Multi-Level Loop
Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
LOOP PILE Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop. Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality. Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.
THE STOCKLISTS April 2014
CUT PILE Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas. Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours. Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home. Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 5

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
www.greendalecarpets.co.uk Contact: Rob Harding Tel: 01432 852000 Fax: 01432 852005 rharding@greendalecarpets.co.uk
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,
any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see
The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 8
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents
• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.floorwise.co.uk
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!
Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter
• shedding • pulled loops
Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 10
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

Flattening
Shedding
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Shading
Indentations
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet
SAFE
Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
DURABLE EASYCARE
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
Comfort
COMFORT
Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.
Safety
The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet.
100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.
britishwool.org.uk campaignforwool.org THE STOCKLISTS April 2014
Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 17

More shades of ‘Grey’!
The question is often asked ‘will strong colours ever make a return to our floors?’. The answer of course is that no one really knows. The most popular colour trend at the moment is ‘Grey’ highliting a more varied selection of shades from very pale silver greys to dark anthracites. These new greys are complementing the new trends in fabric and furniture. We are seeing that existing grey shades are steadily moving up our colour charts. We are also adding new exciting greys to our most popular ranges Harvest Heathers, Everest, Santorini and Temptation to satisfy your customers’ needs. See also the new ranges of Distinction, Imperial Twist, Home Twist and Inspire for greys to suit today’s market.

FlooringNews Tasteful timber
Capturing the timeless style of wood, the new Ultimate Timber collection from Avenue presents the elegant look and character of wood flooring along with premium performance and underfoot comfort qualities of high end cushioned flooring.
Based on the most popular wood designs, the new Ultimate Timber collection has been updated with the addition of new decors and resplendent grains such as elm and walnut. The collection now houses 17 beautiful wood-look decors in an assortment of tempting shades, from the new light and smoky tones of Camargue through to the deeper chocolate tones of new Barriques and Fair Oaks bringing warmth and character to interiors. The range ties in the timeless look of natural wood, yet by focussing on modern detailing also caters for the latest looks desired for contemporary interiors. Two trend-led highlights of the collection are the chalky, whitewashed grain of Chaparral Oak showing a gently aged look, and the geometric herringbone pattern of Louvre, a parquet flooring design rapidly gaining popularity again. The appealing decors also show planks of varying widths and lengths to suit all sized areas of the home, so are a flexible choice equally for living and dining rooms as well as kitchens and hallways.
Fading fast
Fading World rugs from the Vintage collection by Louis de Poortere will keep retailers at the forefront of interior style. Capturing the trend for worn-looks, Fading World takes inspiration from Damask and Persian designs worn by the ravages of time to create a vintage look with all the benefits of a brand new rug available in eight standard sizes.
Along with sophisticated looks Ultimate Timber delivers high performance and comfort underfoot. The tough PU layer offers protection against dirt and scuffmarks, and power backing the flooring has excellent impact resistance - all guaranteed with a 15 year wear warrantee. Suitable for heavy domestic use, Ultimate Timber will retail around £24 per metre squared and introduce quiet as well as style, with 17dB sound insulation softening the noise of footfall. “The Ultimate Timber collection brings together the luxurious image of wood with excellent performance to match,” comments Victoria Hemelaer, Product Manager, Avenue Floors. “We have updated the aesthetics of the collection to match modern flooring trends but high performance remains throughout. Ultimate Timber makes for an extremely comfortable, easy to maintain and quiet floor for any room of the home.” T 0800 032 3970

Featuring an anti-slip backing for peace of mind, the wool and cotton chenille mix of Fading World gives the ideal combination of durability and softness with a delicate appearance that suits the ethos of the design perfectly. Sitting alongside the delicate tones of the sister Cameo collection, Fading World offers a richer palette of colours ranging from blue night and mineral black, through dark pumpkin and scarlet to jade oyster and pink flash. Alan Russell, UK Sales Manager, Louis de Poortere: “The Vintage collection has become incredibly popular and is full of looks and colours that are really ‘on-trend’. Fading World is a perfect example of the depth and creativity of the collection, its distressed antiqued look is perfect for homes wanting a splash of antique style with its deep rich colours adding a contemporary and dramatic twist. Fading World sits perfectly alongside the trend for vintage and upcycled furniture pieces, with its colours contrasting to add vibrancy to otherwise pared back interior palettes.” Adding strength to the Vintage collection, Fading World underlines Louis de Poortere as a supplier at the forefront of flooring style, giving retailers the opportunity to provide customers with the latest in on-trend styles at price points that remain eminently affordable. In its familiar striking royal blue, the brand new Crown Floors lectern is the perfect addition to the shopfloor of flooring retailers right across the country.
“We are delighted to be included in such a select list,” says Sales Director Eamonn Prescott. “House Beautiful is one of the premier interior design magazines and it is wonderful that they have acknowledged the Artistry range for quality and value for money.” T 01562 829966

With perfect proportions that achieve the fine balance between maximising shop space and allowing the carpet range to shine, the new Crown Floors lectern is available for three of the brand’s most desirable collections, as well as the three brand new 2014 ranges of Parkland, Wilton House and Sheringham. “We’ve created this lectern unit to make sure that everyone can benefit from Crown Floors,” explains James Caldwell, sales coordinator for the brand. “With a powerful look and a mix of great value on-trend and timeless carpet collections, for those retailers fortunate enough to have the space to take advantage of our impressive wall unit, Crown Floors has become a major brand in-store. However, for those with stores where space is at a premium, the lectern makes complete sense, allowing them to display up to six Crown Floors ranges anywhere in store or where space allows.” The attractive lectern is available displaying the new Parkland, Wilton House and Sheringham collections and existing Roseland, Penrose with its coordinating stripe, and Alderley Edge ranges. With a single range housed on each lectern, space is given to large feeler swatches of all colours, with a header board showing striking lifestyle images and key selling points. Displaying carpets this way, without underneath storage needed for additional samples, means a compact footprint, a key target of the unit: “Space is at a premium within stores, yet many retailers are keen to carry the prestige of the Crown Floors name,” continues James. “With the small footprint we’ve made the stand takes up as little room as possible while still proudly displaying beautiful carpet and the Crown Floors brand.” Both existing and new retailers can choose from any of the collections with an option to have two, four or six units supplied. This allows freedom to choose the most suitable Crown Floors ranges for their customer base and lecterns are available for delivery in March. T 0800 0773301 36 April 2014

