Flooring Factsheet Adhesives

Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

WOVEN

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.

Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a BONDED Tipcolours. Sheared Level Loop Tip plain Sheared Level Loop versatile, textured finish that is ideal for Tip Sheared Level Loop Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then used for commercial carpet tiles. sheared to give a smooth finish. Regular Maintenance

Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.

Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers!

Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet. Use only WOOLSAFE approved products

WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs. The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.

Periodic Cleaning

When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company. If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE approved products. Look for the WOOLSAFE Mark on the bottle or package.

It is best to engage the services of a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning company. To get a really expert job done entrust the work to a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company.

These companies are fully trained, have been in business for a considerable length of time, are members of one or more recognised professional trade associations related to the cleaning industry and have a reputation for top quality service. And they use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents on your wool carpets and rugs!

If you have a problem with a carpet or rug that requires an independent inspector, a network of carpet complaint investigators, trained and registered by The WOOLSAFE Organisation is available throughout the UK and Ireland. WOOLSAFE Registered Inspectors have extensive experience in investigating the causes for carpet complaints based on their practical involvement with carpets and rugs over many years. They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers, retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can carry out or commission tests where required, and will provide comprehensive reports.

Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains.

More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any

fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see what you would actually use

• Check out the product ranges offered including the own-label options and the UK/European mix

• Ensure you understand any rules that may limit your flexibility to run your business the way you want

Key benefits

Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers.

Increase sales • ‘Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with point-of-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Access professional services • Business services • Financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts.

Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings • Regional workshops • Supplier presentations • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Benefits

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards

How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Types

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLES

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

SHEDDING

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPS

This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make

SPROUTING

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.

The original carpet tile

• shedding • pulled loops

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

SHADING

STATIC

Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOL

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

an informed choice.

PILE REVERSAL

FLATTENING

(SEE SHADING)

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONS

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

SOILING

Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave

sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre THE BEST CARPET WOOL

Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home. THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

SAFE

DURABLE

Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency.

Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason.

Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air.

Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.

Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production.

Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.

Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Made to Plan For irregular shaped rooms such as an “L” shape or those featuring bay windows, fireplaces or alcoves, fitting a carpet normally involves costly waste and several seams which inevitably will prematurely wear and look unsightly. However, Brontë avoids these problems by making your carpet to size, with no seams, following the dimensions of the plan of your room.

DID YOU KNOW? Carpet is one of the healthiest floor covering one can have. It has a pile that traps, filters, and holds harmful tracked-in dirt, air pollutants, allergens, etc., until they are properly vacuumed away, and, on occasion, properly professionally cleaned away. Hard surfaced flooring is non-absorbent, so that harmful dirt remains on the surface and becomes airborne with normal foot traffic and normal home air currents, so forcing the human lung to become the trap and filter. Carpet is also the preferred floor covering for children's environments such as schools, because of easier maintenance, less cost, and the reduction of injuries due to falling. The true cost of any floor covering is product, installation, and maintenance over its useful life. Carpet costs less as a product, less to install, and less to maintain.

SEEING IS BELIEVING – ANOTHER CHANCE TO SEE US COMING UP Missed us at Domotex? There will be another opportunity to catch up with us soon, as we’ll be exhibiting at the Buying Groups National Flooring Show at Cranmore Park, Solihull on 15 May.

Mayfair

All the main carpet buying groups (Carpet 1st, Flooring One, ACG, BRM and SMG), have got together to stage this show and with more than 60 suppliers exhibiting it’s well worth a visit. We’ll be there with all our new products – the new wools, bold multi-stripe Hammersmith and the lovely chunky Mayfair; the new synthetic for contracts – especially offices Lima Stripe; and our fabulous new colours in best sellers Mainline, Piccadilly, and the coordinating Centrepoint – so it’s definitely a show worth coming to.

NEW PRICE LISTS – NO NEW PRICES Yes - another new price list. These have just been printed and are being distributed now. But the good news is there are no price increases! Just lots of lovely new qualities with which to entice your customers. All our new ranges are included so you’ll be fully up to date.

Invoicing to go electronic We thought it was about time we joined the 21st century. So, starting in April, we’ll be moving over to electronic distribution of invoices. It’s quicker, more efficient, more cost effective – freeing up our time to concentrate more on customer service. It’s not the first time we’ve asked you all for current email addresses and many of you have obliged but there are still plenty of gaps. So please help us to help you and get those email addresses over to us – just email yours to j.watson@edeltelenzocarpets.co.uk

Say cheese! We’re heading for the photographic studios this month to capture our new ranges in celluloid (well, the digital equivalent at least). That means lots of exciting new marketing materials to help you promote the new ranges coming soon!

SOUTHGATE IS HISTORY! May we make one, final, plea to all our customers to ensure you’ve updated your records to our new address – payments are still being sent to the old one and now the old building has been sold, we won’t be picking them up anymore. Our new address once again: Unit B7, Warhurst Road, Lowfield Business Park, Elland West Yorkshire HX5 9DF

FlooringNews Collectable colour motifs Ulster have recently launched six new colourways to enhance their highly desirable motif collections: Tazmin, Sheriden and Athenia. New colours are on trend earthy, organic tones taken from a ‘heritage’ palette. New colourations will be available in all three designs: cameo/motif, pindot and runner in each of these collections. Composed of 80% wool and 20% nylon, all will be available in 4.57m, 3.66m, 2.74m, 1.83m and 0.91m colour matching widths with a co-ordinating 0.69m wide runner.

Distinguishable by a diamond motif, the Tazmin range is a contemporary interpretation of stylish patterned carpet. Suitable for heavy wear, its practicality and quality has ensured it remains a popular choice for consumers.

Further developing this range and increasing the variety of choice for consumers, three new colours have been added to this collection - Kaftan, Shadow and Umber. Sheriden, one of Ulster’s most popular ranges, is an inspirational, classical collection and presents the opportunity to create an interior of simple elegance and luxury. The extensive colour palette, which ranges from soft, contemporary tones to stronger colours, has been enhanced with two new colourways - Downton and Acorn.

