Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE The WOOLSAFE Mark has gone Green! The WOOLSAFE Organisation has teamed up with ecolabelling authorities Green Seal and EcoLogo in North America, to enable those WOOLSAFE approved products that are ecologically responsible to be recognised and promoted as such.
The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.
Regular Maintenance
Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres.
Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.
Periodic Cleaning
When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company.
If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approved products. Look for this mark on the bottle or package: WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.
General Rules for Spot Removal • Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet roll or clean cloth
• Scoop up or scrape off solids
• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment – if unsure, use solvent first • Always work from the edge of the spot inwards • BLOT, do NOT rub
• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; work into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge
• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed carpet tiles • When using solvents always ensure there is plenty of fresh air ventilation • Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters with clean water • Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats
The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves. Protective treatments Many carpets come with a protective fibre treatment to reduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and will eventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regular cleaning is still required.
Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturer can be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearest WOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit our website: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDER section.)
Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers!

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size.Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.
A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc).To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match.
For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
SAMPLES
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.
SHEDDING
The original carpet tile
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
PULLED LOOPS
This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.
8
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
• shedding • pulled loops
SPROUTING
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
SHADING
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
STATIC
Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc).
The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.
FADING ON WOOL
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.
Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair.Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.
A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
THE STOCKLISTS August 2010
• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling
PILE REVERSAL (SEE SHADING)
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’.This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
INDENTATIONS
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.
The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
FLATTENING
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
SOILING
Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave
sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.
T HE R EGENCY
Collection
It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.
Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.
WOVEN
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.
Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.
Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.
Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is BONDED Tip Sheared Level Loop Tip Sheared Level Loop Sheared Level Loop plain colours. a versatile, textured finish that is idealTipfor Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have not stitched into the backing in any way. Flooring factsheet Wool fibre THE BEST CARPET WOOL
Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home. THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET
Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
SAFE
DURABLE
Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency.
Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer. Safety Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason.
Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.
Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.
Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Why join? Associated Carpet Group www.smartercarpets.co.uk Contact: Richard Moore Tel: 01942 271315 richardmoore@tiscali.co.uk

Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains.
More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group.
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

• Ensure you understand any rules that may limit your flexibility to run your business the way you want.

Key benefits
Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Increase sales • ‘Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with point-of-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.
Access professional services • Business services • Financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts.
Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings • Regional workshops • Supplier presentations • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Featured buying group this month: Flooring One You are the boss and it’s your business. At Flooring One we understand that your business is your biggest asset and we’re certainly not going to change this, only offer advice and services to help you improve. We want you to feel that, everyday, and every time you need help with your business, you are amongst friends exchanging information and an interchange of ideas and business practices. AIS/Flooring One has a name and reputation in the flooring industry for over 30 years that is envied by many. A subsidiary of Associated Independent Stores (AIS), the largest voluntary non-food central buying/marketing organisation in the UK, Flooring One offers a compendium of services from which it’s members can pick and choose to meet their individual needs.
The Flooring Show, held annually in Solihull, is a key event, offering members a valuable opportunity to meet each other, leading manufacturers, ancillary suppliers and of course, the entire Flooring One team.
Maximum buying power, increased profits. Our collective buying power means that major flooring manufacturers are attracted to do business with our members and on some of the best cost price and settlement terms available, often with annual rebates. (Our top member earnt over £70k in rebates in 2009). Our centralised payment of accounts system guarantees regular payments to suppliers and your administration is greatly reduced. Our experienced in-house team also source exclusive products and develop own label ranges to display alongside manufacturer’s brands, precluding direct price comparison and consequential profit reductions. What’s more, our merchandising team are constantly in the field supporting your business and the superb display stands available from Flooring One.
Marketing support. It’s not easy for an independent retailer to match the sheer marketing power of a national retail network. That’s why Flooring One developed an annual Member’s Marketing manual. Containing everything from an image library, templates and headlines, to complete colour advertisements for seasonal campaigns. The manual comes with easy to follow instructions and CD’s allowing members to create their own individual yet highly professional campaigns.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale - with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.floorwise.co.uk
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results - some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.
Benefits
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards
How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber
Crumb
Combination
PU foam
www.numa-online.co.uk
Types
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired

Choose from a great
Designer Collection
The new collection of high quality, designer-inspired carpets builds on Brockway’s established reputation as a manufacturer of quality and includes new ranges inspired by nature, culture, fashion and architecture. Using two or three ply yarns for longlasting good looks, the Designer Collection marries the best of traditional British craftsmanship with striking colours and textures. They’re carpets intended to ‘stand out from the crowd’ ‘The Collection’ comprises eight brand new contemporary ranges together with the established Vogue carpet and is aimed at design- and fashion-conscious consumers.
Brockway is supporting the Designer Collection with a stunning new brochure, redesigned website and brand new point of sale lecterns, created to make a real impact in showrooms.
The new collection comes hot on the heels of a re-branding of the company, with the introduction of a sharper, more contemporary look for the famous ‘Brockway badger’ and an updating of the company’s website, marketing materials, stationery, vehicle livery and signage.
The initial August launch distribution of our Designer Collection display units will be strategically managed by respective Brockway sales representatives, who will be approaching customers judged most strongly suited to promoting and selling premium quality, design led floorcoverings.
The Designer Collection plays heavily on Brockway’s British heritage and the fact that its carpets are created and manufactured in Kidderminster.

