I did it! A massive Thank You to all those who grabbed a copy of the first edition magazine October 2019. Your support was very much appreciated. We are now into our second edition of The Sustainable Traveller magazine and excited to bring you even more ways to be sustainable when travelling. So let's talk bikes! Bike riding is one of my favourite things to do and I was elated (and determined) to finally teach my children to ride a bike. And while they were scooting and learning to balance on two wheels, I was researching some awesome bike tour companies and itineraries I just had to share with you. The freedom to explore on 2 wheels, powered by sheer determination and human strength, is such a cool way to travel and it has minimal carbon output too. Plus it's seriously fun! It's true when they say 'biking is the new golfing' and it caters for everyone, from families to single travellers, friends and couples. I really hope you will feel inspired with our bike tour guide for your next trip away. Mother Nature Thanks You

TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED ON YOUR SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL JOURNEY Chable Resort and Spa, Riviera Maya, Cancun Image of our Founder Dayana Brooke
Reusable bottle It's super easy to pack a bottle that is reusable to refill with water when travelling. You will find most hotels, lodges, airlines, airports, train stations and cities now have water fountains. So refilling your own bottle on the go is super easy.
Say no to anything plastic and single use Our planet is drowning in our single use plastic waste. Learn to say no to any single use items from cutlery to bags, straws, bottles, packaging and coffee cups. If it's unavoidable, try and find alternative options that can be reused, repurposed or recycled.
Support local communities Use your tourism dollars wisely and ensure it is spent and staying in local communities and businesses. This will help support families, education, infrastructure and community empowerment. Want to keep up to date? Connect with us on social for daily posts @thesustainabletraveller
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO TRAVEL? The opportunity to learn about local cultures, customs and languages, inspires many of us to travel to unknown destinations and cities each year. According to Virtuoso travel network, Learning is a 'strong reason why people love to travel. They want to experience something unfamiliar and leave with new skills and knowledge'. Humans have a desire to continuously learn new things and we are adept to do in many ways. From visual, auditory and kinesthetics, travellers can learn new skills in cooking, language, engaging in arts and crafts, music, wellness, yoga and cultural immersion. It is the desire to learn and see new things, that determines where people travel and what they do. Learning gives you a sense of understanding, accomplishment and empowerment. Use it in the most sustainable way possible.

COUNTRIES LEADING THE WAY WITH #TOURISMPLEDGE Iceland The Icelandic Pledge was introduced in 2018 and already 75,000 people have taken the pledge to be a responsible traveller. To essentially leave no trace behind, stick to designated parking, roads and campsites. And to not risk your life for a instagram photo.
New Zealand The Tiaki Promise means to guard in the Maori language. It calls on travellers to promise to care for land, sea and nature and tread lightly, consideration of others, respect of culture and ultimately travelling with 'an open heart and mind'. A way for travellers to actively 'care for New Zealand' while exploring this geographically blessed country.
Palau The Palau Pledge was the first nation to change its immigration laws and simply ask travellers to take a pledge and 'act in an ecologically responsible way on the island, for the sake of Palau's children and future generations'. Since 2018, almost 240,000 pledges have been taken, signed by each visitor in their passport upon arrival. Find us on Twitter @sustainabletvlr and LinkedIn

WHAT DOES A TOURISM PLEDGE MEAN? Travel is one of the greatest privileges of our lives and a #tourismpledge is a gentle reminder to travellers, to tread lightly and leave no trace behind. Treat your visit to any country, community or environment, no different to the way you would treat and respect your own country and home. Behave as you would a welcome guest to a home, use common sense, manners, kindness and respect for the people who live there, the biodiversity and environment. A #tourismpledge is at the heart of what it means to be a sustainable traveller and sustainable tourism and a simple reminder to travellers to care for the land in which they visit. Travel brings joy, freedom, adventures and life changing moments and memories. We are privileged to travel and experience many of the world's wonders. Enjoy what is there but leave it for others to enjoy too. Check out www.thesustainabletraveller.com

A TRIP ON TWO WHEELS
YANA BROOKE W R IT TE N B Y D A
PHOTO BY MANUEL WILL ON UNSPLASH
I vividly remember the day I bought my first bike. Years later, I learned how heavy and clunky I was so excited! I was around 16 at the time and I had saved a few hundred dollars from working casual shifts after school. I remember feeling pumped as I headed to my local bike store to pick out the bike of my dreams. A silver ‘Maverick' wannabe mountain bike, and it looked cool! I LOVED THAT BIKE AND RODE IT EVERYWHERE!
Zipping down to my local library with my back pack of books, water bottle in place and looking the part with my cap firmly placed under my helmet. I would even take it on the train to Uni and into town, feeling so adventurous.
my Maverick was, but I loved it nonetheless. I rode that bike for a few years and kept it for almost 20 years stored in the garage. I later sold it for $30, feeling content it was going to a good home and another person planing to use it to commute to work. A few years later with more dollars in my pocket, I upgraded to an entry level matt black Scott bike with full determination to become a mountain bike rider. I did one jump off a rock, fell and sadly my Scott bike laid dormant in the garage for years. BUT I’M PLEASED TO SAY THE BIKE IS BACK!
With tyres pumped and brakes checked, I’m once again zipping down the streets with my backpack on and grabbing the train into the city (Sydney, you need bike friendly train carriages please). But now I 'm excited to be bike riding with my children, who enjoy it as much as I do.
We are zipping around the park in tandem and my secret ploy to finally plan our bike family holiday is under way! For many of us, bike riding was something we learned as children and either still do today or perhaps wished we were still doing. The great thing is bike riding has so many benefits for us and the environment. It’s good for our health, it’s fun, minimal cost and it’s pollution free.
Issue 27 | 234
According to Bike Radar, studies have shown that ‘riding a bike also makes people happier’.
Which explains why so many of us have made the switch from cars to bikes. Zipping through traffic is much better than sitting in your car in traffic. It’s estimated that more than 2 billion bikes are used around the world which is expected to more than double by 2050 (World Bank). And some of the world’s most bike friendly cities are Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Bordeux, Vancouver, Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro. While cities such as Taipei, are effectively using bike riding as a means to improve air quality, reduce car usage and traffic with increase bike lanes and bike share schemes.

