Carpet&FlooringReview Bring out the best

Through Made in Heaven, Leonis and StainSafe, Balta Carpets has built a formidable collection of brands that present homeowners with beautiful carpets made to meet their expectations on liveability and value-for-money.

Europe’s largest carpet manufacturer, Balta has complete vertical integration allowing it to control every aspect of manufacture, from yarn spinning through to backing, and helping it to make carpets that deliver an unbeatable combination of quality and value. Along with the scale to hold stock at levels that outstrip rivals, Balta can also deliver exceptional service on both rolls and cut-lengths. With StainSafe an enduring presence in many retail stores, homeowners have come to learn that carpets bearing the familiar blue and red logo are ones to rely on, famed for great resistance to common household stains. As more fibres become engineered to deliver StainSafe-like performance, Balta Carpets has raised the benchmark again, expanding the number of ranges made from durable StainSafe X-Tron polypropylene yarn. Offering near-faultless performance, the fibre is used in Balta’s most enduring qualities, including the classic StainSafe Heritage Heathers Luxury and StainSafe Heritage Heathers Elite, as well as Hampton Bays and Grand National. The newest brand for the manufacturer, Made in Heaven, marks entry into the polyester market segment with qualities that deliver impressive softness and lasting stain-resistance. Using the latest eco-friendly polyester fibres with bleach cleanable properties, Made in Heaven is designed to withstand use in modern family homes. Standing out in store thanks to its unique point-of-sale, Made in Heaven is already becoming a favourite for retailers. Have it all floors

Simple to fit, water-resistant and easy to look after, cushion vinyl flooring has been a popular choice in bathrooms and kitchens across the land for decades.Yet as Leoline floors prove, there’s plenty more performance to make cushion vinyl flooring a sound choice right throughout the home.

Wood and stone-effect flooring is now commonplace and is often fitted throughout entire floors, bringing a surface that’s not only beautiful, but practical and hardwearing too. However, whether the real thing or synthetic, these floors have one drawback; a hard feeling underfoot. Leoline overcomes this issue with a floor that looks just like wood or stone, but that feels warm and comfortable to the touch. Thanks to a cushion backing that brings great long-term comfort, Leoline floors excel in living spaces, hallways, studies and bedrooms. Selected Leoline floors featuring a specially-developed acoustic backing, so they can also make homes quieter as well as warmer and comfier. “With homeowners wanting natural looks along with ease and practicality, synthetic floors are now a popular choice, even in homes where carpet used to be the only floor to have,” says Maaike Dickx, product manager, Leoline. “However, no one would ever say these floors are particularly comfortable and homeowners will often make them feel comfier with a rug. With Leoline this needn’t be the case – the compact foam backings help to deliver carpet-like comfort and they never feel hard or cold to the touch.” Leoline floors also lose nothing in liveability, remaining incredibly easy to look after. In fact, with no joints or weak spots, cushion vinyl floors give exceptional water-resistance and cleanability, helped by the scuff and spill resistance of Superguard. With multiple widths, these great features can be shared no matter how big the room. In an extraordinary variety of natural and architectural looks – from classic grey oak through to concrete, pebbles, slate and walnut – the Leoline collection is ready to instantly transform any room. NEWS Winning streaks

Streaks is a wonder of texture, distressed areas and intricate stitching inspired by the sandy shores and winter gales of the New Jersey shoreline.

The latest design in the Atlantic series from the machine-woven rug maestros, Louis de Poortere, Streaks has a worn vintage look that gives the quality of abstract art and a rug that looks great in any setting. Jacquard woven and hand-finished in Belgium from cotton chenille and high gloss polyester yarns in five seductive colourways including highimpact Montauk Multi and tonal Coney Grey, Streaks brings a fresh and modern feel to the home, echoing the original ethos of the collection. Alan Russell, sales director UK, Louis de Poortere: “Despite the use of worn and vintage effects used to give the quality its unique multilayered texture, Streaks feels very modern, it’s abstract design fitting alongside Surf ’s more high-style look. Streaks is a design that is certainly more versatile, but no less beautiful, and one that’s sure to appeal to homeowners on the look-out for a rug that shows a sophisticated, mature approach to interior style.” Available from stock in seven sizes from 60 x 90cm up to 280 x 360cm, Streaks features a natural latex anti-slip backing and comes in an 85/15 cotton/polyester blend. Soft serenade

