Resolution: A firm decision to do or not to do something. Thank you, Oxford English Dictionary. It is one of those words which only comes out to play at certain times of year and in this case, used in a similar context to that of eating mince pies and knocking back mulled wine. We do it once a year, over the festive period, that is all. Yes, I am of course talking about the infamous human tradition of making a New Year’s Resolution. Want to hear mine for 2013? Save more money. Will it happen? Probably not. One thing we can be sure of at The Student Pocket Guide is that we have no desirable need to make a resolution. Oh the arrogance! But, as with every edition we produce, we have packed this one full of everything you need to read. Advice, tick. Recipes, tick. Competitions, tick. Interviews with not one, not two, but three artists at the peak of the music industry, tick. Yes, inside you will find insightful chats with X Factor winner, James Arthur, and two musicians who know what it feels like to have a number one selling album in the UK, Ellie Goulding, and Justin, no sorry, Conor Maynard! A great line-up. But, the good gets better and doesn’t stop there. We have over 100 audience tickets for the new series of Britain’s Got Talent to giveaway across England, Scotland and Wales. On top of that, we have a digital camera kit worth £429 up for grabs, plus all the usual student deals and discounts! And, almost forgot to mention... We have teamed up with SPG favourite, Gabrielle Aplin, who is giving you the chance to host your very own intimate gig, with her, in the comfort of your home! So, as we wave goodbye to an unforgettable year, our arms are wide open in embrace for another. Let’s make it a good ‘un, hey!

WIN AN INTIMATE HOUSE GIG WITH

GABRIELLE APLIN Gabrielle Aplin is a big favourite of ours. Having started out uploading covers on YouTube in her early teens, she is now one of the hottest artists in the UK, having scooped herself a deserved number one over the festive period with her version of Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s, ‘The Power of Love’. It was the trademark feature of the blockbuster John Lewis Christmas advert, which has propelled her already promising music career. And now, we are giving you the opportunity to host an intimate gig, with Gabrielle, in your very own home! Did I mention drinks are provided and also cleaners the next day? No? Well, they are... She is a talent we at The Student Pocket Guide spotted early and tipped for the success she seems to be reaping now. Not that we’re blowing our own trumpet or anything! At Larmer Tree Festival last summer, we were fortunate enough to spend some time with her, as she told us all about her journey so far, whilst also recording two exclusive acoustic tracks for SPGtv. With her debut album out this spring, Gabrielle is only going to be further in the limelight in 2013. If you want to host a truly one-off night with the gifted Gabrielle, simply head over to TheStudentPocketGuide.com.

Interviews Sub Focus – Known for his incredible live shows and instantly likable tunes, we took a few moments out of international, bass-music superstar Sub Focus’ time during his recent UK tour. We heard all about his top DJ tech, dream collaborations and his plans for the next six months. Parade – Beautiful and talented, the Parade girls took time out of their busy schedule to chat with us at the 2012 Sundown Festival. They may have had a run-in with a hedgehog earlier that day, but the girls were still in good spirits as they dished all the gossip on their upcoming second album, and told us about their favourite gigs. Sessions The Summer Set – Brian and John from American pop-rock band, The Summer Set, treated us to an exclusive performance of ‘Love to You’. This stripped down, acoustic version of the track is an incredible watch, as Brian’s powerful vocals ring out through the room, backed by John’s delicate strumming on guitar. Fossil Collective – The full band turned out to perform this brilliant version of their new single ‘On and On’. With some amazing vocal harmonies and intricate guitar finger-work, this is a fantastic live version of the beautiful, haunting track, which is sure to stay with you for quite some time.

James Arthur isn’t like other X Factor winners. Far from fitting the run-of-the-mill mould, he has already established a unique identity which leaves you thinking he has been around for years. It was this identity that won the hearts of the nation and ultimately defied the odds to see him crowned as 2012’s champion. With a number one single, record sales figures for a debut X Factor release and being the first winner of the show to have once been in the bottom two, suggests breaking milestones and doing things his own way are feats he will not shy away from. Here he tells us how his life has changed and what we can expect from his debut album. How are you feeling James? Has it sunk in that you have actually won The X Factor?! Ah, there’s no way to describe how it feels winning The X Factor. It has finally sunk in because, you know, I’ve been doing a lot of talking about it! But yeah, it’s great. I feel like I’m the luckiest man on earth at the minute. What’s the weirdest thing about your life that’s changed throughout the whole series, that maybe you were not expecting? The weirdest thing is when you’re leaving a hotel or studio, and there’s people clambering over, giving you Twitter names so you can

