Message From The Editor
‘What’s this that’s just arrived through my letterbox?’, I hear you asking! So now is a good time to introduce myself, as well as the Publication itself. My name is Elliot Cohen and I am the Editor of The Suburb Circular. I live in NW London and have been, and still am, the Editor of another local Magazine in an adjacent area. After many months of preparation we are proud to launch The Suburb Circular, a new local monthly Magazine which is hand-delivered doorto-door to homes and businesses within Hampstead Garden Suburb. Besides advertisements relating to local Businesses and Organisations, The Suburb Circular includes features and articles of local interest. In spite of all the technological advances that are part of our modernday life, local communities and local businesses continue to underpin the make-up of our society. I sense that this is a result of British tenacity and a remarkable sense of local pride. Having many friends residing in Hampstead Garden Suburb I am aware of the strong feelings of loyalty and unity that are the hallmark of the neighbourhood. This is clearly reflected by the many local organisations which cater admirably for the needs of its residents. We are really excited and passionate about bringing you a friendly and informative local Magazine, and we hope you enjoy reading it. Preferences do vary though, so if you have any suggestions or comments regarding The Suburb Circular, please do be in touch via the contact details listed at the bottom of the adjacent page. Have a great month and take care,
Elliot

CITRON
When do I need a Business Coach to Increase Profits?
David Citron is an Author, Speaker and Business Coach. He has delivered Speeches and Courses in Business Mastery and Leadership to CEOs and leaders from such Corporates as Deutsche Bank, The Carbon Trust and Standards and Poor. His most recent small-medium business clients have seen increases of 40% in their profit margins and more than doubled their turnover in 12 months. I’m often asked when is the best time in the cycle of a business to take on a business coach? The answer is simple and very Jewish. When do you want your business to take off? Whether your business is in the start-up, growth phase or even the tagnant rut phase it’s time to get yourself a business coach with plenty of experience and a great track record of getting profitable results. Here’s what any great business coach will add to your business: Shorten the Decision Making Process Good, regular decisions are what propel a business forward. A great coach will be a great strategist and guide you towards making your own decisions rapidly and effectively. Time Management Time is more precious than any other resource in your business. To create phenomenal wealth you are going to need to know how to use it on a level which most people will never even experience in their lifetime. Working On not In the Business The reason why most businesses plateau or even worse is that their owner gets so caught up with the details of the business that there is nobody around to grow the business. Great CEOs allocate time to work on the business and coaching sessions will channel this time to the maximum so results come exponentially faster. Spotting Opportunities Most business owners are missing hundreds of opportunities every day to grow their profits. These could be regarding staff management, innovation or marketing. Great business owners know that they cannot see these gems while their head is buried in the sand of day to day details. Top coaches see these opportunities instantly and bring them to the client’s awareness.
Sales Strategies Many business owners feel unsure of the way forward regarding getting their name out effectively and most importantly getting new business in. Great business coaches will have lots of experience regarding what works and what doesn’t in sales and marketing. This will save you a lot of pain and when you put the best strategies into place your customer base will take massive leaps. Work/Life Harmony Work and the rest of life don’t have to be balanced but they mustbe in harmony. For instance more than one business client of mine has had to be helped rise above an addiction. In one case, after stopping, this CEO made more money in the following year than his previous 8 years put together. Create a Vision Which Forces You to Succeed Your mind is a GPS. If you don’t put in specific coordinates into your GPS then your GPS/Mind is worthless to you. As soon as you put the postcode and exact address it will navigate 50,000 roads and tell you the very best way to get there. The Mind GPS only works if you know exactly how to put in the code. Most have no idea. A minority of great coaches show you techniques to programme your mind with goals that actually force you to succeed. Accountability Have you ever found yourself procrastinating on ideas that you know would benefit your business? Top business coaches hold you accountable to the goal you set last week so that there’s nowhere to run except forward. The result? Phenomenal usiness growth in months. In summary it’s a case of the difference between night and day when you have a coach you can trust. Question: ‘When do I need a business coach?’ Answer: ‘If not now, when?’.

To Cloud or not to Cloud? That is the Question!
