Flooring Factsheet Adhesives

Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED

WOVEN

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.

Level loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality. Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms. CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas. Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms. CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home. Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.

Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

Regular Maintenance Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur. Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers! Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet. Use only WOOLSAFE approved products WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.

The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.

Periodic Cleaning When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company. If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE approved products. Look for the WOOLSAFE Mark on the bottle or package. It is best to engage the services of a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning company. To get a really expert job done entrust the work to a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. These companies are fully trained, have been in business for a considerable length of time, are members of one or more recognised professional trade associations related to the cleaning industry and have a reputation for top quality service. And they use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents on your wool carpets and rugs!

If you have a problem with a carpet or rug that requires an independent inspector, a network of carpet complaint investigators, trained and registered by The WOOLSAFE Organisation is available throughout the UK and Ireland. WOOLSAFE Registered Inspectors have extensive experience in investigating the causes for carpet complaints based on their practical involvement with carpets and rugs over many years. They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers, retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can carry out or commission tests where required, and will provide comprehensive reports. of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 8

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLES

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

SHEDDING

The original carpet tile

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPS

This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

• shedding • pulled loops

SPROUTING

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

SHADING

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

STATIC

Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOL

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair.

Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.

A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

an informed choice.

THE STOCKLISTS January 2014

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

PILE REVERSAL (SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONS

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.

The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet.

The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

FLATTENING

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

SOILING

Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or

any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave

sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust

- which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

britishwool.org.uk campaignforwool.org THE STOCKLISTS January 2014

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 17

Final preparations for DOMOTEX 2014 At the time of writing we are very busy preparing for DOMOTEX 2014. There are a large number of innovations we will be introducing during DOMOTEX. Additional to the new synthetic and wool carpets that we are very happy to show you, are two other innovations being officially launched at the show. The most important innovation is the world’s first 100% SBR-free carpet backing. Our new backing is based completely on vinyl acetate ethylene (VAE) and is the ideal solution for those who are environmentally conscious. At the same time, VAE provides a number of advantages to the final product. These include lower emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), reduced flammability and an odourless carpet. Come and see (and smell!) the difference at our stand.

The British Wool column British Wool heads to Hannover for Domotex British Wool has joined forces with the UKTI to attend Domotex 2014 and promote British Wool for carpets and rugs.

Putting the strength of the fibre at the centre of its activity, the BWMB is keen to emphasize the difference that British Wool can make to carpet. Grown on over sixty different breeds of sheep in the United Kingdom, it has earned a reputation within the carpet sector for being the strongest real wool for flooring.

The naturally bulky wool which is particularly robust is attributed to the way the wool has responded to the temperate weather conditions and which over centuries has created sheep breeds that grow a more hardy and springy fleece. This provides instant ‘bounce-back’ despite constant compression and which then offers less flattening in carpets and longer appearance retention.

Image, courtesy of Ulster Carpets, shows Hari’s Bar, Hard Day’s

Night Hotel, Liverpool. Design: LSM. Photography: Simon Stanmore. “Strength and durability are absolutely paramount to carpets in situ whether that is a hotel or a personal home. British Wool is all about performance on the floor which is where it matters most. A carpet takes a lot of punishment and it needs to look good every day and British Wool is an excellent fibre choice,” says Tim Booth, marketing manager at the British Wool Marketing Board.

British Wool is in Hall 6, stand C11 and is appearing in association with UK Trade and Investment.

OneWool nomination from Brintons OneWool nominations continue to come in and show the many diverse and excellent products available in wool. This month we have the fabulous Bell Twist Collection from Brintons Carpets. This Collection is a superior quality range which has truly stood the test of time. With 230 years of experience Brintons is proud to call itself a British brand, and with the wool from one in ten British sheep ending up in a Brintons carpet, these beautiful floor coverings continue to be the sustainable and renewable choice. Following extensive colour and trends research of both home interiors and fashion developments, the Bell Twist palette includes over 60 colours. This Wilton carpet is woven by Brintons in the UK using their tried and tested 80% wool, 20% nylon blend. Launched 45 years ago, Bell Twist is their most enduring range and remains the market leader. Las Vegas launch for Campaign for Wool’s new branding

