Sit back, relax, and enjoy our special 50th release of Student Pocket Guide including loads of discounts, free competitions, exclusive interviews, throwbacks, tips and advice…

From taking the stage accepting awards to being invited as VIPs to major festivals such as Global Gathering and Creamfields, it’s been an incredible journey. We’ve met and spoken to some of the world’s biggest names including Ed Sheeran, KSI, Calvin Harris, and Gorillaz. We’re extremely proud and privileged to remain a platform that represents and supports UK students.

Just like that we’ve turned 17 years old and are releasing our 50th issue of Student Pocket Guide! Back in 2005 when we launched issue 1 we were a Norwich only magazine handed to students at UEA, Norwich City College, and Norwich School of Art and Design. We connected students from different campuses and introduced them to local businesses. The idea was a huge success; we grew quickly, won multiple awards and expanded across the UK until we became a truly national magazine brand publishing in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

As a 50th issue special we’ve featured some of the most compelling throw-back interviews with the likes of Raphael Rowe, Sue Aikens, Levison Wood, and Juan Pablo Escobar (Pablo Escobar’s son). Combining the past with the present and keeping things fresh, we also caught up with the incredibly talented Yung Filly who’s been busy making new music, Beabadoobee who embarks on a new UK tour, DJ and producer Nathan Dawe, as well as legendary Kyu C. Lee, a 10-year studio veteran from Sony Pictures Entertainment who oversaw Hollywood blockbusters including Spider-Man, Casino Royale, and The Da Vinci Code!

Studying, exams, and 9am lectures are all considered staples of University life, but there’s also the more fun side to it: drinking, clubbing, and societies. Unless you’ve lived life until now by the book, drinking and clubbing aren’t new concepts, but joining a society might be. Sort of like after-school activities, societies are essentially a group of students, led by other students, that get together over a shared hobby or passion. While some might see joining societies as a rite of passage, it’s simply a great way to meet like-minded people and make some fantastic friends.

The limit to what a society can base itself around is endless. Typically, you’ll nd plenty of sports and art societies. Sometimes, a society will form around something as simple as a genre of music; other times, they’ll be skill-based and teach members how to make or do certain things. Having an idea of the type of club you want to join is excellent, but so is keeping an open mind. Occasionally, you might get lucky and nd an oddball society o ering unique opportunities! Fresher’s week is all about exploring your newfound independence and discovering di erent things. Your likes and dislikes may change over a year, so try not to limit yourself to a strict plan. That being said, it is sometimes a lot easier making friends with people you already share a similar hobby or skill with!

Usually, societies dedicate one afternoon a week to a group activity, such as a skill class, and then another evening for going out together. Depending on how big your society is, the dedication, and how close its members are, there could be even more sessions throughout the week. If you’re unsure which organisations to check out, certain groups o er unique bonuses to their members. Sports clubs usually grant members free admission to their University gym, while art groups may get discounts on speci c purchases. This means sometimes joining a society isn’t always based on the group itself, but the freebies that come with being a member. It’s important to remember, though, that some societies require you to attend a minimum number of group activities per month.

Taking your time to explore the society stalls at your Fresher’s fair is obviously our top tip for joining societies. Keep an open mind and take as many handouts as you can, listen to the talks each club has prepared, and you may nd a new hobby or interest. Another tip is to avoid joining too many societies. With all the opportunities available, it can be exciting to try and join as many societies as possible. Still, you’ll only have a certain number of hours spare each week while balancing Uni life. Joining one or two clubs might be manageable but joining any more than that risks becoming added stress on top of your studies. With that in mind, don’t be afraid to leave if you think it’s requiring too much time, or if you’re not enjoying it as much as you think you would have. Going along the same lines, you should also never feel pressured to join a society. It’s okay to say no!

Overall, joining societies is supposed to be a fun and interactive experience. These people will become some of your best friends, and group nights out are always entertaining. So be sure to check out your University’s society stalls; they’re one of the best perks of University life.

This is an extremely popular drinking game as it has some fun but simple rules. All you’ll need is a pack of cards, and a pint glass. Place the glass on a table and in a circle-shape lay the cards face-down around it. Each player needs their own drink. One turn at a time a player will pick a card from the ring and read out what they got. Each card has a di erent rule which can be found through a quick search online. Watch out for kings, as players who pick these cards must add some of their drink to the pint glass in the middle. The last player to pick a king card then downs the dirty pint. Yuck! You’ll also have to drink the dirty pint if you break the ring (aka make a gap in the ring of cards).

Roulette drinking games are great for laughs, and a good way to tackle a potentially tense atmosphere. For Beer Roulette, set some cans of beer down on a table, get the participants to turn away and shake one of the cans up. Then, move the cans around and get everyone to grab a can. On the count of three, everyone opens a can. For a cleaner drinking roulette game, try using shots instead. Grab some glasses and ll one up with vodka, the rest with water. Then, have everyone grab a shot and watch to see who got the real one.

