EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
FOALS made their long awaited return to the big time this year with the release of their critically acclaimed third record, ‘Holy Fire’. Making it a hat-trick of consecutive top tens, the milestone album saw the Oxford quintet reach the dizzy heights of number two in the UK charts earlier this spring, with lead singles ‘Inhaler’ and ‘My Number’ showcasing the band’s ability to produce accessible pop music, whilst also maintaining a truly inimitable sound and identity. We caught up with bassist, Walter Gervers, who hinted at the fact this could be their most confident collection of work yet, and also gave slightly off-track insights into the personalities of his fellow band members... Animal style!
Hi Walter! How has 2013 been for you so far? I’m guessing very good... Haha. Yeah, I suppose so. It has been very good! We haven’t had time to stop and take stock yet since we started in January, though. We spent some time in Australia earlier on in the year for a few festivals in the intense Australian summer heat, then came back for a UK tour in snow and rain, which was pretty weird! We’re really pleased to have the record out; it’s exciting to see it out there in the big wide world but at the same time we’re always quite wary of getting too over excited. We’re back where we feel most comfortable now, which is pretty much being back on the road, playing shows and getting on with it.
I didn’t realise the extent of your North American tour coming up soon, it’s massive! Yes. It’s full on. It’s quite scary actually! Until we’ve chipped away at that I think we’re going to feel quite anxious. Would you say it’s the longest or potentially hardest tour you have been on as a band? In terms of the amount of dates, yeah. In terms of comfort, it should be alright. Luckily there is a tiny little break in the middle of it, which I think is after seven weeks, where we come home for a couple of days, but even that’s full of promo, sessions and a show in Northern Ireland. All in all it’s about eleven weeks of touring out there which is pretty terrifying! We’ve toured America a few
times now. Each time we go back there, the venues get a little bit bigger a lot of the time, which is great, but you can’t really tell what you’re going to be doing each time you go back. We will have fun though, that’s the main thing! Do you prefer to return to venues you have played before and feel comfortable performing at? Yeah, definitely. There’s like a real nice familiarity with a place where you’ve had a good show before. Returning to somewhere like that can be awesome. As you mentioned earlier, you went to Australia at the start of the year. I imagine the festival scene out there has quite a
>>
heavy party atmosphere to it. Did you guys let loose a little bit whilst you were out there? Yeah, it really has! There are a lot of angry red neck Australians around. Haha, no they’re lovely really. Australia Day, in Sydney, in 46°C heat, with lots of red face drunken Auzzies was quite daunting. But we had some great parties out there actually, it was really cool. We do pretty well in Australia within reason, so it was quite a good thing for us to go and do. I was checking out the official video for your new single ‘Late Night’. It’s quite striking; quite explicit! Haha, yeah, it is isn’t it! Did you guys have much input in the direction of it? Yeah it was great fun. We filmed it out in Romania. It was kind of a combination of Yannis and Nabil’s [director] thoughts. I suppose we wanted to do something that was a short story. We’d never really done anything like it before in a video; it’s incredibly symbolic, with the full circle of life going on. It was an opportunity we jumped at really. In terms of the lyrical messages, what is the record about? It’s difficult for me to say, I can’t really express what Yannis lyrics are putting across with any justice. What I can say is that this time round, it feels like he is singing from his heart and his soul a little bit more as opposed to previous records which were all about imagery or painting pictures. It feels like we’ve got more of an audience now, and he is more comfortable talking about his emotions and relationships between people. In terms of specifics, a lot of the stuff though is still quite open ended. Our songs are quite often not about specific things, but more what Yannis is feeling when we’re back in Oxford in our dark, little studio! It’s whatever comes to him first, and then he just expands on it. That’s certainly what happened with ‘Late Night’.
