It’s the season of goodwill. It’s time to invite Invictus in.

Invite Magnificus into the master bedroom

Magnificus is an award-winning product that features the very latest yarn technology in our unique iVinci SDO StainAway construction.

In true saxony style, the pile is deep and the feel is luxurious. It’s another example of our

revolutionary tenth-gauge solution-dyed fibre technology which, at 2210gm, makes it ideal for heavy-wear domestic use. Fifteen subtle colourways will suit virtually any décor.

Invite Sirius into the dining room

In a place like the dining room, spills and

splashes can soon spoil the effect of a new carpet. So Sirius, with its 20-year stain and

wear warranty, is the ideal choice to make

mopping up an easier task. Sirius is a 2370gm

twist that comes in 14 subtle, homely shades to make dining a pleasure. And fusionbac backing keeps in the heat and makes fitting simple.

Invite Centaurus into the loft

Centaurus is the natural choice for loft living. It’s a cut-pile saxony in 100% polypropylene,

with soft-sparkle technology – new and different for someone’s favourite hideaway haven. Whether it’s Centaurus, Hercules, Magnificus,

Pegasus or Sirius, your Sales Manager will

guarantee a speedy, pre-Christmas delivery.

Make the most of these popular styles – undoubtable 2017 victors from the Associated Weavers House of Invictus.

Invite Hercules upstairs

Even a Roman superhero would appreciate the supersoft feel of Hercules on the stairs and

landing – and hallways and spare bedrooms would appreciate Hercules as well. This

1190gm twist is another fine example of the versatility of our unique iVinci fibre construction.

Its fifteen shades give an unparalleled choice of softness and durability for sure-fired resistance to strong feet.

Invite Pegasus into the living room

All Invictus products are available in 2m, 2.5m,

3m, 4m and 5m multi-width variants, so for a room that’s usually the largest in the home,

this beautiful heathered textured carpet gives 4m or 5m choices offer great economy and flexibility. One of the earliest styles to be launched under the Invictus banner, Pegasus is

soft underfoot, but its heavyweight 2370gm

pile makes it durable and hard wearing for the busiest place in the home.

A room should never allow the eye to settle in one place. It should smile at you and create fantasy. Juan Montoya

The Contempo™ collection does just that, it allows interior decoration the chance to inspire to fantastic themes of pattern and colour. Themes that create an eclectic but co-ordinated link throughout the home, and not just in one single area. With our Nexus™ and Bauhaus ranges we have chosen complimentary and analogous colours that blend, synchronise and harmonise interior design.

Carpet&FlooringReview University challenge

A floor preparation system from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has been used to install 2,700m2 of floorcoverings as part of a renovation project at the University of Glasgow Library. Contractors from A&H Flooring installed a variety of floorcoverings over both plywood and concrete subfloors in the ground floor entranceway and the downstairs breakout area of the library.

Working on individual sections of the Library at a time and using fast track products meant that floorcoverings could be installed quickly and the building could remain in use throughout. The fast track system comprised Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane, Stopgap 1200 Pro high performance smoothing underlayment and Styccobond F46 pressuresensitive acrylic adhesive.

Polyflor pina colada

Heavy commercial Affinity255 PUR luxury vinyl tiles from Polyflor were recently chosen to complete the stylish interior design scheme at The LiquorLab, a new cocktail bar at the Southwater development in Telford, Shropshire.

The LiquorLab is Southwater’s first cocktail bar, with a laidback, industrial inspired design scheme created by local commercial kitchen and interior fit out company Catering Centre UK. Affinity255 PUR luxury vinyl tiles in the Huckleberry Oak shade were installed in the lounge, seating and bar areas to create an inviting space for customers to socialise in. The luxury vinyl tiles were straight laid in the main seating area and laid in a herringbone pattern in the raised seating area. Huckleberry Oak features rich hues in a realistic wood effect design with intense grain detailing and authentic surface textures. Contractors installed multiple floorcoverings onto subfloors. prepared with a variety of F Ball products. Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive was selected to install wood-effect vinyl sheets on approximately half of the area in the entranceway, including the raised plywood ramp near to the entrance. Styccobond F46 was also used to install vinyl safety flooring on the area directly in front of the entrance’s sliding glass doors. Styccobond F46 is a solvent-free, pressure sensitive adhesive that provides strong initial tack and high bond strength. It will also reduce the incidence of trowel serrations showing through thin vinyl floorcoverings when rolled with a paint roller. F. Ball’s Styccobond F41 carpet tile tackifier was used to install luxury grey Milliken carpet tiles on the other half of the entranceway area and on the entire lower floor. Styccobond F41 dries to create a permanently tacky film that prevents ‘loose-lay’ carpet tiles from moving, but allows individual tiles to be lifted and replaced easily when worn or damaged; ideal for high-traffic areas like the library entranceway. Roy Henderson, of A&H Flooring in Glasgow, said: “This was a tricky project because the building is always in use and other tradespeople required access to the site, but F. Ball’s products meant we could do areas separately and quickly; minimising disruption at the university. I’ve used F. Ball products from the start of my career - they’re dependable and they do what they say on the tin.” T 01583 361 633