In a luxurious 60oz saxony quality, Serenade is the latest style to join the popular Touchdown collection of supersoft, stain-resistant carpets. Featuring some of Lano’s most familiar names, including Fascination and Imagination, the Touchdown collection is home to carpets made with Eccelena yarn. Engineered to bring exquisite softness without sacrificing stain-resistance, Eccelena ensures that Serenade feels as indulgent and comfortable as it looks. In fact, with colour part of the fibre itself, all Eccelena styles are not only stain-resistant, but fade-resistant too and keep their colour even under strong sunlight. Available in a palette of 16 modern colours, this latest addition to the Touchdown collection adds more depth and responds to the latest home trend for luxurious finishes. Gary Alp, national sales manager, explains: “We’re seeing a strong trend for luxurious finishes in interior design with lush fabrics and rich textures, so it’s only natural that carpet is reflecting this by becoming more indulgent. With a deep 13mm pile and dense structure, Serenade gives a really opulent look that’s great for homeowners wanting something really special, but that also stands up well to family life.” With gorgeous hues of duck egg blue, rose and lavender, along with a full suite of greys and neutrals, Serenade also welcomes colour back to carpet and embraces the more sophisticated approach many homeowners are taking with interiors. In four and five-metre widths, the style is also ready to reduce seams in large rooms. As part of the Touchdown collection, the 1/8th gauge Serenade enjoys a 10-year stain-resistant warranty and is best suited to use in bedrooms and living spaces. . T 00800 5266 5266 www.lano.com

Original... and better!

Launched in 1990 as the first stain-resistant polypropylene collection for UK homes, StainFree Twist took the market by storm. This September, Abingdon Flooring is raising the benchmark again. Launching at The Flooring Show, the fourth-generation StainFree Twist and StainFree Ultra bring a softer feel and a fitter-friendly fleece backing to the original easy-clean carpet.

Now made with a fine 1/10th gauge yarn, the new StainFree Twist and StainFree Ultra feel much softer to the touch, while still benefitting from the StainFree for Life promise against all food and drink spillages, and a long 10-year wear warranty. And with the addition a fleece-backing that doesn’t scuff skirting boards and makes the carpet easier to handle, both styles are certainly better than ever before. Featuring in a new colour bank of 20 modern colours, including a full complement of grey tones in every of-the-moment shade, and with a more competitive price-point, StainFree Twist and StainFree Ultra are all set for today’s value-conscious homeowner. Abingdon Flooring is bringing four widths to both styles in 2, 2.5, 4 and 5m options. Martin Peace, sales director, Abingdon Flooring: “There is no doubt that these styles are true classics, but that’s not to say we should ever stop improving them and the fourthgeneration products are testament to why. With a finer feel, fitter-friendly and better value than ever before, we’re looking forward to StainFree Twist and StainFree Ultra reaffirming their position as part of the UK’s most popular stain-resistant carpet collection.” T 01274 655 694 26 September 2018

NEWS Welcome addition

Proven in care homes, social housing and education locations across the country, the Scala Solutions range of impervious-backed carpet from Lano is famed for its home-like style and commercial-level performance.

Perfect for when creating a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere but must not compromise on performance, Scala Twist is the latest addition to the range. Offering a classic 1/8th gauge twist pile in a 1,200g/m2 weight, Scala Twist features a two-ply Essenz solution dyed yarn, so will not fade, even under intensive cleaning. The carpet’s impervious foam back makes it suitable in areas where spills and accidents are commonplace, preventing odour build-up thanks to its ability to be cleaned with a diluted bleach solution. With workman blues and charcoals for commercial and education environments, along with neutral colours to give a home-like feel in care and housing, Scala Twist is available in 20 colours. Gary Alp, UK sales manager: “Scala Solutions is a formidable choice for a broad range of commercial environments, offering practical advantages in office spaces as well as care homes and school classrooms.“ Joining Scala Plain and Scala Classic, this new style strengthens the argument for Scala Solutions as the ‘go-to’ broadloom carpet when performance, comfort and style need to go hand-in-hand. Incredibly versatile, the new Scala Twist is Class 31 wear rated and comes in a practical four-metre width. T 00800 5266 5266 www.lano.com

Healthy happy floors

For floors specified in healthcare environments, an ability to be easy to clean and hygienic ranks as important as a capacity to endure and the provision of a comfortable environment for patients, staff and visitors. With vinyl flooring from Itec Contract Floors, specifiers can ensure that the floor for their next healthcare project delivers on all of these requirements.