Obviously you’re three albums in now, and three consecutive top tens in the album chart. That must feel good! Yeah, yeah it does. That kind of stuff we never would have dreamt of when we started this band. All of the things like that are amazing and feel really good, and fill us with confidence, but at the same time it’s not really what we’re about; we try not to dwell on that sort of stuff. One of the things that gives the band its longevity is that we don’t really aim for those sort of things. But it is nice to see that people who were into our band are still there and are enjoying us progressing and maturing. A foal as we all know is a baby horse, but what animal would each band member be and why? I would probably be a sloth. Everyone is always teasing me that I am very slow and long limbed. Yannis is a little tazmanian devil, you know, like an angry, burly sort of creature. Edwin we quite often say is a bit like Eeyore, a kind of slow donkey. Jack is like a meerkat or a ferret. What about Jimmy? Jimmy is a bird with ruffled feathers, like a crow. Not the nicest of birds, a crow?! Ah no, but very wise! And very loyal. Haha, I feel like I have learnt something new today. There you go! We’ve had a couple of questions sent in on Facebook and Twitter. Charlotte asks, “What is your favourite song to play on stage?” At the moment, it’s Providence. It’s so satisfying to play. When we wrote it, we imagined ourselves playing it live and how people would react to it, if that makes sense? When I see it on the set list, I’m like, “yep, here we go!” Curtis asks, “How excited are you to play your new material on the main stage at Reading?” Very, very! And slightly nervous! We’ve never done that before at Reading, we’ve always been in tents. It’s always a real high point of our year so we try not to think about it too much because we might get too excited, too worried, or both!

TENT TROUBLE Fact: Whoever came up with the phrase, ‘like finding a needle in a haystack’, was trying to find his tent at Reading Festival at one in the morning. Even with a good sense of direction, a clear head and a flagpole sticking out of your porch, tent hunting is not for the light hearted. Before embarking on your search, remember to bring a compass, a hearty lunch and a pack mule, just to be sure.
DRINK DISASTER We all know what it’s like... You’ve been standing around for hours, both tired and hungry, but it’s all worth it because you’ve finally got to see your favourite band! At least, you saw about two minutes of them before a pint of beer hit you square in the face, leaving you completely drenched for the rest of the set. Still, no point moping about it – why not wear a waterproof poncho to minimize the chances of getting wet?
TOILET TRAGEDY Easily the worst thing about festivals is the toilet situation. There are several contributing factors to this, from the smell, to the sight, to the fact that whoever used the stall before you seemed to aim everywhere but the actual toilet. But there will always be that moment when you look round after doing your business and...dun, dun, dunnn...the toilet roll is nowhere to be seen! It truly is the stuff of nightmares. Remember people, always keep a roll handy!
MUDSLIDE MISHAP When you’re festivaling in the UK, it’s usually a safe bet that you’re going to see a large amount of mud. When this happens, you have two choices; 1. Pack wellies, waterproofs and run at the first sight of trouble; 2. Embrace that big pool of brown goop! Dive in, go for a slide, have a mud fight - the possibilities are endless. If you’re going to get muddy, you might as well make the most of it!

Stooshe’s outspoken sense of style and unruly wordplay has attracted a legion of fans and firmly established them as one of music’s hottest new artists. The rising girl band secured two Top 5 hits in the shape of ‘Love Me’ and the Gold-certified ‘Black Heart’ back in 2012 which were followed up by nominations for Best Newcomer at the MOBOs as well as Best British Single at The Brits. We caught up with one third of the trio, Courtney Rumbold, who spoke to us about her varying hairstyles, bowling technique and the all important release of their debut album... Hey Courtney, are you alright? I’m good thank you, how are you? I’m very well thanks! I have to ask... What hair style are you sporting at the moment? OK. Right now, I’ve got a silvery, grey, not a quiff but an up and back old-school Elvis comb over! You’ve got rid of the blue and pink dye from earlier on this year then? Yeah, it’s always good to change and switch it up! I’ve gone back to short hair now as well.

At StudentJob, we have tons of fantastic vacancies but we’ve realised that they’re no use unless you are prepared for the potential interview. With this in mind, we put together a few tips which should help you out. So, have a read, have a think and try them out!
1 2 3
Be on time
Always remember, you only get ONE chance to make a FIRST impression. Arriving a little bit early will not only give you time to relax and gather your thoughts, but also create a good first impression.
Do some research
The company you manage to get an interview with will probably not be the only one you have sent an application to; the last thing you need is to get it mixed up with another! Doing some research beforehand will help you feel more relaxed and also impress those who are asking the questions.
Smile
OK, it’s not as simple as just smiling, but doing this will give off the impression that you’re enthusiastic, eager to work and sociable. You don’t want to look like The Joker, so don’t overdo it, but try and remain as upbeat and positive as possible.
4 5 6
Practice
Think of some potential questions you might get asked and come up with the answers in advance. This will make life a lot easier once you go into the interview. That’s not to say you should regurgitate everything back like a robot, but you should have more structured responses to the questions being asked, should they come up!