When it comes to getting to know each other a little bit better, Never Have I Ever is a brilliant game. Everyone starts with a drink, but the amount needs to be the same. A simple way to do this is to pour the drinks into same sized glasses. Next, pick someone to start the game and have them announce something they’ve never done. For example, “never have I ever not read a Student Pocket Guide magazine.” Try to come up with things you know other people might have done, like getting a piercing or a tattoo, to get them out of the game faster. Continue to move around the circle having everyone say things they’ve never done. Once your cup is empty, you’re out!

Make strong connections with old and new friends like never before. End the awkward silences with PISS’D, the newest fun drinking game that will leave you in hysterics and of course pissed as ever. PISS’D is the ultimate Bar crawl experience in a box with over 8 amazing games over 4 ‘bar’ settings. Alcohol consumption is not required to play this game. EARLIER THIS YEAR YOU HAD THREE SONGS FROM PATCHED UP USED IN THE HIGHLY ADORED NETFLIX HIT HEARTSTOPPER - WHAT WAS THE RESPONSE LIKE TO YOUR SONGS BEING FEATURED IN IT, AND DID YOU HAVE ANY OTHER INVOLVEMENT IN THE SHOW?

Hot! It was a crazy experience, just really di erent crowds and places. I guess I’m still getting used to touring so much but it’s amazing when you’re somewhere new and people are into the show.

YOU’VE COMMENTED BEFORE ON HOW ARTISTS HAVE THIS IDEA THAT EVERY SONG ON THEIR ALBUM NEEDS TO SOUND STYLISTICALLY SIMILAR. I LOVED THIS COMMENT BECAUSE IT’S SO APT, MOST PEOPLE LIKE MORE THAN ONE GENRE OF MUSIC, SO WHY SHOULD WE EXPECT AN ALBUM TO CONFORM TO JUST ONE STYLE? YOU SUBVERT THESE EXPECTATIONS IN BEATOPIA, WAS IT HARD TO GET THIS KIND OF VERSATILITY IN THE ALBUM APPROVED?

WHAT WERE YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENTS MAKING THIS ALBUM?

Honestly, we just felt free to make whatever we wanted to. Jacob my guitarist and I were locked up listening to all di erent music and got creative. I just felt free to make whatever I wanted. I love Fake It Flowers but with that I kind of followed this one sound as far as I could. I’m very proud of what we made this time.

HEY BEA! I’M SO STOKED TO CHAT WITH YOU, THANKS FOR FREEING UP SOME TIME FOR US. SO, GETTING STRAIGHT INTO IT, COACHELLA AND TOURING WITH HALSEY, HOW WAS THAT?

Aaaaaah, how do you even react to that? Taylor is a queen! It was de nitely surreal.

ALSO, I NOTICED A WHILE BACK THAT TAYLOR SWIFT UPLOADED A VIDEO TO HER SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS WITH YOUR SONG SEE YOU SOON, WHICH YOU’VE SAID YOURSELF IS YOUR OWN FAVOURITE TRACK ON THE ALBUM. HOW DID YOU REACT WHEN YOU FOUND OUT? WERE YOU EXPECTING IT?

Just being locked away and tinkering and writing in di erent ways and working so closely with Jacob and Iain to make it perfect. I feel happy in the studio.

I didn’t have any direct involvement in the show, no. I have seen it though, it’s cool to see the songs get used in di erent ways and I’ve always dreamt of my songs being used in movies and stu . It’s also nice my older songs are getting another look; they feel like they’re from such a long time ago, but people can now discover them in di erent ways.

AND, FINALLY, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOUR TOUR? I THINK I MIGHT JUST HAVE TO MAKE AN APPEARANCE AT ONE OF YOUR DATES!

YOU WORKED WITH A LOT OF DIFFERENT ARTISTS ON THIS ALBUM, HELPING YOU FEEL MORE APPRECIATIVE TOWARDS THE PRODUCTION PROCESS. DO YOU THINK YOU’LL CONTINUE WORKING IN THIS COLLABORATIVE MANNER MOVING FORWARD?

YOU ALLUDE TO THE IDEA THAT THIS ALBUM WAS A SORT OF ‘RECLAMATION’ OF YOUR CHILDHOOD FANTASTICAL WORLD ‘BEATOPIA’ AFTER A NASTY EXPERIENCE IN SCHOOL. HAS PRODUCING THIS ALBUM HELPED YOU GET BACK IN TOUCH WITH WHAT ONE MIGHT CALL YOUR ‘INNER CHILD’?

I had never really done that until the EP I put out last year that I made with Matty and George from The 1975, and it was so much fun being collaborative that I was just more open to it this time. We got some amazing people on this: Georgia from Jockstrap, and Robbie from Cavetown, who has the most amazing voice. My friend PinkPantheress is on there too. It’s just fun to do that with people and I’ve learned to enjoy it.

Please do! I can’t wait to tour again. It’s so di erent when you do your own tour, you know that they’re your people and it’s going to be so exciting playing these new songs and some older ones. We’re really thinking about the show this time too, it’s going to be siiiiiiick!

