Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view www.beautifulflooring.co.uk Contact: Paul Phillips Tel: 01892 549050 paul@atbrm.com

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any

fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see what you would actually use

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Increase sales • ‘Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with point-of-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Access professional services • Business services • Financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings • Regional workshops • Supplier presentations • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

• Ensure you understand any rules that may limit your flexibility to run your business the way you want

Regular Maintenance Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur. Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers! Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet. Use only WOOLSAFE approved products WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.

The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.

Periodic Cleaning When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company. If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE approved products. Look for the WOOLSAFE Mark on the bottle or package. It is best to engage the services of a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning company. To get a really expert job done entrust the work to a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. These companies are fully trained, have been in business for a considerable length of time, are members of one or more recognised professional trade associations related to the cleaning industry and have a reputation for top quality service. And they use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents on your wool carpets and rugs!

If you have a problem with a carpet or rug that requires an independent inspector, a network of carpet complaint investigators, trained and registered by The WOOLSAFE Organisation is available throughout the UK and Ireland. WOOLSAFE Registered Inspectors have extensive experience in investigating the causes for carpet complaints based on their practical involvement with carpets and rugs over many years. They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers, retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can carry out or commission tests where required, and will provide comprehensive reports. To contact an inspector in your area call 01943 462127, email: inspector@woolsafe.org, or visit: www.woolsafe.org / Private Householder / Registered Inspectors

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre THE BEST CARPET WOOL Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

SAFE

DURABLE

Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.

Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.

Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLES

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

SHEDDING

The original carpet tile

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPS

This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

• shedding • pulled loops

SPROUTING

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

SHADING

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

STATIC

Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOL

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair.

Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.

A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

an informed choice.

THE STOCKLISTS September 2013

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

PILE REVERSAL (SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONS

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.

The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet.

The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

FLATTENING

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

SOILING

Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or

any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave

sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust

- which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

WE’RE AT HOME THIS HARROGATE

Our stand at Domotex earlier this year

As many of you will know, we are not going to Harrogate this year – for the first time in almost 30 years. Our parent company, the Edel Group, has decided to concentrate its exhibition effort on Europe’s largest floorcovering event, Domotex in Hanover in January instead – and we do urge retailers to plan in a visit this impressive event, where we have a large stand and can present a much larger number of new concepts and ranges. Our new showroom at Elland

However, now we’ve got our new offices and showroom in Elland (between Halifax and Huddersfield), we’d be delighted if any customer up in Yorkshire wants to pop in for a coffee and to see us here – we’re not all that far away, just off junction 24 of the M62.

Our shades of grey hit the spot! We’re delighted with the reaction to our two new Tube Collection colourways – they both flying out of the factory! What’s the secret? “They are both softer, grey-scale stripes which are very much in tune with today’s favoured home décor palettes,” explains operations manager Lesley Inman. That, coupled with the Tube Collection’s successful synergy of quality with value continues to make Piccadilly 266 Piccadilly 232 Green Park Leicester Square the range popular with customers up and down the country. “Customers are looking for durability as much as value and the 100% wool yarns used in the Tube Collection are more robust, easy to maintain, don’t pill, are moth proof and, with additional Scotchgarding, stain proof too,” says Lesley. And with competitive prices in line with that sort of quality, “Our customers are finding it a relatively easy product to sell.”

New agent for Ireland We’re delighted to welcome a new agent to our sales team: Larry White will henceforth be selling our products in the Munster and Connaught provinces of the Republic of Ireland (Leinster will still be covered by our agent for Northern Ireland, Gary O’Boyle). We’ve not had a dedicated agent in the Republic for some time, so Larry – who has a wealth of carpet sales experience under his belt – is a welcome addition to the team and we look forward to meeting many new customers on the Emerald Isle soon! 30

FlooringNews Star still shining Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Startwist collection by Lano Carpets has been relaunched to include a brand new quality that is set to appeal to homeowners looking for luxurious and practical carpet. The new Startwist Elite carpet combines great performance with a plush texture thanks to its improved two-ply 100% Lanoset polypropylene construction. Giving a much thicker and softer feel with a pile weight of 50oz/sqyd for exceptional comfort, this carefully developed fibre also has a beautiful wool-like appearance to please those looking for a natural looking floorcovering. Designed to have widespread appeal, Startwist Elite is available in a sophisticated colour palette of muted shades including acorn, cornstalk and silver to allow it to slot in to most interior schemes. “Sitting alongside the entry-level Startwist Edition and the mid-range Startwist Supreme, this latest addition to the Startwist collection is sure to entice retailers looking to update their product portfolio and offer customers a brand new carpet style,” comments Heidi Debakker, product manager, Lano Carpets. “The main attraction of Startwist Elite is its sumptuous texture with its inherent toughness and easy cleanability also a major draw. Crucially, Startwist Elite has the resilience to stand up to the rigorous demands of everyday life, but it also delivers that much longed-for feeling of luxury.” Startwist Elite is available in both four and five metre widths to accommodate large and small rooms and to minimise wastage. The carpet is protected with 7-year wear and 10-year stain warranties to ensure ultimate peace of mind.