follow them. It means so much to people and you see the excitement on these people’s faces. In my life before this, the best thing I ever did for anyone was probably lend them a quid or something, but it’s nice to see the reaction on people’s faces and making them happy. And you have lots of ladies after you, not that they weren’t before! I’m guessing there’s even more now? There wasn’t a massive amount of ladies interested before, I was always a boyfriend kind of guy. I just like to have a girlfriend and stick with one person. But yeah, it’s nice to have female attention. I’m flattered by it. Are you saying that things have changed now, and you want to go out there and have some fun? I’d like to get out there, meet people, and find the right

>>

person for me. I’m under no illusions that I’m this heartthrob or anything like that. Hopefully, I will find someone who isn’t interested in the fact that I’m a musician or purely because I was on a talent show. Simon has been in touch. How are you feeling about meeting and working with him? Yeah, I’m really excited to meet Simon Cowell. I’ve got a lot of respect for the man. He’s done a lot for the music industry in terms of the fact he’s changed people’s lives. He’s found people from the gutter and made them into stars. You only have to look at people like One Direction, Leona Lewis and JLS to see their massive success, and they came from humble beginnings. He’s really found talent and nurtured it in the right way.

Do you think she’ll be back? It’s up to Nicole. She’s an artist and I know she writes all the time, so she may want to put something out there next year. I think the UK are in love with her and would love her back. I’d love to return next year as a guest and see her behind the panel, it would be amazing.

ow has been “Thineg sh on for a lot of

go years and there’s press about it needing a revamp, yet, we’ve got thefastestsellingsingle and I’m really excited to be a part of that.

Do you think The X Factor needs him back? The panel that we’ve got at the minute is doing alright. We’ve got the fastest selling X Factor single yet, so they can’t be doing too much wrong. But you know, if Simon comes back, I’m sure people would love to see it.

Who would your dream collaboration be with, outside the parameters of the show? My dream collaboration would be with Lauryn Hill or Eminem, but that’s a long shot. There’s an endless list of people out there right now, I wouldn’t even like to shortlist them. The obvious ones are Emile Sandé, who is amazing. Also Ed Sheeran, Labrinth, Plan B. There are a lot of people out there who are great.

Obviously week in, week out, we had the judges judging you. Who do you think was the best judge this time round? Nicole was the best judge. She’s my girl, I love Nicole and I’ll forever remain friends with her because she has inspired me so much. I admire her and her work.

Have you got a game plan? My game plan is to get in the studio and lay down every song I’ve ever written and shortlist them into the best possible album I can have. After that, it’s about producing them in the right way. I will definitely be writing all the tracks on my album.

If you had a wish for 2013, what would it be? In 2013, I would love to bring out an album and for it to be a worldwide success. And also, to really help some people out with the stories that I tell in my songs. How have your friends and family reacted to you winning? They hate it, wish it never happened... Nah only kidding! They’ve reacted amazingly to it. They are very proud because they have seen me work very hard over the years to try and make music my fulltime job. Now, they’ve seen me do that in the best possible way. What about the other contestants - who do you think you’ll stay in touch with? I’ll stay in touch with all the contestants that have been involved this year, especially Jahmene. I absolutely adore the man, I think he’s a real inspiration. I guess you weren’t too surprised by how well the single did, but are you relieved that it has? Yeah, you know, when people started talking about the statistics for it being the fastest selling X Factor single, I was like, “Really, this is incredible?!”. The show has been going on for a lot of years and there’s press about it needing a revamp, yet, we’ve got the fastest selling single and I’m really excited to be a part of that.

Prawn Teriyaki Ramen Noodles It’s very tempting as a student to resort to your local takeaway menu when you have a few mates over for dinner. But what if you could stock your store cupboard with a few basic Chinese ingredients and recreate those favourites in less than 15 mins, time and time again, without having to dig too deep into your pockets. These two dishes do just that!

