Western favorites.
Does anyone have a problem with their kids watching Western movies? Asking for a friend. Okay, well actually I’m asking for myself - because I just have to know if my kids are the only ones out there who can’t get enough of the old-time action?! I mean, they even enjoy the really old black and white Westerns. I feel like this is not normal! When they’re in the middle of a show, I can’t even bribe them with cookies or ice cream to peel their eyes off the TV. (Ahem, my husband included... ha!) So yes, you assumed right and Jared gets the credit for introducing our kids to all the cowboy films of the past. John Wayne in particular is the fan favorite in our house. I mean, don’t get me wrong. Red River is very inspirational, and Rio Bravo is a great show to watch if you need a good laugh. I even catch myself singing along with Dean Martin to the song “My Rifle, My Pony and Me,” and it’s pretty easy to laugh at Stumpy just because he is laughing. I guess the Western shows of the past aren’t so bad after all, especially compared to what they are making for kids these days. I think our family is due for another popcorn and movie night - I’ll be there for the snacks! Whew - January was a busy month but things sure aren’t slowing down for February! Our team has crafted another fantastic issue full of all things cattle and bull sales. We hope you enjoy! It’s still not too late to inquire with us about catalog design, sale promotional materials, or ring service. We would love to be part of your marketing plan. By Design ... Our fall-calving program is by design. Our cattle are bred, born and raised to excel in conditions opposite of most production seasons. They are tough, resilient and prolific. Sure, calving in August might be easier than March, however maternal and actual performance in the winter are antagonistic to nature and we identify and eliminate those unworthy of staying in our herd. Conformation, muscle, foot structure, disposition, performance and maternal strengths are backed by breed-leading EPDs for growth and carcass. At the end of the day, our customers need cows that do their job, payweight at weaning and carcass traits that build a reputation with their feeders.
We are raising beef ... by design.

K
evin Jensen literally started his cattle operation from scratch. As a teenager, Kevin and his brother, Kirk, dipped their proverbial toes in the cattle industry with the purchase of a heifer for a 4-H project. “We are unique in the fact that we started from one 4-H show heifer in 1972 and really didn’t have an acre of land,” Kevin Jensen recalled. “My parents were both babies of large families and there wasn’t enough farm for them by the time they got older.” Now fast-forward 50 years to today, a time when Jensen Bros. Herefords, headquartered in Courtland, Kan., is well-rooted in the Hereford business. Breeding national champions and operating with hundreds of purebred cattle, the Jensen family reigns as one of the nation’s leading Hereford breeders.
STARTING FROM SCRATCH Kevin Jensen’s beginnings were humble and scarce, but his determination was plentiful. “My thoughts were to build a herd; I wasn’t really sure how I was going to do it. But where there is a will, there is a way,” Kevin said. By the time Kevin attended junior college he had built a small herd and started to show cattle for other people. The fitting and showing side of his business began to flourish and people within the Hereford breed took notice. “Jim and Sue Rowland with G&R Herefords were very instrumental in helping me. At first, they even loaned me a truck and a trailer,” Kevin reminisced. “By the time we got done I had shown a bull that had won several national shows for them. So, it worked for both of us.” An unexpected blessing arose from Kevin’s time working on the cattle show circuit – he met, Sheila, his future wife. Sheila grew up in Manitoba, Canada raising polled Herefords, Simmentals, and Short-

horns. “Her family was rich with history in the purebred business, so she brought a wealth of knowledge to the operation,” Kevin said. Kevin and Sheila started to expand their herd on rented land in Kansas. Then in 1985, they used their part of the proceeds from the sale of a heifer they were showing on a share to make a down payment

on a quarter section of land. Their registered herd began to grow as did Kevin and Sheila’s family. The two started their family in 1992 with the birth of their son, Brady. In the years to follow, the Jensens welcomed daughter, Brooke, and then son, Ben.
left Premier Hereford Breeder, 2024 NWSS.
BUILDING SUCCESS One of the Jensens’ earliest successes came from their work with a bull calf raised by friend and fellow Hereford breeder, Tom Ihry from Hope, N.D. The Jensens’ care, fitting, and showing of IHRY GK RACE, helped propel the bull to
national acclaim. “He was a twotime national champion and raised a lot of bull calves and semen that got sent all over the world and that is what really catapulted us in many ways,” Kevin explained. RACE was also the sire of G&R Raceway 1900, a bull Kevin fitted for Jim and Sue Rowland, that won the Hereford show at the National Western Stock Show in Denver and the American Royal in Kansas City. “Those are the things that got us going,” Kevin said. The Jensens’ fitting business grew quickly. For three decades they hauled large show strings to state fairs and national shows. “We went to every state fair from California to Tennessee, Maryland, Texas, and North Dakota. We traveled the entire United States with our fitting service and a group of young people, showing hundreds of head of cattle and meeting other breeders. That’s how we made many of our connections,” Sheila Jensen explained.

