Multi-Level Loop
Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
LOOP PILE
Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.
THE STOCKLISTS March 2015
CUT PILE
Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.
saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.
Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.
shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 5

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
www.flooringone.co.uk Contact: Glenn Harding Tel: 0121 683 1426 glenn.harding@flooringone.co.uk
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,
any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see
The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 8
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents
• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.floorwise.co.uk
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!
Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 10
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.
THE STOCKLISTS March 2015
• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling
Flattening
Shedding
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Shading
Indentations
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet
SAFE
Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
DURABLE EASYCARE
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
Comfort
COMFORT
Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.
Safety
The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and new Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and new Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst new Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.
100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 17

Tiles with style
The stunning Terrazzo décor is a brand new addition to the hugely popular Tile Styles collection by Leoline. With a mineralised look that will prove a hit among those on the hunt for on-trend contemporary finishes, Terrazzo has been introduced in three colourways. From limestone through sand and into slate, Terrazzo brings a new dimension to the collection of tile and stone looks, joining last year’s introduction, Isis, as a modern look for the style conscious. Tile Styles also includes slate, concrete, terracotta and ceramic effects as well as a striking mosaic. “Tile Styles has proven itself for several years and is a firm favourite for many retailers thanks to its continued popularity with homeowners,” explains Victoria Hemelaer, product manager, Leoline. “We’ve introduced Terrazzo not so much as to overhaul the collection but instead to give it a ‘tweak’ to keep it in line with the latest trends for the home, which some currently geared to more architectural and contemporary finishes.” Now with 18 tile and mineral looks, Tile Styles is available in two, three and four-metre widths and comes packed with performance orientated features. Including Superguard for scuff and dirt protection as well as easy maintenance, Natural Look and Feel for more authenticity, added slip resistance and with Compactback for thermal insulation, underfoot comfort and noise reduction, this is a floor that will perform in every home. As part of Leoline’s Privilege family, Tile Styles comes backed with a 10-year wear guarantee and is rated for heavy domestic use. T 0800 032 3970

Mix it with Balta
Shaping spaces in the home like never before, Mix to the Max is the latest innovation from Balta Broadloom.
Shaking aside the constraints of the 50x50cm carpet tile and reimagining a highly flexible 100x25cm dimension, Mix to the Max is inspired by the format and patina of wood flooring, yet with the possibility for virtually limitless design and layout combinations, Mix to the Max is entirely fresh and refreshingly different. With underfoot comfort, thermal and acoustic insulation and resistance to wear and stains, Mix to the Max carpet planks make a more comfortable home, while nature-inspired aesthetics bring a more beautiful one too. Made from 100% StainSafe yarn for great everyday performance, the four designs in oak, maple, walnut and pine, each available in several colourways, make for different layouts with colour variety, popping tonal ascents, intermingled patterns, contrasts and highlights; with four designs and four colourways for each the choice is there for the taking. “We’ve created Mix to the Max to bring a new dimension to carpet for the home,” comments Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Broadloom. “Neatly packaged for an off-the-shelf solution, Mix to the Max allows homeowners the chance to enjoy risk-free experimentation, something other floorcoverings simply struggle to achieve. Should a combination not be working, simply lift, swap and replace. This easy replacement also comes in handy on the off chance that an area becomes stained or soiled beyond repair, just lift and replace.” Mix to the Max starts off brightly with packaging that is homeowner-friendly, easy to carry and brilliantly bold. Each box, with a revealing opening to show the texture, colour and quality inside, holds 10 carpet planks for coverage of 2.5m2. Mix to the Max can be ordered in various combinations across designs and colours from a minimum of 120m2. Mix and match four designs from a minimum of 30m2 per plank and in multiples of 10m2 for the order that is perfect for you. T +32 56 62 22 11 from The Stocklists

Certified success
Polyflor is pleased to announce that it has obtained BES 6001 certification, demonstrating compliance with a recognised responsible sourcing scheme as certified by the BRE.
Polyflor is the first flooring manufacturer to be awarded BES 6001, notably achieving a ‘Very Good’ rating (with ratings ascending from Pass; Good; Very Good to Excellent). Now in its 3rd issue, the BES 6001 framework standard for Responsible Sourcing sets out requirements under three main headings: Organisational Management; Supply Chain Management and Environmental and Social Responsibility Management. To meet the standard, organisations must satisfy certain compulsory elements. In addition, there are higher levels of compliance that can result in a higher performance rating being awarded. Thomas Rollo, Marketing Manager, comments: “This is a significant milestone for Polyflor. We are really pleased to achieve a BES 6001 Very Good rating, improving our overall social and environmental performance, as well as adding third party accreditation to our responsible sourcing claims. BES 6001 is an important standard and it will be extremely valuable to customers looking to procure flooring with sound environmental credentials and traceability, from socially aware and ethical suppliers.” Polyflor’s BES 6001 certification is the latest of many sustainability and corporate social responsibility credentials, sitting alongside ISO 14001; individual BRE A+ ratings; EN 15804 EPDs; Indoor Air Comfort Gold; FloorScore and Recofloor. As one of the UK’s top home interest titles, ‘House Beautiful’ magazine, gears up to reveal its Home for Life concept at this year’s London, Manchester and Glasgow Ideal Home Exhibitions, Quick-Step called upon one of its Master Installers to lend a hand during the home’s off-site construction.

