FREER Terrorism
TERRORISM - the state of fear and submission produced by terrorism or terrorisation. Last week the events in Paris literally terrorised us all - terrorised in the true sense of the word. Just after the terrible murders of journalists at Charlie Hebdo and of the shoppers in the kosher supermarket, I attended the induction of the new Rabbi at Finchley United Synagogue. The additional security was evident but so was the hushed talk about what would happen next, or more accurately, who might be the next target. After the service we were asked to disperse quickly and not congregate. I then started to receive messages asking when would we have armed police officers on Golders Green Road and/or outside Kosher Kingdom. Jewish schools contacted me asking what help the Government could provide on security. I heard that parents were keeping their children from schools. So for a time, the terrorists won. They have instilled a state of fear and we subsequently changed the patterns of our lives - we allowed ourselves to be subjugated. This is in spite of the amazing support of the Police, the CST and Shomrim. As the days passed, the tension may have eased, but hasn’t gone away. So what next? On a practical level, the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary are both looking at what needs to be done to help protect Jewish schools, communal buildings and the community in general. Yet in a free and democratic society we can never eliminate risk. We cannot and must not allow ourselves to become besieged; living behind high walls with CCTV and security guards. We can take sensible precautions but to use an old wartime phrase - we must “Keep Calm and Carry On.” I have personally been subjected to attacks by an extreme Islamist group during one of my constituency advice surgeries. Although only threatening behaviour and verbal abuse, I remained calm and I didn’t budge from my seat. I’m not sure if I was brave or foolhardy, but the fact I showed no fear in their presence made the extremists angry, but more importantly showed them that I wouldn’t be intimidated. So now, we
must all face-down attempts to intimidate us. Not just by carrying on our daily lives, but challenging

Muslim community. They want to sow seeds of unrest and division. But we must also refuse to tolerate casual racism and anti-Semitism. We must challenge anyone who uses language or behaviour that is unacceptable. With the exception of armed terrorists, most racists and anti-Semites will back down when challenged. Alternatively, call the Police; a hate crime is in the eye of the victim. Finally, it is easy to allow ourselves to go down the path of virulent Islamophobia but you cannot fight anti-Semitism by flirting with the same sentiments. Allowing ourselves to become virulently anti-Muslim is a slippery slope that may, ironically, fuel anti-Semitism. . We must be on our guard to ensure our fears aren’t exploited. Anyone - especially politicians - who suggests that if only we could remove that community or this community - should be rejected. Remember the British National Party and the National Front? They haven’t gone away, they’ve just become better at hiding in plain sight. Beware of any journalist or politician that suggests any community is less British than another. If we fall into the trap of believing all our troubles will go away if only we got rid of “them”; if we allow the public or politicians to single out one community as un-British and disloyal, who’s next? When the racists have got rid of “them” they will move onto someone else. For the intolerant there will always be a “them”. It’s then only a matter of time until you and I become one of “them”! We must stand up to intolerance and the fear it breeds. If we don’t, then there will be no-one to stand up for us. In dedication of Dayan Gershon Lopian Zt’’l Sefer Torah
It’s nearly a year since we lost our precious Dayan Lopian zt’l, whose wisdom and advice, warmth and caring were legendary. On that cold Erev Shabbat, hundreds of people, men and women of all ages, felt that they had lost a father, advisor and friend – someone who had always been there to give advice and encouragement. Not a week goes by when we wish that we could dial that number so engraved on our memory. Edgware; Thirty Years ago, when the Dayan and his Rebbetsen Judy moved to Edgware, the community was very different. With his characteristic warmth, he and his Rebbetsen nurtured his congregants, creating the large thriving community that exists today. Their house in Manor Park Gardens became a magnet for young and old. When their son in law, Rabbi Yechiel Emmanuel became engaged to his daughter, he found that the word family not only applied to family members, but also to anyone who crossed their threshold. The sea of Arba Minim on Succos as well as the thriving learning programmes are testament to his gentle but firm encouragement. Knowing that a mikvah was crucial for the community, the Dayan, together with Dayan Ehrentreu, undertook the momentous task of building the Edgware Mikvah. This revolutionary undertaking was his pride and joy changing the life of the whole area. Posek; The Dayan gained an extraordinary reputation as a posek spending his early years learning from the most eminent Rabbonim. In 1975, he travelled to America to do Shimush with Rabbi Moishe Feinstein zt’l, the foremost Posek Ha’Dor, who dubbed him “His man in London”. But Dayan Lopian’s approachably and love for everyone was such that not only Rabbonim from every corner of the globe asked their difficult questions but anyone and everyone knew his number and used it many, many times. “When you phoned it was almost as if he was waiting for your call.” Even in retirement, he was still the posek to whom everyone turned. “He transmitted pure Torah as a direct mesorah from the earlier Gedolim from whom he was descended” from his illustrious father Rabbi Leib Lopian zt’l