February 2024 | THE STOCKMAN
Though showing, fitting, and herd building produced success, the Jensens relied on other avenues to help their business thrive as well. “When you start from scratch you have to figure out ways to make things work and cattle have done it in one aspect or another,” Kevin said. In the early days of the operation, Kevin worked purebred cattle sales. Much of the time, that work was for National Cattle Services Inc., owned by Eddie and Ruth Sims. Kevin’s role took him to cattle operations and sales all over the country and gave him opportunities to network with other breeders. In the later years, as the Jensens scaled down their fitting business, they added Jensen Genetic Center, a custom semen herd bull collection facility. The satellite facility is affiliated with Hawkeye Breeders Service located in Adel, Iowa. From their beginnings through present day, Sheila has operated Jensen Livestock Agency, a livestock insurance business, which covers cattle across the United States and takes her to many cattle shows and sales.
HEREFORD HERD The family relies on their longtime herdsman, Eddie Sandberg to help with all aspects of the ranch. He has been a vital part of Jensen Bros. for 20 years. Currently, Jensens Bros. operates with 350 momma cows. Due to the drought, the herd numbers are down slightly. The Jensens primarily run a spring calving herd, but also calve a small group of cattle in the fall.
The operation has a vibrant embryo transfer (ET) program. The donor pen consists of 10 to 20 females each year. In vitro fertilization is the Jensens’ method of choice for flushing their donor cows. The Jensens raise about 450 calves annually, a hundred of those are ET calves. THE STOCKMAN | February 2024

Most of the ranch’s recipient females are purebred Herefords. “It makes more sense to us to have purebred Hereford cows raising purebred Hereford calves. It also puts a little bit more faith in what you are doing,” Kevin shared. The genetics in the Jensens’ herd come from deep-rooted cow families. Some of their first purchases derived from a group of older cows from Messersmith Ranch. “We knew they were proven and had longevity and basically our whole herd is based around about 10 of 24
those cows,” Kevin stated. To this day, some of the cattle in the Jensen herd can be traced back to the champion pedigrees from the operation’s earliest days. “Primarily in the last 20 years it’s the same cow families that are doing it for us now, that were doing it for us then. It’s different bulls we have used on them, but it is the same cow families and we kind of pride ourselves on that,” Kevin said. As seedstock producers the family is striving to strike a balance
between show ring champions and performance cattle. “I guess we are in the minority right now with what we are doing, but I really believe we should keep real life business in our show cattle and some quality, look, and phenotype in our commercial cattle,” Kevin shared. February 2024 | THE STOCKMAN
SALES AND MARKETING A significant part of the Jensen operation centers on producing high-quality bulls for commercial cattle producers. Jensen Bros. hosts an annual bull sale the first Thursday in March. The operation’s spring bull sale features 100 bulls. Many of the ranch’s bull customers are commercial cattle producers. The operation also hosts an annual female sale in October and an online female sale in April. The female sales feature elite Hereford show heifers and bred females for producers looking to enhance their herd.

they were successful in the show ring and active in the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA). Brady and Brooke both held officer positions on the NJHA board. Brooke also served as the National Hereford Queen.
Kevin served for many years on the American Hereford Association (AHA) board of directors; he was elected to the first board of directors to preside over the AHA organization after it merged with the American Polled Hereford Association. During his tenure on the
The entire Jensen family has been involved in judging livestock shows. Brady, Brooke, and Ben competed on Kansas State’s livestock judging team. Kevin and Sheila have traveled to judge cattle shows throughout the United States and Canada, as well as other parts of the world including New Zealand, Australia, and Argentina. Additionally, the Jensen family hosts numerous livestock judging teams at the ranch throughout the year.

He’s got all the characteristics we’re looking for in a herd sire: muscle, style, sound on all 4 feet and legs, great front end, good hair and a great attitude. On top of that, he is a total outcross for all breeds and will work on just about anything. He was Reserve Grand Champion at the NAILE and headed to Oklahoma City and Denver. FINDING A BALANCE BETWEEN BIGGEST AND BEST: MOVING A COWHERD TOWARD OPTIMUM PRODUCTIVITY T
he use of genetic selection tools by cattle breeders has resulted in significant changes within the majority of major breeds over the last 30 years. With a few exceptions, the overwhelming genetic trend has been for more milk, higher weaning weight, and bigger mature weight. Without question, the use of Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) has enabled this change. While we have achieved our goals of more, have we achieved our goals of better? The late Dr. Bob Taylor from Colorado State University said it well, “Profitable cattle are usually productive, but productive cattle are not always profitable.”
WEANING WEIGHT QUESTIONS
been relatively no change?
Four different benchmark data sets for commercial cow-calf producers from the states of Minnesota, North Dakota, Kansas, as well as Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma have shown little to no change in average weaning weights or calf weaning rates in terms of the percentage of calves weaned per cow exposed over the last 15 years. This has to prompt the question why? How can it be that there has been such significant genetic change in several breeds that should increase weaning weights, but records from several commercial cow-calf data sets would indicate that there has
In 2014, Dr. David Lalman from Oklahoma State University made a presentation at the Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle meeting titled “Matching Cows to Forage Resources in a World of Mixed Messages.” In that presentation, Dr. Lalman made the case that the genetic potential of many cattle today is not supported by the forage resources available, so the animals never fully express their genetic potential. He presented data that shows the cost of maintaining larger cows with higher milk potential exceeds the value produced by small increases in calf weaning weights. In 1988, Dr. Rick Bourdon, wrote a paper titled “Bovine Nirvana – From the Perspective of a Modeler and Purebred Breeder” where he presented the case that genetic selection should be toward the optimum for what a set of resources or environment could support. Dr. Bourdon stated, “To breed for optimum means to have a target insight beyond which you don’t want to go. If your goal is to maintain an optimum level for any trait, the evidence of your accomplishment is not visible change, but lack of it.”