Working to a tight timescale and with the need to work efficiently, quickly and with little mess, Mark and Jack were able to fit the entire area in a single day, testament to the speed of Quick-Step’s Uniclic profile and their skills. Crowning Glorie
Polyflor’s Expona Design range of luxury vinyl flooring tiles was used to create a bold black and white herringbone design, revitalising Crowning Glorie hair salon in Bristol recently.
Installed by local flooring contractor Bristol Flooring, the fitters used 46m² of Expona Design PUR luxury vinyl tiles to create this on trend statement floor. The contemporary chevron effect was created by using Expona Design flooring in the contrasting colours of Black Elm 6183 and White Oak 6185 to match the salon’s signature monochrome style. The high performance Expona Design range is ideal for use in regular footfall areas like retail and commercial environments with its 3.0mm gauge and 0.7mm wear layer. Faster, friendlier LVT
Quick-Step and Pergo are introducing their latest range of luxury vinyl tiles and planks (LVT) designed for ultra-quick installation after Unilin invested €45 million in a new, ultra-modern manufacturing plant for the development and production of LVT with a new patented drop-down technology – branded Uniclic Multifit for Quick-Step’s Livyn floors, and Perfect Fold V for Pergo floors.
The advanced technology makes the installation process extremely user-friendly. A tongue and groove click-lock system ensures a tight fit, while requiring only a minimal expansion gap. Flooring installers can simply snap the planks together using a drop-down technique, or they can insert them horizontally. Pieter Buyck, General Manager LVT at Unilin, division flooring comments on this latest innovation by Unilin: “Installers won’t need a hammer to lock the ends of the planks together. They can simply push the planks together using their thumb. The Unilin group has patented this brand new installation technology. There are a few other similar click systems, but none of them are able to match the speed and ease of installation we offer.” The ease of installation is by far not the only asset of this new product range by Quick-Step and Pergo. Comfort and easy maintenance were equally important elements in the design process. Pieter Buyck explains: “Our latest LVT flooring tiles and planks are much more scratch-resistant thanks to a highperforming coating (Scratch Guard for Quick-Step Livyn, TitanV for Pergo). The floors are smooth and warm to the touch, and offer a matt, natural-looking finish. A fully sealed surface leaves no chance to dirt or stains, and makes cleaning the tiles and planks a breeze.” Unilin’s ultramodern manufacturing site in Wielsbeke, Belgium, has the capacity to produce six million square metres annually and the location of the new plant ensures better service and short lead times. F. Ball scores at Norwich FC
Styccobond F58 rubber floorcovering adhesive from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has been used in the refurbishment of the Barclay Stand at Norwich City Football Club.
Flooring contractors, Broadland Flooring Ltd., were contracted to refurbish the 1200 m2 stand, which included a bar, toilets and turnstile area, after flooding damaged the original floor. Once the concrete floor had dried out, the contractors suitably prepared the subfloor and adhered rubber flooring tiles to create a finished floor, but then another flood damaged the newly installed tiles, necessitating Broadland Flooring’s return to the site. For a second time, the contractors conducted moisture management tests and suitably prepared the subfloor, this time using Styccobond F58 to adhere Altro Nuvola Stratus Rubber flooring tiles. Styccobond F58 has a high bond strength and strong initial tack, and is suitable for use with a wide range of rubber floorcoverings. Ben Couzens, Managing Director and owner of Broadland Flooring Ltd., said: "The difference between the results that we achieved using Styccobond F58 and the alternative adhesive that we used the first time was striking. Styccobond F58 was a lot quicker, easier to use and more effective. We use a lot of F. Ball products and this reminded me why we should continue to do so." T 01538 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk
Recycling record Diversion of carpet from landfill continues its upward trend, rising to a record-breaking 113,000 tonnes that were reused, recycled or recovered for energy in 2014, says Carpet Recycling UK. It’s an increase of 6,000 tonnes on 2013 (107,000 tonnes) representing a diversion rate of 28%. Around 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arises each year in the UK. The industry body’s success in finding alternative outlets means it has already exceeded its original goal, set in 2008, to achieve 25% diversion by 2015. Energy recovery was 73,000 tonnes (65%) of the total diversion and reuse/recycling was 40,000 tonnes (35%). The increase in energy recovery follows the general UK trend for MSW incineration as capacity increases, plus the continued strong demand from the cement industry for the benefits of carpet in SRF.
High tog Tredaire
Underlay buyers are always looking for high quality underlays that help to make the carpet “feel better, look better and last longer”, but at this time of year they want a little extra something. Increasingly consumers are preferring underlays that help to keep the room cosier.
Recycling growth in 2014 was strong in segments such as fibre recovery for felts as retailers and flooring contractors saw the benefits of capturing fitting offcuts for recycling. Carpet tiles were another success story with more than 1.2 million or 330,000m² collected and diverted from landfill in 2014. CRUK Director Laurance Bird praised the ongoing efforts and commitment across the entire supply chain in maintaining the momentum and development of new outlets and markets for all types of carpet waste. Tredaire’s high tog PU underlays are proving very popular. With tog ratings up to 3.1 they have a range of products to help residential and commercial buyers maximise their heat insulation and help to control their heating bills. Tredaire Dreamwalk (3.13 tog), Sensation (2.89 tog) and Softwalk (2.69 tog) are part of the recently upgraded Seventh Heaven range of PU underlays. Steve Woodhead, Interfloor Marketing Director, says, “Not only do these Tredaire underlays give best in class heat insulation they’ve been upgraded to give resellers an even stronger proposition to sell. With their stronger, white, Textron backings, and more vibrant colours, they provide an outstanding solution that is easier to sell than many conventional underlays.” T 01706 238 810

