H E L LO my name is

THE EDITOR

This is by far the edition of the Editor’s letter I enjoy writing the most... for so many reasons. Long-gone are the mornings of waking up to darkness and having to scrape the ice off your windscreen; summer is almost here! Good riddance to bad weather and HELLO to sunshine, BBQs, festivals, chillin’ in the park or at the beach... and beer gardens, yeah, that’s what I’m talking about! The UK is literally a completely different place in the summer. People stop hibernating, and everyone is so much happier! Keeping things on a positive note, we have got a very special issue this term... Festival ticket giveaways, D.I.Y cocktails, travelling tips, study advice, a Rio 2016 Olympic Games preview and student confessions. Plus, we’ve caught up with BBC Music Sound of 2016 Jack Garratt, superstar DJ Martin Garrix (who’s rated the 3rd best DJ in the world and he’s still a teenager!), Kygo, who’s literally helped transform house music with his incredible sound, and Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills. It doesn’t stop there because we also welcome on board fitness expert David Kingsbury, who’s joining us for the next 3 editions to give you step-by-step advice on getting into shape! (Oh, by the way, he’s the guy who trained Michael Fassbender for the new Assassin’s Creed film AND was responsible for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine transformation among others – so you’re in very safe hands!) So there you have it, we’ve got you sorted for summer with plenty of exciting and helpful stuff, not forgetting the discounts and competitions of course! Enjoy this summer issue, we hope we save you some cash and help you on your mission this term. Whatever you’re up to over the next few months, make this summer one to remember!

Birmingham based Urban/Blues singer-songwriter and rapper Arron Erskine caused a sensation through social media, after having numerous videos go viral. Soon after, Arron headlined the 02 Academy and performed to thousands at many other shows around the country. His first official single entitled ‘Foolin Me’ was released in March 2016 on A6 Records, and just 2 weeks later was played on BBC Introducing. Arron is currently working towards releasing his second single and forthcoming EP. We caught up with the rising star to talk about his experiences, influences, collaborations and new material. For those that don’t know Arron Erskine YET, how would you explain your sound? It’s hard because I don’t think there’s a specific genre which describes my sound perfectly. I call it Urban/Blues.

Elvis fan and if he had his way I would have been called Elvis, but my mum wouldn’t have it. So they settled on his middle name Arron.

Named after the King himself - that’s so cool! We’ve listened to your latest single ‘Foolin Me’ on repeat here at SPG When did you first realise you had a HQ since we first heard it! It’s sooo good! strong passion for music? From an early You must be excited about your future age, as far back as I can remember really. with banging tracks like this…? Yeah Music played a big part in my household I’m really excited! The feedback from ‘Foolin growing up. If my mum didn’t have UB40 playing, my dad had Elvis on! My dad is a huge Me’ is amazing. I have messages daily from

I believe what you put into life you will get out. I’m just here to give it my all and see what the big guy has in store for me.

people about how much they like it. It’s really humbling and makes it worthwhile. It also got played last Saturday on BBC Introducing so it’s all good stuff. You sing and rap about real life experiences which seem to have a strong connection with so many people. Is it important to you, to send a message via your music to your fans? Yeah definitely, I wanna relate to people as much as possible. It’s important to me as that’s the kind of music I like myself too. Morrisey once said “the music that they constantly play says nothing to me about my life”. I relate to that with true feelings. I think music should touch you or remind you of a memory or even take you to the future. I don’t wanna hear about nonsense. I hear that on the daily. You’ve already headlined the O2 Academy which is a great achievement – if you could choose to play at any venue or destination, where would you choose and why? Wembley would be the ultimate dream! To feel the atmosphere there from so many people would be unreal, but I’m also in my element when I’m on a small stage. As long as the drinks are flowing and the people are having a good time, I know I’m doing my job.

When you’re not in the studio making songs, what music do you listen to? I listen to a lot of Elvis, The Blues and I’m a big fan of Leadbelly and John Lee Hooker. Biggie Smalls, Wu Tang, James, The Smiths, Nirvana, the list goes on! I like anything with feeling and meaning really. The Blues seem to cut it for me though. I think I was a Louisiana man in my past life. A whisky, my guitar and the sun shining... That’s a good day to me. Who inspires you? I’d say everyone I just mentioned. I’m inspired daily. It might be a new word I’ve heard or a riff on a guitar I like. I can’t say exactly, just life in general I suppose. I wanna get as much across as I can in my songs about real life. I think so much passes us by. It’s nice to be made aware from time to time. If you could choose to collaborate with another artist, who would it be? There’s too many!!! Off the cuff I’d say Chase & Status and Rudimental. The energy those guys can bring to a track is awesome. I reckon we could make a banger too.

Are you working on any new material at the moment? Yeah my second official single will be released on A6 Records soon, it’s called ‘We’ll See’. I’m really excited to get that out and follow up on ‘Foolin Me’. I’m always What’s your ultimate aim as a musician? working on something. A beat has come in to my head today actually. I had to get the Just to take the ride and enjoy it really. I’m phone out and record myself on voice memo down for anything - I don’t have any do’s or don’ts. I believe what you put into life you will so I didn’t forget it, hahaha, so yeah, once I’ve get out. I’m just here to give it my all and see got that down I’m straight on to the next one. Always thinking, always writing. what the big guy has in store for me.

THE 9AM TRILBY I’m calling this the 9am trilby because it’s a fail-safe style hack for early lectures. Trilby don James Bay seems to rock one every day without fail and we see why – it ups his style creds with very little effort. ALL ABOUT THE KICKS Keeping things simple on top and having the best kicks to boost your look is something Kanye West certainly swears by – it’s a perfect style win for uni dressing.

How To Get Ahead: Over-Deliver! If I had a time capsule that I could send to my unborn child containing just ten bits of advice, this would be in there. If you want to get ahead, learn to deliver more than you are asked to do. University, college, work, it’s all the same. The people who get ahead are almost always the ones who deliver just that little bit extra. So why does this work? Just about everyone you meet at your institution will be aiming to do the bare minimum – and a fair chunk of people don’t even achieve that. If you’re aiming for just one level above – the level of over-delivery – then you immediately put yourself in to a small elite class of student, and these students will get recognised. Teachers and lecturers are supposed to be fair and unbiased – they are not! Like all of us, they are human, and humans all have biases and preferences that are uncontrolled, but also usually unconscious. As a teacher, your sense of job satisfaction comes from seeing your students take your teachings seriously, and then use it to their own benefit. You really enjoy it when your students hang off your every word. If you over-deliver on your work, your teachers and lecturers can’t help but take a shining to you. When your teacher comes to mark your paper, and it’s borderline B/A grade, they will come down on the side of their prejudices...

>

When teachers and lecturers favour you, all sorts of doors can be opened for you. When the teacher has a rare opportunity for only a few students, who will be picked? One of my close friends completed his degree in computer animation (making films like Pixar), and because of his consistent over-delivery on his course, one of his lecturers called him six months later and offered him a job on his team working on Guardians of the Galaxy. My friend could never have guessed his beautiful and thoughtful work would lead to Hollywood, but that’s what it did. Over-delivery opens doors. Our life is made up of habits. Every time you take an action, it becomes just a little easier and automatic to do the same in the future. Every action you take, then, helps form a habit, so learn to foster the habit of over-delivery. Delivering more than you are asked to do is a critical skill for any profession, so I suggest that you build up this skill on your course, so that it is well carved in to your mind by the time you’re ready to work. As an employee or a businessman, giving your boss or clients more than they asked for is the fastest way to grow. See your coursework as practice for any work you might do in the future, and you should put the same love and extra 10% in that you will for your career. Read on for a few suggestions for concrete ways to over-deliver on your course...

>

• Hand in your work in beautiful packaging. If it’s electronic, take time to make the text look aesthetically pleasing. • Take a few hours every week to read ahead in your textbooks. • Talk to your teachers regularly, and ask for their feedback. • Find reading material that compliments your course and get stuck in. E.g. books written on the same subjects by different experts. • Whenever you finish a piece of work, don’t stop. Ask yourself, ‘Now what can I do to make this better?’ • If your course assesses using essays or text (most do), then learn how to write like an expert. It is well said that you get out of something what you put in to it. This is largely true. So I encourage you all to adopt a policy of continuous over-delivery. The passion that you put in to your work will be its own reward, and keeping it up will get you noticed.

How to Impress Your Boss...

