We are all so excited about the new journey we are on of bringing not just the same ads each issue in a simple throw away publication as our past directory but providing our friends with a real magazine filled with articles meant to educate and inspire in a format that is worthy to be placed on your coffee table. 1 cup unsalted butter, softened, but still cool 1 cup powdered sugar 1/8 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons maraschino cherry “juice” 1/4 teaspoon almond extract 2 and 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup maraschino cherries, chopped Granulated sugar, for sprinkling the cookies 36 milk chocolate kisses, unwrapped Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. In the bowl of your standing mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter at medium speed until creamy - 1 minute Reduce the speed to the lowest setting and slowly add the powdered sugar and salt. Add the cherry juice and the almond extract until combined. With the mixer still on low, slowly add the flour, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Increase the mixer speed to medium and add the cherries. Shape the dough into 1-inch balls, and place the balls on a baking sheet, approximately 2 inches apart. Using your thumb, gently press each cookie in its center until the cookie is about 1/2-inch thick. Sprinkle each cookie with a little granulated sugar. Bake the cookies until the bottoms are lightly browned, about 14 minutes. Once removed from the oven, immediately press a chocolate kiss into each cookie’s center. Transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.
Stained Glass Heart Cookies
2/3 cup butter 1 cup white sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 eggs 3 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup milk 40 fruit flavored hard candies (preferred cherry) Parchment paper
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar. Stir in vanilla and eggs. In another bowl, sift together flour, baking powder and salt; add to egg mixture alternately with milk. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough 1/4 inch thick. Cut using a heart cookie cutter. Place on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet. Place candy in plastic bags and crush with a meat mallet. Place crushed candies inside heart window frame. Bake for six minutes, or until candy is just melted. Cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, until candy is hard. Lift cookies off parchment paper baking sheet with spatula. Optional light Icing - milk, powdered sugar, vanilla, food coloring. Stir and lightly brush onto edges for a finished look. 7

Robotics Competition In April 2011, Central Texas College (CTC) partnered with For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) to host the Centex First Tech Challenge Robotics Competition. The partnership was initiated in order to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in the Central Texas region. FIRST is an organization dedicated to inspiring young people’s interest and participation in science and technology through a variety of programs.
One of these programs is the First Tech Challenge (FTC), which provides affordable, accessible opportunities for high school students (Grades 9-12) to compete head-to-head using robots in an exciting sports model. High school-aged participants work alongside mentors to design, build and program robots. Robots are built using a re-usable, modular robotics platform. The 2011 Centex FTC Competition was one of the largest qualifiers in the state. Twenty-seven new and existing teams competed, over 100 volunteers assisted, and nearly 500 people attended the event. The competition drew teams from as far away as Waco, Marble Falls, and even Houston. Twenty-one teams have registered for this year’s event, which will be held at the James Anderson Campus Center on the CTC campus on Saturday, February 11, 2012, starting at 10:30 a.m. This event is free and open to the public. The schools competing are Copperas Cove HS, Hamilton HS, Shoemaker HS, Shadetree Mechanics, Killeen HS, Marble Falls HS, Salado HS, Harmony Science Academy, Midway HS, and Florence HS. There is also an independent team out of Waco competing. Nearly every school has multiple teams competing.

What is the secret to a healthy smile? Taking good care of your teeth! Proper dental care begins even before a baby’s first tooth appears. Remember that just because you can’t see the teeth doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Running a damp washcloth over your baby’s gums following feedings can prevent buildup of damaging bacteria. Once your child has a few teeth showing, you can brush them with a soft child’s toothbrush or rub them with gauze at the end of the day. Putting a baby to sleep with a bottle in his or her mouth may be convenient in the short term — but it can harm the baby’s teeth. Consider taking your child to a dentist who specializes in treating kids. Pediatric dentists are trained to handle the wide range of issues associated with kids’ dental health. They also know when to refer you to a different type of specialist such as an orthodontist to correct an overbite or an oral surgeon for jaw realignment. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that a child’s first visit to the dentist take place by the first birthday. Such visits can help in the early detection of potential problems, and help kids become accustomed to visiting the dentist so they’ll have less fear about going as they grow older.
Key Learning Points To Share With Your Child: It is important to brush your teeth twice a day using a pea-size amount of fluoride toothpaste and a soft bristle toothbrush. You should brush your tongue and all parts of your teeth using a gentle circle motion. Flossing before the evening brush loosens particles of food from the day a toothbrush can’t reach. If left between the teeth the food will cause decay. Eating a variety of healthy foods each day helps prevent tooth decay and contributes to overall oral health. Sweets are called “sometimes” foods but not beneficial to healthy smiles! Every 6 months visit the Dentist. Most Sibling rivalry is a natural part of life that can actually grow a child into a healthy successful adult with wonderful communication abilities who is able to get along with all types of people. Parents need have no concern even if the arguments get worse as the children get older – as long as they also increase their verbal sophistication and, once all tears are spilt, they learn to resolve their differences without one child submitting to the other. Based on a five-year research project into siblings, the project by the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Family Research examined children’s cognitive and social development between the ages of two and six.”The more the children upset each other, the more they learn about regulating their emotions and how they can affect the emotions of others,” said Dr Claire Hughes from her book, Social Understanding and Social Lives. Hughes added. “The more they point-score, the more it can motivate them to achieve. The more they argue the more they are learning complex lessons about communication and the subtleties of language. Dr Tina Kretschmer, co-author of Siblings – Friends or Foes? Stated ”Parents should not try to stifle their children’s rivalry.”It’s a natural part of sibling relationships and it has its good sides: it can motivate them to choose different niches in which to excel. Sibling rivalry can be constructive, preparing them for important relationships when they are older”,” she said. Role Models: The way that parents resolve problems and disagreements sets a strong example for kids. So if you and your spouse work through conflicts in a way that’s respectful, productive, and not aggressive, you increase the chances that your children will adopt those tactics when they run into problems with one another.