A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!
“The wool industry relates the non-combustible story of wool often - but perhaps not often enough. This impressive benefit of wool is one the commercial sector has long recognised. Public buildings need to be safe. But... so do our homes.”
The Living Legacy of Wool Carpet
Smoke detectors were first made widely available to households in the UK during the 1970s and 1980s and despite their obvious benefits took a while to be taken up by the great British public. Now they are commonly installed, which probably plays a part in the drop in fatalities - 275 people died in England in house fires in 2013-14 - a drop of 39% from ten years before. That said, there was still 170,000 fires in England alone - the detail of what happened at these dwellings is unknown to us and many non-fatal injuries resulted. Last week a short news video clipping was sent across and showed a fire department smoke alarm research test which had been carried out in North Carolina, USA. It focused on the amount of time you have to safely escape a house when a fire breaks out.
Beautiful British Wool Carpet of the Month
Brockway’s Lakeland Herdwick is a heavy duty carpet range of pure distinction. It is the only textured loop pile carpet range to use 100 per cent Herdwick wool, one of Britain's hardiest breeds of hill sheep. Lakeland Herdwick carpets are inspired by the rugged and exceptional qualities of the breed, which was awarded protected status by the European Commission in 2013. The range is perfect for people looking for a natural effect carpet as it features 18 natural tone colourways in two very distinctive designs. It is highly versatile too, being available in 1m, 4m and 5m broadloom and highly durable carpet thanks to the natural resilience of this breed. It is also available as a twist pile option called Lakeland Twist.
Setting fire to two almost identical rooms - room 1 described as a Legacy room, with furnishings made with natural materials including wool and cotton and room 2 described as a Modern room, with furnishings composed of synthetics. At just over two minutes the fire in room 1 is tiny. At 3.22 mins, the fire in room 2 flashes with fire, everything is burning and the space was so hot, it could not sustain life. Room 1 - the room with wool in it - does not reach a flashpoint until 29.16 minutes. Quite shockingly it shows that you have under four minutes from hearing your alarm to escape from a home that is furnished with synthetic materials. Scary but true. So you really should get up and get out without delay, no looking for those prized possessions.
I witnessed the dripping remnants of a synthetic jacket and the gaping blackened hole of a manmade bed and bedding destroyed within seconds at a live fire test in June 2014. The visual reality of instant disaster was almost unbelievable in the ease in which it took hold and its relentless speed. This new film astutely focused on not which material is best for safety but on how much time we have to escape.
Interestingly, that same day in June last year, London Fire Brigade released cautionary advice for the World Cup. This referenced data from the 2010 South African World Cup when there was a shocking 620 house fires in London during the tournament - an increase caused they say by celebrations in the home followed by a bit of cooking, a sleepy household and then a fire.
Fire officers on the North Carolina test were clear - choose your furnishings with care because families and firemen suffer and die in fire incidents. Speed is the key - you need to be faster than the fire. The real legacy of a wool home is that you have slowed down the flashpoint and bought time to survive a fire. The wool industry relates the non-combustible story of wool often - but perhaps not often enough. So here we go - wool does not easily ignite due to high water and nitrogen content - the chemistry simply does not compute and will not naturally encourage fire or flame. This impressive benefit of wool is one the commercial sector has long recognised. Public buildings need to be safe. But... so do our homes.

and why we like it...
There is always a simple dynamic style about the use of monochrome shades in a crisp stripe style. We think this colour combination shown has a masculine edge - perfect for the home office but equally an amazing carpet in a white or grey open plan space with modern decor. Made in 100% Herdwick wool too...it’s a winner! Brockway is a family owned and run business and has been designing and producing premium quality carpets in Kidderminster since 1964 take a look at their website to see other great wool products.