Dress appropriately
Dressing appropriately for an interview is incredibly important. Check out the company online before you go to grasp an idea of their dress code. If you’re still unsure about what to wear, then you’re safest bet is going smart. The smarter you are, the more likely you are to make a good impression.
RELAX!!
We all know how nerve-racking interviews can be, but just remember, IT’S NOT THE END OF THE WORLD IT’S JUST A JOB INTERVIEW!! Get there early, sit down, gather your thoughts, have a drink and go in there with your game face on.
We hope you guys have found this useful, but don’t forget, these tips are only relevant if you’ve got a job interview. So, go online today, register at www.studentjob.co.uk in 3 easy steps and put these tips to the test. GOOD LUCK!! He has become one of the country’s most adored pop stars with a succession of chart topping singles and albums. Now touring his third record ‘Right Place Right Time’ across the UK and the rest of the world, we were lucky enough to squeeze in a few precious minutes with arguably the cheekiest smile on the planet. Yes, ladies and gentleman, please welcome, Olly Murs!
We are backstage with Mr Oliver Murs! How are you? Ohh, you called me by my first name! Is that alright? Of course you can call me Oliver! That’s nice! So, we’re from The Student Pocket Guide, and were wondering if you had the opportunity, would you be a good uni student? No! I was a student at college for three years. I remember doing drama, dance, and I was supposed to be doing sports, but I was too glued on dance and music, plus the girls were in those subjects! We used to have health and beauty on the same floor as sports though. Basically, you were distracted? Well, we used to run the whole Sports Centre. Me and a few mates had our own office, and we would hire out courts to students and sort out the use of the gym, things like that. We were in control of it! But most mornings, whoever got the morning shift was like, “Ughh, damnit...”, because all the beauticians would come in and it would always smell of women, and beauty products.
If you went to uni, do you think you would have been one of the party animals? Yeah! I think university has the rep for that, and I can understand why people go and do it, but I had a vision of what I wanted to do. I wanted to earn money and work, and I knew that if I went to university I wasn’t going for the right reasons. I think you have to go for the right reasons and that’s to further your education, instead of furthering your social network by going out and getting drunk! What would be your ideal party? Apart from having your album on repeat! Nah, I wouldn’t have my album on. Everyone would fall asleep! My ideal party... I don’t think it matters where it is to be perfectly honest. I think it all depends on the people that you invite. I’ve had parties where there has just been 12 of us round a mates house having a few drinks and a bit of a rave up, so I don’t think you need to have loads of people in a special venue. Do you get to see much of your mates these days? I see them here and there. When I’m touring and travelling around the UK, it’s quite nice because they come and see me, watch my shows, and we go for drinks afterwards. When I’m travelling around the world or constantly in and out of London, I don’t really go home much. When was the last time you had a day off? Well, yesterday was a travel day. We went from Aberdeen to Birmingham, so that was a nice six or seven hours on a coach doing nothing! It’s kind of nice in a way, but also on a bus it’s a bit mucky with about twenty lads; I didn’t feel very
well coming off the bus yesterday! Like being on a long-haul flight, without the flight... Yeah! You get off thinking you’ve caught the flu or something. Have you got any tour bus antics you can tell us about? No, I’m really boring! We’re on our tour so I like to stem a very professional work outfit, so everyone is pretty good. We do go out and have a few drinks but I’ve got 28 shows to do so I need to make sure I’m fit and healthy and that the fans are getting a good show, otherwise if I was out partying and drinking I’d be doing Beibers every night! I’ve got a mate, hypothetically, who has never heard of you. What would be the one song I should play that person and say this is what Olly Murs is all about? Oh, that’s interesting... I’d probably say Troublemaker. I think it’s fun, cheeky, cool and it’s me. So that, or Heart Skips a Beat. Do you know what? All my singles! Haha, if there were three I could pick, I’d choose Dance With Me Tonight, Troublemaker, and Heart Skips a Beat. Which one would you pick? Probably Troublemaker. Cool. Dance With Me Tonight would be a good one because it’s got my name in it! Name dropping. Nice to meet ya! We’ve got to talk about Xtra-Factor. What’s this about you and Rylan? Is he taking your job? Haha, I think you should take my job! If I’m not doing it, would you like to do it? Yeah, put a word in! But what about you, are you doing it this year? I don’t think I’ll be able to because of my schedule. But I keep hearing that the format is going to be different and that it will be later on in the year, so... I just don’t know.
