLay across residential and commercial interiors alike, we¹re thrilled to introduce our longest format as a loose lay vinyl option,” explained Scott Cochrane, UK sales director of Karndean Designflooring. He said: “Being 40 per cent larger than our existing Karndean LooseLay wood design, our new plank format will be extremely popular with independent retailers looking to offer the flexibility and convenience of our loose lay vinyl designs, but in an extra-long design for quicker installation in large residential and commercial spaces. “Likewise, our new woods offer a wide array of sophisticated colourways, intricate design features and authentic finishes to complement emerging trends in interior design.” Developed from a wide mix of wood grains for a truly characterful floor, Karndean¹s European Oaks are split into two distinct groups. Twilight and Raven Oak offer on-trend grey and charcoal tones for a modern look with authentic knots, lightly brushed grain details and subtle distressed finishes.

“Being 40 per cent larger than our existing Karndean LooseLay wood design, our new plank format will be extremely popular with independent retailers looking to offer the flexibility and convenience of our loose lay vinyl designs, but in an extra-long design for quicker installation in large residential and commercial spaces.”

Inspired by aging French oak boards recovered from the heart of Loire Valley in Blois, Karndean¹s Pearl, Natural and French Grey Oak designs present individual interpretations of this attractive wood through the process of liming, light brushing and adding colour. Whilst the lighter tones reveal cross sawn elements across the planks for an intriguing blend of natural and manmade features, the darker tones highlight individual knots and knarls. Ideal for traditional and contemporary interiors, Karndean’s American inspired woods include reclaimed and rustic pines – Reclaimed, Antique and Weathered Heart Pine – and a contrasting warm walnut design Character Walnut. The detailing in the reclaimed timber replicates both natural open grain and manmade markings for a unique, aged look, whereas Character Walnut takes on the true colour of real walnut wood. Finally, the collection concludes with two Australian designs Bleached Tasmanian Oak and Lemon Spotted Gum. Offering a sustainable alternative to real Tasmanian Oak sourced from remote lumber yards in South Eastern Australia, Karndean¹s Bleached Tasmanian Oak presents original growth rings and subtle colour variation, but in a modern whitewashed finish. With cool, crisp lines, the subtle spotted appearance and large amounts of sapwood within Lemon Spotted Gum reflect the natural characteristics of this rich, Australian wood. Available to order from September, LooseLay Longboard by Karndean Designflooring offers a lifetime residential guarantee and 15-year commercial guarantee. T 01386 820185

Showing Flair

This year’s Manchester Furniture Show proved the ideal platform for leading rug manufacturer Flair Rugs to present the fruits of its recent labours, the brand unveiling a series of new collections and looks.

Enhancing a reputation for a trends focus and choice in design, Flair welcomed guests to an exciting new era for the company, familiar faces as well as new friends greeted at the stand by an array of updates to the Flair portfolio. This is a range covering wool, acrylic, cotton, polyester, polypropylene and natural fibres; a choice to meet all needs and desires, in terms of practicality, budget and style. Gareth Davies, Sales and Marketing Director, explains: “We’ve been delighted with the outcome of the Manchester Furniture Show, which proved an excellent opportunity to enhance exisiting partnerships while looking to reach out to new customers. We are very fortunate that our new introductions have helped us do just that, AW16 holding plenty of promise for Flair and its retailers as an exciting season looms.” The headline acts at this year’s exhibition were undoubtedly new collections, Persia and Venice. Persia introduces Eastern design to the home in no fewer than six unique hues, intricate patterning interspersed with bursts of accent colour for a real antique flavour. This rug makes the most of high quality super soft polypropylene for a superb touch and feel, enhanced by backing that steers away from jute for extra forgiveness. Sister collection, Venice, also makes full use of polypropylene and its various benefits. This time presented in two shaggy designs, Imperial and Plazzo, Venice boasts texture like no other with its pile height variation. Mixing high shaggy and low loop pile for stand-out style, Venice achieves a soft, luscious end feel that is usually reserved for more care intensive fibre types. Adding to what is already a versatile stable, Flair’s collection and design updates at the Manchester Furniture Show prove there is no let-up in the pursuit of the ultimate in rug style. Combined with a drive for product quality and leading customer service, there’s little wonder the Flair stand was a vibrant hub across the busy three-day period. T 01457 850660 www.flairrugs.com

NEWS Sound choice

Used under wood and laminate flooring, the Acoustica underlay collection from floorwise helps to combat noise, one of the biggest flooring-related concerns facing specifiers and homeowners today.