THE STOCKLISTS August 2010
IT’S OUR 25TH! This September we are celebrating 25 years since Telenzo became a UK limited company – which we think is a milestone worth marking!
Chamonix from the Alpine collection is irresistible indulgent but at a surprisingly competitive price
Says Lesley Inman, our UK operations manager: “Knowing we are long established as a UK company, contributing to the UK economy, employing local people in an area which as over the past 25 years seen so many traditional employers disappear, means a lot to us. But, more importantly we are looking forward, working hard to help our customers through these current tough times with vigour and enthusiasm and hopefully the right sort of products at the right sort of prices!”
MORE HELLOS – AND GOODBYES This month we say hello to several more new faces – and goodbye to our agent in the south west for many years, Doug Gilmour, whom we wish a long and happy retirement. In his place, we welcome Brendan Hart who will cover Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset; and Andrew Jefferies, who will take over Bristol, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire from Doug and will also cover South Wales while Paul Brewer will concentrate on the West Midlands and his existing wholesale customers in South Wales. We are also delighted to welcome Rebecca Gibbons, who joins us to cover the north east. Meanwhile, our new agent in Lancashire, John Rostron, will also be covering Cumbria and the Isle of Man. “Retirements in companies like ours often come in waves and this is one of those moments for Edel Telenzo,” says UK sales manager Gary Prophet. “We’re very sad to see some of our old team go but equally delighted at the calibre and enthusiasm of our new faces. With the changes in personnel have also come some alterations to our areas. The end result should be a considerable strengthening of our nationwide coverage to both our benefit and our customers’!” We look forward to an exciting relationship with our new team members – and you – in the future!
COUNTDOWN TO HARROGATE See us on stand C25 Anticipation is building here at Edel Telenzo, with just a few weeks to go to the Harrogate Flooring Show. It will be the first exhibition together for our new sales team and we know they’re raring to go and to meet you all there. Our portfolio of new products has, we think, really strengthened our range on all fronts – from domestic to contract, wool to synthetics, luxury to budget ranges, we’ve got it covered. And we’re proud of our reputation for quality and value. Plus of course, as we will be celebrating our 25th anniversary, there’s ever more reason to come and see us and join us for a glass of something bubbly!
ANOTHER OPENING We’ve a few more changes yet to make to the team! We are now looking for an experienced agent for Hampshire, Oxon, Bucks, West Sussex and Berkshire. The right candidate will be a highly self-motivated individual, who enjoys working with products and customers of the highest quality, with a sound knowledge of the carpet industry as well as the customer base in these areas. Applications to Gary Prophet at the address below.
ONLY WHILE STOCKS LAST Don’t forget – if you need or want any of our Rembrandt quality in 5 metre width, we are in the process of phasing this option out so it will only be available for a limited amount of time now, while stock lasts.

We tick all the boxes!
Best-selling products at every price point As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality - a partnership that retailers can rely on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will respond to.
Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across three depots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicated fleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usually within 24 hours.
A long-term programme of substantial investment has created a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully on line.
Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio of products matched to the diverse needs of different customer groups, rooms styles and performance requirements. Regency’s stain-resistant ranges use their own ‘Carefree’ fibre which is bleach cleanable and offered with a warranty for absolute confidence. New ranges are introduced several times a year to keep the offering fresh and interesting and respond to consumer trends and colour shifts.
As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors – stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and many others.
the aim is simply to offer customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality
Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing also means they can manage stock more closely and respond to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready for dispatch.
Furlong have paid particular attention to the presentation of the product range to consumers with a market-leading modular POS system which they will deliver and design to suit your store.
Furlong’s wholly-owned manufacturing company, Regency Carpets, is one of the UK’s top three tufters with a modern plant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland.
Furlong believes in working in partnership with their customers to provide products and services that ticks all the boxes.

FlooringNews Axminster ads to profile Axminster Carpets has announced the undertaking of a consumerfocused display advertising campaign that will see it target some eight million interested readers over a three-month period. With display adverts in 10 of the leading home interest titles, the campaign will run in September, October and November with the aim to promote the diversity of the Axminster Carpets portfolio and drive traffic to retailers through its new website.
Full-page advertisements will appear every month throughout the campaign in the following titles; ‘BBC Homes and Antiques’, ‘Country Homes & Interiors’, ‘Country Life’, ‘Country Living’, ‘Homes and Gardens’, ‘House and Garden’, ‘House Beautiful’, ‘Living Etc’, ‘Period Ideas’ and ‘Period Living’.
Combined, these magazines have a circulation of almost one million, which equates to a readership of over two and a half million each month.
Richard Lawrence, Group Head of Marketing, commented: “Some consumers still view Axminster Carpets as a high quality manufacturer of mainly bold patterned carpets. Our key aim is to stress to the consumer that we do produce the best in quality, but equally that it is available in many different carpet styles. Whether traditional pattern, contemporary pattern, textured or plain, we offer a comprehensive collection that appeals to all ages.
Tall story Tarkett, a world leader in general and sports flooring solutions, has signed a licence agreement with the Australian company ‘Style’, owner of patented technology regarding the use of natural fibres. Under this agreement,Tarkett will produce a new generation of parquet flooring made from eucalyptus wood – the first of its kind on the market. This is a responsible and environmentally friendly product, developed with a view to preserving natural resources and using renewable materials. It is primarily intended for commercial use, and will be available in late 2010.
“Along with the product and brand awareness benefits we will gain from this initiative, we are keen that this campaign drives customers to Axminster Carpet’s retailers so the overall benefits are felt by many.
“Our consistent editorial coverage in consumer titles over the years has helped broaden awareness of our product diversity, but now this advertising campaign will take our promotional activity to the next level, further delivering our message of Natural, British, Beautiful.” T 01297 630650 www.axminstercarpets.co.uk.
Using a unique, patented production process,Tarkett will produce an ecological eucalyptus flooring that will be three times harder than its oak equivalent. Eucalyptus Grandis is one of the most common tree species in Asia, Europe and Australia. It is also a very fast-growing tree, reaching maturity and becoming harvestable in only 8 to 10 years, as opposed to almost 100 years for an oak tree. All the wood used comes from forests certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Pan European Forest Certification). The production method and wood types used ensure flooring products that are highly wear resistant and extremely stable in all climatic conditions and at any ambient temperature.
“This innovation complies with our approach to sustainable development. It also allows us to develop a new commercial wood offering for collective customers, with a very attractive, warming and hard-wearing product”, said Patrick Mathieu,Tarkett President Western Europe. T 01622 854040

