ITitle Tntroduction Tit tle The Leaving Certificate Applied is a distinct, self-contained two-year programme aimed at preparing students for adult and working life. The programme puts an emphasis on forms of achievement and excellence, which the established Leaving Certificate has not recognised in the past. The Leaving Certificate Applied was introduced to recognise the talents of all students and provide opportunities for development in terms of responsibility, self-esteem and self-knowledge. It is an innovative programme in the way students learn, in what they learn and in the way their achievements are assessed. The two-year programme consists of four, half-year blocks called Sessions and achievements are credited in each of these Sessions. Tittle Introduction Title le Leaving Certificate Applied Assessment The Leaving Certificate Applied is a single award made on the basis of credits accumulated over four sessions and in final examinations. A candidate may accumulate a maximum of 200 credits. Students who successfully complete the Leaving Certificate Applied programme are awarded a certificate from the State Examinations Commission. The Leaving Certificate Applied is awarded at 3 levels. Pass 120 credits (60% – 69%) Merit 140 credits (70% – 84%) Distinction 170 credits (85% – 100%) Student achievement and performance in the Leaving Certificate Applied is recorded in three modes as follows: • satisfactory completion of modules: 62 credits 31% • performance of student tasks: 70 credits 35% • performance in a terminal examination: 68 credits 34% MODULES Forty four modules are completed over the two years of the programme and credits are awarded for the satisfactory completion of a module. At the end of each session the student is credited on satisfactory completion of the appropriate modules. In order to be awarded credit, students must complete each module by: (i) attending the classes and out-of-school activities related to the module and (ii) completing the Key Assignments related to the module. A minimum attendance of 90% is required. Where there is absence due to exceptional circumstances, this must be verified by the school. TASKS The candidate completes seven Student Tasks over the two years. Each task represents a significant piece of work (at least 10 hours). The task enables the candidate to integrate learning and practical experiences from the different courses and modules of the LCA programme. To receive credits for a student task the candidate must: • Produce authentic evidence of task completion • Produce a task report • Present for interview (personal Reflection Task does not require an interview) TERMINAL EXAMS Final examinations are given in the following areas: • Gaeilge Chumarsaideach • English and Communication • Modern European Languages (French, Spanish, German and Italian) • Social Education • Mathematical Applications • Vocational Specialisms (2 Specialisms to be taken by each candidate). 5
Introduction Leaving Certificate Applied Student Contract ATTENDANCE A minimum 90% attendance is a basic requirement of the Leaving Certificate Applied. Lengthy or repeated absence must be covered by a doctor’s cert. Any holidays taken during the course of the two year programme will not be accepted as a legitimate absence and may result in participants losing out on credits. APPLICATION TO CLASS WORK We require every student do his or her best in relation to class work. Credit is not given for work that is not considered to be the best that a student can do, regardless of quality. WORK EXPERIENCE Work experience forms a core to Leaving Certificate Applied. Students must arrange their own work experience placements. It is important that students choose their work experiences carefully. It is recommended that work experience be completed in at least 3 different career areas. Students are not allowed to complete their work experience in a work place in which they already have a part- time job. For each work experience placement students must complete satisfactorily and return their Work Experience Diary. Employer Report Cards must also be returned. Failure to return or complete satisfactorily the above two documents will result in students losing vital credits. Students are monitored carefully on Work Experience placements and where possible a member of the teaching staff will visit and interview both the student and their employer. BEHAVIOUR Pupils will be expected to adhere to the college/school ethos and rules as laid out in the college/school journal.
I have read and understood the above student contract and agree to follow its contents Student Signature: Parents / Guardians Signature: Date:

Mathematical Applications Module 1 MATHEMATICS FOR LIVING Key Assignments Students must complete at least four key assignments from the following list for module one: I have completed and recorded an exercise in counting and tallying which was cross-checked by other members of my class. I have estimated the length, width and height of several pieces of furniture at home and checked these measurements using a measuring instrument and I have made a table of my results. I have co-operated with another student in measuring a number of diameters and circumferences of circles and then finding π. I recorded my results and then used the formula A = πr2 to find the surface area of the discs. I worked with another student and looked up timetables for buses and/or trains and calculated the time it would take to get to several other places in Ireland, away from home. I made a time table showing all the times including stop over time. I made a table to record the heights of students in my class. I then made a grouped table showing the number of students in various height intervals and I wrote each down as a fraction of the total. I then used the calculator to convert the fractions to decimals and then converted the decimals to percentages. I made a table to record the units used, as given on a household bill (telephone, gas, electric or other such) over a six month period. I made a graph to illustrate the usage. I calculated the total paid for the period. I calculated the average daily usage for the period and the average cost per day. Signed:

Mathematical Applications Module 2 ENTERPRISE MATHEMATICS Key Assignments Students must complete at least four key assignments from the following list for module two: I made up a wages amount from information on time, rates per hour and overtime. I calculated taxable pay when given gross income and tax free allowance. I calculated tax payable for the period. I calculated total deductions and net pay from given figures and gross wages. I made out an invoice for at least six items, added on VAT and a carriage charge and gave the total invoice amount. I made out a lodgment based on a case study where amounts were in coins, notes, cheques and euro cheques and I used the conversion rate to present the total lodgment in pounds. I worked in a group where each one of us converted five different amounts, in pounds, to a different foreign currency and then converted that foreign currency to euro. We then converted these to US Dollars. I worked with a group to agree a budget for a small club. Income would come from members’ subscriptions, a window cleaning fund-raiser and a cake sale. Expenses would include bus rental, prizes, replacement equipment and postage (or other similar). I kept records of our final budget. I recorded information of business transactions and used graphs and charts to make an oral presentation to the class.

Mathematical Application Module 3 MATHEMATICS FOR LEISURE AND CIVIC AFFAIRS Key Assignments Students must complete at least four key assignments from the following list for module three: I used a stop-watch to time a race over a known distance. I calculated the average speed in km per hour and kept a detailed record. I made an oral presentation to the class. As part of a small group I researched, recorded and tabulated scores in a sporting event over a period of time and I made a presentation of the findings. I looked up dimensions for a sports area and drew it to scale using mathematical instruments. I was a member of a group that researched the costs for a group event and prepared a report for the class. I recorded my contribution and the group results and I took part in the presentation to the whole class. I got information on holidays in a foreign country and prepared a budget for the travel costs, accommodation and spending money I would need. I calculated the total in pounds and converted this into a foreign currency using exchange rate tables. I also investigated and reported on the climate of the destination country in comparison with Ireland. I investigated a recent (or last) election (local, national or European) conducted under the PR system. I recorded all the facts relating to the number of seats, the number of candidates, the electorate, the number who voted and the spoiled votes. I calculated the quota and compared this with the first preference votes for each candidate, noting by how much each had exceeded the quota or were short of the quota. I recorded the total first preference votes for each candidate. I converted these to percentages of the total valid poll and made out a bar chart and a pie chart to illustrate my findings.

Mathematical Applications Module 4 MATHEMATICS FOR WORKING LIFE Key Assignments Students must complete at least four key assignments from the following list for module four: I computed and presented all the figures for a wages slip showing details of earnings and deductions. I used a spreadsheet to ‘sum’ amounts and to do some formulae calculations. I carried out a small stocktaking exercise, estimated the cost of the items and made a presentation of my work. I tabulated and presented results from a periodic study/research exercise which required the use of at least one piece of measuring or metering equipment. I calculated the price for a job which included estimates for labour, materials, overheads, VAT and a profit margin. I reviewed my work for the four modules and made a presentation reflecting how much I achieved and where mathematical applications might help me in future.

Social Education Module 1 SOCIAL AND HEALTH EDUCATION Key Assignments I completed exercises and worksheets on assertive, aggressive and passive behaviour and different communication styles. I collected information on healthy lifestyles and made a plan to improve one aspect of my own lifestyle. As a member of a small group, I collected information from magazines and newspapers and used it to make a collage illustrating ways in which the media promote sex-role stereotyping. I presented a report on a drug in which I described five things that I learned about the drug, its effects and the risks involved in taking it.

Social Education Module 2 MY COMMUNITY Key Assignments Four Key Assignments are to be undertaken. One of these must be a group activity and one must be an out-of-school activity. I contributed several images/newspaper cuttings to a class collage about our local area. I took part in a class discussion about Our Local Area in the Past. I contributed to three different topics on this issue during the discussion. I interviewed a senior citizen from my local community about life in the past. I designed and presented a simple leaflet about five different organisations providing a service for young people in my area. I plotted a long distance journey by road on a map from my home to another point more that one hundred kilometres away. On this map I marked in the major towns, the distances to them and the distance between them. I also showed an alternative route to this point using a different mode of transport. I went to my local library and got the names of at least five useful resources/books on the local history of my area. I took part in a class survey to plot on a map the litter bins provided by the local authority/authorities on my route to school. Signed:

Social Education Module 3 CONTEMPORARY ISSUES 1 Key Assignments Four Key Assignments are to be undertaken. One of these must be a group activity, one must be an out-of-school activity. I took part in a role-play (either as a participant or observer) and recorded my observations about a situation where the denial of a human right was at issue. I informed the class about a human rights issue/campaign I found in the newspaper or elsewhere. I created an A1 sized promotional poster upholding one of the Rights in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. I explained to my class three things I considered right and three things I considered wrong with regard to a particular contemporary issue. I contacted an organisation/centre outside school that had information about a contemporary issue and gave a report to my class about what I had found out. With other members of my class I organised a survey on attitudes in our local area to a particular contemporary issue.