Matt Taylor, Owner of The Liquor Lab commented, “We’re delighted with the finished look of the bar as the flooring perfectly complements the modern, stylish décor and furniture. Our staff also find the flooring easy to clean and maintain everyday.” Developed for heavy traffic commercial environments such as the leisure sector where there are high levels of footfall, the durable Affinity255 collection features an eclectic mix of 16 authentically reproduced wood plank designs in a wide plank format, incorporating both traditional styles and contemporary trends. This product’s 2mm gauge means that it can be easily installed alongside other 2mm vinyl floorcoverings including Polyflor’s homogeneous, heterogeneous and safety flooring ranges. Affinity255 LVT also features a cross linked and UV cured polyurethane reinforcement (PUR) which protects the floor and allows for a simple maintenance regime. Polyflor’s Affinity255 range has impressive environmental credentials, achieving a BRE A+ rating in major use areas and Indoor Air Comfort Gold, assuring that VOC emissions are below any globally determined levels. Affinity255 is also 100% recyclable via the Recofloor recycling scheme and contains an average of 40% recycled content. T 0161 767 1111 www.polyflor.com

NEWS All set for tech at January show Visitors to the 2018 January Furniture Show will find that not only does the show have a new look and refined hall identity, it is also a trailblazer for new technology. The four day show which runs from 21st to 24th January 2018, at Birmingham’s NEC, will be one of the first major shows in the UK to use the new Poken system. The system uses smart, contactless technology to ensure that exhibitors don’t miss any customers and visitors can have information emailed direct to them, so they no longer have to carry heavy brochures or literature. A brightly coloured box on every stand will be an e-reader for Poken and every visitor’s badge will be ‘smart’, so tapping it against a Poken box lets the exhibitor know they visited – so even if a stand is busy, visitors can guarantee they won’t be missed and can automatically request product information. For exhibitors - who can read the Poken information in real time on their stands, it means that they no longer have to worry about missing buyers they want to see. The Poken system is completely secure, no personal data is recorded or transmitted and it’s also eco-friendly as brochures and information can be sent electronically, saving printing as well as carrying. This is a major advance for the show and the organisers are very excited about its introduction in January. The technology isn’t the only thing that’s new, the refined identity will make navigation easier for visitors and an advanced exhibitor search facility on the show’s new website allows visitors to pre-plan their visit and plot the stands they wish to visit before they arrive. Halls 1 and 2 are the halls for Premium Design, and will feature high-end and contemporary UK and International brands. The Flooring Showcase will also be housed here and will be joined by the Fabrics and Soft Furnishings Pavilion, which moves from Hall 1. Showing their latest collections for 2018 in the Flooring Showcase are Abingdon, Forbo and Furlong among others. Joining them will be rug companies including, Gooch Oriental, Think Rugs and Elite Rugs Collection. Hall 3 is for Decorative Accessories and it will be awash with lighting, art, mirrors, ornamental items and kitchenware. Hall 4 is the Living & Dining hall and will be the place to find mainstream cabinet furniture from both UK and international exhibitors. Finally, Hall 5 will be home to large upholstery companies, beds and mattresses. Known as Living & Beds, this hall also has many exhibitors who have collections specially designed for the contract market. Attracting over 20,000 visitors the show is a one-stop shop for major group and independent buyers souring new collections for their stores and design projects and contracts. www.januaryfurnitureshow.com

NEWS Training by numbers

As the year draws to a close, the Academy for Excellence in Flooring has revealed its trained someone for nearly every day of the year, with 350 people passing through its doors for specialist training. Some 146 installers developed their skills in the Academy’s specialised training bays, learning to install Quick-Step wood, laminate and LVT flooring to the very highest standard. Of these, 122 were at Master Installer level, underlining the growing influence of the badge among flooring installers. Now with 340 wood and laminate and 165 LVT Master Installers active in the UK, there is no doubt that the scheme is enjoying growing coverage across the country. As word of the scheme spreads, more and more homeowners are choosing Master Installers through the Quick-Step website. In fact, such has been the success of the scheme that being fitted by a Master Installer, means that Quick-Step floors will come with a lifetime workmanship warranty on installation. “The Master Installer scheme certainly offers both installers and homeowners significant advantages,” says Lee Thompson, technical manager. “It’s good to see so many installers realise the benefits the scheme can have for business and we look forward to expanding the network further throughout 2018.” The Academy for Excellence in Flooring has also trained some 214 staff from builders merchants, retail and distribution businesses. Providing tailored content on product and installation, the courses have received excellent feedback, with attendees finding content hugely useful and informative, giving them the knowledge to inform customers better. One national builders merchant has already secured 18 dates for 2018. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