I think it’s always got to be natural. There are some I’d love to do but that would be telling, ha!

I think when you’re a kid you’re just free to be creative and you can tap into that side of yourself. I feel like my rst album was thinking about all these traumatic things and revisiting them but on this record it was that creative side of my inner child that came through.

I mean, it’s the same as anyone I guess, I’m still learning that and how to have that self-love. I’m most comfortable in these songs; that’s a place where you can just be yourself, so I think that’s why it feels honest or authentic.

THERE’S A BIG FOCUS ON ACCEPTANCE AND SELF-GROWTH IN BEATOPIA, WHICH IS NO MEAN FEAT. I FEEL LIKE IT’S EASY TO JUMP ON THE SELF-LOVE BANDWAGON, BUT IT FEELS AUTHENTIC IN YOUR ALBUM. HOW DID YOU PUSH YOURSELF TO START THAT JOURNEY?

DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIFIC AMBITIONS FOR ARTIST COLLABORATIONS YOU’D LIKE TO DO IN THE FUTURE?

Get student discounts. Sign up to sites like Student Pocket Guide for online discounts. Then ask in store and check any website whenever you buy. A huge number of brands o er cheaper deals for students – including Apple, Amazon and Spotify.

Make sure you sign up for everything you need, and nothing you don’t. If you’re covering your mobile phone bill, broadband and media packages for the rst time, think carefully about what you need. Don’t let the salesperson foist extra services on you, but don’t scrimp either because when it comes to your mobile, going over your allowances is expensive.

Consider investing in discount cards. Among the most valuable are the NUS Extra Card and the Young Persons Railcard.

Take advantages of freebies. One of the best is Microsoft software, which is free for students, but there are lots of online communities dedicated to tracking down free stu and letting people know about it such as Money Saving Expert.

Build cheap or free habits with your friends. Nights out are hugely expensive, so rather than feeling you need to spend in order to see your friends, plan regular evenings in together or free activities.

Don’t be wedded to premium brands, and don’t just buy what your parents do. Supermarket own brands and budget ranges are a fraction of the price.

Create and maintain a budget. It’s easy to spend money on unnecessary items, and you can easily get drawn into spending money on things you don’t need, especially whilst scrolling on social media! If it’s not in the budget, think twice before splashing out!

Sign up for supermarket reward cards, which will o er points and some big discounts. When it comes to spending the points, you might need the money o your supermarket shopping, but if you spend with ‘partners’ you can get up to three times as much value.

Shop for food in the evening – check when the local supermarket puts out the yellow sticker bargains, when prices are slashed to clear.

Learn to cook – it’s by far the cheapest way to feed yourself.

Switching to period underwear is the easiest way to help save the planet, plus more comfortable and reliable than disposables. Try it for yourself today.

Asking someone out is always daunting. Whether it’s your rst time or your hundredth, the prospect of rejection is humiliating to many. That’s why we often get tongue-tied, unsure of what to say once interested in someone. From here, many tried-and-true chat up lines crop up again and again. Some are charming and funny compliments, that rarely fail. Others are less convincing, often cringeworthy or even o ensive.

Chat up lines have a time and a place, it’s up to you to judge whether they’re right for a situation. Here are some of the funniest, cringiest, or just darn right foolish chat up lines that have made us chuckle…

I’m not entirely sure a prospective date would be happy being referred to as a chicken, but it’s the thought that counts I suppose!

This one’s more romantic than the others, thankfully. If nerds are your thing, I think we’ve got a winner here!

I reckon we’ve all heard this one at some point. My question is, has it actually ever worked?

Wow. Whoever used this once certainly doesn’t mince words. At least there’s no misunderstanding.

What’s that saying about kissing on a rst date? Well, this line skips all that, and jumps straight into tonsil tennis. Maybe a little forward don’t you think?

Here’s the thing with puns, you either love them or hate them. So this one could be a little risky.

If anyone really uses this this they’re going to walk away with a sore face, because they deserve a slap!

I’m not sure bringing up a tragic accident is the best way to chat someone up. You don’t know unless you’ve tried, I guess.

Well this one certainly paints a vivid picture. Maybe it’s best to give bodily uids a wide berth in a chat up line.

You know what they say, ‘con dence is key’. Though, a humbler approach might bag you a date easier.

What is it with people approaching strangers and talking about sex? They may need reminding that there are other ways of complimenting people.

What did I just say about bodily uids?! Some people have a weird sense of humour, so let’s hope this one’s used on them.

And I thought kissing was forward. It could be best to leave the marriage talk until a few dates in, at least!

ONE LESS WORRY ABOUT UNIVERSITY.STARTINGPERIOD. Period underwear is leak-proof and sustainable, great for your body and the planet. Get yours today. wuka.co.uk T&Cs @wukawearapply*

If there’s one thing University students are known for outside of hangovers and studying (or the lack of), it’s their sex lives. There’s a reason so many relationships end before or during the rst year of University life, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. The only problem is that education about sex is drastically outdated. It might be an awkward topic for many, but it’s super important to discuss intercourse and its more ‘embarrassing’ traits. After all, understanding your and your partners’ bodies and learning how to avoid risks is key to a better and safer experience. Don’t worry, because we’re here to tell you some of the things school didn’t teach about sex.