Ingredients: 3 tbsp of soy sauce 3 tbsp of mirin 1 tbsp of honey 1 tbsp of sesame oil knob of fresh ginger, peeled 2 cloves of garlic, peeled 1 red chilli

raw prawns (150g) pack of ramen noodles handful of fresh coriander few spring onions small bag of mangetout, sliced handful of bean sprouts

mix the soy sauce, mirin, honey and sesame oil together. grate the ginger, garlic and dice the chilli, then add to mix. pour boiling water over the noodles in a bowl and leave for 3-4 minutes. toss in a little oil to stop them sticking. fry the prawns in a hot wok with a tiny splash of oil for 30 seconds, then add the mangetout and bean sprouts, cooking for a minute more. pour the sauce and noodles into the pan and keep the contents of the pan moving as it all heats through. chop the coriander and spring onions then sprinkle over dish before serving. serves 2 Check out our brand new cookbook! Black Bean Beef and Egg-Fried Rice beef steak (400g) 2 tbsp of soy sauce long grain rice (300g) 1 clove of garlic ½ a red chilli a thumb-sized piece of ginger 1 yellow pepper 1 small pak choi 2 spring onions 2 tbsp of black bean sauce

1 glug of vegetable oil 1 glug of sesame oil 2 eggs, beaten a handful of fresh coriander

slice the beef into strips and put in a bowl with the soy sauce. put the rice into salted boiling water, stir and simmer according to the packet instructions. peel the garlic and ginger, then deseed the chilli and finely dice them all. cut the pepper, pak choi and spring onions into thin strips. fry the garlic, ginger and chilli in a hot wok with a glug of oil for one minute. add the pepper and pak choi to the pan and cook for a few minutes. put the beef slices, spring onion and black bean sauce into the wok and bring to a simmer. transfer everything from the wok to a bowl and cover with tin foil to keep warm in a low oven. drain the rice when cooked. wipe the wok clean with kitchen roll and add a glug of the sesame oil to the pan. pour the beaten egg into the wok when hot and move it around with a wooden spoon. add the drained, hot rice to the wok once the egg has started to cook and coat in the sesame oil before sprinkling in the coriander. spoon a heap of rice onto a plate with a portion of the beef stir fry. serves 4

EAT WELL

Peter Bakare is an Olympic athlete who represented Team GB in Men’s Volleyball during last summer’s historic games. Studying animation at Sheffield Hallam whilst also training for GB development, he knows firsthand how hard it can be balancing academic work with physical sport, especially when it comes to maintaining a healthy diet. Here he has provided key nutritional advice for staying at the top of your game.

Eating the right nutrition is crucial in attaining results both in and out of the classroom. Cutting back on those late night kebabs, dodgy Chinese takeaways and pizza deliveries is a good way to start. It won’t be long until you notice a large improvement with your mood and general well being when you start being conscious of what goes into your body. It’s not all about exercise. Ensuring you get the right nutrition is essential in keeping a healthy body and a healthy mind.

THE BASICS The basics of nutrition start with the macronutrients: proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Each nutritional component plays a vital role. • Protein is responsible for tissue growth and repair; crucial for building muscle and lean mass. EAT: Quality proteins - lean meats, eggs, poultry, fish, and whey. • Carbohydrates are the bodies preferred energy source. They come in two forms, simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. EAT: Complex carbs vegetables, whole grains, legumes (beans and peas), and fruits. • Fats are crucial for hormone production, hair and skin care, cell function and organ protection. EAT: Healthy fats - fish and olive oil.

DON’T SKIP BREAKFAST Skipping breakfast seems like one of the easiest things to do but starting the day with a healthy one maintains a steady source of energy. Ultimately, this means you are likely to get more out of your academic sessions and more importantly, stay awake during class. If time is an issue, try one of the following quick and easy breakfast combinations: • Yoghurt smoothie with a cereal bar • Instant oatmeal with fruit and milk • Wholegrain toast with peanut butter, banana and milk

COUNTING CALORIES AND BMI University life can be extremely hectic which makes it difficult to keep track of how much food you consume each day. On average, women should consume 2000 calories and for men, 2500 calories. This figure does of course vary with people of different figures. An easy way to assess if you are maintaining a healthy weight is through calculating your Body Mass Index (BMI). Use the chart on the right to calculate this for yourself. If you are underweight, it is advised that you should be consuming more calories than you currently are. If you’re overweight, try consuming less.