Featuring Hyperguard+, all sheet vinyl flooring from Itec Contract Floors is certainly easy to clean. Resisting scuffs and dirt, the PUR treatment ensures that no specialist maintenance is needed for the lifetime of the floor and that normal cleaning leaves a surface that looks visibly cleaner. Selected collections, such as Optimise 70, are also equipped with Sanitec to improve resistance to bacteria. All floors from Itec have been proven to inhibit bacteria growth, but the addition of Sanitec provides an active measure to make sure that bacteria are stopped in their tracks. An integral part of the wear layer, Sanitec provides permanent hygienic protection and an extra layer of security for hygiene sensitive locations. Suitability for healthcare environments can be boosted yet further with the use of Inivisweld, a proprietary installation method that relies on a chemical weld for a floor with less places for dirt to hide. Invisiweld eliminates the weak and dirt-harbouring joins produced through conventional hotwelding, contributing to a floor that is not only hygienic, but one that retains the aesthetic integrity of wood, tile or architectural designs. Formula for strength

F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has launched a reformulated version of its market-leading, rapid-curing, flexible adhesive, Stycco Flex, which is now also recommended for installing PVC flooring accessories, including skirting, capping and coving.

The highly versatile, hybrid tube adhesive is well known for its ability to bond almost any absorbent or non-absorbent material found in the flooring and construction industries. The high strength build-up and fast curing time means it can secure stair nosings and trims, without the need for mechanical fixings, in as little as 60 minutes. It can also be used to bond two impervious surfaces together. The new formulation has enhanced dimensional stability and excellent plasticiser resistance – enabling 100% compatibility with PVC accessories. The high strength gain and strong bond performance of Stycco Flex restricts the movement of PVC accessories that occurs over the lifetime of an installation and with temperature change. This gives the advantage of eradicating gapping at joints – a benefit in clinical or biologically sensitive environments, ensuring there is no breeding ground for bacteria. Its solvent-free and hazard-free properties mean it is now an excellent alternative to traditional contact adhesives in such environments. The excellent gap-filling qualities of Stycco Flex also make it ideal for installing vertical flooring accessories on rough surfaces. It can be sanded down and subsequently painted with most water-based paints. It is also water resistant, so can tolerate wet cleaning without any detriment to the bond performance. New Stycco Flex also has improved application properties too, making it easier to gun out, and better nip-off qualities, meaning no mess and less waste. The ability to apply to vertical substrates has been improved to ensure there is no slipping or sliding when using it to bond accessories in these types of situations. In addition to its new formulation, Stycco Flex tubes have also been redesigned with a fresh new look, in visually striking yellow tubes, which are now available from your local F. Ball distributor in 290ml cartridges. T 01538 361633 www.f-ball.co.uk 28 September 2018

Metro Enhanced independence

Carpet Recycling UK will be showcasing ten years of resource recovery from waste carpet and the focus will be on supporting the flooring sector to increase recycling and reuse of these materials, thereby helping to reduce disposal costs.

The Metro Group has been serving independent retailers for almost 40 years from the smallest one-man operation to multiple-outlet businesses.

In its 10th anniversary year, the industry-backed association for recycling and reusing waste carpet reports consistently higher numbers of enquiries from flooring companies that are keen to improve their efforts to divert carpet from landfill and to offer recycling services to their customers. Retailers and contractors can join as new members at the show with advice and details available from CRUK’s team.

Retaining independence is vital to Metro members but being able to own brand products instore is becoming vital for independent retailers and by using Metro’s Marketing Service, members can use either the Group’s own label, Carpet 1st, or take advantage of the bespoke marketing service which allows them the ability to rebrand their own stores completely or selectively. This can be done as extensively as the retailer chooses to, on-site if necessary.

HarrogateGuide Karndean Designflooring announces new designs as part of Art Select wood collection.

Karndean Designflooring is extending its sophisticated Art Select wood collection with 14 new contemporary designs, including shades of French oak, hickory and American chestnut.

Full of charm and character, Karndean’s Art Select wood collection is recognised for featuring the most beautiful and authentic timber effects, with intricate and realistic handcrafted embosses.