The Carpet Foundation in Focus
Carpet in the media in the Autumn The Carpet Foundation will be active in the home interest press with their Autumn promotional activity.
The £125,000 burst will see 34 insertions in 13 of the leading home interest titles that are bought by 1.3 million consumers every month. 66 per cent of the insertions are in premium cover positions, illustrating the quality of the new advertising campaign and the Foundation’s unique relationship with the media. All four images will be used in the Autumn burst.
Alongside the advertising, several magazines are running carpet features so do look out for the October editions, on sale from 1 September, of Country Homes & Interiors, Period Living, BBC Homes & Antiques and House Beautiful.
Launch of Wool Rich Quality Mark
To coincide with the Campaign for Wool, the Carpet Foundation is taking the opportunity to repackage and reintroduce its Quality Mark as the Wool Rich Quality Mark. 99% of all products produced by Carpet Foundation manufacturers are wool rich so it is a logical move.
As before, overall suitability is assessed using an objective product testing regime based upon British and international standards. To mark the launch, surface branding devices will be made for all Carpet Foundation products.
IT’S OFFICIAL – OUR MEMBERS’ CUSTOMERS ARE VERY SATISFIED
Independent research among 855 consumers who had bought carpet in the last 12 months carried out on behalf of the Office of Fair Trading has shown that customers of Carpet Foundation members were more satisfied than customers of businesses who were not.
The Campaign for Wool
HRH Prince Charles is spearheading a 5 year campaign to reignite the UK’s interest in and appreciation of wool. Although the carpet industry is the single biggest user of wool with 70% of all wool produced in the UK going into carpet, the campaign embraces all appropriate sectors, including clothing, fashion, bedding, upholstery, interior textiles and building and insulation materials. Pleasingly, it is being supported by all the major high street chains including John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, Aquascutum, Burberry, Jaeger,Top Shop and Hacketts.
The campaign kicks off with Wool Week which runs from 11 – 17th October – and there will be alot of noise around it with some high profile ‘stunts’ and celebrity endorsements. For the carpet industry, point of sale to use in store and on products is being produced and will be available shortly. On the high street, there will be a major POS campaign highlighting the 10 reasons to buy wool. In addition, research is being undertaken into consumer attitudes to wool. Carpet Foundation chief executive Mike Hardiman is on the campaign steering group and has played a major role in getting the project off the ground. He commented: “It is a sad truth that the price farmers are getting for their wool is less than the actual physical cost of shearing it. Sheep numbers have fallen by 15% in the UK in the last three years and now wool-less sheep are being genetically bred. Improving consumer perceptions of wool rich carpet is essential for the continuity of supply of wool. It is a staggering fact that if only 1.5% of consumers who currently buy a synthetic carpet were to switch to wool, it would boost demand for wool by 2.8 million kilos. “
T 01562 755568 38 August 2010
www.carpetfoundation.com
The research, covering 382 consumers of Carpet Foundation members and 473 consumers who had used ‘other’ retailers, found that: 64% of consumers were ‘very satisfied’ with how the product was sold to them by a Carpet Foundation member compared with 47 per cent for non-member companies. Members’ customers also had greater confidence that they had been fairly treated than non-member customers. Consumers purchasing from a CF member were more likely to receive written information or verbal advice on the following areas than consumers at other retailers: • Fitting/installation • Suitability of the carpet • Range of carpets available
79% v 62% 75% v 55% 62% v 46%
54% of Carpet Foundation member consumers would spontaneously recommend their retailer as opposed to 31% of those who had used other retailers. 75% of Carpet Foundation member consumers would use their retailer again compared with 57% in the case of others. Commenting on the findings, Carpet Foundation chief executive Mike Hardiman said: “The results, from what is a robust sample, confirm what we have long known – that Carpet Foundation members give unrivalled levels of service. As well as higher satisfaction levels, Carpet Foundation customers are more likely to recommend retailers to others; more likely to use them in the future and are less likely to select on the basis of price alone.”