REPLACEMENT HEIFER CONSIDERATIONS Cow-calf producers have EPDs and index tools to make genetic selection decisions related to traits that impact levels of productivity and longevity. Producers selecting sires from which to develop replacement heifers may want to evaluate where their cow herd is compared to what they believe optimum to be. Producers can work with beef cattle genetic specialists and breed association representatives to help them identify what EPD levels for milk, weaning weight and mature weight best meet their target. What a producer identifies as optimum in terms of milk production, weaning weight and mature size can vary significantly from one operation to another depending upon resources available and management. When
THE STOCKMAN | February 2024
optimum is identified, sires can be selected to produce daughters whose maintenance energy, longevity, level of milk production and mature weight will move the cow herd toward identified goals given available resources. Identifying and selecting optimum genetics for milk production and mature weight is a genetics selection approach that may require a change in focus for many cow-calf producers. It may mean selecting sires at a bull sale that are at or below breed average to move the cow herd genetically toward a desired level for certain traits. Selecting a bull that is “below breed average” is a paradigm shift for many cow-calf producers. Identifying a window of optimum given a set of resources and then selecting cattle that hit the optimum target is the
goal under this method of cattle breeding. Success in selecting for optimum means that for many producers they will be selecting sires whose EPDs for milk production and mature weight will decrease the average in their herd. Simultaneously, they should be using EPDs to select for traits that will maintain or improve fertility and longevity. Genetic selection and breeding programs should focus on increased profit, and in many cases this may mean selection for decreased mature weight and milk production to move future replacements for the cowherd towards optimum. Petersek’s Raven Angus focuses on bringing the next generation into the business while building outstanding Angus and horse herds.
T
he best cattle herds start small. Petersek’s Raven Angus, Colome, S.D., started with only 10 registered Angus cows in 1955. Ray and Betty Petersek had a vision to raise Angus cattle, and it’s a vision that five generations of Peterseks have been able to participate in today.
52
Ray is still going strong at age 96, with a mind that remains as sharp as a tack. His son, Rod, and Rod’s wife, Leslie, were always more interested in the commercial cattle industry, while Ray pushed for using AI and outside bulls to improve the genetic bloodline.
“Through the 1970s and 80s, Grandpa took several trips to look at cattle, and sold a show calf heifer prospect to California,” said Rod and Leslie’s son, Reed. “While Dad is more of the worker bee, he maintains what we’re trying to do with the cattle.”
February 2024 | THE STOCKMAN
FAMILY INVOLVEMENT The entire family has been involved in rodeo to some extent. Reed participated in rodeo events in college, even competing on the Badlands Circuit. The 1,000-head herd transitioned from Ray to Rod, Reed and his brother RJ in 2003. “Bringing in the next generation is very important to keeping the family farm running, because they bring in new energy and different ideas,” RJ said. “There’s no way I could’ve gotten started without help from my dad and grandpa.” RJ’s wife, Sara, handles all the paperwork for the registered side of the business. Their 21-year-old son, Linkyn, and his fiancé, Saige, are a big part of the operation, and their son, Briggs, age 1, is just getting exposed to the joys of raising cattle, while RJ and Sara’s daughters, Libbie, 19, and Preslie, 17, are also involved. Reed and his wife, Erin, have five children: Owen, 9; Sam, 7; Raya, 5; Lex, 3; and Rollie, 11 months. Before joining the cattle operation fulltime in 1999, Rod and Leslie told RJ and Reed to go to college or join the military. RJ did both— joining the National Guard for six years before pursuing a degree in

civil engineering from Southeast Technical College in Sioux Falls. All along, ranching was his dream. Reed also served in the National Guard for eight years before getting an animal science degree from South Dakota State University. He met his wife, Erin, while at SDSU, and she manages the bookwork for the commercial side, planning for the heifer sale, and organizing data to help Reed and RJ make good decisions. The brothers have two separate ranch locations about an hour apart, but all of the cattle are jointly owned. RJ handles the females that calve in January and February, while Reed manages the March and April calving herd. Developing animals for the bull sale is done at RJ and Rod’s place and the heifer breeding and development is done at Reed’s place.

The Peterseks focus on breeding functional cows with good feet and legs, milking ability, and maternal instinct.