LIKE A BOSS By Jack Shannon

So you have aced the interview and got your first job that doesn’t involve a nametag and a polyester tie/ polo shirt. CONGRATULATIONS! Well, it’s a sad fact of life that if you want to keep your shiny new job, you’re going to have to stay on the right side of a dirty four letter word. That’s right, BOSS. Get yourself into a routine

The best way to make sure you’re on time and turning up to work looking vaguely presentable (oh yeah, I forgot to mention - turn up on time and don’t look like you’ve been dragged through a hedge) is to get yourself into a routine. Go to bed at a sensible time, get up with enough time for a shower and eat vaguely sensible meals to give you enough energy. This doesn’t mean living like a monk (unless your new job is as an apprentice monk, in which case you probably should be) but it will help you to focus on your job and get into the swing of 9-5. It sucks not having the freedom of university, but once you get into a good routine you’ll be fine in no time.

Dress well

The look you’re going for is “smart young professional”. This is very different from “soft rock hobo” and “conservative MP”. Rocking up in a pair of ripped jeans and a lumberjack shirt makes it look like you don’t give a flip, dressing like the lovechild of George Osborne makes you look like a weasel and a bit of a try-hard. How are other

>

people at your level dressing? How do the managers dress? Go for something slightly smarter than the other graduates there. Put aside one evening a week to iron your shirts and do your washing. Put Netflix on in the background and chill out. Some people even find it relaxing... Weirdos.

Say hello

If you’re getting a coffee in the kitchen or sharing a lift, master the art of small talk. Try to remember a couple of things about them... 1) Do they have kids? If so, ask how they are. 2) Are they training for a half marathon? How is the nutrition going? Cyclist? How tight are their shorts? This isn’t being a brown noser. It’s just sensible networking and taking an interest.

It’s nice to be important, but it’s important to be nice It’s very important to get on with people you work with. Firstly, because it’s the professional thing to do. Secondly, because you’re spending eight hours a day with these people and it’s worth having them as friends. Thirdly, and most importantly - people talk. People will chat over a mug of tea or outside on a fag break about what they think of the new guy. It’s nothing to worry about, it’s totally normal. Once you’ve been there for a while - they’ll ask what you think of the new guys. It’s the circle of life.

STUDENT FOCUS HAVING GRADUATED FROM ARTS UNIVERSITY BOURNEMOUTH WITH AN ILLUSTRATION DEGREE IN 2013, DAN BEE DREAMS OF ONE DAY OPENING A CREATIVE DESIGN PRACTICE AND ILLUSTRATING FOR THE ECONOMIST NEWSPAPER. HIS PASSION FOR SKATEBOARDING NOT ONLY INSPIRED HIS WORK, BUT LED ON TO SEE HIM WIN AN AWARD FOR A SKATEBOARD DESIGN, WHICH IS NOW BEING SOLD IN THE US. HE ALSO DESIGNED THE GRAPHICS FOR AN OFFICIAL ‘PAUL SMITH JEANS’ T-SHIRT. WE CAUGHT UP WITH DAN WHO TELLS US ABOUT HIS TIME AT UNI AND HOW TO STAND OUT IN A VERY COMPETITIVE INDUSTRY...

SKATEBOARD DESIGNS

First of all, you’re fast becoming a renowned illustrator/designer, so what advice would you give to an aspiring student illustrator/graphic designer today? Make the most of your projects! Getting a good degree is important, but the work that you produce during your course will make up a large part of your portfolio when you graduate - this is what employers and agencies will be interested in. Entering competitions and exhibitions will help to boost your portfolio and get your name out there. Don’t be afraid to experiment, it’s good to have a personal style but don’t let it constrain you. And finally, develop an internet presence - a website or blog is a perfect way to collate and share your portfolio, there are some great

free/cheap websites specifically for creatives such as Squarespace and Cargo Collective. Your CV boasts some great achievements which include designing stuff for Paul Smith, as well as creating artwork for magazines, but what would you say is your greatest success to date? I think winning Board Pusher’s Deck Design contest for my board design ‘the hunter’ would be my greatest success so far. I’ve been into skateboarding ever since I was a kid and my love for board graphics inspired me to pursue illustration. The board went into production as a limited edition, I have one hanging in the studio. The design began life as a doodle on scrap paper and now it’s being sold on a US skateboard website. Being in a very competitive industry such as media, how do you go about making your work stand out from the crowd? It’s important for artwork to be eye-catching, a good colour scheme can lift an image and make it stand out. When I’m working on an illustration I can spend hours trying alternative colour ways, sometimes I’ll go for something completely different and sometimes I end up more or less where I started, but it’s this level of attention to detail which will ensure that an illustration stands out from the rest. What inspires you when you are mapping out your ideas and designing your pieces? It is rare to produce a successful illustration without some element of planning. For me, an idea will start out as a mind map consisting of short sentences and doodles. I do a lot of visual research for my work, depending on the project this can be a variety of media. When the content for the piece is starting to come together, I start to reinforce the composition, looking for a harmony between the elements in the image.

Do you have a favourite artist/illustrator? If yes, who would you say and why? As a student I was fascinated by abstract art and as I progressed though my degree I developed an affection for modernism - in particular the Bauhaus movement. My favourite artist is Vassily Kandinsky, a teacher at the Bauhaus and a pioneer of modernism. I find myself drawn to his disciplined approach to abstraction and powerful

use of colour, as Kandinsky said, ‘Colour is a means of exerting direct influence on the soul’. If you were to have a crystal ball and be able to look into the future, where would you like to see yourself and your work? I would like to open a creative design practice, covering all disciplines of commercial graphics. I enjoy working with practitioners of alternative media, as I learn more from the talented people around me than I ever could from books. Whilst studying at university, how did you find your illustration course, and if you could do anything dierently, what would it be? I enjoyed my degree, I had initially planned to study graphic design and was only made aware of the Illustration course toward the end of my foundation year - it sounded too good to pass up. The course itself was incredibly broad, it gave me the freedom to explore a variety of media. When I started, I worked solely in black fine liner and barely used colour at all, by the time I finished I was working almost entirely with Photoshop and Illustrator. If I could do anything differently, it would be to spend more time in uni, having access to a shared studio with other students is easily taken advantage of but when I moved into my first solo studio I really missed it. Finally, who would you most like to design graphics for, past or present and why? I would love the opportunity to illustrate for The Economist newspaper, they commission some really great illustrators and have a strong visual style which has made the paper renowned for its editorial illustrations and stylish graphics. At seventeen years old, Dutch DJ Martin Garrix was playing sets in some of the world’s biggest clubs and now, at just nineteen years old, he’s ranked third on the global DJ chart, has been championed by the likes of Tiësto and has blasted through our speakers with his chart topping tunes such as ‘Animals’. From having sets at prestigious festivals including Tomorrowland, to hanging out with A-list celebrities, we chatted to him about his ultimate party guests, life on tour and what he really thinks of the UK’s party scene...

So first of all, we heard you were inspired to become a DJ after watching Tiësto perform at the 2004 Olympics when you were only 8 years old! Is this true? Yes that’s true. I saw Tiësto playing on that stage and when I was just about 8 years old and from that moment I knew that was what I wanted to do!

You’re now one of the best DJ’s in the world at only 19! Congratulations, did you ever think you’d be as big as you are? Haha no! I didn’t expect this at all so I’m really grateful for all the support I get from people in the industry and of course my fans. I really couldn’t have done it without them!

Your track ‘Animals’ burst onto the music scene in 2013, but if you had to be an animal for a day, what would you be and why? A bird, so I could fly! DJ’ing has taken you all over the globe from Dubai, to your home nation of the Netherlands, but what we want to know is what location has really been a stand out in your opinion? That’s a hard question. I al-

ways love to play in The Netherlands because my friends and family can join me there but I love the fact that being a DJ gives me the opportunity to see the world. I must say that Coachella festival was one I’ll never forget. I love that festival. And Ibiza is also one of my favourites! And not only that, you’ve visited the UK a few times too, but what do you love most about us Brits? I love the UK! You guys know how to party! It’s kind of the same as in Holland when it comes to festivals. The weather isn’t always festival proof but when you look at the people on the field nobody seems to mind. I love that!

Let’s not forget, you smashed it at Tomorrowland, so two questions, is it really as mad as people say? And can you sneak us in, in your suitcase next time? Haha Tomorrowland is craaaaaazy! You have to experience it yourself! And unfortunately I only take my backpack with me so unless you are really small I think you have to get in the normal way haha. On your Instagram, you have a huge following and are seen snapped with a few of your celebrity mates, but if

you were to throw a party, which three names would be top of your list and why? Haha just three? I think I have to go with Jay Hardway and Julian Jordan because we’ve been friends ever since the beginning. And the third person would be Justin Bieber because it’s just fun to hang with him. You also produced a track with Usher, but which artist past or present, would you have most liked to have made music with? I’m a lucky guy to have worked with a lot of my heroes like Tiësto and Usher but I still have some names on my list haha. I’d love to work with Calvin Harris some day or with Lana Del Rey. I think her voice is sick! Moving aside from dance music, what sort of tunes do you chill out to when you’re not busy? A lot of different kinds of music. For example, I love the new albums by The Weekend, Justin Bieber and Disclosure.

