A sparkling new idea for the home Once more Associated Weavers come to the fore with a stunning new look for the modern home. We already know how people clamour for super-softness in their carpets and iSense, only launched in 2014, has satisfied that demand with increasing success. Now we’ve added an extra element to its appeal. The magic of iSense stems from the unique 100% polyamide ‘memory’ fibres that we use to produce its amazing bounce-back qualities. If things like furniture cause indents on the surface, the polyamide yarn naturally springs back to its original state, so iSense will maintain its fresh new look throughout years of hard use. Now though, because of the very high quantity of fine filaments in its construction, we’ve been able to introduce some delicate strands of silvery Lurex to give it a glittery, sparkly effect. We call it Surprise.
A unique look for every room
Our research has shown that Surprise will sit very nicely in any room of the home. It’ll add an extra dimension to even the smallest of spaces. The look is subtle. The technology is astounding. Saxony-style Surprise is offered at 1520 gram weight, in 4m or 5m widths, and is fully guaranteed with a 20-year wear warranty. Available in ten fashionable shades, we’ve naturally used star signs to identify the colours: each one, from Jet black Aries to mid beige Scorpio, is a natural choice for your display of Associated Weavers products. The clever addition of the sparkly Lurex to Surprise will give an extra appeal to everyone’s favourite room, without any compromise to the ultra-softness of the carpet. And you and your customers will be pleasantly surprised by its resilient performance too.
Leading the way
Our innovative manufacturing prowess. Our market-leading reputation. Our memorable brands. Everything about Associated Weavers means that we’re the name you can’t forget. And you’ll soon develop a soft spot for iSense Surprise too. With Surprise, we’ve created a unique product fit for the glitterati. Order your displays of iSense Surprise now for a Spring bonanza of sales. Because we all love surprises.