Athenia effortlessly complements both contemporary and classic living spaces given its innate adaptability and elegance. A dynamic product offered in a sophisticated colour palette, Athenia has been enhanced with the addition of one new colourway - Khaki.

Polyester perfection

Mayfield Carpets has launched Galaxy, a polyester carpet that looks and feels like wool.

Made from 100% recyclable material, the new range has some impressive space age qualities: it is stain-resistant and - a major plus can be cleaned with bleach. All twelve colour options are also totally fade-proof. Such superb cleanability makes Galaxy perfect floor covering for any room in the home, ideal for the demands of a busy family.

Galaxy is the first polyester carpet of this quality available in the UK, as Paul Speakman, sales director at Penthouse and Mayfield, explains: “This range will fill a real gap in the UK market. Until now, polyester offerings have been of relatively poor finish, often with a sort of spotty-dotty appearance, so they were usually patterned to camouflage the obvious imperfections”. “It is the first time that a clean and clear, plain coloured, polyester carpet has been available here in the UK at such an excellent price point. No wonder it is already flying out of the door!” adds Paul.

“We did some research amongst our customers before we launched Galaxy. Once they saw and felt the samples and found out the price, they were ready to order on the spot!” Anti-static properties and a reassuring seven-year warranty complete the Galaxy package, which is in stock now at Mayfield.

Vinyl solutions saves 1m kg Recycling waste vinyl flooring through the Recofloor scheme has produced well over one million kilogrammes of carbon savings – equivalent to driving 120 times around the equator or taking 248 cars off the road for a year.

Since its 2009 inception, the UK’s national vinyl flooring recycling scheme has collected 1,259 tonnes of smooth offcuts, smooth uplifted vinyl and safety offcuts for recycling back into products, such as new flooring - an equivalent saving of 1,007,200 kg – or 1,007 tonnes - of CO2.

Recofloor, founded by flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor to divert waste vinyl flooring from landfill, calculated this total volume equals nearly 420,000m² or enough to cover 58 football pitches. In 2012 alone, the 449 tonnes of material collected via the Recofloor scheme represented almost 150,000m² or sufficient to cover 21 football pitches. Jane Gardner, Recofloor’s Project Manager, described the figures as a “creditable achievement” in the present challenging times. This year’s collection target is 600 tonnes.

Collections from distributors have risen 12.5% year-on-year, showing Recofloor’s approach to bulking up small volumes of waste over larger geographical areas really works. “This is an excellent, practical and popular solution to collecting smaller volumes of flooring that might otherwise be disposed of to landfill, while also saving on transport costs,” explained Jane. Drop-off sites at flooring distributors allow local contractors to deposit waste vinyl, meaning fewer visits to sites and greatly reducing the scheme’s carbon impact. She also praised the consistent efforts of the scheme’s 450-plus members, whose commitment will be recognised at Recofloor’s annual awards event at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham on March 13th. Registration for the event is now open to Recofloor members - full details via the website – www.recofloor.org/awards.php

Bonnie Clyde and Stripes

Brand New Feeling

Inspire homeowners to create coordinating interiors with the brand new Clyde & Stripes carpet collection from Domo Floorcoverings. Consisting of an array of plain and striped designs, this range is set to excite those looking for a cost-effective way to inject style and personality into their homes.

Bring on that brand ‘New Feeling’ with Cormar Carpets’ lighter weight version of its hugely successful Sensation ‘Original’ range.

Comprising 11 plain Clyde carpet styles in a colour palette including rich shades such as chocolate and moss green as well as lighter styles such as silver grey, and four bold Stripes designs in blue, grey, red and beige, Clyde & Stripes is designed to harmonise for a completely put-together look. Crafted from 100% polypropylene for ease of maintenance and durability, Clyde & Stripes is ideal for busy family spaces and is protected with five-year wear and 10-year stain warranties for complete peace of mind.

“The Clyde & Stripes collection is ideal for retailers that want to tap into the trend for coordinated living,” comments Geert Vanden Bosshe, marketing director, Balta. “We are seeing a definite move away from separate room schemes, with homeowners instead choosing an overall look that flows from room to room for greater coherency. The plain colours of Clyde complement the four different Stripes carpets to perfection, making this range an ideal solution for interlinking rooms, or to define focal points such as stairs.”

Sensation ‘New Feeling’, like ‘Original’, is made from 100% Luxelle polypropylene and has the same super soft handle and lustrous pile, but comes in a lighter weight which provides retailers with a lower retail price - ideal for increasing sales to households on a restricted budget. Available in the same 10 contemporary plain colours, including Artic Grey, Polar White and Siberian Mink, Sensation ‘New Feeling’, it will come in both four and five metre widths. Cormar expect ‘New Feeling’ to retail at approximately £2 per sq m less than Sensation Original.

“Over the last couple of years, our easy clean range has been a real hit, with sales of Apollo, Sensation and the Primo family all selling well. Being able to sell the ranges knowing that all of them are British made is an added bonus for us and our customers,” says David Cormack, marketing director at Cormar Carpets. “Sensation - New Feeling offers that fashionable edge with its lustre and texture but at a slightly lower price point making luxury carpets affordable for those on tighter budgets. We’re expecting it to be another British winner for us.”

Sensation ‘New Feeling’ is part of Cormar’s hasslefree Easy Clean collection with the same practical living qualities – stain resistant and bleach cleanable - including a 10 year stain warranty. All Cormar’s wool twist, wool loop and easy clean polypropylene ranges are produced on site at its Lancashire mills and distributed in the UK and Eire via its own delivery fleet.