Safe sex between gay couples is largely unspoken about in schools. This is a huge problem, as the dangers of unsafe sex in homosexual relationships are more signi cant than that of a heterosexual couple. Unfortunately, cases of the human immunode ciency virus (HIV) and acquired immunode ciency syndrome (AIDs) are much higher in men who have sex with other men. However, the topic is still barely touched on. Condoms are usually advertised as just contraceptives, but they are also fantastic at protecting you from sexually transmitted diseases/ infections (STDs/STIs). So, they should be used by everyone, especially if the person is not a regular partner. Putting your safety rst is a top priority, and your sexual partner should always respect that, no matter what.

Porn. It was probably your rst “sexual education” source before receiving the talk about the birds and the bees at school or from your parents. Despite what some people might say, almost everyone watches it. The issue is that most of the content featured within porn is faked for viewing pleasure. This, unfortunately, leads to a lot of confusion for people having their rst sexual experience. Sexpertise is a real thing, so your rst few times might not live up to your expectations. The most important thing is to communicate with and listen to your partner – after all, you both know your own bodies best.

This is probably the worst thing schools left out, and it’s an embarrassing topic to bring up, so most people don’t. Unfortunately, porn has altered how we view our bodies. Because the industry typically only showcases a few “variations,” some people are insecure about their genitals. Like with body shapes, what your genitalia looks like di ers from person to person. If it’s a part of your body, it’s natural, so don’t worry about it. This goes for breasts, too. We’re all di erent shapes and sizes, after all!

The most important takeaway from this article is that sex should be a fun experience between two consenting individuals. Your bodies are supposed to be di erent shapes, and there is absolutely no shame in having sex. Your late teens and early 20s are all about exploring and learning about yourself, so have fun. It’s okay, you can stop cringing now - we’ll stop talking about sex!

Whether the number of people you’ve hooked up with is high or low – it doesn’t matter. Your body count doesn’t represent your worth, and it never should. So, don’t feel ashamed if the number of your sexual experiences is many or few, and don’t allow other people to value your worth against that number, either.

HEY DEAL YEAR TIMES, STAR! Filly Yeaahhhh entertainer. that’s a very good question. It’s actually a very recent one. Yea I can actually…….. I have a secret.

Let’s see if your relationship is written in the stars!

Regardless of if you like yours or not, it’s hard to deny just how accurate zodiac signs can be. Whether you’re taking advice from a nifty horoscope sheet or learning more about yourself, sometimes it becomes a little too personal. In any case, zodiac signs are a fun and unique way to evaluate not only your future but the core of who you are. So, ever wanted to know if you and your best friend/ partner were destined to be?

Have you ever seen a relationship so passionate it had you envious? That was probably the combination of a Sagittarius and Aries. These two re signs are both wild and enthusiastic about life, but their similarities stop there. Despite being re signs, Aries and Sagittarius di er greatly from one another, but it’s these di erences that complement their relationship. This relationship is fundamentally grounded on the appreciation for the other person, and they’ll power through anything life throws at them.

Gemini and Libra are two both highly intellectual signs that enjoy deep mental stimulation and learning. They’re the type of couple that knows how to keep harmony in their relationship by making an e ort to deeply understand one another. This coupling could probably nish each other’s sentences if they wanted to, and their collective thoughts are scarily psychic at times!

Earth and re meet together in this warm and loving relationship. Despite both of these signs being a little hard-headed or self-absorbed at times, they nd ways to love one another in unique and interesting ways that only they can. Two sides of the same coin, Taurus helps to calm Leo’s outgoing party-side, meanwhile Leo does a great job at breaking Taurus out of their shell. If these two can get past their stubbornness and need to be in control, this is one for the books!

So, was your relationship here? Take these pairings with a pinch of salt, as everyone di ers slightly in their personality. Remember that your moon and ascendant signs are sure to impact your results, so make sure to look those up, too!

Typically, people don’t pair these two signs together often, and it’s easy to see why. On paper, they are polar opposites with vastly di erent interests. Cancer needs mental stimulation that other water and earth signs can give them, while Aquarius is an outgoing socialite. Still, reworks go o when these two nd ground to work on, and their relationship is unbreakable. The two will take one another out of their comfort zones and into new and exciting experiences that strengthens each side.

These two grounded individuals paired together might not be what you had expected. However, this pairing is solid as both parties are hardworking, dependable, and ambitious. Each is often described as a workaholic or a homebody. Despite not being as energetic as the re signs, there is still plenty of warmth to be found in their relationship.

This pairing sees the intuition of Scorpio matched by the empathy of Pisces. They’ll know what the other is thinking before they know it themselves, and their hunger to understand other people will have them drawn to each other. Pisces will be fascinated by Scorpios’ more intimidating exterior while Scorpio may nd comfort in Pisces’ more calm and generous nature. Either way, they complement one another well and make for a passionate coupling.