COWS THAT WILL LAST The operation focuses on breeding Angus cows that have fertility, longevity, performance, and quality carcass traits. The vast majority of bulls from Petersek’s Raven Angus are sold to commercial breeders, so the Peterseks strive to breed cows that will last and be profitable.
transfer, breeding females to many of their own bulls that they’ve sold, but some outside bulls, too. BUBS Southern Charm AA31 is one bull they’re using right now, and he’s left a nice set of daughters in the Petersek herd. After females are artificially inseminated for two cycles in the
spring, they are turned out on grass around May 20, with bulls accompanying them. The Peterseks utilize rotational grazing, and also farm corn, soybeans, alfalfa, oats, and forage wheat for feed. “Soybeans are a rotational crop that we’ll chop for silage to feed to the cows,” RJ said.
“It’s tough to get it all done in one, but we’re trying to do that,” RJ said. Reed agreed, “Our bread and butter is commercial cattlemen, who need bulls every year. We focus on traits that make them money.” The Petersek brothers emphasize a breeding program that results in functional cattle that travel well, milk well, and raise good calves. “Our biggest challenge is trying to stay in the middle,” Reed said. “We’re trying to balance the carcass and maternal side, and that can be tough.” The Peterseks use a lot of artificial insemination and embryo 54

Indoor calving begins around January 10. The females that calve in March or April do sometimes calve outside, depending on the weather. Calves born in January or February are weaned around September 1, while March and April calves are weaned around October 1.
LEVERAGING CONNECTIONS Over the years, their bull sales have been tremendously successful. ABS purchased a bull from Petersek’s Raven Angus, Raven Powerball 53, and RJ says his daughters are excellent. RJ said the operation will be selling 360 bulls at their upcoming sale. Petersek’s Raven Angus also hosts a commercial bred heifer sale in early December, selling 600 to 700 heifers. “Our goal is to always be consistent,” Reed said. “We want the first bull and last bull that go into the ring to look the same. That will create consistency for our customers.” Making connections was another big part of the college experience for Reed, who says that those connections have helped the cattle operation grow from selling around 100 bulls to more than 300. “The challenge of adding on is marketing,” Reed said. “We wantTHE STOCKMAN | February 2024

bulls are delivered within 100 to 200 miles. We may have a small circle, but it’s growing.” Although their footprint is predominantly in the Midwest, Petersek’s Raven Angus has sold cattle to Virginia and everywhere from the East Coast to the West Coast.
GROWING HORSE HERD At the most recent heifer sale, Petersek’s Raven Angus also sold some horses. Linkyn is the spearhead for the horses and is building a base with a stud and a string of mares. “My nephew has a great touch with horses and is doing a nice job,” Reed said. “We’ve all used horses growing up on the ranch, so I’m thinking the horse side of the business will grow in the future.”

BRIGHT OUTLOOK With the fifth generation already growing up on the ranch, Petersek’s Raven Angus sure has a bright future. With Linkyn’s growing involvement, Reed is also hopeful that the operation can produce enough cattle and horses to provide his kids with the option to return to the ranch as well. learn more ravenangus.com
The horse bloodlines are all cow-oriented, working horses. Although Reed said the family got into raising horses as a byproduct of raising cattle, the animals make life so much easier.
“Last winter, you couldn’t get around on anything with wheels,” Reed said. “You had to have a horse to get any work done.”

Seeds in Season
Functional forage and pasture.
contributed article by Justin Fruechte, Ag Product Expert Renovo Seed, Brookings, S.D. renovoseed.com
IS IT TIME TO GRAZE MY FARM GROUND? Price cycles are inevitable; the
good producers thrive and expand while the bad crash and burn after the highs retract. Land management that enables cow herd expansion can be a conundrum, due to time for establishment of perennials, lack of infrastructure on cropland, leased land with short rental agreements, and more. But, what if we could run short-term grazing scenarios that alleviated those same concerns?
GRAZING CROPLAND Lower cash prices for commodity grains, coupled with higher fat and feeder cattle prices, opens the opportunity to run grazing scenarios of productive cropland. So, let’s take a look at how to map this out through a crop rotation and put the budgets together so it stays profitable. We’ll focus on annual grazing systems to ensure the fastest establishing, highest yield option that doesn’t tie up land if prices change fast.
Let’s focus on 2024. Start by planting a cool season annual grazing mix, along with a separate warm season annual mix in the same field. This separation of fields allows you to maintain quality grazing throughout the season. If you planted the entire intended grazing acres to all cool season species and rotated through it, the last paddock would either be too mature, or you would have to start on the first paddock too early and forfeit yield.
COOL SEASON PLANTINGS The cool season mix should contain cereal grains such as forage oats, forage barley, and triticale. I recommend planting them all, to hedge maturities and environmental conditions. Along with the grass, I’d incorporate a legume such as forage peas and lentils. These are two of the highest yielding annual legumes that will generate nitrogen. The final cocktail ingredient should be fast establishing spring brassicas such as forage rape, kale, or swede.
WARM SEASON PLANTINGS
70
February 2024 | THE STOCKMAN
The warm season mix planted on the other half of the field will cover the summer slump and carry grazing into the fall. This should consist of millet and BMR sorghum-sudan grass hybrids, warm season legumes like cow peas and dry beans, and brassicas with bulbs that grow into the fall such as turnips and collards.
YIELD VALUES Potential yield from these mixes will be 6 to 8 ton as fed, so we’ll figure on 14,000 lbs. When grazing, the utilization rate is usually around 60 percent. This leaves 8,400 lbs. of forage consumed. Let’s plan on grazing cow/calf pairs with a total average weight of 1,600 lbs. that eat 2.5 percent of that weight. That equals a total of 40 lbs. consumed. If there are 40 pairs, they’ll need 1,600 lbs. per day, which means they can eat on that 8,400 lbs. produced for 5.25 days. The val-
ue to graze a pair is at least $3.00/ pair/day. Forty pairs at $3.00 for 5.25 days/acre means a gross value of $630/acre. With expenses of rent, fertilizer, seed, planting, and fencing – my figures show a total of less than $400/acre.
If you are striving to expand your cow herd but are limited by perennial pastureland, don’t forget that cropland is grazable. These grazing systems have a high reward when calf prices are high, and a long-term reward for your land and soil.
The best part of this system is that 40 percent of what grew is still out on the field. The nutrient value and carbon increase is what builds soil health to increase yield of cash crops when they return to the rotation. And don’t forget, there are numerous carbon inset programs paying producers to plant a cover crop and incorporate more grazing. Though not for everyone, these are easily awarded dollars for doing simple practices with minimal red tape.