and his Grandfather, the legendary Reb Elyeh Lopian zt’l. Always available, he never turned off his phone “In case someone needs me!” Even relaxing in his garden, with a sefer in his hands, the phone was in his pocket. Family Week; Family Week was a residential week designed to give young couples a taste of authentic Judaism. Along with many eminent Rabbonim we had the honour and privilege of having the guidance of Dayan and Judy Lopian. We weathered the primitive conditions of the first Family Weeks, ignoring communal bathrooms and lumpy sofas to sit at the feet of this “warm approachable family man with a heart as expansive as his mind” who nurtured and guided us and our families on a path that was often difficult but always rewarding. Our children became their children and our grandchildren knew him as part of the family. Family Week has been given the honour and privilege to commission a Sefer Torah in his memory. It will be housed in Edgware Kollel and with a Hachnasas Sefer Torah on 26th Shevat 5775 – that is 15th February 2015 to coincide with his Yahrzeit starting at Edgware United Shul, with Mincha at 13.45 followed by a Siyum HaShas at 14.00, with the procession to Kollel Beis Aharon at 17.00. This is not just a community Sefer Torah. Dayan Lopian was known throughout the world and we want to give everyone the opportunity to participate in this very special event. A Sefer Torah is a living source of inspiration and therefore a very fitting tribute to a man who was a living source of inspiration to so many people. Dayan Lopian’s whole life was Torah. His tiny study, filled from top to bottom with sefarim, is testament to his love of Torah. He not only encouraged so many to grow in their observance but his very being was suffused with a Simchas HaChaim, which inspired followers from far and wide. Tips from the bottom of the class
You can’t get much more basic than times tables – or so one might think. Unfortunately, although they are the building blocks of mental arithmetic and completely crucial to making any mathematical progress, many people, including A’ Level pupils I kid you not, simply don’t know their tables!
• The first 9 answers in the 11 times table are double digits of the multiplier e.g. 3 x 11 = 33 ; 7 x 11 = 77
Students who don’t know their tables usually fall into 2 categories:
• In the 9 times table the digits of every answer add up to..… 9 ! E.g. 3 x 9 = 27 and 2+7=9; 7 x 9 = 63 and 6+3 = 9
1) Those who never really got to grips with them 2) Those who knew them in primary school but who subsequently, during their more advanced studies, developed a fatal addiction to calculators and have now forgotten their tables. Frankly I don’t know what is going on in Secondary schools that can allow either scenario to happen, but from my 25 years of teaching private students I know that it’s an epidemic. Either the schools haven’t noticed this widespread lack of basic skills, which beggars belief, or more likely, and even more shameful, they’re simply not bothered. They really don’t think that students doing algebra, geometry and statistics should take time out to learn what should be second nature to any student, let alone higher level ones. Even though the time saved in not having to struggle over every basic sum that comes their way in all branches of Maths would alone justify the initial amount of time needed to master times tables once and for all. So for the exclusive benefit of North West Circular readers I have put together a package of tips and tricks that will make learning tables for you and/or your children easier. Some of these ‘tips’ are really basic facts or rudimentary skills. I don’t claim them to be deep secrets that I’m revealing, but for those of you who aren’t familiar with some or any of them they should prove very helpful in nailing those tables once and for all. So here we go…. • To multiply a number by 10 stick a nought/ zero on the end e.g. 11 x 10 = 110
• To multiply a number by 5. Halve it and then stick a naught/zero on the end e.g. 8 x 5 : half of 8 = 4, so with zero on end = 40
• In the 9 times table the 10 digit is 1 less than the multiplier e.g. 8x9 = 72 where the 10 digit 7 is 1 less than the multiplier 8 • From 5x12 up to 9x12 (the tricky bit of the 12 times table) the 10 digit of the answer is 1 greater than the multiplier, e.g. 6 x 12 = 72: the 10 digit is 7 which is 1 greater than the multiplier 6; 8 x 12 = 96: the 10 digit is 9 which is 1 greater than 8 • Always remember that in multiplication, order doesn’t matter – so if you find 8 x 4 tricky but you know that 4 x 8 = 32, then you’ve got Two for the price of One! • The difference between successive SQUARE numbers = their sum! E.g. 7^2 - 6^2 = 49 – 36 = 13 and 13 = 6 + 7 ! Once you’ve used these tips to help master your tables, you’ll know them off by heart but they are all still good and useful rules for higher number multiplication as well. So that’s your starting point - anything you didn’t understand, feel free to see me in a lesson.