Some of you will be busy packing your suitcases with swim gear, snorkels and sunglasses and the last thing you’ll want to hear about is cloud. But, not to worry, I’m not talking about the weather here. The type of cloud I mean is something most of you have heard of – cloud-based technology, typically associated with online data storage, but now used in almost every industry. Cloud-based accounting solutions work by the same principle as any other cloud solution. Instead of buying software, downloading it, maintaining it and worrying about data storage, a cloud-based accounting solution allows you to easily login to your accounting books via the web. These books are conveniently stored on the provider’s host. Benefits of Cloud Accounting Agility: Predominantly, the ability to access your accounts from anywhere (even on a boat in the Lake District on an iphone) is what has persuaded many small businesses to go the cloud route. It’s a particularly attractive option for virtual businesses or start-ups that work without formal office premises and that have minimal, mobile staff. Lower costs: Packages for cloud accounting can cost as little as £7 a month. There is a growing number of practices that provide cloud-based accounting services at surprisingly low rates, making outsourced bookkeeping solutions very appealing. Simplicity: New, fully cloud-based accounting software providers such as “Clearbooks” and “Xero” have been developing bookkeeping software with non-experienced bookkeepers in mind, complete with free training and online help. This means that a small business can significantly reduce its own bookkeeping costs and year-end accounting fees by doing some, if not all, the books themselves. Collaboration: With the accounts stored in the cloud, team members and third parties can easily collaborate on data by literally being “on the same page”. Users can make changes that are instantaneously uploaded and viewed by others (e.g. accountants). No more Accountants?: Not quite. There will always be the need for tax advice. Also, even
though some small businesses will opt for bookkeeping themselves, undoubtedly there will be inaccuracies. Crucially, the accountant can ‘dip in’ and spot major errors or transactions that have tax or other recommendations. No more waiting until year end to discover problems that are too late to rectify (a phenomena that accountants know only too well, and that we have on many occasions been able to prevent due to cloud accounting) Accountant as Virtual Financial Director: Here is the real value in cloud accounting. With the technology available today and access to cheaper services, there is an evolving expectation of accountants to deliver “real value”. Traditionally, accountants’ work has been backwards looking and compliance-based. Increasingly, a good accountant is expected to deliver timely, relevant strategic advice and not just “keep score” of last year. This is where cloud accounting is one with a silver lining. Using this technology, the accountant can view daily transactions, become more integrated and eventually embedded with the business. The result is a more thorough understanding of the nature of the business, identifying trends and providing strategic direction. Always put professionalism first: There isn’t a shortage of online or high street kiosk-styled services offering tax returns for £49, but the question is what service you are receiving and what relationship you are building with your accountant. It’s important not to compromise on professional competence as numerous horror stories abound. At Danan Silberstein Chartered Accountants we have developed cloud accounting services. This enables us to provide competitive fees for our basic compliance work, but also allows our clients to benefit from financial and strategic advisory services by seamless integration via the cloud. CITRON Pride Vs Progress
When Mark Thompson got up to speak to a treasure of top Silicon Valley CEOs in April 2000 it was before ITunes had come out. He represented Rioport, a company responsible for popularising MP3 players and was showing off their latest product. Mark was fully invested emotionally and financially in the new MP3 Player - In fact he had just remortgaged his house to fund the move. When Steve Jobs came up to him after the presentation Mark was hoping to hear some words of encouragement from the seasoned techy – perhaps even an investment! Instead Steve commented ‘your gadget is a geeky piece of (let’s say garbage)’. In that moment Mark had two simultaneous feelings which could have propelled him in either of two directions. Firstly, like many would, he felt the need to whack Steve over the head with the microphone in anger at this completely disrespectful attack on his pride and joy. He had everything wrapped up in this great product – how could Steve be so dismissive!!! Yet Mark experienced another feeling. One far more disturbing than the first. He felt the undeniable presence of truth in what Jobs was saying. This gadget really wasn’t elegant or easy to use. Swallowing his pride Mark had a series of dinners with Steve over the coming months. Steve shared his vision of how the digital world would play out over the next decade and Mark took stock - literally. He took his house money and placed it on Apple instead of Rioport (Rio-who?...exactly). Ipod, Iphone, Ipad, Istores lead Mark to cherish the day that he followed his heart feelings of truth rather than heady feelings of pride. This principal is a crucial one in business. Quite often people allow their ego to come between them and success. A great example of this is in learning new ideas. I know people who have actually said to me - ‘you can never
learn something from a book that can make you rich - that’s why I don’t read business books’. This is the sort of attitude that holds people back. I have personally stumbled across single concepts from mentors, books and videos which have made game changing differences to my life and the lives of the people I serve. Allow yourself the humility to learn from all sources to grow, develop and prosper. It is true, some sources are better than others. Just make sure that you are not making that decision based on pride but rather through assessing real evidence based factors such as past results. I’ll give you one more example and this is probably the biggest one. Failure. People want success without failure. Why? Pride. You can’t have true success without failure. True success comes from trying and developing and perfecting through mistakes, muck-ups and rejections. Famed CEO Thomas Watson who brought IBM from weighing machines to become the Google of it’s day, said ‘If you want to increase your success rate, double your failure rate’. Now, if your ego is controlling your decisions you are going to be so caught up with looking good that you will never get to hone your skill, your craft, your product and yourself into something and someone of golden value to the world through the burning hot fiery furnace of failure. The guy who is afraid to look bad will be beaten every time. Challenge your pride, elevate your future. David Citron, MA, is the Director of The UK Centre for Leadership (UKCL) and is a Business, Life and Leadership Coach. David has been invited to speak to executives from many well known corporations and institutions including Deutsche Bank,, The World Bank, General Electric, The Carbon Trust, Deloitte and S&P. He is passionate about supporting CEOs from all sized businesses whether small or large take themselves to the next level through dynamic personal and group coaching. A day in the life of an MP
