Flooring factsheet Carpet types WOVEN

TUFTED

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.

Level loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

Regular Maintenance

Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.

Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers! Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet. Use only WOOLSAFE approved products

WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs. The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.

Periodic Cleaning

When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company. If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE approved products. Look for the WOOLSAFE Mark on the bottle or package.

It is best to engage the services of a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning company. To get a really expert job done entrust the work to a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company.

These companies are fully trained, have been in business for a considerable length of time, are members of one or more recognised professional trade associations related to the cleaning industry and have a reputation for top quality service. And they use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents on your wool carpets and rugs!

If you have a problem with a carpet or rug that requires an independent inspector, a network of carpet complaint investigators, trained and registered by The WOOLSAFE Organisation is available throughout the UK and Ireland. WOOLSAFE Registered Inspectors have extensive experience in investigating the causes for carpet complaints based on their practical involvement with carpets and rugs over many years. They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers, retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can carry out or commission tests where required, and will provide comprehensive reports.

General Rules for Spot Removal

Treatments 1.

• Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet roll or clean cloth • Scoop up or scrape off solids

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment – if unsure, use solvent first • Always work from the edge of the spot inwards • BLOT, do NOT rub

• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; work into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge

• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed carpet tiles

• When using solvents always ensure there is plenty of fresh air ventilation • Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters with clean water

• Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Why join?

www.smg-group.co.uk Contact: David Lewis Tel: 0118 932 3832 info@smg-group.co.uk

Associated Carpet Group www.smartercarpets.co.uk Contact: Richard Moore Tel: 01942 825520 rjmoore65@googlemail.com rmoore@smartercarpets.com

Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains.

More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Pick the right one

How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view www.greendalecarpets.co.uk Contact: Rob Harding Tel: 01432 852000 Fax: 01432 852005 rharding@greendalecarpets.co.uk

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any

fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see what you would actually use

• Check out the product ranges offered including the own-label options and the UK/European mix

• Ensure you understand any rules that may limit your flexibility to run your business the way you want

Key benefits

Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Increase sales • ‘Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with point-of-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Access professional services • Business services • Financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts.

Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings • Regional workshops • Supplier presentations • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Benefits

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards

How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

THE STOCKLISTS January 2013

Crumb

PU foam

www.numa-online.co.uk

Types

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.

N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLES

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

SHEDDING

The original carpet tile

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPS

This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

• shedding • pulled loops

SPROUTING

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

SHADING

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

STATIC

Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOL

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair.

Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.

A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

an informed choice.

PILE REVERSAL (SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONS

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.

The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet.

The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

FLATTENING

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

SOILING

Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or

any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave

sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust

- which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre THE BEST CARPET WOOL

Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home. THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

SAFE

DURABLE

Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency.

Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason.

Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air.

Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.

Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production.

Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.

Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

HAPPY NEW YEAR Please may we wish all our customers and friends in the trade all the best for the coming year. We hope we all have a good one. Price Reductions You should have by now received your new JLW/Goodacre Price List. Once again we have kept rises to a minimum and kept to our tradition of only one new price list a year. We have managed a tiny price reduction for Goodacre products as we switch to our own production facility. This is a small gesture at the moment but we hope to improve on this further as time goes by

Quick clic from Moduleo Click from Moduleo is a uniquely flexible flooring solution which has proven to be extremely popular since its launch in May this year.

Licence to clic Unilin and Välinge have announced that they will cooperate on the holographic L2C label programme, which was introduced at Domotex Shanghai of 2012 and already implemented by several manufacturers. The L2C label programme, which stands for “license to clic”, was introduced to support the interest of licensed companies and the companies doing business in products manufactured by these companies.

Unilin and Välinge received many complaints from licensed manufacturers, importers and distributors that certain manufacturers of licensed products did not comply with the contractual obligations of its license contracts. These non-complying manufacturers seriously damaged the competitiveness of the manufacturers of the companies that were honoring their contractual commitments.

In order to stop this unfair competition and prevent patent infringements, it was decided to introduce this numerically controlled identification label program, by which certain manufacturers of licensed products are asked to attach a unique numbered holographic label to its boxes of licensed products. The license agreements with those manufacturers has been amended in such a way that products without labels will be considered as unlicensed products. Importers and distributors doing business in those unlabeled products can then also be found to infringe the specific patent rights of Unilin and/or Välinge. Unilin and Välinge will cooperate with custom organizations world-wide and with market research companies to block these unlabeled alleged infringing products and to claim damages from the companies doing business in them.

TacFast getaway The innovative TacFast system is the ideal solution for quick-turnaround refurbishment projects that need a high quality and speedy floor installation system that delivers brilliant results every time.

Consisting of a LocPlate interlocking disc and plate structure, the TacFast system is placed above the subfloor surface, with a hook and loop fastener that rapidly attaches the floorcovering. Crucially, this system can be used directly over any existing flooring, making it the ideal choice for refurbishment projects that are pushed for time and money.