HEALTHY EATING Planning your meals and nutritional intake is essential in maintaining a healthy diet and achieving your physical goals. With that in mind, make sure you buy foods that will help you achieve what you want to achieve and also give you the longterm nutritional health benefits. Whether you’re trying to put on weight, lose weight, or simply trying to keep healthy, eating balanced meals is crucial. Think of your body like a car. If you put in the wrong fuel it will not function. And you’ll have to pay a hefty price to fix it. Your body needs the right nutrition to maximise the benefits.

WORKING OUT If you want to build muscle, a quick and simple calculation is to multiply your weight (in pounds) by 17.5. This will give you a rough estimate of how many calories your body needs per day (not per meal!). Dividing your calorie intake into the following percentages will also help you achieve your goal: 40% proteins, 40% carbs and 20% fats. Many people ask how much protein your body should have to pack on muscle. Try consuming 2g of protein for every kilogram of body weight each day. For example, if you weigh 80kg you should be eating approximately 160g of protein from a combination of foods and supplements for heavy muscle growth. It may seem like this is a lot of calories to take in but you can’t add mass without the extra calorie intake. *Top Tip - Many athletes eat smaller meals but more regularly in order to get the right nutrients which will repair the body throughout the day. Eating regularly helps manage hunger cravings and can help prevent unhealthy snacking. Grazing on nuts, berries or dried fruit can be a perfect snack between meals.

HYDRATION Staying hydrated is incredibly important. Not just for when you’re exercising or playing sports but also when you are studying. Concentration levels reduce when you are dehydrated, which can seriously hamper how much you take in during lectures and seminars. Having a cup of tea before a 9am lecture will help massively. During sports or training, being dehydrated can easily make you lose 2% of your body weight and also decrease your performance by up to 25%. It’s a no brainer that staying hydrated is important. Aim to consume about 16-24 ounces of fluid per hour during practice or training lasting 60 minutes or more. If you’re playing sport or training for more than 90 minutes, make sure you consume extra carbohydrates in the form of sports drinks, sports bars, gels or high-carbohydrate foods (i.e. fig bars or sliced fruit). BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT TO BE WON! in association with:

TM

Britain’s Got Talent is rightfully one of the nation’s best loved shows on TV. Open to anyone, of any age, with absolutely any talent; from fire eaters to acrobats, dancers to divas, aerial performers to animal acts, you can expect to see them all live on stage! ITV’s hit show has played host to some of the most famous auditions in British television history, and you could be there this year to witness more of the same. Famous Auditions: SuBo

Susan Boyle, or SuBo as she has come to be known, made history in 2009 with her rendition of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ from the Les Miserables musical, which shook the nation and left judge Amanda Holden in tears. It has since been viewed online in staggering volumes, making her arguably the most famous person who has auditioned for a televised talent show, ever.

Ashley & Pudsey

Methane Man

Methane Man is another famous example, but probably for the wrong reasons. Claiming to be the World’s only performing flatulist, or otherwise put, professional farter, Paul Oldfield auditioned in the 2009 series alongside SuBo. Appearing on stage in a rather comical superhero costume, he stated he wished to “Put the art into fart”, which was followed by Simon and Amanda giving him the red light before the audition had even begun.

Pudsey the dog and his human companion come trainer, Ashleigh Butler, were the winners of the 2012 series who Simon Cowell famously labelled the show’s, “Biggest stars yet”. In their audition, the pair performed a winning routine to the Flintstones soundtrack, which wowed both the judges and the public. The rest, as we know, is history.

Got To Dance Semi-Finals

With an all-star judging line-up including Kimberly Wyatt, Ashley Banjo and new boy, Aston Merrygold, Got to Dance is set to cause storms yet again as it returns to our screens this January. The bar was set incredibly high last series with Irish dance group Prodijig, argued to be the show’s greatest ever act, winning the final. Can the bar be raised even higher this series?

Celebrity Juice

There is nothing quite like Celebrity Juice. Hosted by the enigmatic Keith Lemon on ITV2, the show is riddled with innuendos, ridicule and downright outrageousness. Entering into its ninth series this spring, the show has been voted “Worst British TV Panel Show” for the past three years running at the British Comedy Guide’s annual awards. But, that is exactly why we absolutely love it!

