“It was a great night with great food, great friends and laughter,” said Empty Nester co-chair Joanne Giel, summing up the Empty Nester February meeting. Joanne and husband Mike are this year’s co-chairs.

While tradition has been for each of the Nesters to bring a dish to the monthly event at the Reunion Meeting House, this get-together took a different approach.

“We had a lot of discussion about having our food catered each month or every other month, so we have decided to go with every month,” said Joanne.

The caterer chosen for the monthly dinners is local chef Christy Steele of Mario’s Pizza and Wings on Gaines Ferry Road in Flowery Branch. The Empty Nester menu included lasagna, chicken marsala, mashed potatoes, salad and veggie tray, with some incredible brownies and tarts for dessert! Even better, the meal came at a terrific price!

The entertainment included some getting-to-know-you-better questions, where random Empty Nester guests drew numbers. Among the “winners” (pictured here) were Jim & Judy Strawn, Carol Brody, Don Smith and Bill Humble—and they and most of the others good-naturedly answered questions like: what do you collect and who do you trust for advice other than your spouse? Joanne thanked them all for their entertainment and also recognized Fran Bridwell and Liz Rush, who volunteered to host the March meeting on March 18th.

9:30 am Preschool Aquatics 1 (Ages 3-5)

No water experience necessary. Child will become familiar with the water without the parent. Skills include introduction to front kicks, blowing bubbles, breath control, underwater exploration, front/back glide, coordinated arm strokes, kicks and arm strokes on back, short breaths of air, introduction to lifejackets and pool rules.

10:00 am Preschool Aquatics 2 (Ages 4-5)

Advanced preschool class skills include front/back kicks, under water exploration, front/back glide, coordinated arm strokes and kicks on front/back, rotary breathing and elementary backstroke

10:30 am Level 1/2 Introduction to Water Skills and Fundamental Aquatic Skills (Ages 6 & up) Learn basics of swimming including entering/exiting the water, holding your breath underwater, supported and unsupported front/back float, flutter kicking, alternating arm strokes front/ back, submerging in chest deep water, coordinated arm stroke, explore deep water.

11:00 am Level 3 Stroke Development (Must pass Level 2 skills)

Skills include jumping in deep water, head-first entries, retrieving an object from the bottom, rotary breathing, front/back glide for distance, treading water for 30 seconds, changing body position in deep water, front/back crawl, elementary backstroke, and butterfly kick.