Going back to festivals now, you’ve played at loads! What would you say are your favorite two? Well you mentioned one already... Tomorrowland is definitely one of the best festivals in the world. But I also love to play at Ultra or Coachella or EDC haha. As you can see I can’t really pick just two! And finally, what advice can you give to young people who want to make it big in their chosen industry? Just go with it! Work hard and keep on trying. Be critical of your own work but don’t ever let it hold you back! If you want to do it you can! Well thanks Martin! It has been a pleasure chatting to you and I wish you all the best with your music and going forward! Hopefully we’ll catch you on stage soon. Likewise!!!

As soon as summer creeps up on us, most of our minds turn to festivals. Whether you’re a newcomer or a mud-stained merrymaker, it’s a tempting decision that we face year in, year out. Yet when debating where to attend, for many of us it’s hard to deny our horizons don’t venture past the bright lights of somewhere such as Glastonbury or Wireless. After asking a selection of students at my university, 40% of them said they have been to a local festival and would recommend going to one more than a national. Which would you prefer?

Before you make your mind up, here’s a few pointers in favour of local festivals that might persuade you to think again. The cost and the huge queues come at a fraction of the price. Paying hundreds of pounds to stand in a field is regularly a put off, especially if your student loan is currently being stretched further than the queue to see a headlining act on the main stage. A benefit of going somewhere closer to home means you don’t have to worry about either of these issues and the battling through a stampede of muddy bodies is reduced significantly. Music festivals provide great opportunities for up and coming artists. It can be used as a starting point to get some experience performing in front of a crowd and get yourself recognised – the organisers are usually more than happy to give you a slot. The weather isn’t an issue. Alix Sephton, a student aged 19, said: ‘the best thing about going somewhere local is that it’s not miles from home if you don’t enjoy spending your night in a pop up tent’ – which is true, spending your day covered in mud teaches you to appreciate home a lot more. Finally, there’s no pressure to dress up. Floral skirts, hippie sunglasses and fancy accessories aren’t such a necessity. You can

look completely daft and it’s acceptable because half the people there have seen you dancing around your window in your underwear anyway! It brings the community together. Consider this as a chance to buy a pint for your postman. Or even an opportunity to get to know that stranger at the bus stop who you stand next to every morning but your conversation never stretches past which one of you will step onto the bus first. To add to this, unlike some national festivals, they’re a really family friendly place

- so Grandad, get your wellies out and your glad rags on! Finally, local businesses benefit a lot. Burger vans, small fashion outlets or even if it’s just a pop-up bar, they’re all convenient to have on the day and bring money into the area. And remember, it doesn’t have to be a music festival. Georgia Haysom, a student aged 18, went to an arts festival that was equally as good for local business: ‘it was nice to see the local art work that people try so hard to create. It was full of stalls with food too that was just as popular as the art!’. So maybe this year you might have a harder think before dismissing your community festival, it’s an event that is literally on your doorstep! And if that still doesn’t convince you, think of it as a chance to have a party with all the people you couldn’t afford to invite in the past because your kitchen’s still not finished.

Hi Kyrre! You’ve been crazy busy over the last year and a half, so how are things going for you at the moment? I really have – things are going great at the moment. My first ever studio album is 99% finished and will be out very soon, and my tour has been amazing. I’m playing two gigs in South America - one in Colombia and one in Brazil - and then playing the Main Stage for the first time at Ultra Music Festival in Miami. It’s going to be a fun few months.

From producing some of the best summer sounds of 2015, to getting ready to release his brand new album ‘Cloud Nine’ this year, we spoke to Kygo about studying Economics in Edinburgh, headlining the New York Barclays Centre and living in his dad’s boat house, and here’s what was said...

Many people will know you from the amazing song ‘Firestone’, so what was the inspiration behind the track? Every time we hear it, we get that summery feeling! I had been working on so many remixes and I really wanted to establish myself as someone who could also make original music as well. I’d been playing around with a lot of instrumentals and then received this incredible vocal from Conrad Sewell. We shot ideas back and forth and eventually met up in the studio in LA. We really wanted to create an emotional track that was both meaningful and fun to listen to, and I think we did that. Do you think that this is where the genre ‘Tropical House’ was born? No, not necessarily – I love Tropical House, but really don’t

want to be pigeonholed into only producing music like that. I love all sorts of music like hip hop, jazz, pop and others. Not only do you make brilliant originals, but you’ve remixed some legendary tunes like Marvin Gaye’s ‘Sexual Healing’ too. Which two tracks would you most like to remix from the past year? There’s no way I could just land on two tracks from the past year, there’s been too much out there. I’ve been listening to a lot of Flume’s new music though and there are these two guys out of Canada called Bob Moses who are making some cool stuff. Check them out! If you had to chose one song that you’d only be allowed to listen to for the rest of your life, which track would it be and why?

There is no way I could do one song for the rest of my life! Give me two acts and let me have their entire musical collections The Weekend and Coldplay. Moving aside from music, you actually studied Business and Finance in Edinburgh. Did you fancy yourself as a bit of an entrepreneur when you were younger? And do you think you’d have given Dragons Den a go? I wanted to go into music, but there were so many people who said that no one breaks through, so I studied Economics. I was good at calculations, but I’m not sure I could have pursued it for a career. I believe I would have always found some way to do music, whether that was with me being on stage or behind the scenes. As for Dragons Den, I’m not sure I would have

enjoyed presenting my ideas like that haha. They can be pretty intimidating with all that money on the line! Your album ‘Cloud Nine’ is due out this year, so what we want to know is, what’s your favourite thing to do that puts you on cloud nine, apart from music? Music really takes up 99% of my time at the moment but when I get those small moments, I fly home and spend time with the family. I still live in my dad’s boathouse, which is the perfect spot for me to relax. As a DJ you’re constantly on tour and you recently headlined The Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York! How was that experience? It must have been mad! It was incredible, the show was packed and I brought some special guests like Shaggy, MØ, Parson James and Conrad Sewell along with me for the ride. This was the biggest individual show I had ever done and I’m glad and relieved it worked out so well in the end. The fans seemed to enjoy my new material as well. You’ve also played at the X Games in Aspen, do you reckon you’d be any good at extreme sports yourself? I actually brought a load of friends out there for the games

and did quite a bit of snowboarding with all of them. I’m not bad at water-skiing either. When you’re on tour, you’ve been known to bring out some big name surprises from behind the curtain, but which star, past or present, would you like to collaborate with on stage? It would have been Marvin Gaye but that’s obviously not possible. Living popstar would be Ed Sheeran with him on guitar and me on piano. Can you tell us what three things you can’t live without on the tour bus? 1) My laptop 2) WiFi 3) Some company And finally, seeing as summer is knocking on the door, what music/musicians are you tipping to make a break through this heat season? I really like SAINT WKND and Lemaitre, but once my album comes out you’ll see a few more names who I think will be big in the coming months! Thanks Kyrre! Best of luck for the rest of 2016 and the forthcoming album! Thanks so much! Really appreciate the support.

Festival season is fast approaching, finally! Don’t you just love this time of year? What beats warm weather, making awesome memories with your mates, and listening to top tunes? Err... we can’t think of anything either! So we’ve put together some festival essentials for you that will help make sure your weekend is one to remember...

Tie Dye T-shirt Bring on the tie dye! Nothing says festival fashion more than a tie dye t-shirt and you can buy a cheap, white t-shirt and make your own one at home, so there’s no excuse! Stylish Shorts Ladies – now is the time to bring out the denim hot-pants. We always wear them at festivals and this year is no different. Gents – it’s a pair of canvas shorts for you, but make sure they’re colourful - be bold or go home. One For The Weather Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee the weather, so a rain mac and wellies definitely need to be on your list! Who really cares what these look like? No one, no matter how good looking they are, can pull off a raincoat, and that’s one of the great things about festivals you can wear anything you want without being judged!

A Mini House It goes without saying... You need a tent. But make sure it’s a trusty tent (pop-ups are great). Oh, and if you want to go all out, buy a flag this will help you find your way home without any potential awkward moments, like opening somebody elses tent by mistake at 4am! Snug As A Bug Festivals may take place in the summer, but this is still England, so to ensure upmost comfort, buy yourself a good ol’ sleeping bag. A waterproof one may be useful too for when you spill alcohol everywhere... Luxury Living If you’re a bit of a diva, you may want to consider buying an airbed. If you can’t stand the thought of roughing it for a few days, having one of these will help you cope with the pain of missing your mighty-fine mattress.