An iconic choice for stylish interiors, Karndean’s oak flooring designs are popular choices, thanks to the versatile range of colour and plank options on offer. Four new French oak designs - Mountain Oak, Glacier Oak, Savannah Oak and Prairie Oak – are now extending the range of hues available, including gentle beige, cool grey and warm honey tones, which will blend seamlessly into décor styles from traditional country to modern industrial.

Ideal for home designers looking to add visual interest in open plan spaces, or to match flooring ‘room to room’, the new oak designs are available in a choice of extra-large plank (56” x 9”) and parquet format (18 x 3”) which can be used in different laying patterns, such as herringbone or laying at 45 degrees, to define separate living areas and create a sense of flow.

While visiting historic barns and factories in the rural heart of North America, Karndean’s designers fell in love with the rustic feel and rich warm tones of reclaimed chestnut planks.

Karndean welcomes four new hickory designs – Natural Hickory, Weathered Hickory, Vintage Hickory and Classic Hickory – which feature intense colour variation for a unique and elegant look, while a new and exclusive emboss reproduces the subtle crosssawn appearance and texture of the original unfinished planks. Featuring a bold pattern for impressive variation across the floor, home decorators can effortlessly recreate a highly authentic look of traditionally crafted wood planks.

While visiting historic barns and factories in the rural heart of North America, Karndean’s designers fell in love with the rustic feel and rich warm tones of reclaimed chestnut planks. Faithfully replicating the unique array of cracks, worm holes and blemishes of aged interior timbers and exterior cladding, the new Reclaimed Chestnut design has a matte finish for an eclectic, rustic appearance. Million Tonne Milestone

Carpet Recycling UK has inspired and facilitated the diversion from landfill of one million tonnes of waste carpet in its first decade, delegates at the industry association’s tenth Annual Conference and Awards Event heard. This total tonnage is equivalent to approximately 400 million m2 of carpet or 57,000 football pitches. Key markets that have developed include carpet tile reuse, the equestrian sector, recovered fuels and incineration for energy recovery. Last year, 168,000 tonnes were diverted from landfill, representing a diversion rate of 42%. CRUK’s target is 60% by 2020. CRUK Director Laurance Bird said the event was a ‘great success’ with ‘excellent feedback’ from attendees on the contacts made, networking opportunities and wide range of subjects covered. He commented: “One million tonnes of carpeted diverted from landfill to reuse, recycling and energy recovery is a fantastic demonstration of what can be achieved by cooperation across the value chain. Thank you to our core funders who had the foresight to make this possible.” T 0161 440 8325

www.carpetrecyclinguk.com

David Judge, Cormar Carpets; Jack White, Floorstore Group on behalf of winner Steve Walker; Stuart Thomas, Designer Contracts; Kate Burnett, Milliken; Ellen Petts, Greenstream Flooring; Tony Spreckley, Envirocycle London; Sue Jaques, Melrose Textile Co and Andy Murphy, Melrose Textile Co.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, David Judge MD of Cormar Carpets said: “Ten years ago, we realised that Laurance Bird and his team would be useful to our company. Over that decade, we have saved around £3 million by not making waste through innovation in the production process and not sending any manufacturing waste to landfill – it’s all recycled! “If we can do it, you can do it, truly! We’re engineering waste out of our business – and expect to save around £500,000 a year going forward. That’s about £5 million over the next 10 years,” said David, who presented the winning individuals and organisations with their trophies and certificates at the July ceremony, held at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham. Cormar Carpets is one of CRUK’s core funders, alongside Lifestyle Floors/Headlam Group, Brintons Carpets, DESSO, ege, Milliken, and Balsan. CRUK’s annual awards event marks the achievements of members who have demonstrated innovation, commitment and best practice in the sector. It was a double celebration for Emerald Trading Waste Solutions whose commitment to developing new systems and processes to recycle carpet waste in the equestrian sector won the company two awards – Recycler of the Year and the 2018 Outstanding Achievement accolade. The company recycles post-consumer carpets into their Carpet Gallop all-weather equestrian surface.

NEWS Born again floors

A variety of vinyl flooring products from UK manufacturer Polyflor were selected for installation at North Middlesex Hospital’s new £17.9 million maternity unit.