Balta Broadloom is proving its continued commitment to design development and diversity by introducing a striped version of its much-loved flagship carpet, Gala. Due to launch in September, Gala & Stripes has been reconfigured and now presents two designs in one collection, with a selection of plains and complementary stripes sitting harmoniously side by side. “Gala consistently ranks as one of our most popular products, partly thanks to its beautiful loop pile texture that gives a natural appearance, as well as the unbeatable performance benefits such as ease of maintenance and durability that come with its 100% StainSafe polypropylene construction,” comments Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta. “The next logical step was therefore to reinterpret this winning formula by adding an ontrend striped design to refresh the collection and open up new possibilities for retailers.” Offering a total of 18 choices, including 14 plains and 4 stripes, Gala & Stripes is a comprehensive collection that has all the design bases covered. With attractive plain colours to choose from, such as deep Ash Brown and pale Champagne Mist, and bold tonal stripes including rich Fireplace and contemporary grey Rock, Gala & Stripes allows homeowners to create coordinated interiors that have that designer edge. Plains are available in both four and five metre widths, and Stripes in four metre width, with a choice of either synthetic or Ultratex Quick+ felt backings. Gala & Stripes is bleach-cleanable and comes with seven-year wear and 10-year stain safe warranties to suit even the busiest of homes. T +32 56 62 22 11 from The Stocklists

Game on UK manufacturer of subfloor preparation products and flooring adhesives, F. Ball and Co. Ltd., took centre stage at the London 2012 Games last year, thanks to its sprayable adhesive solution, Styccobond S930. The high performance adhesive proved to be the ideal solution for Tufts Flooring Ltd, who installed the 8,000m2 vinyl floorcovering, depicting the River Thames snaking through London’s East End, which was the final floor display for the London 2012 opening ceremony last July. The decorative floorcovering is the largest ever printed stage floor in the world. Specifically designed to withstand the heavy volumes of traffic, rehearsals and equipment over a six-week period. The flooring was installed outside in the wettest June on record for over 100 years.

Closer collections Cormar Carpets has boosted the number of its Express Collect centres throughout England and Scotland, from 10 to 16. It means a large majority of retailers are now within a 30 minute drive of one of Cormar’s Express Collect centres where they can arrange next day pick-up of orders placed by 2pm. Said Craig Marshall, Cormar’s logistics manager: “The launch of Express Collect in 2011 has been a huge success for us and something we’ve been building on to make it even better for our customers.

Project Manager for Le Mark Group, Dave Cartwright, said: “The speed in which the spray adhesive could be applied and dry was crucial to the success of the installation. Limited by installation time schedules and the terrible weather, we were glad that the Styccobond S930 didn’t let us down.” Styccobond S930 helped overcome time constraints with its high bond strength and impressive 10m2 per litre coverage capabilities. Dean Tanner, Director of Tufts Flooring, was delighted with the project. He said: “Being a part of the London 2012 Games was a unique, albeit pressured, opportunity. The end result was flawless; the vinyl sheet looked perfect from start to finish, and not one join or section of the vinyl lifted, despite all the heavy rain, standing puddles of water and rehearsals before the opening ceremony.” T 01538 361 633

“We regularly deliver orders within 48 hours but this service adds another dimension, in most occasions, allowing retailers and contractors a next day service. There is obviously a demand for this free service - whether it’s customers that need an early start or retailers and contractors working outside their locality - which is why we have expanded the number of centres. Also more centres means less travelling so it saves on fuel which is a big plus!” The 16 locations are: Greenford; Crawley; Luton; Reading; Solihull; Cambridge; Exeter; Portbury; Cardiff; Portsmouth, Manchester, Gateshead, Nottingham; Leeds; Bury and Motherwell. Express Collect operates from Monday to Friday and can be arranged through Cormar’s sales office or its online B2B web portal. Retailers who have already taken advantage of the service include Mark Flood, sales director of Style Carpets, Blackburn: “It’s really convenient. We can promise our customer that we will be able to fit a carpet the next day, confident that we’ll have it in our hands by then.” Stephen Porter, proprietor of B&J Carpets of Heanor, Derbyshire: “Once a customer chooses a particular carpet and specifies a day for fitting, it can be very difficult to persuade them to change their mind. If we don’t have the product in stock, we might lose the order, but with the new Cormar Collection System we can still agree to fit it next day. No other carpet supplier is offering anything like this.” T 01204 881234 www.cormarcarpets.co.uk

