the next generation. I frequently ponder the future of ag. So much has changed in the past 50 years - it’s hard to imagine what the next 50 will bring. My husband and I both grew up on cattle operations, but we started our own 11 years ago. As many of you know, when you invest that much time, sweat, and blood into something you’re passionate about, the thought of losing it someday can be frightening. There are so many questions that come to my mind. Will my kids want to take over down the road? If they do, are my husband and I teaching enough and are they learning enough? What will they need to know with ag evolving all the time? My kids sure express that they have the ‘bug’ for cattle and farm life - they can’t seem to get enough of it. Although everyone would want to make sure they take all the right steps to successfully move their operation from one generation to the next, there simply is not an easy answer. As my Dad would say, ‘Take it a day at a time.’ So each day my husband and I try to feed our kids bits and pieces of info that hopefully turn into lessons and experiences with the goal of someday giving them enough knowledge and resources to take this over. I guess time will tell, but we are sure enjoying the journey in the meantime! My husband and I held our annual bull sale in February, and on sale day every year it dawns on me that an entire year’s worth of work is presented in an hour or two. It can be stressful and overwhelming to think that the annual sale can make or break the next 12 months ahead. But the farm experiences, memories, lessons learned, and the sight of baby calves hitting pasture in the spring are worth the other 364 days!

The Stockman’s schedule for sale catalog design has been keeping us busy - we are proud and excited to offer these promotional services to you. The sale catalog gives the first impression on your cattle and your program. Might as well make it a good one!

Pinegar Limousin’s imprint on the breed.

T

he AUTO prefix signifies one of the most recognizable herds in the Limousin breed. The four- letter combination gives a nod to its owner’s occupation and denotes decades of devotion to the cattle industry. Ed Pinegar, a car dealership owner, fittingly chose AUTO to designate his Pinegar Limousin herd through the years. From its beginnings in 1992, until the present, Pinegar Limousin has held a place of prominence with breeders in the United States and Canada. People in the cattle industry have come to rely on the genetics of Pinegar Limousin for herd sires, seedstock, commercial cattle, and elite show prospects.

TRUE TO THEIR ROOTS Ed Pinegar passed away on May 23, 2020, but his passion for Limousin cattle and the people in the business lives on through Pinegar Limousin. As his family and farm managers move forward with operating the cattle business, they hold tight to the foundation, strategies, and principles Ed maintained during his ownership. 14

March 2022 | THE STOCKMAN

One of Ed’s prevailing principles was to always remember the herd’s roots. “Ed had a saying, ‘You don’t ever want to lose your identity,’” Ty Heavin, Pinegar Limousin Farm Manager, recalled. This philosophy has kept the farm grounded in all its decisions through the years.

FARM ORIGINS The operation started on the Pinegar family farm in Ebenezer, Mo. The homestead, located near Springfield, Mo., served as the spring board for the growing cattle business. The original family farm always held a special place in Ed’s heart. “That farm was somewhat sacred,” Ty explained. Ty and Susie Heavin, farm managers, have worked on the farm for almost 30 years. The operation started with registered fullblood Limousin cattle. As Pinegar Limousin grew and the Limousin breed diversified, the above Ed Pinegar on the auction block.

operation started to add purebreds, LimFlex, and commercial cattle. “Ed always said that even though his love was fullbloods, you have to have what your customer wants or needs, or they would just go down the road and buy from someone else,” Ty said.

MAINTAINING BALANCE Cattle in the registered and commercial part of Pinegar Limousin’s program must exhibit a balance of key traits. Instead of chasing volatile industry trends, farm managers focus on a really balanced animal. Ty looks for animals that move well, possess eye appeal, produce enough milk, and have moderate birthweight calves. In addition, Ty assesses the animal’s pedigree and EPDs. “I think a balanced product of one that has a pedigree that you like, has an appearance that you like, and one that is sound and good uddered

16

- I think that will take you further down the road than extremes will, that’s my opinion,” Ty explained. Through the years the percent of fullblood, purebred, LimFlex, and commercial cattle have fluctuated. Though the first Limousin at the farm were red, now the herd is mostly black. Currently, the herd reflects 10 percent fullbloods, 30 to 40 percent purebreds, and close to 50 percent LimFlex. Pinegar Limousin operates with the motto of utilizing common sense and planned genetics to give customers the most predictable product possible.

ELITE GENETICS Pinegar Limousin’s herd exhibits decades of genetic progress. The reliance on proven cow families the farm has either raised or selected, has created a foundation of elite Limousin genetics. Annually, Pinegar Limousin flushes at least 10 of its

donor cows. The embryo transfer work opens the door for the next generation of foundation dams and sires. “It allows you to take a cow that you really like and allows you to try different bulls on her to see what that offspring is like. What she is or isn’t going to do for you or what that bull did or didn’t do for you,” Ty explained. Additionally, Pinegar Limousin uses IVF and reverse sorts the semen for a female. These matings are created with the hopes of future show heifer prospects.

SUCCESS ON THE SHOW CIRCUIT The AUTO prefix can be found in champion bulls and females at shows throughout the country. Pinegar Limousin and its customers have garnered much success in the show ring. Pinegar Limousin’s awards are many, including championships

at national shows. Most recently, AUTO How It’s Done, was selected as 2021 Cattlemen’s Congress Grand Champion Limousin Bull. Though Pinegar Limousin appreciates the grand champion wins, it’s other awards that carry the most meaning. “Premier exhibitor and premier breeder are the ones I hold nearer and dearer, because that represents what you did that week at that show and for the last two years in your program,” Ty shared.