Bagging a perfect result

A range of subfloor preparation products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd., have been used to prepare the subfloor of a store in Plymouth, prior to the installation of vinyl floorcoverings. Stopgap 850 Exterior floor levelling compound, Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane and Stopgap P131 primer were used on the 300m2 area, by contractors from Derwent Flooring Plymouth. The regional F. Ball representative advised the contractors to use Stopgap 850 to bring the subfloor to the same level throughout, to repair the uneven subfloor, prior to the application of a floor smoothing underlayment and adhesive. Stopgap 850 Exterior was applied over the uneven screed. Stopgap 850 is a non-structural exterior grade levelling compound for use in light to medium duty applications to smooth and level rough or mechanically damaged concrete or sand / cement screeds. It is ideally suited for smoothing areas such as balconies, patios, garages and walkways and is unaffected by rain or frost when set and dried. Stopgap 850 is also suitable for internal application over damp, uneven concrete and sand/cement screeds, prior to application of Stopgap Waterproof Surface Membranes, which made it the perfect solution for this refurbishment. There was no structural damp proof membrane previously in place in the store and after applying the Stopgap 850 to provide an even surface, contractors applied Stopgap F77 Waterproof Surface Membrane to act as a moisture barrier over the surface of the subfloor. Stopgap F77 is a solvent free, high performance, two part epoxy resin system, which cures to provide a Waterproof Surface Membrane, capable of impeding the passage of rising damp where relative humidity values are up to 98%. Stopgap P131 primer was applied over the whole area, to create a surface smooth enough to receive the new floorcoverings. T 01583 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk

NEWS Feel the difference

A free marketing pack helps to maximise upsell opportunity of the new Feel the Difference premium underlay collection from floorwise.

Containing a leaflet dispenser, handy information leaflets, in-store poster, window sticker, vehicle sticker and carpet swatch stickers, the marketing pack joins the Feel the Difference swatch book to make a compelling argument for using the underlays beneath any new carpet. “Feel the Difference represents a great chance for retailers to get across the difference a premium underlay can make beneath a new carpet,” explains Richard Bailey, managing director, floorwise. “We’ve put together a free marketing pack to maximise in-store presence and provide consumers with the reasons why, helping retailers to present an argument that can boost their bottom line.” Each underlay within the collection, whether the recycled PU foam of Elegance, the sponge rubber of Inspiration or the rubber crumb/felt of Prestige; is made in an Ultra High Density specification for maximum performance and comfort. This ensures homeowners can choose their preferred material without compromise. Richard continues, “Some homes prefer the familiar look of sponge waffle while others are more open to recycled PU foam as a premium underlay material, so we’ve made sure that Feel the Difference offers a choice in each of the key product types. This is an underlay collection based on premium comfort and performance rather than pigeonholed by a particular material.” With a new look to promote luxury and lasting performance, the Feel the Difference underlay collection is ready to make homeowners consider the difference a high-quality underlay can make in their home, resulting in improved revenue from underlay sales for retailers. Goodbye to the ugly

Invisiweld is making commercial vinyl from Itec Contract Floors more attractive to end-users with improved realism on wood and stone effects and uninterrupted architectural and mineral decors. Rather than the wide and ugly seam of hot weld installation, Itec’s Invisiweld installation method relies on a chemical bond to fuse edges together, leaving a join that’s barely noticeable, even on close inspection. Offering a more seamless look to the Belgian-made range of two and four-metre wide flooring, an Invisiweld joint is also strong, reducing the potential for joint failure. Suitable for use on all safety, acoustic and decorative flooring from Itec Contract Floors, a practised Invisiweld installation is also faster, saving time and money, as well as making new floors look better in the process. With Itec’s four-metre width option and Invisiweld, there are also fewer but stronger seams in large areas, minimising potential failure hot-spots. Mark Wilson, sales manager, Itec Contract Floors, comments: “Invisiweld offers tangible advantages for installers and end-users, making for a floor that’s faster to install, stronger and better looking. Contractors are turning to the method as a way to deliver clients a realistic look without sacrificing the value, durability and low maintenance of sheet vinyl. Invisiweld is a win-win for everyone and is compatible with all vinyl flooring from Itec Contract Floors.” Through a patented needle system Invisiweld applies a chemical liquid to taped seams with a 10-minute curing time all that is required to make for a stronger and less-visible join. Developed in German laboratories, the technique has been field-tested extensively and is now used by a growing number of UK-based flooring contractors as a better way to install acoustic, safety and decorative sheet vinyl flooring from Itec. Fuel for thought

F. Ball and Co. Ltd. are offering members of their loyalty card scheme the chance to save up to 10p per litre on fuel purchases with the launch of the new F. Ball Fuel Card.

The Fuel Cards are available (terms and conditions apply) to F. Ball loyalty card members and allow them to purchase diesel and petrol at over 7,000 filling stations across the UK and Ireland, at prices lower than the advertised pump price. When using the cards, typical savings are about 5p per litre compared to national average prices (and up to 10p per litre on motorways). The F. A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!