Being able to spend enough time on each is essential for an easy-going university experience. So, choosing the right part time job is a priority. Ensuring reasonable hours, exibility, and decent pay are all factors in choosing. Here are some of the best part time job options most students have available to them.

Being a student, the new nancial independence can become a strain. Most of us aren’t taught money management in school. Because of this, many nd themselves short at the end of the month. A solution to this would be nding a part time job. But balancing studying, working, and socialising is no easy task.

Where there are dogs, dog walkers are always needed!

Similar to bar work, waiting tables is another job to develop conversational skills. Most restaurants expect more formal service compared to bartenders, so this gives a great chance to build up professional relationships with customers and colleagues. An invaluable skill later in life! The universal hours a lot of eateries use lend themselves nicely to students, with part time jobs here being ideal to t around busy schedules. Many establishments give their sta discounts too!

Working behind a bar is probably the most common part time job. For good reason! Most bars and pubs open later, allowing time for students to ful l their duties with university before heading to work. The relaxed vibe of bar work means that once your shift has ended, you won’t be taking work back home with you. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to develop people skills further! Balancing bar work with everything else is doable, with most landlords/managers understanding the strain students are under.

Most students will spend most of their time living in a city, and because of this, neighbourhood dog walking schemes can be an easy way of earning some extra cash. Many of which can be found on Facebook. Within reason, dog walking is safe for most of the day. So nish up your studying, and clear out your head with a nice walk afterwards. It can contribute to success in your education! Breaks in a study period for walking increases productivity exponentially. Another job perk, who wouldn’t want to spend their time looking after the neighbourhood hounds?!

A lot of parents also struggle to balance their own schedules, especially when children are in the picture. So many employ students to look after them while they’re otherwise occupied. Some even hand-pick students depending on their expertise, asking them to tutor their child in addition to caring for them. This would help freshen you up on basic facts in your subject, as well as get you used to being around children.

Many students go into university thinking their time will be spent partying and having a good time. Don’t get me wrong! There is a lot of that. But countless are surprised by the nancial stress it can eventually take. So, nip this problem in the bud before it even emerges. Choose a part time job wisely. Make sure it suits you. Most of all, enjoy the extra cash!

University o ces and libraries are often swamped with admin and other work. Because of this, most universities o er part time admin, receptionist, library or other part time jobs. They understand student schedules, therefore making them ideal for balancing study time. Plus, widening connections on-campus is a great way to make friends, and make opportunities for yourself too. O ce experience always looks good on a CV, broadening your job prospects in the process.

Going from your parents’ house to student accommodation is a fun and exciting experience. You get to fully embrace your independence, live by your own rules, and do whatever your heart desires. But with the change comes one crucial task – cleaning. Living with other students, you’ll come to realise how lthy things like Microwaves can get and how fast they get into that state, too. Cleaning your bathroom will quickly become a tedious task and dealing with dust is never anyone’s favourite chore. So, here’s a list of simple hacks that’ll help keep your accommodation spic and span without spending all day cleaning.

The more people living in one place, the faster the walls of your microwave will build up with food and grease. Juice one lemon into a microwave-safe bowl and pour some water in with it. Then, cut up the same lemon and add the pieces to the water. Microwave the uncovered mixture for three minutes and leave it to sit for a further ve minutes in the microwave to cool down. Carefully remove the bowl with oven mitts as it’ll still be hot. Finally, wipe down the inside of the microwave with a rag, and you’re done!

Not just a tasty beverage, Coca-Cola’s acidic properties make it useful for cleaning purposes as a non-toxic, inexpensive alternative. Simply crack open a can and pour it around the rim of the bowl, letting it ow over any stains. Allow it to sit overnight and ush it away in the morning! Your toilet bowl will be sparkling and as good as new!

Need to get rid of those greasy stains on your mirror? Try a cup of tea! Seriously, black tea is a fantastic tool for cleaning. All you need to do is brew a strong pot of tea (roughly ve or six bags per one litre of water), allowing the mixture to boil for about ve minutes. Let it cool to room temperature, then dip a rag in the tea and wipe away!

Combining grapefruit with some salt makes for a perfect all-natural cleaning alternative. Simply slice your grapefruit in half, sprinkle the surface with some salt and wet the surface of your bath/shower. Sprinkle the wet surfaces with some more salt and start scrubbing away with your grapefruit. Give it a little squeeze every now and then to drizzle the surface with grapefruit juice, especially around the taps and drains. Simply rinse your bath and shower down once you’ve nished scrubbing and discard the grapefruit. Smells divine, and there is zero post-cleaning clean-up!

So, there you have it, some simple, easy, and cheap hacks that’ll keep your new student accommodation fresh (and your parents happy).