Scorpio is star performer

‘Earthquake’ at Axminster Axminster Carpets are fighting for survival with more than 400 jobs at risk in Devon unless a ‘white knight’ can be found to rescue the company which traces its history back 250 years. In a statement, Axminster director Joshua Dutfield said: “Trading has been difficult and the management has been working with key suppliers, creditors and the lenders in an attempt to resolve the company's financial difficulties. We continue to be committed to working to achieve the best possible outcome for all concerned and most importantly the staff and suppliers.” “This is an earthquake in terms of the shock in the local area. It's desperately sad news for employees at a difficult time in the market generally,” said Tim Jones, head of the South West local enterprise partnership. The announcement of the intention to appoint administrators provides the company and its creditors with a moratorium during which time various options will be explored to save the business which includes Axminster’s own yarn spinners in Buckfastleigh. The company’s roots date back to 1755 and its carpets are found in the finest houses in the land including Chatsworth House, Clarence House and Brighton Pavillion. The company gained an official Royal warrant from the Queen only last year. Axminster Carpets was overhauled in 2009 with new branding and a substantial investment programme across the company from state-of-the-art loom technology through to top quality merchandising and a consumer advertising campaign. But this approach struggled to make headway as the growing recession took hold and consumer confidence collapsed for big ticket items. According to accounts filed in 2010, Axminster had debts of £12m and a pension deficit of £7m. Last year, Axminster shut its Irish business Curragh Carpets with a loss of 60 jobs. “The next few days and weeks will be crucial,” said Axminster town mayor Andrew Moulding. “I remain optimistic that something can be salvaged to ensure that this iconic name, so synonymous with quality and resilience, continues for many years to come.”

Perfect for today’s hectic lifestyles, New Scorpio is the latest carpet from Domo Floorcoverings that combines on-trend colours with brilliant performance qualities.

Delivering fantastic value, New Scorpio will allow retailers to offer an allround carpet style sure to have widespread consumer appeal. Available in a diverse colour palette of 10 shades ranging from striking red, dark beige and ocean blue, there is a tone to satisfy all design tastes. Set to attract those with a chaotic household, New Scorpio is crafted from 100% polypropylene, so it is easy to care for, and comes with a 15-year stain warranty for extra reassurance. Its robust nature is also ideal for busy rooms in the home, such as hallways and living rooms, and the carpet’s heavy domestic usage rating is backed up by a 7-year wear guarantee.

“New Scorpio is a great all-round performer, providing the durability and cleanability required by busy homes as well as coming in an array of colours to suit all interiors,” comments Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta. “With today’s increasingly busy lifestyles, homeowners tend to choose carpet styles which are practical first and foremost, but that also offer an eye-catching look and are great value. New Scorpio fulfils this demand, providing retailers with a cost-effective carpet design that is both hardwearing and stylish.” Available in four metre width, New Scorpio comes with a Texflor Felt Backing, so it is not necessary to use an underlay before fitting the carpet.

Domo Floorcoverings is part of the Balta Group, and offers innovative wallto-wall carpets for residential interiors.

Space suits stores The first Crown Floors POS lectern has landed in Britain and is now proudly displayed at S & M Myers Carpets in East Finchley, London.

Home to four ranges, including Alderley Edge with its silky lustre, the patterned Crown Wilton, the nylon saxony Dapdune Warf and the new Dunnottar Castle with its heavy pile weight of 2,990g/m2, the lectern is proving to be the ideal partner for this busy shop.

“The new Crown Floors lectern is ideal as it allows us to bring a brand new collection to our customers, without requiring extensive wall or shop floor space,” explains Alan Myers (pictured right), co-owner, S & M Myers. “Space is a real premium in our store, so the fact that the lectern offers a world of choice while taking up such a small footprint made it a win-win addition. While the majority of sales remain with traditional twist pile taupe carpets, the variety of colours and styles on the lectern allows Crown Floors to not only to tap into this market but also offer customers carpets that are a bit more exciting and inspiring.”

With large 18” square sample sizes that encourage touch and exploration and in a striking royal blue colourway, the lectern is designed to stand out from the crowd and entice homeowners. With shelving units to accommodate other Crown Floors ranges underneath the display in generously sized 9” x 18” sample books, this new unit is the ideal partner for retailers looking to expand their portfolio without sacrificing too much space.

“It is very exciting that the brand new lectern has arrived in the first store,” comments James Caldwell, UK sales coordinator, Crown Floors (pictured left). “Ideal for retailers with limited room but also a great addition for those with the existing Crown Floors wall unit, it is set to become a popular addition to carpet shops up and down the country.”

Historic innovation Old values, reminiscences of historic patterns, with the 15 new engineered wood flooring products from Parador pick up on classic flooring patterns or use special finishes to create the appearance that they were installed a long time ago and have been in use for decades

The trend towards oak remains constant in 2013 once again. Parador presents oak surfaces in various finishes and colours with “Classic 3050 Oak Old Block” - a block version that picks up on the current “used look” trend. Planks that appear to individually stick out give it the typical impression of an old engineered wood floor, which was installed a long time ago and on which dark gaps have become visible over time. The almost archaic appearance of this floor is further emphasised by the wood textures fashioned by hand, such as grains, knots and cracks.

Old pieces of wood, which were collected in the harbours of the world, were the inspiration for Trendtime 8 Seaport Oak. Individual planks bring to mind old, well-travelled packing crates, which have been weathered by wind and rain on the high seas and have collected cracks, nail holes and stamp impressions. This floor picks up on a current trend that values used materials and transfers them to a new context.

Brand new Antron

The engineered wood Trendtime 8 Oak Tree Plank is a floor for lovers of natural flooring beauty. Parador has transposed the conical shape of a tree trunk onto the wideplank here, resulting in a vintage look with tapering lines that resemble nature. This floor, which also comes as Oak-smoked Tree Plank in a darker version, has a modern, rustic appearance due to its plank shape with the hand-finished, partly cracked texture.

Solid performance Invista’s Antron carpet fibre has revealed a bold new identity and dialogue as it looks to make fibre matter in the minds of more architects and designers across the land.