Diners’ delight

Hard wearing luxury vinyl tiles from Polyflor’s Affinity255 PUR collection of high-design wood effect flooring were recently chosen for the refurbishment of Enfields Kitchen, a student run restaurant at Gateshead College.

Using a dense rubber construction, Acoustica not only helps to combat the sound of footfall (impact noise) but also airborne sound, helping to make homes and commercial spaces quieter and more comfortable. Available in Silver (2mm) and Gold (3mm) and new Acoustica Gold Supreme (3.5mm) specifications, the underlays are available from floorwise distributors throughout the UK and Ireland. “The introduction of Acoustica Gold Supreme demonstrates the growing interest in making homes and commercial spaces quieter when using wood and laminate flooring,” says Richard Bailey, managing director, floorwise.

Affinity255 PUR luxury vinyl tiles in the popular Huckleberry Oak design were installed by local flooring contractor Floorstyles-Direct in the restaurant’s dining area. Situated at Gateshead College’s Baltic campus, Enfields Kitchen is a contemporary restaurant where all the food is made and served by students enrolled in the college’s hospitality and catering courses to give them experience of running a real restaurant as part of their training.

“Using a premium dense rubber crumb construction with a built-in moisture barrier, Gold Supreme delivers exceptional sound-insulating performance creating a noticeable difference in real-world scenarios. With increasing focus and tightening regulations on sound in buildings, the Acoustica underlay series can make a huge difference without having to resort to special acoustic flooring systems.”

Tracy Ashcroft, Assistant Principal at Gateshead College commented, “We’re so happy with the results of the refurbishment and Polyflor’s Affinity255 flooring has helped us create a contemporary restaurant interior. It’s the perfect setting to showcase the talents of our college’s young chefs to the public.”

While initially developed for wood and laminate flooring, the dense rubber sponge Acoustica Silver and Acoustica Gold underlays are ideal for use with click-system LVTs, combatting sound and helping to smooth out subfloor irregularities, relieving stress on locking profiles. All underlays are suitable for use with underfloor heating systems.

Ideal for use in heavy commercial environments such as busy restaurants, the Affinity255 collection of luxury vinyl tiles in available in 16 stunning wood effects. The range’s cross linked and UV cured polyurethane reinforcement (PUR) also protects the floor and allows for a simple, polish-free cleaning regime in hygiene critical areas.

T 01509 673974 www.floorwise.co.uk

With an innovative 2mm gauge, the Affinity255 range has been designed to be easily installed alongside other flooring products such as Polyflor’s heterogeneous, homogeneous and slip resistant safety flooring which also has a 2mm gauge. Polyflor’s Affinity255 range has impressive environmental credentials, achieving a BRE A+ rating in major use areas and Indoor Air Comfort Gold, assuring that VOC emissions are below any globally determined levels. Affinity255 is also 100% recyclable via the Recofloor vinyl take back scheme and contains an average of 40% recycled content. T 0161 767 1111

Majestic and more

Unilin are launching a brand-new Quick-Step Majestic laminate which combines extra-large planks with true-to-nature looks and practicality, the new collection is bound to revolutionize laminate flooring as we know it. At the same time, the advent of Majestic coincides with a new chapter in Unilin’s innovative production process. With a new hi-tech €10 million production line, the flooring pioneer will safeguard its leadership position and continue to fulfil its promise of top quality and service. In the last few years, interior experts have witnessed a surge in popularity of large flooring planks. Quick-Step was one of the first to offer a valid response to this trend with its iconic Largo range. With Majestic, the brand goes even further by throwing water resistance, unparalleled authentic looks and unique bevel technology into the equation as well. However, introducing a new product – especially when it’s larger and more ingenious than anything made before – into production doesn’t happen overnight. At Unilin, manufacturing new laminate products is the result of careful coordination and collaboration between several departments: R&D and design, Engineering, Information Systems and Plant Management. Everything starts, however, with Unilin’s in-house design team, which draws inspiration from virtually anything, from nature to the latest trends in architecture and fashion. NEWS Floorer explorer

Quick-Step has proudly launched a brand-new website. Welcoming about 5 million unique visitors per year, the QuickStep consumer website received a fresh look and feel, simplified structure and intuitive navigation.

