Dear Parents/Guardians: I am writing to let you know that the distribution of Chromebooks to all students has begun. We are committed to doing everything we can to ensure student use of the Chromebooks is done in a safe manner. To this end, we have discussed, and will continue to discuss, digital citizenship and safe computing with students and staff. We have entered into an agreement with Google to provide free access to Google Apps for Education for all of our students in grades 9 – 12, as well as all professional staff in the District. Within Google Apps for Education, students and staff will have the ability to utilize Gmail, web-based word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, calendar, unlimited Cloud storage (Google Drive), and applications found in the Chrome store. The Google accounts will allow students and staff with Internet access to collaborate with their peers and faculty members in real time, regardless of their location. Additionally, students and staff will no longer need to be in the same place when working on group or collaborative projects. The Google Apps accounts will be housed within a "closed" domain, limiting the ability of students and staff to collaborate with individuals who are not affiliated with Southern York County School District. The Chromebook is protected by the District’s content filter regardless of location and time of use. Gmail safety features include: 

Ability to safely send / receive emails with fellow students, as well as your teachers, inside the district and outside to District pre-approved addresses (e.g. textbook sites). This means students only have the ability to send and receive emails with fellow students, teachers, and staff. They will be able to send and receive emails from pre-configured trusted outside mail services. (Anything without the @sycsd.org and/or student.sycsd.org domain extensions). External email for the purposes of online materials and textbooks may be activated for registration and periodic maintenance. The external use of email beyond SYCSD purposes will be limited and monitored for these purposes.

All district email is safely archived for both security and legal purposes and can be reviewed at any time by authorized district personnel.

The purpose of using the Gmail service with our students is strictly for academic purposes and should be treated as such.

Ability to sync your district Gmail account with your personal smart phone or tablet devices.

All Gmail and other electronic activity traffic is CIPA and FERPA (link to CIPA, etc.) compliant monitored, secured and archived.

EXCELLENCE can be attained if you... CARE more than others think is wise...RISK more than others think is safe... DREAM more than others thinks is practical...EXPECT more than others think is possible.