Light Up Your Life First up – you need a torch. When you’re searching for something in your tent in the middle of the night, you’ll thank us - trust me. Snap Happy Pictures, pictures, pictures! Capture some hilarious moments with your pals by taking along with you an infamous selfie stick. All Powered Up ...And in order to take all those photos, keep your phone fully charged with a solar charger! If your phone battery is as bad as ours, this is a must-have gadget.

Hygiene Festivals are very crowded places, so for your own sake (and everyone else’s), keep your hygiene on point. Deodorant, body spray, dry shampoo, baby wipes and hand sanitizer are all recommended... And bog roll... Definitely bog roll. Pharmacy Favourites Hayfever and ibuprofen tablets may well come in handy and plenty of sun cream will prevent you from adopting the lobster look! Oh, and to save yourself from being eaten alive, insect repellent is always a good one...

Phew, we made it! Your festival essentials list is officially complete. We’re sure you’ll have an amazing time, so why not tweet us your festival selfies? @TheSPG.

The Beanie As worn by: Meg from Family Guy, lumberjacks, deepsea fishermen. Pros: Warm, snuggly, available in a range of styles. Cons: Swiftly starts to smell like an old sofa.

The Fedora As worn by: Indiana Jones, Johnny Depp, appalling hipsters. Pros: A classic, sophisticated hat. Cons: Largely ruined by Hipsters. Cannot be sat on.

The Cowboy As worn by: Cowboys - Duh. Pros: Rugged, dashing and just a bit dangerous. Cons: Unless you are American, you may look ridiculous.

Baseball Cap As worn by: Rappers, Angelina Jolie, Donald Trump. Pros: Keeps the sun out of your eyes, lots of fun colours, a classic bit of 90’s style. Cons: Chavvy as hell.

Top Hat As worn by: Abraham Lincoln, Victorian gentlemen, that guy from Electric Six, grooms. Pros: Unique, classy, makes you taller by a good two feet. Cons: Literally none. If you wear this hat your life will be fantastic in every way. Except you will always have to duck under doors...

In the last issue of The Student Pocket Guide, we featured alternative rock band Sun Arcana and discovered that apart from their ability to produce fantastic songs, they have produced the most amazing videos to accompany them. Since our last interview with the band, things have gone from strength to strength and not only have their videos been picked up and promoted by VEVO, but they were recently invited to BBC Introducing in Essex for an interview and to perform three acoustic tracks live on air.

with great voices, you will notice the textures coming through, particularly well demonstrated in their latest release ‘Nocturnal’ which was out on the 1st of April. ‘Nocturnal’ is the band’s 4th single release to date and all four singles are available on iTunes, Spotify and YouTube.

It wasn’t the first time I’d heard ‘Nocturnal’ and been totally blown away by it but I was introduced to the track when I was invited to a surprise gig in Southend-on-Sea recently where the band seized the opportunity to try out their set. The contrast of harmonic, Listening to the show (which was melodic atmospheric vocals with aired late March), was a reminder as an alternative rock edge is not a to how well these guys come across style that is new to the band as it’s in interviews. The studio was full of demonstrated in most of their tracks. good humour and banter - especially For me, ‘Nocturnal’ has to be the now that the band has expanded perfect fusion of alternative and dare with the addition of a 4th member. I say it, “progressive” rock and the Jules joined the band a few months sound is unique. At the venue called back as a bass player who has since ‘Club Riga’, it was obvious from the brought a further layer of depth and audience reaction that something creativity to the band. Indeed, the epic was in the making as the four four members not only interview highly accomplished musicians well together but their live perfordelivered an amazing performance. mance was immaculate. Faultless to They have stadium potential. Anyone be honest and if you search YouTube lucky enough to experience this for other videos by the band you’ll intimate gig would have felt certain come across several more acoustic that they were fortunate to have performances including two recent witnessed the start of what is certain videos where Jules’ vocal tones to achieve great heights in the genre compliment Tom’s perfectly. Now of alternative rock. that three of the four highly accomplished musicians are superb singers >>>>

I’m told by the band’s management that there will be a number of festivals and headline gigs to be announced but that the dates listed below are the first of many to come in 2016. I can see that the band have taken many influences from others in their genre such as Radiohead, Muse, Coldplay and even Bring Me The Horizon. Whilst the theme demonstrates consistency in their live performance, some of their tracks are highly emotive, bordering on soulful in their vocals. If I can pass on any advice in this article, all I can say is that if you want to be totally blown away by a memorable live performance of epic proportions, get along to see them now while they are still playing relatively small venues.

And the future for Sun Arcana? I’d say bright. Well I can say that because I’ve been lucky enough to have had a preview of some of their new music to come first hand and I can say that I’m hugely impressed. Yes, some more tracks along the same theme but you can expect some epic surprises and more crescendos thrown in for good measure. I’m certainly looking forward to attending some of the band’s gigs and hearing how their sound develops over the coming months. Social media links below...

Upon the release of his brand new album ‘Phase’, young British musician Jack Garratt is on a surge to cement his place in music as one of the greats. From being backed as the sound of 2016 by the BBC, to winning a Brit last year, we caught up with him to chat music, beards and his first ever single... Hello Jack! You’ve been very busy so far in 2016! How are you? I’m good! Yeah, I’m alright. Very busy and very tired, but I’m tired because of my job and I love my job, and I’m very happy to say that, haha! So, your new album ‘Phase’ came out on the 19th February. For those that haven’t heard it, what can they expect? I’m hoping that people can kind of expect nothing and then in return, get something more from it. I’ve tried to fill it with as many surprises as possible because that’s what I like to do with music; that’s what I love to make. I like to challenge myself as a musician and as a writer, so I’ve put some crazy and

quirky ideas in it that I felt like I needed to make. But I’ve also tried to write as many great songs as I can, and in a nutshell, tried to be the best musician that I can be and make the best music that I can try to make. So people can expect lots of different things and I hope people do expect lots of different things. ‘Phase’ features your new tracks ‘Worry’ and ‘Fire’, but what would you be more worried about, someone shaving your beard or not being able to use social media ever again? I’d be more worried about not being able to use social media ever again I think. I don’t care about the beard, the beard is just hair but social media is a way of connecting with people all over the world and if I wasn’t able to do that, I’d feel very lonely. It’s important to have that connection to people who are listening to all kinds of music; I use it to promote other artists that I like, to talk about music and connect with people.

Talking of your beard, how long did it take you to grow it and do you ever get beard envy of other people’s facial hair? I never get beard envy and I’ve had the beard for a couple of years. Back to your music now and it looks as though it’s going to be a huge year for you! Last year you won Artist of the Year from BBC Introducing, the Critics Choice Brit Award and you’re now being backed as Sound of 2016. How does it feel to be so championed? It feels kind of strange... It feels most elating, but I’m also very wary of it because I didn’t ask for the awards that I’ve received. I’m very grateful that I have received them, but it’s not a competition that I have entered into. There are some people in the UK that assume that it is all tactical and that I’m part of a much darker side of the music industry, and I’ve planned this whole thing, but I’m really sorry to disappoint and tell them that it is actually all bulls**t, and that I’m really surprised that it has all happened. It’s incredible, but those awards are to highlight and promote the importance of new music in the UK. To be involved in that movement is an absolute honour. I use this motto a lot: I’ve not won awards, I’ve just been given a flag to hold. We reckon you’re going to smash it! What has been your favourite part of the year so far? I don’t know yet, as there has been a lot of going around and talking to people about me, but that is amazing because I love talking about my job and I love talking about music. The thing that I’m most excited about this year is about to come, and that is my album! It’s been stewing about for a couple of months and it’s been fermenting, but that’s the thing I’m most looking forward too. And seeing as summer is around the corner, have you got any festivals lined up for 2016 too? Yeah there’ve been a couple of festivals that have been announced! There are a few in Sweden and a few in the UK. I’m doing Wildlife festival and Parklife festival and stuff like that. I’m actually headlining Lost Village festival and it’s going to be full of music that’s great and fun, and I’m amazed that I’m going to be headlining a festival! Hopefully there are more to come.