COMMERCIAL HERD The operation’s Limousin-influenced commercial herd includes a large number of heifers. Pinegar Limousin either raises the commercial heifers or buys them from its bull customers. “We have never bought a lot of commercial cows. But we have bought a lot of commercial heifers, because that is what Ed always wanted to do,” Ty said. He wanted to improve the longevity of his investment. Pinegar Limousin breeds its commercial heifers via AI. “You need to AI them, in my opinion, to calve them, because you need to stay really focused for short periods of time,” Ty stated. By breeding the heifers AI, it shortens the calving window to 10 days with a few stragglers on either side. If a herd bull is used, the calving window stretches to 21 to 28 days, and possibly another month after that. The abbreviated calving period, due to AI breeding, makes it easier to check the heifers every three to four hours without getting burned out.

above Ty Heavin, Pinegar Limousin Farm Manager. 18

Another benefit of a shortened calving window, is the calves are similar in size due to their close birthdates. This is beneficial when feeding and growing them out. In addition, when they are yearlings and ready to be sold, they can sell as a complete set. “On yearling day when you run them all across the scales and they don’t sort anything off, or maybe only sort one off, you have a March 2022 | THE STOCKMAN

load. That buyer can check that box – he bought a load,” Ty said.

IMPROVEMENTS TO THE BREED Though Pinegar Limousin holds its identity and foundation close, it remains flexible to meet the demands of its customers and the cattle market. “I think the breed has done a pretty decent job of modernizing itself to fit today’s meat market and also fit the momma cow market,” Ty commented. Pinegar Limousin joined the breed’s efforts to highlight Limousin’s lean meat and stayability, while working to improve marbling, depth of body, calving ease, and docility.

HERD BUILDER SALE Some of the best genetics in the Limousin business have made their way through the sale ring at Pine-

gar Limousin. The females and herd sires have gone on to be production champions for their new owners. Pinegar Limousin will hold its 28th annual Herd Builder sale on March 19, 2022 at the farm near Springfield, Mo. This year, Pinegar Limousin has dug deeper than ever before and is letting go of some of the genetics that are at the heart of its program. The sale will feature spring bred heifers, fall bred heifers, fall pairs, December and January pairs, and Road to Amarillo show heifer prospects.

ED PINEGAR’S LIMOUSIN LEGACY Whether he was running his businesses, spending time with family, or making decisions at the farm; Ed poured his heart and soul into it. “He was very passionate about whatever he was doing,” Ty reflected.

Ed Pinegar spent decades promoting the Limousin breed. He loved cattle and the people in the cattle industry. He was especially compelled to help and encourage juniors and their families. He started an offer at his sales more than ten years ago, that remains today. If a junior purchases a show animal from Pinegar Limousin, the farm pays its entry fee for junior nationals and picks up the week-long hotel bill for the youth and their family. Though the captain of Pinegar Limousin is no longer at the helm, his philosophies still guide the ship. The course has been set and Pinegar Limousin plans to continue operations in a way that honors Ed’s legacy. Pinegar Limousin moves into the future with one of the leading Limousin herds in North America and with the passion of its founder.

THE VALUE OF HAY AS FERTILIZER T

his time of year, many producers are feeding cows hay. Have you ever stopped to think about what the dollar value of the nutrients in the hay are worth as fertilizer once they have been processed by the cow? Mature cows at maintenance should excrete 100% of the nutrients they consume in terms of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. For example, 100 cows are being fed 30 lbs. per head per day of 17% protein alfalfa hay that is .3% phosphorus and 2.4% potassium on an as fed basis. What is the value of the nutrients available to the pasture or field where the manure is being deposited? 3000 lbs. of alfalfa hay X .17 crude protein = 510 lbs. of protein. Nitrogen X 6.25 = crude protein. By

taking 510 lbs. of crude protein and dividing by 6.25 = 81.6 pounds of nitrogen in the fed hay. Only about 35% of the nitrogen in manure and urine is available to be used. The balance is lost to volatilization as ammonia. Using 81.6 pounds of nitrogen X .35 = 28.6 pounds of nitrogen available to be used by growing plants from the fed alfalfa hay. The availability for phosphorus and potassium in manure and urine from feed consumed is 100%. To find the value of phosphorus and potassium in the fed alfalfa take 3000 lbs. X .003 = 9 lbs. of phosphorus and 3000 lbs. x .024 = 72 lbs. of potassium. In one ton of alfalfa hay, there are approximately 19 lbs. of nitrogen

If hay is being fed, is there an opportunity to feed cattle on ground where the nutrients can be utilized for growing tame perennial or annual forages that would respond to the fertilizer? Photo credit Troy Walz.