‘Outstanding’ centre celebrates The FloorSkills training centre opened its doors this Summer to hundreds of people involved in the flooring industry. The centre was declared officially open by Richard Bailey, managing director of Floorwise, in a ceremony attended by students, staff, supporters, manufacturers and guests. The centre based in Solihull, Birmingham recently achieved an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted report in a recent training provider partnership inspection and this gave a celebratory atmosphere to the day along with glorious weather and a barbeque. FloorSkills offer a wide range of floor covering courses and an apprenticeship programme that boasts more learning hours than any other flooring apprenticeship in the country. Training manager of the centre, Matt Bourne said: “We are proud of our training centre and wanted to celebrate all the work that has gone into it. The open day gave us the chance to demonstrate the quality of training we provide to a wider audience.” T 01564 703900 www.floorskills.co.uk 34 September 2013

Worthing winner ECE Architecture, based in Worthing, West Sussex, has specified Broadrib and Array carpet tiles from Heckmondwike FB as part of the refurbishment of Portland House, on behalf of Adur and Worthing Council. The project involved the supply of over 2000m2 of Heckmondwike carpet tiles for the office refurbishment. This included 708 m2 of Array in purple, which was complemented by 415m2 of Broadrib in purple and 444 m2 of Array in blue, which co-ordinates with 190 m2 in blue. On this project, the accent colours were used to define the walkways around the perimeter of offices and for demarcation of the fire exits, as well as to add design and detail. Gary Kelly, Architect at ECE in Worthing, said: “We had specified Heckmondwike carpet before and particularly like the Array range and how it can be complemented by the accent colours, for which we chose blue and purple. The accent colours clearly mark the large open plan work areas into zones for ease of navigating the building, as well as breaking up large areas of flooring and adding an extra element of design.” Array is the latest addition to Heckmondwike FB’s creative flooring range and is proving popular for both commercial and education environments. Abby Chandler, Marketing Manager for Heckmondwike FB, said: “Our new Array tiles are providing a very popular choice when used with our Broadrib tile to suit a wide range of commercial and educational environments. They were the perfect choice for this refurbishment project as they allow for the creation of a contemporary and durable work space.” T 01924 406161

Back to the future Flooring companies are saving on both disposal costs and on-site space through participation in Forbo’s Back to the Floor scheme, which is reporting steadily increasing collection volumes of its waste flooring off-cuts for recycling. Material types accepted include Marmoleum, Flotex and smooth vinyl installation off-cuts, including Eternal, Forbo’s core project vinyl range, as well as clean off-cuts from the Novilon and Novilux cushioned vinyl ranges, which are more residential brands. All can all be recycled back into new Forbo products. By the end of 2013 Forbo Tessera Carpet Tiles will also be included in the Back to the Floor scheme. Back to the Floor Scheme Co-ordinator, Matt Charlton said: “The scheme is going from strength to strength as more companies sign up and regular volumes are being back-hauled to Forbo for recycling.” Launched last year, Back to the Floor has now established a number of drop-off sites for Marmoleum off cuts across the UK, from Glasgow to London and the South West. Flooring contractors, installers and distributors can contact Back to the Floor 0161 355 7618 for more information and to sign up to the scheme, which can offer potential cost-savings as opposed to landfill. Registered Back to the Floor participants are provided with colourcoded polythene bags and bulk bags which can be collected from site, or dropped off at participating distributors, when filled with the specified materials. Furnishing a new future for SMG Two of the U.K.’s leading independent home furnishing Buying Groups, The Minerva Furnishers Guild and SMG The National Furnishing Group, have announced that they have agreed to form a collaboration arrangement that will enable them to formally work together to promote each other’s organisations as their preferred partner for the furniture and flooring sectors respectively. SMG will also be offering Minerva members access to their comprehensive ‘Business Services’ benefits either through their full membership package or as a separate category of membership to retailers who do not currently operate carpet and flooring departments. The joint venture commences with all SMG members being invited to attend The Minerva Members Show which will be held at The International Centre in Telford on Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd October 2013. Additionally, Minerva members will be invited and encouraged to visit the next Buying Group’s National Flooring Show at Cranmore Park in May 2014. Following finalisation of this arrangement, SMG’s Executive Chairman, Chris Moffat commented: “We at SMG are delighted to have come to this unique Collaboration arrangement with The Minerva Furnishers Guild. The synergy between our respective Groups is remarkable and I believe that this arrangement will prove extremely beneficial for both our Retail Members and Approved Suppliers alike. A number of our major carpet and flooring suppliers have already agreed to be represented by SMG at the Minerva Members Show in Telford in October and we will of course, be encouraging as many members as possible to attend this prestigious and long established event.” Manufacturers and suppliers are also set to benefit immensely from this arrangement through additional PR and promotional exposure that will inevitably be aimed at a larger nationwide audience of quality independent retailers. Fight them on the bleaches! Cornets not carpets The sun has put flooring in the shade this summer. While the High Street enjoyed its best summer since 2006, furniture and flooring suffered its worst decline since last August. Total retail sales showed real-term growth of 4.4% (2.2% on a likefor-like basis) as the good weather boosted food and clothing sectors. But the great outdoors kept consumers away from buying for interiors and the retail parks were especially quiet. Most manufacturers reported a slow first quarter this year and a pick up in sales in April and May expired in the heat of July. Performances of 10% or more below target have been reported by many major flooring companies. Of the market leaders who report their figures in public, Carpetright said sales had fallen by a “double-digit percentage” and specifically blamed the heatwave. “The last few weeks have been more difficult. Consumers have tended to shop more for outof-home products,” chief executive Darren Shapland said. Leading flooring distributors Headlam issued a warning in July saying the first half earnings would be about 10% down. Meanwhile Victoria Carpets revealed the cost of its bitter boardroom battle last year as it reported a pre-tax loss of £3.5m in the year ending March 30th. The company spent £600,000 talking to its shareholders and hosting a dramatic general meeting last October. Victoria chairman Geoffrey Wilding commented: “2013 was the year when the chickens came home to roost at Victoria. Over recent years Victoria’s financial results have been sustained by overseas profits generated in a buoyant Australian economy. However, with a decline in the Australian market from early 2012, the underlying issues – poor execution of key strategies, failure to address the main issues facing the company and a lack of focus on shareholder value by previous boards and management – were exposed in the financial results for the year ended March 30, 2013.” Better news for the flooring trade came from the housing sector in mid-August with reports of a 30% increase in first time buyers and modest 1.3% house price growth over the last quarter fuelling consumer confidence. Latest figures show that since the launch of the help-to-buy equity loan scheme in April, there have also been 10,000 reservations for new build homes.