Jam Jar star

Designer Contracts, the UK’s largest flooring supplier to the new build sector, has donated flooring to a community, not-for-profit cinema, set up to provide affordable tickets to the young, old and disadvantaged. The Jam Jar Cinema, based in Whitley Bay, is owned and run by volunteers and has benefited from carpets donated by Designer Contracts for the main cinema area and stairs, presenting film-buffs with a comfortable and professional environment to enjoy a movie. The cinema takes its name from the days when cinema owners were encouraged to take jam jars as payment for entry when times were tough during the depression of the 1920’s and 30’s. Times are still tough and the cinema will discount a ticket when presented with a used, clean jam jar. Said Peter Kelsey, md at Designer Contracts: “We are delighted to have been able to support such a great organisation. “It has been interesting to see how a by-gone era has been of inspiration when creating the cinema.” www.jamjarcinema.com

Luxury for leisure centre

The new minimum preparation, maximum performance smoothing underlayment from F. Ball and Co. Ltd., has been used in the recent refurbishment of a contemporary leisure centre café, in Winchester. To begin the installation, the Flooring Division at Hampshire Interiors Limited, conducted a moisture test to investigate the damp and moisture levels present in the subfloor. The results revealed that the floor was suitably dry to continue without the need to install a waterproof surface membrane, therefore, a 3mm application of Stopgap 1200 Pro was installed directly onto the existing subfloor. Utilising the latest cement technology, Stopgap 1200 Pro has been specially designed for use directly over old adhesive residues, including bitumen and carpet tile tackifiers, to provide flooring contractors with a professional, cost-effective solution to challenging floors, without the need for mechanical removal or priming. The latex-free, no ammonia smoothing underlayment achieves fast setting and drying times for preparing sound internal subfloors. Stopgap 1200 Pro has a working time of 20 minutes, a walk-on time of just 60 minutes and as it is ready to receive new floor coverings from four hours, an entire flooring installation can be completed in the same day. Andy Rogers of Hampshire Interiors Limited said: “The F. Ball technical representatives have such a good knowledge of how to use the products and are really straightforward to deal with, so we know that we’ll always get the backup that we need to guarantee a great job.”

Flower on Flooring

by Dennis Flower

Gains from the grain The ability of laminate flooring to replicate other materials to a high degree of accuracy has seen it become a highly popular choice in the UK’s homes and business locations. The benefits of laminate flooring are well known throughout our industry and it has established a reputation as an option that is easy to install, while offering a wide range of choice to match the needs of home owners and businesses. Many will remember that its growth in popularity lead to the DIY chain stores joining the market, resulting in high levels of competition, typically at the lower end of the price range. Independent retailers therefore adjusted their focus to the higher end products, using the opportunity to further enhance their reputation as suppliers of quality merchandise and further emphasising the benefits of high levels of customer service.

The result of the above is that the UK therefore has an established supply chain for laminate flooring product. The inclusion of scratch resistance has further increased the attraction with end users, allowing it be considered for use in a wider range of settings, with further encouragement derived by the inclusion of long-term warranties. One of its most popular assets is the ability of laminate flooring to provide a realistic timber decors, due to the effective representation of wood grain. The improvement of jointing techniques has also increased over the years and this has been another positive factor with end users.

The replication of wood grains continues to be well received by consumers and this looks set to remain as the most popular choice for some time to come.

Evidence of this can be seen within the choices offered by UK Flooring Direct, which states that its Series Woods 10mm Antique V Groove option is one of the UK’s best selling laminates. The company attributes this to an appealing mix of aesthetics, practicality and affordable pricing, the combination of which ensures it remains a consistently popular choice.

Oak leads the laminates from UK Flooring Direct

“The weathered look of the Antique Oak flooring shows warm colour and characteristic wood grain markings,” the company says, “both highly in demand for adding subtle interest and a cosy touch to contemporary homes.” The company finds that classic oak is “still reigning supreme as the favourite wood flooring on the market,” further stating that its Antique Oak product offers an updated look thanks to the framing effect of the bevelled plank edges. Additionally, the Series Woods laminates offer a highly affordable option for homeowners that are increasingly planning more ambitious renovation projects, as well as looking to save costs with DIY installations. “It is a flexible flooring option, as the heavy domestic grade laminate brings great performance and aesthetics equally suited to kitchens, living rooms and home offices,” the company says.

Quick-Step is another long-established supplier within this market, which states that year after year, its designers create leading floor designs, inspired by the latest trends in the world of flooring, interior design, fashion and architecture.