As Jonathan Stone, CCO, TacFast Systems International explains, “Costs of refurbishment projects can easily run out of control, especially if you do not factor in the time it takes to remove any old flooring. In fact, you can easily spend as much on lifting the old product and preparing the subfloor as you can on the new flooring. But this is where TacFast steps in, as the system eradicates the need for all this inconvenience and mess. TacFast allows the new flooring to be fitted over the existing surface, as long as it is roughly firm and flat, and provides a high quality finish.”

The TacFast system requires no adhesives, so there are no lengthy drying times or unpleasant fumes to contend with, and it will level out any slight discrepancies in the existing floor surface. It also acts as a DPM to stop any moisture migration and can be used to lay almost all types of flooring, including ceramics, natural stone, LVT, wood and laminate.

RAG’s roaring fortieth In 2013 F. Ball and Co. Ltd will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Recommended Adhesives Guide (RAG), the industry’s most trusted guide to adhesives and floorcovering compatibility. Launched in 1973, the RAG features over 5,500 adhesive recommendations, all endorsed by their respective manufacturers, for floorcoverings from over 200 leading worldwide manufacturers. Based on customer feedback and stringent testing, the F. Ball RAG has evolved through numerous formats over the past 40 years. The RAG is now available in a handy A5 printed edition, an interactive format on the F. Ball website and a free ‘iRAG’ app for smartphones and tablets that is downloadable from the iTunes store, Android Market and Windows Marketplace. Every year over 12,000 copies are requested of the annually updated, print version of the RAG.

Commenting on the anniversary, F. Ball’s Marketing Manager, Richard Harris, explains: “The RAG has come a long way since it was first published in 1973. By keeping pace with modern working practices we’ve developed an invaluable tool for floorcovering manufacturers, contractors and specifiers. The RAG’s continued success is a testament to the ongoing importance of providing reliable information about adhesive compatibility to today’s contractors.”

Raising their profile The German company Küberit Profile Systems ended the business year with an increased turnover - the increase of floor profiles made of aluminium, brass and stainless steel was 9% higher than the year before and is a new record in the history of the company. Based on these positive figures, Küberit starts the current year with optimism and a wide new range of products in high quality coated flooring profiles and angle stair nosing profiles.

The focus is on the advantages of a new technique of digital printing which gives highly accurate decors, fascinating colours and the ability to customise designs to meet individual specifications.

Küberit managing director Frank Sondermann invested in 2011 in this new digital printing technology and installed the machine in a second plant in Drolshagen. This allows the scanning of every flooring decor up to a size of 1.800 x 1.100 mm and printing it in a brilliant resolution to meet customers’ demands in the requested quantities. The individual decors will be delivered up to a minimum order quantity of only 100 metres per décor after approval by the customer. The printing machine has a capacity of 2.900 meters per hour and the capacity of coating is about 4 million metres per year. The overlays which are used can be classified as AC 3 and fulfil the same abrasion resilience as other Küberit flooring profiles.

York launch for waste scheme DC Waste Management has launched an innovative collection scheme for carpet fitting wastes from local carpet and flooring retailers in the Yorkshire area. Set up in conjunction with Carpet Recycling UK, the industry-backed association for recycling and reusing waste carpet, this new recycling scheme supplies bulk bags in which retailers can store their carpet fitting wastes.

It is estimated that some 15,000 tonnes of clean, identifiable carpet waste are going to landfill in the UK every year, representing a sizeable waste of resources.

Dewsbury-based DC Waste collects the full bags for further processing and replaces these with empty ones. Waste carpet off-cuts are sent to local recyclers, such as Pennine Blending in Huddersfield, where they are made into new products. Pennine can process these offcuts to extract fibres for reuse, rather than them being lost for ever in landfill. The one-tonne bulk bags are labelled as ‘wool-rich carpet offcuts only’ and ‘synthetic carpet offcuts only’. This helps fitters to place their fitting wastes into the correct bags, helping to segregate material types before processing.

Additionally, the firm has developed software to track the weight and types of carpet being recycled by each retailer, allowing it to provide retailers with accurate reports on their progress with recycling their carpet fitting wastes. T 0161 440 8325

www.carpetrecyclinguk.com

Record recycling More than 6,000 tonnes of carpet waste was diverted from landfill in 2012 by UK-based manufacturing members of Carpet Recycling UK – representing a diversion rate of 99%. These manufacturers prevented 6,049 tonnes of waste carpet offcuts from the production process – a record-breaking figure. Of the 6,049 tonnes, recycling accounted for 5,241 tonnes and energy recovery was 808 tonnes. The high calorific value embedded in carpets makes offcuts ideal for energy generation.

“This is a fantastic achievement and testament to the supreme efforts made by our UK-based manufacturers in diverting materials from UK landfill sites, with the obvious benefits in resource recovery and reduced environmental impact,” commented Laurance Bird, Director of CRUK. “This illustrates that new outlets and innovative end uses for recycled carpet waste are developing all the time. There is a lot of entrepreneurial spirit willing to turn waste carpet into a new raw material resource,” he added.

CRUK is managed by resource recovery specialist Axion Consulting and was set up by industry leaders to develop viable solutions to the 400,000 tonnes of carpet waste landfilled in the UK each year. Landfill diversion has grown to 16.5% in 2011, but CRUK aims to hit a recycling target of 25% by 2015.