It’s inevitable - every year will always come with an endless list of films to watch, and with so much happening in the world of cinema, it can be hard to keep track of it all. So, we’ve taken a look over the next 12 months and compiled our list of the years mustsee films, and we reckon there’s plenty to be excited about…

Gangster Squad

Iron Man 3

To begin with, Gangster Squad, whose release date was postponed for months, will finally be out in January. Seeing Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling together on the big screen again is a must, as these two young actors have proved they are able to play any role. From comedy to action, they can not only do it, but also make you believe it. Moreover, Sean Penn and Josh Brolin taking part in the production makes the movie even more appealing. If you are a fan of films such as The Godfather, you will definitely enjoy this fast paced action based in 1950’s Los Angeles.

If you didn’t have enough of Robert Downey Jr.’s witty character in the Avengers, Iron Man 3 is going to hit the cinemas in 2013. It seems that this time Tony Stark will have to save something much closer to him – Pepper. The iron man who needs a heart has finally found a good reason to fight evil in the world. However, we are left with the impression that the battle will be between two men in iron suits, rather than real life super villains. The audience will have to wait until April to decide whether the third part is a hit or miss.

Man of Steel

The Host

Elysium

Still on the hero wave, the new Superman film will also be out in 2013. Henry Cavill, the heart throb we know from Immortals and Cold Light of Day, will be playing Clark Kent in Man of Steel. Although the last Superman film was released 6 years ago, again by Warner Brothers, fans will not be disappointed. The trailer of the production promises a dramatic plot with a hero torn apart by his choices. However, the film about the most famous superhero does not imply to have those unbelievable action scenes so usual for this genre.

Twilight fans should not worry either. Although the saga has reached its end, The Host, Stephany Mayer’s other famous book, is going to be released as a film in 2013. The impossible love between vampires is now replaced with the occurrence of aliens. However, if you prefer to stick with the supernatural, Beautiful Creatures is the other fantasy choice. Woods, death, a scent of magic and among all this supernatural atmosphere, a teenage love affair, make this film the next youngster’s obsession.

If you are a fan of the sci-fi genre then Elysium, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, will leave you breathless. Situated on a space platform in the distant 2159, when the Earth is close to ruin and full of disease, Max (Damon) will engage in a mission to not only save his own in association life, but also bring equality with: to the population. So far, critics have been very generous with their praise, but the audience will have to wait until August to cast their judgment.

The Desolation of Smaug

The Great Gatsby

One of the films you should definitely not miss this year is the second part of The Hobbit trilogy. The Desolation of Smaug is promising to be even better than the first film. Peter Jackson has raised our expectations with his previous productions, so the audience is looking forward to an amazing cinematography experience. Moreover, Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug will be joining his Sherlock colleague, Martin Freeman, and we all know how these two actors are great together. However, fans will be waiting until the beginning of December to get a glimpse of Middle Earth again.

Finally, Leonardo Dicaprio stars in the upcoming incarnation of The Great Gatsby. The all time classic novel based film will be released in 2013. It depicts the luxurious, yet tragic life of Jay Gatsby, the title character of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel. Although it reminds of Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby offers a wider emotional range. The seventh version of the novel includes so many famous actors, such as Tobey Maguire and Isla Fisher, that it is destined to be a box office hit.

ELLIE GOUL After a turbulent period since her emphatic breakthrough in 2010, Ellie Goulding has returned to the big stage with new album, Halcyon. It is an ethereal showcase of her undoubtedly gifted and distinctive talent, which sees her music take a slight change of course to the darker sounds and influences of electronic music. With her debut album, Lights, having sold 1.5 million copies, as well as 5 million single sales worldwide, the pressure could hardly have been greater for Ellie to produce the problematic second record. Three years, and two high profile break-ups later, she has yet again received the acclaims of critics across the globe, with what appears to be a collection of her best music yet. We recently caught up with her to hear things from her point of view.

LDING >>

I pu a lo it m shar

I am sure you are aware that the reception surrounding Halcyon has been amazing. Have you had a chance to get your head around it all? I’m just really glad. The nicest thing people have said is that I’ve grown as an artist and taken a step up, which is obviously way better than taking a step down! It’s been wicked, so cool. I have had the most incredible reaction to the point where it makes me really emotional. Was there any inspiration behind Halcyon being a type of seabird when you were choosing the album title? Well, I wrote so much of it by the sea and spent a lot of time there by myself, you know, really taking it in. A lot of the songs have an ocean theme because of that. I think I’ve always just been fascinated by the sea and the idea of there being this underworld. Halcyon has a darker side to it; it explores the idea of paradise but also the opposite side of that. Would you say this record is more important to you than your first? I don’t know... I felt like it was the first time that I had a really strong vision. These are songs that for the past few years whilst I’ve been doing all this crazy stuff have been coming into my head, and now to actually hear them become a cohesive piece of work, is an amazing feeling.