Its creative process is based on an extensive range of collected information, used by the Quick-Step designers to decide which new products will be developed. Following this, the original planks, which serve as the basis for the laminate floors, are selected with considerable care. The process involves a high degree of inspection for each plank, with detailed considerations ensuring that each one has the correct colour, structure and finish. “This results in a floor that is finished down to the very smallest details. Our passion in creating beautiful floors gives every floor a great story,” the company commented. It seems unlikely that the popularity of wood finishes within laminate flooring will change in the immediate future. There may well be technological developments in the future that impact on this, but these could also serve to further enhance the current situation.

Quick-Step is driven by on-trend design

Loss of a pioneer and a ‘magical man’: Neville Cormack

Neville Cormack OBE, chairman of Cormar Carpets and one of the UK carpet industry’s leading figures, has died aged 83. A pioneer of tufted carpets in Britain, Neville was managing director and then chairman of Greenwood & Coope Limited, better known as Cormar Carpets, based in Bury. The business started in 1956 when the first tufting machines came to Britain and under Neville's leadership, Cormar became one of the UK's most successful carpet manufacturers. Neville joined Greenwood and Coope in 1949, the company founded by his father in 1924. Originally the company supplied bindings and felts to the shoe and slipper trade in the Rossendale Valley. Then in 1956 he founded Cormar Carpets and tufting began at Nunn Hills Mill, Stacksteads, with the first machines producing 54” wide tufted carpet. During his lifetime Cormar has thrived and expanded to the two mills operating today in Lancashire - Brookhouse Mill, Greenmount and Holme Mill in Ramsbottom, where 23 machines produce over nine million sq metres of carpet a year. Elected chairman of the Tufted Carpet Manufacturer’s Association in 1969, Neville was a prominent and highly respected member of the UK carpet industry and led Cormar Carpets for 57 years. As a leading local businessman he was the founder, chairman and director of the Rossendale Enterprise Trust and chairman of the Rossendale Industrial Society. In 1987 he was awarded the OBE for his services to industry. Neville passed away peacefully at his home in Rossendale, on Sunday December 8. He leaves his wife Betty, three children - Helen, John and David - and five grandchildren. Cormar MD David Judge commented: “As a man, Neville had great humility. He had the ability to speak to a lord and lady as easily as the common man. He was a magical man, it was a pleasure to have known him for 20 years. He was very active and carried on his involvement in the company throughout his retirement.” A service of thanksgiving will be held at St Anne's Church, Tottington in January, 2014, details to be announced.

DOMOTEX 2014 • January11-14

Destination Domotex Innovation and inspiration from ‘must-see’ products for 2014 ‘Bringing the floor to the fore’ is the focus of Domotex - the industry’s greatest show on earth which opens in Germany later this month. Some 1,400 companies from 60 nations will converge on the Hannover Exhibition Center from January 11 to 14 to showcase their latest products and new collections. Domotex picks up on key trends and innovations and internationally sets the tone in flooring as an intrinsic element of interior design. Domotex is a global business platform which hosts and features the entire world of flooring markets. Its exhibitors can expect to encounter some 40,000 trade visitors from more than 80 countries. Key UK players this year include: Balterio, British Wool, Brockway, Carpets, Carpenter Underlay, Cavalier, Cormar, F Ball, F&X Carpet, Foxi, Interfloor, Earthwerks, McThree, Edel Telenzo and Wools of New Zealand. “Domotex has a one-of-a-kind lineup in store for its international trade audience,” said Dr. Jochen Köckler as the responsible Managing Board member at Deutsche Messe, the company which organizes and stages Domotex. “All the market leaders in each of the show’s product segments will be there. Our exhibitors and visitors are in for a highly innovative and very international showcase in January.” The new Innovations@Domotex showcase at Domotex will set the agenda. “It’s about new things, of course, but it’s also about distinct improvements of existing details as well as practical solutions and ideas,” explains Stefan Diez, the industrial and product designer who led the Innovations@Domotex initiative. “The selected innovations encapsulate the essence of Domotex and direct visitors’ attention to the must-see products on show in the exhibition halls.” Bringing the floor to the fore The Innovations@Domotex areas will also feature a platform for expert dialogue plus an extensive program of round-table discussions. Known as the Innovations@Domotex Talks, the roundtable discussions on each of the fair’s four days. International architects, interior designers and product designers will use the discussions to present and exchange views on creative visions, new developments and stunning applications involving floor coverings. The primary focus of the talks will be on floor coverings as a core element of interior design. The character of interior spaces is determined to a very large extent by the materiality of their floors. The talks will explore a number of topics, including the changes in various flooring application areas wrought by societal trends, resource scarcity and technological developments, and reactions to those changes. Other key topics relate to the challenges facing the flooring industry in terms of recycling methods and certification programs and the role of floor coverings in the future. Visitors will be able to join in these discussions. The talks will be set up in such a way that the immediate context of the innovations on show in the Areas will foster dialogue between exhibitors and visitors, thereby making Domotex a vital knowledge-sharing and networking platform.