Back to the floor future Leading flooring manufacturer Forbo Flooring Systems has launched ‘Back to the Floor’ – a new collection and recycling scheme for installation off-cuts of Forbo flooring products that will help participants save money and safeguard the environment.

Managed by resource recovery expert Axion Consulting, this innovative scheme collects and reprocesses smooth vinyl, cushioned vinyl, Marmoleum and Flotex installation off-cuts for recycling back into new Forbo products. Back to the Floor will play a key part in Forbo’s drive to reduce its environmental impact by 25% by the end of 2015 through applying its 4R’s – Reduce, Renewable, Reuse and Recycle.

Flooring contractors, installers and distributors are being invited to call Axion on 0161 355 7618 to register an interest in the scheme, which offers significant cost savings versus sending the waste flooring material to landfill and complies with Site Waste Management legislation. Registered Back to the Floor participants will be provided with colourcoded polythene bags and bulk bags which can be collected from site, or dropped off at participating distributors, when filled with the specified materials. With landfill costs averaging £93 per tonne, according to WRAP’s annual gate fees report 2012, it is estimated that potential substantial cost savings can be made by using the scheme as opposed to landfill. All participants receive a certificate of commitment, demonstrating their environmental credentials that can also help them win new business.

Enrolling on a roll The Quick-Step Academy is celebrating after a hugely successful opening year that has seen the team accredit almost 100 Master Installers and put over 150 professional flooring fitters through their paces. With significant levels of investment over the past few months and with even more planned for 2013, there has never been a better time for fitters to enrol on one of the academy’s comprehensive courses.

As Darren Robinson, training manager, Quick-Step Academy, explains, “Since opening the doors in June 2012, we have been extremely busy training installers with all kinds of experience levels. From those who have been in the industry for a significant number of years right through to apprentices, the academy has seen so many success stories it is difficult to keep count! But absolutely key to our success is the level of commitment and support that we show all of our trainees. We are devoted to providing installers with first-class training and the benefits to go with it that will enhance their skills and help them to reap the rewards of their hard work.”

The three-day Master Installer course, designed for those with at least two years’ experience of wood and laminate flooring installations, has been the runaway success of the academy’s programme. The extraordinary demand for spaces can in part be attributed to the academy’s focus on promoting all those who successfully complete the course and achieve Master Installer status. Driving homeowners to Master Installers through the ‘Find an Installer’ section on www.quick-step.co.uk, the 2013 Quick-Step consumer brochure will also have a dedicated section promoting the work of Master Installers. With 250,000 printed copies distributed directly to homes across the UK, the Master Installer message is set to spread. “The Quick-Step Academy is dedicated to protecting the flooring industry and filling it with accredited individuals who provide homeowners with exceptional results, which is why we are committed to investing in the Master Installer course,” continues Darren Robinson. “We have a dedicated plan to promote the superiority of Master Installers to consumers, and in the past year this has seen us gaining primetime televisions slots on shows such as Channel 5’s Cowboy Builders. We plan to attend the Ideal Home Show in 2013 to directly interact with visitors and explain the benefits of choosing Master Installers, and we will back this up with a comprehensive PR and online marketing campaign throughout 2013. With all of this activity planned, we really do encourage fitters to enrol on the Master Installer course. We are sure that Master Installers will be the flooring installer of choice in 2013 and beyond!”

Making the web a good site easier! The web just hasn’t clicked for hundreds of flooring retailers who still find themselves without a web presence or are embarrassed by their current appearance on the internet alongside increasingly tekkie competitors.

Many web-savvy retailers have created excellent sites including online trading and advanced product galleries but for many small businesses, the need is for something more simple. “Many retailers and small businesses just want a presence on the internet which doesn’t let them down and looks after itself,” says David Spragg of Floorsites, the web business of The Stocklists magazine. “For these types of businesses, their potential customers are just using the web to check them out and to make sure the business looks reasonably professional,” he said. “Nine times out of ten they’re just finding out what your opening times are or where they can park near your store.”

“Many retailers and small businesses just want a presence on the internet which doesn’t let them down and looks after itself ” it. The site doesn’t need to be touched again unless you move!

But The Stocklists has taken some care with an easy online editing system that lets owners enter new information using a standard wordprocessor-like tool. They can change what the site says about their business or they can just add offers and announcements on their home page, The site comes with a bundle of 50 flooring photos that can be used with the site – or people can upload their own photos and logos.

Possibly the best button on the editing tool is the one that resets the page content to its generic flooring content if you get into trouble!

The Floorsites website comes with seven pages that have been written to suit most retailers. As well as the Home and About Us pages, there are four pages on flooring topics – carpets, vinyls, laminates and woods. If this doesn’t quite fit your business, you can change what the pages are about – for example, the woods page can be changed to be about cleaning. On the About Us page there’s a form that emails enquiries to you and also an automatic link from your postcode to Google maps so that customers can find out exactly where you are and get directions.

Included in the package, you get to choose your own web address which is specific to your business or the tekkie people at The Stocklists can help transfer existing addresses you might own or replace existing

There are a few options for a quick fix to the internet issue. Buying groups often offer their members a place on their own websites – sometimes with the ability to have their own branding across the top of a more general site.