Carpet&FlooringReview Mercury rising
Mercury XT is the latest collection from Leoline to offer homeowners sophisticated style and flooring that delivers a tough, easy to look after and comfortable surface underfoot. From a brand new chip effect that brings multi-coloured metallic glimmer to a range of contemporary mineral looks in Pueblo to seven carefully selected woods that represent popular and trend-led options, Mercury XT is ready to take on the busiest of family homes. In fact, such is the performance of this cushion floor collection that it is also suited for Class 32 general commercial applications. Bringing impeccable resilience throughout the home, Mercury XT also features additional slip-resistance, making it great for use in areas such as bathrooms with its resistance to water ingress, additional safety and stylish good looks . “The new Mercury XT collection is all about contemporary style,” says Victoria Hemelaer, product manager, Leoline. “Whether this comes in a natural look with brand new woods such as the rustic cross-cut grey of Sorbonne or richly grained Allure, or a mineral look with the 10 stunning Pueblo decors the end result is exactly the same, a floor that delivers lasting performance and a safer surface underfoot.” Joining the Elite family, Mercury XT comes with a 15-year wear warranty and comes equipped with Powerback for a more resilient floor, safe from high heels and with better recovery from furniture impressions. SimpLay stunning
Polyflor has launched the Expona SimpLay PUR range of loose lay luxury vinyl tiles as the latest addition to the Expona family of premium vinyl floorcoverings.
The Expona SimpLay collection of loose lay vinyl tiles and planks for heavy commercial interiors offers authentic reproductions of beautiful natural materials presented in an adhesive-free, ready to lay product designed to reduce installation time. Living up to the Expona brand’s reputation for offering high design flooring, the new range includes 38 stunning designs featuring a variety of both traditional and contemporary wood, stone and textile effects. Expona SimpLay’s unique, non-skid honeycomb backing layer and thicker 5mm gauge ensures that the tiles stay in position to create a robust and hardwearing floorcovering for high traffic, heavy commercial environments such as the office, retail and leisure sectors. As it is a loose lay product which can be installed over many different types of existing floorcoverings, subfloor preparation is significantly reduced and each plank or tile can be installed, lifted and reinstalled elsewhere without leaving any residue. Tom Rollo, Polyflor’s Marketing Manager comments, “We see Expona SimpLay as a practical choice when deadlines are tight and clients require a quick turnaround. As an adhesive-free loose lay LVT, this product is also ideal for creating temporary installations such as pop up shops and exhibition spaces.” This new Expona SimpLay collection joins the high performance Expona range which now includes Expona Design and Expona Commercial luxury vinyl tiles, Expona Control - the world’s first LVT featuring sustainable wet slip resistance, and Expona Flow vinyl sheet flooring. NEWS Future fibre
With Ara and Lyra, F&X Carpets is bringing the low impact of recycled content to homes across the country with a fibre made entirely from plastic drinks bottles, Aevita.
More than just recycled, Aevita makes for a carpet that’s super-soft, strong and with inherent stain-resistance, thanks to the innovative manufacturing of F&X Carpets. “Aevita is the future of fibre for the home and brings all the ease of living expected from modern carpet with lower impact on diminishing resources,” explains Gordon Hugo, sales manager, F&X Carpets. “More over, it is Aevita’s ability to tick all the right boxes for homeowners that makes it such an attractive proposition. Incredibly soft, hard-wearing, stain-resistant and bleach-cleanable, it really is a carpet fibre that fits with modern expectations.” F&X Carpets has developed a more natural look for its Aevita styles, meaning that both Ara and Lyra are more suited to UK taste than alternatives. With a weight of 2,400g/m2, Ara brings a luxurious and comfortable surface underfoot, while Lyra brings great value and all-round practicality in a 1,700g/m2 weight. Both carpets use a two-ply yarn for even more resilience and recovery. “It’s important that innovation such as this is not just affordable by a few, but by the many and here Aevita strikes another blow for rivals,” continues Gordon. “We’ve made Ara and Lyra in a specification that make recycled content far more available and this can only have a hugely positive impact on its acceptance within the marketplace.” Ara and Lyra come with long 15-year stain and 10-year wear warranties and are rated for General Domestic Use. Each is available in 10 on-trend colours and in a 4m width. A new Aevita display featuring these styles will also be shortly available. T 07976 607657 www.fxcarpets.co.uk
Feeling the Pulse
Quick-Step’s new Pulse collection is a luxury vinyl collection with an unprecedented realistic look achieved through a revolutionary production method. It rates as one of the most practical designer floor on the market today. Pulse is hard-wearing, water-tight, warm, sound-absorbent, just as attractive as wood and produced entirely free of phthalates.
Aesthetically speaking, the UK is still a big fan of wooden flooring. The allure of this warm material is favoured by all, but today’s flooring demands extend far beyond looks alone. This is why Quick-Step developed a new generation of vinyl that not only satisfies our practical requirements, but is just as aesthetically pleasing. Modern technology is making it possible to realistically mimic very delicate, expensive or difficult-toapply materials, with practical features we could only dream of before. It also enables designers to use materials in entirely new ways that would have been impossible with the real thing. A prime example of this is Quick-Step Laminate’s scorched black Impressive Burned planks, featuring a black scorched pattern that would have been impossible to create using the genuine material! The new Pulse collection features 20 designs that correspond to the latest interior decorating trends. A new production unit opened last summer raises the creation of attractive imitation products to a higher level. This is where the new Pulse vinyl collection is produced: vinyl planks in a wide range of wood designs and matching grain textures. The extra long and wide planks show an enormous amount of variation in grain patterns that produce the visual effect of a genuine wood floor, while a matching wood grain texture ensures the authentic look and feel of genuine wood. Booming business
It’s been a hugely successful year for the rapidly expanding Designer Contracts – the UK’s largest flooring contractor.
The company, which has a national network of 12 regional offices and a show home design division, saw a 14% increase in turnover to £34 million for the 12 months to the end of October 2015, compared to the same period in the previous year. Peter Kelsey, md of Designer Contracts said: “We are delighted with our progress in the past year. Our national buying power along with our unique regional structure enables us to offer an unrivalled service to both local and national clients. The company recently trebled its national distribution facility moving to larger premises, increasing its size from 44,000 to 109,000 square feet, with a significant increase in height, offering three times the amount of storage capacity. It then expanded its regional facilities in North London and Essex and the South West. Future plans include relocating its North East regional depot and an additional facility in Scotland. Since the launch of the Home Builders Federation annual customer satisfaction survey, carried out by the HBF and NHBC each year, significant progress has been made by the industry to deliver exemplary levels of customer service, something which Designer Contracts prides itself on providing. Last year the company made key new customer service support appointments. The dedicated team of 20 now includes a number of customer service managers, fitters, co-ordinators and administrators across their 12 regions. The company has also invested in an additional seven vehicles to enable swift inspection and remedial action. The company was awarded ‘Take Back Partner of the Year’ by Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK). Record collection
In 2015, Recofloor, founded by leading flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor to divert vinyl flooring from landfill, collected 508 tonnes of material for recycling into flooring or other products.
It’s a new annual collection record for the national vinyl flooring recycling scheme, which has 650-plus members throughout the UK and Ireland. Recycling, versus landfilling, waste vinyl flooring can reduce collectors’ waste disposal costs by up to 70% and also benefits the environment. Recofloor’s success in engaging with all levels of the flooring chain continues to drive the scheme and it has built up a strong relationship with distributors who contributed 213 tonnes (42%) to last year’s total. Contractors performed robustly with nearly 178 tonnes (35%), while construction projects generated just over 28 tonnes. Commenting on the 2015 figure, Recofloor’s Carla Eslava. says: “Once again, we have exceeded 500 tonnes in a single year and we commend our members for this tremendous achievement, which we’ll be celebrating at our forthcoming Recofloor Annual Awards event on March 3rd.” Flooring contractors, distributors and construction companies can book free tickets to attend Recofloor’s fifth annual awards event, which will be held at Old Trafford, the Home of Manchester United. Guests can enjoy a hot buffet lunch and book a complimentary tour around the football ground. Host Matt Le Tissier, the former Southampton and England footballer who is now the star of Sky Sports’ ‘Gillette Soccer Saturday’ and a columnist for skysports.com, will kick off proceedings with anecdotes from his sporting career before introducing key speakers from the flooring industry. Don't stereotype the carpet tile! There is no stereotype for tile - unlimited choice in texture, pattern and material delivers both flexibility in design and installation. An effective flooring choice across commercial and residential interiors. quality woven Axminster products that meet the extreme conditions of the commercial market. It is also the only manufacturer in the world to guarantee critically matched tiles. Brintons has supplied tiles for a range of hotels and casinos across the world, most notably the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, which has almost 10,000sqm of custom made tile installed. No matter what the project, there’s no doubt that commercial developers are looking for costeffective, stylish solutions. This is one reason why carpet tiles are so popular, as they provide a design solution that can be tailored to any environment. They are simple to transport, easy to handle and take up minimal space.
Tapibel - Incati patterns
Tapibel open up a whole world of possibilities with the latest investment in their INCATI brand which is already synonymous with innovation. Their new Myriad individual pile delivery tufting machine unlocks endless possibilities in patterns and designs. This allows INCATI to further expand the highly acclaimed tile programme and add new and exhilarating collections and designs. Linked to state-of-the-art Tuftlink software, designers can work in separate layers to create greater artistic effects with pile heights and colours etc. The added advantage of each pile yarn going over a separate roll eliminates the need for any repeat across the full 4m width, which as the name suggests opens a myriad of design effects. Whether it is distinctive basket
weave designs or high and low loops to create on-trend concrete effects, it is clear that this investment adds to the already substantial capacity for tenth-gauge tufting at the company. Unveiled at Domotex this year, there has been a great reaction from UK buyers to the new designs created on their system so far.The use of Econyl BCF fibre, recovered from waste nylon, also gives the product an attractive sustainable story. Brintons can manufacture almost any design created on a broadloom into a tile, meaning that no pattern is off limits, offering a truly unique style. For over two decades, Brintons has been manufacturing tiles for projects across the globe. The company has become renowned for its high

Tiles are more economical over the life of the product too, as there is no underlay requirement installation is quicker. There is also less waste, as awkwardly shaped areas can be costly to fit in broadloom. This flexibility combined with the inherent acoustic insulation properties, which reduces ambient noise created by impact or foot movement, makes tiles perfect for high footfall locations. Common Theme, the latest collection from modular flooring manufacturer Interface is inspired by the latest global trends. The subtle but distinctive grey palette provides a foundation for interiors which will resonate in design cultures around the world. The collection can be used to zone areas in open plan office spaces through the use of varied textures and colour ways, but also to complement brighter accent colours featured in Interface’s other global collections. Common Theme provides a sophisticated solution for designers wanting to create a recognisable identity across international business interiors.