DOMOTEX Hannover 2015 •
Flair at the world’s best flooring fair The flair of the world’s biggest flooring fair is our focus in Part 2 of the review of innovation and trends at Domotex. Associated Weavers are accelerating their success in softness with a programme of range launches under their iSense brand which will extend the reach and add de-lustred nylon fibre and a new polypropylene offer. The number of new range launches this year also indicates growing confidence in the flooring sector with Balta (below) adding 10 new broadloom ranges and Bealieu counting out 2,045 addtional options added for the Hannover event. Wools of New Zealand continue to work closely with their partners to drive innovation in their yarn spinning into distinctively new commercial ranges while the emergence of F&X into the market with their Himalaya brand indicates a new apetite for wool. In laminates, Balterio benefits from its close attention to market trends with an overhaul of colour across their ranges including the exciting new Urban collection. See pages 46 to 57 for Part 2 of our review of the innovations at Domotex.
Starting 2015 with a bang Balta Broadloom
With 10 new ranges launched at this January’s Domotex event, Balta Broadloom certainly kicked off 2015 with a bang, bringing visitors developments across its polypropylene, wool and nylon carpet ranges.
From the wool-rich Royal Sovereign in Super (37oz), Deluxe (53oz) and Supreme (65oz) qualities to the 100% British Wool Lothian Wool Berber, Noble Heathers from the StainSafe collection and Royal Oxford using 100% X-Tron high performance yarn, Balta Broadloom used its Domotex launches to underline its status. “As Europe’s largest carpet manufacturer, Domotex marks a key launch point for our 2015 collections for markets throughout Europe,” reveals Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Broadloom. “There are few manufacturers that would have the capacity right through design, development and production to launch 10 new collections, but here at Balta we can achieve this bringing new collections into existing ranges as well as exciting new concepts such as Mix to the Max.” Royal Sovereign is available in 12 plain colours and in four and five-metre widths. A stripe design in three coordinating colours is also available in a four-metre width. As its name suggests, Lothian Wool Berber is made from 100% British Wool. In eight plain styles available in four and five-metre widths and four coordinating stripes in a four-metre width, this carpet is a beautiful take on luxurious wool carpet with a fresh and modern look. Based on the hugely successful Noble Saxony, the new Noble Heathers collection is tufted from 100% StainSafe polypropylene and comes in two backing options – synthetic or Ultratex Quick+ felt – and in two widths – four and five-metre. In 10 natural colour choices and modern, stylish greys, this carpet makes the most of StainSafe to offer a 15-year stain and 10-year wear warranties. With Pop Art you can benefit from a giant size sample book that has great impact and a fun and fresh image without taking up valuable wall space. This new colourful StainSafe stripe is certainly for the style minded and adds new dynamic in nine fabulous colourways to the popular stripe segment of the market. Royal Oxford brings a dense heavyweight Saxony pile to create a luxurious carpet for the home. Made from 100% polypropylene X-Tron high performance yarn, this plush carpet benefits from the extra resilience of a two-ply yarn, coming backed by 15-year wear and 20-year stain warranties. In 12 on-trend colours, Royal Oxford is available in four and five-metre widths. Mix to the Max gives four colours and four qualities that can be mixed to the max to give interesting and unique floor layouts. With a plank dimension of 100x25cm, it’s possible to create herringbone and parquet-style layouts in carpet. T +32 56 62 22 11

The face of things to come Associated Weavers
An obsession with softness has given Associated Weavers an enviable position in one of the industry’s strongest sectors since their launch of the iSense fibre last year. Intense product development means they are all set to build on that success in a big way in 2015. “iSense was one of the trade’s most successful ever launches,” says AW’s Steve Elliott. “The softness is superb and when the consumer touches the carpet it sells itself. The feedback from retailers on this has been incredibly positive.”
iSense is a nylon fibre processed with an AW proprietary technology to retain the resilience of nylon but with uniquely new levels of softness and comfort. Last summer, AW launched ranges in three weights – Serenity 70oz, Seduction 40oz and Splendour 40oz – and the heavyweight, and most expensive Serenity has been the best seller. This spring, a 60oz range Hermes will be available to give retailers another option and it has 12 colours which show off the clean subtly with which nylon can deliver fresh, pastel colours. “We have noticed that individual orders are getting bigger as people realise this is a carpet that can go beyond the bedroom and perform well thoughout the house,” says Steve.

This spring, a 60oz range Hermes will be available to give retailers another option and it has 12 colours which show off the clean subtly with which nylon can deliver fresh, pastel colours.
In May and June, a major extension to the iSense range will see the introduction of a de-lustred version of the yarn in all four of the current ranges to meet UK demand for a more matt finish. There will also be a super heavyweight Satin range to scrunch your toes into and finally a sparkley option called Surprise which deploys a lurex yarn to add a little glamour to the finish. If that were the full extent of AW’s softness story for 2015 it would be enough. But there’s a lot more to come… The early summer will see the introduction of Invictus – a supersoft high-performance polypropylene fibre that will carry a 20-year wear and stain warranty. The dramatic promotion of the new brand features iconic Maori figures to emphasise the strength and performance of Invctus – billed as “Great carpet. Invicible comfort.” Initially, there will be four options, a 50oz and 70oz in both plains and heathers. “Invictus is another triumph for the yarn technologists,” says Steve. “It is far softer than most polypropylene with excellent performance. Our business is to make carpets that retailers find easy to sell and we’re winning on softness right now!” T 01422 431100 www.associatedweavers.net from The Stocklists