To further enhance the company’s online presence, the website also includes novel features to inspire visitors and online communities. The aim? To assist customers through every aspect of floor purchasing, from choosing the right floor to after-sales services. “Quick-Step stands for stunning, high-quality flooring, as well as for top-notch customer service in every stage of the buying process”, says Tim Hennin, e-Marketing Manager at Quick-Step. “Choosing a new floor doesn’t happen overnight. It involves making decisions on functional aspects – flooring type, features such as scratch and water resistance – and aesthetic aspects – design, colour, finish, etc. With the new website, we aim to help people make the right choices faster and more easily, taking our customer service to the next level.” Complementing Quick-Step’s FloorExplorer is the RoomViewer. This practical tool allows visitors to upload a picture of a room and discover the effect of the floor of their choice on their own home interior. The new Quick-Step website also opens up a larger online community for more flooring inspiration, tips and tricks. The integrated social feed #LoveMyQuickStep, for instance, encourages and highlights conversations about Quick-Step flooring on social media platforms. Additionally, the ‘Quick-Step Stories’ section provides website visitors with a blog-like environment that bundles every piece of Quick-Step ‘learning’ and ‘inspirational’ content. www.quick-step.co.uk

Performance package

To support the launch of its dedicated UK Stock Collection roll out, Granorte has introduced a striking new point of sale unit.

Available to retailers looking to offer its customers beautiful floors and walls backed by the new 48hour delivery service, the new POS provides the perfect platform to showcase the diverse and beautiful nature of cork. Housing 54 different products, ranging from original, luxury vinyl and recycled leather cork floors, to striking wall tiles; the carefully designed and compact unit offers retailers the opportunity to add something new to the shop floor, as Paulo Rocha, Granorte, explains: “Over the last year we have been working hard on a new concept that would offer UK flooring retailers the opportunity to take advantage of the growing demand in cork floors and walls. “Following extensive research, it became clear that we needed to settle on a core product mix that offers our retail partners the service levels that today’s consumers demand, and have this housed in the UK for immediate delivery. We now have this in place and as part of the package, we are also delighted to unveil a new POS unit that really highlights the aesthetic and performance benefits of cork. “Understanding that space is often at a premium within stores, the display is eye-catching and showcases our products in a way they deserve while remaining compact in footprint, only taking up 0.4 square metres of floor space.” The stand features strong visuals that promote cork walls and floors as natural and sustainable, while also highlighting the practical benefits that include thermal insulation, acoustic absorption and underfoot comfort. With generous samples for customers to experience the beautiful look and feel of the products, Granorte invites retailers to get in touch to request delivery of this must-have addition to their store. Design star at Domotex

The Swiss designer Alfredo Häberli, one of the design stars of his generation, will be a special guest at Domotex 2017.

Häberli, whose work has gained him various international design awards, will be appearing at Domotex, the world¹s leading trade fair for carpets and floor coverings, in Hannover, Germany, on 14 January 2017. He is one of many internationally acclaimed designers, architects and interior designers scheduled to deliver keynote speeches and discuss trends and developments.. Working from his studio in Zurich, Argentine-born Häberli creates furniture, lighting and home accessories for a large clientele that includes companies such as Alias, Camper, Georg Jensen, Kvadrat, Iittala, Moroso, Ruckstuhl, Vitra, BMW, Fürstenberg and Parador. His products are characteristically minimalist and demonstrate a responsible, sensitive use of materials and an intuitive understanding of contemporary form and function. Häberli has also made a name for himself with his imaginative interiors for shops, restaurants and hotels. He created more than 60 products ranging from bathroom hooks to carpets for the interior of the design hotel 25hours in Zurich West. In every room he has placed an object that is linked to the city of Zurich. Häberli¹s extensive experience in product design and the scope of his projects and assignments, including floor coverings for various clients, make him the ideal ambassador for Domotex. “Flooring needs to be an integral part of room design while still making an individual statement. It can be designed in such a way that only a second glance reveals surprising patterns and textures. The impact is the important thing. Design should evoke emotions and reinforce the character of the room”, says Häberli. In fact, carpet design has often proven to be an area of Häberli¹sdesign competence: “Carpeting”, he continues, “is essentially a feel-good factor. It can bring warmth, comfort and color into a room.”