The yourfloors.com system offers a similar approach with the opportunity to sell products online and the Carpet Foundation has an excellent free service for a home page for registered retailers on their site.

The Floorsites package from The Stocklists aims to offer the best of both worlds, a ready-made website under your own name that looks good even if you do nothing else with it. And a simple on-screen editing system that allows you to customise the information and edit page content as often as you want. The system costs a £390 one-off fee to set-up and then £90 a year to maintain. Fill out an online form and this loads the site with the basic relevant information – contact information, location, openings and so on – and then you select from the image options to personalise the site and that’s

Feature: Carpet craft

Life after looming disaster The home of carpet hopes to preserve a key part of its heritage through a pioneering project in Kidderminster to rescue the skills and technology of a bygone era and apply them to a commercial and cultural future. In 2007 the company producing the legendary Sultana quality of Axminster carpet ceased to exist and the eight unique working Victorian full pitch spool Axminster looms seemed destined to become scrap metal, when they were rescued by The Living Looms project: a not-forprofit project designed to conserve high quality carpet looms in production. The purpose behind this act of preservation was to prevent further loss of existing traditional textile products which would affect owners and curators who are maintaining Britain's built heritage, and also to conserve Britain's traditional textile knowledge, skills and technologies for future generations: to deploy and develop in both traditional and innovative ways.

“By conserving buildings, equipment and skills we conserve memories and values, the very foundations of a community; from which sustainable regeneration can grow” David Luckham, a director of the Living Looms project, has sourced and developed new and replacement carpets for both historic and contemporary buildings for more than forty years. Clients have included the Albert Hall, the Mansion House, Chatsworth House, Windsor Castle and numerous National Trust, English Heritage and other public and private properties. The other director of The Living Looms project, Mo Mant, whose background is in building conservation and regeneration, has also witnessed the decline of the traditional textile industry.

As well as the losses for house owners and curators, there is a major effect on the communities in textile towns such as Halifax and Kidderminster when textile companies close or move production abroad. Communities lose not only buildings and employment, but also pride in their skills and a unifying identity.

42 January 2013

Says Mo, “by conserving buildings, equipment and skills we conserve memories and values, the very foundations of a community; from which sustainable regeneration can grow.”

In February 2012, a long awaited order was received from The National Trust to recreate the printed tapestry Library carpet at Felbrigg Hall, Norfolk and design work started immediately at Grosvenor Wilton's studios. With the design work now complete The Living Looms workshop will be making the carpet during the summer months of 2013. At the same time it is proposed to weave just 500 meters each of three 27" wide Sultana archive designs: Blue Amalienborg, Sun King and Red or Blue Medallion (depending on demand). The order book will be open from January 1st 2013. As part of the Sultana revival The Living Looms are searching for Sultana sample books and memorabilia and will be very pleased to hear of any that still exist. Feature: Prospects for 2013

Optimism in the Age of Austerity? The flooring sector has remained remarkably resilient in the teeth of the toughest trading conditions for decades but as the age of austerity is officially extended, we asked some of the top people in the flooring business to look ahead at 2013.

“The Autumn was not up to expectations for many retailers and it has been very tough out there,” says Associated Weavers MD Steve Elliott. “But I believe the decline is over. There are real signs that we have reached the bottom and that the market will plateau in 2013. That sounds negative but it’s not - I think it would be a great relief to many if they thought it wasn’t going to get any worse.” Associated Weavers actually had a strong 2012 with improved sales performance. Like many of the more savvy companies, they accept that there is very little growth in the market itself so it’s all about keeping the business you have got and then growing your share of the market. AW are seeng the benefit of increasing their sales team by 50% two years ago and reducing costs. Manx boss Graham Harris reckons the recession has forced everyone to up their game and extols the maxim “the harder I work, the luckier I get.” He explains: “It certainly isn’t getting any easier out there and if you stand still for very long you will quickly fall down the pecking order.”

“We need to give our sales teams and our retailers as much chance to sell as possible and that means new products. We have plenty of new ideas bubbling under and they will drive our continued growth.”

Along with some other key players, Manx has moved to increase the breadth of its portfolio to grow revenues, developing a comprehensive polypropylene range to add to its acknowledged prowess in wool. “You can be pigeon-holed in this market by just doing one thing well. Now, you have to do everything well. This approach has helped us buck the trend,” says Graham. “I think there is a bit more light when we look into the market in 2013.” Broadening the portfolio has been the response of many major players in the market. Like Manx, Georgian Carpets are known for wool but synthetic Woltec accounts for 20% of their sales since its launch in 2011.

Cormar Carpets is another key example: “For us the expansion into more polypropylene ranges has been a success. We now have an Easy-Clean collection as strong as our wool portfolio and that has undoubtedly made a difference,” says David Cormack of Cormar.

“Considering we were in a ‘double dip recession’ for most of last year, I think trade has been reasonably good, especially for many independent retailers. At the beginning of last year I would say that most of the industry considered that there would be ‘no improvement’ or ‘things would get worse’. Looking back I think that most would say that trade has improved, moderately. And certainly not got any worse!”