(N), 6 lbs. of phosphorus (P), 48 lbs. of potassium (K) and 6 lbs. of sulfur (S) that are applied to the ground in excreted manure where the hay is fed. The fertilizer nutrient value of these minerals at current market prices is $1.00/lb of N ($19.00), $0.95/lb of P ($5.70), $0.65/lb of K ($31.20) and $0.75/lb of S ($3.75), which would in total equal $59.65 per ton! This value doesn’t include other micronutrients and the organic matter in manure and wasted hay. It is common to see weed problems develop on rangeland that cattle are fed on during the winter months. The nutrients from the hay are often concentrated in feed areas and the availability of nitrogen, in particular, in rangeland situations encourages weed growth. If hay is being fed, is there an opportunity to feed cattle on ground where the nutrients can be utilized for growing tame perennial or annual forages that would respond to the fertilizer? Nutrients in hay have value. Finding ways to effectively utilize and recycle nutrients is economically beneficial. Strategically thinking about how to capture the value of nutrients in harvested forage is one way to reduce fertilizer prices for growing crops. Courtesy University of NE - Lincoln, UNL Beef

For more information on calculating the nutrient value of harvested feeds, visit this University of Missouri Extension article titled “Calculating Fertilizer Value of Supplemental Feed for Cattle on Pasture”. 26

Don Abarr makes northern Minnesota home.

W hen thinking about the location for a true a cowboy cattle ranch, the state of Minnesota probably doesn’t come to mind. Yet, with its forests in the north, prairies in the south and bounty of lakes, Wilde Angus Ranch has made its home in northern Minnesota for more than 30 years. “I think the thing I am most proud of besides the great cow

40

herd, is when people come to visit, they don’t expect to see a working ranch,” Don Abarr, current owner of Wilde Angus Ranch shared. “I’m not sure what they expect, but several of them have said, ‘I had no idea this existed in Minnesota. You might be as western as the ranches out West.’”

WILDE ANGUS RANCH’S BEGINNINGS In the 1980s, Wayne and Deb Wilde founded Wilde Angus Ranch in Shevlin, Minn. A few years ago, in 2019, Don Abarr and his family bought the ranch. Currently, Wayne and Deb have leased the cow herd to Don, who plans to purchase the

cows over the next three years. The Wildes started their Angus operation in order to bring modern genetics to their neighbors to improve their cow herds. Wayne had a shrewd eye for quality, and he brought some exceptional cows to the ranch early in the history of Wilde Angus Ranch. Many were the foundation for the cows currently at the ranch including, GDAR Forever Lady 98, 9084 and 4070. Those foundation cows raised Angus Pathfinders and herd sires for the Wildes and their customers. Both 9084 and 4070 are from the Modelmere cow family.

DON ABARR’S AG BACKGROUND Don grew up on a large commercial cattle ranch in Wyoming and moved to Minnesota in 2007. In 2012, he started his own registered Angus farm southeast of Fargo, N.D. He had become acquainted with Wayne through various sales, and at one particular bull sale, Wayne invited Don to his production sale. When Don first visited Wilde Angus Ranch, he was blown away by the way Wayne raised his cattle and was impressed to see the ranching

traditions used in northern Minnesota. He appreciated that Wayne and Deb used horses for everyday work. “It was as close to Wyoming as I could get in the middle of Minnesota,” Don explained.

THE FOCUS The focus of Wilde Angus is to continue to produce cattle that work for the cattleman. The majority of the momma cows all come from herd bulls at the ranch. In the past, Wayne has done a great job of purchasing bulls, while Don’s focus has been on producing and retaining high-quality females. Wilde Angus Ranch’s target customers are people who want to add performance ranch cattle to their operation and who appreciate animals for their hardiness, maternal instinct, and ability to adjust to any environment. No fads, trends, or single attributes are chased; rather, Wilde Angus cattle are bred to be balanced, functional cattle. They have to be able to thrive in the wild temperature swings and weather conditions in northern Minnesota. Last year brought one of the worst droughts in recorded history. While 41

January 2022, showed most days with subzero wind chills accompanied by two feet of snow. If the cattle can remain productive in those circumstances, then they should be able to excel in all climates and environments.

QUARTER HORSES The ranch is also home to a few dozen ranch-bred Quarter Horses. Several brood- mares by Playin in the Pudding, a Freckles Playboy son, and Smart Little Lena are bred each year. The colts have ground work started at 2 years old, all are started under saddle at 3 years old, and are exposed to every aspect of working cattle: roping, cutting, moving, dragging calves on sleds, and checking cows at night. Some are occasionally available via private treaty. This year’s bull and female sale will also feature four 3-year-olds that have been started two fillies and two geldings.

CUSTOMER SERVICE IS KEY Customer connection and service after the sale are paramount to the crew at Wilde Angus Ranch.

They enjoy answering their customers’ questions, helping solve their problems, and offering advice and encouragement. Customer visits are also a favorite pastime. Don enjoys talking cattle with seasoned cattlemen and learning from their experiences. Many customers have become long-time friends, and activities outside cattle are shared between them. “We don’t want to just be a seller, and by that, I mean when we hear of opportunities or things that impact people’s operations, we share what we know. That’s what makes many of the relationships we have special - many of our customers are also our friends,” Don said.

FAMILY INVOLVEMENT When Don and his family bought the ranch, many of the people who made the ranch successful were willing to remain to see the succession of ownership. A large crew keeps Wilde Angus Ranch running, especially during the busiest times of the year. Don’s son, Graham, attends college at University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and is studying commercial aviation. He comes home when he can to lend a hand, when he isn’t flying. Graham’s sister, Madison, graduated from Minnesota State University at Moorhead in elementary education and currently teaches first grade. Don’s wife, Jaye, owns and operates an occasional boutique, Cottonwood Designs, in Barnesville, Minn. The Wilde family has remained a part of the operation. Wayne has been a big help to the Abarrs and absolutely loves to ride. Wayne is a constant fixture on cattle project days and often arrives early. Wayne and Deb’s son, Matt, grows the feed for the cattle. He ensures it is top quality, and Don buys the feed from Matt along with a few other sources. Matt’s sister, Patches, helps produce the sale catalog and assists with the cattle paperwork. “It is

42

definitely a collective effort,” Don said.