Tough choices Lano
Along with revealing a brand new website at www.lano.com, Lano Carpets introduced new additions to its fabulous SmartStrand collection at this year’s Domotex. The fibre drew interest from visitors looking not only to the fibre’s excellent environmental credentials, but also to its leading resilience and ease of maintenance. Made under licence from Mohawk, SmartStrand carpets use renewable resources in 37% bio-based content, and offer homes the ideal blend of softness, easy maintenance, resilience and durability. New styles in tiles Leoline
Introducing new designs in its Tile Styles collection Leoline once again underlined the power of its market leading quality ranges in cushion flooring. With the addition of the stunning Terrazzo décor in three colourways, the reinvigorated Tile Styles collection now features contemporary finishes in keeping with architectural looks, a trend expected to show strong growth. A new lease of life has also been given to the sought after Woodmark collection with the weathered look of pale wood Azur and the darkened pine of Cardassian. Both looks are in-line with current fashions, Azur capturing the coastal look while Cardassian proving perfect for the rustic Scandinavian feel. Herringbone too is in high demand and is caught in the Woodmark collection in Toulouse.
“Our mix of design integrity, performance attributes and product quality makes our floors the ideal for homeowners that want to take advantage of the underfoot comfort, sound and thermal insulation qualities of cushion flooring, but who aren’t prepared to sacrifice style or quality,” said Victoria Hemelaer, product manager Leoline. A spirit of creativity and innovation Beaulieu Flooring Solutions
Beaulieu Flooring Solutions is a European leader and the sheer scale of its comprehensive flooring offer was brought together in one place for the first time at Domotex in a superb, integrated 1,300m2 stand at Hannover. “It is amazing – we have 2,045 new options on show at this event,” said Mimi Lamote, chief marketing officer. “We have brought everything together in one place because we see increasingly how consumers respond to trends across the various sectors and have a combination of needs.” The company was able to demonstrate that its flair and imagination matched the size of its product portfolio with an abundance of innovation.
Here is a fun thing from Real. These Jimmy ‘Noodle’ mats are made from closely coiled PVC fibres in seven standard colours and two standard sizes, allthough any colour is possible on demand. Already a popular product in the Americas and Asia, the noodle-like mats are relatively new to the European residential market.
Key innovations for 2015 include a major expansion of its offer in the commercial needle felt division under the company’s Real brand with a wider range of colours for wall-to-wall as well as tiles. Under the slogan “it’s hip to be square” Real revealed an all new range of one metre square needle felt tiles called Bedford Expocord in addition to the existing standard of 0.5m tiles such as Canterbury and York, a rib and velour tile. The big news in Beaulieu Flooring Solutions residential division under the brand name Ideal was the Domotex launch a new soft selection of carpets. The super-soft polyamide range presents Satine and Silk as a dense Saxony and shaggy construction offered in contemporary plains including vibrant colours or Velvet Design as a chromojet overprinted option. The soft PP quality Sweet Harmony caught the eye with his elegant colors, based on the latest UK trends. A new solution dyed polyester carpet fibre Spectrum was also seen for the first time, combining softness with high performance in wear and stain resistance. Three new polyester ranges were on show under the Ideal brand: Lucca, Monza and Siena. www.beaulieuflooringsolutions.com Beaulieu Flooring Solutions developed four ‘mindsets’ for their stand, developing inspiring roomsets to reflect the key contemporary trends they identify in today’s market. These were: Spirit – the need for clean, soft simplicity and relaxation in an age of information overload and urban intensity. The textures are soft and subtle with calm colours. Origin – a return to core values and authenticity mixed with a little nostaligia is reflected in this theme and expressed in the use of natural materials and warm earth colours. Folk – the new folk of the ‘citizen of the world’ is reflected in social media across conventional borders with an interest in ecology and craftsmanship. Handmade materials, strong textures and bright but never artificial colours are key references. Future – is for those who embrace technology and live accelerated lives and interior colours are vibrant and challenging with hard, shiny surfaces.
Beaulieu Flooring Solutions vinyl planks have a clever story to tell. Their new range PURE is bonded to a thin, lightweight rigid composite board which can be installed – using the glue-down or click-fit options - over an old tile floor and no sub-floor leveling is required.

