Sports Park Reopens Under Original Owner
by stewart Lytle, reporter ––––––––––––––––– AMESBURY – A lot has happened very fast at the old Amesbury Sports Park since original founder Ted Dipple took the park operations out of bankruptcy on Dec. 30. The park with its 940-foot hill for snow tubing, opened last month under a new name, the New England Sports Park. Permits were secured from several city agencies for its operations, including re-opening its popular Corner Kick Pub. It hired a new staff, headed by former operations manager J.P. Searle as it president and former technology manager Louis Franceshi, as the new general manager. The staff produced and groomed snow for the eight runs in time to open its doors last month to the delight of adults and children who had not been able to go tubing this winter. The park, under its new management, has revised the tubing system, which Searle said “would put a smile on everyone's face.” In contrast to the previous owner, who Searle said, “sold the heck out of the hill,” the number of tubers will be limited to a maximum of 400 in each of three time blocks. On Saturdays and Sundays, the hill will be open for runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., from 2 to 5 p.m., and from 5 to 8 p.m. On Fridays, the park will open at 2 p.m. Continued on page 3 President J.P. Triton High School students Sarah Collins and Megan O'Neil have developed a marketing plan to sell the technologically advanced F-150 truck, not just to men, but to women. The United Nations and the Obama administration might learn something important from another Triton student, Chelsea Castaneda, who wrote a 30-page research paper outlining how Mexico, a country plagued with kidnappings, could adopt the American Amber Alert system to help rescue abducted children. Rachel Williamson, Cara Orlandi and Thersea Benoit in another 30page research paper outlined how humanitarian aid could be channeled more effectively to Africa to fight the AIDS and Ebola outbreaks. These were only three of 13 papers Triton students in the DECA extracurricular program wrote for the recent district competition at Endicott College. Another paper planned a new stadium for the Revolution, Boston's professional soccer team. Still another student redesigned the shopping experience for the American Apparel company. “All of the papers were great,” said Frank D'Aloisio, who teaches marketing and entrepreneurship and heads the Distributive Education Clubs of America at Triton. Out of 84 students who participate in the DECA program, 53 earned Photo by Stewart Lytle the privilege to compete and represent the district at the Massachusetts Continued on page 3

state competition in March at a two-day event in Boston. There were six students who won first place honors, nine in second place, eight in third place, two in fourth place and four in fifth place. “We prepared harder for district and state competitions than ever before, D'Aloisio said. For the state competition, “The kids will have their game face on. It is now how far do they want to go. The prize for the students this year is a trip to Orlando, FL, to compete in international DECA competitions. D'Aloisio also praised the nonqualifying students because “DECA is a combined comprehensive learning, character building, and leadership development experience. DECA, a non-profit international organization founded in 1946, prepares emerging leaders in high school and college to pursue business careers. The goal of DECA is to prepare its members to be college and career ready upon graduation, D'Aloisio wrote about the program. The program focuses on four areas: marketing, finance, hospitality and management. The high school program worldwide has about 200,000 students participating in 3,500 schools, including Triton and
Georgetown high schools. There are a total of 65 chapters in Massachusetts. D'Aloisio is most excited about the growth of the DECA program at Triton. Started only four years ago with six students, it is now the largest 21st Century after school program and has attracted students from every grade and from almost every other school activity, including the sports teams. About 10 percent of all Triton High School students are members of the DECA club. “The word has gotten out, he said. “DECA has challenging, but fun activities. There is something for everybody. He believes the appeal of the DECA programs for Triton students is that they get to compete on an intellectual basis. For the competitions, the students go through extensive preparation, much of it on their own time in addition to their school work. They practiced solving problems through role playing. They took three practice exams. They produced power point presentations and made posters on their topics. And they wrote and designed the complex research papers. The skills required to compete in the DECA program “pulls together every teacher's efforts in this school, he said. Winners can receive college
scholarships. Bentley University gives $2,000 a year scholarships. And Johnson & Wales University and Marriott Corp. provide $1,000 scholarships. Qualifying students are: First Place: Cailin Fraser, Sarah Collins, Megan O’Neil, Jessica Nguyen, Samantha Brown, Noelle Indingaro, Emma Lent, Ceili Riccio, Nicole Sullivan, Emily Willey, Chelsea Castaneda, Shauna Murrin, Justin Steeves, Eric Rybicki, Adam Baletsa, Ashley Shute. Second Place: Eden Gurlitzm, Michael Shea, Olivia Lees, Nicole Mailhoit, Sam Wright, Jack Norton, Mark Theberge, Clint Cohen, Leo Heffernan, Luke Reiniger, Sadie O’Keefe, Parker West. Third Place: Abigail Ostrander, Abbey Killam, Allison Rennie, Samantha Dibacco, Allegra Migliozzi, Thersea Benoit, Cara Orlandi, Rachel Williamson, Jacob Aponas, Jack Killion, Shea Capolupo, Alexander Anderson. Fourth Place: David Batterton, Abby Hill. Fifth Place: Sarah Ganzenmuller, Kaitlyn Muldowney, Megan Muldowney, Camille Mihalchik, Charles Spinale, Cam Weston, Grant Poster. It will cut down on the number of people. And it makes it safer, Searle said. Too often in recent years when an overcrowded hill made the wait times long, people left unhappy, he said. At $25 per tube, Searle believes the park should bring in enough revenue to support a staff of six permanent employees plus another 40 part-time staff members. The Corner Kick Pub is reopening with a new chef, who is rewriting the menu that will include the pub's Friday night wings and beer special. In the winter the pub will serve meals cafeteria style to improve the quality of its service. When warmer weather returns, so will table service, and large French doors will allow diners to spend time on the deck watching their children score goals on the soccer fields. “Parents don't want to miss their kid scoring a winning goal, Searle said. The focus in the restaurant, the private function rooms and the fields and hill operations will be high-quality customer service, he said. Added is another function room upstairs for birthday parties and other functions. The park hosted its first function last weekend.
