Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED

WOVEN

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.

Level loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours. Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

Regular Maintenance Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur. Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers! Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet. Use only WOOLSAFE approved products WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.

The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.

Periodic Cleaning When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company. If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE approved products. Look for the WOOLSAFE Mark on the bottle or package. It is best to engage the services of a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning company. To get a really expert job done entrust the work to a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. These companies are fully trained, have been in business for a considerable length of time, are members of one or more recognised professional trade associations related to the cleaning industry and have a reputation for top quality service. And they use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents on your wool carpets and rugs!

If you have a problem with a carpet or rug that requires an independent inspector, a network of carpet complaint investigators, trained and registered by The WOOLSAFE Organisation is available throughout the UK and Ireland. WOOLSAFE Registered Inspectors have extensive experience in investigating the causes for carpet complaints based on their practical involvement with carpets and rugs over many years. They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers, retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can carry out or commission tests where required, and will provide comprehensive reports. Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member •

Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see what you would actually use

• Check out the product ranges offered including the www.beautifulflooring.co.uk Contact: Paul Phillips Tel: 01892 549050 paul@atbrm.com

Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Increase sales

• ‘Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support

Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with point-of-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Access professional services

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING

SPROUTING

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLES The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

SHEDDING The original carpet tile

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPS

This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.

10

• shedding • pulled loops

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

SHADING

STATIC Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOL Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

THE STOCKLISTS July 2012

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

PILE REVERSAL

FLATTENING

(SEE SHADING)

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONS When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

SOILING Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or

any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave

sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

THE STOCKLISTS July 2012

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre THE BEST CARPET WOOL Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home. THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years. Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

SAFE

DURABLE

Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer. Safety Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly. Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites. Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

HARD WORKING, GOOD LOOKING This month, we couldn’t resist focusing on one of our newer contract qualities... Gloss is aptly named, as it does have a distinctive, attractive lustre to it and we think it will be a front runner when it comes to stylish office refurbishments, particularly as it has such a good colour palette of exciting, rich shades. Gloss is a level looppile in high quality 1/10th gauge 100% polyamide 6 fibre, with a pile weight of 660 gsm, a pile height of 3.7mm and Actionback backing. Careful colour Colour bleeding in patterned wool-rich carpets after cleaning can be a big problem, causing consumers and end-users dissatisfaction with their carpets and carpet cleaners. Offering an eyecatching look, the striped designs add the perfect colour contrast to the plain styles and are the ideal choice for creating stylish staircases or harmonious adjoining rooms. A tufted 5/32” cut pile crafted from 100% StainSafe polypropylene, Noble Saxony allows retailers to provide consumers with highperformance, trouble-free carpet ideal for busy homes. Classed as suitable for heavy domestic use, StainSafe Noble Saxony can be used freely in areas prone to spillages, as it is bleach-cleanable and offers fantastic levels of colour retention even after rigorous cleaning. Concerned by the fact that many carpet cleaners think it is acceptable to use high pH buffered cleaning agents on natural fibres, as long as it is followed by an acid rinse, WoolSafe have investigated the effectiveness of this procedure by using a range of cleaning chemicals and different after-treatments on a number of 80/20 wool/nylon carpets, some patterned, some plain. WoolSafe’s experiment clearly proved that the buffering capacity of a cleaning chemical is just as important as its pH when used on woollen carpets. An acidifying rinse can only bring the high pH back down to the carpet’s comfort zone (usually between 4.5 and 7pH) if the original chemical is not buffered, as a buffered chemical has greater resistance to acids or alkalis and therefore can retain its pH level. When wool carpets are cleaned with a buffered, high pH solution, the carpet pile retains this high pH level so that even an acidic rinse cannot bring the pH back down to a level at which the dyes are stable. This causes colour bleeding and ultimately results in customer dissatisfaction. The safest cleaning solutions for wool carpets were proven to be WoolSafe approved products, and neutral or low pH WoolSafeapproved chemicals did not change the pH of the wool carpet even when extracted with water only. When more aggressive carpet cleaning is needed for heavier stains and spills, high pH WoolSafe approved chemicals can be used, as these are not buffered and therefore allow the carpet to return to its natural pH level after using the acidic rinse. “The results of our experiment are very telling,” explains Dr Agnes Zsednai, Managing Director, The WoolSafe Organisation. “The theory behind this fact that using buffered, high pH chemicals causes the carpet to retain a highly alkaline state is explained at the WoolSafe training course, but we also wanted to show it working in reality. “The use of WoolSafe approved products is the ideal way to do this, as these products have undergone rigorous testing to ensure only the best results and will allow consumers with colourful or patterned wool carpets to relax. Getting a grip on accessories A large stock of accessories is seen by many flooring retailers as essential to ensure that the client receives a professional service and that their flooring is finished in the most appropriate way. This will also maximise revenue opportunities, of course, by providing valuable add-on sales.