“The latest design highlights, spectacular patterns and eye-popping materials – Domotex is taking its trailblazing focus to a whole new level.”

Not to be missed in Hannover will be the special display zones – the Innovations@DOMOTEX areas in halls 6, 9 and 17. These areas have been designed by the internationally acclaimed German architect Jürgen Mayer H. The idea is that visitors looking for ideas and inspiration will be able to head straight to these special areas for a condensed look at the hottest innovations. From there, they will be directed to the featured vendors’ exhibition stands where they can find out more about the products that have caught their attention. “Only at Domotex can visitors explore and discover all the latest innovations with such convenience and ease,” explains Dr. Köckler. “The latest design highlights spectacular patterns and eye-popping materials – Domotex is taking its trailblazing focus to a whole new level.” www.domotex.de from The Stocklists

Wools of New Zealand’s Domotex is an integral part of the organisation’s marketing activity and they have taken more space on their stand B 12 in Hall 5 to showcase their offer and to give greater exposure to their partners. There are three focal points on the striking stand – the Laneve studio that will display new and existing Laneve ranges; a Styling Studio that will show their predictions for 2015 colours. In an innovative move, these colours will be shown in carpet form in both cut pile and loop pile; finally there is an area dedicated to ‘Innovations’, the flagship initiative of the show organizers which Wools of New Zealand has firmly embraced and which shows off their entries to the competition in fitted carpet. The main stand carpets are stunning and striking. The first is a print made by Halbmond which is inspired by the magnificent tiled floors of Italy’s great palazzos and villas and interprets the style of the textile and fashion designer Emilio Pucci. The second is a three colour 100% wool loop pile Wilton produced by New Franco Belge which is an abstract mosaic frieze design. Both are highly original and decorative. The stand is completed by nine co-exhibitor areas. The manufacturers include: Crucial Trading who will feature their statement wool offerings in a palette of vibrant shades, textures and patterns. Brockway celebrate their 50th anniversary and take the opportunity to show their full range of wool rich tufted carpets as well as their special dye service. They will also be trialling new developments and concepts. Flock will be launching three new flatweave ranges to complement their contemporary broadloom collection. Classics is a reworking of traditional chevrons and herringbones; Contemporary are clean, defined geometric designs in elegant colourways while Retro uses retro graphic patterns in contrasting colours. Cormar is a first time exhibitor at Domotex and will be majoring on their strong selection of wool twists and wool loop pile ranges. Cavalier, who are actively seeking new agents for their expanding export division, will be showing for the first time exciting new products including the new ‘Couture Collection’ for 2014. They will also be illustrating their Custom graphics capabilities. Joanna Ramsden, Wools of New Zealand creative manager and the mastermind of this wool centrepiece said: “We are really looking forward to a good show. Designed to be an ‘underlay for modern living’, Midas 12 has been launched in response to the success of Midas 8 and 10. The 12mm underlay is luxurious while being competitively priced. Carpenter’s commitment to recycling and the environment led to the launch last year of its underlay recycling scheme, which is a UK first. Since its launch last summer the scheme has grown rapidly and now operates in 22 regions, including Scotland. The company produces 14 ranges of PU underlay for the domestic, commercial and marine markets, with all products being made from recycled material and being fully recyclable at the end of life. F&X invests in smarter future F&X Carpet is a Chinese based company owned and founded by Mr. Wang Yulin, a keen conservationist, who started the business over 10 years ago. From the humble means of collecting plastic bottles and selling them on to recycling companies to now owning his own recycling company which is totally self-integrated. “From bottle to carpet” the company collects bottles from all over the world, recycling them into clean plastic flakes then extruding the yarn and tufting into luxurious Polyester carpets. With the development of a new recycled felt backing, some of F&X Carpets’ products are now 99% recyclable which is good news for the planet and the pocket!! Over the past 10 years Wang has never stopped investing, he has now completed that supply chain - scouring the wool, hank & stock dying, 24 woollen carding machines & 25 tufting machines, all of these make wool and wool blend carpets backed on one of the three 4 & 5m backing machines the company owns. In May this year Wang invested $6 million through the purchasing of more equipment including 24 cabling machines & 10 superbar heat setting machines from American company Gulistan, giving F&X the capability to produce over 20 million square metres of Polypropylene and PET Carpets. All this will be based in a $30 million new development in Xining, a mountain region of the Himalayas, in the centrer of China. F&X have not only invested in machines but also in people. The factory has many European, American and Oceanic along with a team of designers working in both his factories in Hangzhou and Xining, some of them will be at Domotex next year. T 07976 607657