WoolSafe has decided to take on the fight to promote the cleanability of natural fibre in the face of the sustained promotion of bleach-cleanable polypropylene, Following a meeting at the British Wool Marketing Board, WoolSafe has made plans to come together with wool manufacturers to convey to consumers the advantages of choosing wool and wool-rich carpet when it comes to floorcoverings, and to address the fact that many homeowners are now selecting man-made fibres over natural ones due to the perceived ease of maintenance that these other types of yarns claim to offer. “Following the introduction and extensive marketing of ‘stain-resistant’ and so-called ‘bleach cleanable’ carpets, wool offerings have been losing market share in recent years to polypropylene fibre carpets, even though wool still ranks highly in terms of consumer desire,” explains Steve Bakker, Marketing Manager, The WoolSafe Organisation. “This new and closer working relationship between WoolSafe and wool carpet manufacturers will aim to promote the benefits of wool to consumers and demonstrate that wool is actually a very easily cleaned and simple to maintain carpet choice, without the need to use bleach. In actual fact, cleaning any carpet with bleach is not recommended considering the risk to the health of children, pets, carpet backing and sub-floor!”

“Wool is actually a very easily cleaned and simple to maintain carpet choice, without the need to use bleach” The WoolSafe Organisation will play an important role in this campaign by utilising its status as the leading authority when it comes to caring for wool. With tried-and-tested cleaning advice freely available to all consumers at www.woolsafe.org, and the free, awardwinning Carpet Stain Cleaning Guide app for iPhone and iPad users, WoolSafe is the ideal partner for British wool carpet manufacturers. “This partnership is still in the early stages of development, and it will be fantastic to work with and support various manufacturers over the coming months,” continues Steve Bakker. “At WoolSafe, we are committed to sharing our passion for wool, and indeed the correct care of wool, with consumers nationwide. We hope to equip them with all the information they need to choose wool with confidence when they next replace their flooring.” T 01943 850 817

Almost as soon as the royal baby was having his first nappy changed, the company had changed the wrapping on its flagship Cloud 9 Cirrus brand with a ‘Congratulations’ message alongside the Union Jack and the phrase: “Simply the Best for all Princes and Princesses.” “It’s just a bit of fun really in a goof period when we are all quite proud to be British,” says marketing manager Ann Shaw. “Its difficult for people to differentiate products in a crowded market but the support for UK manufacturing is a strong instinct among consumers.” T 01536 200502 www.underlay.com

Company feature: Abingdon

Growing up fast! Energetic adolescence as Abingdon challenges its elders

Martin Peace (left) and Robert Dight at Abingdon’s latest expansion last month. By the time you read this, the new yarn store will already be nearly full.