Taking the floor
at the flagship furniture show
The January Furniture Show has become a flooring phenomenon almost overnight – entering a significant new date into the increasingly crowded calendar for the trade. The event at Birmingham’s NEC has a long track record for furniture, bedding and lighting and attracts a diverse audience of interior designers and contract specifiers as well as furniture retailers, but until this year the show has attracted just a handful of flooring suppliers. Then event organisers contacted leading buying group SMG in a bid to boost the flooring content and the ‘Flooring Showcase’ was born – a show within a show which attracted 30 exhibitors in over 500 square metres of space. “We are particularly delighted with the response to the SMG-coordinated Flooring Showcase,” said NEC organizer Steve Richards. “It sits among what is by far the biggest UK furnishing event of 2016 and is an excellent buying opportunity for dedicated flooring buyers as well as retailers from across the UK.” Brand leading carpet companies including Abingdon, Associated Weavers, Axminster, Ball & Young, Cavalier, Crown, Edel Telenzo, Furlong, Victoria and Whitestone Weavers were joined by rug specialists such as Barnscroft, Flair, Mastercraft and Think Rugs. Chris Moffat of SMG said: “We were approached by the show to bring in more flooring manufacturers and I’m pleased to say they jumped at the chance. The show is very professionally presented and we soon found out that we were on to a winner. The event brings to suppliers a wider audience in the furnishing and interior design sectors.” Mike Symonds of SMG added, “The January timing couldn’t be more perfect and being located at the NEC makes it a very easy event to attend, especially with the Sunday opening.” The flooring companies agreed. “We have been very pleased with the show and the quality and quantity of visitors has exceeded our expectations,” said Jonathan Davies of Associated Weavers. Whitestone’s Vince Holden agreed: “It’s turned out to be a very good event with a lot of visitors and the opportunity to meet new customers including more from the South than we might see at Harrogate.” Trade shows in the UK flooring sector appear to be booming with the new Wool Floor Show London opening its doors in Chelsea March 23 and 24, then the increasingly popular Buying Group National Flooring Show in Solihull in May and, of course, the resurgent Flooring Show in Harrogate in September.
Pace setter Furlong Flooring Furlong set the pace for the flooring sector at the January Flooring Show with a stunning stand that stood out from the crowd. The presentation reflects the increasing confidence of a company that has invested in a highly professional approach to the market and given retailers everything they need to do better business with consumers. “We are promoting the full package – service, logistics and marketing,” says Neil Valentine of Furlong. “It’s a full value offer. We have great point-of-sale, competitive pricing and full stock levels so that we can tick all the boxes for what the retailer wants.” Front of house were the latest launches from Furlong’s Regency Carpets including Dolce Moda Heathers, Royal Saxony and Indulgence. Even better Barbican Edel Telenzo
Edel Telenzo’s Barbican is coming into its own right now as the trend towards subtle texture gains strength in wool loop and this range offers a little more character than many competitors. “It is not a defined stripe but more a subtle ‘shifting’ stripe, therefore quite new, fresh and appealing,” says National Sales Manager Mark Rooney. A 100% wool carpet, Barbican offers six two-tone textured heathers but now four new stripes have been added to the previous two to increase the options. The stripes have that assymetrical ‘knitted’ style that is in vogue and coordinate perfectly with the rest of the range. T 01422 374417

The story behind a yarn
Associated Weavers
Associated Weavers gave centre-stage at the Birmingham show to their star turn double-act of super-soft yarn performers – polyamide iSense and polypropylene Invictus. “iSense has been massive for us and it’s getting bigger,” said Sales Manager Jonathan Davies. “Retailers have really responded to the marketing package we have created around the product and everybody loves it.” The success of iSense is assured and growing rapidly but Jonathan said Invictus was “catching up” after its launch last Autumn and a strong set of sales figures pre-Christmas. The first full year of Invictus is going to be interesting! T 01422 431100 www.associatedweavers.net

Posh on parade Ball & Young
The January Flooring Show brings an interior design audience to the flooring industry and Ball & Young were able to capitalise on the potential of these new customers with its eye-catching underlay brands. Their posh Cloud 9 PU products Charleston and Caviar & Crystal are ideal for upper end installations and Ann Shaw of Ball & Young is positive about the way market confidence is growing. “Increasingly everybody is upbeat and there is a buzz in the business,” she said. “Better quality carpet is being sold out there and so there is a matching demand for better quality underlay. And we have it!” T 01536 200502