David is positive about prospects in 2013. “We are expanding our sales team to 23 nationally, so we must but be fairly confident. Having said that, trade is not easy still, and there is no sign of the housing market improving greatly, especially in the provinces. So we remain cautiously optimistic about prospects for 2013.”

Martin Peace at Abingdon agrees that we’ve probably reached the bottom of the cycle and expects this year to be no worse that 2012. “It’s not going to get any easier with the continuing austerity measures but you have to buckle down and be strong and continue to invest,” he says.

“To be honest, I think we enjoy the challenge. It makes us sharper and more responsive to what our customers want,” he says. “As a result we were happy with the results in 2012 and are confident about 2013.”

Abingdon’s vertical integration - they produce their own polypropylene yarn in Wales - has allowed them to react more quickly than some to changing market demands (not withstanding a fire at their plant this year which the company overcame spectacularly quickly to maintain supplies). Again, substantial investment in POS, sampling and the sales team is the hallmark of those companies who are thriving rather than surviving. “Once you stop investing and doing the next thing, you fall back.” So new product development remains key - as well as managing the

“I believe the decline is over. There are real signs that we have reached the bottom” current ranges more closely. The trend of increasing acceptance of polypropylene in the market generally has helped Abingdon, as well as those companies who have recently switched more of their portfolio to synthetic fibre. The fickle nature of consumer demand is difficult to predict but two factors that also loom large is manufacturers’ analysis of the housing market and the Euro.

Housing starts remain sluggish though there has been some improvement in the South of England but the British Retail Consortium commented last month that furniture and flooring continued to be plagued by a “lack of fluidity” in the housing market. The weakness of the Euro has favoured some importers but this is offset by increases in synthetic yarn. The unpredictability remains a key problem for planning investment. But as a side issue, every cloud has a silver lining for those manufacturers who have reaped the benefit of insurance work following the severe flooding late last year in parts of the UK.

Readers’ Survey

2013... are you feeling lucky? Are you expecting a happy new year?

“The decline is over” says one carpet manufacturer who knows how tough it is out there to win new business.

What do you think are the prospects for 2013? Does the ‘age of austerity’ mean we’ll be bumping along the bottom forever or are there signs that consumer nerves are steadier given that employment hasn’t collapsed and deficit is down?

What more could manufacturers do to help? How could the Government make things a little easier?

British manufacturers have been managing their costs to increase margins wherever possible, and to minimise price increases and the major players are certainly not running for cover. There continues to be substantial investment in getting retailers’ attention through range launches, sampling, POS and strengthening sales teams.

“We have been selective about the retailers we work with and not sought to grow that number but we have more sales people who can spend more time with our customers - listening to what they want and making sure they get it. Overall, I’m quite optimistic about this year,” he says.

You can join our online survey panel and you’ll be invited every two months to contribute your views - it’s anonymous so you can say exactly what you think.

“We will be more aggressive this year in product development,” says AW’s Steve Elliott. “We will continue to invest in our strong sellers updating colours and sampling - on top of bringing new products into the market.

For the record, the Government’s independent Office for Budget Responsibility forecasts growth of 1.2% in 2013, 2.0% in 2014 and 2.3% in 2015 - but how much of that finds its way into the High Street is much less clear. In 2013, flooring suppliers will be competing harder and harder for their piece of the cake. The jam in that cake will be spread pretty thinly, and

DOMOTEX 2013 There are signs of cautious optimism as the European flooring industry gets ready for its greatest annual event...

The world’s ‘festival of flooring’ looks to luxury for market growth

The international floor coverings industry eagerly awaits its main event, Domotex, which takes place in Hannover from 12-15 January 2013. Approximately 1,400 companies from 60 countries will be showing their latest products and collections at the leading international trade fair for carpets and floor coverings. Some 40,000 trade visitors from more than 80 countries are expected in Hannover. “Domotex is the most important date in the calendar of the international carpet and floor coverings sector. No other event offers the industry such a popular and internationally acclaimed platform. The keynote theme Flooring Deluxe reflects an important market trend in favour of premium floor coverings and clearly puts the focus of Domotex 2013 on products that excel in terms of quality and design,” commented Deutsche Messe Management Board member Dr. Andreas Gruchow.

In line with the Domotex claim – “The World of Flooring” – every product group and trend will be showcased in detail in Hannover. Hand-made and machine-made carpets, textile and resilient floor coverings, parquet and laminates take pride of place, however equipment and products for floor laying, maintenance and applications technology will also feature in this impressive array.

Accordingly, the trade visitors come from the wholesale/retail trade, the field of architecture, interior design and the skilled trades to obtain a complete market overview.. Some 54 percent of the visitors come from outside Germany and as many as 90 percent are involved in making their company’s purchase decisions. These figures put Domotex at the top of the league of international trade fairs.

“Here you can meet the partners you’ll need to access new markets; you can meet existing contacts and lay the basis for international business leads. Domotex in Hannover is the place where demand and supply in the floor coverings sector are perfectly matched,” said Dr. Gruchow.