WOW – wool wants a clean fight! Leading wool brands are looking for a clean fight with polypropylene to balance the argument on cleanability – and it’s personal! With a WOW campaign – that’s the Wool Owners Warranty – natural fibre is fighting back after years of PP campaigning on bleach cleanability with their longer and longer stain free guarantees. The WOW factor that they hope will win confidence with consumers is a free personal visit with every purchase from a carpet maintenance expert from the WoolSafe Organisation. This expert will also give them a free trigger spray spot remover and tell the owner how to look after their new carpet and keep it free of stains. If the consumer can’t shift a stain, they can call their personal WOW expert who will visit and remove the stain for them free of charge – or have the carpet professionally cleaned for them if they can’t. The wool brands behind the campaign are Mr Tomkinson and Gaskell Wool Rich, Kingsmead, Georgian, Manx Carpets, Kersaint Cobb, Crucial Trading, Stoddard and Clarendon. The British Wool Marketing Board and Wools of New Zealand are fully supporting the initiative. The campaign which launches this month is led by Mike Dobson of Mr Tomkinson and Gaskell Wool Rich. “The industry has never seen anything like this and we aim to redress the balance of the argument that has seen such strong promotion of bleach cleanability in polypropylene carpets. “The idea was borne out of frustration that wool was not getting a fair hearing,” he said. “In practice, 99% of all stains can be totally removed from wool carpets and without having to use an aggressive substance like bleach in your living room! The 1% that won’t shift would be an issue for polypropylene too.

Protect your wool carpet from lifes little disasters! -9,, ^HYYHU[` VăLY from Gaskell Woolrich

“Many words have been written about the benefits of wool but this is taking the message to a new level with a personal service that is proactive and positive,” said Mike. Wool carpet purchasers will register online to get their warranty certificate and they will be contacted by a locally named individual from Woolsafe who will then arrange to visit. The warranty can be renewed every year if the consumer has the carpet professionally cleaned by WoolSafe at the end of the period – giving the householder another year of personal stain removal service.

The campaign group is investing £50,000 in the initiative initially and says they there is no increase in pricing to cover this – the returns should come through increased business, they say, with retailers standing to benefit from their margin on higher value sales.

An example of the in-store posters for the campaign.

Martin West of Kingsmead, whose launch of the top quality Scottish wool carpet Highland Fleece at Harrogate was a key event of 2013, commented: “WOW is the most important initiative in wool retailing for many years. This campaign puts the confidence back into selling wool and gives retailers the opportunity to trade up consumers in the knowledge that they have the backing of WoolSafe, the best wool care people in the business.”

Appley new year for Recofloor

Recofloor, the UK’s national vinyl flooring recycling scheme, has won a Gold Award in the international Green Apple Environment Awards. The annual awards, organised by The Green Organisation, celebrate Britain’s greenest companies, councils and communities.

Retail recognition

Staff at a leading carpets and flooring retailer in Chesterfield are celebrating their success after scooping an award recognising their retail excellence.

Founded in 2009 by UK flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor, the scheme competed against more than 500 other nominations to take the top Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice for its work in transforming attitudes towards waste flooring within the industry and encouraging more efficient use of resources in all types of UK organisations.

T Nutt & Sons Limited received a ‘Highly Commended’ accolade in the first-ever Retail Excellence category of the Midlands Family Business Awards. The multi-award-winning company, based in Clay Cross, is run by David, Keven and Patrick Nutt, and was founded in 1869 by their great grandfather Thomas Nutt.

Carla Eslava, Recofloor’s Project Officer, collected the trophy at a presentation ceremony in The House of Commons, London, on November 11. As a result of this success, Recofloor will also be considered to represent the UK in the European Business Awards for the Environment.

It employs 12 staff, of which seven are part of the Nutt family. The firm is a popular supplier and fitter of carpets, wooden floors, vinyl’s and laminates. Its customer base is scattered across the Midlands, but has repeat clients across the country.