Super sheepish Barnscroft
Devon-based Barnscroft has made a real name for itself as a leader in supplying sheepskin and business is brisk as the trend in naturals reinforces their appeal – especially for the distinctive rare breeds such as Jacob’s. “There is a fashion for all things natural at present and wool doesn’t come more natural than sheepskin,” says Barnscroft business owner Steve Upperton who is meticulous in sourcing the best quality products. The latest tip dyed skins have proved highly popular and the new colours for 2016 are very, very subtle shades of grey, cappuchino and soft pinks. T 01404 851152 www.barnscroft.com
Space craft Crown Floors Crown Floors was one of the forward thinking flooring brands to exhibit at this year’s January Furniture Show as it looked to captivate a new audience of furniture and home interiors retailers with its striking carpet ranges. In fact, it is these retailers that are often without the space to commit to large display units that Crown Floors is targeting with its new tombola and lectern displays. Of course, these displays are equally relevant for existing flooring retailers keen to give more standing to Crown Floors or to give the brand a try. A new tombola featuring 74 different styles in a compact footprint is one of the new display options available. Focusing on the brand’s Easy Clean ranges of soft and bleach cleanable polypropylene, the tombola features striking ‘familyproof comfort’ imagery and clearly communicates the advantages of choosing carpet from Crown, including four and five-metre width options. Crown also revealed a new-look single-sided lectern for individual ranges from the brand and housing large 40x60cm samples of key colours, as well as the full range in a swatch book hung on the reverse. Showcase style Flair Flair Rugs has used the January Furniture Show to underline its position as one of the foremost rug suppliers in the UK. Showcasing the very best in beautiful rugs, with its stunning SS16 offerings taking centre stage, retailers were treated to a world of colour and texture as the company revealed new additions across its portfolio. New collections Cirrus, Sommer and Decks are testament to the brand’s investment in design research and development, and with a department dedicated to meeting the tastes and stylistic requirements of the UK homeowner, the show proved the perfect platform to reveal such exciting new concepts. Gareth Davies, UK Sales and Marketing Director, explains: “Over the last 32 years we have built an enviable reputation within the interiors sector, enjoying longstanding relationships with thousands of customers up and down the country. Our existing retail partners have already come to appreciate our ability to deliver the very best in rugs, backed by our commitment to offering first class service. “The reaction at the show exceeded expectations and we were delighted to be able to bring visitors a flavour of what Flair Rugs can offer. Celeb presenter Hugh Mackay
Momentum has been building behind Hugh Mackay’s flagship Durham Twist, launched to great acclaim in Harrogate. “It has gone tremendously well since then and people have really responded to the presentation,” says Sales Director Vince Holden (pictured here with East Midlands agent Steve Furniss). Durham Twist did arrive in some style with a sophisticated black livery, a new lectern and a superb presenter which Vince describes as the “best book we have ever made” – it proved very popular with interior designers at the NEC event, showing them the full scope of the collection. The book has a big job to do, covering 390 options – 60 colours with 10 stripes in three weights and three widths. Service is sorted Interfloor “We are starting 2016 in the best shape ever,” says Anthony Dawson, Interfloor’s National Sales Manager. It’s clear the investment we made in increasing stocks, improving service, and meeting our customer’s requirements through their key pre-Christmas period proved highly successful for our popular Tredaire, Duralay, Gripperrods and Stikatak brands. “We had a very, very successful run up to Christmas. In the important peak period from September to December, we know our customers rely heavily on their key suppliers and its vital that our products are delivered on time and in full” says Anthony. “We were able to keep taking orders and making deliveries as normal right up to Christmas and we’re now building on that by continuing our increased focus on quality and service in 2016.” Investment in production and warehouse capacity during 2015 means that Interfloor now has scope to build much higher stock during the summer months, and additional investment in a major new IT system is designed to further enhance its customer service. Multi-wide choice Abingdon
Abingdon have seen a growing demand across for wool and is rising to the occasion with even more choice to offer consumers. A key feature that sets them apart is the multi-width option which Abingdon has been extending across its Wilton Royal wool ranges as it upgrades the offer. Examples include the flagship 80/20 60oz Charter Supreme and the popular Anniversary Twist, an 80/20 which comes in 32 and 42 oz weights. The 100% wool berber loop Royal Windsor is also multi-width. The 80/20 Welsh Collection has also gone multi-width alongside adding five new colours to each of its three weights to offer an attractive range of options. “We have seen an increase in demand for wool,” says Abingdon’s Martin Peace, “the multi-width option at competitive price points gives us an edge in the market.” On the polypropylene side, the big story is Super Soft Pastelle / Pastelle Supreme also available in 2.5/4-5m widths which is just starting to go into the market in 16 colours and lives up to its name with a soft, luxury feel. “It is one of the softest polypropylene’s out there and with 16 colours and multi-width flexibility, there are a lot of options for retailers.” says Northern Sales Manager, Colin Brown. Stainfree Rustique was first launched at Harrogate and has enjoyed a great introduction to the market with its interesting tri-colour heathered yarn. Adding to its appeal in 2016 is a new 2.5m width and new point-of-sale support. Abingdon has also been working hard at its presentation with a fresh new graphic style which is embedded in the new wall displays (pictured right with Colin Brown) and on the lectern headers. Parquet possibilities Distinctive Design Flooring
Distinctive Design Flooring was right on trend at the NEC with a stand floor design in the fashionable herringbone style that is such a favourite of interiors magazines at the moment. The floor was from Distinctive’s Vintage Parquet Collection which offers endless design possibilities including herringbone, zigzag, brick, block and basket weave plus a design that Distinctive calls Haddon Hall, incorporating two different decors in a geometric design. The are six oak decors in a 2.5mm plank at 3” x 9” which comes in a pack of 60 strips, making about a square metre. Equally attactive is the Italilan Collection, a range of seven wood planks and eight stone tiles which have a hertitage aesthetic and registered embossing that sets them apart from the mainstream. There are two different sizes in the stone decors for maximum flexibility with five options at 18” x 36” and three at 12” x 24”. Premium preview Louis de Poortere An exciting mix of rugs and carpets demonstrates the Louis de Poortere’s appetite for premium design underfoot. UK Sales Director, Alan Russell, explains: “We were delighted to introduce our newest rug collections, Mad Men and Mosaiq, alongside an exclusive preview of a new line in broadloom. We hope this trend-led approach will appeal to furniture retailers and their customers as we head into SS16, with a service and quality typical of the Louis de Poortere brand.” Mad Men rugs were a headline act at this year’s show, designs inspired by the golden boys of the 60s responsible for America’s most memorable brand images. Despite Louis de Poortere’s unmistakably vintage roots, Mad Men takes a contemporary turn with straight and broken lines, dull and shiny yarns and smooth and rugged pencil strokes holding sway. Mosaiq, more subtle by nature, features flower motives with tribal geometrics, a mix of Louis de Poortere’s heritage style and new-found contemporary edge. Louis de Poortere also previewed its latest developments in broadloom carpet. The Haute Couture collection holds wall-to-wall offerings of the highest order, featuring remarkable wool and wool-blends to be explored by both the domestic and contract sectors, with texture and style only made possible through use of Jacquard Wilton looms. Revival of the fittest!
The NICF (National Institute of Carpet and Floorlayers) has proudly relaunched the Carpet Fitter of the Year Competition. The prestigious 2016 competition is open to all UK fitters (including non-members), with a generous prize package including £1000 cash, a selection of tools, winner’s trophy, one year’s free Master Fitter membership and an iPad, kindly donated by Which? Trusted Traders. The deadline for online entry, at www.nicfltd.org.uk, is Thursday 31 March. “The Fitter of the Year competition last ran in 2001, when it was won by Tim Nicholas from Wales. I was fortunate enough to make the finals of the competition three times; an experience that was only eclipsed by my being on the winning team in the European Floor Laying Competition in 2005. I always said that if I were ever NICF President I would make it my mission to bring the competition back - after all, there isn't a fitter in the land that wouldn't want UK ‘Fitter of the Year’ on his van,” commented Ian James, NICF President. To apply, all entrants must complete an online questionnaire. Twelve entrants will then progress to the practical trials on 26/27 May, at the FITA Training Centre in Loughborough. Six finalists will then be selected to take part in the final, at the Flooring Show in Harrogate (18/19 September). All applicants must be aged 18 years or over on 31 March 2016. Industry sponsors of the NICF Carpet Fitter of The Year 2016 Award include Ardex, F Ball, Ball & Young, Bostik, Carpenter Underlay, CFJ magazine, Cormar Carpets, Hanson Plywood Ltd, Interfloor, Lifestyle Floors, Roberts, Spotnails Maestri, The Stocklists, Tramex, Uzin and Which? Flower on Flooring