The Wool Benefits Series from Wools of New Zealand
Easy Wool New Zealand wool’s superior quality enables extensive design, colour and pattern flexibility, while wool’s natural ability to shrug off dirt and spring back into shape after crushing ensures long-lasting good looks to complement and enhance any room setting.
Good Looks that Last
Wool fibres have a unique and complex combination of properties that make them the ideal carpet fibre. When it comes to ease of maintenance, wool carpets are exceptional – as you would expect from a natural fibre. Each wool fibre has a scaly outer structure that holds soil high on the pile where it can be easily vacuumed. It also has a protective membrane, the epicuticle, which helps prevent wet spills from penetrating the fibre. A simple maintenance programme will keep your wool carpet as good as the day it was installed.
No Need for Protective Finishes
The soil resistance and cleanability, both wet and dry, are characteristics inherent in the wool fibre and are not achieved by chemical treatments. This means that additional application of anti-soil agents is unnecessary. Due to the limited durability of many of these finishes, they can even cause problems with differential soiling and spot removal when partly worn.
Regular vacuuming is an easy and effective way to remove soil and dirt particles before they become embedded into the pile of the carpet. When it comes to spots and stains, speed is of the essence. But there is no need to panic: simply blot up liquid spills or scoop up solids and treat the spot with a suitable agent recommended for wool carpets.
Periodic deep cleaning carried out by a professional cleaning company will remove the deepest soil, restoring the beauty and ensuring the long life of the carpet.
Wools of New Zealand Brand The coveted Wools of New Zealand brand is your assurance of quality – you can relax in the knowledge that products carrying the brand meet the highest standards. There are a number of specific requirements which have to be met before a product can qualify; it signifies much more than just the use of New Zealand wool.
Only licensed Wools of New Zealand partners are entitled to apply the brand, and products are subjected to a series of rigorous tests for performance and quality. The minimum wool content must be 80% of which 60% must be New Zealand wool. Wool carpets represent an excellent investment – they retain their looks for longer and tend to be kept for longer, making them an economical décor proposition in the long term.

Flower on Flooring The sticky stuff
by Dennis Flower Easy Lock from Eletile - the range consists of six attractive wood finishes
Regardless of whether flooring retailers are seeking to boost add-on sales or create another opportunity for increased contact with consumers, adhesives can prove to be a highly useful addition to the in-store offering.
Providing timely advice to customers choosing to lay their flooring product themselves can also pay dividends in the form of customer loyalty, with consumers returning to the store they have most confidence in to source their next floor covering. Examples of the wide range of adhesives available in the UK include F. Ball's long-established Styccobond F3, which continues to prove popular with professional carpet installers, the company states. 'Since its original formulation, the famous ‘yellow bucket’ has become synonymous with quality and has paved the way for the development of F. Ball’s now extensive Styccobond range, which offers specialist adhesives for virtually every type of floorcovering and challenge encountered on-site,' says the company.
Styccobond F3 is a water-based rubber/resin adhesive, designed to offer high levels of 'wet grab' and an early build up of strength, making it ideal for securing textile floorcoverings in a broad range of flooring applications. It is also compatible for use with over 70 per cent of the F. Ball Styccobond F3 - application floorcoverings listed in the company's Recommended Adhesives Guide (RAG), including most under floor heating systems. With over 5,500 adhesive recommendations from over 200 manufacturers, F. Ball states it uses meticulous testing with all floor coverings to create the guide. An interactive version of its RAG is available on the company's website. Richard Bailey, Floorwise Group managing director, said: 'For the retailer that is comfortable with customers that insist on installing the floor themselves, then our range of spray adhesives make a great choice. Easy to use and cost-effective, these adhesives are great for homeowners willing to take on the tricky task of installing flooring.' While the company's F599 remains a favourite with contractors due to its extended coverage and stronger bond properties, he continued, homeowners can

also benefit from the F592 contact spray adhesive. This has been formulated to bond carpets, most vinyl floorcoverings, PVC skirtings, fabrics, paper, underlay, felts and much more. 'As always, we recommend that floor coverings are installed by professionals,' Bailey continued. 'But for those homeowners willing to give it a try for themselves then spray adhesives are the ideal solution. Just make sure you remind them that the floor should really be installed by your fitters!' Mapei states that significant continuous investment in research and development has allowed it to develop technologically advanced adhesives with a strong emphasis on safeguarding the environment and the health of the installer. It highlights its eco line of adhesives, solvent-free with low VOC emissions, designed to combine effectiveness, ease of use and end user safety. The re-branded Ultrabond Eco range consists of 170 for carpet installation, 380 for vinyl and PVC (with extended open time), 520 for linoleum,VS90 for use where a high temperature adhesive is needed (conservatories, etc), Fix Pressure Sensitive adhesive and Ultrabond Eco Tack for the installation of carpet tiles. These are further complemented by Mapei screeds, levelling compounds, primers, surface membranes and sealants, the company states.
Adhesive alternative Eletile states that it has created its Easy Lock and eleEase range of luxury flooring for those looking for an alternative to the use of adhesive. The company reports that its floating floor system halves the cost of installation and reduces the time taken by up to 75% because there are no screeds or adhesives involved. Easy Lock is a floating vinyl plank system designed to require minimal sub floor preparation, making it suitable for different environments. To secure into place, each plank has a key shaped edge which simply slots into position and links it to the board laid before it, known as a Unilin locking system. eleEase was the first to offer Stick Strip technology in the UK, says Eletile, and offers luxury vinyl tile and plank (LVT) products that are 100% recyclable. At the end of its use, the product can be uplifted, granulated and bagged, ready to be reproduced into a new product. eleEase is available in both domestic and contract ranges.