Clogged shower drains are incredibly annoying to deal with, especially if you have long hair. And kitchen sinks are even worse. However, you’ll be pleased to know that combining baking soda with vinegar is an e ective cleaning solution! Firstly, boil some water and pour it into the clogged drain. Throw half a cup of baking soda on the drain and allow it to settle. Then empty some vinegar over the layer of baking soda, and watch the magic happen. Leave it like this for an hour or two and wash it all away with more hot water. Repeat as many times as needed!

SO HOW DID YOUR CAREER START IN THE FILM INDUSTRY, WHAT WERE THE EARLY DAYS LIKE?

I’ve just really been focusing on developing, maintaining momentum, and managing our companies: Artist Company and Artist Studio, the past several months.  It’s de nitely been a magic carpet ride with Squid Game, The Silent Sea and All of Us Are Dead – an absolute thrill to have our talent, Lee Jung-jae, Jung Woo-sung and Cho Yi-hyun receive their well deserved recognition!

I started as an assistant in the creative advertising department, speci cally trailer editorial, supporting the VP of marketing services and our team of editors. It was the very beginning of my adulthood and professional career, so everything was exciting.  I was super naive and just really inspired, motivated, and blessed to work for a legendary company – often running into personalities you could only see on TV!  It was surreal..

HEY KYU, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME OUT (OF WHAT I’M SURE IS A VERY BUSY SCHEDULE) TO CHAT WITH ME TODAY. TO KICK THINGS OFF, HOW ARE YOU, WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO LATELY?

I’ve de nitely had the honour to participate in many titles Sony has produced, marketed, and distributed over the years. We had an amazing run with the Spider-Man franchise, 007, and a handful of romantic comedies, which is my favorite genre of them all – The Holiday, Something’s Gotta Give, Hitch, 50 First Dates to name just a few. Attending lming locations, premieres, and meeting so many incredible people from all around the world was an experience of a lifetime.

Yes, 10 years in fact.  Leaving Sony was like leaving home for the rst time or graduating from college – bittersweet?  It was also quite scary because I was leaving such an awesome job. But I also wanted to challenge myself and test my limits.

OBVIOUSLY YOU SPENT A LONG TIME AT SONY PICTURES ENTERTAINMENT, YOUR IMDB PROFILE DESCRIBES YOU AS A VETERAN. HOW DID IT FEEL TO LEAVE AFTER SO MANY YEARS AT SONY?

Absolutely.  There is always the pressure to create the best project possible, given the  expectations that need to be met to extend your lifetime in this business. You never want to let your investors, supporters, distributers and, most importantly, the fans down. We are also in the popularity contest, you know, it comes with the territory! So we’ve got to be on our game at all times. It’s a highly demanding business.

DO YOU EVER FIND THIS LINE OF WORK OVERWHELMING?

The highlight of my career at Sony would have to be having the opportunity to be the assistant to the Vice-Chairman for 5 years. I had the privilege of experiencing rst-hand how a Hollywood studio is operated from top to bottom.  The information, strategies, network, politics and unbelievable opportunities, and experiences were second to none.  I can’t reveal too much though...

YOU’VE OVERSEEN SOME PRETTY HUGE TITLES THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER, WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO WORK ON SO MANY HUGE NAMES? ANY FAVOURITE MOMENTS?

IN THIS KIND OF INDUSTRY, GROWING SUCCESS USUALLY COMES WITH GROWING PRESSURE TO KEEP IMPROVING. IS THIS SOMETHING YOU PERSONALLY FEEL?

To receive recognition is always an honour, no matter how big or small the award. For me personally, it’s been a long time coming, having been in this business for the past 24 years.

Of course. Uncle Ben once said, “with great power comes great responsibility.”  Thanks to the global streaming platforms – Net ix, Apple TV+, Disney+, HBO Max, Amazon etc. – our content is now available around the world from one click of your remote, whenever you please. We’ve built a strong fanbase from all walks of life and now all eyes are on us.  It is our responsibility to continue to create more content. But now that there are expectations we need to maintain, it is imperative that we produce even higher quality content that our viewers are going to enjoy now and even 50 years in the future.

Throughout the years and from my own experiences, I have seen and been a part of ashes of recognition and success. But to now see Asian content maintain momentum and appear on the regular - especially Korean dramas - I am ecstatic and extremely proud of all the hard work everyone has put in, refusing to give up and continuing to grind.

KOREAN FILMOGRAPHY HAS BEGUN TO ESTABLISH A PRETTY IMPRESSIVE GLOBAL REPUTATION FOR ITSELF LATELY, WHAT’S IT BEEN LIKE TO SEE IT FINALLY RECEIVE GLOBAL RECOGNITION?

As I said earlier, I want Korean content to be continous and always sought after. I want it to be a constant craving that’s a routine and standard part of everyone’s lives, in the same way we grew up watching Hollywood lms.

My dreams and goals change constantly. At the beginning of my career, the dream was to build enough experience, in uence and power to create opportunities for my friends and family that deserve the chance to succeed on the main stage. Promoting Asian talent (ie: directors, actors, producers, hair, makeup, stylists, etc) is a mission I have always been on and still am today. But as OTT has turned the tables of opportunity around the world, my present goals are to bring the world to us and show everyone how much excitement and value Korea has to o er. Join us!