Synonymous with high quality commercial carpet and with performance fibres that have become industry benchmarks, Antron fibre is one of the most respected names in the carpet business. Now as closely associated with innovation in styling, patterns, textures and colours, as it is with long-term performance, the new identity reflects the brands current positioning. “The Antron brand has been in the industry for more than 40 years and although we remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver long-term performance, we know that it has many definitions – from aesthetics to service to how long a product will last on the floor,” comments Neil Maguire, Regional Marketing Manager, Antron carpet fibre. “The new identity says we are grounded in performance but with a laser sharp focus on the needs of our customers.

“Our business is about relationships and the new brand is in line with who we are today and our path forward. We want to be seen as approachable, forward thinking and resourceful. It is also our intention to express the value we place on our relationships and our desire to bring value to our customers, whether they are designing products, spaces or trying to determine the best long-term flooring investment.”

The new brand is appearing on Antron brand literature and in all communications with immediate effect.

Wool with an extra bounce

Here is the news Created to provide commercial environments with a striking and on-trend flooring solution, the brand new In Print collection of coordinating carpet tiles from Mohawk is set to inspire specifiers and contractors throughout 2013.

Wools of New Zealand has teamed up with Anglo Recycling to launch Crumbwool, a brand new environmentally friendly carpet underlay manufactured in the UK from 100% recycled carpet fibres and 100% recycled rubber. The introduction seeks to meet the growing need for truly authentic and sustainable interiors for the environmentally conscious. Crumbwool is produced by taking the offcuts from British carpet manufacturers that would otherwise go into landfill, recycling them and then adding rubber tyres for the rubber crumb. The end result is an underlay that has superior noise reduction and insulation properties due to the high wool content. Such is its commitment to the product, that Anglo Recycling has created a dedicated production line at its UK plant in Lancashire.

Consisting of two separate designs that work in harmony, plain colour Newsroom and eyecatching bold striped Headlines, In Print carpet tiles can be used individually or mixed and matched for maximum impact. Available in a diverse colour palette that includes bright blues, rust oranges and calm greys, the tiles can be paired in seemingly limitless combinations to suit all design schemes.

In a further nice gesture, Wools of New Zealand has partnered with the UK Woodland Trust and will be making a contribution to the trust for every metre sold.

Commenting on the introduction, Steven Parsons, Innovations Manager at Wools of New Zealand said: “This reaffirms our commitment to the green agenda. We want to show the world that it is possible to have a truly environmentally friendly floor. Crumbwool fits perfectly with our mission to create wool interiors that are beautiful, comfortable and practical and have real integrity. It also sits nicely with our work with Laneve wool and together they tick all the boxes for the environmentally conscious carpet buyer while at the same time providing a very strong and salient sales message for retailers.

“Our eco- commitment has struck a cord with consumers and Crumbwool will further enhance our reputation in the market place as demand for environmentally friendly products will only increase.”

Rated Class 33 suitable for heavy contract use, In Print is also easy to clean and maintain.

“In Print is a welcome addition to our contract carpet tile range, and proves our commitment to expanding our contract portfolio in order to provide contractors and specifiers with design-focused floorcoverings that are cost effective,” comments Howard Lindsay of Mohawk.

Quick and easy to install, Newsroom tiles can be laid in either monolithic, quarter turn, vertical ashlar or brick ashlar formations.

Recycling rises 30% Diversion of carpet waste from landfill increased to 21.4% in 2012 – a rise of 30% on the previous year’s 16.5% rate, reports Carpet Recycling UK. The industry body’s success in finding new reuse, recycling and energy recovery outlets for waste carpet and carpet tiles saw 85,000 tonnes of waste carpet avoiding burial last year. CRUK’s target is 25% landfill diversion by 2015.

Of the 85,000 tonnes, the recycled and reused portion was 36,000 tonnes, while 49,000 tonnes was sent for energy recovery via cement kilns and power generation plants. Energy recovery grew by 44% or 15,000 tonnes as the high calorific value of carpets became more widely recognised and exploited. The amount of waste carpet recycled grew in 2012 by 12.5% or 4,000 tonnes as new outlets have developed and established ones have grown.

Last year also saw record levels of carpet production offcuts – more than 6,000 tonnes - diverted from landfill by UK-based members of Carpet Recycling UK. These manufacturers prevented 6,049 tonnes of offcuts from the production process going into the ground – representing a diversion rate of 99% in 2012. Recycling was by far the majority outlet at 5,241 tonnes with only 808 tonnes used for energy recovery.

CRUK Director Laurance Bird said these achievements are testament to sustained efforts across the entire supply chain in capturing rising waste tonnages, plus entrepreneurial commitment to developing new outlets and markets for all types of carpet waste. “New recycling opportunities continue to emerge as growing awareness is matched by practical endeavour, so it’s a positive story,” said Laurance, highlighting increased recycling capacity at specialist facilities able to handle carpets via reuse, recycling and energy recovery.

“It was encouraging to see new machinery investment along with growth in the use of fibres from carpets for equestrian surfaces and felts, such as underlay,” he added. “While an estimated 78.6% of end-of-life carpet still ends up in landfill, our goals for 2013 will continue to drive higher carpet recycling rates through a number of initiatives, including local authority encouragement on segregation.” Councils will be an important focus after CRUK research showed the significant contribution that separating carpet waste at Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) could make to diverting waste from landfill.

A study of HWRCs nationally found ten local authorities operating across 61 sites currently using dedicated bins to send carpet waste for recycling or energy from waste (EfW). These sites are collecting 14,620 tonnes of domestic carpets per year from 2.3 million households; equivalent to an average of 6.4 kgs of carpet waste per household per year.

During 2012 as demand for clean identified carpet offcuts increased, pilot trials have been introduced to capture the estimated 12,000 to 15,000 tonnes per annum being primarily landfilled from carpet fitting.

Snow business like show business The organisers of Interiors UK had to overcome snow and biting winds to bring in more than 24,000 visitors to the NEC at the end of January but there was no doubting the warm welcome and bright enthusiasm inside.