Commenting on the award win, Carla said: “We’re delighted and honoured to win this award, which recognises both our tremendous achievements in diverting rising amounts of flooring waste from landfill, as well as the considerable team effort throughout the flooring sector supply chain to make it happen.

David Nutt, MD, said: “We are thrilled with our award, and would like to thank the judges for selecting us for this accolade which we’re all very proud of. Our philosophy is to put quality before quantity to ensure customer satisfaction at all times, and this has been passed down from generation to generation.”

Feature: Associated Carpet Group

Power to the people! Retailers work together to mind their own businesses If there are some who suspect that buying group membership means surrendering control for the greater good, Associated Carpet Group offers the antidote.

“No interference guaranteed” says the sticker on their brochure and ACG’s Richard Moore is something of a freedom fighter for High Street independence. “Our approach gives retailers the self confidence to get the price they want for a product without looking over their shoulder all the time,” he says. ACG is a non-profit making organisation and its 216 members, who have 266 stores between them, own the Group. “This gives us extra integrity – we are all doing it for the right reasons,” he says. “We’re very clear about the way it works. We fund the Group from a subscription and members make their own mind up about whether they get value for money from us. They benefit directly from the discounts and the rebates go straight to them – in other words, the retailers are trading directly with the manufacturers they want to.” The way buying groups fund themselves varies from one to another and is sometimes a mixture of member subscription, small retained margin on discounted prices and/or a percentage of rebates. ACG in comparison is a low cost operation and as a result we can meet running costs from subscription which presently is set at £825 per year. After that's paid, all the benefits of discounted trade terms go straight to the retailers as do all the supplier annual rebates with direct invoicing between the retailer and manufacturer. ACG looks to keep it simple and straight forward! As a result, the decision to join the buying group is easy – can you make more profit than £825 by being a member - yes or no? See the panels below for examples (and these don’t include the benefit of the discounts).

Retailer/Member Scenario A:

Total turnover with supplies Rebates earned Promotional commission earned Total rebate and commissions earned

We met ACG member Richard Creaser of Scarborough Flooring at the National Flooring Show in September last year (pictured centre with Richard Moore and Lynne Dootson of ACG) and asked what he thought about ACG:

“They are very friendly

people and give us a lot of support, and the rebates are great. All the suppliers seem to rate them.”

£302,584.49 £7,465.70 £936.47 £8,402.17

Retailer/Member Scenario B: Total turnover with supplies Rebates earned Promotional commission earned Total rebate and commissions earned

£471,226.76 £11,368.01 £2,878.22 £14,246.23

“Our priority is to negotiate the best discounted price first from the manufacturer,” says Richard. “In addition to this, we have negotiated individual percentage rebates with all our listed Group suppliers which are paid directly from our suppliers to members. It is simple, we actively encourage our members to focus on the suppliers that support ACG and in return the member earns more rebate and makes better margins. ” So margin is the main thing about buying groups but the other big issue here is protection – from retail park competitors and the web. ACG offers two parts to that protection. Firstly you get to offer competitive prices anyhow because of your group buying power and secondly you can shelter part of your turnover behind an own-brand strategy which consumers cannot price-match with your competitors. continued opposite... 60 January 2014

approach gives retailers the self confidence to get the price they want for a “Our product without looking over their shoulder all the time.”

Own-brand is only as good as the products and presentation provided and here ACG has sought to excel with its Smart Choice label – a collection of 150 ranges across all the styles and price points with many exclusive offers. All backed by class-leading point-of-sale display and merchandising. “Protection is a number one issue for retailers,” says Richard. “De-branding works really well and we’ve focused on providing a first class collection for our members, some of whom have gone up to 80% own brand as a result.” The ultra smart red and black design of Smart Choice is highly professional and the sophisticated POS units with quality graphics and LED lighting are subsidised to reduce costs. Promotional materials such as advertising and flyers are also linked to the distinctive design. In the business of margin protection, the issue of the internet is always part of the discussion and ACG is in good shape to take the battle to the enemy! – upgrading their own internet presence and offering members a classy service to create their own websites. The site at www.smartercarpets.com has recently been overhauled in some style and promotes itself as “the home of affordable carpets”. Apart from looking good and offering lots of product information, the site has a store finder for ACG members and a new sampling request service on over 1,000 products online. Memorable merchandising makes ACG’s own brand live up to its “We want the web to work for our people and have invested in a highly ‘smart’ marketing message. professional web presence which consumers can find quickly when they search on the net”, says Richard. “The site is all about putting consumers in touch with retailers and the new site is already generating real leads. Apart from the sales opportunity this presents, it also creates a new relationship for the retailer with a customer who may come back again and again.” Lots of other initiatives keep things interesting for members – seasonal promotions, voucher offers, special campaigns and specialized services such as finance. The Group offers support and discounted rates on credit/debit card transactions as well as special rates for membership of bira (British Independent Retailers Association) who specialize in Legal support and Insurance. But the Group also has a very personal touch. Richard Moore commented: “There is a lot of fraternity in being part of a buying group. We keep many of our meetings small and local with nine regional events. This gives us the chance to talk to each other about what people want and what we can do better to improve their business. These sessions are very well attended and we all get a lot out of them.” ACG’s commitment to delivering exactly what retailers want has paid off. The group, which will celebrate it’s 30th anniversary next year, is now one of the most respected in the sector and has grown over 50% in the last four years. “I want the retailer to take control of what they want to sell,” says Richard. Ultimately, the retailer himself is the most important brand his business has. We recognize that and then build on it. We want people to take control of their own business – they can take as much or as little support from the Group as they need. Outbreak of optimism There’s an outbreak of optimism in flooring sales as manufacturers reported stronger fourth quarter’s trading before Christmas and retailers predict a better year in 2014.