Celebrate the Twelve Ways of Wool-mas! Christmas is a season that seems to come around faster and faster every year. Nevertheless, we all, to some extent embrace Christmas as the highlight of our winter season. Business often benefits too as house-proud homeowners are desperate to get the flooring all done before the critical deadline date!

We three sheep not of Orient are! Herdwicks in Cumbria. Photographer Chris Everard

1. Wool will look better for longer as it is seriously strong, bulky and robust! Yes our first woolly way is all about appearance because Christmas carpets have to look good - even after the visitors have gone home.

2. Wool will resist spills - Christmas is the time for making merry so you need to choose wisely! Sometimes those little liquid top-ups and pretty canapés spill onto the floor - so our second woolly way is all about the miracle of a fibre that naturally repels liquid and allows you to promptly clean up and leave your carpet as good as before.

3. Comfort and good times - our third woolly way is all about comfort! Admit it - we love to be pampered at Christmas! Wool has that super comfy, underfoot luxury - nothing matches it - so get your customers to take their shoes off and try it themselves!

4. Natural and good - you simply have to applaud Mother Nature for her woolly ways as wool and its many benefits are created naturally. This Christmas we want to praise the sacred sheep for quietly growing this super fibre called wool!

5. Breathe easy - it is easy to forget that the atmosphere in homes can be a surprising - even scary - hotbed of contaminants. So at Christmas the perfect gift is wool’s ability to absorb those and purify the air that our loved ones breathe. Sounds like a bit of Christmas magic? Actually, its pure science!

6.Wool is warm - baby its cold outside…so the song says! When we step inside we want warmth and coziness! Wool is the original cozy fibre - there is nothing like coming home to wool after a cold journey.

With this in mind, the column this month reflects that old chestnut ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’. But this is a unique woolly spin The Twelve Ways of Wool-mas - to capture those key points that make a wool carpet the very best present for the home! 7. Adaptable - Wool will also adjust with the seasons - so consumers can rely on it to keep their home at a ‘just-right’ temperature - winter and summer. A miracle - it may seem like one but wool simply breathes and adjusts with the home in exactly the way it did on the sheep!

8. Good Value - the budget is always stretched at this time of year but evaluation of initial cost and long-term value are critical as its always best to pay a little bit more to gain a lot more!. Wool will be the one that repays that wise value judgement over and over again.

9. Colour Perfection - colour clarity and definition - the amazing vitality of carpet colour banks reflects a choice that the wool industry can be really proud of.

10. Pattern - Stripes to swirls to geometrics to dots and florals wool reflects creative carpet brands with great style and its strong enough to maintain that pattern even after lots of footfall.

11.Texture - people are loving the new styles of crunchy texture loop styles are coming back with a vengeance and that woolly crimp creates the most amazing visual and tactile textures to put a real stamp of style on the home.

12. Sleep Safe - Christmas is when the tree goes up and the lights go on - very pretty but caution is critical. So our final ‘Way of Wool-mas’ is safety - this is the true gift of wool. It has a natural resistance to fire - making wool carpet a safer and more sensible carpet for the home.

We wish you all a very happy and safe Christmas and hope you celebrate the many amazing ‘Ways of Wool-mas’ in 2018! 40 December 2017

Happy new year for Hannover

Domotex doesn’t open in Hannover for another three months, but it’s already becoming clear that the 30th edition of the world’s leading tradeshow for carpets and floor coverings will be a very strong and innovative affair, sporting an extensive line-up of new features.

For one thing, the show has a new hall configuration and venue layout that will make it a lot easier for visitors to survey the market and connect with the exhibitors and trends that matter to them. The show will also have a strong overarching focus on the megatrend of product individualization, as reflected in the keynote theme of “UNIQUE YOUNIVERSE”. This theme will find concentrated expression in Hall 9, which will house an inspiring wonderland of creatively staged display zones by exhibitors, artists and budding young designers. “The upcoming show will immerse its visitors in a totally new and captivating world of trends, innovations and lifestyle,” commented Dr. Andreas Gruchow as the responsible Managing Board member at Deutsche Messe. “Exhibitors and visitors alike can look forward to a wealth of concrete ideas that will help them grow their business and keep up with the trends and innovations that are shaping the future of their industry,” she added. The enhanced Domotex format has been well received by the carpet and floor coverings industry – as can be seen from the high level of exhibitor registrations. “We are well up on the number of exhibitors confirmed at the same time in the build-up to Domotex 2017.We’re also significantly above expectation on booked display space,” Klaproth said. “This further underscores Domotex’s importance as a global marketplace and setter of trends for the carpet and floor coverings industry. At this rate, we are on track for around 1,400 exhibitors from over 60 nations,” she added. The revamped hall configuration physically clusters allied product groups, making it much easier for visitors from all professional backgrounds – whether wholesale or retail, architecture, interior design, the skilled trades, or furniture or furnishing retail – to find their way around and survey the market. Getting down to specifics, halls 2 to 4 now house the biggest offering of hand-made carpets and rugs seen anywhere in the world. Halls 5 through 7 are home to a unique selection of machine-woven carpets and rugs. Hall 8 is the gateway to the latest carpet creations from the world’s most innovative designers and labels. The displays of resilient floor coverings and luxury vinyl tiles are concentrated in Halls 11 and 12. And Halls 12 and 13 house the show’s displays of parquet, wood and laminate flooring. Hall 13 also houses displays of the latest flooring application and installation products and solutions. www.domotex.de

