STONEWALL NATIONAL MUSEUM & ARCHIVES stonewall-museum.org

Stonewall National Museum & Archives (SNMA) is a safe, welcoming place that inspires and promotes understanding through collecting, preserving and sharing the proud culture of lesbian, gay, bisexual transgender and queer people of all stories, and their significant role in American society. SNMA is one of the largest gay archives and libraries in the United States, now almost 50 years old. It is located in Fort Lauderdale & Wilton Manors, Florida. It was founded in 1972 by founder Mark Silber, who used the name “Stonewall to recognize the fight for LGBTQ liberation that began at the Stonewall Inn in 1969. It was a name with meaning then and it has become nearly synonymous with gay liberation efforts since that time. SNMA presents an ongoing 12-month schedule of exhibitions on LGBTQ themes and public programs, including author presentations, films, panel discussions, and collaborative events at its museum and library in South Florida and in cities across the United States. 8

ERIK BENSON GALLERY SHOWCASE ARTIST:

As a relatively new artist, I try very hard to create paintings that speak about the beauty and chaos of accepting one’s identity. My pieces often reflect on my experiences as a Gay Millenial attempting to understand self love in a generation built on instant gratification. Typically one may see fluidity, darkness, and vibrant caricatures that play as symbolic versions of myself. Those contrasting features seemingly represent the clashing of my feminine and masculine traits. I aspire to have my artwork speak to those who are continuously putting in the self reflection/introspection necessary to better themselves. Creating the conversation during this pivotal era of gender and sexual variance seems necessary to understanding one’s true self. With this art, I strive to openly communicate my own struggles in finding my place in the multi-faceted queer community. It’s truly an honor that my passion for art and my advocacy for the LGBTQIA community have grown cohesively; For that I am thankful! 13

ROY DE VRIES

Roy de Vries has been painting since he was a student at Miami Senior High School. His fascination with the human form started then. His interest grew as he went on to college in Albuquerque and has blossomed during his time in San Diego.

GALLERY SHOWCASE ARTIST:

Roy adopts an inquisitive posture in relating to the human form and ponders questions concerning human sexuality, especially within the categories of androgyny and homophilic attraction. In his paintings, he compels the viewer to consider the categories that are accepted as the norm, to the extent that those categories may be brought to a kind of equilibrium. 31

Finding diversity in the rainbow. Being of the generation that embraced the rainbow flag as a symbol under which the LGBT community could rally, I struggle with the fracturing of our community and with the diluting of its message. As each group within the greater LGBTQIA+ community adds their own unique flag to the ever expanding flagpole, does the rainbow still signify our unity and proclaim our strength as a whole ? In 1978, Gilbert Baker designed the original Pride Flag with each color representing a different aspect of our community: Hot Pink = Sex, Red = Life, Orange = Healing, Yellow = Sunlight, Green = Nature, Turquosie = Magic / Art, Indigo = Serenity, Violet = Spirit. It was never meant to reflect the gender, race or sexual identity of any individual…..

“Expletive Chapel: Lavender Heights (BOOK OF JOB REVISITED)” is a bible opened to the book of Job that was painted lavender as a component of Aaron Wilder’s solo exhibition “Expletive Chapel: Lavender Heights” at The InsideOut in Sacramento’s gayborhood, Lavender Heights, during Fall 2019. For this project, Wilder converted The InsideOut into a chapel-like space dedicated to the lived experiences and resiliency of the Sacramento area’s LGBTQ+ community in response to demographic and political shifts; through community engagement responding to the perpetuation of homophobia, transphobia, and derogatory slurs; and by exploring a sense of community cohesion taking into account the possibility of intersectionality coexisting with individuality. Wilder conducted research at the Lavender Library, an LGBTQ+ nonprofit library in Sacramento, on the history of the local queer community and interviewed self-identified queer individuals whose lives intersected with the Sacramento LGBTQ+ community in some way. Wilder then sourced objects, such as this bible, that symbolized the lived experiences of his interviewees and people he learned about through his research at the Lavender Library and painted these objects lavender.

THE STUDIO DOOR

ADDRESS

In the heart of Hillcrest, The Studio Door is a unique art center located just minutes from Downtown and Balboa Park. Since 2014, The Studio Door has become known for its gallery of contemporary art, working artist studios, special events and museum store. Great destination for locals, tourists and other art lovers.

The Studio Door is located at 3867 Fourth Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103-3113 between University Avenue and Robinson Avenue in the Hillcrest Neighborhood.

The Studio is gay-owned and operated by Patric Stillman with loving support from his partner Danné Sadler & mother-in-law Evelyn Loss. 89

GALLERY HOURS Tuesday – Saturday • Noon – 7 PM Sunday and Monday • By Appointment Only

GETTING THERE

PARKING

Hillcrest is accessible from three primary directions. From downtown, head up Fifth Avenue, along Balboa Park’s western edge and through Bankers Hill. Once you’ve reached Robinson Avenue, you’ll be in the heart of Hillcrest. As the neighborhood is popular with the LGBTQ+ community, look for businesses flying a rainbow flag and you’ll know you’ve arrived! From the east, exit University Avenue from Interstate 805 and head west. A few short blocks places you squarely in the center of the main shopping and dining area. For those traveling from the airport or Interstate 5, exit on Washington Street, and head east “up the hill” and exit on University Avenue. You’ll pass through Mission Hills (worth the stop too!) before entering Hillcrest.

Metered street parking is available in the neighborhood. Meters are enforced 10 AM – 8 PM.

90

The closest parking lot is just next door at 3835 4th Avenue. Pricing varies by day and time. To find other parking options, hop on the free “Access Hillcrest Shuttle” or visit The Uptown Community Parking District’s AccessHillcrest.com to help you pre-plan your visit.