Of course the easiest thing to say, is that there is no ‘normal’ day. It is true to say that days can be very variable, some paperwork orientated (or more accurately e-mail orientated) and on other days I rarely get to the office, spending the day running between meetings with organisations, constituents or sitting on committees. Monday is the longest day as the last votes (votes can be a single vote at the end of the day or they can be a series of votes throughout the day) start at 10pm. If there is just one vote, I can leave at about 10.20, getting home by 11.30pm. If there are a series of votes then it can be later. As I am a ‘morning person’ the late sittings make the day long. I like early starts so having got my self up and out of the house by 6.10, I usually arrive by 6.45am. Parliament is quiet and I tend to get more done in the first few hours than in the rest of the day! Having bought a large coffee and a pastry I open up the email in box. I never cease to be amazed at how many people are up and sending emails in the early hours of the day. On a ‘normal’ day I receive 200+ emails and I see every one. Most residents will receive the initial response from me, if only outlining what I can do to help. Then my team take over to follow through I have 4.5 staff helping me. The team will then contact whichever third party the NHS, Barnet Homes, the Council, UK Visa & Immigration etc, we need to to try and resolve the issue. Of those 200+ emails, about a third are from a variety of organisations who are simply lobbying - they usually get deleted. About a third are straightforward (this is my opinion on X, what’s your opinion). The remainder involve having to take up the cudgels on behalf of residents. So coffee in hand, I start to clear the overnight emails and glance at the newspapers. Come 8am, cup of tea with PA/Office Manager to go through diary for day/rest of week, look at the Order Paper to review the business in the Chamber and Departmental Questions, chat through cases currently being worked on and generally catch up. The first meeting will usually be at 9am and I allocate time slots in the mornings and in the afternoons for meetings. The meetings could be with constituents who want to discuss an issue or press a point for an organisation they are
involved in or often they will be with Charities arguing a case. I also use this time to catch up key organisations such as the Police, NHS, Council etc. On Mondays the Commons doesn’t start departmental questions or debating legislation until 2.30pm (it allows MPs from across the UK to travel to Westminster from their constituency). I often attend these question times as it is a good way of keeping up to date on what each Government department is doing. After questions, there will be legislation to be debated. Time for meetings or attending debates can be quickly taken out of the diary if I have to support one of the Ministers. I am parliamentary aide to Nick Boles MP, a Minister at Business & Skills and at Education. If he is steering new laws through a committee (where MPs scrutinise a law line by line) I have to attend with him (where I act as a conduit for officials to get information to the Minister and back again) - archaic rules mean that during a debate or committee officials and Ministers can’t be seen to communicate!! Hopefully by 4pm the Committee has finished (they can meet once or they can meet twice a day for several days! I then scurry back to the office to clear emails, catch up on messages and sign letters. In the evenings there will usually be informal meetings eg on topics MPs are campaigning about (I’m involved in some mens health campaigns) or as I Chair the London Conservative MPs Group, that meeting takes place in the evening. By 8pm, I’m ready to grab something to eat. Catch up on more emails, (and have a little quiet time) before moving back towards the Chamber about 9.30pm to hear the closing speeches and then voting! Mr Mike Freer is the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency of Finchley and Golders Green. We are delighted to announce that he has agreed to respond to questions/ concerns regarding Central Government matters. We therefore invite readers to submit these to the Suburb Circular (info@thesuburbcircular. co.uk) for Mr Freer to address via this Column.

FREER A day in the life of an MP
Most parents think long and hard about employing a tutor to assist their child’s learning, taking the time to find the correct person to give their children an educational boost. As parents, we all want our children to achieve their full potential. Whether a child is achieving high standards at school, and the desire is to reach even greater heights, or if the child is having difficulties and the need is to provide further support, the aim is one and the same – to ensure your child’s success. The process of having a tutor to give your child out-of-school hours is one of immense teamwork – between the tutor, the child and the parents. All three parties must be totally committed to the learning process and working in tandem to ensure the child’s needs are being met. Traditionally, many parents only consider using the one-to-one tutoring approach, with the tutor visiting the family home. Whilst this is a tried and tested method, it is very often not as successful as the parents would hope. At home, there are distractions for the pupil, and many children find it hard to associate the home environment with a teaching environment. A child may find this environment intimidating – the teacher is watching them constantly, so the child is under pressure. Furthermore, the tutor coming to your home can only bring with them a limited number of resources, and will find it harder to deviate from the set lesson plan if needed. The good news is that this is not the only way that private tutoring can be conducted. There are plenty of alternatives, which are more successful at generating mental stimulation and keeping children interested. Why use Kip McGrath Edgware? At Kip McGrath, children have the best of both worlds! Our qualified teachers understand how children learn, and are able to teach according to the individual child’s learning style with all resources at hand. Each child has a free assessment to determine their strengths and weaknesses. This results in a unique programme being formed based on their own specific needs. At Kip McGrath there are never more than 5 pupils learning at one time. This means the child is stimulated by the others in the centre to study
and to learn. The small size of the group means the child has one-to-one teaching when they need it, and given independence to develop their skills when they don’t. Children see the others asking for help if they need it, so they have the confidence to do the same. Moreover, as they will be completing different tasks to the others in the group, they will be covering their own individual needs. This programme employs different learning strategies so the child stays focused. By having a classroom-like environment, the child is prepared to learn, yet they are more relaxed which allows them to achieve higher standards. As a result the tutoring session becomes far more productive. At Kip McGrath Edgware you get: •Tailored programmes for your child – your child is an individual and should be taught as such. •Fully supervised, 80 minute sessions •Small group of students (up to 5) per tutor •Innovative programmes unique to Kip McGrath Education Centres that help make learning fun. What programmes we offer: English: Reading and comprehension, writing and spelling; vocabulary development Maths: Basic numeracy, algebra, fractions, combinations, time & money Secondary School entrance exams: Maths, English, verbal & non verbal reasoning Getting ready for school – preparing children for entering reception class Our goal is to: •Improve your child’s confidence •Make learning fun and engaging •Help students reach their full potential Kip McGrath Edgware: The Director of the centre is Jan Moses. Jan has many years of experience teaching in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 within Jewish and secular primary schools across Barnet and Harrow. Jan qualified for her teaching degree at Middlesex University specialising in Primary education. DRUCKER PSSST...Want to Know a Secret?