Demand for high-quality flooring continues to grow, not only on the consumer market but also in the contracting sector. Whether for the home or commercial premises, modern design and top quality materials play an essential part in interior design concepts. The keynote theme of “Flooring Deluxe” at the next Domotex will focus on premium quality textile floor coverings, parquet and laminates. In order to showcase these products to best effect a special Flooring Deluxe display area has been dedicated to textile floor coverings in Hall 6. Another special area in Hall 9 has been allocated to high-quality parquet and laminate floors. Top-name exhibitors will stage presentations around the centrally located special areas.

Leaf through a little luxury even if you are not going to Hannover this month... The key theme at Domotex this year is ‘Flooring Deluxe’ as event organisers say “luxury, splendour and drama are set for a big revival in 2013 and this is reflected in a new generation of carpets, rugs and floor coverings.” As well as special displays through the show, a fascinating eBook on how these trends relate to carpets is available to view from the Domotex website. www.domotex.de

Wools of New Zealand will give centre stage at Domotex to Laneve, the only fully traceable carpet wool, which is going from strength to strength in the marketplace.

Wools of New Zealand is one of only eight carpet companies that have been invited to participate in the new Flooring de Luxe event, in Hall 6, the highlight of Domotex 2013. Eight concept rooms will be set around a central communications area and participants have full creative licence to ‘push the boundaries with soft floorcoverings’. The aim is to showcase ground breaking designs and ideas, be it a lifestyle concept or a room design, to illustrate the scope and role of modern flooring. The overall winner will be chosen by visitor votes as well as by a distinguished panel of judges comprising leading European architects and designers.

Joanna Ramsden, WNZ creative manager, who is masterminding their entry, is working to the theme of ‘Floor Level Living’. Commenting on her plans, she said: “Underfloor comfort and low-level living is increasingly becoming a lifestyle trend. Underfloor heating, coupled with the natural benefits of wool, are key factors which influence the choices of product we present on the floor. Our featured concept combines avantgarde styling with the natural practicalities of Floor Level Living, underlined by the unique natural attributes of New Zealand wool. The room itself will carry an eco-message intertwined with designer creativity and all components are ‘environmentally aware’. The Laneve carpet, a fresh and bright new design by Wools of New Zealand, uses wool which can be traced all the way back to Mark Shadbolt’s farm on the Banks Peninsula. It was then spun by Danspin and manufactured by G-Tuft for Crucial Trading. The underlay is made from recycled wool carpets and car tyres. The end result is the ultimate in comfort and luxury underfoot.

The inside/outsideTrompe L’Oeil illusion, painted by well-known artist Laura Casey, encapsulates the natural theme. The creative will demonstrate exquisitely hand painted effects - bringing artistry to the fore and combining artistic vision with ethical values. The knitted Merino wool poufs and wool fabric-covered floor cushions co-ordinate with the floor. Aside from participating in Flooring de Luxe, Wools of New Zealand will be on Stand B12 in Hall 5. The intention this year is to demonstrate the scope and potential of Laneve as a fibre via the diversity of product on show from key partners. Laneve partners co-exhibiting include Flock, Brockway, Crucial Trading, Danspin and Martinelli.

David Hammond, Market Manager, Europe and North America for Wools of New Zealand said: “Domotex is a pivotal event for Wools of New Zealand and Laneve. This year we will have new partners, new products and, of course, the prestigious Flooring de Luxe event in which we are honoured to be included. Our participation is, I am sure, in no small part, down to the success of Laneve and how it marries creativity, texture and product development with environmental issues. ”

“It goes without saying that the luxury vinyl tile market is booming, and set to grow even further in 2013 thanks to the high-performing nature of LVT flooring and the increasingly authentic designs available”

“The Aqua Woods collection represents our first step into the LVT market, and is just the tip of what’s to come,” comments Josh Ashby, product manager, UK Flooring Direct. “It goes without saying that the luxury vinyl tile market is booming, and set to grow even further in 2013 thanks to the high-performing nature of LVT flooring and the increasingly authentic designs available.

“Instead of flooding the market with a variation on a theme, however, we have created a range that is in a completely different league. All of our designs have been carefully created in-house to offer maximum originality, and unlike a lot of the competition, we have utilised the Uniclic system to its full potential to enable faster and easier fittings that are more convenient for installers and homeowners alike.” Suitable for underfloor heating, the Aqua Woods collection will inject style into all areas of the home.

Flower on Flooring News News The new rise of laminate flooring Taking a restrospective view of the popularity of various types of flooring provides a fascinating insight into the rise and fall of a number of materials, colours and textures. Following the launch of a number of new laminate designs in 2012, with more to come this year, there is currently evidence of growing interest in this type of flooring. Balterio’s Xperience Plus in Amber Elm

The company uses its PressXpress fitting system on Xperienceplus to provide quick and easy fitting. Balterio will be exhibiting at both the Domotex and Bau exhibitions. Woodpecker states that its Lamin8 flooring has established itself in the market as a leading product in terms of value, quality and profit potential. The latest collection, launched earlier in the year, includes a selection of five new colours, with prices starting at £8.48m2.