Floorwise have focussed on quality products for the fitter

Flooring accessories are an important part of any retailer’s or contractor’s arsenal and what really matters here is a combination of reliability, quality and value, says Richard Bailey, Floorwise managing director: “The right accessory is more than just the cheapest one, there must be balance between its cost, how it performs during installation and how long it keeps looking good and performing post installation. From how well a gripper holds to how cleanly a knife cuts, accessories can have an impact on the quality of job and in turn, an impact on the satisfaction of the job completed. “At Floorwise we specialise in quality and value, whether through our own products, such as Platinum Gripper and Classic profiles, or in tools and sundries from some of the world’s best suppliers. Given too that fitters use these accessories day in day out, there is often a call for quick replenishment and with Floorwise’s national network of trade counters we are always on hand to help out. With stocks of everything from tacks and tapes to profiles, grippers and a complete range of specialist flooring tools, Floorwise distributors are always happy to help you find the perfect finishing touch for the task at hand.”

QA Craftsman is a well organised range of quality accessories

QA Products states that it has taken a long, hard look at the flooring requirements of the trade. Recognising that there is a bewildering choice of different types of gripper, profiles and other accessories, with many different quality standards and prices, it has launched QA Craftsman as a solution to the problem. This is a comprehensive and highly organised range of flooring accessories that incorporates Plaza Profiles, Knightsbridge Gripper, Knightsbridge Scotia and Knightsbridge Holdfast. Further to this, the company states that its QA Craftsman Division brands deliver such benefits as quality-assured, no comeback products; rapid response delivery (next day anywhere in the UK); and 100% customer satisfaction warranty. Competitive pricing also means healthy profit margins, the company states. A new Premium gripper will be launched in the near future by Dickinson Moore, maintaining its high quality but in a wider 25.4mm width, which follows the success of its stick down product launched earlier this year. This is supplied in bright pink boxes and similar to the company’s standard products but without the main nails.

SHOWTIME IN SOLIHULL

In the second of our reports from Solihull, we focus on colour trends based on watching what’s new from manufacturers at the event plus an interview with leading carpet design expert Joanna Ramsden of Wools of New Zealand.

Catwalk to Carpet Fashion trends in clothing have been influencing home interiors design for some years now and then the trends trickle down to the flooring sector. Now the pace has quickened. “What’s new is the speed at which this transition is happening,” says carpet design guru Joanna Ramsden. “Once the interiors trends ran at least a season behind fashion but now they are more intertwined.” The effect is even seen to be working in reverse for the first time with strong interiors trends influencing the catwalk. Joanna is responsible for the colour palette created by Wools of New Zealand that is recognised as the industry’s agenda-setter for designs for the year ahead. Two key trends are emerging at the moment for 2013 – one pale and understated and the other is strong and vibrant. At the pale end of the spectrum are a resurgence in white shades and light skin tones with washed-out greys, chalky pastels, greige, stone and alabaster coming through. Joanna says: “The emphasis is on cool rather than cold.” There’s more than a whiff of nostalgia about all this – these are comforting, calm colours than play well in a turbulent economic environment. Those consumers who are not relying on ‘calm’ to carry on, the alternative is the growing strength of gloombusting vibrant colours. “A chic 70s style influence is blending rich golden tones with bursts of vibrant orange and contrasting warm browns,” says Joanna. We were surprised how many manufacturers at Solihull singled out tangerine as a strongly performing colour – and this is broadloom we’re talking about, not just rugs!