When prospective new members come to my Slimming World Group, more often than not they want to know ‘The Secret’ The BIG Secret’ - How to LOSE WEIGHT! They would love it if I leant in toward them and whispered in conspiratorial fashion....“The Secret of how to lose weight? Easy, you put on a green hat under a new moon while painting pomegranate juice on your toenails!” Easy, but like many so-called ‘Diet Secrets’, it just doesn’t work. Why? Because the only way to lose weight effectively and efficiently is to have more calories going out than coming in. A calorie controlled diet. But the big problem with a calorie controlled diet is that you can count, and count, and count, thus forgetting to enjoy your food or live your life. So how is FOOD OPTIMIZING the Slimming World eating plan DIFFERENT? Well, it IS a calorie controlled diet but nearly all weighing and measuring associated with such a diet, has already been done for you so that you can focus on filling up on fabulous ‘FREE food’ without stress or feelings of deprivation. Slimming World emphasises food that fills you up, keeps you fuller for longer for the fewest amount of calories. If you’re hungry... you’re doing it wrong. If you’re dieting...you’re doing it wrong. DIETS DON’T WORK. They are temporary ways to restrict yourself, even AFFLICT yourself, until you go back to normal eating. Food Optimizing isn’t a diet - it is a healthy eating plan for life. The Key to making weight-loss stick long-term lies in some surprisingly simple Strategies 1. Eat a Wide Variety of Foods: Variety is the spice of life especially when you’re Food Optimizing. With such a huge list of Healthy, filling foods to choose from, your taste buds will never get bored. The best thing about our eating plan is the choice. That and the emphasis on fresh ingredients rather than processed foods. ‘Free food’ means that there is always something you can eat. Since I joined Slimming World I have never been hungry... apart from on Jewish Fast days!
2. Get Support: with a fantastic network of friends behind you in group you can’t help but stay on track. When you have a good week the group needs you. When you have a bad week you need the support of the group. The Talmud says that “When Someone comes to Purify (improve oneself) THEY support him” Who are “They”? Rabbi A J Twerski says, it’s the support one gets from a group! 3. Plan and Monitor: It’s easy to be tempted by fatty foods if you don’t plan ahead. Having delicious fruit handy can help save you from the temptation of Chocolate and crisps. Fill in a food diary. A food diary is about honesty, accuracy and taking responsibility for one’s eating and drinking. Writing a shopping list helps too – but you have to stick to it. Don’t go shopping when you’re hungry! Consider shopping online. 4. Take up Regular Activity: Dusting off your trainers can speed up your weight loss, but it’s important to build up gradually. Introducing additional moderate physical activity as part of the fabric of your life- starting with 7 minutes per day. When I first joined slimming world 5 years ago it took me 20 minutes a day to put my socks on. A flight of stairs was a challenge. I decided to use the stairs at work, then I started walking round the block then running to work. Where am I now? In the last 12 months I have run 2 marathons and cycled 2000 miles. 5. Do It for Yourself: The biggest motivator has to be YOU. If you’re trying to lose weight because you’ve been told to by a GP, or a well intentioned family member, you are you are unlikely to be committed enough to succeed. Do it for you, for your own reasons. Don’t be rushed. Set your own pace, set yourself a weekly target. Be realistic in your set target and time allowed to get there. If you fall off the wagon don’t beat yourself up; just draw a line and start again. Michael Drucker has been a Slimming World consultant for 4 years. He joined Slimming World in 2009 weighing 28 stone. He lost 14 Stones, the first 13 stone in 14 months.

The Perfect Balance
Those of you out there who have attempted to lose weight know that starving yourself isn’t enjoyable. Additionally, even if you were to lose the weight, you would usually put the weight straight back on as soon as you stop. Diet derives from the word daita in Greek. It translates as healthful living according to proper selection of food. So how do we balance healthy and enjoyable eating yet still lose weight? There is so much food out there that can make our lives enjoyable and still benefit our health. I like to help people achieve this by following the GI diet. What does GI mean (in simple terms)? GI stands for glycaemic index, a medical term used to measure the speed at which carbohydrates break down in the digestive system to form glucose (sugar). The higher the GI the faster the breakdown. This results in one being hungry again sooner, and also means that the body will use this “easy energy” rather than using its body fat. We therefore aim for low GI foods, of course combining that with lean protein, and the correct fats, to ensure a balanced diet. What is BMI? The body mass index is a measure of relative weight based on an individual’s mass and height. The BMI is used in a wide variety of contexts as a simple method to assess how much an individual’s body weight departs from what is normal or desirable for a person of his or her height. I have taken the GI diet and combined it with calorie counting according to a person’s BMI. I therefore give each person an individual diet according to their needs. This combination has had fantastic results. Now you can eat and still lose weight. You will feel full for longer and also feel less bloated. My clients have all said they feel brilliant. I studied this approach in Michlelet Shelem college in Israel and with Stonebridge Associated Colleges.