“With F&X Carpets there’s a chance to offer unique carpets with a great story and at a cost that sees them compete with more run of the mill carpets”
Staking its claim F&X - Himalaya
Exhibiting once more at Europe’s largest flooring exhibition, Domotex, F&X Carpets staked its claim as one of the brightest rising stars in the domestic carpet scene, as it launched a spectrum of styles to cater for savvy UK homeowners, along with its new Himalaya brand. F&X Carpets is bringing natural wool and yak hair, polypropylene and recycled PET ranges to UK retailers, many of which contain innovative approaches to domestic carpet and all of which contain colours, designs and textures that have been exceptionally well received. Under the new Himalaya brand, F&X Carpets is not only the only manufacturer to mix natural fibres and recycled PET in wool-rich and wool-mix carpets, it is also one of the only to make Yak hair content readily available for UK homeowners. Featuring in the Apollo and Ares collections,Yak hair makes an exceptional carpet fibre, offering excellent thermal insulation, humidity regulation, softness, resilience and durability. In both these collections,Yak is mixed with wool and PET content, for a carpet that is cost competitive, has an excellent environmental back story and is unique in the UK marketplace: “It is harder and harder to find brands that offer something different for the homeowner and so retailers often end up with lots of ‘me too’ products, all very similar and with no real story to set them apart. However, with F&X Carpets there’s a chance to offer unique carpets with a great story and at a cost that sees them compete with more run of the mill carpets,” explains Gordon Hugo, F&X Carpets representative in the UK.
Gordon Hugo (left) with F&X owner Mr Wang Yulin.
Himalaya is launched with nine 100% wool ranges and seven industry-first wool-rich and woolmix carpets – using 20% recycled PET – so has the traditional UK consumer well catered for. In addition to this, F&X Carpets introduced its Luna range made of 100% PET (made from plastic drinks bottles) and with it brings a striking collection of recycled content stain-resistant carpets. PET carpets are finding a growing fan base among those who want the benefits of easy maintenance, but with a more considered impact on the environment, better resilience, softness and durability. The manufacturer also showcased six polypropylene ranges, all using two-ply yarn in a range of qualities and with ontrend tones. “Packed full of innovation such as the nine-ply wool-rich Santorini, our carpets have also been warmly received for their aesthetic qualities too,” continues Gordon Hugo. “From coordinating stripe and plain collections in soft and warm natural palettes to heavy textured loops, luxurious velvets and more, F&X Carpets is ready to take the UK by storm.” Tombola displays featuring F&X Carpets wool, wool-rich and wool-mix carpets under the Himalaya brand are already rolling out to retailers across the UK. Hi Bo, Silver Lining Louis de Poortere
Launching the brand new Silver Lining and Bo-Bohemian collections at Domotex, Louis de Poortere underlined its reputation as a designer extraordinaire of beautiful rugs that hold widespread appeal. Already gracing the pages of home interest magazines with its existing collections, Louis de Poortere is the darling of the UK rug scene, capturing the essence of the latest home trends.
Silver Lining features two fabulous designs in Twinkle and Diamonds. Each takes inspiration from an erased Fading World design with elements highlighted through a dazzling and defining high gloss yarn. Twinkle presents an all-over field of flowers in four dramatic colourways of Mayan Sun, Slate Quarry, Frosted Sage and Cupcake; while Diamonds features a centre focal of three distinctive diamond shapes. The rug is available in five colourways of Trinitario Brown, Obsidian Sky, Douglas Green, Pale Ruby and Bistre Blanket. Also well received at Domotex was the new Bo-Bohemian collection which reimagines tribal designs with a zest of bourgeois and twist of bohemian. “As these new designs prove, Louis de Poortere has an ability to create really beautiful rugs that capture the latest trends without becoming too overbearing or niche, making them an ideal choice for retailers that want a collection of rugs destined to sell and maximise return,” said Alan Russell of Louis de Poortere. This is Urban, a contemporary take on the trend towards city interior styles and the refurbishment of loft apartments and living spaces from industrial buildings.
Leading in laminates Balterio
Balterio make no secret of their ambition to be the quality leader in laminates and their presentation for 2015 shows that a lot of inspiration and investment has gone into getting the product offering just right. “We have looked closely at each of our collections to complete the palette of colours in each,” says Balterio’s Franky Terrijn. “Consumers think colour first and we’ve made sure that we have no gaps in our collections when it comes to meeting customer expectations.” As a result, Balterio came to Domotex with no fewer than 100 new decors across 16 different collections – plus two brand new ranges.
“
Consumers think colour first and we’ve made sure that we have no gaps in our collections when it comes to meeting customer expectations
”
One of those took centre stage on the stand – surrounded by scaffolding! This is Urban, a contemporary take on the trend towards city interior styles and the refurbishment of loft apartments and living spaces from industrial buildings. Perhaps the most striking impact is from the four light and dark concrete tile decors but cleverly, Balterio has carried their theme into four oak wood-mix decors and four pine decors, each with a worn, random, reclaimed feel. As a result, these decors can co-exist in the same installation to give an authentic feel.
The second new arrival is Fortissimo which, as its name suggests, tops the scale in quality and performance in a thick, solid 12mm plank that is available in 24 attractive oak decors. This is as close to a real wood floor as laminate can get and the deep embossed structure and micro V-groove are out to impress. In the UK, Balterio’s Tradition range with Quattro, Sapphire, Sculpture and Elegant are well-established best-sellers. To the Quattro range are added to the 16 ‘true-to-nature’ embossed decors six new colours to respond to consumer trends. These 9mm collections offers planks with 4-sided V-grooves and carry a 25-year residential warranty. T +32 (0)56 62 80 81 www.balterio.com

DOMOTEX 2015 The colour and creativity of wool Wools of New Zealand
Wools of New Zealand
Awards At the Show, Wools of New Zealand hosted their Wool Innovation awards for rugs, carpets and yarn. Open to co-exhibitors, each entry had to be commercially available and be either a Laneve or Wools of New Zealand branded product. Entries were judged by leading trade press figures, retailers, architects, designers and specifiers.
“Wools of New Zealand demonstrated its strength in innovation, underlining the scope and versatility of both the Laneve and Wools of New Zealand brands” Joanne Ramsden, Creative Manager, WoNZ Stimulating the industry, be it in colour, style or technology, is at the core of Wools of New Zealand. Innovation was their theme at Domotex this year and it was visible at every corner on their splendid contemporary stand complete with nine brand partners. Centrepiece of the stand was the new Faroe collection from Gaskell Wool Rich, which comprises a co-ordinating plain, patterned check and herringbone textured loop. Available in 9 colours, the ranges are nordic in style to capitalise on the modern Scandinavian look. It is easy on the eye and understated and the contemporary colour palette will work with any interior. It is scheduled to launch in late Spring. Another show stopper was the first ever hand tufted Aulana rug, which uses pure gold with undyed wool. Ancient chemistry combines with modern science to create colours without the use of dyes. Fine particles of pure gold shift light into delicate shades of grey, pink and purple. Brockway Carpets showcased 7 new products and were delighted with the show. Sales Director Shaun Lewis commented: “The market may be moving to polypropylene but at Brockway we remain committed to wool. Quality not quantity has been the name of the game for us and it has been interesting to see customers who are not regular visitors to the show and those who haven’t been for years. It is a good sign – but I am not surprised as this is how a show should be.” Cormar had a bigger stand than last year in recognition of their success at the show. Aiming to develop their European business particularly, they introduced a new loop pile product. Cavalier was pleased with the way things went – and their location on the corner with two walkways. Sales Director Hans Lowe commented: “We have had several meaningful conversations with new and existing customers and 2015 will see Cavalier focus more on the export side.” Flock were further happy partners as they reported good business leads. Commenting on the show, Joanna Ramsden, Wools of New Zealand creative manager and the architect of the superb stand said: “I was very pleased with the way the Wool Centre operated and our partners seemed positive about the business they did. The functionality of the stand and the visitor traffic it generates is always a big plus. I think Wools of New Zealand demonstrated its strength in innovation, underlining the scope and versatility of both the Laneve and Wools of New Zealand brands. “I am currently concentrating on new collections utilising ‘effect’ yarns which broadens the creative scope for texture as well as patterning potential,” said Joanna. “ I am particularly looking forward to the launch of Faroe which was very well received at the show – this introduces a refreshing and eclectic alternative to the stripe which still continues to dominate.” T 01943 603888 www.woolsofnewzealand.com 54 March 2015