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR FARM OR RANCH IF YOU BECOME DISABLED? E
state and transition planning often focuses on what happens to the farm or ranch at the death of a key person. However, a good estate and transition plan should also include contingencies for disability. Planning for a disability is not an easy task because the severity and duration of the disability are unknown. Here are some key items to have in place to protect you and your operation from disability: 1. A contingency plan for labor. Who will be responsible for taking on the additional work? Short-term or long-term, the work must get done. Does your operation have a contingency plan? All employees should be cross-trained in multiple roles within the operation. The operation should also be financially prepared to hire additional labor or outsource when possible. 2. An emergency fund. A disability may bring not only medical expenses but also a loss of income. Most financial advisors recommend 3-6 months of expenses saved in a liquid account for emergencies.
82
3. A legal entity that protects your farm or ranch assets. How is your operation protected from individual medical debt? The reality is that disability is often preceded by a medical emergency. One way to protect a farm or ranch is to organize it as its own legal entity, such as an LLC or S corporation so that creditors cannot seize the assets. If the farm or ranch is a separate legal entity, it is imperative that its bylaws are followed such as separate bank accounts and annual meetings. If a creditor sees that it is not being treated as a separate entity, they may try to seize the assets. 4. Power of Attorney. Who can make business and financial decisions? A Power of Attorney (POA) allows you to designate a trusted person (an agent) to make financial or business decisions on your behalf while you are alive but unable to make these decisions yourself. This power can be limited to specific decisions or situations, such as mental incapacity. A POA expires at death. Each member of the operation should have a POA in place.
5. Living Will or Advanced Medical Directive and Power of Attorney for Healthcare. One of the more difficult decisions to make is your wishes for medical care. In a “Living Will” or “Advanced Medical Directive” you will outline what types of medical care you want to receive when you are unable to make them yourself, such as life support. In addition to this document, you should also appoint a Power of Attorney for Healthcare. This person does not have to be the same person who you chose to handle your business affairs. 6. A buy-sell agreement with provisions for disability. What mechanisms are available to transfer after disability but before death? If you have legal documents in place that outline conditions for the sale or transfer of assets at death, make sure they also define the terms for disability. For example, a buy-sell agreement may allow a disabled person to sell assets at the time of their disability rather than waiting for death.
February 2024 | THE STOCKMAN
7. Disability Insurance. The reality is that disability insurance for farmers and ranchers may not be cost-effective. However, Social Security may provide disability benefits if you become severely disabled. In order to qualify for Social Security, you must pay Social Security/ Self Employment taxes for a certain length of time. Showing little or no profit year after year means that you may not be qualifying for Social Security benefits. Changing the legal structure of the farm or ranch business, establishing powers of attorney, and incorporating the possibility of disability into your estate plan requires professional legal assistance. Discuss these issues with your attorney and financial advisor in developing your own plan for preparing for the possibility of disability. If you, or someone you know has become disabled, there are resources available to help you continue to farm or ranch through AgrAbility. AgrAbility’s mission is to enhance quality of life for farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural workers with disabilities, so that they, their families, and their communities continue to succeed in rural America. For this target audience, “success” may be defined by many parameters, including gainful employment in production agriculture or a related occupation; access to appropriate assistive technology needed for work and daily living activities; evidence-based information related to the treatment and rehabilitation of disabling conditions; and targeted support for family caregivers of AgrAbility customers. Woolover® Limited
Fit N Forget (FnF™) Beef Calf Cover
Fitting the FnF™ Beef Calf Cover to a new-born increased the actual hide temperature of the calf by 32 degrees Fahrenheit in just four minutes! All beef ranchers are seeking to maximize their returns from their operation. A main income generator is the number of live calves that make weaning. The weather during late winter and spring can, and does, influence the number of newborn beef calves that survive some very brutal weather that can literally devastate the very survival of these new-borns. Woolover® Ltd, based in New Zealand, is no stranger to devastating stock losses. In fact, Woolover® Ltd was “born of necessity” back in 1993 after two snowstorms, 10 days apart, claimed the lives of 2 million lambs and 40,000 calves. The answer is WOOL - Working 24/7. USDA figures suggest towards 80,000 new-born beef calves perish annually from hypothermia. Woolover® Ltd then set about designing and making a beef calf cover that was totally biodegradable, made from wool, is designed to fit an 85 lb new-born beef calf, and would simply “fall off” after 3- 4 weeks having ensured the new-born beef calf survived, was accepted by the mother, and captured some additional growth rates along the way. The Result: The Woolover® Fit N Forget (FnF™) Beef Calf Cover. • New-born calves fitted with the FnF™ Beef Calf Cover are simply not at risk of dying from hypothermia, and they will grow faster. • The cover is totally biodegradable with wool providing the warmth and absorbency to wick moisture away from the hide and the Hessian Substrate providing some strength. Be it rain, snow, windchill or, simply from the birth process, covering a new-born beef calf with the FnF™ Beef Calf Cover makes sound financial sense. The cover will last for up to 3 – 4 weeks and then falls off. • Designed for an 85 lb. live weight beef calf at birth, which is the optimum weight, but will also fit smaller calves. • Wool is providing the warmth, is absorbent, breathable, comfortable to wear, is totally biodegradable and will ensure the Thermo – Neutral Zone, being the heart/ lung area, is kept at a constant temperature, both day and night despite the worst possible conditions = survival. Dr. Clint Hilt, leading Veterinarian with MWI Animal Health, based in Power, Montana, who assisted with a trial of 50 FnF™ Beef Calf Covers on his clients’ newborn calves said, “THESE COVERS ARE LIVESAVERS.” The trial was conducted on a day when it was -23 degrees Fahrenheit and, by simply fitting a FnF™ Beef Calf Cover to a new-born, the actual hide temperature of the calf increased by 32 degrees Fahrenheit in four minutes! The Woolover® Limited FnF™ Beef Calf Covers: ORDER ONLINE at www.wooloverdirect.com or phone: Busse Barron Acres [ BBA ] 715 296 7596. FnF™ Beef Calf Covers are sold in units of 100 or packages of 10.