More than 600 exhibitors join together across all interiors sectors to present their trend-setting styles for the year ahead and there is a clear cross-over between furnishing, fabrics and floorcoverings in an increasingly fashion-led environment. Flooring companies meet a more diverse marketplace at the NEC with interior designers and specifiers in greater abundance in addition to retailers in broadly based furniture outlets as well as floorcovering stores. The flooring presentations in Hall 2 saw major new product launches including Concreate, an ultra cool urban concrete flooring plank from V4 Flooring, the latest in affordable luxury carpet in Opulence from Regency Carpets and contemporary new designs from rug specialists Mastercraft and Oriental Weavers (see reports below and opposite). The event always has some showbiz sparkle and this year’s designer line-up included Nina Campbell, Shaun Clarkson and Matt Rawlinson. Nina Campbell took up the event’s core theme of ‘Modern Retail’ and dressed each of the hall entrances with a range of in-store design themes from traditional to ultra contemporary.

Oriental Weavers Product development is a key theme at Oriental Weavers and the company had a lot to show at the NEC. With six new handmade collections introduced, Oriental is looking colourful and cheerful. Strong vibrant colours and busy patterns distinguish the new Remix collection, a 100% wool hand tufted collection which is available in eight designs including two circular options.

Two new flatweave collections were launched. The comeback of the Caucasian flatweave kelims proved to be a popular new range. The classic traditional designs are hand woven in Argentinean and New Zealand wool and available in four sizes. Serenity is a sophisticated new flatweave which is made from a mix of jute and inter-woven acrylic to add the bright colour effect, available in five colour options. There is no doubt that plain shaggy rugs are still strong. The latest launch of a super soft micro fibre polyester in five colour options is highly commercial and set to aim at all levels in the market.

Mastercraft The flatweave texture has had something of its own fashion revival in the last year and Mastercraft has made it easy with their new Hampton range of rugs in a range of contemporary designs. The material is polypropylene but with a slightly burst fibre that gives the finish a very natural appearance. Hampton is pictured here (on the rack) with Mastercraft’s Robert Dickson while shown on the floor is the company’s strong selling Mehari range – a super-soft berber style which has just added 3 new designs. Lots of other new products were on show in Birmingham including the new high quality, 100% wool Qashqai – a traditional design available in 5 designs and 6 sizes including a runner – and also new colours in the shaggy Lana. Mastercraft has a new colourbank for its best-selling modern range Galleria which must be one of the market’s best opportunities for increased margin. The quality for an inexpensive carpet is exceptional – this heavy heatset wilton run has lots of sophistication with carved and doublestitched design within an impressive portfolio of options.

Concreate It is rare to find a product developed with ecological sustainability in mind, which has the designer appeal of Concreate Flooring. A revolutionary new way to achieve the high-end architectural look of polished concrete with the convenience and versatility of a readymade floor. A green choice, Concreate is made from magnesium oxide cement reinforced with recycled textile and natural fibres giving it a tensile strength that makes it suitable for installation over most subfloors. The panels are 100% biodegradable and contain no harmful chemicals whilst remaining mould and stain resistant. Available in three shades the subtle clean lines of the micro beveled smoothed concrete panels compliment living areas from kitchen diners and living rooms to bedrooms and bathrooms. Installation is dust free, quick and relatively easy compared with other concrete systems which can take weeks to cure and unlike stone or ceramic tiles there is no grout needed, so installation can be completed in one visit. info@concreateflooring.co.uk

Carefree Regency Carpets The Carefree range from Regency Carpets dominated the flooring presentation in Hall 2 at the NEC as the Furlong stand is the first thing you see as you walk in the door.

Dates for 2014

“We like to make a good first impression!,” says Neil Valentine of Furlong. “We attract a lot of interest at Interiors as we meet more specifiers and interior designers who don’t realise that modern polypropylene carpet can be so good. They see that affordable luxury is a reality with the Carefree range.”

Regency’s eye-catching innovation in POS display is a strong seller for retailers with smart, illuminated lecterns and Carefree video screens that show the performance of the bleach-cleanable carpet to great effect. The company is promising much more innovation in 2013!

Feature : GoodWeave

11 million good reasons to buy rugs During 2012, GoodWeave reached some startling milestones. Over 148 thousand rugs were sold worldwide bearing the GoodWeave label, making over 11 million since GoodWeave started its programmes in 1995.

GoodWeave inspectors carried out almost 2,200 random inspections of GoodWeave producers in India and Nepal, including their various sub contractors’ facilities, in the rural villages. A total of 44 children were found working, and rescued. Just imagine how high that number must be at rug producers not GoodWeave certified. The next health camps at GoodWeave licensees in India will focus on the protection and treatment of workers' eyesight and commence February 20th in Uttar Pradesh. The aim is to assess and provide up to 12,500 pairs of glasses, in association with VisionSpring. Any weavers requiring eye surgery will be offered treatment at Sight and Life, on a no profit basis and GoodWeave will fund the nursing and any required glasses.

Health Programmes for Panipat and Varanasi

This follows the completion of an 18 month health education programme, which ran in Panipat District, in association with the Advit Foundation. Over an 18 month period, more than 2500 workers plus family members at 13 GoodWeave licensees in Panipat District of Haryana were given training on various aspects of occupational health and safety, medical examinations, and subsidised treatment at local hospitals if required. Manoj Bhatt of GoodWeave India says the GoodWeave run health camps are particularly effective as: "State run health services are inadequate and poor in rural India. Most of the rural people do not have access to a good qualified doctor or hospital. Qualified doctors do not want to stay and work in the rural areas, despite sincere efforts by the government to attract them such as providing a high salary package. Therefore, health camps are needed by the rural people, particularly by the low income weavers".

There are eight further community health programmes earmarked for the Varanasi area, which are due to commence March 2013. A team of paediatrician, doctors and community health workers will visit NFE Centres (non funded) and carry out medicals and advise on nutrition, cleanliness and distribute de-worming medicine.