38% increased sales in 2013 44% held prices in 2013

In a survey of our readers, 67% of respondents said they expected the new year to be better than 2013 with about a fifth of them predicting sales growth in excess of 10%. Only 11% were pessimistic about prospects.

67% expect a better 2014

A third of our retailers said that fourth quarter sales in 2013 were “much better” than expectations.

56% plan price increases this year

The British Retail Consortium’s latest report showed that Autumn growth in sales started to slow later in the season. David McCorquodale of KPMG who sponsors the report commented: “"It remains tough out there on the high street, with sales growth slow but steady." Neil Valentine of Furlong Flooring said: “With the optimism in the new-build sector and clear signs of some progress in consumer confidence, I can only see growth ahead in 2014.” “I see 2014 as a year of opportunity,” says Martin West of Kingsmead. “I believe it will be the year when sales of wool carpet will reverse the trend and increase in line with the consumer feel good factor.”

The Stocklists polled 1202 retailers throughout the UK during December 2013. Replies and comments are recorded anonymously. Many thanks to all those who took part.

Last year was one of the toughest of the recession, says Graham Harris at Manx Carpets, but finished very strongly with a surge in sales for the company’s latest products. “There is certainly an upturn across the interiors market with people prepared to spend more on their homes,” he said. “It’s all about consumer confidence and we’re optimistic about the prospects.” Carpetright reported poor figures in mid-December with a 2% fall in revenues to the end of October while UK sales were flat. Lord Harris said the UK carpet market is down 25pc on its pre-crash peaks but the Carpetright boss said there are “a lot of replacement carpets needed” because homeowners have deferred purchases and he is approaching the new year with “cautious optimism”, despite the fall in sales. In our ‘state-of-the-market’ survey with readers, almost 40% of our retailers said that 2013 trading was better than 2012, with stronger growth in the second half of the year after a slow start. 44% did not increase their prices during the year and two-thirds said margins had not improved but in a sign of growing confidence, 56% said they expected to put prices up a little in the year ahead.

Victoria to acquire Westex for £16m+

Victoria PLC are to take over Westex Carpets for £16m, with further payments if key profit targets are met. "Westex is one of the finest carpet manufacturers in the UK and I am very pleased Victoria has been able to reach an agreement with the directors, all of whom will be staying with the business for a minimum period of five years," said Victoria Executive Chairman Geoff Wilding. The proposal was announced last month and Victoria shareholders gave the deal their backing at a special meeting in London on December 13. It has been confirmed that there will be no change in Victoria's Board and the company’s statement added: "the enlarged Group will benefit from a strengthened senior management team, with a clear and focused strategy for further turnaround and growth." Westex will continue to operate its own brands within Victoria PLC and there will be no changes to the existing sales, production and adminstration operations which are based in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire. A privately owned company, Westex have been making carpets in the UK for more than 35 years and has an established reputation for top quality 80/20 twists including the leading Ultima Collection and for luxury 100% wool ranges such as eighth gauge Opulence and the Ascot and Windsor saxony collections. The company also offers a bespoke dye service. The acquisition is of Globesign Limited of whom Westex is a wholly owned subsidiary. Globesign reported record turnover of £17.5m in the year to March 2, 2013, with profits of £3.7m No shares in Victoria PLC are being issued in respect of the acquisition. Victoria PLC has recently announced a return to profit in their half-yearly results to the end of September 2013 - as reported in the December issue of The Stocklists.

