By Stewart Lytle, Reporter ––––––––––––––––– NEWBURYPORT – Eric Metzdorf describes his latest venture as “a long and winding road,” but starting in March the food entrepreneur who created Metzy’s Taqueria, the area’s first food truck, will make the MBTA train ride a lot more fun. Metzdorf has signed a 10-year lease on the vacant terminal at the rail station with plans to open Metzy’s Cantina to serve hungry and thirsty train passengers, local workers at the Newburyport Business Park and a growing number of residents who will live near the train station or walk and bike the popular Clipper City Rail Trail. After 14 months of searching for a good location, Metzdorf ’s team will begin construction on the new restaurant in two weeks, installing a kitchen, bar and space to service the truck inside the vacant terminal. a food truck to have a home kitchen where food is made. Having his own kitchen, plus a place truck employees can work in the cold months, will make his food operations more efficient, he said. “Everybody thinks (opening a restaurant at the train station) is a bad idea,” Metzdorf said. The vacant red-brick terminal building is on a dead end road. MBTA ridership is down about a third from its high of 1,000 riders a day. And local residents are not accustomed to going out to dinner at the train station. But the Plum Island resident is confident that Metzy’s Cantina will succeed. Metzdorf thinks his timing is good because of the ambitious plans the city has for building out a Smart Growth District that encompasses the train station. Already in progress are plans by Minco Corp. to build 80 apartments on a nearby parking lot. Metzy’s could be a destination restaurant for the dozens of young professionals who are expected to lease those apartments.

Come in for a visit and compare!

When it is built out in several years, the new district will create an estimated 540 new residences that cater to younger and older people, who prefer to live in apartments or condos and have easy access to the train to Boston and elsewhere, city officials have said. Also nearby is the Newburyport Business Park, which has about 1,000 workers in the various businesses. Metzdorf ’s truck is a familiar site in the business park. One of his most popular locations to park the Taco Truck and serve food is at Mark Richey’s Woodworking and Design shop. Through the large north window in the terminal diners at Metzy’s Cantina can see Richey’s windmill. “I love that windmill,” Metzdorf said. The train station is also at the southern end of the popular Newburyport Rail Trail. “I can’t wait to bike here from the river and reward myself with a taco,” said Sarah Campernel, who is the interior design consultant for the Metzy Cantina project. Metzy’s, which will feature Brad DeLibero as the chef, will offer

many of the same items that have proven so popular on the truck. In addition to the menu of steak, pork, chicken, shrimp and fish tacos and burritos, the cantina will serve soups, salads and appetizers. At the request of many of his customers, the cantina will serve its much-loved onion rings, now limited to the steak burrito, as a side for all entrees. The cantina will also have a bar that will serve beer, wine and sangria, according to its new license. The truck, operating under a different company, does not serve alcohol. Because so many customers will be taking a train or headed home from the train, the cantina will feature take out and table service. The space can hold up to 99 people inside the terminal and more under a covered outside area that is on the station platform. There will be 12 free parking spaces in the MBTA lot to serve the restaurant. Metzdorf is also looking forward to catering events at the terminal. “We are having fun,” Metzdorf said.

A Great Year for Sleep

By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD

Happy New Year! As most of us are back from a few extra days off, time marches on and our daily routines are back in full force. One of the things reinforced with me during my short break was how important sleep is. My body has become accustomed to a certain amount of quality sleep. I have always had difficulty sleeping past a certain time in the morning, regardless of what time I go to bed. On the days over this holiday period that I stayed up later than I normally do, my amount of sleep hours was less and my quality of sleep tended to be lower. This had an impact on the way I felt the next day. There are many reasons for poor quality sleep. Everything from a poor mattress, poor pillow, sleep position, medical issues, diet, alcohol consumption, and work schedule can have an impact on the quality of sleep that we get. Although some people like myself can notice subtle changes in sleep quality, many others do not realize that some of the issues they have routinely can be caused from poor sleep quality. Sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout our lives. The way you feel while

you’re awake depends in part on what happens while you’re sleeping. Sleep helps your brain work properly. Studies show that a good night’s sleep improves learning. Studies also show that sleep deficiency may cause you to have trouble making decisions, solving problems, controlling your emotions and behavior, and coping with change. Sleep plays an important role in your physical health. For example, sleep is involved in healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, sexual dysfunction, ADHD, obesity and depression. Sleep issues can affect the young, the old and everyone in between. The many changes that take place in our bodies as we age can increase the risk of sleep disorders. Sleep apnea is one of many sleep disorders. It is a serious, potentially life-threatening sleep disorder that affects approximately 18 million Americans. It comes from the Greek meaning of apnea which means “want of breath. People with sleep apnea have episodes in which they stop breathing for 10 seconds or more during sleep. People with sleep apnea usually do not remember waking up during the night. Some of the potential problems may include morning headaches, excessive

daytime sleepiness, irritability and impaired mental or emotional functioning, excessive snoring, choking/gasping during sleep, insomnia, or awakening with a dry mouth or throat. Some simple questions to ask yourself are: Have you been told that you snore? Do you often feel tired, fatigued, or sleepy during daytime? Do you know if you stop breathing or has anyone witnessed you stop breathing while you are asleep? Do you have high blood pressure or are you on medication to control high blood pressure? Is your body mass index greater than 28? Are you a male with a neck circumference greater than 17 inches or a female greater 16 inches? If you answered yes to more than two of these questions, or if there is anything else in this column that makes you believe you may not be getting the quality of sleep you would like, please discuss these with your physician. The volunteers, though few in number are dedicated and hardworking. They really love to see the customers come in from the cost and leave with treasures. Please remember they only accept donation during business hours. Donations should not include games, children’s toys, electronics, food, books or yard sale cast offs. The hours are Tuesdays 9am to 1pm, Thursdays 3pm to 7pm and Saturdays 9am to 1pm. -----------------------------------------------------------SALISBURY- The Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society wants you to ring in the New Year by making a resolution to neuter your male cat during their “Happy Neuter Year” campaign. Sponsored by PetSmart Charities, the largest funder of animal welfare efforts in North America, the “Happy Neuter Year” campaign will provide $20 neutering surgeries for male cats during the month of January. Spaying and neutering is one of the most effective ways to reduce the homeless pet population and is safe for kittens as young as eight to 10 weeks old, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. “Neutering male pets is a simple surgery that reduces unwanted behaviors, like roaming, fighting, and urine marking territories,” says Liz Pease, Executive Director at the Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society. “It also guarantees your cat never fathers a litter of kittens.” This special $20 rate is even less than the organization’s normal low-cost price and is available to all. Pet parents who wish to take advantage of this offer must mention the “Happy Neuter Year” campaign when they schedule their appointment. This campaign is based on availability. MRFRS’s Catmobile will provide 200 “Happy Neuter Year” sterilizations for $20 in January. Please visit www.catmobile.org or call 978-465-1940 for more information or to schedule an appointment. PetSmart Charities’ “Happy Neuter Year” campaign provides more than $733,180 to spay/neuter clinics to fund affordable, high-quality spay and neuter surgeries for more than 20,650 male dogs and cats across the nation during the month of January.