Is there a dream location you’d love to play at one day? Oh, that’s a good question! I don’t know really! I kind of knocked that one off of the list last year actually, when I sold out Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London which was the venue I saw one of my first shows at. That was incredible! It was a real moment for me and there are moments that come every now and then that actually make me realise that I am actually doing this. That everything is real and it’s not a dream, and that was one of those moments, when I realised everyone was there and they wanted to support the music. I was really overwhelmed. In all seriousness, who has been your biggest musical inspiration and which artist, past or present, would you most like to collaborate with? The music that inspires me the most is the music that doesn’t limit itself in any way. It can be anything and it can make you feel anything; it can sound in any way that it wants to. So, the artists that write that kind of music are the artists that I look up to the most. People like David Bowie and Stevie Wonder; people that take a genre of music that you think you know, and then they turn it on its head and into something you’ve never heard before. There are a lot of artists at the moment that are doing similar things to that, like Little Simz for example. She is one of the most genuine and authentic voices to have come out of music in a really long time. I would absolutely love to work with her. Finally, as a young, up and coming artist, what piece of advice would you give to aspiring musicians today? It’s weird because I don’t feel like I have the right to give any advice. But if I had to, the only advice I would give is to be confident in yourself. And if you’re unsure about the music you’re making or the art that you are producing in any kind of way, there will be a reason for it. It’s important to find out that reason as early as you can because it will help you become a better musician. I only found that out about myself when I had a whole album of music written and ready to go, and I scrapped all of it because I realised that I didn’t like it. I didn’t like the songs I had written and I wasn’t proud of it, and I changed everything about my sound and myself, and I wasn’t happy about the person I was. As soon as I realised that, I realised how I could change myself into the person I wanted to be and the person I needed to be for other people. That’s the only advice I can give, is to be confident in yourself and to gain confidence in yourself. Well thanks for chatting to us Jack! Best of luck for the rest of 2016! Thanks man, I’ll speak to you soon, I’m sure.

INTERVIEW BY JENNA RICH

He’s been entertaining us on the radio for 17 years and we thoroughly enjoyed watching him on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. We caught up with DJ Scott Mills to discuss him turning up to work slightly worse for wear and the most awkward interview he’s had so far…

Hi Scott! You’ve been a successful host on Radio 1 for an impressive 17 years! What’s your secret? How do you keep your show so current and interesting? I can’t go giving away all my secrets! I think the most important thing with radio is to embrace whatever’s going on around it. Social media’s made a really big difference in that way, you can really invite people into radio as a whole experience and it’s always helpful to take everyone’s comments on board. If I did something people didn’t like on a show, I’d know about it pretty quickly and I wouldn’t do it again! What do you think has been your most popular feature so far? Personally, we love Innuendo Bingo! Innuendo Bingo is definitely a big part of the show – who’d have thought essentially spitting on celebrities would go down so well?! We had Alexander and Richard from Pointless play Innuendo Bingo recently and that was a good one, it was a pretty surreal experience! It’s just great fun to watch and take part in, so I’d have to agree with you. You’ve conducted countless interviews during your time at Radio 1. How do you get around asking questions you know people probably won’t want to answer (basically, we want some tips!) I think there are some questions that people just won’t answer, and pushing it sometimes makes the interview really awkward – my tip is don’t push it. You can be cheeky about things and try your luck, but ultimately if they don’t want to talk about something then they won’t. Let’s get down to the nitty gritty - most awkward interview you’ve ever had? I don’t know if I’d say it was the most awkward interview I’ve ever had, but the worst was definitely Steve Coogan. I >

made an off-the-cuff remark, and he just turned. The atmosphere was awful afterwards, and he told me that I’d been disrespectful and that he didn’t want it to go on air. I didn’t mean to upset him at all - I was mortified and in the end I never ran the interview. Is there anyone you haven’t yet interviewed that’d you’d love to tick off your check list? Good question. Can I cheat and say some-

one I’d like to interview again? I’m going through a phase where I want to be best friends with Cheryl Fernandez-Vesini. I even asked Grimmy the other day if he could make us friends, but I’m not sure if it will happen… You used to host the Radio 1 early breakfast show and famously arrived for work one morning rather worse for wear from the Brit Awards the night before,

I was slurring, couldn’t pronounce anything properly… people were texting me saying that they had to pull over because they were laughing so hard.

much to listeners’ amusement! What happened?! Oh that! It’s not happened since, I can tell you that. I basically had too much of a good time. It got to 2:30am and someone pointed out I had to be on air in a few hours, so I went to sleep in the hotel. It took two people to physically wake me up. I shouldn’t have gone on air. I was slurring, couldn’t pronounce anything properly… people were texting me saying that they had to pull over because they

were laughing so hard. About an hour into the show I sobered up and realised I had no idea what I’d said into the microphone. It was awful, but definitely a really good lesson in what not to do as a presenter! Now your show starts at the slightly more social time of 1pm and you have previously done early evening slots too. Do you prefer having an afternoon slot, or do you miss doing the breakfast show? I think >

when you’ve been on air for a long time, you get used to whichever slot you’re on. But doing the afternoon show means you don’t have to get up too early, which is great. You have also appeared on various TV shows including Mastermind, Hollyoaks, Most Haunted and Strictly Come Dancing! So the question on everyone’s lips is… have you done anymore dancing since?! Definitely not in public. I can’t say I haven’t missed the crab costume though... Your colleague Nick Grimshaw has recently finished doing The X Factor. How do you think he did as a judge? You know what, Grimmy is doing an awesome job on the show. He knows a lot about music, a lot about different genres and what works and what doesn’t. He knows a star when he sees one. I loved watching him on the show. Best of luck Scott and thanks for your time! You’re welcome, you too!

@scottmills is on BBC Radio 1 Monday to Friday, 1pm - 4pm.

UR By Heather Drinkwater

You’re eating baked beans. You’re not doing it ironically. You’re doing it because you’re broke. Because of the beans you are starting to smell like an elderly greyhound. But hey, look on the bright side! You’re broke, so even if people wanted to hang out with you, you can’t afford to do anything anyway! Never fear, SPG is here! Your favourite free digital student magazine (Are there others? WHO ARE THEY? HOW LONG WERE YOU HIDING THIS BEHIND OUR BACKS FOR? I THOUGHT WHAT WE HAD WAS SPECIAL!) has some great tips on spicing up (sometimes literally) your beans on toast.

Cheesey Beanz:

About 1 minute before serving, stir a handful of grated cheddar into the beans. Mmmm, cheesy. TIP: Use extra mature cheese. As well as being classier, you need to use less cheese for the same avour - which is better value for money.

Curried Beanz:

Add a teaspoon of curry powder (this stuff never goes off so there is probably some in the back of the cupboard somewhere) to the beans at the start of the cooking for an exotic taste of the far east! DISCLAIMER: SPG takes no responsibility for lack of any exotic avour encountered when adding stuff you nd at the back of a cupboard to your food. TIP: Serve on Naan bread instead of toast. But if you have money for Naan bread, why are you eating beans?

Cowboy style Pork ‘N Beanz:

At the start, cut up some hotdogs and stick them in the beans. Then, add a squirt of BBQ sauce for a great cowboy taste! Just like Billy The Kid ate when he was studying sociology at Portsmouth... TIP: If you can’t afford the electricity or heating bill, eat this around a camppre in your garden. Just like a real cowboy would!

The Little Mermaid Underwater Adventure Full of Fun & Friendship Musical Beanz Extravaganza Multimedia Experience: Drain a tin of tuna and stir into the beans. Done. Job’s a good ‘un. TIP: There is no tip here. I honestly can’t think of a way to make this any more thrilling than it already is.

MEGA BEANZ:

For hearty appetites use twice as many tins of beans. Twice as lling with the same amount of washing up. TIP: Make up 12 batches of beans on toast at once and put them in the freezer. Defrost as you want them, and in only 6 hours and a microwave session later, you will have some freezer-burned beans and some slightly soggy toast. TIP: Pythagoras, the ancient Greek brain-box, believed beans have souls. TIP: Pie-thagoras believed that beans have souls, but only when served with pie and mash.

Summer is almost here and a whole lot of you will be hitting the gym hard. So, with that in mind, we’ve compiled an ultimate list of the superfoods you should be eating to take that much needed shortcut to success, making for the perfect mind, body and attitude in your daily routine.

Walnuts...

You’d be a nutter not to start eating more of these, as walnuts have been proven to boost memory and co-ordination through their inclusion of a high omega-3 fat. Just several whole nuts a day and you could be on your way to having better memory than an iPhone, as it’s certified that eating that amount reaches double your daily dose. Top on salads and throw in a naughty cake, they are a must have in your daily diet.

Avocado... Silky like butter, this green delight has so many hidden gems; you wouldn’t even begin to imagine how good it is for you. From lowering cholesterol and relieving stress, to containing natural fats that’ll satisfy your cravings for ages, the avocado is the most underrated ingredient around. Often found in guacamole and other cultured dishes, this superfood is also amazing straight from the skin with a spoon.