New inspiration for architects, planners and designers Häberli¹s presence at Domotex will be a major attraction, especially for architects, designers and planners. In his keynote speech at the Innovations@DOMOTEX Dialogues in Hall 6 on 14 January 2017 he will outline some of the elements of effective design and the ideas and inspiration that render his work fresh, surprising and original. The exchange between the top designer and his audience will prove fruitful, informative and exciting. www.domotex.de

Kenburn rush to crush

For the third year running the Kenburn Carpet Crusher will be exhibiting at this year¹s Flooring Show Kenburn’s recycling initiatives have been welcomed by the flooring industry who in particular are extremely keen to divert their recyclable carpet and underlay waste from landfill. The recycling scheme involves using either new or old postconsumer carpet and underlay waste as a fuel for “waste to energy” and the fuel provides the power for concrete kilns as a replacement for coal. Not only do Kenburn’s initiatives divert recyclable carpet and underlay waste from landfill, they also at the same time reduce ever increasing skip costs as it costs less to recycle carpet waste than it does to send it to landfill. The scheme they’ve created has also been welcomed by Carpet Recycling UK who presented their 2016 “Best Newcomer” award to one of Kenburn’s scheme members M25 Made By You Doncaster. At this year¹s Flooring Show on Tuesday morning, Kenburn will be presenting the financial and environmental benefits of installing a “carpet crusher” as part of the Carpet Recycling UK seminar to be held at 10.45am. Calum Gillies, an apprentice at Islay Flooring and Home Furnishings in Scotland, has been awarded the Contract Flooring Association (CFA) and Contract Flooring Journal (CFJ) ‘Apprentice of the Year 2016’ award, which is sponsored by F. Ball and Co. Ltd..

Along with the accolade, Calum won an all expenses paid two day F. Ball training course of his choice, together with a host of prizes from competition sponsors including: a specialist flooring toolkit and a £500 cheque from the Construction Industry Training Board. Calum was presented with his award and prizes at the Flooring Industry Training Association (FITA) training centre in Loughborough. The competition was open to all flooring apprentices and required employers and tutors to prove their apprentices’ talent in an online application form that questioned attributes including: practical ability, initiative and attention to safety. Ewan Logan, joint owner of Islay Flooring and Home Furnishings, said: “The award is very important for the trade and Calum has already started to use his tools and prizes. We are very proud of him and his work, we can send him out on jobs on his own with no worries. We are really impressed with him.” F. Ball Marketing Manager, Richard Harris (pictured left with Calum), said: “We are delighted to sponsor the Apprentice of the Year award once again this year. It is important that young people are encouraged to join the flooring industry and we hope that this award will promote apprenticeship schemes as way of entering the trade. We are really pleased to be able to celebrate apprentices’ success through this accolade. “ T 01583 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk 66 September 2016

Health, service

Floor preparation products from F. Ball and Co Ltd. have been used to create a perfect floor finish at The Willows Children,Young People and Families Unit at the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

Contractors from A&H Floor Covering Specialists were called in to install new floorcoverings throughout the building. On arriving at the site, contractors found that the existing wooden subfloors had been overboarded with exterior quality-flooring grade plywood, but the surface was not smooth enough for the installation of the specified vinyl floorcoverings. To create a surface smooth enough to receive the new floorcoverings, contractors applied a single coat of Stopgap P131 Primer, before installing Stopgap 700 Superflex smoothing underlayment directly onto the primed surface. Stopgap 700 Superflex is a fibre-reinforced smoothing underlayment specifically designed for use over ‘flexible’ substrates, such as steel and plywood, prior to the installation of new floorcoverings. It is able to accommodate for subfloor movement while creating a perfectly smooth surface, and can be ready to receive floorcoverings in just three hours. Contractors also needed to prepare existing concrete subfloors before installing the new vinyl floorcoverings. To do this, A&H Floor Covering Specialists first prepared the concrete surfaces with Stopgap P131 Primer to prevent the smoothing underlayment from drying too rapidly. Contractors then installed Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayment. Stopgap 1200 Pro is a fast setting, high performance, minimal preparation smoothing underlayment, designed for use over a wide range of subfloor types. Certain sections of the building contained deep channels that needed to be filled before the new floorcoverings could be installed. To quickly fill in the channels, contractors primed with Stopgap P131 and installed 50mm of Stopgap 600 Base deep section compound, before capping it with Stopgap 1200 Pro. Finally, to install the new vinyl floorcoverings throughout the Centre, A&H Floor Covering Specialists contractors used Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive. Styccobond F46 has been specifically designed to reduce the incidence of trowel serrations shadowing through thin vinyl floorcoverings, and was used to adhere the vast majority of the new floorcoverings. Commenting on the use of F. Ball products during the hospital refurbishment, Roy Henderson, Managing Director of A&H Floor Covering Specialists, said: “We use F. Ball products very regularly. Their adhesives bond well; you just don’t get any failures, which makes them really good value for money. It’s the same with the smoothing underlayments. We also get plenty of support from their reps; they do a lot of testing for us and they’re very helpful. You get a great service to go with the products.” T 01583 361 633 • www.f-ball.co.uk 68 September 2016