The company has a youthful appetite to challenge the conventions of the trade and just like any ambitious adolescent, there’s nothing they believe that can’t be done – and they want to do it now! When the industry went for long-term warranties, Abingdon went for warranties for life. When competitors introduced some multi-width options, Abingdon rolled it out across all their best sellers. Not happy with the speed or choice of yarn available? Make your own! Can’t get deliveries there quickly enough? Run your own trucks! Abingdon is unique in having it’s own on-site polypropylene yarn spinning facility. Control of the yarn is a key advantage for Abingdon. “Nobody can touch us on the coloration of our carpets,” says sales director Martin

Abingdon, at ten years old this month are still something of a ‘new kid on the block’ – enthusiastic, energetic, impatient and, no doubt, annoying, to some of the older competitors in the sector.

Peace. “Competitors have a lot of colours but they use them again and again on different ranges because that’s the yarn they’ve bought in. “We have the flexibility to create lots of colours that can be different in every range making us more fashion conscious. To us, the yarn is not a commodity, it is a marketing tool to give Abingdon some differentiation in the market place and to give consumers exactly what they want, “ he said. Recent investment in new extrusion technology in the plant in South Wales has upgraded the capacity for tri-colour yarn spinning. The flexibility this control offers was demonstrated recently in the new Innovations range where three colours are blended to give a subtle, textured effect. “We were able to do our own re-colouring during the development to get the mix exactly right,” said Martin.

“Because we have this flexibility, our customers see a lot of different types

of products in terms of colour, texture and design and then can make a real choice of what will suit their consumers.”

New heatsetting lines for bulkier, softer fibre

Wind turbines will generate 40% of requirement

And Abingdon is fast. The yarn spinning plant sits just 50 metres away from the Abingdon showroom. If a sales meeting in that showroom decides that a beige needs to be slightly more grey, the plant can produce the new yarn quickly enough for a rep to have the sampling in his hands three weeks later – and asking retailers what they think a day later! “Because we have this flexibility, our customers see a lot of different types of products in terms of colour, texture and design and then can make a real choice of what will suit their consumers,” adds Martin. Alongside yarn spinning is the heat-setting plant which added a major new production unit in April that steps heatsetting up to 48 ends from 24 ends to create a luxuriously bulky yarn. This development reflects the fashion for deeper saxonies of which Abingdon’s Ultimate Saxony (pictured left) – weighing in at up to 90 oz - is a superbly successful example, having been snapped up by the market since its appearance at the Solihull buying group event in May. Interestingly, with the new heatset capability and the yarn spinning control, Abingdon were able to react to retailer requests in Solihull for a more silver grey tone to add to the 12 colours of Ultimate Saxony. The new hue was in the sample books just a month later!

A core commitment to recycling converts carpet waste back into polypropylene pellets for use in automotive parts, reducing Abingdon’s landfill bill from £250,000 three years ago to virtually zero today. “We never stop looking all across the business for opportunities to improve,” says Abingdon production director Robert Dight. “The management team works right in the middle of the operation, both physically and I think emotionally, so we’re very close to what’s going on day-to-day. “We pride ourselves on the speed of our reactivity to new ideas and opportunities,” says Robert “Lots of companies say they listen to the trade and I’m sure they do. The difference is that when we listen, we can respond in weeks rather than months and try out more ideas to find the ones that really work,” T 01274 655662 www.abingdonflooring.co.uk

Integrated yarn production gives key control of product performance

Shiny new plant makes life more exciting for everyone but some of the other recent investment at Abingdon is a little more prosaic, but no less vital. The big ticket item is stock – the essential ingredient of successful service. Opened just last month is Abingdon’s new yarn store which has 65,000 ft2 of space for finished yarn to provide a huge buffer to meeting production demand without delays. At the other end of the process, Abingdon stores finished carpets ready to roll from 350,000 m2 of warehousing, about a third of which is in Kidderminster at the former Tomkinsons Carpets site. The Kidderminster warehouse is the base for the Alliance Distribution business which runs a fleet of 36 vehicles for twice-weekly and dedicated day deliveries across the UK. Abingdon wholly owns the operation and uses about 70% of its capacity, contracting to other manufacturers to share the costs for the rest.

A commitment to stock keeps service levels high

Investment in the latest route planning systems with the addition of GPS tracking for all the vehicles this year, means that the company can keep its promises on deliveries and react quickly to late and urgent orders. But while Abingdon is spending plenty of money on its future, they’re reckoning to save on it too with environmental schemes that are making a substantial difference to the business. Two wind turbines are being installed adjacent to the main factory which will generate up to 40% of the sites electricity demand with substantial savings for the energy intensive business of yarn production. from The Stocklists

The British Wool column Celebrating Wool Week with Homes & Antiques

British Wool is celebrating Wool Week with a special supplement in Homes & Antiques magazine which will focus on the fibre and its benefits. The 8-page feature will be on the shelf in October and goes to approximately 64,000 readers.