UTILIZING TECHNOLOGY The American Angus Association provides many tools for cattle producers, and Wilde Angus Ranch uses many of them. Record keeping and genetic testing are used extensively to track information. Although Don admits he is not the most tech-savvy cattleman, the next generation has proven helpful with the computer applications. A drone will be utilized to locate cattle in clumps of trees, creek beds, and remote parts of the ranch. Many of the younger cows are bred via AI, and some of the proven, older cows are flushed to extend their influence over the cow herd and produce exceptional bulls. The cow herd is bred for a 65-day calving season starting March 1. The entire herd is tested annually for Johnes disease, leukosis, and Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD).

THE FUTURE Like many industries, attracting and keeping experienced, engaged March 2022 | THE STOCKMAN

employees is a potential challenge in the coming years. Finding people who enjoy working in extreme weather conditions and performing physically demanding labor is difficult. “This is the most rewarding job I have had because you get to see accomplishment and progress every day. Great results don’t come as a result of little effort,” Don said. The Abarrs say they believe the future is bright for people in the cattle business. “The industry is rewarding quality and it looks as if over the next few years, the commercial producers will get rewarded for it,” Don added. “It’s about time all the hard work our customers put in pays off and profitability improves for them.”

THE RANCHING WAY The crew at Wilde Angus Ranch truly embody the ranching way. Horses and dogs are used to check and move cattle. The cows calve in

the trees and snow banks. “What started as a small family operation 30 years ago, has grown to one of the largest Angus seedstock producers in Minnesota,” Don said.

crop,” Don said. The ranch is positioned to thrive in the coming years with an excellent set of young momma cows. These cows are expected to make a positive impact on Wilde Angus’ herd and those of their customers.

MARCH PRODUCTION SALE

They have already started to make a mark and have produced a very even set of bulls each of the past three years. “Our 2022 offering may be the most consistent yet, and I really appreciate this set of calves,” Don said.

Wilde Angus Ranch’s 27th annual sale will be held at the ranch outside Shevlin, Minn., on Saturday, March 5, 2022. The sale will feature over 130 yearling bulls; more than 20 registered, bred females; 20 registered, open females; plus 125 commercial, bred females.

Cattle have been sold to customers in nine states through previous production sales. Many lasting friendships have bloomed as a result of the sales, and customers are always welcome at the ranch. “The coffee is always on and people can come view the cattle at any time prior to the sale. We may have to ride around a bit to find a particular one, but you’ll get to see more of the ranch that way,” Don stated.

Some of the leading sires in the industry will be represented in the pedigrees. This year’s sale includes bulls sired by SAV America 8018 and Growth Fund, grandsons of No Doubt. In addition, the sale will feature the first calves from the high-selling bull from two years ago, Wilde’s Bomber 3137. “We are super excited about his prospects and certainly like his first calf

Seeds in Season

Functional forage and pasture.

contributed article by Justin Fruechte, Forage & Cover Crop Specialist Millborn Seeds, Brookings, S.D. millbornseeds.com

DEVELOPING THAT “HARD GRASS” PASTURE SYSTEM One

common benefit that cattle producers saw from the 2021 drought was heavier calves at weaning. It may not seem possible, but seasoned cattleman grazing pastures dominated by cool season grasses, will attest to calves doing better when there isn’t excess rain. The lack of rain slows the growth of the cool season grasses and prevents new flushes of vegetative grass. The shortened growth of the grass can sometimes mean higher quality, but it also means higher dry matter values. With less water in the plants the cattle can eat less to achieve their nutritional requirements and maintain the correct

rumen flow to properly digest the forage. Since we all pray for rain and want grasses that are high yielding and great for grazing, let’s understand how that is achieved. Native range contains the grasses that folks refer to as good “hard grass.” A native range is comprised of plants that are indigenous to that location and haven’t been altered since Mother Nature put them there. This is the grass ecosystem that bison and all wildlife thrived on for thousands of years and a system that supports beef cattle very well. In modern agriculture, humans have made advancements that have

surpassed many production goals. But, the one system that continues to thrive with less human involvement is the native prairie ecosystem. So, how do we best mimic this ecosystem to achieve the production goals we put in place through management? The first goal we need to focus on is species diversity. A thriving plant community should consist of warm and cool season native grasses, forbs, and legumes. Together, these plants

grow symbiotically to ensure year-round growth to form a resilient system independent of humans interacting with herbicides and fertilizer. If you’re dreaming of running cows in that environment, let’s look at starting from a blank slate. It gets a bit overwhelming to see the endless list of options that may be good for your native pasture. Understanding your soil types within your climate will be the quickest way to start to sort your options, but I’ll give you a generic THE STOCKMAN | March 2022

listing of species that we see work best in most plantings in the Midwest. The best native warm season grasses for livestock production are Big Bluestem, Sideoats Grama, Blue Grama, Buffalograss, Indiangrass, and Switchgrass. The best cool season native grasses for grazing are Western Wheatgrass, Green Needlegrass, and Slender Wheatgrass. These would all be great choices for upland plantings to provide the desired good grazing from hard grasses. My favorite native forbs to start a grazing plan with would be Purple Prairie Clover, Lead Plant, Canada Milkvetch, White Prairie Clover, Western Yarrow, and American Vetch. Establishment of these native plants takes time and patience. They’ll last forever when managed correctly, but they will usually require two years to fully establish before use. Late spring is a great time to start planting, and like all grass seeds they prefer to be seeded shallow into a firm seed bed.