Flower on Flooring Revolutionary times for flooring fibres There have been a number of recent notable developments within the flooring sector that have either provided consumers with additional choice or changed their perception of interior design and comfort.

In the case of synthetic carpet, it could be argued that this has achieved both, as the development of new fibres have extended the options and range of use within the home. F&X Aevita yarns are created from recycled plastic bottles

Cormar Carpets marketing director David Cormack says the current trend for ‘soft feel’ carpets has brought a new dimension to the propylene carpet market and shows no signs of waning.

“Cormar set the bar with Sensation with soft touch polypropylenes. When we launched it back in 2012, there was nothing else like it. It created a new style of carpet in its own right and subsequently there has been an influx of similar ranges to the market.”

Its latest introduction is Sensation Supreme, made with 100% Luxelle fibre and developed to be a heavyweight, deeper pile carpet.

“We also added Primo Excellence to our Primo family of carpets. Made with the same, family-friendly polypropylene fibre – 100% Excellon – renowned for its stain resistance and hardwearing properties, it was created to be softer than standard Primo ranges but retains the more matt, wool-like lustre level.”

Manx Carpets says its Luxury Comfort is a "classic harmony” of a soft touch carpet combined with excellent performance characteristics. It is a 100%, two ply polypropylene carpet where the subtle shades and de-lustre fibre give an instant look of refinement and comfort.

F&X Carpets provides its environmentally-friendly Ara and Lyra to illustrate this trend, made from Aevita yarns created from recycled plastic drinks bottles, and Suretex, described as “a twist on an established favourite”.

“Aevita is the future of fibre for the home and brings all the ease of living expected from modern carpet with lower impact on diminishing resources,” says F&X Carpets sales manager Gordon Hugo. “Moreover, it is Aevita’s ability to tick all the right boxes for homeowners that makes it such an attractive proposition. Incredibly soft, hard-wearing, stain-resistant and bleach-cleanable, it really is a carpet fibre that fits with modern expectations.” With a weight of 2,400g/m2, Ara brings a luxurious and comfortable surface underfoot, while Lyra brings great value and all-round practicality in a 1,700g/m2 weight. Both carpets use a two-ply yarn for even more resilience and recovery. Cormar Carpets’ Sensation Supreme

Despite its soft and luxurious handle, the company says the ground breaking polypropylene fibre that has been engineered to feel softer and more luxurious has all the practical living qualities of a standard polypropylene, including 10 year stain warranty. Luxury Comfort is a heavy weight carpet packing in 90oz/sq yd and is available in both 4m and 5m widths.

Abingdon Flooring says polyester is a tried and trusted yarn that is particularly well established in the USA and now set for “lift off" in the UK. The main reasons for its success are its softness and its durability whilst still being bleach cleanable.

“It’s even guaranteed as Heavy Domestic on stairs. A complete package if ever there was one!” the company states. “Well, now there is an option, in fact, it’s so good we turned it into two; Lasting Romance and Deep Feelings, and what a response we’ve had.”

Abingdon’s Lasting Romance Lectern

Available in 12 colours, two heavy weights and three widths of 2.5m, 4m and 5m, it is presented on state-of-the-art display lecterns to show it in its best light.

“We see this yarn as a ‘go to’, versatile option meaning it will offer style, luxury and practicality for anywhere in the home,” says Abingdon Flooring.

Balta Broadloom marketing director Geert Vanden Bossche says: “There is no doubt that super-soft synthetic fibres are big news right now and so we’ve developed Sensit to make sure that consumers can benefit from this popular buying trend with the reassurance and great value of our StainSafe family. 70 September 2016

Carpet&FlooringReview

by Dennis Flower Sensit Heathers from Balta

“The new range is designed to provide the super-soft, luxurious feel while removing concerns about stain removal. What’s more Sensit styles are great value, perhaps the ultimate blend of softness, practicality and value,” says Geert.