The range is designed to deliver an authentic looking floor as a cost effective alternative to solid or real wood. The company explains its Lamin8 floors are made from premium quality high density fibreboard, guaranteeing the integrity of the product. All coatings comply with the AC3 (heavy domestic / light commercial) rating. With the introduction of a patented glueless joint system, Lamin8 floors can be laid and re-laid with ease and confidence, the company concludes. Urban Oak is part of Kenton Lamin8 collection

Balterio states that laminate flooring remains one of the most popular floor coverings, due to its appearance, installation, comfort and easy maintenance. With a focus on innovation and quality, the company says it is definitely playing in the “premier league”.

The wide collection of Balterio laminate floors now includes decors with a matt finish. Butterscotch Elm, Dakota Elm and Amber Elm in the new Xperienceplus collection combine a matt finish with the new 3D-Wood Effect structure. This is designed to give a dimensional mat appearance and emphasise the natural relief of the wood grain, with an elegant, two-sided V-groove providing a quality finish.

Quick-Step previously offered the same flooring options to all its customers worldwide, but has now developed collections to suit specific countries or regions. It explains that it has seen a reaction to globalisation and increasing desire for greater authenticity. Vintage is all the rage again, it states, and the reclaimed look is gradually becoming visible in all segments of interiors.

The company’s most popular styles include oak and walnut effects. Its Series Elite 10mm American Black Walnut V Groove laminate planks provide a colourful flooring alternative, he continues. However, the past 18 months have seen trend-led decors steadily growing in popularity, with white effect planks taking particular precedence, such as the Series 7mm Loc White Oak V Groove Laminate Flooring, Mr Ashby concludes.

Quick-Step promotes the ‘cosiness’ of laminates

Quick-Step’s answer to the desires and pressures of modern society is the introduction of cosy floors, with a soft and peaceful look to encourage relaxation. With all colours now fashionable, from brown, black and grey, all the way up to pastels, the art of being fashionable is in the way we combine colours, shapes and materials: new with vintage, black with pastel shades, rough and smooth, etc. The company states this is why Quick-Step reclaimed floors are perfectly suited to country homes interiors and industrial and contemporary interior designs alike.

Josh Ashby, product manager, UK Flooring Direct, says: “Laminate flooring shows no signs of fading thanks to the increasingly realistic nature of the designs available.” The quality of laminate flooring has grown in the last 12 months, he says, with even value options improving their effects and performance benefits.

“Our Series Authentic 8mm laminate range is a great example of this, featuring authentic textures that match the printed wood grain to provide a seamless finish as well as being hardwearing enough for heavy domestic environments,” says Mr Ashby.

The British Wool column Natural beauty is the British Wool story for Surfaces in Las Vegas. There is no better place to meet the industry than at the world’s top flooring trade shows and British Wool is back on tour again in January with a space at Domotex in Germany and Surfaces 2013 in Las Vegas.

Across the Atlantic…. to promote British Wool

The market in the USA continues to be important for British Wool textiles and wool is enjoying a more significant profile since the Campaign for Wool launched in September last year. British Wool will have a stand at Surfaces in Las Vegas and will promote the fibre for its natural, sustainable beauty.

Natural beauty is the British Wool story for Surfaces in Las Vegas.

Tim Booth comments, “The activity this year is very much focused on why British Wool is a great choice for carpets. Natural beauty is at the heart of our message and we are of course keen to emphasise our Life Cycle Analysis study and Best Management standards – in the USA as the green vote is of growing importance.” Axminster Carpets will also be in attendance at the show and will showcase their North American range of products.

Campaign for Wool measures up the media Significant media results for the consumer facing activity under the Campaign for Wool led to a higher profile for all wool during 2012.

The results of media analysis showed that there were over 230,000 ‘opportunities-to-see’, that is articles, news, and images - both in print and online during the key weeks around Wool Week.

“Raising the profile of wool is vitally important to the Campaign because the consumer is faced with so many different messages and so many brands,” Bridgette Kelly of the Campaign for Wool explains.

“This media activity supports British Wool and other wools and also all levels of the industry because there is a broad level of promotion going on continuously that ensures wool is not in the shadows.”

New Year in Hannover…

The New Year gets off to a fast and furious start with the ever impressive Domotex in Hannover. The first major trade show of the year, attracts about 45,000 international visitors and is always a great wake-up call for the industry. Although UK manufacturers generally do not exhibit, many are there to walk the floor because it is a fantastic place to see a really broad range of product and some truly stunning designs in rugs. The BWMB team will of course be promoting the features and benefits of British Wool as well as information from the Campaign for Wool - the industry-wide promotional initiative that is promoting wool across the world.

Tony Oakland-Smith, Head of Marketing for British Wool says: “Domotex is a great place for the trade to learn about emerging trends, developments and innovations in the world-wide flooring market.

“We are delighted to be back there this year as it gives us and our customers an ideal opportunity not only to find out about the latest developments but also to meet those interested in learning more about British Wool and as in previous years our exhibition space can be used as a meeting point for our wool partners.” Visit the British Wool Marketing Board on stand F32 Hall 5.

“Online activity is very important – we are seeing the way that the viral marketing can be very successful in areas such as fashion, interiors, knitting and craft. People tend to colonise on specific media platforms and common interest is the connecting tissue here while loyalty is the result.”

