JMF Herefords and SimAngus, 11th Annual Bull Sale

Page 1

Welcome!

Hello everyone, welcome to our 11th annual sale! What a year it has been for the cattle industry. Record high prices that seem to keep holding! As cattle producers, we know we always need to be thinking conservatively, but it feels great to be optimistic!

We are located in west-central Minnesota just on the east side of the South Dakota border. We currently operate a Hereford and SimAngus cowherd of 100 females at our west farm location. We graze low bottoms or high rocky ridges that are unable to be farmed. We also graze cornstalks or cover crop in the fall. At our east farm, we also custom background about 220 calves at a time.

At JMF, we have always kept the maternal factor in mind while making our breeding decisions. Maternal matters! We have NEVER entertained trimming feet on a cow to keep her in the herd. Udders need to be problem free. The cow herself needs to survive off what is put in front of her. Often times, it is low quality grass hay or corn stalks, silage for energy, and modified distillers to fill in the cracks.

As our focus on maternal stays steady, our emphasis on efficiency and performance holds strong as well. By using a Hereford, SimAngus or SimFord bull, you are taking full advantage of one of the best ways to implant heterosis. We expect our product to create value for the folks that buy the bulls and in turn, show profit on their bottom line.

A “norm” that I have come to terms with is how crazy life has been these last few years. As the kids have gotten older, they have become great help and a vital part of keeping our everyday operation going. I want to give a big THANK YOU to all of them for how hard they work and how much they love this way of life.

I’ve come to a conclusion that we have two passions: raising the best seedstock we can and raising our kids. You will get introduced to them on sale day but watch for them in our pre-sale video to get a true grasp of what they can really do. Also, a special and sincere thank you goes out to my wife, Makayla! She works harder than all of us and keeps us all on track.

In closing, I’d like to say we are confident that any bull on this sale could go into your program and add value. We look forward to the privilege of working with you.

Contact us any time with questions, we love to talk cattle!

See you on Sale Day!

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Terms of the sale are cash. All lots are to be paid in full at the conclusion of the sale. Absentee buyers are to pay within 2 weeks of the sale.

WINTERING, BULL DEVELOPMENT, AND INSURANCE

JMF would like to develop the yearling bulls until April 1, 2025 at no charge. By April 1st, they will have their semen exam, receive pre-breeding vaccinations, and be ready for pickup or delivery. We do ask that you take possession of your bull(s) at this time. After April 1st, yardage will be charged at $5/head/ day. 18-month-old and 2-year-old bulls have already passed their semen exam and we ask that you take possession of these bulls sale day or as soon as possible. Cattle left at JMF will be at buyers risk immediately following the sale. We strongly encourage buyers to purchase a mortality insurance policy for any animal(s) left to be wintered. Please let us know if you need a contact for insurance and we would be happy to assist you with that.

DIRECTIONS

Located 4 miles north of Holloway, MN on Highway 59, turn west on County Road 56. JMF West Farm is the first place on the north.

GUARANTEE

All yearling bulls will have passed a breeding soundness exam prior to pickup or delivery on or after April 1, 2025. 18-month-old and 2-year-old bulls have passed a breeding soundness exam prior to the sale. In addition to the standard Terms and Conditions of the American Hereford Association and American Simmental Association, we will provide the first breeding season (the 90-day period immediately following turnout) guarantee on all bulls. This guarantee is not an insurance or mortality policy, but a guarantee on functional fertility. It is not a substitute or replacement for poor management. Buyer assumes all risks for injury due to running bulls together or management decisions outside genetic control. For the guarantee to apply, we ask that you contact us as soon as a condition is observed and before the animal is sold. We will work with you to determine whether the animal is returned or sold for slaughter. We will attempt to provide a suitable replacement. If one cannot be provided of equal or greater value, we will issue a sale credit to be used in a future sale for the full purchase price less the salvage value of the animal.

SALE FORMAT AND BASE PRICES

Again this year, we will be having a live auction with an auctioneer. Base prices for all bulls are at $3,500. All lots are to be paid in full at the conclusion of the sale.

DVAUCTION

NEW! We would enjoy having you join us on sale day, but if you cannot, we now offer you the convenience of bidding and buying from home. See page 13 if online bididng is new to you and you’re looking for more information.

VIDEOS

SEMEN INTEREST

JMF will be retaining a 1/3 semen interest on all bulls selling for in-herd use only. The buyer receives 100% of the salvage value.

CANDIDATE FOR HEIFERS

JMF Herefords and SimAngus is calling certain individuals as a “candidate for heifers.” This means we have evaluated, to our best ability, to select bulls that we feel you will have the least amount of trouble and the most amount of success in breeding your heifers. However, this is not a guarantee you will never pull a calf out of these bulls or never have trouble. Know your operation and know your cattle while selecting bulls.

ABSENTEE BIDDING

If internet bidding is not suitable for you, please make arrangements to bid over the phone. Call Jared or Makayla to get lined up.

DELIVERY

Free delivery on all bulls within a 200-mile radius of the sale. In the event you have a further distance to travel, we will assist in the coordination of your animals’ delivery.

Historian was the high selling bull in our 2024 sale. He’s a combination of calving ease along with performance. We calved out a dozen heifers in our fall program out of him on pasture and were all unassisted. His calves are consertively marked, deep, and long. 427M’s mother displays a beautiful udder with level, short teats. 427M’s grandmother is a rock-solid Hickok 15X daughter. 427M is a bull you can use on heifers, make sweet moderate females, and maintain performance.

We apologize for this novice picture - the 4053 sons are some of the hardest for us to picture but we sure love the kind like 399L. He is super long and thick made. This cow family is one of our quietest, easy going cow families we have. We feel his progeny will have big carcass weights. The folks that have purchased his maternal brothers in the past have been very complementary of them.

Soggy made, deep bodied bull. Add depth of body and performance.

The SimFord (Simmental x Hereford) composite cross has been gaining attention in these past few years. It was a cross made by accident but now it is being pursued by design. One of our top producing Sim females, 954G, is a SimFord cow by L379’s mother. We have been breeding a small percentage of cows this way and plan to have a small group of SimFord bulls each year. The SimFord is a combination of high end maternal, performance, and structure. The blend of Hereford, Angus, and Simmental breeds have created a very efficient type of cattle. We feel the cross is very complementary to the commercial cattleman. These two bulls, L387 and L391, are both out of first calf heifers and calved unassisted on fall pasture.