For this Issue we interviewed Rev Reuben Turner MBE, who was a communal Chazzan & Minister for many years. He is also the author of eight books on educational Jewish topics. We discuss his MBE honour which he received no more than 4 weeks ago, as well as other communal matters. Q) Firstly, ‘Mazel Tov’ on your recent MBE award from Her Majesty, the Queen. The day that you received the MBE was obviously a very notable one. Could you perhaps tell us a little about it? Sure. It all started, 6 months ago, when I received a letter from the Prime Minister, David Cameron, asking if I would accept the honour, to which I appreciatively replied that I would. I was then invited to Buckingham Palace 4 weeks ago to formally receive the award. It was a most memorable occasion which cannot be easily forgotten. I was so moved by the entire event which was most dignified in every way. I am greatly honoured by Her Majesty, the Queen on being presented with the title MBE. The whole Ceremony was most impressive. Q) What words were exchanged with the Queen during the actual award? As soon as I was introduced to the Queen I informed her the following; “I will recite a blessing in Hebrew followed by an English translation, blessing Her Majesty and family, as prescribed by our Sages many years ago upon meeting a King or Queen”. Following my Brochoh, Her Majesty answered “Amen” and then responded to me by expressing that she too would in turn express a blessing to me on this special occasion! As she is a Bible-reader, I brought with me a copy of ‘The Companion to The High Holy Days Prayer Book’, written by the late Chief Rabbi Lord Jakobovits zt’l. The book contains a selection of his sermons, lectures and radio broadcasts. I received a charming reply to my action from the Queen and her secretaries. I was in turn able to wish Her that She should have pride & joy from Her family, which was very well received.

Q) Having served an array of communities for so many years, what has given you the most satisfaction? Having worked in a ministerial situation for over seventy years I can truly say that what has given me the most satisfaction has been the response from those with whom it has been a pleasure to work with in the cause of communal unity and friendship. Q) You were a Chazzan for many years, can you tell us a little bit about it? At 17 years of age I secured my first job as a Chazzan in Leeds. I officiated there for four years, during the War years. I moved on to being a Chazzan in Brixton, South London for a further 18 years and then finally onto North Hendon Addas for another 5 years. Interestingly, in all my years of being a Chazzan I have never led Shacharis on Yomim Neroim! It bothers me that the popularity of Chazzanus has declined immensely over the years. Chazzanus is definitely taking more of a back-foot now. Young people want to rush through the Service today and do not realise or appreciate the depths and the vast repertoire to Chazzanus. Q) If you had an opportunity to change one thing within the Anglo-Jewish Community, what would it be? I am a strong believer in ‘Communal Shuls’. There are a lot of new minyanim sprouting up that I believe aren’t stable enough. There seems to be a prevalent attitude today of ‘I can go here today, there tomorrow’ – people are getting lost! Furthermore, children used to sit next their parents, the parents next to their own parents – you had 3 generations on a bench. These days people have to wait for their children to come home from Shul in order to begin the meal because they could have very well davened elsewhere. Despite the above, there is so much B’’H that I would not want to change within the AngloJewish Community that is beyond the scope of this Interview!