Classy Classen
The Classen Group combines the best from the worlds of design and laminate floorings into their new ecological design flooring ‘Neo by Classen’. The ecological design flooring based on CSF attracted considerable attention at Domotex in January.
The striking new Vita flooring collection from Granorte combines the unique patterns and textures of wood flooring with the acoustic, thermal and comfort benefits of cork flooring.
“Within the framework of the trade fair campaign Innovations@Domotex, we were able to come up with real innovation on our stand,” the manufacturer commented.
Featuring a highdefinition reproduction of beautiful wood decors atop a highdensity cork surface and protected by a high performance PUR coating, Vita delivers 14 stunning looks. Including on-trend white-washed and grey oaks, as well as larch and ash, Vita delivers incredible 1000dpi clarity for life-like realism, but the look is only half the story. Using the natural properties of cork, Vita provides spaces with acoustic, thermal and comfort benefits, negating many of the disadvantages of other hard flooring types, while still providing an easy to care for surface. With an integrated cork underlay featuring Microban antibacterial protection, Vita can also contribute to a healthier space.
The Classen Group presents an ecological design flooring - made in Germany - which is absolutely free from PVC and thus also free from evaporating phthalate softeners and it is produced with a new production method using brand new materials technology. The base material - composite solid fibre (CSF) newly developed by Classen - is actually a polymer-coated wood fibre which makes the flooring more robust and thus makes it impervious to moisture. The multilayer Sealtec surface - also newly developed by the Classen Group - seals the digitally applied authentic finishing decorating surface. The special composition helps form the Sealtec sealing coating together with an elastic surface which has a high load capacity. Waterproof and resilient, healthy and recyclable and also easy to renovate and - thanks to Classen’s fast laying Megaloc system, very easy for laying, the company describes ‘Neo by Classen’ as “the ecological design flooring for an environmentally conscious generation." Fast to install thanks to Uniclic and with a micro-bevel to add subtle definition between each plank, Vita is ideal for DIY installation yet retains Class 32 performance for use in commercial environments, underlining its durability and quality. “Vita certainly takes cork flooring to a new space,” says Paulo Rocha, product manager, Granorte. “We are using the positive practical benefits of cork, teaming them with the widespread appeal of wood and the low maintenance offered by the high performance PUR HotCoating. The end result is a floor with incredible realism, that is easy to care for and that makes for a more comfortable, quieter and warmer surface underfoot.” T 01785 711 131

Ideal Academy
Quick-Step Master Installer, Martin Sands of Kileys Carpets, Eastbourne, has been called in to help House Beautiful magazine put the finishing touches to its Multi-Generation Home, a major exhibit at this year’s Ideal Home Show.
Quick-Step laminate flooring has been used throughout the showcase of modern interior design and so it was only fitting that a Master Installer ensured that the floor was fitted to the highest standard possible. Although not necessary for the temporary Multi-Generation Home exhibit, Master Installers are approved by Quick-Step to offer a two-year warranty on workmanship and have been through an intensive three-day pass or fail course that really tests their floor fitting skills. Martin Sands (pictured far left with Jack Slaughter) is just one of a growing number of highly skilled wood and laminate flooring installers to carry the Quick-Step Master Installer identification card, helping homeowners to choose an installer with complete confidence. Listed on www.quick-step.co.uk, Master Installers are reporting a constant stream of work and enhanced status from bearing the logo on vehicles and clothing. Feedback from customers has been exceptional too, with the quality of workmanship and level of customer service received from Master Installers cited as excellent. As a major part of the Ideal Home Show exhibition, the House Beautiful Multi-Generation Home came under close scrutiny from thousands of visitors so impeccable installation was a necessity to ensure Quick-Step’s reputation for quality is maintained. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

New Array of colours
Heckmondwike FB, is making it even easier for specifiers to create art in carpets by expanding its popular Array carpet tile range with six exciting new colours.
The six new colourways include Copper, Marble, Peacock, Violet, Emerald and Fuchsia, which brings the number of options within the Array range to 12. These colourways have been carefully selected to reflect current trends in furniture design and seating, which is set to enhance the appeal of Array for even more public and private sector commercial projects. Heckmondwike FB’s heavy contract Array carpet tiles feature a midwidth rib design, with a charcoal background enhanced with a subtle linear pattern. This stylish design co-ordinates perfectly with the company’s Broadrib carpet tiles in a complementary solid shade to provide a stunning effect and endless creative design possibilities. Heckmondwike FB’s Marketing Manager, Abby Chandler, explains: “We are really excited about these latest additions to the Array range. It is less than two years since Array was launched, yet it has become one of our most widely specified carpet ranges ever. The new colours were carefully selected to co-ordinate with current trends in furnishings for offices and other commercial environments, taking design in carpet tiles to a whole new level.” As part of Heckmondwike FB’s Creative Flooring range, Array represents the perfect opportunity for specifiers, designers and flooring contractors to create individual designs for a wide variety of commercial flooring applications. Being able to add this element of high design creates a fusion between the floor and furniture. Like all Heckmondwike’s products, Array carpet tiles can be cut onsite without the risk of fraying and this allows individual flooring designs to be created and installed with ease. Array carpet tiles are British-made and provide outstanding performance, as well as being backed by a 10 year limited wear warranty, which means they can be specified in complete confidence. In common with the rest of Heckmondwike FB’s collection, Array carpet tiles offer antistatic and anti-slip performance, excellent acoustic properties to help reduce noise levels, as well as offering excellent thermal performance. Oak on top
The engineered wood flooring from Parador, ‘French Oak mixed’ from the design collection New Classics Design Edition by Hadi Teherani came out on top at two international design awards. The engineered wood floor won the Interior Innovation Award and the iF product design award 2014. ‘French Oak mixed’ shows off a fascinating new interpretation of the classic herringbone installation pattern. Hadi Teherani has rethought the lively texture with its typical symmetry in a more playful way, changed the formats and worked with dark and light colours. This has resulted in plank modules that combine two block widths plus the two colours, oak natural and smoked oak and hence reveal an incomparable richness of geometry and colours. Installed in the space, these create exciting, dynamic flooring patterns, in which old traditions and new classics merge to form unique specimens. The Interior Innovation Award is presented by the German Design Council. Set up as a foundation in 1953 following a resolution by the German Bundestag, the German Design Council is dedicated to good design with its competitions, exhibitions, conferences, seminars and publications. The patrons of the German Design Council currently include 200 design-oriented companies that employ more than 1.8 million people in total.