44 July 2012

This colour is used with clashing tones such as reds, pinks, dark greys and inky colours. Yellow is also a new fashion colour in the flooring sector, working well with different greys and with mauves and violets for a really contemporary look. Plain carpet is also selling more strongly across a wide range of greens, from muted leafy tones through to emerald and used in combination. “At a time when anything goes in interior styling, the consumer is being encouraged to add style and individuality to their home,” says Joanna. “Our 2013 palette inspires unexpected combinations and a frivolous play on colour for those who want to create their own unique trend.”

“Once the interiors trends ran at least a season behind fashion but now they are more intertwined.”

Whitestone Weavers Whitestone Weavers are making their first foray into polypropylene as the importance of this grows alongside the increases in the price of wool. Active Abingdon Abingdon Flooring has a reputation for active innovation and 2012 is a busy year for the business as it seeks to increase its market share across a number of flooring sectors with intelligent product development. The Solihull event was a showcase of new ideas which demonstrates the breadth of Abingdon’s portfolio from entry-level synthetics to posh polypropylenes and top quality wools. A significant launch was the new Stainfree Boutique, a clever co-ordinated range which offers flexibility across five stripes colour-matched to five strong coloured plains - plus five more plains in pastel shades that will complement all five stripes. The options for smart combinations is huge. This versatility is enhanced with a choice of widths from 1, 2, 3 and 4m cuts – and with repeat of only 14”, this means that wastage is minimised. Triple Crown was another popular new addition to the polypropylene collection with a 3-ply Stainfree yarn available in 11 textured colourways - this product has taken off with immediate success.

Abingdon Flooring lined up their best-sellers at Solihull to give retailers the widest range of options.

At the top end of this sector, Abingdon has introduced a natural effect PP called Wooltouch which has a shorter, denser pile in a de-lustred yarn that gives a beautiful finish – and it’s made in Britain. The natural theme is enhanced with 8 berber colourways and heather effects – all that’s missing are the sheep. Instead, Wooltouch comes with Abingdon’s lifetime stainfree guarantee and it is available in 4 and 5 metre widths. For those that like the ‘real thing’, they are not neglected by any means as the new Welsh Collection launched under the Wilton Royal brand is made in British Wool in some style. Triple-sheared, the pile has a fine finish and you can take your pick from 30, 40 and 50 oz weights. T 01274 655662 www.abingdonflooring.co.uk

Mohawk Visitors were able to view first hand the comprehensive range of carpets in the Mohawk collection, and were even treated to the sight of an almost life-size blow-up replica of Ricko the Rhino from the now infamous SmartStrand Challenge. Retailers were able to view the wide assortment of carpets from Mohawk, including the American Legacy collection containing the latest super-soft incarnation of the eco-friendly EverStrand carpet fibre, EverStrand XtraSoft, with its eyecatching POS material that shows the transformation of plastic bottles into the high-performance fibre. Also on show were carpets containing Mohawk’s cornbased SmartStrand fibre, the extremely resilient carpet ingredient brand synonymous with the unique blend of tough durability and beautiful softness that can even stand up to the dirt of a rhino for two weeks. “The Buying Groups National Flooring Show was a great success this year,” enthuses Howard Lindsay, Vice President UK Ireland and South Africa. “It was a fantastic chance to display all of our ranges in one central place, and we were really able to spend time with current and potential retailers to explain the philosophy behind our different products. It was a great way to showcase our exciting POS displays and allowed us to demonstrate that we support our retailers by providing them with these excellent selling tools.” T 01480 479830 www.themohawkgroup.com