Gulf growth for Ulster
Ulster Carpets has announced the opening of a new office in the Gulf Region. The new premises based in the Jumeriah Lakes Towers, Dubai, is the result of highly successful trading in the region over a number of years.
High profile clients in the area have been attracted not only by Ulster’s first-class product offering but also by the added advantage of having a local sales team, providing timely customer service and a comprehensive knowledge of the market. The team are highly supported by design, planning and manufacturing based at the company’s headquarters in Northern Ireland, enabling shorter lead times and ensuring superior quality throughout the manufacturing process. This combination has enabled Ulster to service some of the region’s most prestigious venues and hotels, such as the recently completed five star, Sofitel Dubai Downtown (pictured right). Ulster supplied a number of different contemporary axminster designs to the luxurious hotel to include public areas, corridors, and guestrooms. The move to new premises marks a commitment to further advancement in the Gulf Region and is just one example of Ulster’s current plans for expansion and growth. Ulster recently began the first phase of a £30million investment into infrastructure and technology at their Northern Ireland headquarters, involving the construction of a new Dyehouse and Energy Centre. The Dyehouse will feature state of the art dyeing equipment whilst the Energy Centre will significantly improve the efficiency of the whole plant and also significantly reduce the company’s carbon footprint, in line with their strong environmental ethos. Flower on Flooring Treading the timber tightrope Among the many choices available to buyers of timber flooring are the options provided by both solid and engineered wood. Beaulieu International Group compares the two choices, with solid wood typically available in tongue-and-groove 1.9cm (.75in) planks, while engineered flooring wood veneer is a minimum of 2.5mm thick, with bonded layers of plywood, HDF or solid wood underneath. While solid wood will react to temperature and humidity levels, engineered options remain stable in most conditions, reducing the possibility of warping. The company states that both options are "very durable" and surface wear will equally depend on the type of finish. While solid wood should be installed on or above grade and either nailed or stapled, engineering wood is suitable for a wide range of interiors and can be nailed glued or installed as a floating floor. Beaulieu states that because the look and feel of both options is virtually the same, the purchasing decision should be made by considering cost, climactic factors and other practical considerations. Discussing current and emerging trends, Kährs (UK) country manager Harvey Booth says: "There’s been huge interest in very rustic, hand-distressed oak floors – but designers are just starting to adopt cleaner grades and more subtle colour tones, which will fuel consumer interest in the coming months. Subtle tones are on-trend at Kährs
"These new soughtafter floors still have the popular whitewash and gray undertones. Kährs Capital Collection includes four oak designs, which reflect the new trend."
Sustainable Eco Balance floors from Parador
He further states due to environmental pressure, engineered boards will become thinner, so a quality construction is paramount. Traditional patterned parquet will also be a big design trend for 2015, he says. Traditional Herringbone and Chevron-designs are now being offered with on-trend stained finishes. "At Kährs, our existing patterned designs will be joined by a new Bloc Collection. The new range will include seven new products, with unlimited geometric design options; it will be available from this spring," says Mr Booth. Parador describes its Eco Balance engineered wood flooring, which is created by considering ecological considerations for material, production and style requirements. “The focus with Eco Balance is on sustainable process,” says its management board. “For us that means sensibly combining ecological, social and economic aspects. Eco Balance has a strategically important unique selling point, which is a success factor both for the retail sector and for us.” For the production of the engineered wood floors, the company only uses raw materials from local, sustainable forestry to produce high quality floors with minimum transport requirements. Parador further explains it favours renewable energy and optimised processes, which conserve resources while also reducing emissions. The packaging is made of recycled paper and film, while all products meet

Further comparison of solid and engineered wood flooring is provided by Kersaint Cobb general manager Mike Richardson, who gives his opinion on relevant trends and further considerations: "Oak as a raw material has seen an increase in price in recent months, highlighting the importance of engineered oak plank flooring which allows all the beauty and character of the oak surface without the need to use as much oak to produce the entire finished floor. "The UK public still love the simplicity and natural beauty of rustic oak, however we are introducing colour and soft tones through pale whites and greys to add a modern twist to a classic material. "Our desire for all things 'vintage & antique' will continue to remain a popular trend in our homes. Darker woods are the ideal choice for a traditional scheme and can inject a real feeling of warmth and depth to a room," Mr Richardson concludes.

Even my cat could get an account! The complaint that some suppliers are not fussy enough about who they sell to has been getting louder and louder and we have picked up a lot of critical comments.
Many retailers feel some manufacturers and suppliers are undermining the investment they have made in their stores by offering accounts to dodgy dealers working from vans and lock-ups. “Even my cat could get an account from some of these people” was a comment from one of our recent retailer surveys about supplier satisfaction. The situation appears to have got more intense as manufacturers compete for market share in this post-recession period of slow growth. Selling indiscriminately into low-cost internet retailers is also a major bone of contention.
Do you think it’s a level playing field? Is indiscriminate supplying undermining your business? Or do you accept that it’s a market economy and that every type of business should compete on its own terms? Inform the industry and let us know what you think….
The online survey takes less than four minutes. It’s anonymous and doesn’t need any form filling. Please help us inform the industry. For more information: Kährs (UK) T 023 9245 3045 www.kahrs.com Parador T 0049 2541 7360 www.parador.de