DETAILS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE A
s we start the calving season as well as the subsequent breeding season, there are a few points that can make a real difference in results. Many of these things have been mentioned in previous articles and are worth pointing out again.
COLOSTRUM IS CRITICAL Make sure calves are nursing within the first two hours of birth. The first two hours are when the calf has the highest absorption of colostrum. If the calf is not getting up to nurse, we recommend that the cow is milked out and then tube feed colostrum to the calf. We also like to use commercially available colostrum products to tube the calf with if time is limited or it is too difficult to work with the cow. The commercial products we like to use are actual powdered colostrum that have all of the immunoglobulins, fats, proteins, and sugars present. In our experience, these products have worked quite well. If using powdered colostrum, please give the whole bag to the calf. We will see producers give only a partial bag thinking they will suppress the nursing reflex if they make the calf too full. This can actually backfire if the calf never does get up to nurse in a 96
timely manner, resulting in the calf not getting enough immunity from passive transfer from colostrum. Calf immunity is dependent on quantity of colostrum consumed as well as quality. I have routinely given 2 quarts of colostrum to a new calf and am amazed at how quickly they will go back to nurse the cow on their own in a short amount of time. By giving the full amount of colostrum, you can get a large portion of the required immunoglobulin needed into the calf and it will also improve the calf’s cognition, improving the calf’s ability to nurse.
PROBLEMS WITH SEPTICEMIA If the calf is acting slow within the first couple days of birth, there is a good probability it is septic. Septicemia is basically a blood infection and can be very depressing on the calf, resulting in poor nursing frequency. Often the mother of this type of a calf will have a fuller bag due to the reduced nursing frequency. Septicemia likely is coming in from the wet navel at birth and does not always result in a hard infected navel. It’s very important to be aggressive with treat-
ment on this type of calf. The response to treatment is usually pretty good if started early. When left too long, this will often lead to arthritis or scours.
VITAMIN A DEFICIENCY If you are having a lot of problems with new calves wanting to nurse at birth, there may be a vitamin A deficiency in the cows. Often this is the main symptom you will see in a deficient cow herd. It is easy to diagnose with a blood serum test and can be run on a small percentage of the cows to get an idea of the status. Many of the winter diets in the Midwest are based on a silage, distillers, and a corn stover mix and are often the type of diet that is being fed when we find deficiencies. There is vitamin A in the mineral, but there is a large amount of degradation that occurs to vitamin A when it is in contact with mineral. Vitamin A can easily be supplemented in the ration with a vitamin A premix added to the TMR or using an injectable form of vitamin A in the cow.

