5 Steps to High Impact Professional Development
Finding the new normal Eva Cartwright - The Teaching Assistant College Although schools have coped incredibly well with the covid storm, it’s certainly made every element of school life more challenging! Here at TA College, we’ve really missed being able to go out and visit our candidates or deliver INSET in person. Zoom has most definitely been the next best thing though – just imagine if all this had happened pre-internet! Now we’re a step closer to finding what normal is going to look like, you might be considering ways of making the most of the professional development opportunities out there for your team.

Live Training, but over Zoom Over lockdown, we’ve been asked by many schools to deliver short INSET sessions online. Although this can never replace getting everyone together and delivering training in person, we have found this to be a great alternative. This has worked particularly well where sessions have been divided into two with enough gap for the team to engage in reflective activities to bring to the next session.
Making the Most of Expertise in School You obviously have a wealth of knowledge already in your school, specialist workshops on key areas relevant to your team. Although these could be delivered in school, why not go one step further and record the training to create a bank of ‘how to’ guides for the team. Watching these videos could form part of a fabulous induction programme for new staff or for existing staff to refer back to.
Focusing on Building Consistency in Practice It’s no secret that our INSET for teachers and TAs working together is our course schools identify as generating the greatest impact. Yes, specific training for TAs is great, boosts their confidence and builds motivation, but there’s nothing like the outcomes generated from building teams who are capable of multiplying the impact of fantastic teaching and learning.

Make the Most of Online Courses & Qualifications Our short courses, COBIS Diplomas and Accredited CACHE Qualifications are great for your TAs who are ready for the next step.
Measuring Impact If you’re looking for high impact, it’s clearly very important to consider the starting point, long-term vision, and how training will support the school in achieving improvement objectives. We can support you in auditing the starting point in current practice, creating powerful reflective tasks, action research, and measuring the impact of professional development activities ensuring you have purposeful feedback for Governors or school board.