During that first year of establishment, it may require clipping/ mowing to keep annual weeds at bay. Though management in the first few years may be higher, your long-term benefits will outweigh that limited production. If you are desiring a fully regenerative system to insert your cattle into, a diverse native range ecosystem is your answer. riving through the middle of Kansas, one’s eye may catch a glimpse of B&D Herefords and Angus. The cattle operation spans the course of approximately 18-square miles. The ranch’s Herefords, Angus, and F1 black baldies pop on the Kansas landscape, particularly during this time of year.

62

B&D Herefords and Angus started in 1969 with a group of 40 registered Herefords. Gerald Beran and his brother-in-law Vince Dolechek, combined their cattle to get the business started. What began as a small farm has grown into a massive cattle operation.

BROTHERS RUN THE RANCH Gerald’s sons Craig, Gerald Jr., Kevin, and Terry Beran own and operate the ranch now. The third generation of Berans also contribute to the operations at the ranch. Some might wonder if it is tricky for four brothers to manage the operation in harmony.

March 2022 | THE STOCKMAN

After years of growing up, working, and living life together; they have it figured out. “The operation is big and that helps because we are busy enough we don’t have time to be worrying about small stuff too much,” Craig Beran shared.

HERD DIVERSITY Currently, B&D Herefords and Angus manages 800 momma cows on 12,000 acres spread out through Claflin, Kan. The original herd, put together 55 years ago, were all registered Herefords. Thirty years ago, the families decided to add registered Angus to the operation. “They complement each other so well we thought it was the right thing to do,” Craig explained. “It was presented to us by a neighbor who had an Angus herd and it has worked out well.”

The cattle herds are managed in three different yet complementary ways. The Berans maintain 300 registered Hereford momma cows, 300 registered Angus momma cows, and 100 commercial cows. The commercial herd is composed of cows that have been moved out of one of the registered herds due to performance or age. The ranch’s Hereford genetics largely feature Line 1 bloodlines from Holden Herefords and Cooper Herefords. The Angus genetics stem from Schaff Angus Valley and Sitz Angus bloodlines. The Berans choose to utilize Line 1 genetics in their Hereford herd. They state the Line 1 genetics bring consistency to their breeding practices and adds performance to their genetic lines.

PRODUCING F1 GENETICS The Hereford cows in the commercial herd are crossed with Angus bulls and the Angus cows in the commercial herd are crossed with Hereford bulls. The result is F1 calves, typically black baldies. “You get the good from both breeds. They are some of the best females I have ever seen,” Craig said. The Beran brothers grow out the heifer calves, breed them to Angus bulls, calve them out, and sell the pairs at one of their production sales. All the F1 bull calves are steered and sold. “When you hang the steers on the rail they very rarely miss Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) or Certified Angus Beef (CAB) qualifying. They pretty much all qualify for it, so the end product works really great that way too on those,” Craig added. The Berans appreciate the maternal characteristics of the F1 firstcalf heifers. “I don’t know the last time we have pulled a calf on a F1 heifer,” Craig stated. The Berans attribute part of the F1s’ calving ease success to the philosophy of using bulls they have raised through line breeding and comprehensive evaluation.

_______

Additionally, the natural maternal soundness of the F1 first-calf heifers positions them for fewer calving issues. “They have a bigger pelvic area as a rule, and they can have a bigger calf if need be. If the bull that you use isn’t quite what you thought it would be, they can still have it,” Craig said.

REGISTERED HERDS In its beginnings, registered cattle were added to B&D Herefords and Angus with the intention of raising females for the commercial herd. That original plan of 25 registered cows snowballed through the decades to 600 registered cows, split between the Hereford and Angus breeds. 64

March 2022 | THE STOCKMAN

Many of the registered females are bred via AI to ensure they are producing elite genetics. The Hereford females are bred via AI less than the Angus females. The ranch utilizes its battery of herd sires for many of the Hereford females. “We buy bulls from the right place and keep bulls that we are able to raise. After more than 50 years, we feel the ones we are able to raise are definitely good enough to work in any herd. So, we don’t feel that we need to AI all of them,” Craig explained. The heifer calves born in the registered herds are typically retained for replacements. The top bull calves are raised and sold at one of the ranch’s production sales. B&D Herefords and Angus works to provide its customers with high-quality herd sires for their operations. The bulls are all sold at 18 months of age.

COMMITMENT TO GENETIC ADVANCEMENT The ranch has set a goal to DNA test its entire cow herd over the next few years. Additionally, the Berans plan to run 50K genomics tests on many of their bulls. The brothers are taking on this task to ensure their customers have the most accurate genetic information possible. “We felt the more it is done, the more accurate it will be,” Craig stated. “And customers can rely on the EPDs that we are presenting them more than without it. We thought it gave it some validity.” Each year the Berans implant around 80 embryos. They use embryo transplant (ET) in the hopes of getting females with excellent genetics for raising bulls in the future. The ET work also allows the ranch to produce more calves from its top-producing cows.