LIVE VACCINE PROTOCOLS Another question we get asked a lot by producers is if they can still use a partial of mixed modified live vaccine the next day. It is recommended to use modified live vaccine within an hour after mixing for best results. We will only mix 50 doses at a time when processing cattle and if you are doing procedures where there is a lot of time-consuming activity such as freeze branding or tattooing you may only want to mix 10 doses at a time.
HANDLING SEMEN AND EMBRYOS
EMBRYO SHIPPING
Attention to detail when handling semen and embryos is also an important management tool. Keep the tanks fairly full of liquid nitrogen when storing your own embryos and don’t pull embryos and semen too far out of the tank to look at them. Minimal amounts of thawing can be devastating on frozen embryos and if you are needing to look at a cane of embryos or split embryos up between canes, it is recommended to do this in a dewar of liquid nitrogen, so all of the work can be done while the straws are still submerged in nitrogen.
Many embryos are being purchased at this time of year. Don’t wait until the last minute to make arrangements to have them shipped. As the spring transfer season gets closer, the shipping tanks can often have wait times of several weeks before they are available due to the long list of shipments ahead of a late request.
When looking for cane codes on the cane tops, we like to use a flashlight so we can see the tabs clearly without having to pull the canister up into the neck of the tank. The neck of the tank is only at -80 degrees C and thaw damage can start to occur at temperatures over -130 degrees C.
THE STOCKMAN | February 2024
Also, document everything with an email to the place where they are being shipped from, so everyone is clear on where they are going to and who the buyer and seller are. We receive many tanks with a set of embryos that have no paperwork as to who they are for and where they are coming from. This can result in delays in transfers etc. because they don’t end up in the right inventory.
There are only small amounts of live virus particles in MLV vaccine and once you go beyond an hour after mixing, you are probably losing potency as the live antigens lose their viability. When the virus particles are injected in the calf within the first hour of being mixed, they will start to replicate in the body and induce immunity. While there are other things worth mentioning that can help to make a difference in results, we feel these are some of the more common things that can make a big impact on results. Don’t hesitate to call your veterinarian if you have questions about how to proceed if there is a problem. A small amount of advice can go a long way to making things go smoothly. learn more collisonembryoservices.com Dr. Vince Collison is co-owner of Collison Embryo and Veterinary Services PAC in Rockwell City, Iowa.

Tell us about yourself.
“
We are a four-generation family operation that consists of my father-inlaw, Bob, my husband, Chris, and our daughter, Sawyer. Sawyer is 20 years old and in her second year at South Dakota State University pursuing an animal science degree. We run around 200 Angus cows and operate a cow/calf operation. We show Angus cattle all over the United States and Chris judges cattle shows all over the United States. Chris, Sawyer, and I are active in the Angus Association, Angus Auxiliary, and the National Junior Angus Association. Sawyer was just nominated to serve on the National Junior Angus Association Junior Board of Directors. Our oldest daughter, Madison, is doing her medical residency in Cheyenne, Wyoming, at the Cheyenne VA Medical Center. We also grain farm, raising corn and beans.
”
What is your favorite cooking tip/trick?
“
A tip for me, for how my brain works and how I cook, is to follow a recipe so it turns out exactly the same every single time. A trick I use I actually just taught my daughter, but I’m sure many cooks do the same, is to use kitchen scissors when you can. I use them to cut scallions, dough, bacon, etc.
”
Where did you learn to cook?
In the kitchen with
Erica Styles Styles Angus - Brentford, S.D.
“
My grandma taught me how to bake and I picked up some cooking from my dad, but he didn’t like a crowded kitchen, so I basically taught myself with what I could pick up here and there when I left home after high school.

What is your least favorite job in the kitchen?
STOCK
Cowboy approved recipes used by our favorite country cooks.
I am usually always in a hurry, so chopping, dicing, peeling - that kind of food prep is my least favorite job.
”
What is your most requested dish?
“
I would say it probably is my lasagna which blows my mind because it’s a very basic recipe and so easy to make.

Our goal here at Breeder Link continues to be a quest to offer the kind of bulls that will give you the foundation you can build a herd around, that will keep you profitable long into the future. When you examine the multiple genetic traits that we have at our disposal we still think that fertility and Longevity are the biggest economic drivers for the cow-calf producer. We think that strong cow families with generations of proven cows that have bred back on time for many years and raised an above average calf are still one of the best indicators for future maternal excellence.