You are brilliant on it, but do you think Rylan would bring something ridiculously over the top and outrageous? I think Rylan is a very funny and outgoing character. I think the show needs a presenter who is a little bit serious at times, and I don’t think Rylan is a serious guy! He should definitely be a part of the show next year, but whether that will be as a presenter or cameo, I don’t know. But apparently he’s been linked to Big Brother and all sorts!
that’s playing hard to get?! We’re just good mates! If me and Caroline were at university, we would have just been good mates. She’s a really good laugh and someone I can hang out with. She’s a top, top girl!
If you were your big boss Simon Cowell for the day... Who would I fire? Yes, who would you?! Haha, nah. I can’t! What would you do? I’d see if I could travel the world in one day. He’s got millions and billions and trillions of pounds, so I think you could easily get one of those super-army-planes and fly around the world. You could easily do it!
What does make you angry? Because you seem to be the nicest guy in music... When people are personal and say horrible stuff about me. But, if people give constructive criticism or genuinely don’t like my music, then fine.
It would make a good TV documentary, we should think about that. We were talking about Caroline Flack before, is it you or her
Does it annoy you getting asked that? No! Although, some people are like, “Oh my God why don’t you fancy Caroline, she’s amazing?!” It will be the same for her, and she will just say the same thing.
Finally, what’s coming up over summer? I’m doing the Robbie tour, quite a few summer shows myself, then obviously we have V Festival coming up as well as some others. There aren’t many other plans yet, but I’ve got those and then a nice holiday at some point!

Vietnamese Beef Pho Cooking isn’t as much of a chore as you might first think. It’s actually a bit of fun when you get creative, try new recipes or cook with mates. Washing up, however, is always a pain! So we have a couple of recipes that only leave you with a single pan to clean… and even that is only a quick rinse.
Ingredients: 1 large onion a knob of ginger, peeled 1 stick of lemongrass 1 red chilli a glug of sesame oil 2 star anise 1 cinnamon stick 2 beef steaks (150g each)
2 mugs of beef stock (600ml) handful of beansprouts 2 handfuls of rice noodles handful of spring onions few sprigs of mint small bunch of basil small bunch of coriander
peel and slice the onion into rings. grate the ginger and finely dice the lemongrass and chilli. put the star anise, cinnamon, onion, ginger, lemongrass and chilli into a pan with a shot of oil and cook for a few minutes. slice the beef into thin strips and add to the pan, stirring to coat in the flavours. splash in the beef stock and bring to a gentle simmer. throw in the beansprouts and noodles, then cook for a few minutes until the noodles are tender. garnish with chopped spring onions and the ripped up herbs. serves 2 Watch the video recipe at www.sortedfood.com/beefpho

Moroccan Lamb Orzo This is a pasta dish with a difference. Orzo is a cross between risotto rice and pasta, meaning that it’s really filling. We’ve used lamb mince with plenty of fresh flavours to keep it tasting nice and light.
Ingredients: 1 red onion a glug of olive oil 1 clove of garlic, peeled 2 tsp of dried oregano 2 tsp of ground cinnamon lean lamb mince (400g)
lamb stock (400ml) 1 tin of chopped tomatoes (400g) orzo pasta (200g) chunk of feta cheese few sprigs of fresh parsley
peel and dice the red onion, then fry in a hot pan with the oil for a few minutes. crush the garlic and add to the red onion with the oregano, cinnamon and lamb mince to brown for a few minutes. add the chopped tomatoes and lamb stock, then simmer for half an hour. pour in the orzo and let it simmer for about 8 minutes so that the orzo is only just cooked. divide the pasta into 4 bowls, crumble over the feta and parsley and serve immediately. serves 4 Watch the video recipe at www.sortedfood.com/orzolamb

WIN AN INTIMATE HOUSE GIG WITH
GABRIELLE APLIN Gabrielle Aplin is a big favourite of ours. Having started out uploading covers on YouTube in her early teens, she is now one of the hottest artists in the UK, having scooped herself a deserved number one over the festive period with her version of Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s, ‘The Power of Love’, followed up by second single ‘Please Don’t Say You Love’ climbing to six in the charts. And now, we are giving you the opportunity to host an intimate gig, with Gabrielle, in your very own home! Did we mention drinks are provided and also cleaners the next day? No? Well they are... She is a talent we at The Student Pocket Guide spotted early and tipped for the success she seems to be reaping now. Not that we’re blowing our own trumpet or anything! At Larmer Tree Festival last summer, we were fortunate enough to spend some time with her, as she told us all about her journey so far, whilst also recording two exclusive acoustic tracks for SPGtv. With her debut album ‘English Rain’ out May 13th, Gabrielle is only going to be further in the limelight this summer. If you want to host a truly one-off night with the gifted Gabrielle, simply head over to TheStudentPocketGuide.com.