Just on a side note… Some health benefits of common foods: Carrots : Carrot derives from the parsley family. It has carotene which is converted to vitamin A, which prevents high blood pressure and lowers cholesterol. It can enhance breast milk. It is good for the skin, hair and nails. Raw carrot has beta carotene , which is an antioxidant. It prevents infections (such as urinary tract) Carrots are helpful with blood poisoning since they help in haemoglobin formation. There are some theories that its beneficial for alzheimers since it helps with all areas of blood flow. Pineapple: Pineapple has bromlin which is good for protein digestion. It prevents blood clot formation and breaks up fibre. It is not excessively fattening. It has high potassium. Pineapple is beneficial for thyroid problems. Some say it prevents morning sickness. It is beneficial for arthritis and back pain. Spinach: Spinach has choline, which is good for the neurological system and nervous system. It stabilises blood sugar, helps fight cancer and has a very large amount of vitamin A. Garlic: Garlic detoxifies the body and protects against infections. It lowers blood pressure and improves circulation. It aids in the treatment of arthritis, asthma, cancer, colds and flu. It is good for virtually any disease or infection. Green tea: Combats mental fatigue. May lower the risk of oesophageal, stomach, colon and skin cancer. Caution: should not be used in large quantities during pregnancy or while nursing. Honey: Honey is a highly concentrated source of many essential nutrients, including large amounts of carbohydrates some minerals, b-complex vitamins and vitamins C, D and E. It is a natural antiseptic. It is generally twice as sweet as sugar.
I will inform you about many more of the fascinating and delicious foods around us. Give it a try! Yehudit Lerner studied at Michlelet Shelem (Israel) and Stonebridge Associated Colleges She can be contacted on 07791 460 372

Hypnotherapy and Weight Loss
Since Pesach the majority of my clients have come to see me for weight loss. Without exception all of them had tried diets, and in one case also something involving surgery. So why didn’t any of them succeed? The reason is called “willpower”. If any one of these clients had had a strong enough willpower they would have won their battle. There are many causes for becoming overweight. Obviously it is because of taking in more calories than are required. But the question is why? Why do people eat more than they need? There are a few answers. • Comfort Eating • Associations with past events • Programmed by parents as a child not to waste food. • Stress • Emotional motivators These are just some of the reasons, the list could be very long. Many of the people that come to see me for weight loss have other issues which are part and parcel to the habit of overeating. So what can Hypnotherapy do to help these people? All of the causes come from the subconscious part of the mind. The subconscious mind as opposed to the conscious mind is the home for long term memories, emotions, feelings, habits, imagination, and something that is called “protection”. All of the “departments” of the subconscious mind have records of everything that a person has done, since birth and perhaps even before. This is where past life regression comes in and is the subject of a future article perhaps.
not to leave food on your plate, not to waste food, people in India are starving so finish your food, and of course Jewish mums bless them want to feed their family nicely don’t they. All these experiences are in your subconscious and collectively have a direct responsibility for causing our decision making whether for good or for bad. That is where the “protection” part of the subconscious comes in to play. Based on past experiences “protection” will maintain what it believes to be good for the person. A person also has a conscious mind which is the home for willpower and short term memories. The conscious part of a person’s mind is smaller and much less powerful than the much larger subconscious. Any ideas coming into a person’s mind first comes in to the conscious mind and then goes through a process whereby they are verified against existing information stored in the subconscious. Fine, now perhaps we can now understand why we have bad habits, poor self esteem, negative or positive thoughts. But what can hypnotherapy do to help? Well, a skilled hypnotherapist can engage with the subconscious mind as well as the conscious, and effect changes. These changes could be to change the idea of eating to save children starving in India, eating because it makes me feel good, or any other emotional need. Whatever the cause the hypnotherapist will locate and fix the cause, leaving the client with a new set of ideas in the subconscious which will then allow the “protection” reason to accept the new ideas of eating less, eating more healthily, and basically allow the person to do whatever he/she needs to do to attain their goal, whether it be to lose weight, or stop any other life restricting habit.
All of these records are what makes a person what they are. They cause the feelings: - likes, dislike, fears, confidence, etc.
So if you have tried all of the diets and failed, or are troubled by a life limiting habit, perhaps it’s time to try something else.
These feelings are what influences a person’s thoughts, and decisions.