NEWS Listening to industry

Lancashire-based underlay and flooring accessories manufacturer and distributor Interfloor appears alongside Prime Minister Theresa May in the 2016/17 Parliamentary Review. Established by former minister The Rt Hon David Curry in 2010, The Parliamentary Review is now a key fixture in the political calendar. Interfloor features alongside the Prime Minister and a small number of outstanding organisations in a document that looks back on the year in industry and Westminster. The main aim of the Review is to showcase best practice as a learning tool to the public and private sector. Across all policy areas, The Parliamentary Review is sent to over half a million leading policymakers. The articles in the Review act as both a blueprint for success and a template for reform. The Prime Minister commented that this year's Parliamentary Review follows a significant year in British politics' and this is reflected in the articles from leading journalists and best-practice representatives alike.

New York city living

Luxury vinyl tiles from Polyflor’s Camaro PUR flooring collection were used to create homely accommodation for visitors at Staycity Aparthotels Paragon Street in York, North Yorkshire. Approximately 5500m² of Camaro PUR wood effect luxury vinyl tiles in the White Limed Oak design were chosen to complete the interior design scheme inside the 197-room aparthotel. This new build hotel in York city centre, the company’s seventh hotel to open in the UK, features fully furnished studio, 1 and 2 bed self-catered apartments with their own lounge, dining areas and kitchens.

Interfloor CEO John Cooper and his wife Gill with Andrew Neil (keynote speaker) and Julia Hartley-Brewer (host, pictured left) at the gala launch for the Parliamentary Review. The PM's former cabinet colleague, Sir Eric Pickles, who was recently appointed Chairman of the Review, said it has never been more important for government to hear the views of business and the public sector in a constructive forum. It is also a vital time to share best practice and progress. The Parliamentary Review's director Daniel Yossman concurred, saying “Interfloor and other hardworking organisations from across the country have come together to make this year's Review possible. “Sharing knowledge and insight with both peers and government is essential work and I am delighted that this year's Review will reach every corner of the British economy. “It’s always a real joy to hear from policymakers who tell me that something they have read in the Review has had an effect on their thinking. “It is my belief that innovation is contagious, if only it is given the platform to spread. It is the Review’s purpose to provide this platform and I am confident we are fulfilling it,” said Daniel. T 01706 213131 www.interfloor.com

Flower Floweron onFlooring Flooring Expanding choice provides more options for laminate growth With wood grain continuing to prove popular within laminate flooring, the growing number of options in this area is seeing further additions launched to meet consumer demand.

Xylo Flooring says laminate flooring can achieve all customer aspirations, including the welcoming feel delivered by wood-effect designs. These can also combine with shades and modern colours in other rooms to create many striking, different effects.

A wide range of options are available, including the company’s Urban Click range, a heavyweight 9mm product with shades ranging from the rich, dark textures of Carnoustie to the lighter tones of Diamond Creek and the golden brown of Avenel. All have a realistic grained surface and have the appearance of an oiled floor to give the feel of matt oak timber, the company states.

Egger has identified the four leading trends for 2018

Xylo Flooring provides laminate flooring for all settings

Laminate is suitable for use with underfloor heating because it can cope with the variations in temperature, says Xylo Flooring. Its durability means it is also often chosen for use in commercial premises, such as shops and offices, which have a high footfall.

Haro has successfully marketed laminate floors for over 30 years in Germany and continues to define standards. Examples include the dual moisture protection system aquaTec, the large format Gran Via or the quietest laminate floor in the world.

It has focused on the requirements of top product quality, natural look and feel and excellent practicality. This has led to the creation of installation systems such as Top Connect, surface finishes such as

Egger reports it has identified the four top flooring trends for 2018, seen throughout its new Pro Flooring Collection 2018-2020 featuring the latest 140 decors and texture trends.

Light Living builds on the popular loft and Scandinavian style, providing a calm and contemporary feel within a bright and light interior by using a mixture of decors in white and grey tones.

Modern Classic takes traditional finishes and creates a twist with new colour concepts and can be used across the home, revitalising classic decors and coordinating them with modern interiors.

Used Novelty is unique and eclectic, combining creative, lively and vintage decors that work well in entrance halls and large open spaces by bringing character and interest.