Non-slip on ‘icy’ surface Visitors to Cheshire Farm Ice Cream can now enjoy the selection of over 30 award-winning dairy ice creams and sorbets in comfort and safety following a recent refurbishment of the Farm’s ice cream parlour.Tarkett’s Safetred Spectrum safety tiles were specified for the flooring in order to provide safety underfoot with a hard-wearing, attractive finish.
Jonathan Fell, Director at the Ice Cream Farm explained: “We needed safety flooring for the ice cream parlour, but we also wanted to incorporate a design element. When the flooring contractor showed us Tarkett’s safety tiles, we were delighted as it provided the necessary safety element but still allowed us to create a pattern in the flooring, and the finished result looks brilliant.” Flooring Solutions of Chester carried out the installation, laying around 200m2 of Tarkett’s Safetred Spectrum safety tiles throughout the ice cream parlour. Installation was quick and simple thanks to the tile format, which needs no welding and creates little installation waste. Individual tiles are lightweight and easy to cut to the desired shape, featuring a backing made from recycled materials that increases dimensional stability as well as minimising environmental impact.
Tarkett’s Safetred Spectrum safety tiles are a heavy-duty vinyl flooring that combines superior slip resistance and ease of maintenance with attractive design, available in a range of 9 classic colours. The tile format allows colours to be mixed and matched more easily than sheet flooring, particularly for smaller areas, offering greater design freedom. As with all of Tarkett’s Safetred ranges, the new tiles feature the Tarkett Safety Clean PUR surface protection, providing improved stain resistance and reducing the amount of water, energy and detergents needed for cleaning by up to 50%. With an R10 slip resistance rating, tiles are manufactured to EN13845 ensuring slip performance is sustained throughout the product’s life. Manufactured at Tarkett’s plant in Lenham, Kent, the new Safetred Spectrum tiles are readily available through leading flooring distributors. T 01622 854040

Full house for Harrogate And there is such a thing as a free lunch!
It’s full ahead for Harrogate - organisers have exceeded expectations for exhibitor bookings for September’s flooring show with over 110 companies now signed up. “We’re delighted with the response - this is going to be a very special show,” says David Wildman of the Harrogate Flooring Show. “The support has been fantastic from manufacturers and we have got a lot to show visitors when we open next month.”
The Harrogate Flooring Show starts on Sunday, September 5th, and continues on Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th.The Sunday opening is new to flooring events at Harrogate and the exhibition centre is celebrating by laying on a traditional Yorkshire Sunday roast for free – you’ll just need a ticket from one of the sponsoring exhibitors, so get there early!
And event organisers have added free wi-fi and a free shuttle bus service to the railway station and main hotels – and even to the airport if you pre-book with the organisers office.
“This event is going to be free and easy for visitors and we aim to put a bit of fun back into flooring shows – making it a real event for everyone involved,” says David. “We’re hoping some people will visit Harrogate for a leisurely weekend as well as taking in the show – it’s a great town to relax in.”
“This is going to be a very special show. The support has been fantastic from manufacturers and we have got a lot to show visitors when we open.”
Discounted hotel rates have been negotiated with rooms starting at £70 per night.
Exhibitor bookings were already ahead of target before alternative show organisers UBM cancelled their NEC Birmingham event which was to be held in the same week as Harrogate. Several key exhibitors immediately switched to Harrogate adding to the main players who had already planned their participation.
“We are in the happy position of not having much left of the space we had allocated to this event,” said David. “But it would be good to see some more of the smaller suppliers joining in – a three metre square stand is less than £1000 and 15 square metres is still available for less than £2000, including the shell scheme.”
Main players for the event include Abingdon, Asiatic, Associated Weavers, Carpenter, Cormar, Edel Telenzo, Furlong, IVC, Lano, Penthouse, Rama, Ulster and Victoria Carpets. A full list is given on the show’s website. In addition to the trade stands, there is a full programme of free seminars and workshops – including practical sessions on installation techniques. There is also a seminar about Carpet Recycling and British Wool are presenting in the Queen Suite on Monday. And for those who like even more freebies, there is a drinks reception in the beautifully refurbished Royal Hall Theatre on Sunday at 5.30pm and Ardex are celebrating their 50th with a celebratory drink in the Queens Suite at the same time on Monday. Afterwards on the Monday, there’s a special comedy night in the Royal Hall Theatre which is open to flooring visitors - see page 52. T 01423 779967

The British Wool column Wool in the spotlight as Prince becomes patron of campaign
News that HRH The Prince of Wales has officially become Patron of the Campaign for Wool has been described as ‘the best thing that has happened to the wool industry for many years’ by Ian Hartley CEO of the British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB). The Prince announced his official commitment to the sheep farmer and wool textile industry at a small gathering of the farming, wool textile and retail sectors at the National Woollen Museum in Llandysul, (Dyfed) Wales at the end of June. Referring to the many fantastic attributes of wool, he commented: “My growing understanding of the fibre’s many naturally ‘smart’ attributes has only served to prove that wool should be better appreciated by everyone and I am delighted that so many designers and major names have put their strength behind it.” Ian Hartley CEO at the BWMB said, “Our sheep farmers and our textile industry already know that wool is a quality fibre for fashion and interiors. It is the retailer and consumer that need to realise that wool rich products have added value, they offer natural sustainability and durability and that is why a profile building campaign is so important. “We hope that we can bring a sea change to the mindset of consumers so that wool is understood, appreciated and properly valued. Ultimately the retail price must allow for more acceptable margins in the upward chain and through to the producer. “Our producers firmly believe that the time is right for wool as the environmental agenda rises and people become more conscious that their choices have an impact on the world we live in. The Prince with his serious interest in these issues is the perfect Patron for the Campaign and we believe this unified effort can make a long lasting difference throughout the wool business.”
HRH at The National Woollen Museum – where he announced his Patronage.
British Wool seminar at the Flooring Show in Harrogate British Wool will run an ‘About Wool for Carpet’ seminar at the Harrogate Flooring Show on Monday 6th September in celebration of the Campaign for Wool which has its consumer launch in October.
“We wanted to do something different this year and the idea of an educational seminar about wool for carpet seemed the right thing to do because we have so many important messages to get over,” said Tim Booth, product development manager at the British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB).
“The Campaign for Wool has had a tremendous impact on the profile of wool particularly since HRH The Prince of Wales officially announced his patronage.”
Significant retail interest is already being seen and many of the major consumer lifestyle and interior magazines have put their strength behind it. October will see lots of special features on wool in product to create interest and ensure that consumers receive the wool message. The Wool Week promotion during 11th to 17th October is supported by John Lewis and Marks and Spencer, both proudly leading the way for High Street profile but many other well known brands and retailers are also involved as are several leading industry organisations and associations.