A selection of Polyflor safety, homogeneous and SD floor coverings, including Forest fx, XL PU, Polysafe Standard, Polysafe Hydro Evolve and Finesse SD, were used throughout the unit by Leeds-based flooring contractors Phoenix Flooring. This modular building project was completed off site by Portakabin Group, with main contractor Kier Construction, as part of a larger £80 million modernisation and expansion programme at the hospital. The new unit includes eight home-from-birth rooms, an 18-cot neonatal unit with three mother and baby rooms and extra capacity if necessary. A labour ward includes a delivery suite and two obstetrics operating theatres. Forest fx PUR sheet vinyl flooring in American Oak has been extensively used throughout the wards, corridors and reception areas. The Forest fx range is available in a practical and resilient 2.0mm gauge vinyl sheet format with a 0.7mm wear layer, making it ideal for high traffic, heavy commercial environments in the healthcare sector. The product’s cross-linked and UV cured polyurethane reinforcement (PUR) offers a low cost, polish-free maintenance regime for the lifetime of the flooring. T 0161 767 1111

Child's play for Altro

Altro Orchestra smooth flooring has been used to create two childfriendly woodland-themed reception and play areas as part of a refurbishment in Milton Keynes Hospital Paediatric Emergency Department. Altro Suprema safety flooring was also fitted in the new unit’s observation areas, treatment bays, examination rooms, and toilets. AD Architects designed the new unit and chose Altro Orchestra to create two colourful, reception play areas. Interior Architect Ashley Hughes, says: “Altro Orchestra was the ideal choice for flooring because it has excellent colour and texture choices, which enabled us to be creative and flexible with the design. The product is also perfect for an Emergency Department and paediatrics because at 2.85mm it’s very comfortable to walk and sit on, and it’s designed to reduce noise reverberation, these are both qualities we were looking for. For areas where comfort and sound reduction are important, 2.85mm Altro Orchestra has been engineered to create the ideal environment to learn and live. Low residual indentation means equipment and furniture, including hospital beds, can be moved without leaving marks. At the same time the integrated impact sound insulation system cuts impact sound by up to 15dB. It offers comfort underfoot making life easier on the feet, and with a palette of 40 colours and designs — varying from calming neutrals reflecting tones of nature to vibrant shades — it creates the right atmosphere every time. Jane joins Euro institute

Jane Gardner, Head of Axion’s Consulting Services, will be leaving the Manchester-based resource recovery specialists at the end of August 2018 to take up a new senior pan-European role. One of Axion’s earliest employees, Jane is moving to her next career challenge as Managing Director of the European Resilient Flooring Institute (ERFMI) based in Brussels.

Axion Director Roger Morton said: “We are very sad to see Jane leave Axion; she was one of our earliest employees. She has been the driving force behind the development of the many successful recycling collection schemes that we manage and has led and delivered numerous other novel recycling projects..” Jane joined Axion in 2006 as a Project Co-ordinator, having previously worked as a sub-contractor doing German-English translations and other project related activities. Initially responsible for administration relating to Recovinyl, she secured repeat contracts for managing this successful PVC Recycling scheme. Alongside this, she set up Recofloor, the UK’s vinyl flooring recycling scheme, RecoMed, a UK-wide take-back scheme that recycles PVC used in healthcare and the management of Carpet Recycling UK. All of her schemes have won numerous awards over the years. The industry collection schemes will now be led by Richard McKinlay, Axion’s Head of Circular Economy and supported by the rest of the team. Carpet Recycling UK will continue to be managed overall by Axion, spearheaded by Adnan Zeb-Khan as CRUK Scheme Manager. Adnan, who has over 20 years of experience in the waste sector, will work with Marie Rhodes and the rest of the CRUK team to continue to drive forward the diversion of carpets from landfill. BUSINESS REPORT

Autumn “can’t come soon enough” for sales

Floorcovering and furniture was “forgotten” in July as the sun shone with the three Ws – weather, world cup and Wimbledom – being blamed for a flat performance this summer.

The latest report from the Office for National Statistics shows a steep fall in furniture and floorcovering sales in July, down nearly 10% compared to June from £1.2bn to £1.08bn. Compared to the same period in 2017, sales are completely flat. The ONS also reported that floorcovering prices are falling at present by half a percent year-on-year. “The extended period of summer weather, demand for many seasonal purchases has slowed while the heat has kept shoppers away from days spent browsing new ranges,” said Helen Dickinson of the British Retail Consortium. “For many in the Industry, Autumn could not come sooner.”

16-18 SEPTEMBER 2018 • HARROGATE

The most recent indicator of the sluggish summer was Laura Ashley’s report on August 22 that home furnishing sales were down by 8.2%. “Given the softer consumer confidence at this juncture, some of our customers have deferred the more expensive purchases,” said the company’s statement.