Gone will be the ZORB ride and summer tubing, he said. During the summer the park's focus will be on the fields and the restaurant. Tosh Farrell, one of the world's leading youth coaches, will continue to hold his youth soccer camps on the park's all-weather fields. Groups the Shore’s Over the The like North Hill Gang will play soccer. And there will be rugby matches. In 1993, Dipple and former Boston Bruins defenseman Brad Park founded the sports park on South Hunt Road at the intersection of Interstate 495 and Highway 150. He sold it to Event Partners, LLC in 2011, but remained the financial backer for the park. Then early last year, Event Partners declared bankruptcy with debts not only to Dipple, but to the city for more than $100,000 in back taxes and water/sewer fees to the city. The park owners also ran afoul of the city's conservation commission and was under a cease-and-desist order for violating neighboring wetlands during the large Spartan Race. The runners had crossed into neighboring wetlands and onto a capped private landfill. The new park has no plans to host such large events.
Dipple, who has insured many Boston professional athletes, was the only bidder for the park in the bankruptcy process. He changed the name of the park to give it a new start. “It made sense for him to take back the park, Searle said. “Ted ! didn't want to see the dream go. In 2007, the AHA’s revised guidelines were published in its scientific journal, Circulation, and there was good news: the AHA recommended that most of these patients no longer needed shortBY J. artificial joint replacement. The American Dental Association (ADA) has finally weighed in on the controversy: “In general, for patients with prosthetic joint implants, prophylactic antibiotics are not recommended prior to dental procedures to prevent prosthetic joint infection. The practitioner and patient should consider possible clinical circumstances that may suggest the presence of a significant medical risk in providing dental care without antibiotic prophylaxis, as well as the known risks of frequent or widespread antibiotic use. As part of the evidence-based approach to care, the clinical recommendation should be integrated with the practitioner’s professional judgment and the patient’s needs and preferences.â€? Since I graduated from dental school, the use of antibiotics prior to dental appointments has never made sense to me. To think that a loading dose of antibiotics will do anything to prevent anything is not logical. The most recent evidence and statement from the ADA confirms this. While the ADA’s statement is not an outright cancellation of all prophylactic antibiotics, it is reassuring to know that we (dentists and patients) have more flexibility, and are able to make these decisions without having to always hunt down the orthopedic surgeon. People who have had previous complications with infected joints or have compromised immune systems may still be required to pre-medicate. For those patients who have been swallowing all those pills prior to your dental appointments, I would suggest having a discussion about this with your dentist. Patients with artificial joints have become accustomed to pre-medicating and I can understand if there is hesitation about stopping this routine. Have the conversation with your dentist and decide what makes sense for your specific situation.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You need to be certain that all the right conditions are in place before you take that first step. It can't hurt to listen to good advice from those who have your best interests at heart. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Be careful not to get involved in other people's disputes unless you know the facts behind the disagreements. That's the best way to be assured of making wise and honest decisions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You still need to be careful about how you're going to spend those energy reserves you finally got around to restoring. Best advice: Avoid overdoing it. Let things take their course. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your aspect continues to favor travel -- alone or with that special person. So if you've been putting off making those getaway plans, it's still a good time to get started on them. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Those so-called golden opportunities that continue to dazzle the Lion still need to be carefully checked out. Be suspicious about anything that looks like the "perfect" prospect. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Changes at the workplace could make it more difficult to do things the way you prefer. But the wise Virgo who shows some flexibility could find it paying off in a big way.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might want to check out the explanation you were given for a sudden shift in your duties. There's a possibility that you haven't been told all the facts that you deserve to know. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Having confidence in your abilities is important, especially when you could be facing a new challenge, whether it's in the workplace or in a personal relationship. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A new work-related opportunity might not be all that it seems. Before making any decisions, you might want to check with others who have had some experience in that area. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A situation involving someone close could benefit from your timely intervention. Avoid being judgmental.