ool. “We want the carpet retailers to have every opportunity to benefit from this campaign as a lot of British Wool is in carpets and so during the seminar we will be talking about Wool Week and wool promotions.”
“However, we will also talk up the true benefits of wool and the advantages of choosing wool carpet for the home. Additionally, there will be an opportunity to look at the ways the BWMB works with the industry including retailer promotions.” “We are delighted to be at the show and we hope that we get plenty of people attending the seminar and we look forward to seeing both retailers and industry colleagues there.”

Rescue hopes after Duttons’ demise Antron axes two Euro plants
Major manufacturer Duttons Carpets has become the first high profile casualty of the recession this year. The company, the UK’s second largest carpet manufacturer, called in the receiver on July 9 - days before facing court action to recover unpaid taxes.
It is still hoped the Blackburn-based manufacturer can find a trade buyer and as The Stocklists went to press, union leaders at the plant said they were “encouraged” by discussions understood to be taking place regarding a possible management buy-out.
The company has continued trading while talks have carried on. “Dutton Carpets is a productive, viable and important business and it still has a future if the right buyer can be found,” said the official receiver, Christopher Ratten of RSM Tenon. Mr Ratten cited ‘cash flow difficulties’ and the receivers were called in just days before the Inland Revenue would have taken the company to court to try to recover in unpaid taxes and social security.
“Dutton Carpets is a productive, viable and important business and it still has a future if the right buyer can be found” Duttons made pre-tax losses of £311,000 in the year ending 31 March 2009 and a figure of £585,000 was recorded in the accounts as payable to the tax authorities. Though less well known to consumers and some retailers, Duttons plays a key role in the UK carpet industry as the country’s largest “commission manufacturer” – making own-label products for other manufacturers – concentrating on tufting wool-rich carpets. More recently, the company has invested in new plant to service buyers in the contract market which was seen as more resilient than the domestic sector. The implications of any closure would be felt across the industry with the loss of the six million square metres of carpet that Duttons manufactured each year.
Some 120 jobs at the Griffin Mill manufacturing base are at risk. The business, founded in 1979, is wholly owned by its chairman, Alan Booth. Managing Director is John Wright.
Blackburn MP, ex-Labour minister Jack Straw is following the affair: “This is a company I know very well and have been working with. I hope they can pull through.” His first major involvement with the company was when severe flooding in 2003 provided a major and expensive setback for the business.
Invista, the global producer of polymers and fibres best known for its Antron brand, is adopting a new business model that will help to ensure the future health and success of its activities within the European carpet industry. Invista plans to cease flooring operations at its production facility at Östringen in Germany by the end of 2010 and at its site in Kerkrade,The Netherlands, by the end of first quarter 2011.
In future, the European market will be supplied with imported yarns that will continue to be processed at the Michelau facility in Germany. Around 400 employees work at the Östringen site, while approximately 60 employees are engaged in flooring-related activities at the Kerkrade site. Invista Apparel activities at Kerkrade will continue.
Invista will continue to provide its European carpet industry customers with its globally recognised and trusted Antron carpet fibre products: “Our vision is to create a healthy and successful business in Europe by sourcing products from other sites around the world,” comments Dan Stone, President, Invista Performance Surfaces & Materials. For over 20 years the European market has been successfully supplied with Antron branded fibres imported from the US and with recent innovations such as Antron Bio Legacy are produced in the US and imported into Europe.”
“We will continue our close relationships with our partners and will look to strengthen our position in the fibre technology field so that we are able to offer an interesting range of products to our customers in the carpet sector,” explains Stephan Hanke, Business Director Flooring. ‘In June of this year we announced the launch of an innovative product initially intended for the American market. The solution-dyed Antron Lumena carpet fibre with TruBlend technology is the first carpet fibre that contains recycled and renewable content. It is product innovation such as this that will ensure Antron carpet fibre continues to play a significant part in the European carpet industry.” T 0845 450 6434