Cormar Cormar triumphed once again in Solihull as the Supplier of the Year for the Flooring One buying group and as well as an unerring commitment to service, the company’s product development also takes some beating. Two launches at the show - Heather Classics and Living Naturals attracted a lot of attention – but pride of place on the stand was given to the preview of Sensation, a flagship polypropylene with an engineered 60oz pile for the softest feel and 2-fold yarn which does not shed. “Polypropylene has moved out of the ‘cheap and cheerful’ sector,” says Cormar’s David Cormack. ‘Tug’ chugs away... After 22 long and successful years at Axminster Carpets, Stewart “Tugboat” Martin has announced his retirement. Before joining Axminster Carpets, Stewart enjoyed a varied and interesting start to his working life. Straight after school, he posed as a genteel hairdresser for two years before his manly side took control. Enrolling as a welding apprentice, Stewart flexed his muscles and made sparks fly for 12 glorious years before finally making his move into the relative normality of the carpet industry. And the rest, as they say, is history.

L to R: Ian McDermid, Stewart Martin and Marc Helliwell

Able to adapt his obvious persuasive way with words to make an impact within the carpet sector, Stewart first managed a furniture and carpet shop in Warwick. From there, Stewart joined Sanderson Carpets as sales representative for West Midlands and mid-North Wales for six years. In 1990, Axminster’s Robin Oakes offered Stewart the position of sales representative for East Midlands and Lincolnshire, which he duly accepted. After four years, Stewart became field sales manager and was then promoted through the ranks to Group Accounts Manager. Not only dedicated to his job, Stewart was also committed to charity. Livening up the events of Harrogate some years ago, Stewart shaved off his infamous ‘tache and raised £2,700, making for a very memorable flooring show. He’s known by many in the trade as "Tug", a nickname picked up early in his career thanks to his legendary ability to pull anything that moved (apparently!) Following Stewart’s departure, Marc Helliwell and Ian McDermid will combine this role with regional and key account responsibilities. Marc will be responsible for the SMG and BRM buying groups, John Lewis, Carpetright and Home Flooring Solutions, while Ian will also look after ACG, Metro, AIS, Greendale, Allied Carpets, General George and Anglia Home Furnishings. Top 10 carpet stains named and shamed! Irn Bru has topped a new table of the most troublesome carpet stains ahead of curry, red wine and blackcurrant – with some cleaning firms using it as a benchmark to test new recruits. Stanley Friend of Leicester-based ServiceMaster Clean – who has carried out these tests for the past 19 years blames the orange colouring and secret recipe of Irn Bru for the drink’s unyielding stain qualities - the drink includes 32 flavours and colourings! Stanley said: ‘It’s the colourants that make it so difficult to remove. It just goes straight into the carpet and you can’t get it budged, but we’ll probably never know for sure because of the secret recipe. You just wonder what it does to your insides.’ The drink is also popular with homeowners wanting to defraud insurance companies. The Top 10 toughest stains to remove from carpets: 1. Irn Bru; 2. United we fall

Balta boss leaves

United Carpets revealed that it has terminated some of its franchises due to “extremely challenging” trading conditions and decided to review the viability of a number of stores.

Balta Group has announced that Jules Noten will be leaving his position as CEO on July 31st 2012 to pursue other career opportunities. Until a permanent replacement is found, the Board has asked Carl Verstraelen to assume the acting CEO role alongside his current CFO role.

The news pushed the carpet retailer’s shares down 40 percent. Despite financial support from United Carpets, a “significant proportion” of the group’s franchise network has been struggling to meet their liabilities to creditors and the group.