AND WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE, IN YOUR CAREER OR EVEN YOUR PERSONAL LIFE?

HOW DO YOU WANT TO SEE THE KOREAN FILM AND TV INDUSTRY PROGRESS MOVING FORWARD?

Depending on what you’re studying at university, it could involve investing in resources like textbooks, stationery, and notepads. For these and bigger buys like laptops and bags, shipping fees can be killer. With the amount of purchases you’ll need to make for university, you need to cut corners sometimes. Thankfully, subscribing to Amazon Prime eliminates shipping fees entirely, giving you the fastest option for free. Among its many other useful features such as Prime Video and exclusive member deals, the headache it’ll save you when buying what you need is well worth the price.

As you’ll quickly discover at university, much of your time there will be spent commuting or waiting for lectures. While this can be tedious at times, listening to music and podcasts helps to keep your mind busy. For more adventurous listeners, they also o er specially catered playlists of new or familiar music based on your tastes, which are always fun to open up every week. Luckily, Spotify Premium gives you access to a massive library of music and podcasts ad-free. Much like Prime, it is heavily discounted or even free depending on what your university o ers so be sure to check with them!

A lot of the work that’s involved in university will be done digitally, whether that’s over PC or tablets. Everything from Word documents to PowerPoint presentations and video les will need to be handled and stored safely over your semesters. Storing them safely is one thing, but you may also need to transfer them between di erent computers and devices. For that, you’ll need Dropbox. With this, it handles all of that for you in one secure, easy to access app or website. For a reasonable annual fee, you’ll never have to worry or fuss over your les again. Discounts may be available as per your university so be sure to check.

There are many reasons to exercise. Whether to keep t, keep active or just to eliminate daily stress, exercise can be incredibly healthy. Luckily, Classpass gives you a reason to keep at it. If, like me, you’re someone who’s previously had anxiety about attending a gym, Classpass o ers workouts and sessions through the app via live-streams and pre-recorded videos. It also o ers reservations for in-person sessions at your local gym and spa for more outgoing types. Either way, it’s important to have a healthy body and a healthy mind at uni, so it’s de nitely worth a chance.

For new and returning students, one of the hurdles you may face is cooking and buying ingredients regularly. For those who don’t want to deal with the hassle sometimes, and those who are new to this; I recommend you try Gousto. For the price of a weekly shop, you get a box lled with recipes and ingredients that you can personally cater. With enough meals to last you the week or perhaps more, this can really help get you on your way to being a masterful cook in no time!

I got into DJing when I was about 8/9 years old, I played at every school disco for years. When I was old enough I started playing the club circuit, spending my weekends going up and down the country. It was during that period where I started to really make a name for myself and I built a fan base by putting mixes on SoundCloud and started producing tracks. In 2018 I got signed to Atlantic and the rest is history!

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR RECENT DANCE TRACK 21 REASONS, FEATURING ELLA HENDERSON. A PERFECT SUMMER TRACK AND FESTIVAL BANGER. HOW DID THE COLLABORATION WITH ELLA HENDERSON COME ABOUT AND WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH HER?

CAN YOU PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOW YOUR MUSIC CAREER BEGAN?

A VERY SMART IDEA TO SAMPLE CALABRIA –21 REASONS GRABS YOUR ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY. HOW DOES THE SAMPLING SIDE OF THINGS WORK?

A lot of it stems from what I play in my sets and if it goes down well then I’ll try some bits in the studio. It doesn’t always work but when it does it can be a real winner. I think it’s just about making it authentic and di erent enough from the original.

THE FIRST SONG OF YOURS I HEARD WAS FLOWERS FEAT. JAYKAE – AS SOMEONE WHO GREW UP LISTENING TO THE ORIGINAL (AND STILL OWNS THE 12” BROWN VINYL), I WAS REALLY IMPRESSED WITH YOUR REMIX AND HOW YOU MANAGED TO REVIVE AND MODERNISE THE OLD SCHOOL GARAGE CLASSIC. THIS WASN’T THE FIRST TIME YOU’D WORKED WITH JAYKAE – DO YOU HAVE ANY MORE PLANS TO COLLABORATE TOGETHER IN THE FUTURE? ‘Flowers’ is a special tune for him as it was my rst chart hit. We released it in October 2019 and I don’t think it peaked until July 2020 which was crazy!! I’ve worked with Jay a few times. He’s a great mate of mine and an unbelievable artist. We’ll de nitely work together again in the future no doubt.

At the back end of last year I was playing with the idea of sampling Calabria as I play it in all my sets and it goes down amazingly. As soon as the track was done, I knew I had to bring Ella in to help with the lyrics and vocal. Me and Ella worked together on my single ‘Lighter’, so we’ve already got a great synergy in the studio and I knew she’d absolutely smash the top line. Ella’s vocal is one of the best in the country and she just bought the track to life.