t a lot into this record, t of personal stuff, and akes me so excited to re it with everyone

Could you tell us about your new single, Figure 8? It’s just about how awful unrequited love is, and the whole agony of someone not loving you back. Would you say it’s one of your most obvious steps away from your previous music, in terms of the newfound electronic feel? I guess so, but my last single is also very electronic. They both have a lot of electronic elements to them but also have a very different sound. Your touring schedule for 2013 is quite hectic! Some might say you’ll be needing a lot of stamina... Haha, yeah! I’m kinda used to it now though, not as in “Oh yeah, I’ve done it all before”, but I really have been doing it a lot and found myself getting used to things and certain routines. I’ll be alright! A lot of British artists enjoy the whole romanticism of touring The States. Do you feel the same? I did a huge tour of America for about six weeks and it was really hard; I found that very difficult. I was playing smaller venues and it was probably the longest I had been away from home before. The second one was much easier. Once you’ve done it, it gets easier and it is exciting touring The States. You visit some really, really cool places, meet random people and the whole thing is quite exotic. I do like coming home though. I don’t really spend that much time there. I saw quite a funny Daily Mail headline quote from yourself, vaguely related to being on the road... Oh God! There have been many!

It was, Ellie Goulding: “I’ve had my fair share of underwear thrown at me”... Ah, of course there would be that headline! The thing is I said it in such jest as well. But yeah, I guess I have!

Peopl they d my mu which

I really like the music videos from this album. They have a mysterious, arty feel to them, especially Figure 8. Do you have an input with what you want your videos to be like? Yeah, I love the Figure 8 video! My friend who is a professional Freerunner is in it, he’s so cool! I never used to have much of an input, mainly because I was never that bothered, but now I guess I’m very bothered! A running theme in this edition of SPG is guilty pleasures... What are yours? Chocolate, sweets and Geordie Shore. Those are the three that spring to mind!

e keep saying don’t know where usic will go next, is amazing.

CONOR MAYNARD EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW AND COMPETITION

So, your UK tour kicked off last night in your hometown, Brighton. Did it all go to plan? Yeah, it was amazing. I think it definitely opened my eyes to the fact it’s going to be a lot of work and quite difficult doing it each and every night, but, if the crowds react like they did last night, then it should be absolutely amazing!

It was crazy, and obviously to get the chance to work with him just blew that first moment out of the water! I did the single with him, the music video with him, performed with him, all of that stuff. He’s become a mentor not only musically but as a person as well. He’s had all these hits but he’s so cool and down to earth.

Have you had to put in a lot of hours rehearsing? Yeah, we spent about three or four days before the tour rehearsing and making sure everything was perfect. There are a few surprises in there for the fans, so they should enjoy it.

You’ve also worked with some other huge names on your album. Was there anyone who you found really cool and inspirational? I’ve had loads of moments where I’ve been a bit star struck in terms of the people who I’ve met. Walking into the studio with Pharrell, in Miami, was insane; I got to spend a week with him recording. That was definitely one of the moments where I was very inspired. He’s so normal and cool, but when he sits in front of a keyboard he is just insane! Afterwards, he’ll sit down and play Mario Kart for ages, he’s just the coolest person! Rita Ora is another; I’ve known her from back when I was first signed. Getting to work with her was crazy, she’s an amazingly talented artist who’s blown up now as well. Frank Ocean is another. I mean there’ so many amazing people that I’ve had the chance to work with on this album, so I am truly thankful.

2012 was obviously a huge year for you. The biggest year of your life would you say? I would say so. Apart from 2007 when I got a Playstation 2 for Christmas! There’s a battle there, but yeah, it’s definitely been a big year! You have a single out at the moment with Ne-Yo, who was actually the guy who discovered your YouTube talent as well. How does it feel to have something out there with him? It’s crazy. For me, the first time I got to meet him was an insane moment. He was someone that I used to listen to growing up and then suddenly I was in a room talking to him about music.

