THE TECH | 1 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY FISCAL YEAR 21-22 Published April 2023

Letter from the President & CEO and the Board Chair

In the last few years, the educational system has faced unprecedented challenges. Both educators and students were compelled to adapt to unfamiliar teaching and learning methods. During these times organizations like The Tech become increasingly important. An increased demand for resources from teachers, as well as the desire for activities from students and families, was met by The Tech. We are filled with gratitude and pride because our team rose to the occasion and worked tirelessly to respond to these needs.

In May 2021, The Tech re-opened our doors and welcomed back our community. We loved seeing hundreds of thousands of curious children and the smiling faces of educators and parents by their side.

Our largest new exhibition, Solve for Earth, continues to inspire. It addresses the world’s most pressing problem — climate change. Through interactive displays and cutting-edge technology, students are able to explore innovative solutions and gain a deeper understanding of how to protect the planet’s natural resources. This includes the development of a hands-on lab experience for school groups using the Sustainable Cities presented by Ford exhibit, which allows visitors to become city planners, making decisions about sustainable land use, energy sources, and transportation.

In today’s world, it is more important than ever to provide students with opportunities to learn collaboratively, engage in hands-on activities, and discover their potential through play. With COVID restrictions eased, The Tech was once again able to offer field trips to our local community. Our learning team rebuilt our facilitated experiences to encourage collaboration while maintaining a safe educational environment. The response was overwhelming. Schools eagerly returned, buses arrived, and students flocked to The Tech Interactive. We were proud to serve as a valuable educational resource during this challenging time.

We continue to be humbled by the dedication and resilience of our team and their dedication to our community. We reacted to the needs around us, solidifying our position as a resource for innovation and a leader in STEM education. We will continue to do so as we expand our efforts in the years to come.

We are proud to be a part of this team, and we look forward to continuing our journey together.

The Tech for Global Good

The exhibit and special program introduced new laureates — people who are using tech to improve lives all over the world.

The Tech Challenge

We can’t wait to hear what you build! That’s what we said to teams who participated in the 2022 Tech Challenge, Kinetic Commotion, presented by Amazon. For the 35th annual Tech Challenge, participants in Grades 4 to 12 built devices that made sound using kinetic energy. We saw wind-up xylophones, Rube Goldberg music boxes, and tons of other creative displays of engineering.

AND OUR SUPPORTERS

Volunteers, donors, and the City of San José make our mission possible. The Tech Interactive could not be a resource to young people and educators without this generous group of supporters. Thank you!

Fiscal Year in Review

Total revenue, including in-kind contributions, for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022, was $17.3 million, with contributed revenue accounting for $11.1 million, or 64%, of total revenue. Public support was $3.6 million, or 21% of total revenue. Earned revenue was $2.1 million, or 12% of total revenue; this includes general admission and IMAX ticket sales, memberships, and facility rentals. Investment income was $0.5 million, or 3% of total revenue.

Expenses for the year were $20.2 million. The $2.9 million shortfall was covered by an endowment release of $1.7 million and restricted contributions received in previous fiscal years. The unrestricted beginning and ending cash balances for the fiscal year were $2.6 million and $3.2 million, respectively.

The Tech received a second $1.9 million forgivable loan from the federal government’s Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (“CARES”) Act Paycheck Protection Program (“PPP”) and had its second PPP loan for the same amount, which was received in the 2021 fiscal year, fully forgiven.

2022 Revenue and Expenses

In addition, The Tech received $1.7 million in Shuttered Venue Operator Grants (SVOG) from the Small Business Administration to help cover the historic levels of earned revenue loss and to support reopening. All SVOG funds went to support payroll costs. At the start of the fiscal year The Tech was open weekends only, as of October 2021, 4 days a week, and as of December 2021, 6 days a week. Receiving federal funds over $750,000 required a federal single audit, which we passed, and is part of the audited financials.

Some 75% of The Tech’s expenses were for education programs, 17% for marketing and administration, and 8% for fundraising. The $1.9 million PPP loan helped replace earned revenue that was lost until our visitors were ready to come back in greater numbers and more schools were able to bring back field trips; these funds bridged the revenue gap allowing The Tech to maintain and hire new staff as we resumed full operations.

The Tech’s financial stewardship enabled it to retain the highest possible four-star rating issued by Charity Navigator, one of America’s leading independent charity rating services.

Endowment Update

The beginning and ending balances for The Tech’s endowment were $27.3 million and $23.9 million, respectively. Since 2014, The Tech has contributed all endowment draws to an operating reserve fund, to be used for expenses when financial performance is significantly weaker than expected. The operating reserve fund fiscal year-end balance was $3.2 million and is included in the unrestricted cash balance.