Forbo’s Back to the Floor recycling scheme has lowered its collection threshold from two bulk bags to just one bag, giving greater flexibility on collections of installation off-cuts of its products. The new threshold of one bag – around 70m² of Forbo flooring off-cuts is needed to fill it – has been introduced in response to feedback and requests from participants in the scheme, which recycles Forbo’s clean installation off-cuts back into new flooring products.
Given that there is an estimated 10% wastage arising from each new flooring installation, each bag can hold enough off-cuts from a 700m² floor area. This calculation enables contractors to allow for sufficient bags to recycle off-cuts from any project – and especially helps those who could collect this amount over a number of smaller jobs. Back to the Floor Scheme Co-ordinator, Matt Charlton said: “By lowering the threshold to one bag, we are facilitating greater take-up of the Back to the Floor scheme across the flooring supply chain, especially for smaller installers and retail outlets. Volumes collected from smaller projects can all go together in one bag, contributing towards their overall sustainable goals.” Back to the Floor also collects and reprocesses smooth vinyl, cushioned vinyl flooring, plus Marmoleum and Flotex installation off-cuts for recycling back into new Forbo products. Excellent awareness
“Feedback to the floorwise aware initiative has been exceptionally positive,” says Richard Bailey, managing director, floorwise. “Retailers that have taken the time to find out more about the campaign have found that it offers many excellent incentives.”
Floorwise aware is built around a charitable donation to Breast Cancer Care for every roll of underlay sold, but the incentive has wider implications for retailers, with a more positive image for underlay and the store in which its sold. A first for the retail flooring industry, floorwise aware allows retailers to tap into the positive feeling that contributing to charitable causes gives, working as an excellent and silent sales tool. “The power of charitable products should not be underestimated,” continues Richard Bailey. “Consumers are warm to the idea of a product that gives to such a well recognised charity and so they naturally lean towards floorwise aware as the underlay they want for their home. Given that underlay has previously been something of a necessity purchase, based on affordability, this is a unique position for retailers to be in.” Yet the impact of floorwise aware does not stop on the shop floor, as the partnership with Breast Cancer Care provides new opportunities for retailers and staff to become involved in other positive activities. With events such as the Pink Ribbon Walk, the Ben Nevis Challenge and treks as extreme as Peru and Mount Killimanjaro, there are organised events for all abilities or retailers can organise their own fundraising activities. “Our initiative supports retailers that take an active approach to promotion particularly well, helping them to become involved with their local community in the positive light of fundraising or sponsorship, giving them fresh opportunity to work with the local press and with the support and guidance of Breast Cancer Care. This really is a great opportunity to make a positive change to the way underlay and the shop that sells it are viewed in the eyes of the buying public,” concludes Richard Bailey. T 01509 673974

Hope for child-friendly rug trade
Nina Smith, Executive Director of GoodWeave comments on the findings of the Harvard Report into Indian rug production which highlighted sub-human conditions and extensive child labour. The Harvard School of Public Health at Harvard University has recently issued a report into the widespread issue of child labour in the hand-made rug sector in India. Claiming to be the largest such investigation into slavery and child labour to date, the report documents over 3,200 total cases in nine states across Northern India, covers all modes of slave-like labour exploitation and estimates that up to 45% of the hand-made Indian rugs exported to the U.S. are likely to be made using forced labour and 20% by child labour. The same exporters sell into Europe, including the UK. The Harvard Study on Slavery and Child Labor in India’s Handmade Carpet Industry by Siddharth Kara looks in depth at the issues and provides detailed evidence. The summary highlights the plight of adult and child workers alike: “The working conditions uncovered were nothing short of sub-human…Physical and verbal violence against the workers was all too common”. It also reveals the emergence of a “new Carpet Belt” of child labour in Uttar Pradesh, entire Muslim villages held in debt bondage for rug weaving, numerous cases of children being sold into outright slavery near Patna, Bihar and extensive child labour in areas such as Bhadohi, Sawai Madhopur and Gangtok. Following the publication of the report, Nina Smith, Executive Director of GoodWeave, the non-profit organization founded in 1994 to end child labour in the rug industry and which is supported by leading rug designers and importers said: “The report provides even more stark details on the scope and severity of a problem that motivated our founding and has driven our work as an independent non-profit for 20 years. We agree with Mr. Kara’s recommendations for addressing the problem, and believe our independent certification and licensing process can be an important component of the solution he envisions, cutting across many of his recommendations. “In fact, GoodWeave’s certification is the only independent system that inspects all levels of the rug-making supply chain – from factory to all sub-contracted production. Behind GoodWeave's label is a holistic system for addressing labour exploitation, helping to create an environment in which viable alternatives exist to child labour and other forms of exploitation. GoodWeave community programs range from worker awareness and health programmes to education for children and creating entire “child-friendly” villages. “Thankfully, there is reason to be hopeful that these and other steps can make a meaningful difference. And we welcome the opportunity to work with even more retailers, importers and exporters to rid the carpet industry of child, forced and bonded labour once and for all.”
Up to 45% of the hand-made Indian rugs exported to the U.S. are likely to be made using forced labour and 20% by child labour.