The zombies are here There are now 150 companies in the UK Floor Coverings industry that are “Zombie” businesses. These companies have seen their performance deteriorate to such as extent that they now exist merely to pay off their debts and survive.
David Pattison, author of the new Plimsoll Analysis, explains: “These companies are in a state, posting growing losses and, despite the obvious freeze in the credit markets, increasing their debts. They are Zombie businesses with debts at an average of 48% of turnover – they exist to service their out of control liabilities. Many are also using their suppliers to finance their growing losses, taking twice as long as to pay their bills as the industry average of 52 days” So can these Zombies be saved? Pattison is clear that not all will survive and those that do have a lot of pain ahead, “The first thing they need to do is sort out their immediate finances. They have to convince their banks and suppliers to keep supporting them or not 58 August 2010
pull the plug. If they can pull that off then the hard work really starts. They urgently need to stem their losses and control costs. The longer it takes them to address these issues, the harder and less likely it is they will ever fix them”. However, Pattison points to some attractive takeover targets hidden among the Zombies, “Canny investors are seeing an opportunity to pick up a bargain. Some of these companies, stuck in a zombie state because of their balance sheet, have lots of potential for new owners to turn it around. We picked 61 companies that we feel have the most potential”. Feature: Buying Groups
Safety in numbers Deeper discounts, wider margins and stronger sales support - what’s not to like! Buying groups are bidding for your business in a drive for membership to overcome the uncertainty of some retailers about the role of the buying groups.
With unprecedented coordination, the leading buying groups are working together to reassure retailers that they can reap the benefits without surrendering their independence. This initiative sees the launch of a new factsheet in The Stocklists (see page 12) which most of the UK’s major groups are supporting to inform retailers how to evaluate the benefits of joining a buying group and how to select the right one for their business. In addition, the groups are collaborating on a joint trade event next year in the Midlands (see opposite). “It is perhaps surprising that not many more than a thousand retailers are in a buying group and that the growth in membership has been relatively slow,” said Chris Moffat of SMG. “In a market as tight as this, there is safety in numbers and the groups can help retailers protect and build their businesses in many different ways.” The new factsheet has been drawn up to equip retailers to consider their options carefully and to ask the right questions. Buying groups do vary quite considerably in their style and approach – and in the way discounting and fees are handled. The level of support also varies from group-to-group.
60 August 2010
“We’ve been working on this project for some months,” said David Spragg of The Stocklists. “Times are hard and we wanted retailers to be able to make an informed judgement of how they could boost their profitability through the buying power of a group.
See the new factsheet on page 12
“It isn’t right for everyone, but every retailer should have run the slide rule over his business to see if a buying group could make a positive difference – no matter how many good deals you already have with your favourite manufacturers!” The factsheet includes a checklist of how to approach buying groups for information and how to make a selection between the groups. It urges retailers to identify groups that will best suit their business and then have these groups draw up a detailed financial analysis to demonstrate the benefits. Most of the main buying groups – ACG, BRM, Flooring One, Greendale and SMG - are supporting the campaign.

Satisfaction in store But at what price? Retailers debate POS… and paying for it! More than two-thirds of retailers rate recent improvements in pointof-sale displays – but the debate continues as to how it should all be paid for. And retailers are asking for price protection to avoid becoming internet showrooms. In our latest survey, 69% of respondents said displays were getting better and a massive 93% said manufacturers were good at keeping sampling up-to-date. 53% said POS was ‘extremely important’ to creating sales and almost 40% said ‘very important’.
The survey comes at a time when there has been a noticeable increase in investment by flooring suppliers in new POS in a bid to secure more ‘real estate on the high street’. But it’s an expensive part of promoting their business and one they can’t afford to get wrong in the current climate.
While there was a general appreciation of improving quality, almost 30% of respondents accused manufacturers of wheeling out the ‘same old stuff ’. A North East retailer said:“There is very little original and innovative thought going into POS. Most of the 'new' stuff is just tinkering.” We asked retailers to league table the different display systems and wall displays came out top in motivating sales at 53% with lecterns coming second at 24% followed by an almost equal appreciation of tombolas and pattern books in joint third place.
One retailer complained about inconsistency in the merchandising approach of some manufacturers: “Why can't manufacturers, or wholesalers, keep a stock of pattern books available? It seems when a product is launched, they go out with a blunderbuss approach but if you try to get one a few months later, there are none available.” Interestingly, only a third of respondents thought they’d got POS about right – 47% said they had too much display material in their store.
There were mixed reactions to recent innovations. 81% of retailers didn’t like display photography taking up space for samples but 53% welcome the recent introduction of video screens on POS – only 25% found them annoying and unhelpful. The use of strong colours in wall displays were welcomed by 75% of respondents ‘even if consumers don’t buy much of these colours. Stands made from wood were the most popular by far at just over 50% with wood and metal on 19% but metal only got the thumbs down with just 6% support. How POS is paid for is a continuing bone of contention and generates mixed responses from retailers. About 50% thought rebate schemes to finance POS was fair but another 43% said more “There is very

material should be provided free. However, a surprising 56% said they would be prepared to pay more for better displays. 38% of retailers expect to spend around £1000 annually on POS and a further 31% allocated around £2000.
The influence on the internet was an unexpected finding from the survey which came out strongly in our ‘soapbox’ feedback. A South West retailer said: “The manufacturer gets to display his products locally but with the advent of the internet there is no guarantee that the retailer with the tombola will secure the order, but its likely the manufacturer will. Manufacturers need to protect their retailer floorspace against esales by only listing on their web sites outlets where product is displayed. Working as an internet showroom has no future!” A North East retailer agreed: “There is nothing wrong with paying for POS but we need some protection on price otherwise there is a tendency to be used as a shop window for the web.”