Not only that, but this slippery number has been known to fuel the brain full of energy, making for those early morning lectures to be a doddle after all. Perfect baked, fried or steamed, get some more of this into your gut!

Ingredients – Lime Juice, Sliced Lime Wedges, White Rum, Caster Sugar, Crushed Ice Squeeze 20-30ml of fresh lime juice into a small glass and spoon in one tablespoon of caster sugar. Stir until the sugar has dissolved and then throw in a load of whole mint leaves into the cup. Pour over crushed ice, slot in a lime wedge and stir again; this breaks down the minty leaves and flavours more. It’s time for the alcohol! 50ml (or more if you’re feeling naughty) of white rum gets added and with that, stir AGAIN! Add a straw and enjoy.

Ingredients – WKD Blue, Port, Ice We’ve all had this classic drink in “said pub” and it’s often drunk in jug sized bulks. 550ml of WKD Blue, 100ml of Port, mix it all in with ice in a jug and BAM! A tasty Cheeky V!

Ingredients – Cola, Lime Juice, Lime Wedges, White Rum, Ice This one’s easy... Place some ice cubes into a tall glass, juice a whole lime onto the ice, fill it three-quarters with cola, and then pour in the white rum to the glass top. Stir it all around and garnish with a lime wedge. Tasty.

Ingredients – Limeade, Tequila, Triple Sec, Mint Leaf Grab a large bottle of limeade and slam it in the freezer until it resembles slush. Scoop the limeade into a cocktail glass, add 50ml of tequila, a tablespoon of triple sec and stir until fully blended together. Top with mint leaf to garnish and enjoy in the baking hot sun.

Ingredients – Lemonade, Lime Juice, Lime Wedge, Southern Comfort, Ice Okay, so this recipe may not be as main stream as the others, but it is still tasty and easy as ever. Take a short tumbler and scoop in a handful of ice. Add 50ml of Southern Comfort, top the glass full with lemonade and squeeze over the juice of a lime. Stir, slot in a lime wedge and get the true taste of the 1920’s. Bliss.

Ingredients – Orange Juice, Cranberry Juice, Vodka, Peach Schnapps, Ice Half fill a long glass with ice; pour in 50ml of vodka, 25ml of peach schnapps. The rest is easy... Grab your juices and you guessed it, pour equal measures of them in until your glass is full. Give it a stir, throw in a straw and slurp away.

Ingredients – Coconut Milk, Pineapple Juice, White Rum, Ice Start off by putting a handful of ice in a high ball glass and pouring in 50ml of white rum, and then 25ml of coconut milk. Give it a stir around and proceed to fill the rest of the glass with fresh pineapple juice. Stir around again and you’re ready to drink! Why not serve this in a hollowed out pineapple for a Caribbean twist?

Time to

Travel ‘What are you going to do when you have finished university?’ Owwwh. Those painful 11 words, said in that very order, by everyone and anyone. Your parents will ask you. Auntie Sandra will ask you. Your tutor will ask you. Jim down the pub will ask you. You will also ask yourself. Firstly in your head and then out loud, repeatedly until you decide to close down every tab in your internet browser and nap for the rest of the afternoon. Graduate schemes? Recruitment agencies? A permanent position at your current part-time job? But hang on one moment. You are tired, fed up and you have been working hard for what seems like an eternity. Is going into a full time job straight from your degree always the best option? Have you considered travelling? Taking time out to go travelling has become more popular than ever. More and more people each year succumb to wanderlust (the strong desire to travel and explore the world). So, what are the benefits of travelling? Whether it be for a few weeks or a few years, here is why you should consider going travelling...

Make new friends

When travelling, you will undoubtedly make lots of friends. Often, friends for life. These friends give you advice on where to go and how to stay safe when you are thousands of miles away. These friends prove to be invaluable to your experience. Also, knowing people from different places means you can visit them on your next trip away!

IT LOOKS GREAT ON YOUR CV

Employers know that there are lots of transferable skills to be acquired through travelling. They also appreciate that it makes you a well-rounded and cultured individual. Double points if you volunteer whilst travelling as it shows you have compassion and great work ethic. Experiencing different cultures and experiences also makes you more creative and able to think of new ideas more easily.

YOU CAN LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE Even if you flunked your French GCSE, travelling will help you learn different languages without even realising it. Learning the basics of where you are visiting and being able to talk to the locals is extremely rewarding.

YOU’LL HAVE GREAT STORIES TO TELL

Whether you toured Europe by train or trekked through the jungle, visited Fiji’s most beautiful waterfalls or sailed down the Nile, all the experiences you have will make great stories for when you get back. Warning: Don’t brag too much, or your friends will begin to hate you.

LEARN LESSONS FROM DIFFERENT CULTURES If you have stayed in the same place all your life, it is likely you will mix with similar minded people and share a similar perspective on the world. Travelling teaches you that there isn’t always just a right and wrong way of doing things. It also helps you move away from any pre-formed judgements and replace them with real life experiences.

IT’LL MAKE YOU MORE INDEPENDENT

Yes, going to university was a big step in becoming more independent. But, going travelling to an unknown country really stretches you as a person. You are in a place you have never been before, maybe on your own or with a small group of people, thousands of miles from everything you have known. There are new languages to learn, cultures to understand, people to meet and food to try. When things are difficult, you learn to deal with it, instead of getting the train back home with a roast dinner and your mum waiting for you.

YOU’LL LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF

Travelling is the perfect opportunity to escape the stress of everyday life and think about all the important stuff. You learn a lot more about who you are as a person, as you bravely take a leap into a new adventure. All those big adult decisions that we need to make are definitely a lot easier when on a beach in New Zealand, watching the sun go down whilst sipping a bevvy out of a coconut shell.

THE TIMING IS PERFECT

Now is the best time to go travelling. You have no responsibilities and the choice to do whatever you want with your life. If you get the travelling bug when you’re in your 40’s, it may be a lot more difficult to pack all your things and fly to Thailand for a few months. You might have children to look after or be at a crucial stage in your career. Travelling is definitely a lot easier before you get on that career ladder and settle down.

Kiersten gave up her career in corporate finance to become a world traveller. Since then, she’s travelled to 50 countries knocking some big adventures off her bucket-list. We caught up with The Blonde Abroad, just before she was about to set off on another adventure… Hi Kiersten! We saw you’ve been very busy on your travels recently... Yes! I’m just in the middle of unpacking and repacking for my next trip actually. For people who don’t know, you gave up a job in corporate finance to follow your dreams of travelling the world? Was this a difficult decision to make? Yes that’s correct! Leaving my career in finance was difficult, but then not difficult at all. I knew I wasn’t happy and needed to be doing something else, but it was a bit scary to leave a career I had worked so hard for, and I had bills to pay.

I was always a creative person and passionate about photography and story-telling, so it was a natural transition into blogging so that I could share my journey with other women and to inspire them to follow their own dreams. Your blog is now extremely popular and has won many awards, but what would you say to someone who wants to start up a blog? My advice is to stay true to what you’re passionate about - if you are thinking about starting a blog, or taking your blog to the next level, I encourage you to really find your niche and

something that you would be interested in blogging about five years from now. It’s funny that there are so many parallels in just about every industry, but as an entrepreneur or for any new business owner, there’s a saying that it takes at least 2 years for a new business to become profitable. But that success is not guaranteed. I imagined my blog in that way where the first 2 years were going to be challenging and that I would potentially fail. And by fail I mean nobody would read my blog. I worked my butt off, learned from the criticisms as well as the compliments and was open to evolving my brand

to better connect with my audience. There’s no sugar-coating the experience I had in my first 2 years blogging, or the amount of unpaid time I put into my brand. My advice is to clearly define your goals. Moving aside to your travelling now and you’ve visited over fifty countries in five different continents. Where has been the place that you want to return to the most and why? One of my favourite cultural experiences was in Cambodia. I got to stay out in a rural area, explore the countryside and really connect with the locals. I also had the opportunity to volunteer at the Epic Arts Centre in Kampot, which was developed for local disabled children as a haven to establish their own community and receive artistic education. It was an amazing experience all around! I also would love to return to Southeast Asia and Australia, because that‘s where I took my first big solo trip over 4 years ago. Is there anywhere in the world that you don’t want to visit? Actually, not that I can think of! Of course, there are places I wouldn’t visit at this time because of unrest and out of concern for my own safety. But, otherwise, no.