The Headlam Group, the UK’s biggest flooring distributor, reported a continuing decline in the UK of 5.2% as “the softness in the UK market continues to persist” according to their trading update for the six months ending June 30. The Group’s overall revenues were up 1% however for the first half. Headlam has also said it will be raising prices from 2 to 10% from September and cited raw material costs pushing up its supplier prices as a reason for the increase. Kidderminster-based flooring group Victoria Plc have reported strong sales growth of 29% in its UK business as full year results to March 31, 2018, unveiled pre-tax profits of £41m – a 39% increase over last year. The company’s total turnover now exceeds £400m. It also announced another acquisition in the ceramic floor tile portfolio with the purchase of Spanish tile manufacturer Cerámica Saloni for £86m.

The winners of 2018

The industry all-stars! The major new awards scheme to celebrate the ideas, imagination and innovation that drive forward the UK flooring industry. The flooring industry’s newest awards scheme exceeded expectations with more than 100 submissions – all competing to become one of the “stars” of the Flooring Innovation Awards. The National Flooring Innovation Awards 2018 is designed to be different to the usual ranked prizes given out across the industry and instead sets out to identify products and services that are genuinely new and exceptional in the sector. Awards scheme organiser Bridgette Kelly commented: “The first year of the scheme has been a phenomenal success with far more submissions than even we expected and exceptional quality across the board. This industry clearly has an appetite for innovation and that is clearing a strong factor in securing future success.” Judging for the category winners took place in August and now the independent judges will decide on the ten most exceptional “Innovation Gold” titles which will be handed out at the Harrogate show. The judges are leading figures from the industry: Chris Moffat of SMG; Martin West, ex-Kingsmead and now MD of William Armes; Deborah Barker, editorin-chief of Homes & Gardens and 25 Beautiful Homes; wool campaigner Bridgette Kelly and David Spragg, editorial director of The Stocklists magazine.

Flower on Flooring

by Dennis Flower

‘Explosion of choice’ in man-made carpets One of the more notable success stories in recent years has been the growth in popularity of synthetic carpet, which looks set to continue for some time to come.

If further evidence of this is needed, a visit to The Flooring Show in Harrogate this month will provide the necessary proof in the number of new collections, with synthetic carpet displayed in prominent positions on many exhibitors’ stands.

Lano national sales manager Gary Alp says synthetic fibre choice has “exploded over the last three or four years and these fibres now form the mainstay of collections from all leading manufacturers.

Aurora in Balta’s beautiful Made in Heaven collection

“Once seen as a more cost-effective option to wool or wool-blend carpets, synthetic fibres are now considered equal.”

Additional thoughts are provided by Balta marketing director Geert Vanden Bossche: “Our Made in Heaven collection of supersoft PET carpets defines how far synthetic carpets have come over the last three or four years.

The silky Pashmina in Lano’s Halcyon collection

“Once seen as a more cost-effective option to wool or wool-blend carpets, synthetic fibres are now considered equal. Indeed, for many homeowners these man-made fibres offer a more practical approach,” he continues.

“Much of the change in perception of man-made fibres has been driven by the rise of extra-soft polypropylene (PP) and polyester (PET) carpets, such as those found in our Touchdown and Halcyon collections. Combating the coarse feel that has somewhat stifled PP in the past, these new generation fibres are appealing not only for their stain-resistance but also their luxurious feel. “The Pashmina and Pashmina Luxe PET styles in our Halcyon collection take this one stage further, with a gorgeous silk-like look that’s incredibly popular at the moment,” says Mr Alp.

82 September 2018

“First kicked off with softer PP styles, such as those in our Leonis collection, the market has really been embracing a move away from matt yarns towards a glossier look and Made in Heaven is our response,” Mr Vanden Bossche continues.

“With stain resistance and bleach-cleanable for practicality, this ecofriendly polyester collection brings homeowners a really luxurious feel that’s suitable for use in family homes thanks to a resilient two-ply yarn. In super-soft qualities to suit a range of budgets and with a beautiful, ranging palette including charcoal and pastels, Made in Heaven demonstrates just how far synthetic fibres have come,” he concludes.

Associated Weavers says its Invictus brand has been so successful that it has “dramatically” increased from four products launched initially to 12, with more to come.