AS A PROFESSIONAL PRODUCER/ARTIST, WHAT IS YOUR MAIN AIM AND WHAT ARE YOUR DREAMS?

It’s to just keep making music that people love and can dance to. I think as a DJ/producer that is always the aim. I’m very lucky to do what I do and I’m just going to keep working hard to deliver these singles and to keep performing.

I think performing will always be the best feeling in the world. There’s nothing better than playing a track that’s yours in front of thousands of people and hearing them sing it back. It’s honestly the most incredible feeling.

AS SOMEONE WHO HAS COLLABORATED WITH MANY MASSIVE NAMES, RELEASED YOUR OWN PRODUCTIONS, PERFORMED AT FESTIVALS AND RESIDENCIES ABROAD, AND ALSO HAD YOUR OWN SELL-OUT TOUR, WHAT PART OF YOUR CAREER EXCITES YOU THE MOST / WHAT DO YOU MOST ENJOY?

WHAT ARE SAY, THE NEXT 3 GOALS FOR NATHAN DAWE?

YOU’VE WORKED WITH SOME OF THE BIGGEST NAMES IN THE MUSIC SCENE INCLUDING KSI, LITTLE MIX AND ANNE-MARIE. YOU’RE CLEARLY SMASHING IT – WHAT WAS YOUR BREAKTHROUGH MOMENT WOULD YOU SAY?

‘Cheatin’ was my rst single and even though it wasn’t a Top 40, I always feel as if that’s the one that got things started. To this day it always goes down amazingly in my sets and has sold over 400,000 records, so it was my introduction into the industry. All my records have been special moments for me and di erent stages of my career, so it’s di cult to pick one on its own.

WHAT ADVICE MIGHT YOU OFFER TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO MAKE IT BIG IN THE MUSIC SCENE?

To work hard and stay true to you. When I’ve done the latter I’ve always seemed to have success. Whenever I’ve strayed from doing what my gut tells me to do, that’s where I’ve had harder moments.

More releases. More shows. More fun!

You could get bored of pasta, but luckily you can swap it with whole grain rice which also has a high bre content. It can be used in a variety of autumn and winter-friendly meals, such as curry and special fried rice. We don’t recommend re-heating rice as you can run the risk of food poisoning.

Its bre content is much higher than regular white pasta, meaning it will keep you feeling fuller for longer. It’s versatile and can make a delicious meal hot or cold, plus it can be kept in the fridge for three to ve days after cooking so you can use it again.

During the colder months, a cooking enthusiast will rely a lot more on the contents of the cupboard as opposed to the fridge. When the farmers’ market looks empty, fresh food comes from afarmake sure you have these cupboard essentials to get you by…

Eating cupboard-based meals might result in occasional blandness, so make sure you stock up on your favourite condiments and sauces so that you can easily add more avour to your cooking.

The tomato is a fantastically versatile ingredient; it takes centre stage in most of its dishes. With them you can make a simple pasta sauce, or they can be used to make chilli, bolognese, or the tomato sauce on pizzas. Not to mention tomatoes are great for reducing the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Again, tuna can be used in many dishes; it can make a simple tuna sandwich, tuna salad, or can be topped on a jacket potato with some sweetcorn. But it is also used in more substantial dishes such as a tuna bake. Tinned tuna isn’t your only option; you can also use salmon, pilchards, and sardines. To keep the salt content down, try to buy tuna which has been tinned in water or oil, not brine.

A simple ingredient which counts as one of your ve a day, onions are another versatile ingredient which can be used when cooking or just making a salad. They last for long periods of time as long as they are kept in a dry, cool, dark place - they don’t need to be refrigerated.

New potatoes, baking potatoes, or sweet potatoes - these popular root vegetables will keep well stored somewhere which is dark, cool, and dry. They can make a starchy accompaniment to a meal on your plate, or they can be a meal in themselves - chips, jacket potatoes, mashed, roasted, or loaded potato skins. Keeping the skins on will add more bre to your meal.

Dried herbs and spices are an inexpensive way of adding more avour to your cooking, and they keep for long periods of time in your cupboard if they are kept out of direct sunlight and well sealed.

It has more uses than you think. Flour isn’t just for baking, it can be used to thicken up sauces and casseroles, and to make pancakes. Also, it will keep in your cupboard for over a year!

Apricots, gs, sultanas, dates, and raisins are good for adding extra sweetness to desserts, breakfasts, stews, and casseroles. Plus, they contribute to your ve a day and are rich in iron and bre.

They’re all great for bulking out meals and adding more protein. Enjoy them in a stew, in pastas, on top of your jacket potato, or just as a side dish to another meal. They are a quick and easy way to increase the nutritional value of a meal and add some colour.

Remove a small bowlful, blitz with 200ml of stock and add it back to the stewinstant creaminess.

Melt the butter in a large pan. Add the onions, carrot, celery, bay leaves and rosemary, then the garlic. When the vegetables have softened, add the lentils and pour 1litre of the stock. Bring to the boil and leave to simmer.
