Origami Pochette Emmanuelle Milani

Intended to be bare to a minimum, it is made from only one piece of material. All you will see is the woven textile, its fibers, its knots, and its folds that show where hands have worked on it. Natural fibers prepared by hand, woven on a wooden loom by light of day, painted or stamped and folded to form one by one: truly, purely handmade, from fiber, to threads, to textile, to bag.

Each “imperfection” and irregularity in the textile reflect a person’s touch and not of a machine’s. Each visible knot shows us where their fingers have connected two strands of fiber. Each stain on the fiber reflects its vegetal origins. This is real luxury.

Each fold is a contemplation on the simple life of the community who makes the textile, the men who prepare the fibers and the women who weave them, all anchored to the forest that provides for all their needs, including the wild abaca plants from whose trunks the fibers are drawn.

The Material is called Hinabol, a traditional textile of the Higaonon tribe.

Traditionally, it is woven and used during special occasions such as weddings, tribal gatherings. It is given as a gift for important guests, a wedding dowry or a peace offering during tribal conflicts.

This collection is a result of an enduring relationship with tribal artisans and community producers, an appreciation for wild and natural materials and a dream for a way of life that’s a little bit more sustainable.