What advice would you give to someone travelling on a budget and what location would you begin at? I think that almost any destination can be travelled on a budget - it’s all about planning and priorities. If you’re more passionate about history, then skip the bike tour, and pay the museum admission fees. If you’re an adrenaline junkie, go skydiving and skip the museums. Just be sure to know what you want to do so you don’t spend any unnecessary money! South America and Asia have always been awesome budget

destinations for backpackers and student travellers. I also loved Iceland and Panama! Back to your own adventures now, and you’ve seen some amazing sights as we can see through your Instagram. What has been your scariest encounter so far? Just a few months ago, I was able to take a trip to China. Those who have followed me for a while may know that I am deathly afraid of heights. But at some point during the trip, I agreed to go to the top of Mt. Huashan, and take the “deadliest hike in the world”. It was terrifying

and exhilarating at the same time! Also on your site, you showcase your foodie experiences and festivals too, so what’s the best meal you’ve had from over the world? I’d have to say my favourite destination for food and wine is the Istria region of Croatia. They have the most amazing cuisine of fresh seafood and farm to table ingredients, along with world-class olive oils and wines. So delicious! Talking of food, how do you maintain health and looking so glamorous when you travel? I wish I could say that I had a plan, but I really just try to make as many healthy choices as I can, while still enjoying all the local dishes of wherever I am! I love bread, but also really enjoy fresh fruit and veggies. It’s all about balance when you’re constantly eating on the road. Finally, if you were to get stranded on an island on your travels, which one person would you choose to have with you and what three things would you choose to have, if you could only have three? From a logical standpoint,

I guess I’d want a survivalist on the island with me! Maybe Bear Grylls or one of the guys from that Dual Survival show. Bonus points if they’re good to look at. I have no idea what I’d choose to have. But, let’s say, a bottle of rum, a barrel of sunscreen and a satellite phone ;) Keep up-to-date with Kiersten’s travels here: www.theblondeabroad.com

After the renowned success of the Olympics on our home soil back in 2012, the games have now shifted to a more exotic and heat induced climate, and that being Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Often remembered for its vibrant and colourful culture, Rio is going to showcase a carnival of events over 32 venues which have been spread over another four regions; Barra, Copacabana, Maracana and Deodoro.

Get your reminders at the ready and your TV boxes set to record because the Olympics in Rio is going to be getting underway from Friday 5th August, right through to Sunday 21st August 2016. It’ll be guaranteed drama, adrenaline and entertainment, but the fun doesn’t stop there because the Paralympics are set for the 7th-18th September too.

Following up from where the brave Brits left off back in London 2012, this summer we’ll see some new stars come through, as well as some familiar faces in the world of sport. The national gem, Jessica Ennis-Hill is looking to make a storming come back in the heptathlon after a year out in 2012 and twenty-three year old Katarina Johnson-Thompson is seeking to make her mark in the same event also. Mo Farrah will be running for gold in Rio this year and the famed marathoner is posing stronger than ever after his multiple wins in 2015! Let’s just hope Mo can go the distance.

Sports personality of the year last year and once champion of Wimbledon, Andy Murray can definitely expect to conquer the world of tennis in August 2016, and we don’t think the court star will come home empty handed. And finally, how could we forget the golfing great that is Rory McIlroy? Q&A

In the midst of the build up to the 2016 Rio Olympics, Nicola Adams has been hard in training to become a double gold medallist. From being awarded a prestigious MBE and meeting the queen, to high-altitude training in Colorado, we spoke to her about chilling out, life on TV and her favourite boxer... Hi Nicola! How is everything going for you at the moment? Yeah, everything’s going really well! Training hard and looking forward to Rio! As you’ve mentioned, it’s the Rio Olympics this year! Are you feeling ready for another Olympic gold? Yeah, definitely! That’s my main aim, to hopefully become a double Olympic champion. Brilliant! Have you got any tips for who could be coming out on top in Rio for Britain this 2016? I think probably Jessica Ennis and Mo Farrah.

We saw on Twitter that you’ve been training in America with the US boxing team in a 10 day training camp. Did you get any good inside information on the opponents? Not really because that’s not what training camps are for. It’s more about learning how the opponent performs in the ring. All in all, it was a really good experience. It’s the first time I’ve trained at altitude and you don’t expect it to affect you as much as it does, but it was really good. Cool! Moving aside from your training, you’ve been hard at work on TV with your ad

campaigns too! Do you think television will be the career for you after boxing? Yeah, possibly! I’d love to do a bit of acting and a bit of TV presenting. We actually read online that you used to play extras in soaps, so what we want to know is, what show would you most like to have a lead role in and what sort of character would you like to play? Oh, good question! I’m not sure to be honest. I do like ‘The Walking Dead’, so I’d definitely like to be one of the characters on there. And also, you said in another interview that UFC may be a possible career after boxing! So, what do you think to that? Yeah, I like the sport. I think it’s exciting, but I’d definitely have a lot to learn. I wouldn’t like to rule it out. So, when you’re not training and in the ring, how do you spend your down time? Going to the movies, seeing my friends and family and playing the Playstation.

Nice! What’s your favourite game? At the moment, it’s Call Of Duty.

Q&A And what’s the one thing you can’t live without? Ohhh... My Playstation! Not only have you got an Olympic gold, but you’ve also got an MBE! How was that experience meeting the queen? Oh, it was unbelievable! I was really nervous actually. I wasn’t really sure what to expect and there are a quite a few rules on what you have to do, and what you’re supposed to say. It all went really well and it was really nice to speak to the queen. Wow! What did she say? She said well done for what I did in the games and that she was looking forward to seeing me in Rio! Finally, back to boxing now and the British collective is looking better than ever! What we want to know is who would you back

if Haye fought Joshua? That would be a tough one! I’m not sure to be honest. They’ve both got really good qualities. Josh is really tall, really range-y and really strong, and then you’ve got David Haye. He’s short, shocking, and powerful and he’s almost like a Mike Tyson fighter. It would be a tough one to call.

Have you got a favourite boxer who you aspire to? Yeah, Muhammad Ali! Well, thanks Nicola! It’s been great chatting to you! Best of luck with training and the Olympics! Thanks, no problem!

David is best known for his work with Hugh Jackman as the Wolverine and Jennifer Lawrence as Rogue in X-Men Days of Future Past.

Part 1

Upper Body Session s

In order to get in shape there are a few key factors to consider 1) Effective training, 2) Effective nutrition and 3) Effective recovery. In part 1, we will cover two training sessions to get the most out of your time in the gym. They are to be performed twice each per week. So, you might be wondering to start with what weights to use...

Warm up sets Before doing any working sets, I suggest doing warm up sets. These are done by recreating the desired movement exactly with a light weight or no weight and progressively warming up so that when you start the working sets your muscles are ready to go. If your first movement is heavy squats for example, I would suggest doing 3-4 warm up sets, which progressively get heavier, until you reach your working set weight. During these warm up sets, I would generally aim for 8-12 reps of the movement. When moving onto the next exercise, your body may already be warm but I suggest performing another warm up set, prior to the next working set, to ensure you are comfortable with the movement.

5 rep max test A 5 rep max test determines the heaviest weight you can lift for 5 reps. For 5 rep max tests, I suggest using the warm up principle discussed above followed by a further 3-4 heavier sets, where you gradually increase the weight but decrease the reps to 2-3 reps, until you have an idea of what your 5 rep max would be.

Strength sets (1rep-7reps) For strength sets if you are not following a percentage system I would like you to aim for each set to be a heavy working set. If the plan is 5x5, I want 5 heavy sets of 5 reps. These are not done at your absolute maximum weight for 5 reps but a weight you will be able to achieve the full 25 reps at. I suggest a similar warm up to the 5 rep max test shown above.

Strength endurance (8reps-15reps) For these sets there are two ways to approach them. Using 4x12 as an example, you can either pick your maximum weight, lift it 12 times and then, because it is unlikely you will be able to do 12 reps again, reduce the reps on the later sets. It may look like 12 reps, 11 reps, 10 reps, 9 reps for example. Alternatively, you can choose a lighter weight that you can lift for the full 4 sets of 12 reps. For these I would like you to choose the first option. But I would like you to make a note of the exact weight and use it week after week until you are able to perform the full 4x12 rep sets. Once you have achieved this, increase the weight and repeat the system.

High rep sets (15reps +) For these sets pick a weight that you max out on repetitions within 1 or 2 reps either side of the target rep. For example, if you are aiming for 15 reps I am happy for you to max out at 13-14 or 16-17 reps. If the weight is too light and you achieve more than 17 reps then continue the set but increase the weight on the next set.