Balta Group has increased its turnover from €530m in 2008 to €750m in 2011 through growth in its existing business and the acquisition of Domo floorcovering. In all of its flooring activities from carpet tiles, laminate, rugs to broadloom carpet it has a leading position in Europe. Balta is the second largest firm worldwide in machine-woven area rugs.

As a result, United Carpets has had to shut down underperforming stores, which it said should have a negative impact on its performance. United Carpets has also decided to review a number of stores to see if they can remain viable under the current franchise model.

Julian Huxtable, Senior Principal at Doughty Hanson, owner of Balta Group, said today: “The Board would like to thank Jules for his contribution to the success of Balta Group over the years and we wish him luck in his future endeavours.”

The group added that it will gauge the impact of the review on its results for the year to end March. “Whilst such impact could be material, the board anticipates that... the continuing core of locations will be able to operate successfully on an ongoing basis,” said United Carpets.

56 July 2012

Mr. Jules Noten commented: “I leave behind a strong team with a clear agenda and a company with a positive culture. I have very much enjoyed my time at Balta and I wish them the very best in the future.” T +32 566 22316

The British Wool column Jubilee celebrations

Best of British – Brinton’s celebrates design The Jubilee has been about celebrating all the great things in the country and good design and great British Wool product is part of that. As a Royal Warrant holder Brintons is proud of its long and established British heritage. Brintons is home to what is probably the world’s largest textile archive which includes original design papers from the company of William Morris (Morris & Co), original hand painted designs from Voysey and Lewis F Day and work from Robin Day. Brintons continues to work with great British design institutions to this present day. The Laura Ashley collection by Brintons is a fabulous example of timeless designs from one of Britain’s most loved furnishing companies.

Blackfriars Bridge on Jubilee Day It was a cold, breezy and very wet day but members of the carpet industry still showed up to support the Campaign for Wool’s celebrations for the Queen’s Jubilee. The Campaign – as a registered charity - had been invited by HRH The Prince of Wales (Campaign for Wool Patron) to take part in the special event. The location on Blackfriars Bridge gave an enviable view of the boats that made up the largest Flotilla in her reign but the weather did not allow the jolly street style atmosphere that had been optimistically anticipated. Nevertheless the invited guests which covered all wool industry sectors and drew from a number of Commonwealth countries, seemed to rise to the challenge of standing in the wind and rain for four hours!! “We had a wonderful day – weather was truly British - and that of course did not put off any of our guests,” said John Thorley, Chairman of the Campaign for Wool. “It was great to see the carpet industry chatting on the Bridge wrapped up for winter and waiting for the Queen’s Barge to come along. Everybody seemed to enjoy the day and the highly privileged position, which came as a result of a suggestion that, “The fabulous wool campaign should be there,”made by our Patron, HRH The Prince of Wales.”

But as Kelly Butler, Creative Design Manager at Brintons explains: “Inspiration doesn’t always come from classic interiors, sometimes you need to step out and take inspiration from our beautiful outdoors. We were given privileged access to The Royal Horticultural Society ‘Lindley Library’ and its wealth of botanical drawings. The result is six enchanting broadloom carpet designs. And this Fine Worcester Twist – a quality spring, we added to our classic from Adam Carpets in Axminster patterns with British Wool. the latest creation from Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, a beautiful large scale filigree design which captures the essence of old school glamour and also oozes contemporary style with on-trend colour treatments using tones of inky black with subtle shades of greys and opal whites.” Further information is available at www.brintons.net

HAPPY 21ST BIRTHDAY ‘FINE WORCESTER TWIST’ Adam Carpets are proud to be celebrating the 21st Birthday of their iconic Fine Worcester Twist range. It is fair to say that even we never imagined just how successful it would become.

71% didn’t decorate their store for the jubilee

Britishness sells, but not during the Jubilee!