David has a Diploma in Advanced Hypnotherapy and has also obtained certification from The National Guild of Hypnotists. David can be contacted on: 07867 115 774 or by email: hypnotherapist@amstell.co.uk

Who are you? I started LEXEVENTS after working in the Charity Sector and running high level fundraising events and dealing with committees of stressed business people who were trying to make a big impact on a small budget. I was approached by various donors to arrange their private social parties and events and it grew form there till I started LEXEVENTS in 2002. So what exactly does LEXEVENTS do? We can do as little or as much as a client requires, so whether it is an hourly consultation to help someone get started on their plans for their event or to take on a whole event from A-Z involving budgets, guests lists, advising the client and then booking vendors for them and obviously be present with the LEXEVENTS team from the days before the event up till the last guest leaves. We can work on any budget and so this does not alienate anyone from working with us! But surely your clients are very wealthy to need to use an Event Planner? It is a total misconception! We charge an hourly rate right up to an all-inclusive fee so – for instance - a couple planning their son’s Bar Mitzvah on a modest budget may plan to meet with me for 2-3 hours over 2 meetings to use the time to work out the best use of their money whilst still hosting the event they want but without second guessing themselves as to whether the have gone to the best/most professional/experienced vendors to create their dream party. Of course I do have some wealthy clients whose budgets are larger than most BUT – as I say to all clients – EVERYONE is on a budget, I am yet to meet someone who says ‘Keep on spending’! Do you work abroad or only in London? I have done most of my events in London but also in Manchester, Israel, New York and almost did one in Rome but the clients decided to keep it on home ground in London! How do clients find you? Mostly word of mouth, recommendations or they see me at an event and approach me. I am so lucky to have a lot of repeat business such as a girl’s Bat Mitzvah, 21st birthday party her engagement party, Wedding and even the Brit Milah of her son! In most cases from working so long with a family we become close and when I
mins with get a call to arrange their next event I know their style, guest list and type of event they want to create so it is a pleasure! What makes and event good or bad? I love events that run smoothly, with happy, relaxed clients, a great atmosphere and the most important of all the logistics – which are normally behind the scenes and unknown to the client – of the event run to plan makes it a good event for me and the team. The bad tends to be when the timings so off because the Bride or Groom got stuck in traffic and everything runs late or someone who is supposed to be speaking for 5-7 minutes runs over to 20 minutes and the ice cream is melting in the kitchens as a result! How do you handle the highs and lows? I do miss the daily talks with clients after an event but love the emails and thank you cards that come from happy clients so that is a high! The lows can be nerve-wracking, for instance I had a client who booked her Band to arrive from Israel on the morning of the wedding only for them to be turned away at customs so not only did I have to calm the band leader down but break the news to the clients whilst locating a new band who were actually brilliant in the end!!! What are the biggest misconceptions about the Events Business? I would say that people think it is all glamorous but the truth is that if that is what people see then we have done a good job as they don’t see the tireless meetings, early set up hours and the work behind the scenes. What is the best advice for someone wanting to go into the business? I get calls every week from people wanting to break into the market and always suggest starting with a hotel management course or to get work (paid or voluntary) with a Charity who does events, a Caterer or Bands as the event is only ever as good as the work that goes into it beforehand and that the logistics are key so learn the basics before you start! Personal Training
Reasons to train with weights. Light resistance training has a mountain of benefits and using weights produces faster results: Resistance Training with light to moderate weights is probably the most effective way to change your body shape quickly and safely to get fitter. An experienced fitness trainer can make sure that your technique is correct while training. This will help prevent injury particularly if you are a beginner. Many women are afraid their body will suddenly look like the Hulk! I have been a Personal Trainer for 18 years and that is the most common question I am asked. Unless a woman plans to work out for a minimum 2 hours per day, 6 days a week lifting excessive weight coupled with a very monitored food regime this will not happen. Female bodybuilders have to work really hard to achieve their shape. A few sessions in the gym every week will not do that. Here are some reasons! Posture will improve - It is important to do an all round workout for the body. Chest, back and stomach muscles that are equally toned will prevent back problems and improve posture. A back without muscle tone may increase the risk of a dowager’s hump where the head feels heavy to lift and falls forward. Muscle tone will keep the torso strong and hopefully prevent pain. Legs - work all the leg muscles - not just the quads (thigh muscle) so the entire leg has muscle tone. Obesity -Gaining some muscle versus fat may increase your metabolic rate by up to 15%. So reducing food intake and exercise means that the average person will see results by a couple of sessions a week. Osteoporosis- Bone density is increased so as we start to lose balance with age, the likelihood of breaking something if we fall is reduced due to stronger bones. Stability and balance - this is improved. Helps prevent heart disease - proven by medical studies. Happy- Increases our mood and helps with depression as our happy hormones (endorphins) are released.