STOP! In Greene, NY, during a concert, it is illegal to eat peanuts and walk backwards on the sidewalks. Makes sense if you think about it. Kind of... Maybe... In Eureka, Nevada, it is illegal for men with moustaches to kiss women. We’re assuming that there was an outbreak of charming moustached men in town. Have you ever been in trouble for forgetting a memorable day? In Samoa it might be a bit worse, as it's a crime to forget your wife's birthday. The government in Thailand don’t like going commando, as it’s illegal to leave your house without wearing underwear. Who’s checking...? Workplace lighting must be a big issue in Germany, as it’s law that every office must have a view of the sky, no matter how small it is. To read more weird laws go to www.thestudentpocketguide.com
Beginning his musical career by writing and recording songs in his spare time, never intending anyone to hear them, Bastille frontman Dan Smith seems like somewhat of a reluctant pop star. But since pushing his creation from bedroom hobby to chart topping sensation, the band have reached number one in the album charts with debut record ‘Bad Blood’, and hit number two in the singles with ‘Pompeii’, beaten only by global superstar, Justin Timberlake. Between countless shows and radio appearances, we spoke to Dan and guitarist Will Farquarson on the eve of their album chart victory to see what it’s like being the band of the moment. Do you feel a little bit annoyed that Justin Timberlake went away for seven years, and then chose to come back the same week you released your single?! Dan: No, not really! I went to the Brit Awards, (I feel like such an idiot saying that out loud), and was sitting there watching him perform with a massive production and huge band. It felt like I was in the TV when I was watching it! It’s one of those things. With the single, someone at our label said that we would have easily got a number one in pretty much any other week of the year, if we had sold that many. Will: I wish they wouldn’t tell us these things...! D: I know, it’s like ‘oh thanks, that’s wicked!’ But being anywhere near the charts was never an objective or an aim or anything that we even thought would be a possibility. How was it putting together your debut album, ‘Bad Blood’? D: I guess everything that we recorded and
everything that I wrote up until the end of last year was intended to be for this. There were about 20 songs, and the hardest thing was picking which of them would feature on it. It was fun, with song writing I always just got on with it and I like having ideas going on in the back of my head. W: Also there wasn’t that much pressure, because you often hear about bands having to go into the studio for around two weeks to record their album. We just did it over a year. I’d occasionally head down and we’d just sort of hang out. D: We’ve spent the last couple of years working steadily, both building our live thing and in the studio. We’ve never really had any hype or pressure from anyone, so it was quite a nice way to make an album. Do you feel more at home in the studio than on stage? W: I think Dan does. I’m the other way round. D: I guess. I think for me personally, the live side is something I’ve had to adapt to and
kind of grow to enjoy. It definitely wasn’t natural to begin with. But then Woody, who plays drums, loves performing, and so does Will... W: When I first met Dan he was quite shy and sat behind his piano, and now he’s insane! He just bops about! I can’t keep up, I’m getting old. What’s your favourite song to perform live off the album? D: ‘Pompeii’ probably has the best response at the moment because people know it the most, but we’re really lucky, during the whole tour people seem to know the words to pretty much every song, which is nice. I think for us at the moment, there’s a song called ‘The Silence’, which is off the extended version of the album, that is a lot of fun to play. It’s quite loud, and fast. W: It’s the closest we get to punk. D: It’s not even remotely punk, but it’s the closest we get to it! How did your life as a student influence your music writing? D: I wouldn’t even remotely be doing music as a job if I hadn’t gone to uni. I had the best three years at Leeds. I studied English at university and being in that environment of reading, going to lectures and that kind of thing was wicked. I also went to way more gigs than I ever had done before. Going to different clubs and hearing different types of music introduced me to new ideas.