“For consumers looking for the ultimate in contemporary luxury, then the silken look and indulgent softness of our Satino carpets really deliver. Made from 100% polyamide Imprel Finesse yarn, Satino carpets are not only soft but incredibly resilient and so make an excellent choice for homes looking for an enduring choice. Achieving solid sales, Satino has established itself as a key part of our line-up,” he added.

Kingsmead will launch Pastiche, Herringbone and Waterfall at Harrogate. “Using the latest Infinity technology in two ply solution dyed polypropylene, these products bring designs and patterns to loop pile carpet of a type never seen before in this style,” it states.

“Soft is definitely the new black and all synthetic yarns seem to be moving this way. With our new launch of Amazing we have combined soft with colour to give the consumer the opportunity to decorate their floor.

"Kingsmead remains the home of innovation and we believe we will continue to lead the way with product developments of this type.”

Mercado buying director Adrian Laffey says: “We are seeing a trend towards softer touch carpets. In particular the Nylon products which have a cooler feel.

“A year ago our sales of Nylon carpets were almost zero but with the soft touch feel and the great Lifestyle Floors branding we are selling serious volumes now. Likewise our sales of soft PP yarns have increased and across all categories we are seeing the continued emergence of grey shades. “The top selling colour in all our top selling ranges is now a grey tone.”

Portal power

With a host of new features, Cormar Carpets’ successful online trade portal is now better than ever, making it the place to go for online trading for carpet retailers.

Since its launch in 2011, the portal has gone from strength to strength with over £100m of business placed by retailers and 30% of all orders now placed online. New features added to the site have made it quicker and easier for retailers to use and the site is now fully responsive so that it can be accessed 24/7 via mobile, tablet or desktop PC. The updated portal offers improved order tracking and retailers can now order consumer samples online, to be sent to their customers. Retailers also benefit from faster account activation, an easier checkout facility and safe card payment. “With the increasing popularity of touch screen devices and a growing number of customers who wish to trade online, the time felt right to refresh and improve the design,” said Craig Marshall, head of sales channels and logistics at Cormar Carpets. The Cormar B2B web portal is free to all trade customers of Cormar Carpets. It will be showcased at this year’s Flooring Show in Harrogate and has recently been nominated for Best B2B website at the Ecommerce awards in London. T 01204 881234

Professional prestige

With Master Installer from the Academy for Excellence in Flooring gaining traction as one of the industry’s most prestigious badges, even experienced installers are revealing they learnt new skills during the three-day course.

An installer for over 30-years, it is people like Jon Evans who are the backbone of the UK’s flooring industry and he is one of the select few embarking on regular training, keeping his skills and knowledge right upto-date. Jon first heard of the wood and laminate Master Installer scheme through wholesalers, trade publications and websites and so embarked on booking himself onto the three-day pass or fail course, which promised to provide valuable benefits including a two-year workmanship warranty offer to his customers. “The course was hugely informative and I certainly learnt new techniques that will be invaluable for the rest of my working days,” reveals Jon Evans, All 4 Floors, Bedfordshire. “The positive impact of being accredited with the Master Installer scheme has certainly been felt and I would have no hesitation in recommending the course.” After his positive experience at the Academy and installing LVT for many of his customers, Jon has also completed the Master Installer scheme for Quick-Step’s LIVYN range of LVT: “I’ve participated in several manufacturer-led LVT courses, yet I found the Master Installer scheme invaluable. I picked up several great installation tips.” As with hundreds of other Master Installers across the UK, Jon Evans is listed on the Quick-Step website, www.quick-step.co.uk, as one of the brand leader’s recommended fitters. The Master Installer scheme is available for both wood and laminate and vinyl flooring.

High performance wood effect sheet vinyl flooring from Polyflor’s Forest fx PUR collection was recently chosen to help create a stylish interior for pampered pets at Glamour Pooch Dog Spa and Day Care in Freckleton, UK.