The largest garage sale in Bell County benefitting the Bell County Museum is almost here! Find treasures or begin spring cleaning and make a little something extra. The annual Big Bell County Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2012, from 9-4, at the Bell County Expo Center. A few booth spaces are now available to vendors and area non-profits. Visitors will be able to find everything from collectibles to electronic equipment, fabulous antiques, vintage jewelry and textiles, furniture, house wares, and just great all-American junk. “The Garage Sale is really a giant, wonderful flea market, and has been characterized as one of the great people-watching events of the year,” Museum Director Stephanie Turnham said. “It is also a great opportunity to get out with friends and family members, do something fun, and find some real deals. There’s plenty of parking, food will be available, and children under twelve get in free. “ “Admission is only $3.00 for adults,” Turnham added, “so it’s a great bargain that offers the opportunity to discover hidden treasures offered by the many vendors. Plus, every family member can find something here that they just cannot live without. Also, children under 12 get in free.” “Proceeds from the Garage Sale help the museum fund exhibitions, educational programs, and also help to preserve the collection for the residents and visitors of the Bell County region. The garage sale also needs volunteers, Turnham said. “We need people to help us for a couple of hours on Saturday selling tickets and troubleshooting, or for setting up on Friday. It’s amazing what music can do for a kid. As a powerful stimulant, music can alter your child’s mood instantly and create new bonds and memories. We all have our personal stories of using music to calm a colicky baby or playing a favourite lullaby to put a little one to sleep. Music can also make time fly away on a long car ride. And, let’s not forget the role that music plays at parties! Music is very much deep-rooted in our everyday culture. Without it, our lives wouldn’t be the same. Take a moment and just imagine what your child’s life would be like without ever having heard “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” or “Itsy Bitsy Spider” or the “ABC song.” Or, how would they like to watch Sesame Street without any music? It’s unthinkable. Music is an inherent part of our nature and who we are in so many ways. Our experiences with music start in early childhood and unquestionably last a lifetime. What the Research Says. The International Foundation of Music Research, based at The University of Texas at San Antonio, has produced many publications on the benefits of music on early brain development. There is substantial evidence indicating that babies are aware of and respond to music and different sounds inside their mother’s womb. At birth, a baby’s brain development still remains 16

incomplete. Newborns quickly learn to recognize their mother’s voice from others and they are able to respond to changes in a person’s voice or pitch before they reach their first birthday -- often by moving their arms and legs or babbling and cooing. A child’s brain develops its full potential when exposed to enriching experiences in early childhood. Stimuli received in early childhood are crucial to brain growth and the development of important connections made in nerve cell networks. Music and Intelligence. Can listening to music actually make smarter adults of the future? Recent data from the University of Texas indicated that those students who received an arts education that included music received higher SAT scores. Many studies have shown that music can benefit cognitive abilities, particularly spatial abilities, higher reasoning and motor skills, and higher achievements in language and math. And, there’s been a lot of media coverage in recent years about the Mozart Effect: the effect that passive listening to the music of certain classical composers has on a child’s intelligence.
There are many fun and inexpensive ways for parents to explore music with their children: Sing With Your Child – You may not be the next American Idol, but chances are your child will think of you as their idol even if you can’t carry a tune – young children won’t notice and you’ll probably have a lot of fun together. Make Music with Things Around the House –Get creative and look for every day things that you can transform into a musical instrument. How about making maracas out of plastic bottles: simply fill them with some dry beans and seal for a couple of instant shakers. Texas Angels Pageant
The first ever Texas Angels Pageant for our friends with special needs will be held on February 25th, 2012 at the Lee Lockwood Museum (2801 W Waco Drive) at 2 p.m. in Waco, Texas. This pageant is open to boys and girls with special needs between birth and 21 years old. There is no entry fee for competitors.
The Angels Pageant system believes that EVERY child is a gift from God, regardless of their abilities. We love them and praise God for their life and spirit. These pageants are not about ability. They are simply a chance for us to come together and celebrate these children’s sweet spirits. We welcome any special needs child that would like to participate. The pageant will be unlike any other pageant you have ever seen. Our participants are celebrated for what they can do!