>>
I always think that because you’re in a band, you always live the student life. Is that not right? D: I think we work a lot harder than people would expect. I’m a complete control freak. Will’s keeping quiet... W: Dan works a lot harder than I do! Dan is a very studious man; I am very lazy. It’s a miracle that I succeeded at anything. D: I miss not having much to do. I don’t miss deadlines. I hated deadlines! I still have a recurring nightmare where I wake up and I’m like, “arghh, it’s the end of third term and I haven’t read a single book or done a single essay or been to a single lecture!” Let’s talk a little bit about Glastonbury, because you performed there pretty early on in your career didn’t you? D: We did, yeah. Surely a bigger stage awaits this year then? D: We will see. We’re playing on the main stage at Isle of Wight, which is nuts! The Killers are headlining, then Bloc Party beneath them, then Maccabees, then Ben Howard, then us. We’re like, “What the hell are we doing on that stage?!” W: Definitely an admin error there. You guys are the masters of reinterpretation. Let’s take your expert knowledge, and I’m going to fire some covers at you and I need you guys to tell me which you prefer. So let’s start off with Whitney and Dolly Parton – ‘I Will Always Love You’... D: Whitney. W: I love Dolly Parton. I’m going to say Dolly Parton and I haven’t even heard it. Pet Shop Boys or Elvis Presley - ‘Always on my Mind’? D: Neither of them I am a particularly big fan of, so... W: You’ve got to love Elvis! Bon Iver or Birdy - ‘Skinny Love’? Both: Bon Iver. D: I do actually really like Birdy though, I think she’s got a really good voice. It will be very interesting to see when she writes her own stuff. Bon Iver is a genius!

Gemini Your dream of appearing on Deal or No Deal becomes a reality.
You get to the final two boxes exchanging some top banter with Noel along the way, and would you believe it, you’re left with the big quarter mill and 1p... With nerves of steel, you make a fool of the banker, and become the youngest jackpot winner.
Cancer
Jupiter will align with Mars causing you to have a complete breakdown. You will wear a tin-foil hat and become convinced that the government is listening to your phone calls. You will appear on BBC Breakfast to discuss your theories, and will become an internet celebrity as a result.
Leo You will suffer a bump on the head the day before your
big exam and completely forget how to read. Fortunately, you had revised well enough before this, guess the exam questions as well as how to write, and still get a first. Bizarrely, all abilities are restored within two hours of the exam finishing.
Virgo On a casual Saturday afternoon spent shopping in your local
mall, a host of onlookers mistake you for a famous movie star. Swamped by people wishing to have their photo taken with you, your chilled day out turns into a pretty exciting experience. Rumour soon spreads around the city and next thing you know you’ve made the 6 o’clock news.
Libra After the unravelling of Orion’s Belt, you lose all sense of
control in your movements and can only travel from A to B by sprinting with your arms in the air waving from side to side. It takes only a matter of hours for you to become the latest YouTube phenomenon. Harlem Shake bites the dust.
Scorpio After six numbers appear to you in a dream, you will win
thirty million on the lottery. You buy a mansion in the countryside and turn it into the world’s largest indoor water park. Stairs becomes water slides, beds are replaced by lilos, and you hands-down become the coolest theme-park owner on the planet.
Sagittarius
After spending two weeks solidly playing Guitar Hero, you decide to pick up an actual guitar for the first time and lo and behold, your skills are off the scale! Word soon spreads along with endless requests for your services from bands across the globe. The Gods of rock music have certainly been kind to you.
Capricorn You’re my boy Blue! Exams are over and summer is here, which means one thing and one thing only - partaaay! You play host to the most legendary party known to man, a shindig so good and so outrageous that Will Ferrell along with the cast of Old School fly over from the US and pat you on the back for your efforts.
Aquarius There’s a saying that goes, “you only get out what you put in”. A phrase you fully understand. After discovering you made it onto Mastermind, you make the decision that around 100 encyclopaedias must be read, front to back, page by page. Needless to say, you win and set a record high score that will never be matched.
Pisces It’s laundry time, which means your entire wardrobe needs a deep, deep cleanse. Problem this time around is that you only left yourself one tee-shirt to wear that day, a tee-shirt which for some reason only has one sleeve. After getting spotted by a fashionista on your walk home, the onearmed tee-shirt soon becomes next big thing with every major high-street store stocking your creation.

