our m i s s i on Thread is just a tool. It’s nothing special, and it can’t do much on its own. But oh boy what it can accomplish when paired up with the right material and a little creativity. This little project is a humble attempt to explore our city and its peoples. Finding those interesting materials that make up our communities, that creativity which provokes, instigates, and inspires. We want to tie it all together and see what happens. We want to ask around and see what’s up. If something is happening that people should know about, we want to make sure they do If something isn’t happening that should be, we want to help make it happen We want most of all to hear from you! What are you up to? What are you seeing? What are you doing? What are you thinking? What is life like out there, and how can we all share in it? Help give us a chance to tie it all

together, and let’s see what can happen.

I'm sitting at Coffee Ethic, looking for Adam Rosenback the designer behind 'The Modern Craftsman.' All the skinny tweed pants are crossed under the tables and everyone is raptapping on their macbooks. The space is full of potential when we sit down to talk. Adam is... Adam is... a whirl of entrepreneurship and 'get it done' raw ability. He's a classicallytrained Architect who has studied in Italy, makes furniture by hand and runs a craftspace for fellow craftsmen that is also a blossoming artist community. He's talking at a pace. He's drinking latte with a leaf on the foam. I'm having a Willie Wonka moment. This guy sitting before me is responsible for a tidal wave of creations across our Ozark town. I dive in: Tell me your life story... How'd you come to be in Springfield? He explains, "I came for school but stayed for a girl, how about that. Single now if you're wondering." Hmm, but why did you stay here (since you're from Minneapolis and an architect and could go anywhere)? "I had finished school and was designing furniture for my clients and designing it in the Lemon Drop artist space. When that folded I saw the potential there." The Lemon Drop was a n yo DIY venue that provided a work space for by Brie Vo local artists downtown. "$2040 bucks a month doesn’t buy you that much of a work space alone, but in combination with others at The Modern Craftsman it gets you 5000 sq ft and tools—all your basic woodworking, metal working, pneumatic, ceramic tools, and a 3D printer."
"We had 10 members when we started. It's like a gym membership, you pay a due and you get a key. We currently have 47 or 48 members. We have everything, from a couple girls that make clothes, to that guy right over there who brews beer in the basement (points behind him to a guy seated at the bar who waves back). "Eventwise we do on average 46 shows, beer tastings, potlucks or cookouts or movie nights (free for members). Fellowships happens. There’s always a group of people in the studio. It’s quite the little community. We had a show yesterday and we have one tomorrow." He sums up his creation: "The Modern Craftsman is Springfield's premier artist collaborative for people who need a space to grow and incubate their skills and knowledge. We are more professionally oriented not that we exclude hobbyists." He wants to be clear, though, that the people in the space must tend that fever to bring necessary and purposeful things into existence. People that are trained and further challenging themselves in the still, dark hours. I tell him I want to be a part of this space. I'll do pottery. I'll paint oils and hang out with all the feverish souls. He gives me his card and we wind our ways in separate directions.