BUY COOKING UTENSILS We hate to burst your bubble, but having a takeout every night for tea unfortunately just isn’t feasible - you’re definitely going to need the basics. By this we mean things like saucepans, chopping boards, glasses and cutlery, etc. BUY EVERY COOKING UTEN SIL YOU SEE No, you haven’t turned into Gordon Ramsay overnight, we’re sorry to break the news. You are average Joe who has probably hardly ever cooked before, so do not act like you’re going to apply for The Great Britsh Bake Off and purchase everything you need in order to make a banging cake. Do you really need a whisk, a mixing bowl, a measuring jug and a set of scales? No you do not.

BUY WINTER CLOTHING ESSENTIALS Uni starts in September, so you may have just been to Magaluf and experienced 30 degree heat, but during your first semester, you’re going to be wanting your thermals. Ok, thermals was a bit much, you’re not a grandparent yet, but make sure you take your dressing gown, slippers and numerous jumpers. BUY MORE SUMMER CLOTHES It’s summer and the holiday season. All we can think about is going away and soaking up the sun. We want to go in Primark, raid the aisles and have a smug look on our face when we go to the till and get the whole lot for under £50. However, taking your summer clothes to uni isn’t needed when you’re going to be there from September-December. They’ll be a nightmare to pack and you won’t end up wearing any of it. Refrain people, REFRAIN.

BUY CLEANING PRODUCTS Some cleaning products are essential... toilet cleaner being one of them, especially if you share a bathroom. No one wants unpleasant rumours going round about how they left the loo looking, do they? Air fresheners are also good - you want your room smelling as fresh as a daisy for when your parents come to visit. Oh and washing up liquid (unfortunately) is another necessity... so long, beloved dishwasher. BUY TONNES OF HOME ACCESSORIES Are you living at Buckingham Palace? No. It’s nice to keep the place clean, but when it comes to purchasing loads of ‘home touches’, do yourself a favour and save your money. We guarantee after a week of being at uni, you’ll be far too concerned about spending time with your new flat mates to even think about how ‘perfect’ your flat looks... and you’ll only spill alcohol all over that posh new ornament anyway, which guess what, will need cleaning!

BUY READING MATERIAL Email one of your lecturers or your course leader and ask them if there’s any books that you definitely need to buy. Purchase the essential ones and do a bit of reading before you start your course. Geeky? Admittedly, but there’s no harm in being ahead of the game. BUY THE WHOLE OF WH SMITH You want to be prepared for starting your course, so that means purchasing books, stationary and folders, but do you need ten thousand pens? I mean, seriously? And do you really need sellotape and paperclips? You know, those things you buy ‘just in case’ you ever need them... Oh, and don’t even think about buying every single book on your reading list - you can always visit the library and borrow the books for free.

BUY A DECENT LAPTOP You may already have one and in that case, you’re sorted, but just make sure it’s in good working condition and you’ve done all the necessary updates. The last thing you want is finding that that 2000 word essay you finished has just disappeared. BUY A TV You’re most likely going to be living in a tiny uni room, so a big TV is not what you need. Instead, save your money and stream programmes on your laptop. You should be spending time with your flatmates anyway, so not having one will encourage you to be more sociable.

How to

hing Doing the Was

By Jack Shannon

Ok, I’m not going to lie to you. Like graduating, getting out of bed and finding a job - the washing is something you are going to want to put off as long as possible. However, it does need doing eventually! Like YouTube distracting you when you have an important essay due, we are going to help put that off for as long as possible. WEAR SOCKS AND PANTS INSIDE OUT

This is just a classic. Turn these items inside out, and then back to front. That’s four times the wear a “normal” person gets from their underpants. That’s Maths. And you can’t argue with Maths. You know what chicks dig? Maths. Back of the net.

SUITS DON’T NEED TO BE WASHED

Wool or wool blend suits don’t need to be washed. They need to be dry-cleaned occasionally, but that’s different. You might look like a hobo, but a classy hobo.

FANCY DRESS IS FOR LIFE, NOT JUST FANCY DRESS PARTIES

We are kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel here guys, but as a student I reckon you have at least a few fancy dress outfits in the wardrobe. The ladies love an eccentric and nothing says free spirited thinker who plays by his own rules like turning up to a lecture on Anglo-Saxon migration theory dressed as Captain Hook.

FEBREZE

This is obvious. If you haven’t coated your clothes in Febreze yet then you are just doing it wrong and by “it”, I mean life.

A FRIEND IN NEED IS A FRIEND INDEED

Borrow your friend’s clothes. Say you are thinking about buying a similar style, but want to try them out first. Basic human decency says you should return them clean, so in the long term this isn’t a good strategy to avoid doing the washing, but it should at least buy you a couple of extra days.

GET A JOB

Well, not forever obviously. But if you get a job, they often give you a uniform. And that means more clean clothes! KA-CHING!

BECOME A SUPER-MODEL / ACTOR

They get given free clothes or costumes to wear all the time! Imagine the admiring glances you will get turning up to seminars dressed in Jean-Paul Gaultier. Or a Henry VIII costume after starring in the BBC’s latest costume drama.

ANONYMOUS CONFESSION

I Fancy Your Dad And I Can’t Deny It

What an amateur move it was to invite me over to your family’s house in the last Christmas break. We’d been together just over two months after hitting it off in Freshers’ 2015 and we’d had a such a fabulous relationship... that was until 2016 kicked in. I’ll never forget the moment we left halls, hand in hand to fetch train down to Cambridge. You and I were in a world of happinethe ss; a bond so strong, it was as though we’d walked straight off of the set of 50 Shades. The streets were glistening with sparkling decorations ready for the festivities to begin and we rocked up to your house door, and that’s where it all began with a knock, knock, knock... And there he stood; the man of my dreams. I immediately slipped the grip of your hand as though it was tarnished in radioactive oil because my eyes beheld a man mountain that could only make my knees shake. It was your dad and I think he is probably, and always will be, the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen. Naughty and forty I used to tell myself; his age here was simply a number. Throughout the whole two weeks, I couldn’t keep a single thought or eye off of him. Every day I would go out of my way to give him a cheeky hello or flirt, and I have no regrets at all. When we were washing up, I even did the ‘accidental’ drop and up of the dish cloth. And, I may have even stared at him whenpick slept on Boxing Day. From the way he carved that turkey, to he he fitted himself in that skin tight, beige turtle neck your dad how was a pure fitty. Sometimes I wish you never took me to your house last Christma and maybe we’d still be together now, but that January back at uni,s I couldn’t even look at you the same without salivating over dad’s image. Damn, I may even get a train booked now to giveyour the sexy silver fox a visit... I have him on Facebook after all. I would be sorry, but your dad is simply hotter than you and I don’t think you could ever pull off the dad bod the way he does.

Whether you love it or you loathe it, street art and graffiti are on the rise and with that, there is no denying the talent behind the masterpieces. From mesmerising murals on bedroom walls, to blessing subways and brick-work with larger than life beauty, we spoke to a legend of the industry known as Gnasher and here is what we uncovered about 21st century street art...

How did you start out as an artist and what inspired you to pick up the spray can to create your murals? I started out many moons ago in 87. I started because I was rubbish at skateboarding, plus it was very popular at the time. Could you tell us the difference between street artists and graffiti artists? Graffiti is predominately letter based with a few characters, all painted freehand with spray cans, and street art came along later and uses stencils, paint brushes, and usually characters... I sit in the middle as I paint characters freehand with a spray can. You’ve created some amazing pieces around our city and the UK (a favourite being the Game of Thrones piece), but what would be your dream mural to create? Anything Star Wars related. Famous artists such as Banksy and Shepard Fairey use their art to get powerful messages across, so why do you think they do this? I guess they want to voice their opinions... I generally don’t get too deep and political. Could you explain the implements that have been put in place that concentrate where and when you can’t create street art? Nowadays, at least there are places to paint, there wasn’t back in the day... Maybe if there was I wouldn’t have got into trouble. Do you ever feel the need to create a piece on a wall that isn’t allowed to be sprayed on? No, my wife would kill me.

What are your thoughts on when people determine street art as ‘vandalism’? I don’t think people deem it vandalism as much as back in the day. Often people deface and ruin murals. Why do you think they do this and are there any rules as to when someone can go over a fellow artist’s piece? Back in the day the rules were, if you couldn’t better it then don’t go over it... Now with legal designated areas, people just want to express themselves, be it just ruining what’s there. Back to Banksy again and he opened the temporary exhibition Dismaland last year, how important is it that the Street Art movement moves forward with trends like this? To be honest, I have no time for Banksy... Dismaland looked cool, but I doubt I’d have ever gone there. How do you see the future of Street Art within the next ten years? People will always want to express themselves, so it might not be street art or graffiti, but some form of urban art.