The first Campaign event for 2013 is the major exhibition Wool House, which will present the biggest ever showcase for wool and will open in March at Somerset House in London. It will feature seven rooms designed by leading interior designers and wool in all its guises including in carpets and rugs will be on show to visitors. “The path for the Campaign in 2013 is to continue to ensure we have high profile activities in the UK and internationally and build a strong future for wool,” said Bridgette.

Value-led elegance Brockway Carpets is aiming to boost its market share with the introduction of its new ‘essentials Collection’. Designed to combine everyday value with Brockway’s signature high quality, the Collection comprises two brand new contemporary ranges and is aimed at the budget conscious consumer.

The ‘essentials Collection’ is designed to be naturally tough and comfortably practical, with understated elegance and includes new ranges inspired by natural shades of limestone and marble.

Commenting on the new launch, Brockway managing director Charles Annable said: “Brockway has long held an excellent reputation as a supplier of high quality, premium and design-led carpets thanks to our prestigious Classic and Designer Collections, but this proved to us we needed to carve a niche collection at the value-led end of the market too.

“The ‘essentials Collection’ takes our established brand into a new market arena, enabling us to consolidate and integrate Brockway completely within the carpet sector and become leaders at the premium and value end of the market. Importantly, this is a major development for Brockway and it only cements our aim to remain a leading carpet manufacturer within the UK with a majority market share,” he said.

Joining Brockway’s celebrated Classic and Designer Collections, the ‘essentials Collection’ includes new ranges Portland and Purbeck. Made from 100% new British Wool, Portland is a traditional loop pile carpet featuring seven contemporary natural shades including Alabaster, Mortar and Iron.

Continuing the natural theme, Purbeck is a practical twist pile carpet made from 80 per cent pure new British Wool with eight natural tones including Lulworth, Corfe and Wareham. As well as a fantastic range of shades to choose from, Purbeck offers three pile widths available from multi-purpose to luxury weight. Available now, both ranges come in standard 4m and 5m widths

Top firms join Foundation In a major boost for the Carpet Foundation as it enters its 14th year, Brockway Carpets and Cormar Carpets have announced that they will be joining as full manufacturer members with effect from 1st January 2013.

The new manufacturer subscriptions policy played a key part in recruiting the two manufacturers, both of whom had long been courted by the Foundation. Their joint decision will assist the Foundation as it sets about reinvigorating itself promotionally, with digital activity planned for 2013, and financially with a new fee structure for both manufacturers and retailers. It is hoped that others will follow suit on the announcement. Commenting on their decision, David Cormack, Marketing Director at Cormar said: “We firmly believe that the Carpet Foundation benefits the UK carpet industry in many ways. It enables us to have an industry voice on key matters such as the environment, safety and quality testing, as well as trading standards. In addition, the Foundation does a great job in promoting carpet favourably in the media.

However, key to our involvement, is the fact that the Carpet Foundation has become a vehicle to promote Independent Flooring Retailers and Buying Groups in the UK. As we are a 100% British carpet manufacturer, with the majority of our business with Independents, it obviously makes sense for Cormar to endeavour to support them and joining the Foundation will only strengthen that bond.”

Charles Annable, Brockway Managing Director, echoed David Cormack’s comments and added: “As original founding members, it is good to be back! In addition to the promotional work the Foundation does and its support of the independent retailer, the technical expertise we can garner from them and the increasing importance of environmental matters influenced our decision. Regulatory compliance is going to be key going forward, particularly in the markets we are seeking to operate in, and the experience and help that the Carpet Foundation can provide in this area will be invaluable to us.” John Duncan, Chairman of the Carpet Foundation, was understandably delighted: “I am thrilled that Brockway and Cormar are joining. It is a real bonus for us and sends out a strong message to the industry at large. It is no secret that it has been a challenging period for us but we have remodelled ourselves and will emerge leaner, fitter and stronger and ideally positioned to build on the hard work of the previous 13 years. We have exciting and innovative plans in place for 2013 and this is the perfect way to start a new year.”

Fast track hat trick Coventry-based business UK Flooring Direct is proving that its clearly focused online business model is paying off after the incredible achievement of receiving a third listing in the Sunday Times Fast Track 100 in as many years.

With a sales growth of 54.23% compared to 2011, UK Flooring Direct has comfortably earned its ranking of number 87 in the list of top 100 privately owned companies, and is still the only flooring retailer to appear on the list. First appearing in 2010 and again in 2011, the 2012 inclusion is clearly the icing on the cake.

“This is a major achievement for us and proves that our online business model is continuing to head in the right direction and deliver us phenomenal sales despite the tough times of the recession,” comments Tim Brennan, managing director, UK Flooring Direct.

“We have steadily grown the business since 2004, and to achieve not only one, but three inclusions on the prestigious Sunday Times Fast Track 100 list is testament to the hard work of our entire team. We are 100% committed to increasing our growth throughout the coming years, while still providing the exceptional service that we are famous for to our loyal customer base.”

The Sunday Times Fast Track 100 has been published annually since 1997, and is the definitive league table of Britain’s private companies with the fastest-growing sales. Sponsored by Virgin, this list has become regarded as the most reliable and comprehensive of its kind.