Do you ride a bike ?
Luckily for us sustainable seeking travellers, you don’t have to be a Peloton enthusiast or Tour de France professional to take a bike tour. There are a few amazing bike tour companies out there who are providing all the gear, professional cycling guides and everything you need, to make your next trip away on two wheels. DuVine Cycling are a leading luxury bike tour operator and designers of private and group cycling trips.
With their motto Bike. Eat. Drink. Sleep they go 'one step further, opening doors to one-ofa-kind local experiences and embracing the spontaneous nature of bike travel'. The company was founded by Andy Levine 25 years ago and offer tours in 20 countries and 50 regions. They are experts in knowing where
to go and how to get there in the most bike friendly, enjoyable and sustainable way. You can choose from a road bike, hybrid or even the popular e-bikes to make that uphill ride seem like a walk in the park. From classic tours in Tuscany and Piedmont Truffle culinary tours, newly launched Greece family ‘Yacht + Bike’ tours and more challenging rides through the Alps and Pyrenees for the ‘avid cyclist’. Or book an exclusive 8 person week long ‘Bike and Barge’ experience onboard the luxury Belmond afloat for champagne on deck and a slow travel voyage through Burgundy. Read more about DuVine Cycling and their best sustainable practices and commitment on all tours 'going 'greener' on our brand profile page 23.
Backroads active travel company is a Virtuoso preferred member since 1991, and has some of the best reviews from raving fans and repeat clients you will find.
One guest stating they had booked 30 trips! 'Our mission is to provide a travel experience so transformative that you’ll never want to travel in any other way’.
Backroads offer an array of bike active adventures (plus walking, hiking, snow and cruise) for just about everybody and every pace. All tours are fully escorted with 3 to 4 expert professional guides per trip, best equipment and gear, best accommodation, food and everything in between. They also have a strong commitment to travelling responsibly, with each tour designed
as an opportunity to experience ‘communities’ and not just destinations. Riders meet the locals, farmers and wine makers in the region, directly supporting communities they visit, which is an important pillar of sustainable tourism. They have a buy local policy, donating to charities, recycling where possible, ‘leave no trace’ best practices and supporting non profits as well. They have exciting new itineraries for 2020 for multi adventure tours, walking and hiking, families with older teens and with younger kids too. Check out the Chile Total Eclipse Tour in December 2020, Israel and Jordan, Costa Rica, Scotland and many more.
Grasshopper Adventures are leading the way with Asia Bike tours for the past 15 years. They have truely immersive itineraries in Bhutan (yes please!), Mongolia, India, Vietnam and Sri Lanka to name just a few.
They use local guides and I love the fact they own and operate their business. You can jump on a tour, bike and boat or even have a self guided tour planned for you. Leading responsible tour operator G Adventures , also offers over a dozen cycling trips for the active adventurer. Tours include bikes, own guides, local experiences, homestay and varying physical levels to determine the terrain and how challenging it will be. Imagine experiencing the island of Cuba on two wheels!
Feeling like you want to travel differently and with a lighter carbon footprint? Then jump on a bike tour and no doubt you will appreciate our amazing environment as you zip on by past wineries, villages, mountains and off the beaten tracks. Let’s make ‘biking the new cruising’ to actively reduce our carbon trail, support local communities and experience the world on two wheels.
The hard decision now is which tour to book and when can we go?
Plan your trip DuVine Cycling Enjoy time with your family on a Greece Family Private Yacht + Bike Tour for 8 days / 7 nights from US$7,995 per person.

5 EASY WAYS TO
GET RID OF PLASTIC
forever.
REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE
It's super easy to pack a bottle that is reusable to refill with water when travelling. You will find most hotels, lodges, airlines, airports, train stations and city centres, now have water fountains. So refilling your own bottle on the go is super easy. And never have a reason to buy water in a plastic bottle again.
USE YOUR OWN BAGS
Fold it, pack it but always carry an extra bag to use for carrying groceries, beach towels, snacks and any responsible souvenirs purchased to bring home.
FOOD CONTAINER
Single use is out and Bring Your Own (B.Y.O) is in. Always BYO container or even food wrap to avoid using any single use plastic containers that are used once and thrown away. Also handy for packing snacks to munch on while travelling.
REUSABLE STRAWS
Pesky plastic straws seem to be lingering so always be prepared to order a drink and remember to say 'no plastic straws please'. Carry your own paper, metal or even glass ones, and they come in all shapes and sizes.
COFFEE
TEA CUPS
If you don't have a reusable cup for your takeaway coffee, then you can't drink one. Full stop. Pack one in your bag and no excuses.