PRODUCTION SALES The ranch holds two production sales each year. The Season Opener in March and the Fall Classic in November. The sale names reflect the family’s love and connection to baseball. Gerald Beran and his brothers played semi-pro baseball. “We grew up bleeding baseball, so that is where that came from,” Craig chuckled. The Season Opener is going on its 36th anniversary. This year’s sale, on March 22, 2022, will feature 50 Hereford bulls, 60 Angus bulls, and several cow/calf pair lots.

DEDICATED TO LONGEVITY The Beran brothers attribute much of their success to their dedication to their customers, the cattle industry, and to their family business. “It’s a family operation and the third generation is back. We are going to be here. We have been raising registered cattle over 50 years and we have no intention of dispersing,” Craig concluded. learn more bdherefords.com

FETAL PROGRAMMING AND INSIGHTS INTO EPIGENOMICS W

hat is fetal programming? The last several years I’ve given a lot of thought to this subject. I think most of us who raise cattle give a fair amount of thought to this subject whether we realize it or not. In a nutshell, it is giving the developing fetus everything it needs to become the best version it can be, given the genes it possesses. Most fetal programming information focuses on nutrition given to the cow at the time of gestation. If the nutrition to the pregnant cow is right, the results are a calf that will have optimal performance, carcass traits, fertility, and longevity. Fetal programming is part of a larger concept called epigenomics. The concept of epigenomics came about after the genome was mapped out. At that time there were many things with genetics that

70

could not be explained by the genes alone. The answer to these unexplained issues was epigenomics.

The main points I try to consider when thinking about epigenomics are as follows:

Epigenomics are the switches that turn genes on and off. The concept of epigenomics adds a whole other layer of complexity to genetics.

1) If using the 80:20 rule, I would consider nutrition to have 80 percent of the influence over epigenomics. This means having high-quality protein available in the ration along with energy to provide maintenance and growth. Having the proper levels of vitamins and minerals available in their diet to keep the animals’ immunity and metabolism at optimal levels. I really emphasize vitamin A and trace minerals such as copper, zinc, and selenium in the bovine diet for optimum health and to positively influence epigenomics.

To make it simple, things in the environment that are positive will affect epigenomics in a positive way, such as good nutrition, a clean environment, freedom from disease, exercise, and lack of stress. The result is that more good genes will be turned on and detrimental genes will be suppressed. On the other hand, animals that are subjected to poor nutrition, disease, poor sanitation, toxins, and stress probably will have their epigenome affected in a negative way. The result would be the suppression of good genes.

2) Epigenomics will probably be influenced the most at a young age and less as the animal grows older. This is where the concept of fetal programming comes into play. By targeting the developing fetus, we can provide the optimal nutrition to the fetus through the cow’s diet. This results in calves that will go on to be better replacement heifers with higher fertility and increased longevity in the herd.

March 2022 | THE STOCKMAN

3) Epigenomics can be passed down to the next generation or more. If an animal’s epigenomics are affected in a negative way, they probably are not good candidates for herd replacements. If a heifer is stunted from poor nutrition or sickness, her epigenomics will probably be affected in a negative way and these negative epigenomics can be passed down for one or two generations before they are corrected by good environmental influences. If we have the most influ4) ence on epigenomics at a young age, there is really no good time to just get by on nutrition on a gestating cow. Every day counts for the developing fetus to give it the best chance to express its genetic potential. 5) When we talk about a trait being 65 percent heritable, such as muscle and skeletal design, this

THE STOCKMAN | March 2022

means the actual genes have 65 percent of the influence over a trait. The other 35 percent of the trait comes from the environmental influences and epigenomics plays a role in this 35 percent. So, a trait that is 10 percent heritable, such as reproduction, has more opportunity to be influenced by environment and epigenomic factors. 6) A herd that has had longterm issues with poor nutrition or disease, is probably going to take time to correct negative epigenomic issues. Some of these issues can be corrected with better nutrition and disease control, but may take several years to make a difference. Also, producers may need to add a higher percentage of replacement females to the herd each year that had the benefits of better nutrition and improved epigenomics.

7) Exercise positively influences epigenomics. Cows that are running out on stalk fields or pasture always look better and fresher than cows that are left in lots. Epigenomics explain why some animals reach their genetic potential better than others. It’s why your mother tells you to eat your vegetables and get enough sleep. Basically, any nutrition or husbandry practices that make the cattle look or do better are probably contributing to enhanced epigenomics. The earlier you target an animal, the greater the long-term impact we can make and obtain the best returns on our genetic investments. learn more collisonembryo.com Dr. Vince Collison is co-owner of Collison Embryo | Collison Veterinary Services PAC in Rockwell City, Iowa.

Calving Ease Sire • Intervention was the top-selling bull in the 2018 ZWT Production Sale going to Reisig Cattle, Buford Ranches, Upchurch Angus, Upchurch Brothers, and Pat Southworth. • He is an attractive outlined bull with a square hip and chiseled front that passes on ‘the look’ to his offspring. He sired the top two performing bulls in the 2019 fall-born calf crop at ZWT. • His dam is the world-renowned Final Answer daughter, EA Rose 918, making him a maternal brother to ZWT Infusion F182. • Intervention saw heavy natural service at ZWT in the summer of 2021 and we are excited about the number of calves we will have in 2022. Reports from several of the partners have been very promising. • Use this bull to sire a very distinct look backed by a tremendous cow family! Where did you learn to cook?

I learned cooking basics in 4-H and from my mother, and by the seat of my pants since then! I learned a lot just watching other ranch wives and good cooks and “borrowing” recipes from them. I like to try new recipes occasionally and if they aren’t received well, we go onto the next one. I’m very fortunate to have a daughter and daughter-in-law who are excellent cooks. A lot of our big ranch meals or holiday meals are a collaboration by the three of us.

