The New Horizon Foundation
N“ o country can ever truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contributions of half of its citizens.” – Michelle Obama. My mom always mentioned the substantial prevalence of gender discrimination in India and how a male child is preferred over a female child. I got to experience it firsthand during my trip to India in 2016. I witnessed the struggles experienced by girls in rural India due to a lack of amenities, adequate staffing, and access to education facilities. I also learnt about the school dropout rates and socio-economic vulnerability experienced by these communities. The findings from a study done by Project Drawdown show that “diminished education level among women and girls is the 6th most significant factor contributing to global climate change. If there are adequate measures taken to increase the literacy level among women and girls, then by 2050, 51.48 gigatons of CO2 can be reduced from the environment”.
The New Horizons Foundation is my way of giving back to the community who deserve better. I started the foundation with the support of my parents, my sister Anika and guidance from my mentor from YLSBC Ravi Safaya. Our foundation is a non-profit organization that aspires to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged people, especially children, with a focus on the girl child.

OUR MISSION
Our mission is to help improve the quality of life for most girls in rural India and contribute to the sustenance of sanitation infrastructure in their schools. The New Horizons Foundation aims to support the development of girls’ education in underprivileged sections of society through partnership, support and capacity building in partnership with the grassroots organizations to increase the number of funds and support to make a positive
impact in their lives.
Interestingly, there is indeed a correlation between the education levels among women and girls and the impact it has on global climate change. Our programs aim to generate funds to provide the support needed to create better futures which indirectly contributes to fighting climate change.

OUR OBJECTIVE
• Assist with identifying the cause that prevents girls from going to school. • Identify the cost involved to set up the infrastructure to encourage girls to attend school. • Infrastructure components include • Identify economic barriers and other hurdles that prevent girls from attending school. • Explore methods to influence their families to encourage girls to go to school. • Provide sanitation, education aids and, adequate hygiene facilities, to encourage them to start attending schools • Identify donors and other sponsors and contributors to support the project.
OUR FIRST GLOBAL INITIATIVE – “MAINALLI SCHOOL SANITATION PROJECT”
Mainalli is a village in Karnataka State in Southern India, located about 750 km from the Bengaluru metro. Census India 2011 stats show a population of 19,124 residents with 10,089 males and 9,035 females. Education literacy is 54%. Mainalli has 12 government schools of which 4 are solely for girls.
There are low enrollment and school attendance of girls in these schools as a girl due to a lack of basic hygiene and sanitation facilities such as toilets and washrooms, and the availability of hygiene products. It is difficult to imagine the living and educational conditions of girls in such places. A little help, initiative and funding can contribute to the upliftment of the living condition of these students.
PROJECT OBJECTIVE:
New Horizons Foundation will be working with individuals, organizations, partners, and other contributors and all proceeds will be used in the following ways:
Create and maintain toilet and washroom facilities that are sustainable clean, sanitary and safe. Provide hygiene products in schools Remove or reduce the barriers to attending school and learning – such as providing supplementary teaching assistants and tutors in order to increase the staff to students ratio Contribute to other high priority and key outcome initiatives to help and sustain attendance and school participation Let us all join hands in making the world a better place where we learn to respect and treat people equally by working towards a common goal.