“The beauty of Homes & Antiques magazine is that we have a readership that is particularly keen on home-grown British products and is very receptive to those stories and messages around this theme,” Georgina Lucas of the magazine explained. Tim Booth added: “It is a great opportunity for our carpet and interior partners to be involved in a very stylish and informative promotion that is aimed at the consumer.”

British Wool promotes higher wool content for lasting appearance The British Wool Marketing Board will attend the Flooring Show at Harrogate this month and will be promoting the natural attributes of the fibre as the best solution for long-lasting carpet appearance. ‘Select the Best’, the BWMB’s theme for the show sets out to educate retailers why wool content – the percentage of wool within the carpet – is fundamental to its long term performance. It will highlight how quality British wool will make a carpet look better for longer.

Wool grown in the UK is globally regarded to be the strongest and most durable carpet fibre in the world. Commercial buyers continue to specify it for this robust quality and also for its inherent safety in fire situations.

Wool education will be fundamental to the BWMB’s activity at Harrogate and going forward as the BWMB reminds retailers to promote the core benefits of wool to their customers at a time when a decision to make a major investment for the home is often based on value. Tim Booth, the BWMB’s marketing manager explains: “We believe that wool ranges made by quality manufacturers, whilst initially may seem more expensive to the home owner, still remain the best value choice for good appearance over the long-term. This performance is fundamental to customer satisfaction. “We are saying to retailers that the customer needs to be aware of the detail and this will guide them to understand the long-term benefits of making the right choice. The higher percentage of wool content and that is where wool is at least eighty percent of the blend, is going to significantly improve the natural ability of the fibre to perform in the product.

‘Select the Best’ is our message to retailers at Harrogate and we want them to visit us so we can answer any questions they may have and take our leaflet on the subject for their in-store guidance.”

British Wool Marketing Board can be found at stand C9.

Campaign for Wool launches OneWool

The Campaign for Wool will be asking retailers, manufacturers and consumers to choose one great wool product this year at Harrogate and have the chance to win a Green Sheep –the symbol of the Campaign for Wool. OneWool is a simple promotion that we are running for Wool Week both here and in the USA where industry partners can take part of the Campaign for Wool by submitting their chosen wool product as a way of promoting it to their own partners. These products are then promoted via the usual media channels and will help to push wool forward during the October celebration which is held between 14th and 20th October this year. “The aim is to offer a really simple entry to participation in the Campaign and this can be used as a display item in-store and also for social media. It is also great for those that want to send out e-flyers to partners letting them know that they are supporting the Campaign for Wool,” said Bridgette Kelly of the Campaign for Wool. The OneWool promotion on the BWMB stand will simply ask visitors to the stand to fill in a form outlining their chosen favourite wool product. A draw will be held and the winner will be presented with a display model green sheep. 44 September 2013

Containing eight of the most popular plain and heather colours, in a fine tenth gauge finish, this dense pile carpet has enjoyed great success following the increased popularity of heavyweight stain resistant twists.

The popular SmartStrand collection, which is famed for its inherent stain and soil resistance, will be on show, and retailers will be encouraged to explore the many different qualities available. Including the textured Dramatic Flair carpet as well as the supersoft SmartStrand Silk, the SmartStrand collection will prove its versatility and diversity.

This area is well known to David after previously working with Brinton’s. David’s retail experience will be of valuable help and support to both the Company and his customers. As with all other members of the sales team, David’s knowledge adds further strength to the Company Team.

Lee joins, as Richard Wykes, his predecessor, retires. Lee was until recently working for Vanguard and before this had worked for both Associated Weavers & Abingdon Carpets. Feature: Kidderminster - The Carpet Museum

History comes home to Kidderminster The home of carpet heritage has offered an open invitation to the trade to come to Kidderminster, both to retrace its steps and to enjoy a venue that celebrates the quality, technology and craftsmanship of the industry.

Melvyn Thompson, the resident historian adds: “We have had a lot of support from the industry. We wanted to keep the place active and moving forward and we have some interesting equipment which is in regular use.” A three-quarter five-frame Jacquard Wilton loom which was re-built for the museum takes pride of place. The 100-year-old technology came from Woodward Grosvenor so is returning to its roots in the Stour Vale Mill. Fittingly, the weaver who retired on the loom is the same man who now gives demonstrations to visitors every Tuesday and Saturday at midday. The other ‘live’ attraction is a 27-inch spool Axminster loom which worked its passage with Tomkinsons Carpets in the 1950s before ending its commercial life with Carpets of Kidderminster in 2011.