Can wool win its fightback? Retailers respond to the new focus on natural fibre Retailers reckon consumers are less committed to wool and feel that synthetics are catching up with natural fibre in the price versus quality competition. But wool can still command a premium price and gain sales, they say.
Wool brands have ramped up their promotion in recent months and 88% of our readers who responded said the campaign was “long overdue”. 72% said they thought polypropylene was reducing the gap with wool in price versus quality and 76% said their attitude to selling synthetic was more positive than it was five years ago.
Worryingly for the wool people, 83% in our survey said consumers were less committed to natural fibre in recent years. 73% agreed with the suggestion that wool had lost some of its traditional market share against PP for good.
But the general situation is not so negative. Market share for wool with our retailers appears to have remained generally stable with just modest erosion – a third said they were selling about the same as five years ago, though 45% said they sold ‘a little less’.
And asked if consumers were still prepared to pay a premium for wool, half of our retailers said their customers would pay a little more and 37% were confident they would pay a lot more. “Quality wool will have three times the life span of PP. Does it cost three times as much? No!” said a retailer in East Anglia.
The latest campaign’s focus on cleanability was welcomed with 59% saying this issue was an obstacle to wool carpet sales though 40% disagreed. “Wool needs a catchline like polyprop has ‘bleach cleanable’”said a Scottish reader. 70% said they need more POS information to help inform consumers.
Hinting at some compromises when wool prices were high, a North Wales retailer said: “Wool is only really good and better than PP when the yarns are of a good, fine quality and the added blends are chosen for their performance and not to reduce costs.” Asked if buyers were bothered if wool was British or not, 35% said consumers supported home grown but 58% reported that their customers didn’t care about origin.
But an East Midlands retailer who rails against how dirty PP can get says consumers are turning away from “duff” synthetics. “I have lost good customers because we were too expensive, now they are flooding back. Long live British sheep and wool carpets!” he says.
The success of increased promotion will be measured in future sales. Asked if they expected to sell more wool in the year ahead, 28% predicted declining sales 36% expected stable sales, 30% expected a small increase and an optimistic 6% reckon they will sell a lot more.

Moth misery? Our survey prompted an unexpected response from retailers about the threat to wool sales from moths.
A London retailer said: “The main reason wool has lost ground are moths!” while another respondent in Essex said: “My biggest worry at this time for wool is that some well-established manufacturers are electing not to moth proof the product. We have already had some very serious infestations on nearly new products. It is essential that these manufacturers identify themselves to prevent the carpet retailer introducing a liability into the customer's home.”

Effective POS is essential in a crowded, competitive market so we’ve selected some of the best displays for retailers to help drive your business in 2014.

Positive POS is back in brisk business “There is a lot of choice out there and retailers can afford to be choosy”
There was a lull in the fight for your floor space during the recession as manufacturers reigned back on their investment in the big ticket items such as integrated wall stands.
But now, the battle is back on and suppliers set great value on securing as much of your retail space as they can to promote their products. There is a lot of choice out there and retailers can afford to be choosy.
Two tactics have emerged. Substantial, coherent display systems that work across a large section of the store to form a defined area versus the small modular units that retailers can move around for greatest effect. What works best depends on the store. Some choose to go for the designer, interiors look and a number of leading manufacturers have responded with the store-within-a-store concept for their brands. But this approach needs a large store if you are to represent all the leading brands that your customers want to see. Quality has been an issue and retailers are increasingly critical of systems that look good at first but are not built to last and show wear within the first year or so causing appearance and maintenance issues. But recent systems are more robust and reckon to last longer. Graphics embedded into samples have become a trend in wall displays with the increasing investment in top quality roomset photography. These presentations have a strong aspirational tone which appear to be popular with consumers. The initial rush of enthusiam for video on POS has subsided display designers have accepted that many retailers don’t remember to switch them on - or even get around to wiring them up! But one of the greatest improvements is in lighting with LED systems allowing more creative effects. The price of the technology has fallen quickly in the last year and the greater use provides retailers with reliable, safer lighting systems with very low maintenance.

Ten tips for top-selling stores 1.

5.
Ensure a large mix of standard and niche products to reassure consumers they have plenty to choose from – even if they ultimately go for something safe. Mix more expensive items with cheaper products so that the opportunity to trade up is always there – don’t place the high end products on their own or in an increasing price layout where they can be disregarded by customers. Use your window – too often this is a neglected area but a good display reassures consumers that you’re a smart retailer. Use your floor! Have the most popular of your higher margin products laid in sections of your floor. Consumers like to buy what they can see in a larger sample. Keep literature racks full – empty displays look tired and complacent and consumers like to have material to take away – and you can clip your business card to it.
Create different areas for different product types so that consumers are not confused by too much on offer in the same place. 7. Avoid an ‘industrial’ environment – too many stores are sheds with industrial roofs, lighting and ventilation on show. Use suspended ceilings, black paint and screens to hide the worst parts – the buying environment should be as domestic as possible. 8. Use soft furnishing, furniture items and flowers around the flooring displays to create a homely environment. 9. Avoid empty racks, dead bulbs and dark video screens. 10. Be careful about locating roll stock – very often it has a prominent position and lures consumers past the higher margin material. Consumers not only know it’s cheaper but the large area helps them visualise it in their own home which is more challenging with small samples.