Egger’s fourth design Pure Nature uses warm, elegant timbers and natural materials so a timeless and rustic interior can be achieved, creating relaxing, calm effects best suited to living and sleeping areas, receptions or waiting rooms.

Quick-Step has noticed a trend for rich, dark interiors

soft matt, the revolutionary noise insulation system Silent CT and some of the most beautiful wood styles in the sector, the company states. These have been created using the highest quality materials, such as HDF coreboard and choice of overlay or style paper used. The company also uses its own impregnation system to maintain high quality standards.

Parador further states its laminate flooring is characterised by uncompromising quality, including Aqua-Proof core boards and an elaborate edge impregnation made of hydrophobic wax, oil and paint, to ensure reliable moisture protection is delivered on all planks. It can therefore be used in all rooms, even kitchens and damp areas, the company concludes.

Quick-Step International PR and sponsoring manager Sophie Hautekeete says: “You only have to scroll through Instagram to see there is a trend for luxurious interiors, echoing the rich and cosseting décor of member¹s clubs. Dark green wall colours teamed with panelling, worn brown and ruby leathers, rich velvets and strong wallpaper prints are bringing a sense of luxury and indulgence to spaces; perhaps as an antidote to the uncertainty faced outside of our home.

“We¹ve echoed this luxury with a brand-new floor in our elegant and waterproof Eligna laminate collection with Metallic Ceruse Gold, a dark oak with a grain pattern traced in gold,” she continues.

Haro says this has seen the creation of superior laminate floors that can scarcely be distinguished from real parquet.

Parador states that its laminate flooring is characterised by its unique variety of standalone decors, different formats and matching surface textures. This claim is reflected to perfection in the new products featured in the 2018 laminate flooring collection, it continues, including oak decors which predominantly reveal a synchronous surface texture that is continuing to set fashion standards.

Haro is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Moths – a manageable menace Moths are both a menace and a myth for carpet retailers and manufacturers according to the industry’s response to our survey in the summer in which 46% of retailers said that complaints had gone up a lot, especially in the last two or three years.

MO

“We as an organisation cannot dictate what manufacturers do (and donšt) do, but we are certainly getting more and more calls from consumers. Part of the problem I think is the confusing terminology that manufacturers use. Consumers assume that words like ‘moth resistant’ and ‘moth proof’ mean that their carpet is immune from moths. Manufacturers insist it is a small problem but I have no doubt it is growing and our fear is that it could become a ‘bad news’ story in the media,â€? he added.

But the actual number of complaints is still so small that the tabloid mythology of a moth menace is over-stated and many manufacturers are happy to deal with the issue on a case-by-case basis, offering replacements where carpets have been well maintained and still suffered damage.

And this is at the heart of the issue.Vigorous and more regular vacuum cleaning is proven to be an almost complete solution to the problem – especially vacuuming in the dark recesses behind furniture where moths larvae likes to lurk.

“...retailers should encourage their customers to buy the best vacuum machines available and use them more frequently to reach the parts where moths are likely to lay their eggs. Kevin Hockney, SEBO

“Centuries' old advice remains strong - It is important to ventilate your home, clean regularly - so keep the vacuum cleaner  active under beds and furnishings and ensure your wardrobe is not over full providing a hiding place,’ says Bridgette Kelly of the Campaign for Wool. “Moths love dark, stuffy and undisturbed quarters. Just remember, moths are discriminating against manmade fibres in favour of wool because it is clearly better and safer for them - there is something to be gleaned from that.â€? The other weapon against moths is pesticide treatment of the wool fibre in carpets and this was once an almost universal solution across the industry. But environmental regulations have restricted the ability of wool spinners to treat the fibre in this way with water authorities strictly controlling chemical discharge and only a few manufacturers are still able to apply the treatment.

The reality appears to be that complaints about moth damage to wool carpets have increased markedly since 2010 and the issue has moved up the country when once this was seen solely as a Southern problem.

Andrew Stanbridge, chief executive, the Carpet Foundation commented: “We first became aware of the escalating moth problem two or three years ago. It started in the South East but now it is spreading northwards.

Westex carpets are treated in a highly controlled way. “Westex installed the first award winning moth-proof re circulation application process whereby no chemical is put to waste effluent, the company says. “Safety to humans has been paramount in the design of the mothproofing product Westex uses. It has had the full rigours of scientific testing, both toxicologically and ecologically, to establish that there is no harm to human health.

As treatment has become more difficult, Axminster Carpets is typical of the new approach to handling the issue and have made a virtue of their Moth Guarantee – a policy that involves no chemical treatment of carpets but an undertaking to replace affected carpets so long as they have been properly maintained.

“Wool is a natural product and we’d like to keep it that way, says Kaouther Montacer-Shilvock of Axminster. “I think families would prefer their wool carpets not to be treated with pesticides just like I’m sure they don’t want bleach residue from cleaning their synthetic carpets. And anyhow, the larvae has to have started eating your carpet before they ingest enough pesticide to be affected.

