What does LGBTQIA+ Stand For?

The Studio Door is proud to present this special LGBTQIA+ exhibition during the month of San Diego’s Pride festivities. This year is the 50th anniversary celebration of the Stonewall Riots. In June of 1969, a group of young gays, lesbians and transgender New Yorkers clashed with the police near a Greenwich Village bar called Stonewall. Though they weren’t the first activists in America to fight for equality, their protests over the next few days would lead to a mobilization for Gay Liberation fighting oppression throughout the country. A year later, Gay Pride marches took place across the globe and served as an annual gathering to promote self-affirmation, dignity, equal rights, visibility and build community. In five decades, there has been many positive changes for the greater community politically and socially. In addition to being a celebratory, Pride acts as a reminder that there is still much work to be done in the US and around the world to protect Human Rights for All. In this exhibition, The Studio Door asked LGBTQIA+ artists what Pride means to them in 2019. On the following pages, you will see the variety of responses from over 40 artists from across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

L • Lesbian G • Gay B • Bisexual T • Transgender Q • Queer Q • Questioning I • Intersex A • Asexual A • Ally + • Plus At one time the word “Gay” may have meant to be representative of the entire community but as the decades have past, visibility for individual’s definitions of their gender and sexuality has come to the forefront. The Plus Symbol is meant to be inclusive to those who identify differently from the above acronyms or prefer not to be limited by any definition.

DAVID JESTER

Artwork seen here is a part of Jester’s ongoing series. GRID is not shown here. It will be revealed at the opening of this special exhibition.

GALLERY SHOWCASE ARTIST:

David Jester is an exciting American painter who has exhibited his work in the US and Netherlands. His work centers around snapshots of the gay community as he has experienced it; themes include masculinity, discrimination, submission, love and joy. The distinctive painted pools act as metaphors for the pool of humanity, particularly within the community, and the characters that appear in the water represent lived and recognizable behaviors. Particularly focusing on the impact of online interactions between gay men, Jester ultimately asks questions about identity and belonging within the family he has chosen as his own. David Jester first exhibited with The Studio Door in 3•UP exhibition in January 2018. With PROUD+, the gallery has the opportunity to reveal to the public his largest work to date. GRID is ten feet by five feet. It is a continued exploration of his underwater series and includes no less than thirteen figures. 31

HAUS OF DAVISANTI

David Santillanes - San Diego GRID • Oil • 10’ x 5’ • NFS Fashions seen here are part of Haus of Davisanti fashions. Three looks are being specially prepared for PROUD+ exhibition.

GALLERY SHOWCASE ARTIST:

David Santillanes has been creating ever since he was old enough to hold a crayon in his hands. His creations initially grew out of his love of music and the glittering fashion of Hollywood’s iconic celebrities. Upon graduating from Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, David cut his teeth in the costume industry refining his craftsmanship to bring wearable works of art to life. Pushing his creations even farther, he eventually began his own business. Haus of Davisanti was founded on the core principles of imaginative artistry and exquisite craftsmanship. David’s mission is to tell a story by taking what is unfamiliar or unexpected and transform it into something that is relevant to the modern world. He takes pride in breathing life into creations based upon juxtaposition and the core principles of couture. PROUD+ is the first opportunity for The Studio Door and Haus of Davisanti to collaborate. A in-depth look at his work will be explored in the gallery August 2019. 47

JOHN WAIBLINGER GALLERY SHOWCASE ARTIST:

John Waiblinger - Los Angeles Urban Forrest •Post Photography on Paper • 16” x 10”• $ 675 Winter Rain •Post Photography on Paper • 16” x 10”• $ 675 Summer Rain •Post Photography on Paper • 16” x 10”• $ 675

In my art I explore the mystery of why I find some men so beautiful and so intriguing. I use found images from the Internet’s vast store of gay pornography, and combine them with my own photographs to articulate a relationship with those men. I consider the work Post Photography in that I am “making” a new photograph that is specific to my internal point of view. The work presents the men I’ve appropriated via their pornographic performance and reconstructs them within the realm of my imagination. I manipulate these images to portray a masculinity that celebrates softness and a different type of edge, creating a tension between the normative and the transgressive. Pornography tends to objectify whereas I prefer to romanticize. My intent is to investigate and illustrate how such juxtaposition can broaden perceptions and understandings of masculinity. John Waiblinger first exhibited with The Studio Door in the national exhibition PROUD 2017. He returned to the San Diego gallery as a featured gallery artist in April - June 2019. 59

“Waiblinger uses his fixation on the beauty of men to transfigure the carnal into his own embodiments of adoration and celebration. 60

THE STUDIO DOOR

ADDRESS

Relocated from North Park to Hillcrest, The Studio Door is a unique art center located just minutes from Downtown and Balboa Park. Since 2014, The Studio Door has become known for its gallery of contemporary art, working artist studios, special events and museum store. Great destination for locals, tourists and other art lovers.

The Studio is gay-owned and operated by Patric Stillman with loving support from his partner Danné Sadler & mother-in-law Evelyn Loss. 67

GALLERY HOURS Tuesday – Saturday • Noon – 7 PM Sunday and Monday • By Appointment Only Extended hours during San Diego Pride • July 12 - 14, 2019

GETTING THERE

PARKING

Hillcrest is accessible from three primary directions. From downtown, head up Fifth Avenue, along Balboa Park’s western edge and through Bankers Hill. Once you’ve reached Robinson Avenue, you’ll be in the heart of Hillcrest. As the neighborhood is popular with the LGBTQ+ community, look for businesses flying a rainbow flag and you’ll know you’ve arrived! From the east, exit University Avenue from Interstate 805 and head west. A few short blocks places you squarely in the center of the main shopping and dining area. For those traveling from the airport or Interstate 5, exit on Washington Street, and head east “up the hill” and exit on University Avenue. You’ll pass through Mission Hills (worth the stop too!) before entering Hillcrest.

Metered street parking is available in the neighborhood. Meters are enforced 10 AM – 8 PM.

68

The closest parking lot is just next door at 3835 4th Avenue. Pricing varies by day and time. To find other parking options, use “Valet on 5th” parking services or hop on the free “Access Hillcrest Shuttle” visit The Uptown Community Parking District’s AccessHillcrest.com to help you pre-plan your visit.