Whitestone Weavers has devised a range of new POS displays for retailers this spring. Three tombolas representing the company’s core product areas for the year ahead are taking centre stage: The Twist Collection showcasing its best-selling Wool Twists; The Loop Collection housing its Wool Loops, including stripes; and The Hasslefree Collection complementing its increasingly popular bleach cleanable products. Soon-to-launch will also be the new on-trend Tartan Lectern displaying the company’s 30-strong Tartan and Plaid designs. Sales Director, Vince Holden says: “We have invested a lot in POS over the past twelve months, with all the stands being heavily subsidised. The good news is, the return on investment is excellent. Retailers are being bombarded more and more from manufacturers and distributors so we have to work hard to make sure that the stands are eyecatching, practical and our products offer excellent value.” To back up this offering The Whitestone Group now employs two full time merchandisers to install and update its growing number of displays. iSense and Sensuality – the naked truth! Seeing the sexy style of the promotion for the new super soft collection from Associated Weavers, you will not be surprised to know that sampling the Sensuality collection is best done naked! Persuading your customers to shed all their inhibitions is unlikely but AW would at least like to knock their socks off! Your customer’ toes are in for a treat if you can persuade them to walk barefoot on the new Sensuality collection. It has been the season for softness for much of the last year but AW always likes to take product development to a new level and the advanced technology behind their iSense polyamide yarn has made a remarkable difference to the touch of this carpet. “The launch of iSense is a game changer in the market for softness,” says AW MD Steve Elliott. “Retailers know how many consumers buy on how a carpet handles and on that basis, this collection is uniquely irresistible.” But the yarn is not such a soft touch where performance is concerned. Clever construction means that the fibre will recover faster from traffic wear than any comparable carpet. AW is one of the few companies who can print successfully on polyamide and their innovation is expressed across a 14 fashionable colours. There are six ranges in the Sensuality collection - deploying the iSense yarn across a range of price points and qualities. The top end has Seduction, a combination of softness and resilience and Serenity, the deep, indulgent luxury range. Splendour is a light frise yarn while L’Amour highlights a silky look and feel. Illusion and Adoration complete the line up with versatile carpets that can be installed throughout the house. All the Sensuality products come in 4 and 5m widths and with easy-fit backing Fusion Bac which is compatible with underfloor heating. Voice of the trade Richard Moore – Associated Carpet Group What’s the biggest single advantage of being in a buying group? The biggest advantage is that you can buy carpets from the main industry suppliers at preferential rates. If retailers support the main group suppliers then they will not only enhance their profitability and save money but importantly remain competitive.
How different are the various buying groups from one another? Buying Group aims are very similar however there are unique differences surrounding how the benefits are delivered to members and how their organisation is funded. Independent retailers are also different so it really is a case of which Group suits which retailer. Are retailers right to worry about losing their independence? No not at all as I believe this to be a real strength in our industry unlike any other market. Buying Groups and the support from their suppliers have played a significant part in why Independent retailers continue to flourish. Groups are well placed to support and help empower retailers to make the right decisions for their business.
Are you surprised how many retailers are not members of groups? Yes I am surprised. There are still a significant number of independent retailers who would benefit by being in a buying Group. For many I think historical and outdated perceptions get in the way of really exploring the opportunity. Overall, what proportion of the retail trade do you think should be members? My view is if you are a quality Independent Retailer who wants to support the affiliated Group suppliers then I would say all should be giving it careful consideration. The only thing that will make it difficult is when locations fill up.
Are there any types of flooring retailer that are not suitable for membership (e.g. too specialist, too small)? Joining a group is not really viable for a retailer who places his business through non group suppliers.
Is there a lack of understanding of how buying groups work generally in the flooring industry? Yes there is a lack of understanding of how buying groups work generally. In my experience after direct presentations to both retailers and suppliers they have a much clearer understanding of how our Group works. When retailers realise there are no catches and there is no interference in their business they become more positive.
Apart from the price discounts/margin advantages, what do you think retailers value most about buying groups. Retailers value that they are part of a fraternity of like minded retailers that all learn from each other. Our members are far better informed about the state of the market, current trends and this definitely empowers them to make informed decisions regarding their own business. 54 April 2014
“There are still a significant number of independent retailers who would benefit by being in a Buying Group” Do manufacturers regard buying groups as a force for good or a necessary evil? If, as a group you work positively in a pro-active partnership with suppliers, then it is definitely a force for good. At the end of the day we are all looking for mutual benefit but we cannot be complacent. Presently there is a positive culture with suppliers and Groups and this is why members need to continue to support them and their products. Can groups get in the way of long-established supplier relationships? Not in my experience. Long established supplier relationships do not need to alter in any way. At the end of the day we all look to grow our business together. Is buying group membership growing quickly enough? It is not a race as it is more important to attract quality Independent Retailers who really want to be supportive to both the Group and listed suppliers.
What I would like to see is a faster pace of enquiries from retailers who would really benefit from being part of a group but they don't actually know it yet. We are all keen to visit stores and put our respective business cases forward. The one quote that I always hear from new members is, "I wish I had done this years ago?"
Has the recession had an influence on membership? In many ways there have been many positive influences on membership as a reaction to the recession. Retailers have had to look much closer about the value of products and the escalating costs of running their business. Retailers have had to make important decisions and one of those is to ask if they look to join a Buying Group will it help save them money?
How important are own-label branding and exclusive ranges to retailers these days? De-branding and exclusive carpet ranges are essential strategies to help protect margins which are now under threat particularly from both home and internet sellers. With the invention of the internet and over accessibility of product it has made it more difficult especially if you offer high levels of service. Why is it worth a day away from the business to visit the Buying Group National Flooring Show? The BGNFS attracts over 60 leading brands which is a real draw for members. Certainly the feedback from visitors has been extremely positive inspiring new ideas for their businesses.