SETTING
GOALS
Olympic athlete and Sheffield Hallam Animation student Peter Bakare has some top advice for personal motivation and achievement... Goal setting is an athletes bread and butter when it comes to achievement. Too many people go to school or the gym without an idea of what they want out of it. Whether it be losing body fat, gaining muscle mass, running a faster lap of the athletics track or revising for an exam, setting goals helps you keep focused and engaged in whatever you do. A goal in sight enables you to tailor your lifestyle in order to achieve. For example, changing something in your diet and workouts for a physical goal or how you approach your studies to achieve your expected grades. When setting a goal you can always be a little ambitious. For example, “Next year I want to make the national team”. In your eyes, at this moment, this may seem a little farfetched and unachievable. But, this is a long-term goal and it’s never going to happen overnight.
Once you have your long-term goal in mind, you’ll need to break it down into lots of smaller steps to make it happen. Each step adds up to the completion of your long-term goal. Draft long-term goals, and then institute short-term steps to achieve them. Plan them out step-bystep so you have a tiered plan of attack. Whether you want better grades, stronger lifts, new friends, or better nutrition, you should build short-term, achievable steps that will lead you to success. If you are an athlete, chances are you are already goal orientated or a competitive individual who will do what’s necessary to reach a target. If your goal is to improve your grades then translate your competitiveness to the classroom and dominate those papers ‘like a boss’. Set aside some time at night to read and understand your days’ work.
Are there any shortcuts? Many people ask if there are any shortcuts to achieve what they want, faster or with less effort. And yes, there are shortcuts, but they are not worth it. See it as cheating in an exam and getting a grade you didn’t work for. Short-term, it may feel good getting a higher grade, but ultimately, you weren’t the person who achieved it. Take accountability when assessing your goals. Make them a passion. Tell your friends, family, teachers and coaches what your goals are and you’ll be surprised by the amount
of help you will receive. There are support officers at your universities, whether it be counsellors or lifestyle coaches, to help structure your day-to-day activities in order to make your long-term goals achievable. Surround yourself with people with similar goals and interests to help stay motivated. Partner with someone who is at a similar level and has the same or similar targets. Working with someone will help you stay focussed, and enable you to push yourself harder. Good Luck!
You may well have seen this before. Guys running across the rooftops of a city skyline, jumping from one building to the next, continually moving in a smooth and artistic manner. It’s exciting to watch and highly impressive, with such feats and movements seeming impossible to you or I. This discipline is called Parkour - the art of movement. It has gone from its sheltered existence in the sleepy suburbs of Paris to what is now a globally recognised and practised movement. We can see it on YouTube, on TV, in the parks of our cities and now, even in schools, taught as part of Physical Education. We caught up with two guys who are part of this new generation of Parkour enthusiasts, commonly known today as Freerunners. Meet Marcus Wilson and Ryan Lovejoy, 17 and 19 years old respectively. Marcus, a Freerunner, and Ryan, a film student, both of whom are making serious footsteps.
SPG: How did you find out about Parkour? Ryan: I found out about it through videos on the internet. I think that’s how most people find out about it. How about you Marcus? Yeah, it was through YouTube. Then me and a few friends went out and tried it. How long have you guys been practicing? Marcus: About four years now. Ryan: Yeah, it’s about the same for me. How easy was it to get involved with other people practicing? Ryan: When you try and start it, it’s not something that is as accessible as football, you know, going down your local park and seeing some people having a kickabout. You have to know the people to get in and train with them but once you do, everyone in the community is so friendly and willing to train with you; it’s really cool.
Marcus: You can progress with other people as well, like your close friends. You can progress at the same rate and help each other get better. This is exactly how Parkour came into being during the late 80s and 90s. In the small Parisian satellite town of Lisses, Frenchman David Belle and a small group of close knit friends began to nurture their discipline. Formed under the name of Yamaski, the group practised the principle of efficiency in movement, drawing upon inspiration passed down by David’s father. As time went on, along with the development of Yamaski’s skill, it was inevitable that people would start taking serious notice of Belle and his companions. The jumps became leaps, the gaps became buildings and what was once exclusive became commercially recognised. SPG: How important are the roots of Parkour? Ryan: I think when you start Parkour or Freerunning, that’s what you’re really interested in; you learn where it all started in Lisses and France. As you get more into it as a sport, as years go on, you focus more on your own training. Marcus: It’s all about progressing yourself. How different is Parkour today, or what is also referred to as Freerunning? Marcus: I’d say Parkour is more looked at as flowing movements from A to B, as quickly and as fluently as you can. Freerunning is more arty, with flips and rolls. Still fluent, but with different movements.