‘Selective’ show gets support The new-style show for flooring, as part of the UK’s highly successful Interiors show in January, has met with a positive response from exhibitors. The NEC event is already half way to its target.
“It’s going really well,” said Sunny Patel of Interiors organiser UBM. “We have had a very positive response and the industry is waking up to the opportunity this event has to give them a new audience.” The flooring hall at the NEC event in January is aiming for 50 – 60 exhibitors and has secured 25 bookings so far. Lead exhibitors include Brintons, Crucial Trading, Amtico and IVC.
UBM are promising a new audience for the flooring industry, building on the 25,000 visitors who already come to Interiors every year – 7,000 of whom have expressed an interest in carpets, rugs and smooths.
“We want visitors to experience a high quality show. All the right companies will be there.” While the visitor profile at Harrogate is retail-led, Interiors is likely to deliver more specifiers, architects and interior design specialists. The event also hopes to build a strong contract flooring interest.
Organisers are aiming for an ‘exclusive’ approach to recruit exhibitors. “We are being a little choosey,” says Sunny. “As a launch event, we want visitors who make the effort to come and see us to experience a high quality show. All the right companies will be there.”
Interiors opens on January 23 for four days in Hall 2 of the NEC Birmingham. It is a major event with 600 exhibitors across many sectors including furniture, soft furnishing, interior design and lighting as well as flooring. Two months ago, UBM withdrew plans for a National Floor Show in September at the NEC which was scheduled to take place in the same week as the Harrogate Flooring Show. T 020 7921 8442

Firm going under foot
New targets for landfill The second annual Carpet Recycling UK Conference held at the Institute of Engineering and Technology in Birmingham last month has made important progress in setting new targets on landfill diversion.
Attended by over 110 delegates, the conference focussed on the central theme of setting a voluntary industry backed target for carpet recycling and featured speakers, discussions and case studies exploring the actions required to deliver on new goals. Jane Gardner, who took over co-ordination of Carpet Recycling UK earlier this year, used her keynote presentation to call for the industry to work together on a target-led voluntary agreement to reduce waste to landfill by 25% by 2015. Dating back to 1539, Chester Racecourse is one of Britain’s oldest and most famous racecourses. Carpenter, one of the world’s biggest producers of PU underlays was asked to supply 400sqm of its Firmstep underlay for the restaurant area and 225sqm of Powerstep for the director’s boxes.
“We were asked to supply underlay that would help prevent premature wear in busy contract areas. The Powerstep and Firmstep underlay offer luxury and comfort, yet both are perfect for heavy traffic areas.” said Helen Rowberry, national sales manager. Said Lee Rogers, fitter: “Carpenter is my preferred choice of underlay because of the quality, durability and the lightness of the rolls, which makes working with the products so much easier.”
Firmstep is a 7mm thick bonded polyurethane underlay and produced for heavy contract use. Powerstep is a 9mm think bonded polyurethane underlay produced for luxury use, and is ideal for domestic/contract use where high energy absorption is needed. These are just two of a comprehensive collection of nine different underlays offered by Carpenter. Carpenter underlays are manufactured in Glossop, Derbyshire, UK, using recycled PU foam and are one hundred percent recyclable. T 01457 861141

Whilst acknowledging this as a demanding target, she made a firm case for its achievability, citing evidence of the excellent progress made by the association's manufacturing members towards zero post industrial waste by 2012.
With several of this group predicted to meet the target by the end of this year, she contended that rapid improvements in waste reduction are eminently possible, given access to new opportunities for diverting waste streams, a key benefit these companies gain through Carpet Recycling UK membership.
This session also revealed a significant overall increase in UK carpet wastes diverted from landfill in the past year, totalling 26,000 tonnes, up 20% on 2008/2009 figures. Rates of recycling and reuse have held up well despite economic conditions and cutbacks in carpet production, demonstrating the efforts of businesses in the carpet industry to reposition and gain a competitive edge in a depressed market. This has been matched by an increase in recycling and waste processing outlets, from 6 in 2008 to 16 this year, with a forecast of 30 to be in place by the end of 2010. T 0161 440 8325

Undying love for natural colour Recognising a growing public awareness of ecological issues Ulster Carpets have developed Natural Choice, its new eco collection that has recently been launched.
Made from 100% natural undyed wool the collection comprises a variety of textured designs inspired by nature that are complimented with a range of plains. Fortunately nature has gifted us with different sheep breeds which have naturally different coloured fleeces. By blending these fleeces Ulster can create a broad colour bank of entirely natural colours.
The yarn for Natural Choice, like all of Ulster’s yarn, is manufactured at their spinning mill in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, ensuring total control over quality and long term security of supply. Composed from natural, renewable elements Natural Choice will be completely recyclable and biodegradable at the end of its life cycle, and therefore have a minimal effect on the environment. Biggest big shot Industry hot shots turned out in force for The Furnishing Industry Trust’s 16th annual Big Shots day. Some 25 teams, comprising a mix of experts, novices, keen amateurs and first timers, took part in the event at the Holland & Holland grounds at Northwood Middlesex.. “It was fantastic to see such a good level of support in what is undoubtedly a tough economic climate,” said FIT chief executive Charles Kerrigan. The one day shoot – sponsored by The Clare Family Trust and The Bed Show - raised over £15,000 with cash still rolling in for the furnishing industry’s only dedicated charity. It is the second time the Trust, established by former Dreams boss Mike Clare, has sponsored the event, this time for £5,000.The annual clay pigeon shoot has raised nearly £400,000 over the years. During that time organiser David Langford has been instrumental to the success of Big Shots. So the news at this year’s post-shoot lunch that he would be standing down after 16 years was greeted with a standing ovation in recognition of all his hard work.
The day proved, once again, an especially good one for Big Shots regulars Luke and Tracey Riddington and their team,The Lost Samurai/Kyoto Futons.Tracey took Top Female Gun, Luke Top Male Gun and top Pool Shot. And, with their team mates Nick Cancea and Grahame Duff, the foursome scooped the Top Team prize. T 01367 240000