Flower on Flooring Keeping pace with installation deadlines As the economy continues to improve and flooring installations increase in number, the industry needs to look beyond traditional methods to increase its productivity. The ability to work faster without comprising quality is highly desirable for flooring contractors, allowing more installations to be completed. F Ball and Co says contractors are working to increasingly tight timescales and its main aim is to develop new products that meet these needs, through understanding how important fast-track solutions can be. Untreated damp can have costly consequences, but help is at hand following the release of two new waterproof surface membranes designed to manage moisture in any setting. The company states its Stopgap F77 is a one-coat epoxy resin waterproof surface membrane, effective up to RH levels as high as 98%, with a working time of 30 minutes and a curing time of approximately three hours. F Ball says its first two-coat water-based moisture protection system, Stopgap F78, is effective up to RH levels of 95% and can create a barrier against residual construction moisture in less than two hours.

Floorwise reports that its F592 Contact Spray Adhesive has become an indispensible addition to flooring installers’ toolboxes, due to its multi-tasking properties and convenient 500ml can. It deploys a spray of fast fixing adhesive with excellent bond strength, ideal for sticking firm carpet, carpet tiles, PVC skirting, fabrics, cork, paper, underlay, felts and much more. Capable of withstanding temperatures of up to 100ºC, it can be used with underfloor heating, over HVAC channels and on public transport vehicles and has also attained IMO certification. “With a high solids/low solvent ratio, F592 offers great coverage from its 500ml can while the formulation gives a great tack. With a directional nozzle, installers can also control the spray to create a neat and tidy finish every time,” says Floorwise. Further options are provided by Foxi & Graph International, well-known for its antislip underlays Foxi Super Plus and Stoprug. The company has extended its range to include solutions for temporary floors, stair protection and safety mats.
The Floorwise F592 Contract Spray is essential equipment for an installer’s toolbox
It states that the biggest innovative change in installation products is its Foxifix, which enables flooring to be installed without glue. It is suitable for use with carpet, PVC, bamboo and artificial grass, delivering sound insulation, increased comfort levels and allowing flooring to be easily removed, with no open time or need for repair.

Foxi & Graph says the product can be used in homes, offices, hotels and trade fairs and it will feature on its stand at the Harrogate Flooring Show in September. Jewel Blade offers its XL Premium Gold, manufactured at its Sheffield facility and featuring a titanium nitride TiN coating that provides additional durability. The company states this allows the blade to last up to eight times longer, depending on the application. The blades are best used in situations where reduced handling and downtime are required, says Jewel Blade, with the TiN coated blade providing longevity and allowing users to obtain more cuts per blade and enabling overall costs to be reduced.

Aspirational internet
Cavalier Carpets have announced the launch of their new aspirational website.
The blades were recently used to install linoleum and plywood in the new Christian Louboutin London store. The company states it received feedback that the blades “were incredible” and where the fitter would normally have broken 10 blades, he only blunted two. Packexe self adhesive plastic films are designed to provide low slip, waterproof, temporary protection for all flooring surfaces. Using Packexe Carpet or Packexe Hardfloor protects new flooring for longer, the company states, receiving high levels of customer satisfaction through helping to eliminate the risks of tripping and slipping commonly associated with dust sheets and loose plastic sheeting. “With ever evolving technology processes, the colour-coded branding reduces the risk of user error whilst maintaining product traceability, recognition and consistency. Each product is developed to grip the recommended surface securely and can be easily removed without leaving a sticky residue,” the company states.
Designed with a fresh modern feel which works on all media formats, with user-friendly navigation and updated with the latest information about their products and services. The new site allows both retailers and end users to try out the powerful collection search facility and view interactive pages promoting the benefits of both wool and polypropylene carpets. Sample cuttings can be ordered and delivered direct to the customer, whilst retailers can keep track of any specials which become available to help retailers achieve additional margin. There is also a new version of their 'Find a Retailer' facility which also includes links back to retailers own websites.
Packexe offers strong adhesive for use on carpets and rugs, medium adhesive for use on wood, laminate, tile and stone and is a state of the art application tool for all films, available in sizes of 625mm and 1250mm, the company concludes.
Hans Lowe, Retail Sales Director, says: “We hope that retailers will enjoy browsing our new site, finding more options and information each time, and that it will be yet another tool for strengthening our business relations.” T 01254 268 000 www.cavaliercarpets.co.uk

Forget solar panels, piezoelectric carpet pile could be the next big thing to cut household energy bills. New patented technology developed by the University of Bolton has the potential to use the impact of feet on flooring to generate electricity. It is believed that one square metre of carpet could generate five watts of energy – enough to charge one mobile phone, for example. Piezoelectricity is the electric charge that builds up in certain solid crystalline and ceramic structures – it is familiar as the ignition system for gas fires and hobs. Exposing the crystals to mechanical force causes an electrical charge. But for good measure, the new fibre also has photo-voltaic properties, generating electricity from sunlight as well. Professor Siores, who heads up research said: “We have developed the fibre because renewable energy sources such as sunlight, wind and rain are not always available at the same time in the same location. Our hybrid material has combined flexible photovoltaic materials, which harness solar energy, with flexible piezoelectric fibres that generate power through movement.” Recently the work of the university in pioneering the use of energy harvesting fibres into everyday textiles was published by the Royal Society of Chemistry in the journal, Energy and Environmental Science (EES). Dr Navneet Soin, co-author of the paper said: “We believe that this is just the first step in the creation of true wearable energy harvesting structures which do not look and feel any different from the conventional fibres and yet provide the highest level of functionality.” April 2014 57