“GoodWeave inspectors carried out almost 2200 random inspections of GoodWeave producers in India and Nepal, including their various sub-contractors’ facilities, in the rural villages.”

A licence against child labour The GoodWeave label is the best assurance that no child labour was used in the making of a rug. In order to earn the GoodWeave label, rug exporters and importers must be licensed under the GoodWeave certification program and sign a legally binding contract to: 1. Adhere to the no-child-labour standard and not employ any person under age 14 2. Allow unannounced random inspections by local inspectors

3. Pay a licensing fee that helps support GoodWeave’s monitoring, inspections and education programs To ensure compliance, independent GoodWeave inspectors make unannounced inspections of each loom. If inspectors find children working, they offer them the opportunity to go to school instead, and the producers lose their status with GoodWeave. To protect against counterfeit labeling, each label is numbered so its origin can be traced.

GoodWeave also sets contractual standards for companies that import certified rugs. Importers agree to source only from GoodWeave certified exporters in India, Nepal, Afghanistan and any other country in which GoodWeave rugs are available. In the UK and other rug-importing countries, only licensed importers are legally permitted to sell carpets carrying the GoodWeave label.

The British Wool column Surfaces in America saw wool on the rise

Wool House opens doors The doors will be flung wide open this month, for what promises to be a superb showcase for real wool. The Campaign for Wool intends to fly a sheep flag from the roof of the Grade 1 building and rally the visitors to Somerset House to visit the Campaign’s tremendous lifestyle showcase - Wool House. The highlight of the event is clearly the fibre – but it will be seen in so many guises within the sixteen rooms that it is the sheer versatility of wool that is bound to amaze. Designers and artists have risen to the challenge of ‘showing the best that wool can be’ and with an interior industry powerhouse of design behind it, there is no doubt that there will be plenty to inspire and that is exactly the intention of Wool House.

British Wool sees interest grow in the USA The British Wool Marketing Board returned to Surfaces, the leading floor show in America in January to promote British Wool for carpets and rugs. Set in Las Vegas, the draw for the trade show is clearly more than just floors but a lot of business continues to be done despite the casinos and shows that beckon once the floor walking ends. The natural and sustainable agenda is unrelenting in the USA and as it marches on, wool rises with it. Retailers were keen to know which manufacturers had quality wool ranges and many were looking to expand the selection they offered in their showrooms. “After a long induction, wool – which has long been a designer product, is becoming stronger at the top end of mainstream. Retailers are beginning to appreciate that they can make more from selling a few good wool carpets and rugs than they can from selling a lot of mid-range manmade. This is an increasingly attractive situation in a market that has suffered particularly badly in the economic downturn,” Tim Booth, Product Development Manager said. On the whole, retailers were more optimistic than last year and although fewer people attended, all manufacturers felt the quality of visitor and enquiry was high. “It was a positive show for British Wool because we can feel the general interest in wool is rising here and our role is to support that and help our wool processors and manufacturers make the most of it,” he added.

A programme of events that begins on the day it opens will help to highlight different aspects of the wool story. Sheep, always popular at Campaign events, will arrive on the second day and will remain there for three days to connect the origin of the fibre with the finished product. “It is hoped that the visitors will appreciate that wool is a fibre that grows naturally – it is not manmade and it will be there year after year to ensure quality textiles for future generations,” Phil Stocker of the National Sheep Association said.

Wool House – opens this month in London

“There is something for everyone at this event and we are delighted that product on show in fashion, art and interiors is made from wools from Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, South America, Italy, the United Kingdom and many other countries – showing just how important wool is to the global textile economy,” Bridgette Kelly of the Campaign for Wool said. Wool House opens on 13th March and runs until 24th March, admission is free. Further information on the event and the daily workshops and House Talks are available on campaignforwool.org

EcoBuild invites campaign back to promote wool

Wool returns to EcoBuild 2013

The Campaign for Wool will be at Eco-Build this month (5th-7th March) to help promote the natural suitability of wool for the eco-design community. Exhibiting with Thermafleece to promote wool for interiors and the built environment, the Campaign will take its natural story to the exhibition at ExCel in London, where the number one subject is environmental sustainability. “We have been very lucky to have great support from EcoBuild for the Campaign for Wool and they requested that we attend again this year to ensure we can send out a strong message for wool and offer information and education to the visitor of this highly successful show,” Christine Armstrong of Thermafleece said. from The Stocklists

Flower on Flooring News News Out of sight, but not out of mind The introduction of premium product has seen underlay increasingly adopting a more high profile role within flooring sales in recent years.

Retailers have an opportunity to upsell with Floorwise Hyper Lift

Traditionally seen as a useful, add-on sale by retailers, the combined effects of more choice, higher performance and the trend for consumers to make their homes more comfortable on the back of the housing market decline, has seen more consideration given to the purchase of underlay to ensure warmth, comfort and reduce energy bills. The Carpenter ranges of underlay, for example, now numbers 11, all of which have been developed for use in specific locations, including contract, domestic and also for the shipping industry. The company recently launched an underlay recycling scheme, described as a UK first. Helen Rowberry, Carpenter national sales manager for underlay, comments on the rise in customer demand for luxury products: “We’re seeing growing demand for premium underlay, not least because customers want a product that is going to stand the test of time. Paying cheap often means paying twice and customers are buying better quality underlay with the understanding that is going to last longer. “Carpenter has a number of premium underlays and is developing higher end products that will compete with the very best crumb rubber. By offering luxury weight polyurethane (PU) products we can offer the quality of crumb rubber with the many practical advantages of PU lightweight, easy to install and durable. It¹s also the perfect underlay to be used in high-traffic areas such as offices, because it recovers 90-95 per cent of its original state when pressure is removed from above.” 100% recyclable PU underlay from Carpenter