“Yes, that means you have to look after a luxury natural product with some more effort, just as you would treat a fine cashmere jumper with more care. But for carpets, that’s relatively easy – it mainly means vacuuming more regularly and reaching the areas behind and under furniture where moth larvae might gather, she says.

The Axminster Carpets Moth Guarantee was launched in May as part of the company’s ongoing drive to go 100% natural in their production cycle. It offers to replace carpet up to five years from installation provided it has been well maintained and fitted properly, using their own Axfelt underlay.

Other wool houses take a similar approach – more informally dealing with consumer complaints as they occur and judging them on their merits.

READER SURVEY A related issue is the reduced power ratings on vacuum cleaners which has reduced the level of performance in some models in line with the European Commission directives which introduced a maximum power rating of 1600w in 2014 which drops to 900w in September 2017, this month.

Kevin Hockney of the carpet industry’s favourite vac manufacturer Sebo said consumers would need to be more selective. “Motor size has never been a great indicator of a macines performance but it will now be more essential than ever to select machines where the design and technology has optimized the suction power from the smaller motor.

Annual end-of-year performance survey

“And retailers should encourage their customers to buy the best machines available and use them more frequently to reach the parts where moths are likely to lay their eggs.”

Business gets set for Brexit

Natural moth repellents are likely to be the way forward for the industry and trials are underway on new treatments by wool spinners at present which are likely to become more generally available within the next two years.

Business and consumer confidence has had a roller-coaster year with the Brexit threats and opportunities trading punches, with little clarity as to the real impact on the economy.

Suppliers offer post-installation treatments including ‘natural’ pesticides and repellents and a range of treatments based on the powerful broad spectrum insecticide cypermethrin. In The Stocklists survey, only 14% of retailers said they stocked such products.

Ryalux applies a natural insect repellent branded as Ryaprotect which is “environmentally-friendly, and its ingredients are endorsed for use by the World Health Organization,” linked to a ‘promise warranty’ to repair or replace any moth-damaged carpets.

Reports from the negotations have not enabled business to plan their futures with any certainty so far so what are your expectations for the year ahead. Exchange rates are affecting imported flooring and concerns about interest rates have dampened consumer demand for household items in the last quarter. Our annual end-of-year survey takes the temperature of the flooring industry. Are consumers sitting on their hands, waiting to see what happens? Are likely increases in inflation a good thing to prompt spending? Have suppliers got their prices right after a period of instability? Please let us know how 2017 was for you - and what you think are the prospects for 2018. And there is, of course, our popular ‘soapbox’ section where you can say what you really think - anonymously!

• The carpet moth is smaller than a common house moth; with a body about 5mm long and a wingspan of about 14-18mm. • The carpet moth will rarely fly and are more likely to be seen hopping about at floor level.

The online survey takes less than four minutes. It’s anonymous and doesn’t need any form filling. Please help us inform the industry.

• Carpet moth larvae feed predominately on keratin found in natural fibres such as wool, and so can live on any carpet with some wool content.

Visit www.thestocklists.com and click on the survey banner to take part.

• An egg hatches in a week or so but then larvae can live in that state for up to two years before developing into an adult moth that then survives just a couple of months but can lay 200 eggs in that period!

• If left undisturbed, they can go on to infest wardrobes and drawers and cause additional damage to wool clothing as well as silk, fur and leather garments.

Retail report: Autumn sales drop as footfall declines

Sales for household goods hit a six month low this Autumn with declines in footfall says the latest retail report from the BDO High Street Sales Tracker for the end of October. Total retail like-for-like sales dropped by -5.2%, the worst result for any month since April 2016 (-6.1%) and the largest year-on-year drop for October on record. Homeware sales were down by -0.5% this month, but from a strong base of +11.6% for October last year. The result marked the first negative month for homeware since April, and only its third negative month in the yearto-date. Footfall on the High Street reflected the trend with a decline every week in October, reaching a low of -2.9% down in the last week of the month. “The continuing pressures on disposable income combined with a drop in consumer confidence have hit sales hard this month,” says Sophie Michael, head of retail and wholesale at BDO LLP. “The sharp decline in October sales will no doubt bring anxiety to UK retail in this critical trading period. “With margins already tight and Black Friday looming, retailers will be working even harder at promotional activity and product differentiation to convince the reluctant shopper to spend with them. We may see a real polarisation of winners and losers on the high street in the near future.” 50 December 2017

6,000 reasons to stick with F Ball

NEWS

F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has released its annual Recommended Adhesives Guide (RAG). Featuring 6,000 up-to-date adhesive recommendations for floorcoverings, endorsed by around 200 leading international manufacturers, the RAG is the flooring industry’s most trusted guide to adhesives and floorcovering compatibility. It also provides details of the F. Ball guarantee that is applicable when using a recommended adhesive.