65% say consumers prefer to buy British

As the rest of the country turned red, white and blue, 71% of our retail respondents said they had not decorated their store for the jubilee and only a third felt that the celebrations created a feel-good factor to counter the prevailing economic gloom. Our survey showed a 2-to-1 majority against the extra bank holiday. “The long Bank Holiday was obviously a great boost to sales of barbecues and beers, but I think we missed the last shopping weekend before the summer holidays,” said a North East retailer. “Too much hype about the jubilee and the Olympic torch has been bad for business,” said a Welsh store manager and a South East business predicted: “The Olympics will be a disaster for the trade in London.” 65% of retailers felt the Olympics would impact sales adversely. An Essex retailer said: “Maybe we should leave the flag in the cupboard gathering dust. For thinking adults it's all starting to get a little embarassing, don't you think?” But not all the trade is so negative. “Just seeing the support for the Royal Family on TV tells me it can only be a good thing to support British made products,” said a store in Cambridge and 76% of our respondents said they preferred to buy British for their business. 65% of our retail panel said consumers prefer to buy British but 88% said consumers hardly ever ask if a product is made in the UK. “If we keep selling British, it has to help,” said a Scottish retailer. “On our furniture sales, people do ask if it is made in the UK and they want to buy things made here. Lets get back to being the best.”

81% says ‘Made in Britain’ branding helps 59% reckons business is better than last year 65% expect the Olympics to hit sales The Stocklists polled 1038 retailers throughout the UK during June 2012 . Replies and comments are recorded anonymously. Many thanks to all those who took part.

But consumers won’t but British at any price. “Customers do want to buy British, but do we have anything to sell them at the budget end of the market? It's great to sell British carpets, but what retails under £20 a metre?” said a North East store. Despite the complaints from some quarters, business does not appear to be too bad this year so far with 41% of our retailers reporting better trading in the first half than last year with another 18% saying it was much better. Only 23% said it was worse. And there is confidence in the second half of the year with 41% of retailers expecting to do better than last year and 47% about the same.

The trend to brand products as ‘Made in Britain’ was welcomed by 81% of our respondents.

Guests mingled with the knowledgeable Quick-Step Academy staff before being shown to the facility’s impressive meeting room, where parent company Unilin’s Patrick Bourgignon, Conor McKernan and Michelle Magill along with Darren Robinson, the academy’s Training & Development Manager, gave informative and in-depth presentations that explained the ideology behind the academy. After lunch, visitors were given a full tour of the 6,880ft2 training academy, taking in the impressive high-tech facilities on offer to course participants. Viewing the dedicated 12m2 training bays where attendees are able to hone their floor preparation, installation and finishing skills, guests were also shown the wide array of tools and accessories supplied by academy partner DEWALT that help trainees with the fitting processes. “The opening was a huge success, and it was great to welcome so many guests to the Quick-Step Academy,” enthuses Conor McKernan, Product Manger, Unilin. “We have invested heavily in this academy and really believe we can help floor fitters from the across the country improve their installation skills with the ultimate goal of becoming a Quick-Step Master Installer. The opening provided us with the opportunity to share our aims with some of the most influential people in the flooring industry, and it was a great honour that the Ceremonial Mayor of Salford was able to officially cut the ribbon and give us his stamp of approval.” In the first year, the academy aims to welcome 300 floor fitters from across the UK through its doors. Offering a wide range of courses, including a basic foundation course suitable for beginner flooring installers, the Master Installer course for highly experienced individuals, a wood sanding and finishing course and an Apprenticeship program. With an emphasis on lively discussion, practical installations and one-to-one mentoring, the academy offers comprehensive and enjoyable learning activities. Supported by the UK Government’s TrustMark initiative that recommends local independent tradesmen and businesses and whose website receives over 300,000 consumer hits a month, the courses can also help installers to gain an official floorcoverings NVQ qualification, further enhancing their skills. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk.