Interest grows in benefits of recycled flooring One of the emerging trends in the flooring sector for both retailers and manufacturers is that of recycling, regarding processing of product at the end of its useful life and also use of recycled materials in the creation of a variety of flooring products.
Working in partnership with Carpet Recycling UK, Kenburn states that it visits contractors and retailers to offer impartial advice on how best to recycle carpet waste, as well as rubber and PU underlay waste.
Examples of its many successes include Carpet Recycling UK members Horne Brothers, based in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, which recently took delivery of a Kenburn ‘Carpet Crusher’ to recycle old uplifted carpet and underlay waste. This has allowed it to operate a 'zero to landfill' policy that saves thousands of pounds in skip costs.
Horne Brothers
Gillies of Broughty Ferry
David Hudspeth Carpets
Retailer Gillies of Broughty Ferry, Dundee has also implemented a zero to landfill policy since purchasing a Carpet Crusher. All uplifted carpet and underlay is processed by the machine before being sent to power concrete kilns as a replacement to coal.
David Hudspeth Carpets in Leyburn, North Yorkshire is another to have implemented zero to landfill and finds this makes an interesting topic of conversation.
Since its formation by Altro and Polyflor in 2009 to divert vinyl flooring from landfill, Recofloor reports that well over 2,700 tonnes of smooth and safety off-cuts and smooth uplifted flooring has been collected through the UK’s national vinyl flooring recycling scheme and turned into new products, including flooring and traffic cones.
Recofloor’s Jane Gardner comments: “This genuinely sustainable option for end-of-life flooring offers great potential for the future of recycling, benefiting us all. The scheme has 650-plus collectors across the UK and Ireland and continues to grow.
50 March 2016
Over 2,700 tonnes of smooth off-cuts and smooth uplifted flooring has been collected through the UK’s national vinyl flooring recycling scheme and turned into new products, including flooring and traffic cones. “Recofloor’s flexible, cost-effective and efficient collection system is designed for all levels of the flooring supply chain, from individuals to the largest contractors. Participants can benefit from up to 75% savings in disposal cost savings. Demonstrating their commitment to environmental responsibility can also help to differentiate and develop their businesses.” Core Funding support from Cormar Carpets, Lifestyle Floors/Headlam, Desso, ege, Milliken, Balsan and Marlings has enabled Carpet Recycling UK to further exceed its original 25% by 2015 landfill diversion goal: 125,000 tonnes of carpet were reused, recycled or recovered for energy in 2015, equivalent to a landfill diversion rate of 31%. CRUK director Laurance Bird says: “With ongoing support from core funders and members, whose commitment and support has driven growth in recycling capacity, there is huge scope for recycling rates to rise further.
“Enquiries grew by 15% overall last year with a particularly sharp growth of 96% from retailers and flooring contractors seeking to reduce their environmental impact and explore potential for cost savings through recycling and changing waste disposal practices." CRUK continues to look for new members, with further details available from Marie Rhodes on 0161 440 8325.
F&X Carpets Gordon Hugo says its new Aevita style Ara and Lyra carpets offer more than just softness, strength and stain-resistance:
“Aevita carpet fibre is made entirely from recycled plastic bottles giving us a fibre with great all-round performance. However, we also knew that simply delivering a carpet made from recycled materials is only part of the story and so we have used our manufacturing expertise to make sure Aevita ticks all the right boxes for homeowners too." Mr Hugo states that his company has concentrated on a more wool-like appearance, with less gloss and richer colour.
"Both Ara and Lyra are stain-resistant, but it is the fibre’s ability to resist wear that makes them hugely attractive choices." Mr Hugo says the end result provides "exceptional underfoot comfort" in the form of a soft, strong and recycled carpet. NEWS Tailored training
Not only does the The Academy for Excellence in Flooring train the most skilled installers in their respective fields through its Master Installer programme, it also works with a number of companies to develop bespoke course content, with the aim of improving flooring knowledge. With over 200 people trained across the B&Q customer services department, builders’ merchants and retail chains, the Academy helps to improve knowledge, even for experienced professionals. When Tile Giant took new lines from Quick-Step Impressive laminate and Livyn luxury vinyl, the Academy developed a bespoke course content based on improving practical, technical and product know-how for all branch and head office managers. The trickle-down effect means this knowledge is shared on the shop-floor and in meeting rooms, helping staff at the retail chain to gain confidence in the products they sell, as well as pass accurate advice on to customers.
“Our bespoke courses are becoming increasingly popular with large retailers that want to maximise the leverage of the Quick-Step name through improved product knowledge and technical expertise across a large number of staff,” explains Lee Thompson, technical manager. “Yet the model is just as applicable to smaller retailers wanting to improve sales. We can tailor course content to particular requirements and remember that more knowledgeable sales and customer service teams are ones more willing to lend their expertise to customers. This is something that can help a customer to feel valued and more confident that they have found the right store to buy from.” The Academy for Excellence in Flooring can develop course content across a number of specialist areas in wood, laminate and luxury vinyl flooring for retailers of varying employee numbers. DOMOTEX 2016 Review – Part 2
Spending on trending Investment, innovation and inspiration set the agenda for 2016 While Europe remains in the doldrums, the UK is eyed with some envy by continental flooring companies as British consumer confidence appears to be holding up well and the Domotex show demonstrated renewed investment in the market. Hannover sets the trend agenda for the year and some key themes come through strongly in reviewing the latest ideas and launches at the event. The emergence of super-soft has been a boost for the carpet business across the industry for the last two years and product development to sustain this momentum has been a priority for manufacturers. Not least by this category’s market leader, Associated Weavers, who have followed up their sensational success with the iSense polamide yarn with the high profile launch of Invictus which aims to take polypropylene to a similar level of softness. Soft is becoming stronger with an emphasis on a more solid, high density pile to balance against performance and appearance retention with softness and notable offerings from Cormar and Cavalier have reinforced this trend. A fashion for naturals is reflected in an emphasis on textures – especially the knitted look that is turning plain carpets into ‘almost patterns’ and stripes into a more ‘crinkly’ assymetrical appearance with Wools of New Zealand leading the way on the latest designs and interesting offerings from Edel Telenzo and Brockway in particular. Stronger colours are everywhere and seem to have some sales increase to counter the criticism that they are just there to make the wall racks and tombolas look more interesting. Shades are more saturated rather than merely brighter – “bold but not shocking” says leading authority Joanna Ramsden of Wools of New Zealand. Lilacs, greens and blues appear to be doing well alongside an increasingly warmer and some darker range of greys. White is replacing grey in the “50 shades of ” category with a multitude of variations across all flooring types. Strangely the Olympic effect is a well known phenomenon in interior design and the UK did indeed buy more red, white and blue carpets and fabrics when we hosted the games so the effect this Summer is likely to be much brighter with vibrant Latin colours as Brazil’s own yellow and green floods our TV screens. An interesting marketing initiative we noted last month was the visible branding of Vorwerk rugs and it will be interesting to see if the kudos effect of buying a leading European brand connects with consumers. More generally, carpet companies seem increasing keen to chop up their broadloom to offer rugs options with attractive finishing options. In resilient flooring, a key new technology is making an impact. The direct printing of decors to a lacquer surface on laminate, LVT and cork surfaces is replacing the conventional paper print layer for higher end products. This gives some performance benefits – increasing the products resilience – but it also improves the appearance with an impressive depth to the image. Two alternative materials in resilient flooring also attracted special attention at Domotex. Adore have launched their excellent Regent range of LVT which combines bamboo fibres with vinyl to make a 100% sustainable floor with superb performance. Meanwhile, Granorte were displaying their latest cork-based floors with superb printing technology that now gives them a large portfolio of designs along with the specialised warmth and acoustic benefits that come with cork. Finally a tribute to both Interfloor and F Ball for investing in stunning new stands for Domotex along with Millennium Weavers who were first time exhibitors at the show.