Along with familiar F. Ball adhesives, the RAG features Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS, a revolutionary temperature tolerant, pressure sensitive vinyl adhesive which has been specifically designed for use in conditions, which are subject to extreme temperature fluctuations as low as -20°c and up to +60°c, such as conservatories or heavily glazed areas and is suitable for use over normal underfloor heating systems. Following extensive testing, the RAG now includes recommendations for using Styccobond F49 with PVC flooring accessories such as skirtings, coving and capping, offering a low hazard alternative to traditional contact adhesives. Styccobond F49 is now available in a smaller 500g Handy Pack, to deliver added convenience and minimise waste. F. Ball’s Marketing Manager, Richard Harris, said: “Using the wrong flooring adhesive can often result in costly remedial work or can even result in total floor failure. The F. Ball RAG ensures contractors are able to specify the most appropriate adhesive for each flooring installation..” Produced as an A5 printed book, an interactive version of the RAG is also available on the F. Ball website (where it is constantly updated throughout the year), and as a free app via the Apple and Google app stores, enabling contractors to search the RAG even when out on site. NEWS Victoria secures stake in ceramics

Victoria PLC, best known for its portfolio of UK carpet companies, has set out to secure a major share of the European ceramic flooring and tiles market with the announcement of two acquisitions costing £300m in the same month in this growing sector. On November 16, the Group gave notice of the £250m acquisition of Keraben Grupo S.A., a substantial European manufacturer of branded floor and wall ceramic tiles based in Barcelona with two manufacturing plants in Spain. Keraben has an annual turnover of more than £100 million and 80% of its production is exported to more than 125 countries.

Part of the costs of the deal will be met by a placing of 22,988,506 new ordinary shares at a price of 783 pence per to raise gross proceeds of approximately £180 million. The deal has been well received by the City. Victoria chairman Geoff Wilding commented: “We believe that Keraben is a high-quality addition to the Group. Notwithstanding its further strong organic growth prospects, the acquisition of Keraben will be materially earnings accretive in the first year of ownership and continues to increase our geographic diversity. Post-completion, over 50 per cent. of Victoria’s earnings will be generated from outside the UK – continuing our transformation into a genuinely international flooring business.” “We are delighted by the level of support we have received from both existing and new investors, with the placing oversubscribed by a multiple of the funds sought,” he said.

“Over 50 per cent. of Victoria’s earnings will be generated from outside the UK – continuing our transformation into a genuinely international flooring business.” This latest deal followed a previous announcement that the Group has agreed to acquire Italian ceramic flooring manufacturer, Ceramiche Serra S.p.A. for cash consideration of up to £50 million. Serra, operating from sites in Serramazzoni, Sassuolo (near Bologna), the heart of the Italian ceramics industry, manufactures ceramic flooring, which is sold domestically and exported internationally. It sells to a combination of wholesalers, retail groups, and independent stores throughout Continental Europe, North America, and the Far East. These acquisitions marks Victoria’s first move into the ceramic flooring market, which is the largest flooring sector in the world, representing over 60% of flooring sold globally and 30% of flooring sold in Europe. The Victoria board says it believes that there is significant opportunity for further acquisitions in the sector, which should result in a number of commercial, operational and financial synergies. For the year ended 31 December 2016, Serra generated audited revenues of over £25 million and completion of the acquisition is expected to take place in December 2017. On completion, the enlarged Victoria Group will have approximately 2,400 employees and operate from more than ten sites in the UK, five in Australia, two in the Netherlands, one in Belgium, two in Italy and two in Spain. Flooring factsheet Luxury underfoot

from Interfloor

Demand for more luxurious flooring products suitable for use in all areas of the home was instrumental in leading manufacturer Interfloor’s decision to introduce its highest density PU underlay range. Interfloor Sales Director Gary Cowley said: “The trend for increasingly luxurious and comfortable interiors means that many of our retail customers are keen to add firmer PU products to their offer. Now with our new Premium High Density range they can.” The three products in the new Premium High Density (PHD) range are all 180kg/m³ and offer superior protection for carpets that is longer lasting and better performing as well having impressive “green” credentials.

New PHD Chromium 9mm, the standout PU underlay in the range, has high performance Textron backing to give it more dimensional stability and cleaner cutting during installation as well as exceptional ‘shock absorber’ properties to help give it a longer life.

PHD Titanium 8mm and PHD Palladium 10mm have a polyethylene with reinforcing scrim backing. This backing also helps increase dimensional stability, is resistant to tearing and is easy to cut and trim. The PHD underlays boast superior heat insulation properties and have high acoustic ratings to reduce noise. They are also made from 100 per cent recycled foam. “Consumers will love the high performance features of our new PHD underlays, while fitters can’t fail to be impressed with how easy it is to install. Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

from The Stocklists

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 58

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

Associated Carpet Group www.smartercarpets.co.uk Contact: Richard Moore Tel: 01942 825520 rjmoore65@googlemail.com rmoore@smartercarpets.com

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 60

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 61

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 65