Generally all ages including children feel better when getting some exercise. Tips for beginning successful training. Working out with a Personal Trainer will help with your technique and effectiveness of your workout. It is important for a fitness professional to show you the correct ways to lift weights to prevent injury. Whether you are working out with a trainer or on your own, here are some tips. Eat something! Working out in the morning without drinking or eating anything can result in dizziness and a lack of energy in your workout. An effective training session can be as short as 30 minutes if you are a beginner or a busy person. Warm up for at least 5 minutes to slowly raise your heart rate. If you do not own weights make use of what you have in the kitchen. Mini water bottles are great to go walking with and used as light weights for lunges, squats and bicep curls etc. Don’t hold your breath! You do not want to pass out! Exhale at the hardest point of the exercise through your mouth. Inhale through your nose at the easiest. Make sure your equipment is safe. An old running machine at home may need a service to make sure the running belt is not sticking. Stretch at the end of the session when your muscles are warm. Avoid ‘swinging weights or throwing them down. Learn how to pick up a weight safely from a trainer if you want to work out on your own. Check with your doctor before you start and whether you have a pre-existing condition. If a joint hurts - stop - listen to your body. Find exercises you enjoy as this will mean your workouts will be fun and you will continue to workout so that you reach your goals. cazfreedman@hotmail.com www.trainingbycaroline.co.uk mobile: 07973541015 Adults, teenagers, children and small groups. CITRON 3 Simple Ways to Get Happy NOW
Quit Comparing With Others Pete Cashmore was a 19 year old Scot, writing a blog from his bedroom in his parents’ house. 7 years later, Pete’s blog, Mashable.com is worth $200 Million. You may assume that Pete’s journey up was just one moment of ecstasy after another but Pete says no. Actually as he got more and more in his life he became more and more miserable. This was because as he reached each tier of success he was then hanging around people even more successful than he and the natural human trait is to compare. He then stumbled upon a huge secret of happiness. He realised that his only route to contentment each day was to ask himself the following incredibly powerful question; ‘How can I be a better me than I was 24 hours ago?’. Stop comparing with others and channel that mind energy towards comparing with yourself. When you do this the game of life will be set up perfectly to cater for your own custom made progress and happiness. Validate Your Actions Daily A revealing study has shown that people can achieve a 25% increase in their happiness in just 3 weeks by implementing a 2 minute daily activity. Each day, all the participants had to do was to acknowledge three positive actions which they had done during the day. The actions did not have to be ground breaking and some were down right mundane. How much would you pay to be 25% happier?! Set a fixed time daily reminder now to take your 2 minutes a day. Keep Your Energy Levels High I was once coaching a university student who was always happy at home between terms but unhappy on campus during term time. He couldn’t quite understand it. He
couldn’t quite understand it. He loved his course, he loved his university friends, and he loved the campus. What was wrong? Then he had an epiphany. At home he was always given 3 square meals a day by mum. At home he ate like a king. At Uni he missed breakfast, muddled through the day on a packet of crisps and then ate some unhealthy convenience foods for supper. His realisation was seemingly obvious and yet it had slipped from under his radar for months. His grumpiness was down to his hunger. When we go around with low blood sugar levels all day our mood corresponds. Equally, I’ve met so many people who are going around like dried prunes all day because they are simply not drinking enough water. I’ve never met an energetic prune! First thing in the morning your body craves water. Answer its call with two large glasses of the clear stuff. Then work your way onto a breakfast fit for a king, starting with fruit and making sure your meal is rich in protein e.g. eggs to sustain your mood and focus so you can be at your optimum throughout the day.

By Dean Dunham of You and Your Rights
Neighbours Trees - Your Rights
Over the last few months I have received lots of questions about what rights are in place when a neighbours tree encroaches into your garden. Here’s what you need to know before you get out your hacksaw and start chopping branches off: Can I cut my neighbour’s tree back? If your neighbour’s tree hangs over into your land you should firstly ask your neighbour to trim back the tree. If they refuse or ignore your request, you are well within your rights to trim the tree back yourself but only the parts that overhang your land and you can only trim back to the boundary line. There is, however, an exception to the above when there is a Tree Preservation Order in place protecting the tree. If this is the case you will need to seek authority from the local authority before taking any steps. I live in a conservation area. Trees are thought to contribute to the character of conservation areas, so even if the tree in question isn’t subject to a preservation order, if you live in one of these areas, you’ll need to contact the council to give notice of proposed work. This applies to trees with a trunk diameter greater than 75mm measured 1.5m above ground level. You can’t start work before a six week notice period has elapsed unless the council gives you permission to go ahead before then. Dead, dying and dangerous trees are exempt, but you’ll still need to check with the council to ensure this applies to your tree. Once again, you can be prosecuted and fined if you don’t follow the rules. My neighbour’s tree is dangerous, what can I do? In England and Wales, local authorities have powers to deal with trees on private property which are on the point of causing damage. A local authority can:• make the tree safe, if it is on the point of causing damage and are asked to do so by the owner of the land on which the tree stands. The local authority will recover the costs of doing this from the owner. • make a tree safe on someone else’s land, if asked to do so by a neighbour whose property is in imminent danger from the tree and the owner of the land on which the tree stands is not known.
which is on the point of causing damage to the property of a neighbour and that neighbour asks the local authority to take action. The owner of the tree must comply with the notice. If they do not, the local authority will do the necessary work and recover the costs from the owner. The owner can appeal to the county court against the notice. If you want the local authority to take action, you will need to find out which department deals with dangerous trees as this varies from one local authority to another. You can then ask this department to check the condition of the tree. It is up to the local authority to decide if the tree is on the point of causing damage. If they consider it is not on the point of causing damage, they don’t have to take any action. An overhanging tree may also be a danger. For example, most parts of a yew tree are poisonous. If any damage or injury is caused, the tree owner will be liable to pay compensation if a person affected brings a claim for damages. My neighbour’s tree is blocking out my light There are no laws that allow a right to light per se and you will be unable to force the neighbour to do anything. But if the tree is blocking light from a window in your house or a green house, you can acquire the right to light with the help of your local authority and you should contact them first to see how helpful they might be. If you have enjoyed a certain level of light for 20 uninterrupted years the law states that it is reasonable for you to expect the same level of light and you can go to court for relief. You should also check your deeds to see if they contain a covenant stating that your neighbour must not block your light. If I cut my neighbour’s tree can I dispose of the branches? You are actually required by law to hand the cut branches back to your neighbor as they form part of the tree that is their property. However, unless it’s a fruit tree it is unlikely that they will want them back as they will only have to dispose of the debris. You should ask them if they do want the branches back and if they say ‘no’ - record it in writing before disposing of them. COMPUTER
RENDEL
MATTERS
Password Panics (or not)
Answer me these questions: 1. Am I concerned about computer security?
as that is the level of security you currently are using.