What is your favorite thing to make?

Definitely my favorite thing to make is a grilled home-raised Certified Angus Beef rib steak. I like to use a seasoning on the steak and let it sit for a half hour or so, before putting it on the grill or broiler pan. My favorite seasoning is Jim Baldridge’s Secret Seasoning which I’ve used for years. It’s about impossible to screw up a good steak (unless you overcook it) and with a potato and a salad, you look like a star in the kitchen!

What is your favorite cooking tip/trick?

I’m a firm believer in the KISS method, keep it simple…. silly! I don’t like recipes that require a lot of ingredients or a lot of time to prepare.

Myself along with my son, Adam, his wife Jenessa, and daughter Jessica own and continue to operate A&B Cattle and actively manage the day-to-day activities at the ranch. My husband Arlen and I, established A&B Cattle in 1990, with a foundation herd of cows developed from the original Sawyer family herd in South Dakota and other females produced during Arlen’s career in the cattle industry. Through the years, Arlen made a positive on the mark on the Angus breed with his innovative on-theranch embryo transplant work, creation of the Profitmaker bull program, service as a board member for the American Angus Association, Angus Genetics, Inc., and Angus Foundation, Inc. In addition, he judged many regional and national cattle shows. Arlen passed away on September 10, 2019. Few changes have been made in the cow herd management and the conditioning of bulls for the annual bull sale. We continue to run both a spring calving and fall calving herd of registered Angus cows, totaling over 800 momma cows. March 2022 | THE STOCKMAN

Annual Bull Sale: April 7, 2022 - at the ranch near Bassett, Neb. Selling 150 yearling and fall coming two-year-old bulls; plus, new this year 10 elite Angus heifers and another 40 front end commercial Angus heifers.

JUDY’S ROAST BEEF Becky Sawyer

3 to 5 lb. beef roast, thawed and 1 pkg. dry Italian dressing mix 1 can beef broth best at room temperature 1 pkg. Au Jus dry mix Whisk Au Jus mix, Italian dressing mix and beef broth together and pour evenly over the roast in a Crockpot. Set the Crockpot on low and cook for 6 to 8 hours.

CROCKPOT PIZZA Becky Sawyer

1 – 12 oz. pkg. wide egg noodles 1 ½ lbs. ground beef ¼ c. chopped onion 1 – 28 oz. jar spaghetti sauce 1 – 4 ½ oz. can sliced mushrooms, drained (optional) 1 ½ tsp. Italian seasoning 1 – 3 ½ oz. pkg. sliced pepperoni, slice halves 3 c. shredded mozzarella cheese 3 c. shredded cheddar cheese Cook noodles according to package directions. Cook beef and onions until beef is no longer pink. Drain. Stir in spaghetti sauce, mushrooms and Italian season. Drain noodles. Spread 1/3 of the meat mixture in a 5 qt. slow cooker coated with non-stick cooking spray or a Crockpot liner. Cover with 1/3 of noodles and then pepperoni. Sprinkle with 1/3 of the cheeses. Repeat layers twice. Cover and cook 3 to 4 hours on low or until heated through and cheese is melted. This is a recipe that I tried one day and it immediately became a big hit especially among the younger crowd that had just come in from branding. It’s been a keeper recipe since then!

This is an easy roast beef recipe that is always good. I’m a fan of Crockpots, especially on busy days when we all have to be out helping work cattle. This recipe came from a good friend, a busy ranch wife who also worked in town. You can take the liquid with the roast and make an awesome gravy or I usually put plenty of potatoes, carrots, celery and onions in the pot with the roast, so we have a complete meal ready when we come in to eat.

Cows are managed very much like other Sandhills operations with cows grazing native grass pastures without supplementation and wintering on nearby cornstalks. The operation has an aggressive AI program and starts calving in late January with spring calvers and mid-August with fall calvers. We maintain a stringent culling program with all cows based on the weaning performance of each calf. We also have a rigid culling program with the bulls, retaining ownership on steer calves that are fed out locally with carcass information identified on each individual. The guarantee on all bulls sold, either privately or through the sale, remains the same as established by Arlen. A customer’s success is of utmost importance to our family. Few changes have been made in the operation since 2019, our desire continues to do better every day with customer service, nutrition and genetic progress.

In the News GRAY’S ANGUS RANCH NAMED 2021 NEBRASKA ANGUS PRODUCER OF THE YEAR Gray’s Angus Ranch of Harrison is the 2021 Nebraska Angus Producer of the Year. Raising registered Angus is a family tradition for the Gray’s. Rod’s great-great grandfather, Starr Fuller, had American Aberdeen Angus registries from Toledo, Iowa, dating 1898. Harry Gray, Rod’s grandpa purchased Angus cows from his wife’s father, Art Fuller, and held public auctions of “Richly Bred Angus Cattle” in the 1940’s. Wayne Gray, Rod’s dad, built the Angus cow herd to 400 registered females and sold bulls private treaty. At the age of 15, Rod purchased his first bull from the “Champion Pen of 3” at Denver, a son of Ankonian President. He grew up active in the Iowa Junior Angus Association, serving as president. He showed the family’s own Angus breeding stock in 4-H, progress shows, state fair, and at the National Western Stock Show. Rod and Laura moved to Nebraska in 1983 and have raised their family in the Angus business. Their children were active in the Nebraska Junior Angus Association. Their daughter, Naomi, was Nebraska Angus Queen and finalist for Miss American Angus. They showed at AKSARBEN, junior nationals, progress shows, and at 4-H events. Rod served on the NAA Directors and was 1993 President. He served on the NE Beef Check-Off Board for eight years and traveled to Central and South America with U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). In 1997, the family moved west to the Wyoming border southwest of Harrison. They hosted the Nebraska Junior Angus Show at Ft. Robinson, as well as a couple Nebraska 88