Mirror, mirror on the floor Coordinated interiors are big news right now and flooring retailers across the country can get in on the act thanks to the stunning Max Reflections profile range from Floorwise. Giving a completely coordinated look and delivering excellent value, the Reflections range includes mirror-like Chrome, Brass, Black Nickel and Brushed Steel Nickel finishes to perfectly match light switches, electrical sockets, door handles and light fittings throughout the home. Brand new and exclusive to Floorwise distributors, the Max Reflections range provides the ultimate finishing touch as Richard Bailey, managing director of Floorwise, explains: “Increasingly, homeowners are wanting a coordinated look within their home. Consumers would often have to settle for a different shade or sheen on their flooring profiles.” “The Max Reflections range gives homeowners the chance to coordinate their interior to perfection without having to resort to very expensive brass and chrome-plated brass profiles,” continues Richard. “Ideal for retailers looking to provide customers with a serious alternative that maximises profit potential and provides a genuine upselling opportunity, the profiles are perfect for retailers who pride themselves on giving customers the very best possible choice, value and quality.” With single edge, dual edge, Z edge and cover strip profiles available, the range has been engineered to provide maximum performance and aesthetic durability and comes with a higher specification than Floorwise’s Classic profile collection. Without fluting to really show off the stunning finishes, Max Reflections have far improved wear characteristics over standard profiles. T 01509 673974 www.floorwise.co.uk

At the end of the Rainbow “Give the business back to the retailer” - that’s the attractive mission statement of a unique new scheme for fairer insurance settlements which the buying groups Flooring One and ACG have set up for their members with carpet cleaning and restoration specialists Rainbow International. Rainbow International - part of the multinational ISS Facility Services Group - has a long standing record of working with insurance companies. 450 full-time technicians working from 80 UK branches clean and restore furniture and carpets when consumers make claims. What’s new is a programme which validates claims and then arranges settlement through independent carpet retailers when replacement is required. “The insurance companies have an obligation to treat customers fairly and our remit is to make sure that consumers get a proper like-for-like replacement if we can’t restore the carpet,” says Stephen McGettrick of Rainbow, who has been in retail for over 30 years. “By working with quality independent flooring retailers we can ensure high satisfaction rates for the insurance companies’ customers,” he said. The scheme is RIVAS - Rainbow International Validation And Settlement - and Rainbow aims to have its specialists on site within two days of a claim to assess the damage. Their first objective is to restore the carpet or furniture if they can but if that’s not possible, they give householders a choice of retailers from Flooring One or ACG to provide a replacement. The retailer gets the full specification and estimated replacement value of the product to be replaced and, as well as getting new business, gets a potential new customer relationship for the future.

Stephen McGettrick (left) and David Carr of Rainbow launch the RIVAS scheme at the Flooring One shown in Solihull in May.

“This is a fantastic opportunity,” says Stephen, ”and everyone is happy at the end of the process. The insurance company has an accurately validated claim, the consumer gets a replacement that matches the original quality and the local retailer gets some new business. We take a very small percentage of the retail margin to cover costs - we make our own profits on the cleaning and restoration part of the claim.” T : 01623 422488

Voice of the Trade Stewart Martin Retiring as Group Accounts Manager, Axminster Carpets In which area has Axminster changed most in the last few years? There have been major changes in our tufted ranges and the company has undergone a management restructuring.

Are the best days of the carpet business behind us? Possibly, but the manufacturers and retailers need to work together to promote proper pricing on all products that they sell - margin is key for reinvestment and advertising.

What’s your favourite Axminster range – and why? I love Dartmoor Patterned. The range has been one of the most consistent over the years and has great designs and colour bank.

What advice would you give to a young person thinking of a career in flooring Look for a well-established business in manufacturing, sales or retail, and ask for as much training as possible - this will provide you with a future in the trade.