Earthwerks Style is star Styl’iT was a star at Domotex as innovative Earthwerks came up with another idea that sets it apart from any ordinary LVT company. The launch of Styl’iT responds with some panache to the huge trend towards herringbone. Earthwerk’s designers have taken some of the most decorative options from the company’s popular Combo and Canto collections to create new patterns including classic herringbone, square alignment and brick bond plus some sosphisticated border options. This dryback LVT is available in 2 and 2.5mm thicknesses and comes in 12 set design options but with lots of opportunities for uniquely customised installations. “We have seen exceptional growth in the UK over the last year,” says Steve Evans of Earthwerks. “Our aim is to keep giving retailers the very latest ideas that consumers will react to while ensuring we keep competitive across all our ranges.” Also on show was the company’s stylish Mix’iT design kit. First previewed at Harrogate, the system makes it possible to create an impactful custom look with a simple combination of 8mm and 20mm wide coloured design strips with any of Earthwerk’s non-bevelled LVT ranges. Standard combinations are suggested to get you started but the inspiration is unlimited with the possible permutations! T + 32 87 30 68 50

Adore Flooring Bamboozling vinyl
Inventive Adore have announced a new class of flooring – adding B to the V of LVT! Bamboo is a brand new business and it is set for a fascinating future. “This takes us back to the forefront of technology,” says Adore’s Paul Brady. “Bamboo is an amazing material. This is more stable, more flexible, higher performance and 100% sustainable. All in all it’s a world beater!” Adore have patents pending on the new technology which has taken 18 months to develop and takes shredded bamboo and engineers it into the centre of an LVT plank to achieve unique performance. Marketed under the Regent name in three qualities, bamboo gives the plank exceptional dimension stability, easing installation and durability even in demanding environments. The bamboo core is highly water-resistant (the technology has previously been used in outdoor decking) and Adore adds its CleanTech anti-microbial/anti-bacterial treatment topped off with a Duramond wear layer. Adore are attacking the market in style with this new product – offering 24 residential options, 4-sided bevel, registered embossing on the top range and two plank sizes. DOMOTEX 2016 Review – Part 2 Cormar Carpets Sensation-all
Domotex was the first chance for Cormar to debut Sensation Supreme, the fifth in this family of best-selling soft carpets made with the company's 2-ply Luxelle polypropylene which was first seen in the market four years ago. The 'Supreme' tag denotes a deeper, denser pile plus an extra twist in the yarn which gives it a luxurious look and feel. The mix of popular plain and heather shades comes in a palette of greys, taupes, beiges and neutrals, in 4 and 5 metre widths. “We’ve had great success with our easy clean Sensation carpet collections over the past four years,” said David Cormack, marketing director of Cormar Carpets. “Building on that success we’ve worked hard to develop Sensation Supreme which is a heavyweight deeper pile carpet that capitalises on the soft touch trend with an added ‘twist’.” T 01204 881234

Granorte Cork innovation in style
Famed for its ability to push the boundaries of possibility with cork thanks to extensive investment in R&D, Granorte has realised a beautiful new aesthetic to digital printing technology that gives ceramic and wood looks a tempered aesthetic through the delicate appearance of detail from the real cork structure underneath. Designs include an array of parquet style wood effects and seven ceramic tile looks inspired by Mediterranean and North African abodes, each bearing the telltale markings of cork beneath for a delightfully warm overtone. Featuring Uniclic for fast installation and with a special Weartop Armour layer for resistance to wear and marking, vita décor proves that Granorte continues to innovate in new applications for cork. Despite this new innovation and fresh styles in its linoleum-topped cork, vita classic digital print and corium recycled leather floors, it is the manufacturer’s collections of beautiful cork aesthetics that made it really stand out at this year’s Domotex. Celebrating the creative possibilities of cork, these floors are extraordinary in their diversity. Granorte recycles the waste from wine stopper production across Portugal (and its own production waste) to create 94 different looks in plank and tile formats. T 01785 711131