Hotter dates for Harrogate!

Harrogate exhibitor bookings are already ahead of 2013 levels after organisers changed the dates for the national Flooring Show following consultation with the industry. The calendar conspired to place the show’s opening date on August 31 based on it’s usual slot at the Harrogate Exhibition Centre but now organisers have met with trade exhibitors and agreed a new Sunday start on September 21st, closing on Tuesday 23rd. Wendy Adams, event director, commented: “The revised dates are still at the heart of the retail buying window, but by moving away from the end of the holiday season we give breathing space to trade visitors and exhibitors. “The high level of interest from 2013 exhibitors and a healthy number of enquiries from lapsed exhibitors at the show was very encouraging, and we have made great progress in turning these into firm 2014 bookings. We’re well ahead of where we were this time last year, and we will continue to introduce new features and content, as well as ensuring the show meets top international standards,” Adams continued. The news counters criticism after the 2013 show that key manufacturers are failing to support the UK’s only national flooring event that is open to all. The organisers are conscious that more key exhibitors are essential to the long-term success of the show and are working hard on new initiatives to encourage more support. Many manufacturers cited high stand costs at Harrogate as a reason for non-attendance but the national show is substantially cheaper for exhibitors than the Interiors event at the NEC and the international

Cross dock meets demand

Domotex show in Hannover, both of which take place later this month and their stand space is over 30% more expensive. In 2013, the event attracted 120 exhibiting brands and 2,300 trade visitors from 17 countries. In a survey of readers of The Stocklists in November, 66% said Harrogate was worth the visit but 41% said more manufacturers needed to exhibit. Paul Stott, Managing Director of Media Generation Group Ltd, which forms part of the new show management with Wendy Adams Associates, said: “We took over a struggling event in the depths of the recession, but a sustained programme of investment, strong management and new content – plus some long overdue economic optimism – have stabilised things. With the support of an important group of loyal exhibitors, who all want the show to continue, and with these excellent new dates, we’re confident we now have a great platform to rebuild it to a size and stature appropriate to this important industry. Our team is very excited about the show’s prospects.” T 01423 779967 www.theflooringshow.com

To support growth in retail sales Cormar Carpets has introduced a new cross-dock distribution centre in Northampton. In time to help cope with increased demand over the autumn, the new cross-dock centre is already proving to be a success, having handled over 18,000 individual items in the three months since opening in September. The distribution centre sits alongside the company’s existing outbase depots, providing additional support to current facilities in the loading bay and cut lengths department at Cormar’s Brookhouse Mill site in Greenmount, Bury. The Northampton site is operated in conjunction with Cormar’s existing logistics partners. The depot now operates 11 vehicles each day. Customer orders are loaded in bulk on 44ft trailers in Bury to then trunk to Northampton overnight, unload and finally reload onto individual local delivery routes as normal. All Cormar ranges are produced in the UK and distributed throughout Britain and Ireland via its own delivery fleet. Said Craig Marshall, head of order channels and logistics at Cormar Carpets: “We pride ourselves on our on-time delivery performance, so wanted to make sure we had as seamless a transition as possible, with no disruption to our customers during the peak delivery period of the year. ” T 01204 881234 www.cormarcarpets.co.uk

BBC focuses on Axminster’s future

BBC Spotlight featured Axminster Carpets and the progress the company has made since April this year. The regional South West television news programme also exclusively revealed the new children’s rug range, due to be launched by Axminster Carpets in the next couple of months, as well as further areas of planned expansion for the renowned British carpeting company. The programme looked at the role the new chairman, Stephen Boyd, has played in steering the new Axminster Carpets business towards growth and long term profitability. With interviews from company staff on the shop floor and a fly on the wall glimpse at a design and development meeting with the company managing director, Josh Dutfield, and Design Director, Gary Bridge, the programme also highlighted recent business successes. The two news pieces also mentioned the appointment of two female board directors – a first for the industry; the launch of an apprentice scheme in association with Yeovil College; and a first look at the newly installed Axfelt underlay plant. Stephen Boyd said: “Everyone in the business has been working incredibly hard since April and we’re immensely proud of what we’ve achieved in the first six months. Allowing the BBC cameras into the factory gave us the chance to show the public how committed we are to building this business.” T 01297 32244 www.axminster-carpets.co.uk
