GRAPHICS I have a thing for fonts and graphics, so I wanted to share the techniques behind some of the more design-heavy posts:

S

ince this post was about conveying a mood, I wanted to use images with a lot of contrast, while still maintaining a cohesive color scheme. In this context, pink + florals = princess, and black + studs = witch.

here's a graveyard next door to my building. Turns out graveyards don't make the best photo backgrounds-at least not in this situation-so I used Photoshop to “cut out my images, then placed them all on one background and added cast shadows.

The Boy has a Nikon D200, but we wound up using my little Sony CyberShot for these photos!

The photo at the top was taken in front of the condos across the street from my apartment (note the address on the doorjamb). The photo at the bottom was taken in the entryway to my apartment building. That's a (non-working) fountain set into the wall on the right! Curiously, it was filled with rubber bands. What is that about?

The photo on the left was taken in the grassy area next to my building. I had to check for dog poop before walking on the grass!

PIMP YOUR BLOG

Create a text A simple text header can look really professional if you pick the right font.

1

Assess your style

Are you classic, preppy, hipster, grunge, glam, or girly? A combination? Your header typeface should reflect your personal style so readers understand your point-of-view as soon as they see your blog.

2

Choose the appropriate typeface

3

The typeface (or font) will represent your style: clean, non-serif fonts are modern; cursive fonts are formal and feminine, fonts with a lot of texture suggest eclecticism.

Add color and extras as needed Gradients and drop shadows add depth, patterns and texture add detail. Play around with it until it tells your story!