Lano Taste of Luxury
The Taste of Luxury collection delighted at this year’s Domotex, as Lano showcased the premium residential collection that features the manufacturer’s best wool, SmartStrand Silk, bamboo and polyamide styles.
The show saw Lano proudly present two display units in a classy black finish, each captivating visitors with an array of high-end styles capturing the natural elegance of wool and bamboo, along with the luxurious softness of SmartStrand Silk and polyamide styles. The first Taste of Luxury wall display units are going into stores now, with lots more rolling out over the next few months. Along with new developments and colour updates in the SmartStrand collection, Lano also showcased the Touchdown collection, its impressive new range of supersoft carpets that includes the ever-popular Fascination and Imagination ranges, as well as the striking new Oblique range. Of course, enduring styles such as Startwist were also on show, with the manufacturer also launching a new rug programme. Lano also used the exhibition to launch its 2016-2017 Landscaping artificial grass collection, an area of strong growth that may interest many retailers as homeowner thoughts turn to outdoor areas this spring. Associated Weavers Invincible Invictus
Associated Weavers has been getting a lot of recognition in recent months for calling the market right on rolling out a new generation of super soft carpet. AW’s iSense polyamide yarn set the agenda for 2015 and rated as the company’s best launch ever. And for ambitious AW, when you reach the top, the only way is up! Invictus is the follow-up story for 2016 and is set for similar success.
Invictus is polypropylene-based and therefore more competitively priced but the same innovative yarn engineering that invented iSense has been applied to Invictus to give that blend of performance and softness that has become so popular with consumers. The range was launched last Autumn, just in time for a bumper pre-Christmas selling season with two weights of plain – Sirius and Orion and two heathers – Pegasus and Perseus. The new year starts with three additions to the mix – a competitive multi-width lustrous plain at 40oz called Scorpius, heavyweight Hyperion in a clever bi-colour version of the Invictus yarn, and the clean finish Hercules Twist. “Retailers had a massive December right up to Christmas with these ranges and the new year has started strongly,” says Steve Elliott of Associated Weavers. “These carpets are what people want. Young people don’t think twice about buying synthetic carpet – they react to the product in front of them and both iSense and Invictus sell themselves on that basis.” More colour is coming in these ranges starting with vibrant Séduction Royale which will debut in the UK this Spring.
“These carpets are what people want. Young people don’t think twice about buying synthetic carpet – they react to the product in front of them and both iSense and Invictus sell themselves on that basis.” Steve Elliott Associated Weavers
Scorpius, Hercules and Hyperion
But despite all the super-soft sales frenzy, AW have not forgotten the mainstream market that buys its core StainAway collection in huge quantities. “This is also the year of the Stainaway re-launch,” says Steve. “We’re working across more than 20 ranges in this collection to bring them right up to date with a fresh approach and modern marketing.” Finally there’s a sparkle in the eye of AW with the launch of one of those ranges that is supposed to be a niche product but ends up getting a lot of attention. Surprise creates a subtle sparkle with a clever construction of polyamide yarn with a lurex thread in either silver or gold, depending on the base colour. The effect is classy enough to be seen beyond the bedroom and is bound to be an eye-catcher in store.

Brockway Carpets New dimensions
Brockway is building on the success of its flagship 80/20 Dimensions Plain range, launched last year to great acclaim, by introducing Dimensions Heathers and Stripes, a revamp of the Jubilee range.
In Dimension Heathers there are now three new weights and nine new colours giving the consumer 32 heather colours to choose from. Together with eight stripes, the Dimensions collection is going to add up to 74 colourways, putting it at the centre of Brockway’s core business. Brockway’s exhibition stand was proudly carpeted in the company’s Cavendish Weave, a stylish knitted effect 100% wool loop range that was launched a year ago and has become a best seller in the craft trend that is increasingly popular with consumers. “We’ve had a really positive reaction to this over the last few months and seeing it in a large piece here in Hannover has attracted a lot of interest,” said Charles Annable of Brockway. Beaulieu Changing mindsets
Beaulieu International Group (B.I.G.) have moved beyond trends into ‘mindsets’ to set the agenda for the future of flooring in Europe. Operating in 14 countries, Ideal carpets, Real needlefelt and BerryAlloc LVT and laminates brands are most familiar to UK retailers and Beaulieu extends its mindset concept across every part of its business. “Mindsets offer so much more than than just some colour trends,” says Mimi Lamote who heads marketing at B.I.G. “Mindsets reveal your lifestyle, what you find important in life and how you experience the world around you.” Taking in inputs from designers and trend watchers worldwide, B.I.G. has identified four key mindsets which they call Sense, Source, Bloom and Glam. These mindsets are the basis around which the collections of the different product groups are built. Sense reflects the Back-to-Basics trend – a response to the over complication and over-consumption of the modern world. This translates in to light, bright interiors where simplicity is key. Soft pastels in carpets, light oaks or even whites in resilient flooring emphasise the purity of the approach. Source is all about the natural world – tactile surfaces and that hand-made look – what Beaulieu calls “non-digital experiences” – the life beyond the screen! Warm, cosy colours, natural materials and strong textures – “the beauty of roughness” reflect this theme of authenticity. Source
Bloom
Sense
Bloom is both natural and bright. B.I.G.’s designers says that in contemporary housing the line between indoors and outdoors is blurring with large bay windows, folding doors onto patios and winter garden conservatories. Bright floral colours come to the fore from sunny yellows to fuchsia and purple, Shades of green are combined with orange and blues. Glam is the final mindset and lets in a little bling to cheer us up in these post-recession days! “The more we read in the media the less we care,” says Beaulieu International Group. “We want to enjoy life without feeling guilty.” The theme is picked up in the trend towards silky polyamide carpets and the strange attraction of metallic textures, glittery highlights and dark, rich floor finishes. “We’re well aware that customers choose their floors not only on the basis of functionality – there’s an emotional side to it as well,” says Mimi Lamote. By identifying these 4 global mindsets and using them in our collections, our customers (from the trade) Can be sure that our collections are in line with the needs and wishes for end consumers all around the world. DOMOTEX 2016 Review – Part 2 Balta Shining light
Balta’s Satino collection of super-soft carpets proved one of the shining lights at this year’s Domotex, as the manufacturer welcomed visitors from across Europe and the UK keen to see the range in closer detail. With Satino Royale and Satino Romantica, retailers throughout the UK can enjoy exceptional softness and resilience in a package that brings a sense of luxury in either specification. Whether the 1,650g/m2 pile weight of Romantica or the 2,500g/m2 pile of Royale, these carpets feature the silk-like look and exceptional softness of Imprel Finesse and the comfort, warmth and stability of Twinback combination woven and needle felt backing. “We used Domotex to showcase the 12 sophisticated neutral tones of Satino Royale and Romantica to visitors from across Europe, including many from the UK, and the response was nothing short of extraordinary,” says Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director for Balta Group. Such has been the initial success of Satino that Balta is working hard to develop further innovation within the sector and to expand the current number of styles available under the brand. IVC Group Demonstrating design
IVC Group’s impressive stand at this year’s Domotex demonstrated the power of its residential brands, Leoline and Avenue, to provide homeowners with on-style flooring packed with great performance features.
With new UK launches for both brands in Mercury XT for Leoline and Ultimate Style for Avenue, as well as updates to existing ranges, Domotex not only showcased the latest in style and technical developments from both brands, but also revealed the work that goes on behind the scenes. “Our in-house design development is something we are very proud of and it is responsible for keeping Avenue and Leoline at the very forefront of flooring style,” explains Victoria Hemelaer, product manager for both brands. “Well before we launch a new collection, we spend a huge amount of time researching trends. New designs seen at Domotex showed this development in action, with more rustic woods, greys, contemporary stone tiles and a mineral look with our metallic prism chips.” Underlining the design found in all Avenue and Leoline floors, the organisers of Domotex selected flooring from Leoline’s European portfolio for its Innovations@Domotex feature area, a major attraction for show goers looking for the most forward-thinking flooring available today. Leoline also commissioned rising Belgian fashion designer, Tess Taelman to create stunning coats made from Leoline cushion flooring under the #myfashion concept with extraordinary results. Wools of New Zealand Leading yarn innovation
Domotex is the foundation of the Wools of New Zealand sales and marketing activity. This year saw them have their biggest ever presence at the show. Floor styling was the chosen theme and it certainly worked. The showcase carpet on the floor was the Laneve branded Biscayne range from Crucial Trading in Raven and Mascarpone. To highlight the purity and whiteness of New Zealand wool, a 3.5 metre high yarn sculpture was the focal point at the front of the stand, which achieved the desired result with many onlookers stopping for photos.