“This was much better than expected with some fun hands-on bits, knowledgeable volunteers and lots more information panels than you might expect.” Special carpets have been woven for the centre by Adam Carpets, Brintons and Brockway – and Victoria Carpets have given them a piece of the Royal Wedding red carpet that took William and Kate up the aisle at Westminster Abbey. The Carpet Museum opened almost a year ago in Stour Vale Mill in Kidderminster, a Grade II listed building that was built by Henry Woodward in the early 1850s and then occupied by Woodward and his associate Benjamin Grosvenor to create Britain’s first steam powered carpet mill. Today, the building which now adjoins a Morrisons supermarket, is full of illustrious memories alongside modern interactive presentations which bring the history alive. Paula Kovacs, Museum Manager, commented: “The industry in the UK has got a lot smaller but we have a fine heritage to be proud of. When people see what is involved in making carpet, the eyes open wide at the technology and craftsmanship. “Since we opened we have had a lot of older people who have worked in the industry who bring their families to show them what it is all about. Now, as we become better known, we are seeing parties from schools and colleges and from various societies. “We have had a lot of support from the industry and if groups of people from carpet companies or any of the trade organisations are looking for a venue for a special meeting, event or celebration, this is the perfect place!”

70 September 2013

Reviews on the Trip Advisor website rate the place at a full five stars with comments such as “a great little museum” and a “bit of a gem”. One visitor commented: “This was much better than expected with some fun hands-on bits, knowledgeable volunteers and lots more information panels than you might expect.” Another said: “We brought a party of 35 people for a group visit. We were very impressed. The volunteers and staff brought it to life with their stories, It has interactive elements so it is suitable for children.” Paula Kovacs joked that some local visitors had said it was like coming back into work when they walked through the doors and crossing the generations, one visitor said: “We really enjoyed the Carpet Museum, I saw a loom like my father worked on and found a photo of my grandmother! Our son had a great history lesson finding out about what his grandparents and great grandparents did for a living.” Regular events, tours and lectures are promoted on the museum’s website and the building has facilities for meetings and functions. www.carpetmuseum.co.uk

Flower on Flooring News Playing the stain game There is a growing acceptance of man-made materials, such as polypropylene, in the manufacture of carpet, as consumers look for money-saving options which can be easily cleaned when spillages occur. Manufacturers have responded by extending the variety of choice on offer, with new product introduced on an increasingly regular basis. Associated Weavers, for example, reports that its StainAway collection of bleach-cleanable carpet has received enthusiastic response from retailers and consumers, leading to more investment by the company to provide its retail customers with additional choice to provide further sales potential. Its most recent additions are the 70oz Sophistication, 45oz Promenade and 30oz Bellaire.

“As a consequence of the increased demand for our Easy Clean qualities there was a demand from our retailers for a compact display unit that could promote several ranges at once. The new sales station, introduced last year has had a great reaction. It is free standing and takes up no more than one square metre of floor space," says Mr Cormack. James Caldwell, Crown Floors sales coordinator, agrees that economic conditions have driven sales in stain-free carpets: "It could be said that the growth in popularity we've seen with easy to clean carpets is less about their low maintenance nature and more to do with the reassurance they offer. Homeowners can trust these carpets a little more in their ability to stay on top of daily life. “They know that liquid, dirt, food or other mess will come into contact with their carpet at some point in its life, despite their best intentions, and a carpet that can be easily cleaned without fear of permanent staining is a big worry alleviated. This is even more

Sophistication has been an instant best-seller for Associated Weavers

Each includes a choice of 10 fashionable colours, with further options including a selection of widths, ranging from 2m to 5m, plus StainAway warranties of 10, 15 or 20 years. Free samples can also be selected, posted to the consumer which includes the details of their local retailer. The company has also updated its Harvest Heathers Collection, which has been a well-established favourite within the StainAway brand. Consumers can now choose any of the three weights on offer, in addition to the selection of new colours recently introduced. David Cormack, Cormar Carpets marketing director, says the economic downturn has seen consumers seek value-for-money carpets and practicality has become a top priority for many as they increasingly look for hardwearing, lower priced and lower maintenance carpets. “During this period we have really established our family of easy clean ranges - the Primo qualities, Apollo and the hugely successful Sensation collection which was developed to be a much softer, more tactile carpet collection reflecting the current trend for lustre and handle. Sensation is a range that sits within our Easy Clean range as a flagship product. In the past six months, in light of its popularity, we have developed a light weight version of Sensation called New Feeling, as well as a new Sensation Heathers option,” he says. Cormar has launched a smart Easy Clean sales station to meet retailers’ demand 72 September 2013