The appeal is down to its construction from iVinci fibre, invincible in every respect, the company explains. Its polypropylene ranges Sirius and Magnificus have been the most successful to date, whilst this autumn sees the launch of Dorado and Indus in the Aquarius Collection, featuring the new resilient and modern iVerse polyester yarn. continued on page 84...

Victoria Carpets says its most successful synthetic range is First Impressions, made from a soft touch polypropylene with a ‘10’ wear warranty, which continues to be its best performing among its approved retailers.

With the trend continuing, the company says colours still focus on the grey scale, followed by other shades and some subtle colour introductions. This colour trend runs through all the Victoria Carpet synthetic products.

“Even more so as we develop our EasiCare Polyester ranges, after the success of Shimmer and Celestial being launched last year. With polyester allowing us a nice soft feel, yet more durable and hard wearing that many competitors’ PP.

“This will be complemented very soon with a new addition in Arcadia, our first 10th gauge polyester. Thus making sure this is a carpet that can withstand the demands of family life, yet give your home that look and feel of luxury,” the company states.

Associated Weavers’ Gavin Pugh says: “We see functionality and versatility as being the prime areas of future sales. This means further development of neutral tones like greys and beiges, with the addition of up-to-date earthy shades to enhance the appeal of all of our ranges.” The company states it aims to offer as wide a range of colours and styles as possible to continue satisfying retailer and consumer demand through autumn and into 2019.

Cormar Carpet Company marketing director David Cormack says: “We know that synthetic carpets have had a real surge in popularity over the past decade, thanks to their easy clean properties and affordability. “However, there has been an emerging trend in the past couple of years for even softer, deeper, luxurious feeling carpets. Texture is more prevalent than ever before as it adds a different dimension to carpet and is an easy way to bring character into the home.

“While our Sensation portfolio of carpets is still a top seller, we’ve had great success with our Apollo collection which expanded this year with the launch of Apollo Comfort,” says Mr Cormack.

“Responding to the market, it’s a new, softer Excellon polypropylene fibre carpet that brings a premium feel to an affordably priced range. It has a palette of 12 on trend shades, featuring tonal greys – which are still the most fashionable shade – and not just in flooring but homes in general.” 84 September 2018

Flooring factsheet Luxury underfoot

from Interfloor

Duralay underlays for LVT create the perfect installation

Interfloor has developed a specialist collection of Duralay underlays and adhesives designed to make luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) even more comfortable underfoot and to ensure the tiles look good for longer. The new LVT underlays are quick to fit, easy to work with, and help to reduce the need for sub-floor preparation and damage to flooring due to uneven sub-floors. The LVT adhesives are suitable for single stick, double-stick or for directly sticking LVT to the sub-floor. Duralay LVT Multi-Fit Underlay can be fitted loose lay, single stick or double-stick depending upon installation requirements and provides increased underfoot comfort and improved noise reduction. It also provides an excellent sub-floor, masking minor surface imperfections, and helping prevent the overstraining of joints. Duralay Multi-Fit underlay is particularly suited to larger areas and commercial installations. Duralay LVT Low-Grab Underlay is a versatile solution which can be used to install ‘click system’ luxury vinyl tiles. The underlay is loose-laid over the sub-floor or existing flooring significantly reducing sub-floor preparation times and the new flooring is positioned and laid onto the underlay’s unique low grab backing, holding the tiles in position preventing movement during and after installation. Duralay LVT Dry-Back Underlay can be used to install ‘dry back’ luxury vinyl tiles. A release film is peeled back to expose the pre-applied adhesive, the new flooring is then positioned and pressed onto the underlay’s unique high grab backing. The adhesive allows an open time whereby tiles or planks can be lifted and re-positioned.

New high-end edgings for luxury installations Interfloor has introduced new premium edgings offering a top-quality addition to its existing Gripperrods range. The new Premier floor edgings are available in two modern finishes that will complement the current trends in luxury home accessories. The Premier range includes a very on-trend brushed steel nickel or an elegant bright chrome which will co-ordinate well with other home accessories, light switches and door handles to ensure a seamless finish. Both finishes are available in six specialist trims designed to provide the perfect solution for all types of flooring. For further information, please visit www.interfloor.com

Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world. 88

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

www.interfloor.com

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 90

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS September 2018

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. THE STOCKLISTS September 2018

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types Tip Sheared

Level Loop

Multi-Level Loop

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

THE STOCKLISTS September 2018

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 97