2. How many secure websites do I use where my personal information is available?
Now, many secure websites are insisting on secure passwords that have a minimum of 8 characters of which one must be a number, another a capital and another a symbol. Certainly the more complex a password is - the more difficult it is to crack it, but do you use the same password for all secure websites. This might make it easier to remember but this in itself carries a risk. Every now and again nefarious persons have managed to hack into websites and have stolen the lists of the passwords of its users. If your password is among them, and it is used for every secure website you visit, then you have given away the keys to the kingdom.
3. How many different passwords do I use? 4. How secure are my passwords? For most people the answer to the first question might well colour your answers to the remainder. If you are not concerned about computer security there are only two situations where this is not an issue. The first is that you do not use a computer, smart phone or tablet at all. The second is that you do use a computer but it is not connected to the internet in any shape or form. This is almost impossible with smart phones or tablets that are almost useless without a connection to the internet or phone network. So, if you are using a computer, smart phone or tablet then it is highly probable that you are attached to the internet and if you are then your security is at risk. One danger is of viruses and other malware that can be picked up from the internet or by email. These can be combated by using proprietary anti-virus and anti-malware software. This article is not about viruses or malware but I would be delighted to assist anyone who has concerns regarding such matters. Another danger is failure to take security seriously. For the average person using the internet for banking, shopping or email every such website requires a password for access. So the chances are you will have a good many websites where a password is needed and also you might need one to log in to your computer. Now a password is only secure if it is something no-one is likely to guess. So don’t use the name of your favourite pet or your date of birth or anything that can obviously be traced back to you. If you do you might as well hand over the keys to your car or house to the possible hacker
So you need different passwords for different websites, and a way or remembering all of them. One way of doing this is to create a password made up of two unconnected random words with a letter capitalised and a number or numbers or a symbol inserted. An example being ‘wash82Clip’. As they are proper words they are relatively easy to remember so you could have a collection of such passwords. Don’t write them down!!! Of course you could enter them on a document or spreadsheet on your computer and have this locked with a master password. Then the only password you need to remember is the master password as the others are locked within the document. If this is your preferred course I can show you how to achieve this. Another way to do this is with a password vault. This is a commercial system that generates and stores secure passwords. There are those that will even enter the password for you. Some are free and some carry a fee. Again I can provide guidance. Eric Rendel

MATTERS
Servicing Your Car
An MOT is not the same as a service A recent survey surmised that most people think that a service is just an MOT with another name and feel cheated that cars expect to have a paid checkup twice yearly. However, the two actually perform very different functions. “An MOT and a scheduled service are not related, per se,” explains Diane de Voghel of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). “A regular service is essential to take care of the car and the wear and tear of its parts and fluids. The MOT is an annual safety inspection – it is not designed to repair or replace worn vehicle components.” It is perhaps useful to use the comparison of a vaguely inebriated man - the MOT would check he could walk and talk and get himself home without endangering himself and others. The service, however, would ply that man with coffee until he was sober, put him through an intensive fitness programme and then give careful consideration to providing a new liver. Essentially, you are not being cheated by taking your car to the garage twice a year. In fact, the two visits are essential to maintain a healthy vehicle.
A full service history will also help you command a better price when selling your car. How often should I have my car serviced? The regularity of your car’s service depends on the make and model, not to mention your own usage. However, experts say that a car should be serviced between MOTs, so at least once a year. If you drive an older car or tend to rack up a high annual mileage, your car may require more regular servicing. Don’t Ignore That Light If the Check Engine light comes on, what do you do? The most obvious answer, of course, is to get the engine checked. However, many people do nothing, perhaps fearing an expensive repair bill. Some drivers with older cars want to squeeze out as many remaining miles as possible without visiting a garage. This can be a false economy as many times, although, the car seems to be running ok it could cause excess fuel consumption or worse, it can be causing damage to other engine components.
A service will save you money A healthy vehicle is a more affordable vehicle. “An unserviced vehicle is likely to have a shorter life expectancy and higher fuel costs, whilst potentially being more unsafe,” says de Voghel. Put simply, oil is the lifeblood of your vehicles’ engine. If not serviced regularly the oil and filter will become blocked and cause premature wear and tear within the engine. This, in turn, can break the engine, and obviously, the cost of an oil change is far less than the cost of a new engine. Every service is tailored to meet the specific requirements of your vehicle and includes the correct oil and components. Not having a service can have an adverse impact on insurance claims Not having had a service wouldn’t necessarily invalidate a claim – but if it’s declared a ‘writeoff’ the service history is taken into account when calculating its pre-accident value, which would mean a lower valuation.
At EZ Motor Repair LTD your car will be diagnosed using a specialist diagnostic computer for a minimal fee. The fee is refunded if the fault is rectified by us. An illuminated engine management light displayed on your dashboard does not always indicate a definite fault. Modern vehicles ECUs (Engine Control Unit) are extremely capable of compensating for anomalies with the running of the engine. However, this usually comes at a cost to fuel consumption and if left unchecked the problem will intensify the problem.