Even the pinstripe woven Crown Wilton is bleach cleanable

relevant when you consider the demand for natural tones, with stain resistant carpets meaning that lighter shades can keep looking good even in a busy family home. And with many Crown Floors ranges offering a long stain warranty and advertised as bleach cleanable, even in the pinstripe woven Crown Wilton, this reassurance is even more satisfying when it comes to making their final purchase decision,” says Mr Caldwell. Joe Lano of Lano says his company's Easy Care collection has grown to form a major share of its UK portfolio and shows that modern homeowners now treat stain-resistant carpets on the same par as wool-rich styles. Thanks to the evolution of the look and feel of polypropylene, stain-resistant carpets have improved drastically over the last few years and premium offerings now provide a wear warranty equivalent to that of many wool-rich carpets," he says. “Developments such as our lanoset yarn have done much to boost the wear properties of stain-resistant carpets, alleviating many fears that the carpet will soon look worn and they are now a serious contender and genuine alternative to wool carpets. And if proof were needed, some of our most popular collections are part of our Easy Care collection. Names like Startwist and Fairfield will be familiar to many retailers and they are proven sellers,” Mr Lano concludes.

FlooringNews

by Dennis Flower

Lano’s Startwist Supreme 260 is a firm favourite with retailers

Vince Holden, Whitestone Weavers Group UK sales director, says: "Although we take pride in our hard earned reputation as a high quality woolhouse, we could not ignore the growing trend towards the polypropylene stain-resist products. Consumers seek convenience and in areas where spillages are more likely, such as playrooms or dining areas, it stands to reason that a Hassle Free flooring option appeals.” “While buyers recognise the superiority of high wool content carpet, practicality sometimes wins,” he continues. “Recognising this, we're set to expand our Hassle Free range in the autumn with two Saxony lines made from our new Softlux yarn - a plain Saxony and our Hassle Free Luxury. Both come in three weights and 12 modern shades. Hassle Free Luxury Heathers will follow shortly afterwards and a top of the range twistpile later in the year; while the continuing growth in stripes will be served by Hassle Free Luxury Stripe. “Supporting retailers in taking products to market that suit certain lifestyle choices, we'll be introducing a dedicated Hassle Free Tombola in the next quarter. As well as showcasing the range it will help bring to life our Hassle Free proposition, promoting messages surrounding our 'no quibble' stain warranties," says Mr Holden.

Saxony and stain resistance is an irrestible combination for consumers such as Whitestone’s popular Parsons Stone

Abingdon Carpets says some people may not be aware that it was at the forefront of introducing bleach-cleanable polypropylene carpet to the UK. The company's Robin Viney saw the concept in the USA and brought its Stainfree Zylon polypropylene to the UK. “The rest, as they say, is history,” the company states, with ‘Stainfree’ now being to polypropylene what Hoover is to the vacuum cleaner. Abingdon says it believes that stain-resistant carpet will continue to grow in strength, due to the fast pace of life requiring products to retain their appeal and be easy to maintain.

from The Stocklists

Abingdon customers enjoy a ‘Stainfree for Life’ guarantee

“The other important factor is to remember that the latest generation of 2 ply yarns and the wide variation of products on offer ensure that the products stand the test of time. Exactly why we give our products our unique ‘Stainfree for Life’ guarantee," the company concludes. Phil Hartley, Edel Telenzo Carpets UK chief executive, reminds readers of the ease of cleanability and maintenance of wool and woolrich products. Characteristics inherent in wool means these products will perform in every regard with appropriate attention and on-going maintenance. “We know the market for stain free polypropylene ranges is growing, but for us the jury is out as to the longevity of this. Yes, polypropylene fibres are now engineered to a far higher specification and there are unquestionably some good PP carpets ranges out there right now, but will the medium term appearance retention issue raise its head again? There is some evidence of this from retailers, but only time will tell," he says. His company believes wool-rich carpet will find increasing favour in the future and Mr Hartley states that Edel Telenzo's use of the Scotchgard treatment reflects that this is the best option to provide consumers with reassurance of protection and environmental safety. Kingsmead's Martin West says: “We have achieved significant success with two stain resistant fibres. Wolltec is a revolutionary fibre with all the stain resistance of a man made fibre but the appearance of wool, whilst our Everlon fibre, marketed as Clean Easy, is a more straightforward Bcf polypropylene.” Stain-resistance is particularly appealing to the younger generations, he continues. “The consumer seems to gain confidence from guarantees in both wearability and stain resistance which is why we have further developed our offer to include leaflets to give away at point of sale and online registration of our guarantees. The challenge to the retailer is to get across the message that whilst these fibres do not permanently stain, this does not mean they don't get dirty. Cleaning the carpet will still prolong its longevity," says Mr West.