>>
Ryan: It’s arguably more creative in your movements. You don’t have to go from A to B as fast as possible. Marcus: I’d say it’s one of the biggest arguments there is in the community. How do you think people who don’t practice Parkour see it? Marcus: It’s looked at as a sport in most people’s eyes, but it’s more of an art I’d say. From a filming perspective, we can look at it as more of an art.
Freerunning era, Sebastien Foucan, there has been an emergence of official Parkour bodies and professional groups. They offer training, sponsorship and also direction in pursuing a career. SPG: Would you say it’s a developing movement? Ryan: It’s still at its early stages, definitely. It’s already massive but it’s going to sky rocket I think. So many more people are out there picking it up and doing it. Marcus: It’s all over the world now as well; a lot of companies are starting everywhere.
Ryan: Yeah, you wouldn’t really look at a football game and say, ‘Cor, that is filmed so well!’ Whereas with a Freerunning video, there is more choice and direction. The pace and everything about it; it’s like a chase scene from a really well directed film. Some of them are just amazing. What we have today is a discipline that is being constantly reborn. With each new member and each new group, comes a different technique and a different take on what can be done. You only have to go on YouTube to unveil for yourself its diversity and popularity. Through the successes of Parkour idols including David Belle, and from the
What’s the UK scene like now? Marcus: The main area in the UK is London; it’s the most looked at area and still one of the best places to go. There’s also Brighton, Norwich and my hometown Beccles! People usually train in their home area and then organise a trip to another place. That’s where training comes into it as well. You’ll train there, but when you go to another place, like London, there’s bigger drops, higher walls and various stuff which you have to adapt to.
Ryan: I think travelling is one of the best things you can do to progress your Parkour or Freerunning. One hundred percent. What are your aims with Parkour? Marcus: My personal aim at the minute is just to go out and enjoy myself whilst I’m young. I’ve still got free time to do it and then hopefully it will progress into stunt work and stuff like that, possibly films. Just to see how it goes. Ryan: For me personally, through filming people like Marcus I want to get into the film industry. Our recent video had global success. We were in The Sun, Metro, we’ve been on TV and on the radio: publicity which is really helping us kick-start our careers. It’s having the ambition to get up out of bed every morning and be like, ‘Right, this is what I want to do’ and going out there and making it happen. Marcus and Ryan have recently been working on a promotional freerunning video for us at The Student Pocket Guide. Artist: Larry Poulton Institute: University of East London Description: This piece, entitled “View From my Bedroom Window, is based on the theme of experience vs. memory, and how after we have experienced something, all we have left is the memory of the experience. Larry is interested in the power of memories, the ones that have shaped his life, and how the experience can vary from one person to another, including how memories can be heightened or diluted. Larry looks back nostalgically on the cover of the first album he bought and the TV programmes he watched as a child, using these memories as a starting point.

Artist: Agnieszka Maksymiuk Institute: Birmingham City University Description: Agnieszka has always been inspired by the beauty of nature, and tried to capture the movement of water and expression of colours. In this image the navy blue ink was poured into the clear water and as a result changed into irregular, smooth shapes.
Artist: Josephine Tournebize Institute: Birmingham City University Description: Josephine’s “Monkey Ring” is cast in Bronze, and was one of her first attempts with the lost wax technique. The top of the ring should represent a monkey or human like face without too many details, so the viewer can decide for themselves which one it is. On the right are bananas and on the other sides are some very detailed leaves. It is partially inspired by highly detailed Indian jewellery.
Artist: Luc Waring Institute: University of Brighton Description: The girls represent multi-national corporations playing with the world economy, which is represented by the different currencies on the Jenga blocks. The girls are dressed in seductive expensive clothes, illustrating the seduction of advertisement and image of ‘high-life’ which goes with it. The Jenga tower itself represents the unstable world economy.
Artist: Iona Hutley Institute: University of Brighton Description: Iona was interested in the notion of time and space, but the theme of the work is somewhat religious based. Most of her ideas come from things that spring out from newspapers, books, headlines or just general day to day events.