What do retailers need to do better? I’d like to see the selling areas in the stores and shops better presented and retailers should not overcrowd the floor space. They also need to acknowledge customers when they enter as they are all potential buyers. Has the recession been healthy for the industry to force improvements in its marketing and efficiency? I hope so as marketing has a big part to play in the future of the carpet trade. As for efficiency I feel this is going backwards due to lack of experience of people coming into the carpet trade and not understanding the service that is required by the retailers. What’s the best thing about the carpet trade? I have enjoyed the overall camaraderie - the loyalty from retailers and sales forces. What’s the worst thing about the carpet trade? The people who come into the trade and think they know it all. Will more things change in the next 10 years than have changed in the last 10? Without doubt I hope for the better.

What was the most fun you’ve had in your career? I have been very fortunate to meet some great characters in the industry - people like Ken Smart, Gareth Hughes, Simon Dutfield and Robin Oakes to name but a few. What will you miss most about the flooring trade in retirement? The many friends I have made many of whom I hope to keep in contact with. What are you most looking forward to not doing in the future? Driving up and down the M5. What are you most looking forward to doing in the future? Spending a lot more time with my wife Nicky, daughter Lorna, my son in law and my grandchildren. I almost forgot golf, and the occasional glass of Merlot. If you hadn’t ended up in this industry, what might you have done? Played professional Rugby Union - the game I loved in my younger days and the game which these days bring rich rewards! How long is ‘too long’ to work in the flooring industry? NEVER!!

“Manufacturers and retailers need to work together to promote proper pricing on all products that they sell.” from The Stocklists

What do manufacturers need to do better? Manufacturers need to keep ranges moving forward with new colours and designs must keep up to date with fashions.

Winning weaves Co-sponsored by Jacaranda Carpets and WovenGround, the annual GoodWeave Student Design Competition has been won by Silvia Civati, a first year Textile Innovation & Design student at Loughborough University. The judging took place on 23 May 2012 when judges Giles Kime, Deputy Editor of Homes & Gardens, Ryan Kohn of Living In Space, Lucy and Richard Meager of Jacaranda Carpets and Paul Vowles of WovenGround deliberated over designs from over twelve different universities. The judges were unanimous in selecting Silvia’s design as the best interpretation of this year’s brief. Entrants were asked to take their inspiration from illustrations, patterns, textiles and ceramics from the 1960’s and 70’s when creating an original retro style rug of their own. Silvia’s winning rug is inspired by the iconic Egg chair using an outline drawing layered in a successive pattern, almost like using a Spirograph – the old 70’s geometric drawing toy. As a prize, Silvia receives a design fee and her design will be made into a high quality rug, handknotted in silk and wool, which will be unveiled at Decorex International in September and subsequently for sale through Jacaranda Carpets and WovenGround. GoodWeave UK runs the annual Student Rug Design Competition to encourage young designers to consider the importance of ethical manufacture, from the very start of their careers and thereby highlight GoodWeave’s work to end exploitative child labour in the rug industry.

Lowering damp The TacFast mechanical fix system is for contractors and specifiers looking to save time and money when installing floorcoverings while still achieving excellent results. Transforming the installation practice for a variery of floors, TacFast is also an incredibly effective damp-proof membrane. Featuring a unique interlocking disc and plate system that sits above the subfloor and a hook and loop fastening system that securely affixes the floorcovering to the TacFast surface, removing the need for adhesives or complex subfloor preparation, this innovative installation system really does keep costs down. One of the major benefits of TacFast is that it acts as a damp-proof membrane, effectively preventing any damp from seeping into the floorcovering and eliminating any future problems. The polypropylene construction of the TacFast LocPlate plates will not react with damp concrete subfloors or indeed water, and the individual plates act as a moisture and vapour barrier. Any surface dampness migrating through the concrete will condense underneath the polypropylene layer, preventing any further damp from oozing through. Most importantly, mould or mildew is very unlikely to generate underneath the TacFast system, as there will be limited or no airflow. Suitable for use with many different types of floor, including wood, laminate, ceramics, natural stone, LVT and carpet tiles, TacFast provides the ultimate flooring installation solution.