Richard Bailey, Floorwise managing director, discusses the benefits of upselling PU underlays: “Retailers could benefit from selling-in quality, helping consumers to recognise the longevity and long-term comfort benefits of a better quality product. However, PU underlays all look remarkably similar, making the sell-in a difficult proposition, so retailers have to be really clear on why one is better. “The most important factor is defining PU underlay’s long-term performance,” he continues, “emphasising the need to explain that density is better than thickness. A denser underlay of a given thickness will mean carpet stays comfortable for longer. And for rooms that have high traffic, such as living rooms, hallways and stairs, the densest affordable underlay is really a prerequisite. “Floorwise¹s Hyper PU Underlay collection features three clear density groups in medium density (MD), high density (HD) and super high density (SHD), helping retailers to avoid blurred lines. Clear and tangible, these different groups make the upsell just a little easier and are another reason why Hyper is one of the most successful underlay brands in the market,” says Mr Bailey. Steve Woodhead, Interfloor marketing director, says the company is seeing continued growth in its Tredaire and Duralay underlays: “Demand for our high density Tredaire PU products, like Sensation, Dreamwalk and Softwalk remains strong. We’re also seeing a resurgence in demand from retailers for our ultra high density crumb rubber underlays, such as Duralay Treadmore and System 10. “These are unbeatable 400kg/m3 density products with 100% recovery so they are very popular for high traffic and heavy furniture areas.” Interfloor has recently launched Tredaire FR7, its first flame retardant PU underlay. This 145kg density underlay, with a 7mm thickness, is specially designed for both domestic and contract installations where flame retardancy is specified. FR7’s unique construction includes a polyester reinforcing mesh which provides excellent dimensional stability and ensures clean release from the subfloor on removal. The underlay is classified for heavy contract use (BS5808:1991) and has high thermal resistance (1.93 togs).

by Dennis Flower Ball & Young reports that point of sale material will also be available and that further innovations will be introduced in the future to match new trends and demands, with all underlays made in the UK to the same British Standard of its new Connoisseur.

Back in 2010, Penthouse Carpets, one of the UK’s big five manufacturers, started recycling carpet waste and making it into an eco underlay. Now the company saves itself £25,000 each year in waste disposal costs and, at the same time, diverts 200 tonnes of waste a year from landfill. Ecofelt is 100% recycled. A founding member of Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK), Penthouse sends soft waste (woven wool fibres) to Anglo Felts, another CRUK member, which is just five miles away from Penthouse’s factory in Rochdale. In a classic example of closed loop recycling, the waste is backed with recycled rubber crumb and turned into underlay.

Interfloor’s flame retardent Tredaire FR7 is innovative

“Retailers could benefit from selling-in quality, helping consumers to recognise the longevity and long-term comfort benefits of a better quality product.”

This luxury product is suitable for any domestic or commercial installation. It gives excellent insulation and acoustic qualities whilst also protecting the carpet. Our Ecofelt is 10.5mm thick, has a tog rating of 2.5 and weighs 75oz.

Penthouse also recycles post industrial hard waste. These off-cuts and side strips are shredded and composted by specialist company 4Recycling, ready for use as organic layers in land reclamation projects.

Anglo Recycling observes that the market is saturated with oil-based products. Polyurethane underlays have become a behemoth, whilst sustainable felt is developing at the fringes, it states. Last year, the company launched its new premium underlay Recowool and crumbwool underlay, made from the off cuts from British carpet factories that otherwise go to landfill. It finds consumers are increasingly looking for 100% recycled products that offer performance and comfort. Insulating floors has never been more important, the company states. British Gas, EDF, Eon and Npower increased household energy bills between 6%-10.8% this winter, an average annual increase of £78-£125. Crumbwool underlay is designed to help reduce energy bills with its leading tog ratings and is a sustainable option, made from 100% recycled materials. QA Products is adding two new brands of PU carpet underlay to its extensive range. High-Line is its new range of medium domestic carpet underlays within the Essentials brand group, providing a step-up from the successful Designer entry-level range. Skywalk is the company's new range of luxury carpet underlays. This is included within its Performax brand group of high performance underlays, along with the existing Mayfair luxury range. Both ranges of underlays have been designed to offer visual appeal to the end-user, with distinctive product packaging and printed backing to the rolls, coupled with attractive marketing support. Ball & Young states that there is real interest from its customers in higher specification underlay in the middle and upper market sectors and has launched Connoisseur, the second generation of Cloud 9 as a result. Manufactured to BS5808 (1991), it is a high density, luxury, upmarket underlay seen for the first time at Domotex, featuring a new designer backing to further enhance its sophisticated appearance.

IVC extends its strength IVC, the largest Western European manufacturer of vinyl flooring for residential applications, has reached an agreement with Balta Industries, on the acquisition of 100% of the shares of Trinterio, manufacturer of laminate flooring and MDF products, with production facilities in Vielsalm, and offices in Sint-Baafs-Vijve.

Balta Industries had previously purchased the 50% of Trinterio which it did not already own from Ackermans & van Haaren.

This acquisition takes place concurrently with an agreement between Unilin n.v., a division of Mohawk Industries, and Ackermans & Van Haaren, on the acquisition of 100% of the shares of Spanogroup (with Spano in Oostrozebeke and Dekaply in Erembodegem). The transactions must still be approved by the relevant competition authorities.

In 2012, Trinterio has achieved a turnover of 180m Euros through the Balterio Laminate Flooring Division and Spanolux, a producer of MDF panels. The company has 375 employees. Filip Balcaen, main shareholder and Executive Chairman of the IVC Group: 'Balterio and Spanolux are complementary to our current activities. They will further strengthen IVC’s position as a leading player in hard floor coverings. It is our intention to commit additional investment to further increase their competitiveness'.

With 1200 employees, the IVC Group, with branches in Belgium, Luxembourg, the United States and Russia, aims at a consolidated turnover of 530 million Euros in 110 countries in 2013.

All for one! Penthouse Carpets is well-known in the trade. After all, it has been supplying quality wool floorcoverings to retailers for 40 years. However, few people are aware that, between them, the 76-strong workforce owns the company.