I put up a status on all my friends to Facebook oing to be on g saying, ‘I’m e tonight, Mum Juic Celebrity ’t watch!’ n o d e s a ple

Moving off music slightly, you have recently appeared on a couple of major British television programmes. Never Mind The Buzzcocks being one and also Celebrity Juice, which was hilarious! I can’t believe my parents actually watched that! I put up a status on Facebook to all my friends saying, “I’m going to be on Celebrity Juice tonight, Mum please don’t watch!”. She wasn’t actually going to watch but then she kept getting phone calls about it, so she ended up watching it with my Dad, and now they want to disown me... A sex education lesson from Keith Lemon as well, not many people get that opportunity! No, exactly! I learnt a lot of things that day. I feel truly enlightened in that sense of my life, so yeah, great! Did you get a chance to speak to Katie Price off camera as well? Yeah, I did. We actually had something to speak about. She’s spent a lot of time in Brighton, I’m obviously from there, so we had a little chat about it. I think she sometimes gets a bit misunderstood on those kind of shows

because she knows what she’s going to get, so she builds up this defence. She always says she comes across as rude on TV shows but she’s just trying to defend herself. She was actually really nice off camera, she was really cool. A lot of my friends were saying to me, “You should watch out for Katie Price” and I was like “Why, what’s going to happen?!”, but like I said, she was really nice. She said you were a bit of alright as well... Haha! She said something that I didn’t understand at first! I said to her, “Oh, apparently if I was a bit older...” and then she said, “Yeah, you’re a sort”. I was like, I have no idea what that means! I’ve been following you on Twitter recently, not that I stalk you or anything... That’s why you were screaming outside when I walked in! “I’m really just a fan, all these cameras are a set up”... Haha, yep! Where was I?.. Twitter, Paranormal Activity 4! Yeah, I just watched it at a VUE Cinema. Have you ever been into those VUE Xtreme cinema rooms?

The 3D rooms? Yeah, I think they’re 3D but also the screen is like an Imax, they are huge! There is literally nowhere to hide. It’s one of those films where it’s that scary you’re just laughing and waiting for something to happen. Then it happens and you s@*t yourself! I was on edge the entire film. Some quick fire questions... What is your guilty pleasure? Probably chick flicks. Any examples? Mean Girls, John Tucker Must Die. Your best, worst joke? OK. A dinosaur, a dolphin and a lizard went to the supermarket. The dolphin ate all the bananas, and the dinosaur ate the dolphin... I’m lost... That’s it! I’m going to be hanging on to the punch line all evening! Cheers for that, it is bad! Haha yep! Finish this sentence, the awkward moment when... You’re texting someone about somebody else, but you send it to the person you’re talking about. I like it. So, to wrap things up, what plans have you in line for 2013? I’m probably going to spend a lot of time in America; my album comes out in January over there so I’ll be doing a lot of work. I’m actually now working on some new stuff for upcoming singles and albums. So yeah, I think I’m just going to continue working on new music, doing different shows, and hopefully another tour so I can come back here, which would be really cool!

Artist: Charlotte Roseberry Institute: Edinburgh College of Art Description: This small piece was a part of a larger collection of Charlotte’s work which was concerned with graphic and bold aesthetics, but also how the paint and material fuel the artists practice and paintings. Charlotte is interested in the idea of a sharp digital aesthetic created by hand; the juxtaposition of the real and the surreal, the here and the not here, as expressed in this painting. The process and the way in which imagery can be used to create surreal narratives, are always the most important factors for Charlotte.

Artist: Sara Ljeskovac Institute: Edinburgh College of Art Description: Sara was inspired to work with an animal theme after visiting the National Museum of Edinburgh for the ďŹ rst time. The piece was made using only ďŹ ngerprints and relates to how closely our DNA is linked to that of a chimpanzee.

Artist: Bonnie Carswell Institute: Birmingham City University Description: The Four Leaved Clover is a direct observational drawing using Karisma pencil. Bonnie started the piece by gridding it up, and then drew the outline of the leaves and stem.

Artist: Anya Stewart-Maggs Institute: University of Leeds Description: The words in the image are taken from The Duchess of MalďŹ by John Webster. The quote relates to the misogynistic attitude towards The Duchess of her controlling brothers, the Duke of Calabria and the Cardinal of Aragon.

Artist: Lucy Henshall Institute: University of Edinburgh Description: Lucy was particularly focused on layering and creating a sense of depth that can be visualised in a gaze. The blue eyes are intended to grasp the attention of the viewer, which is then dragged across the canvas.