Angus Tours. They have exhibited at Husker Harvest Days and at the Nebraska and Wyoming state Fairs, the NILE, Denver, WJLS, and BHSS. Today, living on the ranch and doing daily management are sons, Heath and Garret, along with Rod and Laura. The ranch has pivots for raising alfalfa and corn silage for winter feed. At an altitude of 4600 to 5000 feet, the growing season is about 90 days. Colt and Riyatta, along with daughter Keirra, are close by on Wyoming property and regularly help out. Levi, Sarah and kids, Cooper and Kendall, take in Gray’s pairs for the summer on their ground in White River Country. Naomi and Jeff Pelster and their family, Chisum, Ruger, Linnea, Canton, and Kimberlynn ranch north of Harrison on Coffee War Bonnet Ranch. They have Gray’s Angus bloodlines in their cow herd and have a yearling operation. Grandpa Rod has started the seventh generation showing Angus breeding stock and Chisum had champion Angus bull at the WJLS in Rapid City this fall. They all take this Angus cattle business seriously and help out big time with the spring bull sale, branding, and ranch work. This time of year, the Grays are sorting through the 400-plus bull calves, picking out the top third to keep for sale as bulls. Careful selection for a “complete package” including dam production, performance, profitable EPDs, and soundness being closely monitored. Later born calves are held over for buyers wanting twoyear-old bulls. The bulls are developed at the ranch on a sensible, low concentrate diet with ample room to exercise. Heifer calves are also wintered at the ranch, synchronized and bred via AI before trailing to grass for

the summer. Calving usually starts the first of February with AI and ET calves. All the pairs leave the main ranch for the growing season. They have several environments for the herd and the cows get a variety of challenges from year to year. At White River and Deep Creek, south of Crawford, the terrain has very steep ravines and is covered with pine trees. Up at Provo, S.D., the pairs face sparse water, treeless and drought susceptible gumbo. Sioux County hard grass is great, also drought susceptible, a high plains, shortgrass prairie. With hardy Angus bloodlines tracing back to the original Gray cow herd, these females have been tried and proven to perform in various range conditions and terrains. The cows go to work, take care of themselves and their calves and rebreed to do it all over again next year. The steers are fed in a feedlot and consistently finish with an ADG over 4.5 pounds per day, carcasses grade 95 percent choice and higher, 57 percent CAB, and Prime. The Grays are all about providing good, quality beef for consumers and profitability for their customers. They will be hosting their 27th annual, 2nd Century Performance Bull Sale at the ranch the 3rd Saturday in March. The family has all been a big part of the success of the operation, from their ancestors and extended family to the kids and grandkids who are actively involved now. They are also very thankful to God for His blessings and favor. submitted by Gray’s Angus Ranch

STOCKMAN

traight About the Stockman. I started raising Holstein calves when I was 12 years old and did that until I was 18 years old, at which time I purchased 12 registered Hereford cows. I built my herd up to 100 crossbred cows and owned a drywall business until 1980. The banker then convinced me to sell my farm, my beef cows and start milking cows. It took five years to figure out that there was no future for me in being a dairy farmer. I took a couple of years off from livestock and realized I did not like living in town. So, I started back up in the beef business by buying four registered Angus cows from Van Dyke Angus in 1989. I was hooked. Now we run 200 cows, mostly calving in July and August, with about 25 calving in late January. We do this so the grandkids have some show calves and we use the balance as recips. Our son Matt works for us part time and our two daughters help out as much as they can. Some day we hope to have some grandkids helping too!”

96

Which animal (any species) has left the greatest impact on you? Big Rok Polly 858 is probably the best cow that most people have never heard of. At least one-third of our herd will trace back to her as she lived to be 15 years old and flushed very well. She would be a great cow even today.”

The most important lesson you’ve learned in this business? Find one or two older, successful ranchers and listen to everything they say. If you are smart enough to do that maybe you can limit some of the mistakes they made. You cannot learn experience.”

What about the beef cattle industry excites you the most? Easy, seeing the next calf crop born and then develop into cows that are better than their mother.”

A conversation with everyday Stockmen,

Kevin and Denise Olson Big Rok Angus - Detroit Lakes, Minn.

Most used tool on your farm and how old is it? Describe your best or worst day. The best day on a ranch is when everything is going well during calving and the worst can be when everything is going wrong during calving. There is nothing worse than seeing all of your hard work lying there dead next to your best cow.”

There are two items that we use almost every day and I wouldn’t raise cattle without either one of them. We have a 2-yearold New Holland skid steer and a 15-year-old Ranger. We also have 4-wheelers, but the Ranger is used more than both of them combined.”

What is your least favorite job on the farm?

Your favorite non-farm activity to do in your free time?

I would have to say it’s getting ready for our annual sale; it’s a lot of work for about two hours.”

We love being at the lake with the whole family in the summer and in the gym watching games in the winter.”