Wool with the Midas touch
Wools of New Zealand introduce Aulana, a new luxury brandin which cutting edge science, wool and pure gold, combine to produce the ultimate exclusive textiles. The first Aulana product is the Midas Rug, a unique hand knotted rug. Individual pieces can be commissioned.
Ancient chemistry combines with modern science to create colours without the use of dyes. Fine particles of pure gold shift light into delicate shades of grey, pink and purple. The scientific process is called ‘localised surface plasman resonance’ . To understand this, think gothic cathedrals and their stained glass windows, which are often red in apparent colour – when, in reality, they are gold dissolved in the glass. The Midas Rug, designed by SoFarSoNear and on display in their London showroom, is expected to retail at circa £12,000. Created to illustrate luxury and opulence, the rug does not glitter with gold, but rather uses gold to interrupt light and create elegant soft hues. Commenting on the launch, Steven Parsons, Innovations Manager at Wools of New Zealand, said: “Aulana is about creating an heirloom. Its products won’t be gold in colour, but gold is in there creating the hues that are visible. And because it is gold particles it is permanent, so, like cathedral windows, Aulana colours will never fade, and our ancestors can inherit an Aulana rug centuries from now and the colour will be just as rich.” T 01943 603888 www.woolsofnewzealand.com
Guide gets faster
F. Ball has released a new version of its comprehensive Recommended Adhesives Guide (RAG) for 2015 featuring over 5,500 up-to-date adhesive recommendations for floorcoverings, endorsed by over 200 leading international manufacturers. RAG is the flooring industry's most trusted guide to adhesives and floorcovering compatibility. Taking a risk on the wrong flooring adhesive can often result in costly and time consuming remedial work, or in the worst case, could necessitate starting the job all over again. By following the tested and approved recommendations contained within the RAG, flooring contractors and specifiers can be confident in their adhesive selection by being sure that they're using the right product first time. F. Ball’s Richard Harris, said: “Time is money for modern flooring contractors, with more pressure than ever before to complete flooring installations to tight deadlines. The RAG allows contractors to save time by specifying the right adhesive for each setting and floorcovering from the outset, including fast-track options for when time really matters. Contractors should always consult an up-to-date RAG before selecting an adhesive, because the materials used in floorcoverings, skirtings and covings change according to advances in manufacturing techniques." The RAG is available free as a printed A5 book, an interactive, searchable version on the F. Ball website and as a free app available for smartphone and tablet devices via the Apple and Google app stores. The printed edition is released annually and the digital editions are updated continuously throughout the year by F. Ball's Technical Service Department. T 01538 361633 www.f-ball.co.uk

A crush on recycling
Clinton Carpets has a crush on recycling as the latest company to acquire a Kenburn “carpet crusher” as part of their commitment towards a zero waste to landfill policy. Clinton Carpets owner and ACG member Tony Brennan explains: “We visit the Flooring Show at Harrogate every year and each year there’s a stand that catches your eye as being a little bit unusual. We noticed on the Kenburn stand a large yellow machine with a sign saying “carpet crusher”, intrigued we went on the stand to find out more. When I heard the statement, ‘it costs less to recycle carpet than it does to send it to landfill’, the deal was done to purchase a carpet crusher.” It was Kenburn’s debut at the Flooring Show with the aim to promote the financial and environmental benefits of recycling waste carpet and underlay. Working in partnership with Carpet Recycling UK, Kenburn also works closely with “waste to energy” companies who use waste carpet and underlay to power concrete kilns as these waste streams have a high calorific value and all the logistics for collecting the waste are arranged by Kenburn. Clinton’s Tony Brennan, whose company is based in Retford, added: “The nature of our business means we also generate large volumes of cardboard and plastic film waste as well and we use the carpet crusher to compact these waste streams in order to receive a revenue from a local recycling company. Another added bonus has been the drastic reduction of our ever increasing skip costs.” T 01727 844988

Son of Carpetright The son of ”carpet king” Baron Harris of Peckham is planning to compete with the Carpetright business his father founded with his own chain of 200 flooring stores.. Martin Harris, who left Carpetright last year after 23 years at the business, said he hoped to open the first store this summer. He is aiming to attract a more affluent shopper than the former family business and take advantage of an anticipated rise in sales of home furnishings this year after a period in the doldrums. “There’s enough room in the market for more than one national retailer. There’s room for us both,” he told the trade journal Retail Week. “A lot of flooring stores are not aspirational and I want people to be inspired by the possibility of what they can do with their home,” he said. “People are spending money on their homes as there’s no point keeping it in the bank.” He said his father was supportive of his plan to open 200 stores over five years. The business will be chaired by Sir Harry Djanogly, who served as a Carpetright non-executive director between 1993 and 2005. It is not clear if Lord Harris will have any role.
World premiere: 50 shades of greige!
Liverpool retailer David Williams made it into national newspapers with his inpired promotion of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Carpet collection to coincide with the UK premiere of the infamous film on February 13.
Inviting customers to ‘Get laid!’, the Williams Flooring Centre brought together a selection of all their greys to make the point, including, of course, a shag pile! He told the Liverpool Echo and Daily Mirror: “It’s a bit of fun because everyone is going 50 Shades of Grey crazy at the moment. After a bit of digging around we realised we had 50 shades of grey carpet. “We’ve got a new ‘50 shades’ banner outside the shop and a lot of people are laughing as they go past.”