Beautiful beasties Brintons Carpets have joined forces with Timorous Beasties, the award winning Glaswegian design house, to create a beautiful and dramatic range of broadloom carpets.
The road to Wigan PUR High clarity Polysafe Modena PUR was the safety flooring of choice for the eagerly anticipated Wigan Youth Zone in Lancashire.
Noted for their surreal and provocative textiles and wallpapers, Timorous Beasties challenge traditional conventions with their use of heavily illustrative insects, plants, birds and butterflies, wood grain and leaves. Inspired by popular Timorous Beasties designs, the collection is a mixture of large scale elegant designs. The designs in this collection work with a larger scale and the avoidance of symmetry, favouring balance through composition to create a more individual interior. From the dense use of solid geometric texture and floral shapes of Linen Damask to the gentle meandering sprawl of the Ruskin Butterfly, with its delicate organic background texture.
Wigan Youth Zone is the UK’s largest youth club and opened after the combined efforts of businessmen Martin and Bill Ainscough, Dave Whelan and Wigan Council. The youth centre offers a diverse range of facilities to local young people including a gym, sports hall, climbing wall and dance studio. Over 600m2 of Polysafe Modena’s vivid Citrina, Garnet and Angelite colourways were installed by iFloor (UK) Ltd of Liverpool. They were designed to create zonal areas within the main entrance hall, providing a colourful centrepiece and safe welcome to the local community. The youth zone’s General Manager John Harker comments, “Wigan Youth Zone caters for hundreds of young people on a daily basis. It was essential that the flooring chosen was able to cope with the high footfall, offered sustainable slip resistance but also added to the vibrancy and energy of the centre. Polysafe Modena ticked all the boxes”.
The Grain du Bois creates a free flowing weighted pattern, developed from drawings of wood grains, where the colours can blend or contrast with each other depending on where your view point is in the room. Botanical, plays with large scale floral motifs broken up by a look of transparency, a layered effect derived from ways of over printing with hand screens to build up a more complex image from a simple design. Atholl Gardens, is the combining of birds perching on a garden gate, where natural blends with ornate manmade, creating a more interesting silhouette.
Polysafe Modena PUR offers sustainable wet slip resistance for the guaranteed life of the product and conforms fully with HSE and UK Slip Group Guidelines, achieving 36+ on the Pendulum wet test with a surface roughness of 20 microns and above. Featuring a range of 14 high clarity micro-granite designs, Modena presents an attractive yet safe floor finish. The particles embedded within the product are virtually invisible to the naked eye and create a rougher, harder friction surface to ‘bite’ into the sole of footwear, ensuring the necessary long term slip resistance is achieved.
This latest collection of designs is a bold statement of design intent and adds to Brintons and Timorous Beasties’ previous collaborations. The Timorous Beasties by Brintons Carpet Collection, consists of 5 designs in 12 colour ways and launches this April.

The British Wool column Wool winners in Homes & Gardens feature The April edition of Homes & Gardens, the interiors publication that appeals to the design minded consumer, features a seven page feature on wool for interiors. The feature follows on from the ‘Design a Wool Room’ competition which featured in the October issue as part of the Campaign for Wool’s Wool Week promotions.
The three winners, a professional interior designer, a student interior designer and a design enthusiast all won the chance to see their ideas for a wool room created by the design team at Homes & Gardens for a magazine photo shoot. A great opportunity and promotional platform that brings concept ideas to life in a way that the consumer can relate to.
The three highly different designs showed great creativity and put fibre under an amazing spotlight of some120,000 readers. The feature was intended to be a tribute to the stunning ‘Wool House’ showcase which was held last year in March 2013 at Somerset House, London.
“We had superb support from Homes & Gardens for Wool House and they felt this feature was a great way of building on the evident consumer interest in all things wool and the outstanding spread looks truly stunning.

ONEWOOL continues to show great product
The amazing capacity of the wool industry to produce beautiful wool ranges for carpets and rugs is a real testimony to the creative potential of the fibre and the skills of the trade. In recent months, wool designers and manufacturers have nominated numerous special products to celebrate as part of the ONEWOOL promotion - a Campaign for Wool platform that celebrates the beauty and diversity of real wool for interiors. Cheviot wool - a highly resilient British wool, has been a great example of this - grown on the breed that originates from the tough terrain in the Northern part of England that stretches up to the Scottish borders, this is a strong and robust British wool, it can resist footfall and take a lot of daily wear and tear. from The Stocklists
Kingsmead Carpets chooses Highland breeds
‘Glenshee’ the new flagship product from Kingsmead Carpets is also a ONEWOOL nominated product and for obvious reasons. It features a new exciting blend of wool called "Highland Fleece", sourced exclusively from Scottish farms and blends wool from a variety of breeds of Scottish sheep to maximise the resilience and appearance retention of the fibre. Due to its specific sourcing, the wool within Glenshee qualifies for platinum certification from the British Wool Marketing Board and it is the first mainstream carpet to be launched carrying that accolade. “British Wool is a really outstanding fibre on the floor, bulky and tough enough to withstand heavy duty wear but still soft and with great comfort,” Tim Booth, marketing manager of BWMB said. Please look at the ww.campaignforwool.org and www.britishwool.org to see the up to date ONEWOOL nominations - the fabulous ONEWOOL online gallery is coming Kingsmead chooses Highland breeds soon.
Roger Oates chooses Cheviot wool
The British Cheviot Wool Collection - the new Roger Oates flatweave flooring collection is their first in British Cheviot wool. Through experimentation and development in collaboration with wool merchants and yarn spinners, a Cheviot wool blend yarn was specially spun. The yarn not only provides a good spring, which is invaluable to high quality textiles, particularly floor coverings that are in daily use but also allows clear bright colours to sing through. Classic border and herringbone designs from the Roger Oates’ archives have been updated and pared-back for this collection, focusing on the introduction of pure tones of red, blue, orange, green and grey. The result is really fresh, young and timeless and all from a British Wool that has been around for generations. Northern breeds of British sheep which endure inclement weather often have additional strength and certainly the natural bulk is a great benefit for the home. Providing much needed wear and appearance retention over many years. So a Roger Oates chooses Cheviot wool great investment!