The concept for this retail interior was created by Beverley Wood Design, a creative consultancy service based in Lytham St Anne’s. Forest fx PUR vinyl flooring in the Rustic Oak shade was installed by the client’s flooring contractors in the reception and dog grooming areas. Beverley Wood, Owner and Creative Director of BWD commented, “The flooring chosen for this project needed to be both attractive and hardwearing enough to offer years of high performance for our customer. We selected Forest fx PUR in a classic wood design as it had a proven track record in busy retail interiors and had the advantage of being easy to clean and maintain.” Polyflor’s Forest fx PUR range of 14 wood effect flooring designs has been developed for use in heavy commercial environments such as retail interiors where high levels of foot traffic are expected. Ideal for dog grooming parlours like this one and hairdressing salons, Forest fx is enhanced with a cross-linked and UV cured polyurethane reinforcement (PUR) which protects the floorcovering’s design and provides a low cost, polish-free maintenance regime for the lifetime of the flooring. Female flooring first

F. Ball and Co. Ltd. recently held its first training course specifically designed for women working in the flooring industry. The two-day course, which was conducted at F. Ball’s dedicated training centre, aimed to equip women working in a wide range of roles in the flooring industry with a deeper understanding of flooring systems and how they work.

One attendee, Katie Cohen, Sales Director at wholesaler Lewis Abbott Ltd, commented: “I thought the course was brilliant. It was good to see the products being used as they would be in different types of installations. Working in a sales role, it’s important that I have excellent, first-hand knowledge of all the different products on the market, and it’s equally important that I can use that knowledge in context. I really enjoyed being able to get hands-on and screed a floor with guidance from the experts, especially since I was surrounded by other women who weren’t experienced floor fitters!” The ‘Women in Flooring Course’ included a tour of the F. Ball manufacturing facility, presentations on flooring products, problem diagnosis and flooring systems, and practical experience with F. Ball’s training officer using the latest F. Ball products. The participants were drawn from some of the biggest names in the flooring sector, and represented a wide range of roles, including sales, purchasing, and human resources. The course also drew international interest, with some participants coming from Romania and Ghana. It is the first course of its kind conducted at the F. Ball facility, and it is hoped that it will be the first of many. F. Ball’s dedicated training centre opened in 2010, and has since provided free training courses to hundreds of flooring contractors. The training centre features high-tech conference facilities, meeting rooms and practical demonstration areas. All courses are presented by experts from within the company’s technical department and cover subfloor preparation and adhesive selection, as well as installation advice on F. Ball’s extensive product range. T 01583 361 633 • www.f-ball.co.uk

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 76

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

Flooring factsheet from Interfloor The resurgence of rubber underlay Research into consumer purchase behaviour commissioned by Interfloor in October 2015 shows more people than ever before are buying new underlay when they purchase new carpet.

Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world.

The research suggests this is in part due to improved understanding of the various products and their benefits gained through Internet research and advice from retailers’ own sales consultants. The in-store consumer experience is key to the rising conversion rates, as it gives retailers an opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of the different products on offer. Consumers want hands-on experience of quality products which offer high levels of comfort and are fit for purpose. They are less concerned about price and more interested in long-term performance and this has led to the resurgence of traditional rubber underlays such as Tredaire Colours Red, Interfloor’s premium sponge rubber underlay. Sponge rubber underlays have been around since the 1950s for very good reasons. In fact, Tredaire launched Willow Green, the UK’s first sponge rubber underlay in 1956. Sponge rubber underlays are extremely comfortable; no other underlay product produces quite the same feel underfoot. They are also exceptionally good at minimising both impact sound and airborne sound between rooms. They are incredibly flexible and cover more applications than any other underlay type, including specialist low tog underlays for underfloor heating and thin and dense underlays for hard flooring. In a Stocklist readers’ survey published in November 2015, 30% said they were selling more underlay and although 60% find it easy to sell underlay, only 50% were using POS to demonstrate its benefits – one of the key reasons customers visit retailers is to feel samples (83%) or walk on the carpet to see how it feels (26%). Interfloor offers POS items including custom-made swatch books, presentation folders and hanging samples with instore foot testers coming soon. All are designed to help retailers sell exactly the right underlay to every customer that comes to their store.

Over 80% of those who didn’t buy new underlay at the time of their carpet purchase believe that they can use their existing underlay (57%), that underlay isn’t necessary (19%) or an expensive add-on (12%) and yet underlay is a great opportunity to improve the way the consumer feels about the total purchase – and hence the retailer.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. www.interfloor.com

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor.

www.carpenter.limited.uk

Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

THE STOCKLISTS September 2016

www.numa-online.co.uk

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 82

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 89