In the News FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THE SURVEY SAYS: ANGUS GENETICS PROVIDE VALUE THROUGH SUPPLY CHAIN Angus Media, CattleFax gather insights on current management, future intentions of cow-calf and feedlot sectors. What do commercial cattlemen pay for bulls, and how does that correlate to calf value? Are commercial herds planning to rebuild? What incentivizes feedlots to buy and to pay a premium - on a set of calves? The short answers are $4,467, and it increases; yes; and everything from feed conversion to genetic merit. But the detailed answers are available by reading Industry Insights powered by Angus MediaSM and CattleFax. The report is an executive summary of two industrywide surveys conducted to gauge industry sentiment toward Angus genetics and to gain insight into the future structure of the industry. Clay Zwilling, Angus Media president, shared the results Nov. 5, during an Angus University session at the 2023 Angus Convention in Orlando, Fla.
“Ultimately, the goal is to prepare and meet the needs of Angus members as we go on into the future of the business,” said Zwilling, adding that this first effort provides benchmark data. Future iterations will identify trends. 124
CattleFax administered the surveys to ensure an industrywide sampling and to prevent any breed bias. The cow-calf portion was conducted as part of CattleFax’s 2023 Annual Cow-Calf Survey and found a majority of producers believe genetics have improved in the last decade for multiple traits, such as carcass, growth, calving ease, maternal traits, and structure and function. CattleFax analysts conducted phone interviews to complete the extensive feedlot survey, where respondents represent 3.32 million head of cattle on feed. Almost 60% of those feedyard owners are 60 or older, indicating significant turnover in management in that sector in the coming years. “As that demographic changes, we may see shifts in cattle procurement and what they place value on,” Zwilling says. Some of the results aren’t surprising, Zwilling acknowledged, offering as example the preference for black Angus genetics at both the cow-calf and feedlot levels. Industry Insights data also gets at some intriguing details as to why. A lot of times, we make assumptions based on our perceptions, he said. “It’s always good to back it up with research like this.” Asked what role genetics play in purchasing decisions, 37% of feeders responded they pay attention to hide color, while 35% said breed composition, 11% noted sires and nearly 9% said they pay attention to genetic merit predictors. “This is an opportunity to know and look for what our folks are interested in purchasing, and how we can grow that,” he said. Zwilling shares more from the Industry Insights surveys and how cattlemen can use the results to in-
form their decisions in the Dec. 13 episode of Angus at Work, a podcast for profit-minded cattlemen. Produced by the Angus Beef Bulletin, the podcast features information on health, nutrition, genetics, management and marketing, and is available on most popular podcast platforms. males at Cattlemen’s Congress, and the heifer went on to be Supreme Champion Female at that show. One of Atkinson’s most valued accomplishments was having the ROV Show Heifer and Show Bull of the year for the 2022-2023 season. Peers select the Herdsman of the Year award winner through voting, hosted by the Association. “You’re only as good as the people around you, and I’ve got the best crew around,” he said. Atkinson from Sulphur, Oklahoma said he was surprised to be selected as Herdsman of the Year because of the caliber of other nominees. They were Miles Shout, Express Ranches; Dillon Stertzbach, Stertzbach Cattle Company; and Greg Van Zee, Udell Cattle Company. The 2024 nominees were slated by a committee of previous award winners, based on their devotion and skills spent improving a specific herd and the Angus breed. Atkinson began as a herdsman at Conley Cattle in May of 2019. There he is involved in all aspects of the ranch but spends most of his time managing the show barn, preparing cattle to show or sell. Conley Cattle hosts three sales a year, a fall and spring female production sale and a bull sale every February. Aside from sales, they manage around 250 Angus cows. Before starting at Conley Cattle, Atkinson received his associate degree from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University in agricultural business. Each year, Atkinson said he enjoys attending the Roll of Victory (ROV) Angus shows and other major shows. In 2023, he had the Champion and Reserve Angus fe126
“Last year we revamped and elevated the Herdsman of the Year selection process,” said Caitlyn Brandt, director of events and junior activities. “Since then, we’ve seen an increase in voting participation and an increase in anticipation for the results.” To be eligible to vote, exhibitors must have entered at least one of the following shows in 2023: Cattlemen’s Congress, National Western Stock Show, Western National Angus Futurity, Atlantic National, American Royal or North American International Livestock Exposition. Atkinson says there are many driving factors for why he is involved with the Angus breed. “The competition in the Angus breed is the highest level and sets the bar for the other breeds,” he said.

In addition to being detail-oriented and customer-minded, he said, “I’m also very driven by helping the youth. I truly enjoy helping the kids, especially looking back at role models I had as a kid that got me involved in the Angus breed and to where I’m at today.” To learn more about Atkinson or the other three 2024 Angus Herdsman of the Year candidates, visit the website below. — Written by Sarah Kocher, Angus Communications

STOCKMAN
traight Describe your best or worst day. What is the most used tool on your ranch? How old is it? About the Stockman. As long as I can remember I have been taking care of cattle. As a little boy I have several great memories of helping my dad and brother working cattle and checking pastures. Raising Angus cattle is a true passion of mine as well as my dad, Melvin, and my brother, Andy. We’ve been having production sales annually since 1995 and it’s always been a “family” event. My parents first met while showing cattle at a fair and my brother and I also met our spouses (Sarah and Beth) through 4-H and showing cattle. In cattle terms, we are double bred cattle enthusiasts!”

Communication is key to any business; the cell phone has allowed me to easily connect with customers and help make daily plans on the farm. The only problem with it now is that I don’t get everyone called back, lol! I often miss the good old days when we didn’t have cell phones. How did we do it!?!”
Worst day ever: It’s March/ April, you wake up to 32 to 36 degrees and it’s raining. Nothing kills calves faster, those days suck! Cold mud gives me nightmares! Best day ever: Sale day, regardless of the weather. It’s like Christmas morning. The buildup and anticipation are something we look forward to all year. I love seeing all the people and visiting about the cattle.”

A conversation with everyday Stockmen,
Tyler Musgrave Musgrave Angus of New Salem, Ill.
Your favorite non-ranch activity to do in your free time? I have four sons – I am game with anything they want to do.”
What is your least favorite job on the ranch? If I never had to graft a calf again, that would be fine with me!”

LD CAPITALIST 316 Which animal (any species) has left the greatest impact on you?
The most important lesson you’ve learned in this business?
What about the beef cattle industry excites you the most?
Quite easily LD Capitalist 316. He’s a sire that opened the door for us, bringing international visitors and siring some of the great cattle in the breed. He and his sons, Exclusive, Colossal and Stunner have left an impact on the breed that will be hard to rival. I’m humbled by all the producers who have put their faith in these sires.”
Being patient and not to get disappointed when things don’t work out how you planned. I tell myself, things happen for a reason, good and bad. Don’t let yourself be discouraged, nothing positive will ever come from that mindset. If this business was easy everyone would be doing it!”
I love genetics, they will play the biggest role in this industry. Genetic makeup will always trump indexes, EPDs, and $ value in my opinion. Know your cow families and pedigrees. It’s exciting to see how certain genetic crosses have worked in our herd.”