The unusual ‘co-operative’ is thanks to Penthouse Carpets’ founder, John Hawker. In 1972, John made a rug, sold it and the company was born. The business prospered. In 1994 John wanted to release his investment from the £15 million turnover company. However, he did not want to threaten the livelihoods of the employees who had contributed so much to the Penthouse success story.

A deal was struck and a holding company created with a majority of shares held by Employee Benefit Trusts and used for the benefit of the employees. Now the workers own the company through share options.

Does it make a difference? Paul Speakman, sales director, is certain it does: “It is the reason for the singular culture which runs through the Penthouse organisation, from boardroom to factory floor — and back again. And, as far as we know, we’re the only company to operate like this in our market.

People who visit us say that they can feel it - the friendliness, the openness - that it is almost palpable. It’s not surprising really, because having people who actually own the company doing everything on a daily basis creates an enormous sense of collective responsibility. Everyone does their best because they care - it’s their business and their future that is at stake.” The mutual ownership arrangement has an impact on workforce stability too. A glance at staff records reveals a very low staff turnover and 21 people with more than 20 years’ service, whilst ten of them have notched up over thirty years each. Sales office manager Janice Lloyd boasts an impressive 38 years. It is not just the Penthouse staff that benefit either, according to Paul. “You have to remember that when you speak to anyone here, you’re speaking to someone who owns the company”.

“We like to think it’s the equivalent of always dealing directly with the managing director!”

Feature : Independent wholesalers

Champions of choice Wholesalers are at the heart of the flooring industry with a range of roles that has helped the trade remain competitive in these tough times. In the popular phrase of the moment, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and while some notable wholesalers have folded under pressure, those that remain have been growing in strength and influence.

In many trades, wholesalers perform a mundane, stockholding, breakbulk function. In flooring, they are anything but boring with some of the most savvy buyers in the business and lots of commitment and personality in what are commonly family firms.

They are an important enabler in four key areas: supplying small traders who wouldn’t otherwise get an account with manufacturers; supplying independent retailers with ranges from manufacturers they don’t do business frequently enough to warrant an account; providing own range opportunities; and finding niche products from around the world.

It’s all about choice, says Simon McHale, MD of Solent: “Every time another small distributor disappears, the retailer will end up paying a slightly higher price for the cuts he needs, and the choice of product available to him will be smaller next year. There will be less opportunity for the retailer to be different from his competitor down the road, and therefore, less reason for the consumer to buy from him. “It is vital therefore, for the long term survival of the independent retailer, that they support the smaller independent distributor as much as they can.”

Solent’s drive and commitment is what makes the wholesale sector successful. “The difference between us and one of the large groups is that we run this business with an understanding and a passion, and maximising the profit figure for shareholders is not our primary objective, we just want to do what we do better than anyone else, and be the best independent wholesaler there is,” says Simon who runs the firm with his sister, Claire, a business their father Tom started in the 60s. Columbia has a similar pedigree. “It’s a business based on strong relationships. We’re a family firm with nearly 50 years in the business,” says Spencer Groom. “We know what it takes to stay successful in this tough climate. It’s all about service with speedy quotes and fast delivery.”

Own label ranges like STS’s Goldline (above) give retailers the chance to stock exclusive lines and avoid price comparisons

“We are a problem solver – from bathrooms to ballrooms! We cast our net far and wide and there aren’t a lot of people we don’t know in the business. These connections and the depth of knowledge give us access to products all over the world.

Columbia has increased its stock of its own label and re-branded ranges to help retailers offer differentiated products which aren’t directly comparable to other stores and internet suppliers. Many retailers find wholesalers’ own label ranges a strong marketing advantage, an approach more commonly associated with the buying groups but which wholesalers can offer on a more ad-hoc basis.

STS have grown strongly on the basis of own label. A major player in the contract market, STS says its retail business has “grown dramatically” in recent years. “We have concentrated on great service and great products from increased stock,” says Ron Belcher of STS. As stockholding has increased by a third with two depots now stocking carpet, STS has taken on more ranges and carefully selected products that can sell well in a competitive market. “We are good at picking winners.” says Ron. “We now have an excellent product choice for retailers with great exclusivity across our Goldline label which includes some major best-sellers like Ravensbury, for example, our 80/20 wool twist. ”STS is also a major trade stockist for leading brands such as Cormar and Lano.

“It is vital for the long term survival of the independent retailer, that they support the smaller independent distributor as much as they can.”

“It goes without saying that you have to have great prices and great service,” says Antony Stapleton of Rackhams. “We differentiate ourselves with a strong, quirky personality and we are well respected, and I hope well liked - in the marketplace.

Columbia has increased its stock levels, especially of own label ranges that retailers can rely on for speedy delivery and competitive advantage. 60 March 2013

“We are at the sharp end of credit in the trade so we have to be savvy to help traders and retailers as much as we can while protecting ourselves,” said Antony. “We have to have very good systems to manage credit and, for example, to maintain smart levels of stock so we can offer an excellent delivery service without incurring excessive costs.”

by David Spragg Rackhams’ depth of knowledge has given them an edge with a strong range of own label carpets comprising 21 synthetic twists, all of which are selling well, says Antony and a good portfolio of competitively-priced mainstream manufacturers products.

More recently, Rackhams is making a bid to increase margins across the trade with a return to wool with Palace Twist, a smart 80/20 with finer double-sheared finish - a modern classic says Rackhams - which is available in 50 and 60oz weights. The role of wholesalers as an economic buffer in this recession has served retailers, fitters and the manufacturers well – providing some additional “liquidity” in the market while credit terms have got tighter and many suppliers have been closing accounts. Wholesalers deserve greater recognition for investing in more stock and service, sustaining choice in the market and providing more options for independents to make a margin – whether it’s on a mainstream polypropylene or by sourcing something exotic in silk from the orient. And as Simon McHale says, supporting independent wholesalers helps towards the High Street’s own survival.