Colour and Product Trends
WNZ, through Joanna Ramsden their creative manager (pictured above left), leads the way when it comes to colour and trends and it is always fascinating to see their development work. This year was no exception. The new colour palette comprises 88 colours and is very ‘international’ in look, reflecting the fact that the world is a smaller place. ‘Greige’ remains popular although warmer colours are coming through to combat the cool greys. Pink is strong in various strengths and tones while the blue palette is very eclectic. Inspired by the ‘souks,’ there is a growing move towards stronger orangey, spicy tones, all of which work well with dark woods. Yarn developments saw some stunning work in both twists and tweeds, (indeed, it was noticeable to see that heather yarns were coming back) with the inspiration coming from both men’s and women’s fashion. The products offer an alternative to stripes and plains. Irregular chevrons, for instance, create a stunning visual effect and would work well in a residential or commercial environment. Rosstan Mazey New Chief Executive of Wools of New Zealand Rosstan has a strong commercial background. After studying law and commerce, with a major in marketing, at university, Rosstan worked for five years for Dairy Crest in the UK where he focussed on new product development and brand building. From there he returned to New Zealand to take up a global marketing role for Zespri kiwifruit before moving in 2012 to T&G, a New Zealand based international produce marketing organisation. Commenting on his new role, Rosstan said: “I enjoy the challenge of promoting New Zealand products on the world stage. The Wools of New Zealand business is a young company and has a ‘start up’ mentality and a spirit to challenge the status quo. The opportunities for the business and the sector appealed to me and I was attracted by the fact that the business is 100% grower owned – committed growers investing in the market development of strong wool. “Our aim is to derive more value for our farmers and our customers. We have recently commenced a strategic review, which has been an ‘inclusive’ process involving all the team. It has been important to build the strategy from the bottom up – and not the top down as we have a lot of know-how and insight to draw from our own people. We have some exciting and potentially game-changing commercial activities in the pipeline and I look forward to working with our people to deliver them.” from The Stocklists

Anniversary off to a tee!
2016 marks the 60th anniversary of one of the flooring industry’s longest running charity events. The Kidderminster Carpet Manufacturers’ National Golf Tournament has raised over £1.5 million for charities since its inception.
This year’s event, which is being held on May 17th and 18th, is kindly sponsored by Mr Tomkinson. Day One is a four ball team event while Day Two is a 2-ball team event. The designated charities are Macmillan Cancer Support and several smaller charities local to Kidderminster. To mark the event, an ‘alfresco dining experience’ is being held in the evening of Tuesday 17th May at the Stourport Manor hotel. Entry forms will be available shortly. Shaun Lewis, Sales Director at Brockway Carpets (pictured centre), is Chairman and said: “This is a wonderful achievement and speaks volumes for the generosity of our industry. I sincerely hope that in this anniversary year we can encourage former players to return as well as welcome new players to the event which is a fun two days. You can play either day or both days – it is entirely up to you! With the help, and support of the industry at large, I am confident we can build on the fantastic fund raising we have achieved over the previous 59 years. Business is improving and there is a bit of confidence in the market place which is encouraging.” T 01562 824 737 shaun.lewis@brockway.co.uk

Focus on pure cork
With interest from homeowners in more beautiful and sustainable flooring on the rise, cork is enjoying a renaissance and Granorte is ideally positioned to take retailers to this lucrative audience.
The Portuguese manufacturer is regarded as one of the most influential in cork with a range of products that have continually innovated, including the design award winning Nu Spa collection of baths and sink units. However, it is Granorte’s range of cork flooring that offers huge potential for flooring retailers across the country. Scott Brady of Granorte UK, explains how the brand will bring a tailored offering to UK homeowners: “Granorte has a vast collection of cork flooring, with leather-topped, direct print, linoleum and vinyl options, but for many homeowners it is cork’s natural aesthetic that makes such a dramatic impression. With this in mind, we are developing an updated display that brings a tailored selection of Granorte’s extraordinary collection of natural cork products, helping the product to become a focal point within stores. “This revised display will also allow us to bring retailers a better service, reducing the number of options and helping our identity to remain clear and true. Remember, that too much choice is often a confusing thing for homeowners and so a presentation that brings cork flooring in its purest form is bound to have a positive impact. Of course the full Granorte collection will still be available to order, including the sublime style of our Corium leather or the innovative direct-print wood and tile effects of Vita.” With Scott on board, Granorte will also be working hard to improve coverage right across the UK, providing retailers with excellent pre and after-sales support. Building upon the firm foundation already in place, Granorte cork flooring is sure to become a starring product line in stores looking for the latest in products to fulfil customer demand for fabulous design and innovation. Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,
any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see
The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 68
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.interfloor.com
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!
Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.
www.interfloor.com
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter
• shedding • pulled loops
Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 70
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling
Flattening
Shedding
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Shading
Indentations
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet
SAFE
Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
DURABLE EASYCARE
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
Comfort
COMFORT
Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.
Safety
The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. March 2016 77

Tip Sheared
Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
LOOP PILE
Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.