Vinyl victorious! Recofloor members celebrated their considerable vinyl flooring recycling achievements at the scheme’s third annual 2014 Awards event in March. Flooring companies, contractors and distributors, who have collected nearly 1,700 tonnes of vinyl flooring since the UK take-back scheme’s inception in 2009, received their trophies and certificates from guest host and BBC Sport’s football pundit Mark Lawrenson. Held at Aston Villa Football Club in Birmingham, the event rewards members' commitment and is highly valued by the flooring supply chain. 2014 saw competition more intense than ever before! Recofloor is the UK’s award-winning national vinyl flooring recycling scheme, founded by leading flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor, to divert vinyl flooring waste from landfill. Material is collected, irrespective of who manufactured it, which benefits the environment and significantly reduces collectors’ waste disposal costs. Smooth and safety flooring off-cuts are recycled back into new products, such as flooring, with smooth uplifted flooring being recycled back into traffic calming products such as cones and sign bases. Both directors, John Patsavellas of Altro and John Whitesmith of Polyflor, praised the continued efforts of the scheme’s 525-plus collectors, saying: “The quality of the nominees was outstanding and testament to the success of the scheme. Everyone can be proud of what they have achieved.” Based mainly on last year’s achievements, the Recofloor Awards also recognise those collectors who have made significant contributions to the scheme in various ways. A total of 30 firms received Gold and Silver Awards, calculated by the tonnage collected in relation to the average number of fitters a company employs. T 0161 355 7618

Kährs has launched its new Capital Collection of wood floors. In contrast to the popular rustic look, the six new designs reflect an alternate and growing trend for even grained finishes. Each floor is crafted in Sweden from sustainable European oak and features a wide-board one-strip format. A combination of handcrafted finishing treatments, including brushing and bevelled edges, define the look and reinforce the tactile appearance.
All of the new floors are defined by their clean timber grade and minimal colour variation. Kährs Oak Dublin has a natural, light honey tone and is offered with a satin lacquer, matt lacquer or oil prefinish. White-toned Oak Paris has a luminous appearance and a matt lacquer or oil prefinish, whilst Oak Berlin has a subtle grey oiled finish. Each of the six new wood floors measures 187mm wide by up to 2420mm long. Kährs’ multi-layered construction uses hardwood down to the glueless Woodloc joint only, with a combination of fast-growing spruce, pine and poplar below. As well as providing eco-benefits, Kährs award-winning construction method provides greater stability and enables the floor to be installed over underfloor heating. T 023 9245 3045

£900k investment keeps Cormar at the cutting edge Cormar Carpets is expanding its Ramsbottom-based Holme Mill site in a move to further improve stock availability and service to customers.
Representing a £900,000 investment, work is now underway on the new warehousing space, designed to keep the company at the cutting edge of customers’ needs. The base foundations have already been laid with several hundred vehicles of coarse stone delivered to site. The new extension, which significantly expands the un-backed carpet storage area, is expected to be completed in June. Said Paul Murphy, Cormar Carpet’s production manager: “The extension allows us the opportunity to grow the business and increase our warehouse capacity for un-backed carpet. It is a critical development that will free up process time at both sites and enable implementation of our plans to deliver the growth and performance enhancements not previously possible due to space constraints.” All Cormar ranges are manufactured in the UK on site at its Lancashire mills and distributed throughout Britain and Ireland via its own delivery fleet. Ulster’s proud anniversary
2014 marks a landmark year for Ulster Carpets as they celebrate 75 years in business.
The company recently hosted a glittering Gala Dinner at the Armagh City Hotel, to pay a special thanks to all who have contributed to Ulster Carpets’ success. The 550 guests included shareholders, employees past and present, local dignitaries and representatives from the many organisations and charities the company supports. Ulster Carpet was founded by George Walter Wilson in a bid to boost employment in the local area. Since then Ulster Carpets have been dedicated to quality, service and the pursuit of excellence. Generations of skilled employees have worked to ensure only the highest quality carpets bear the Ulster name. To achieve this, Ulster Carpets’ control all aspects of manufacturing within the UK; from the buying and processing of wool at Ulster Yarns (Dewsbury), through to dyeing and weaving at the original County Armagh site. This fastidious approach to quality and a commitment to innovation have secured Ulster Carpets’ market leading position in both the residential and contract markets, with Ulster carpet gracing the floors of the most discerning customers around the world.
Carpet shrugs off food bugs!
If you apply the ‘5-second rule’ to fallen food, then carpet is the flooring of choice to eat your dinner off! Lots of people talk about the 3 or 5-second rule to salvage something edible that they’ve dropped without any practical awareness of whether it’s really hygenic. A team of microbiologists has now put this theory to the test to prove once and for all whether this rule does apply - and whether different types of floor and food make a difference. Surprisingly, the researchers found bacteria is least likely to transfer onto food from carpeted surfaces, and moist foods, such as pasta and sweets, are the most likely to follow the five-second rule.
Tiled and laminate flooring are the worst surface types for transferring bacteria to food.
T 028 3833 4433 www.ulstercarpets.com
The research was carried out by final year Biology students from Aston University, led by Professor Anthony C. Hilton. They monitored the transfer of common bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli), as well as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) from indoor floors including carpet, laminate and tiled surfaces. The food included toast, pasta, biscuits and sticky sweets and they were timed from three to 30 seconds.

from The Stocklists
The findings confirmed that time is significant in the transfer of bacteria from a floor surface to a piece of food, but the type of flooring is the deciding factor. Carpeted surfaces were least likely to transfer bacteria, over any period of time - and this was the case for all four food types. Professor Hilton said: “Despite a general consensus that the ‘rule’ is purely a myth, we have found evidence that transfer from indoor flooring surfaces is incredibly poor with carpet actually posing the lowest risk of bacterial transfer onto dropped food.” April 2014 61
